Did you know... Every time you miss an appointment at your GP’s you cost the NHS £126 RESNET NEWS Braunstone Residents are welcome to join the ‘Braunstone Residents’ Network’ Facebook group to keep informed about local news. The fundraising efforts through The Garage Sale are going well, we are looking for donations of clean bedding, kitchen stuff and bric-abrac. The Annual Christmas Toy Sale will be branching out this year. We will have lots of lovely preloved and new toys, gifts and clothes all at bargain prices to help with your Christmas Shopping. We are at The Brite Centre 12pm to 4pm on Saturday 1st December. The following week join us 4pm-7pm on Friday 7th December at our very own Gallards Grotto for an early evening of fun, craft stalls and food. In the New Year, the team are looking at expanding The Garage Sale and getting a community shop running regularly. If you would like to get involved in volunteering locally and have a few hours to spare, either pop into the Neighbourhood Support Base or give us a call on: 0116 2232256. Wishing everyone in Braunstone a Happy Christmas and New Year!

Did you know… Snowflakes have 6 sides and each one has its own unique pattern

NMB Update The latest Neighbourhood Management Board (NMB) meeting discussed the following items: The Residents’ Network – The summer trips were very successful with lots of local people asking to do them again. Over the summer the sales of school uniforms brought lots of new customers to The Garage Sale. The team are going to do another school uniform sale in the October half term and just after Christmas to support parents needs for growing children. Community Events – The B-inspired ‘Family Fun Day’ funded through ‘Power to change’ had around 450 people attend to do a range of fun activities. Keith Magee updated the group about the St Peter’s Flower Festival on the 14th to 16th of September going to be held at the Church. Power to Change – B-inspired have recently put in a tender to acquire The Grove through the Leicester City Councils Transforming Neighbourhoods Team. B-inspired were successful with their bid and are going to be leasing the building for the next 25 years through an asset transfer. They have already asked the community about The Grove and are looking forward to building on this exciting new project. Neighbourhood Action Plan (NAP) – Service providers in Braunstone have been getting out and about asking local residents to complete NAP questionnaires. The report will hopefully be completed by October. Foodshare – The Braunstone Foodshare committee have disbanded and The Foodshare Scheme will be run by B-inspired going forward. The committee will create a new steering group for the scheme. From the beginning of April (our current financial year) Foodshare has given out 660 food bags supporting 40 households on average per week (not including emergency food bags or home deliveries). Clockwise – A gentle reminder was given that Christmas is soon approaching and Clockwise can support residents with managing their finances over a typically expensive period. Any Other Business Elaine Halford informed the group about The Spark Arts and the Curves Partnership. They are actively looking to engage with 8-13 year olds through their programmes. From September 8th they will having a range of performances and activities from: Weird Words, Messy Mondays, Digital Workshops, Friday night sleep overs, ER Carnival, Halloween and so on…

Police News As the festive period is in sight I thought I would take the opportunity to raise awareness of a couple of things that have historically been an issue across the ward. The ‘Darker Nights’ campaign is back up and running, this is to bring awareness around the potential possibility of an increase in burglaries. So we urge everyone to ‘Lock up’ and ‘Light up’. With Halloween and Bonfire Night approaching we want everyone to enjoy this time safely, so please “Give a Little Respect” to those who don’t wish to be involved. The anti- social behaviour and misuse of fireworks will not be tolerated. Those found doing so will be dealt with appropriately, so have fun, be safe and think of others. Sadly the Braunstone Blues project has come to an end but on a positive note we welcome back PSCO Geoff HARROD and PC Anna WILLIAMS to the Braunstone and Rowley Fields beat team. They will bring the skills and knowledge that they have learnt from the project which will hopefully form part of the Braunstone Blues legacy. If you want to make contact with the police please call 999 in an emergency or 101 for non-urgent requests and to speak to officers. You can also call Crime stoppers on 0800 555111. Friends of Highway Spinney (FOHS) News Since writing for the last edition of the Braunstone Alert, we have had our ‘Britain in Bloom - It’s your Neighbourhood’ Assessment. Judge, Jeff Bates assessed the spinney through a walk in the area and photographs taken throughout the year; he was suitably impressed with the work we have done in the community. We are awaiting results still, fingers crossed we will achieve a level 5 again.

