Did you know... Nowhere in the UK is more than 70 miles (113km) from the sea!

RESNET NEWS As the summer is here, we have several events lined up for local residents. We’re having an open garden at Wellinger Way on Wednesday 31st July and another £1 sale. Come along and see the plans we have for the building and grab yourself a refreshing drink. Our trip to Stratford Upon Avon takes place on 8th July and our second trip to Wicksteed Park in Northamptonshire takes place on 7th August. There are still places available for the Wicksteed trip, which we are subsidising £750 towards, bringing the cost down to only £6 per person! If you would like to pay a bit at a time, we are fine with that, but all money needs to be paid by 30th July. We have given a cash donation to the new gardening club which is going to be growing fruit and vegetables for FoodShare. The donation of £250 will pay for some raised beds to be put in within the back garden of Popeye’s Pizza, a big thank you to Popeye’s for lending the land for this purpose. Our plans to turn the Neighbourhood Support Base into a community shop will hopefully be happening towards the end of 2019. If you would like to be part of the team who decides on what sort of things will be available, and / or you have some customer service or admin experience, please get in touch! Call: 0116 223 2256

NMB Update The latest Neighbourhood Management Board (NMB) meeting discussed the following items: The Residents’ Network Committee – visited 5 sites at the ‘Welcome Change Project’ in Birmingham to research how their project worked successfully. This was to help the committee think about how to develop a community shop on the estate. There was also a lot of interest shown around developing a community shop at the Power to Change Information event on the 16th May, but more volunteers are needed to be able to pursue this project further. Online sales are going well and The Garage’s £1 Sale raised £180 in two hours! Power to Change - An update was given around the purpose of creating community businesses in Braunstone. There was an information event on 16th May at the Brite Centre which provided information and advice to local people, who were interested in setting up a community business. There was a great turnout and lots of people signed up on the day. The application for the next 3 years of funding has been submitted; and we should hear back in due course. The signing of the lease for The Grove has been delayed until a few more queries have been resolved. Foodshare – There are a number of opportunities for Foodshare members to gain further skills through training and volunteering. Through the Leicester food plan, Braunstone will host a pilot “cook n eat” project for six weeks at St Peters church in collaboration with the diocese. Clockwise - Clockwise has noticed a shift in reasons for loan applications, with more people borrowing to cover outstanding bills. A new savings scheme has been started encouraging people to save for white goods. A Clockwise representative was at the Riverside festival, and will continue to have drop-in days at b-inspired to promote their services. Leicester City Council Housing – Paul O’Neil is the newest staff member to join the Housing Office. They are going to be conducting a review of the footpath at the side of the Oak Centre, which might need replacing. Neighbourhood Support Team – Braunstone growing project will continue to grow vegetables at the school and carry on developing the project in Popeye’s garden for another 3 years. The Braunstone Befriending scheme has received some new funding, which will enable further development of the scheme with a new coordinator post and hopefully the development of a men’s mental health group on the estate.

Police News We have been working with our partner agencies around anti-social behaviour on Gaddesby Avenue. This has resulted in a resident at the location losing their tenancy and being evicted because of their behaviour at the address. This action does take a considerable amount of time to complete. This does not mean that this is the end of the issues but we will continue to work with the community and our partners to resolve it. We’re going to be doing a high visibility patrols around Braunstone Park during the months of May to September to try and deter people from thinking it is suitable or legal to carry out antisocial behaviour on the park. A number of addresses have been visited by the beat team and Leicestershire Anti-social Behaviour team to issues warnings around the behaviour to residents or visitors to their addresses. Our summer drink drive campaign has started! Please remember when your enjoying a Sunny afternoon BBQ with friends and family that it takes up to 8 hours for the alcohol to get through your system. Think about what journeys you have to make that day and the day after, to avoid being caught over the limit! Have a great summer, The Braunstone & Rowley Fields Team