Braunstone History Group What a busy year we have had in 2018. We have held 9 Exhibitions attended by enthusiastic visitors. In the summer we were visited by a group of local children who interviewed our group and produced a play which was shown at the Curve which was a great success. Our Chairperson Helen Catterwell has given several talks and tours of Winstanley House, telling the story of the Winstanley Family who built and formally owned Braunstone Hall. In 2019 we have an action packed calendar. Our future events leaflets will be available from the Brite Centre Library (where we meet) in January. Keep an eye out in the next Alert for more details...

BRAUNSTONE RAFA

As we move into October, the ranch focus is the RBL’s annual ‘Poppy Appeal’. Locally, the culmination of thousands of hours work by very many people, will be displayed from 1st November at the Braunstone Civic Centre. The ‘Poppy Cascade’ will provide an evocative backdrop for the new War Memorial Stones. A Service of Dedication on 7th November, will be a one-off moment of history within Braunstone Town. Well done to all involved, facilitated by ‘Community Life’ with support from the Town Council. On the 10th November our Standard will attend Welford Road Cemetery for the annual Act of Remembrance. November 11th will see Branch members join the parade and Act of Remembrance at the Civic Centre. In the planning stage is a possible trip to Stamford for their Christmas Fair. More info next month. Next meeting - 7.30pm Nov 6th, Braunstone Civic Centre Roy Sherwin, Branch Sec.

Braunstone Foodshare Updates After a busy Harvest festival, where we were fortunate to receive some great donations from schools, churches and many other individuals and organisations. We are now looking forward to Christmas. Every year we aim to give our FoodShare members a little something extra to bring some seasonal cheer. Donations of festive items would be gratefully received at our base at; 45 Wellinger Way, Braunstone, LE3 1RG. We have recently been visited by members of the Feeding Britain Coalition, who advise the government about the issues being faced throughout the country by people accessing either foodbanks or free food outlets. We are happy to have an input into this. If you would like to find out more about how this works please search for them at: https://www.feedingbritain.org/how-we-work We mentioned in the last Alert, Braunstone Foodshare is now incorporated in to B-Inspired so that member’s data can be protected. This has now happened and a new steering group has met for the first time. At the meeting it was suggested that Foodshare would benefit from fund raising activities to cover its expenses, which currently amounts to around £2500 per year. We are now organising a curry night fundraiser for the end of February. Look out in the New Year Alert for more details! Any help with organising welcome, please call: 0116 223 2256 for information.

Rice Krispies Chocolate Puddings Fun to make with kids or as a cute festive period treat for the whole family...

Ingredients - Makes 10 to 12 cakes • • • • • • •

50g rice pops (we used Rice Krispies) 50g butter 100g milk chocolate, broken into pieces 2 tbsp crunchy peanut butter 30g mini marshmallow 80g white chocolate ready-made icing holly leaves

Method:

1. Add the butter, milk chocolate, peanut butter and marshmallows into a bowl. Please over a saucepan of simmering water on a medium to low heat and stir until the chocolate and butter have melted but the marshmallows are just beginning to melt. 2. Pour the rice pops in the bowl and stir until well coated. Line an egg cup with cling film. Press about a tablespoon of the mixture into the egg cup. Press firmly and then remove, peel off the cling film and place the pudding into a cake case, flat-side down. Repeat with the remaining mixture then chill until firm. 3. Melt the white chocolate in the microwave or in bowl over a saucepan of barely simmering water. Spoon a little chocolate over the top of each pudding. Top with icing holly leaves.

Have yourself a Crafty Little Christmas....

You have helped us to learn more about some of the things that have impacted the community and the way that you come together to overcome challenges.