Friends of Highway Spinney News The Friends recently had an invite to the ‘Celebration of Urban Buzz’ by Bug Life at the City Hall, Charles Street. This was to celebrate the end of a period of creating habitats across the UK to support bees and other pollinators. Project managers from Birmingham, Ipswich, Cornwall, Cardiff, Bristol and Leicester all gave presentations about their areas. Other cities that have taken part are Leeds, York and Plymouth. Julie and myself attended with our Display Boards and had a lot of interest from other Wildlife groups and employees of Leicester City Council. It is always a great opportunity for networking, for making new contacts and re-establishing those we have made in previous years. In April, Highway Spinney completed their part by sowing wild flower seeds in one of the planters at the Wyatt Close entrance. These seeds were provided by Kew Gardens. Two local children enjoyed themselves helping to scatter the seeds. Our AGM on Tuesday 7th May at Braunstone West Social Centre, St Mary’s Avenue was very well attended. We loved speaker Alan Cann talking about Nature Spot and Wildlife. Look at: www.naturespot.co.uk for information about this site. Janice Lock, Events Secretary, FOHS

16th July - 11am to 3pm 20th August - 11am to 2pm

End of an Era Father Maloney of Blessed Sacrament Church came to Braunstone 29 years ago, with a vision to create an oasis in the community. His spiritual journey started when he was a child back in Ireland. Raised in a Catholic family with 4 siblings, he found his calling after he finished his “A” Levels when pondering how to spend his life. He came to realisation that if he spent his life trying to get as many people as possible to know God, it would be a life well spent. He then spent six years in college studying Philosophy and Theology. Father Maloney has collectively spent 55 years working parishes in London, Grantham, Nottingham, Grimsby and Braunstone. Whilst, also traveling up and down the country working with the Catholic Missionary Society for a number of years. Throughout the time Father Maloney has spent in Braunstone, he has taken 28 coach loads of people from Leicester to Ireland to enjoy the scenery and be at one with nature. He has also organised multiple Christmas dinners for older people, and ran a number of trips to Skegness for local families. He has given thousands of sermons over the years and supported so many local people, in a variety of ways. One of his greatest achievements was setting up the ‘Friday drop-ins’ back in 1998. He wanted to provide a safe space for people to socialise and have access to affordable new clothing and household wares. The ‘Drop-in’ was expected to run for a few years, raising money for local and international causes and charities. 21 years later and it is stronger than ever, being led by 20 volunteers and having raised over £200,000. Over the years, it is clear that Father Maloney has made his mark in Braunstone. He will be missed by the 400 people who attend the church on a weekly basis. On behalf of the whole community we want to say ‘Thank you’ for all you have done over the years and we wish you well for the future as you help out at the Priest’s House in Lutterworth.

In the Spotlight Father John Joe Maloney has been on the estate for 29 years and is retiring in September from his role as Priest of Blessed Sacrament Church. Here’s what he had to say in the Spot Light... What Animal would you be and why? A race horse, so I could run in the Derby. Describe Braunstone in a few words? Friendly, good neighbourhood with a beautiful park What is the furthest you have travelled? Singapore, to wed a local couple. What would be your ‘come dine with me’ menu? Elizabethan pork with vegetables, and Jelly and ice cream for dessert. What chore do you hate doing? Washing clothes What’s your favourite flower? Primroses How do you relax? I play golf or go fishing If you had 3 wishes what would they be? 1. For all people to be equal 2. Peace on earth 3. A just wage

Is there anything else you want to say? Help and visit each other to reduce loneliness in the community

Braunstone Growing Project The recent sunny weather and heavy rain has meant the crops at Braunstone community school are coming on, leaps and bounds! We are already harvesting strawberries and the broad beans will soon be ready to pick as they seem to put on inches every day. Meanwhile at Popeye’s, we’ve been busy designing the layout and building raised beds – here’s Colin helping make some raised beds. By the end of June we’ll hopefully have the whole garden set out, ready to be planting some autumn and winter crops. Braunstone Befriending Scheme B-inspired has recently been awarded funding to expand The Braunstone Befriending Scheme. We have secured funding for 2 years from the National Lottery Community Fund and funding for 3 year’s from the Masonic Charitable Foundation. The main aim of this project is to reduce isolation, facilitate social independence and encourage self-reliance.

What we’re planning on doing: The funding will be used to raise the profile of befriending in the community. We will focus on recruiting new be-frienders so we can support more older people in Braunstone. We will be increasing the range of activities for over 55’s in the community and enhancing our TalkTime programme. Our focus is to reduce isolation in this age group so we will be actively encouraging new members to join the groups, providing greater community engagement and increase opportunities for volunteers. Later in the year we will be starting a pilot ‘Over 50’s men’s group’, which will focus on more physical activities and provide a safe community space for men. We will also have capacity to develop our networks in this area and explore social prescribing. The money will cover a number of new positions that will be a part of the Neighbourhood Support Team. Along with being invested in current projects and activities to aid the development of this project.

Power to Change & Community Business Community Business Information Fair On May 16th, B-inspired held an event at the Brite Centre promoting Community Business in Braunstone. The event was well attended by local residents and service providers offering community business support and volunteering opportunities in Leicestershire. The event was successful in capturing a diverse range of people with vision and skills to support the development of new community businesses in Braunstone. We are still looking people to get involved with new community ventures. If you want to get involved in helping to start a community shop, a community kitchen / café and a social bar, please get in contact with us on: 0116 223 2256 or email: info@b-inspired.org.uk.

Training Opportunities The Neighbourhood Support team at Wellinger Way are now offering short training opportunities for local people. If you want to develop your skills, get back in to learning or try something new we have a number of short courses availble including: first aid, health and safety and food safety. We are also developing a number of workshops around confidence building and community business. We’re developing this in line with a number of new community ventures which will be coming to Braunstone next year. If you are intesested in getting involved or want to learn more please get in contact with us on: 0116 223 2256.

Welcome Change Project On the Monday 13th May, The Braunstone Residents’ Network went on a visit to ‘The Welcome Change Project’ in Birmingham. The visit was to see how their project worked and to gain inspiration on how to turn The Garage Sale in to a Community Shop. The project had a number of similarities with ours and it was great to discover more about how it worked. They run a number of charity shops, a community hub with café and growing project. From the trip volunteers were inspired by how to develop their ideas further. From growing and selling herbs to renting out mobility aids. We’re always looking for volunteers with vision, so if you’re interested in helping shape a community shop and can offer you time to help get it started, please get in contact with us on: 0116 223 2256.

Braunstone Foodshare Updates The numbers of families using our foodshare project is increasing every week. Reluctantly we have had to reduce the area we operate in. From the start of July, we will only be able to support Braunstone residents with a LE3 1 postcode. We also will not be able to provide emergency foodparcels outside of this postcode area. We are also preparing for Harvest; if you are a community group, school or church and would like to collect food to support our project, we would be very grateful. All ambient food is welcome; tins of meat, fruit, vegtables, long life milk, gravy granules, cooking oils, dried pasta, rice and noodles.

Foodshare Week 2

Please drop-in from 11am to 4pm on your appointment day only. Coming outside of these times, could mean that we are not able to offer you this service.

Cook & Eat Update June saw the beginning of a 6 week pilot programme hosted by B-inspired, ran in conjunction with Churches Together Leicester. The scheme involves teaching and sharing cooking skills for Braunstone Foodshare members. The pilot was held at the newly refurbished kitchen in St Peters Church. Meals so far have included a ‘Chinese Fakeaway’ with chicken chow mein and egg fried rice, then a Turkish themed meal with pea & mint couscous, and marinated meat skewers. Once we have the results of the pilot we hope to roll the project out to more foodshare members. We will keep the community informed about the successes of this project via our facebook page at @BInspiredleicester.

B-inspired Neighbourhood Support Team

0116 223 2256

Community Letters Hi everyone,

Hi Everyone,

I’m Courtney; I have recently become part of the b-inspired Neighbourhood Support Base team. I am the new Receptionist. I‘ll probably be the first face you greet when entering our building. I’m really looking forward to meeting the Braunstone community and over time growing to be part of it.

My name is Terry, you may remember me from b-working on Gallards Hill where I worked for many years as a customer support officer until 2017. For the past 2½ years I have been based at the Business Box working on a lottery funded project.

I’ve just finished my 2 years at college studying health and social care which allowed me to understand caring for ourselves and loved ones, in times of need is imperative. Eventually, I fell in love with the understanding that helping the community can result in so many benefits for individuals and an area. Within my role and the work I will be doing, I am hoping to make a real difference to the community.

We’re looking for people to help distribute the Braunstone Alert in Braunstone. Can you help by delivering The Alert to your street? If you are interested in helping out please contact, Catherine on: 0116 223 2256

I would just like to let you know that I have now become part of the b-inspired Neighbourhood Support Team based at Wellinger Way, supporting residents of the Braunstone community again. I really missed the Braunstone community and an excited to see where my new role takes me. I look forward to meeting you all, so why not come along and say hello.

We would like to thank Mick Adams, for his continual donations to support our scheme. Mick brings wonderful fresh eggs and bread for us on a regular basis. Thanks Mick, Braunstone Foodshare
