Wellinger Way ‘Clean up’

T

The NMB

he latest meeting of the Neighbourhood Management Board (NMB) discussed the following items: Matters Arising Braunstone Hall The roof will be the first thing to be repaired, followed by the installation of the boundary fences. The path is hopefully going to be developed to improve the standard of the park. Residents Network News A clean up on Wellinger Way will be supported by the group and their main fund raising event which is the Xmas toy sale, will be taking place at the Oak Centre on Saturday 5th December between 10 am - 2 pm. Transforming Communities Cort Crescent Centre is likely to exchange hands at the end of October 2015. Skate Park Changes For the last couple of years efforts have been made to install lightening to allow safe use of the skate park, the lights will be switched off around 9.30 pm. People living adjacent to the park were consulted before the lights were commissioned. They will be in use from early November. Parks service review The park has now got green flag status and further development is to be seen. There will be a warden service available within working hours during the winter months. Police Update Theft of motorbikes figures highly in the crime statistics at the moment, however there have been a few arrests. Braunstone Blues A launch event will be held at the Oak Centre on 26th November between 12 pm - 3 pm. The event will be a 1940’s themed afternoon for 55’s and over to start their campaign. Calls to 999 are the highest in the City from Braunstone and the Blues aim to educate local people about the 999 service and what is deemed as an emergency. This includes, domestic disputes which figure highly, despite not being an emergency. The Blues are available for home visits, to discuss prevention and precautions around fire and safety. For your home visit call 07800 709802 (leave a message). Community Wellness Breakfast Club The half term week in October will see the breakfast club based at the Grove on North Braunstone. It is hoping that this scheme will continue in the future. Growing Hub b-connected are working with volunteers to grow vegetables, these will provide Foodshare with a source of vegetables throughout the year. There are workshops and planting/ harvesting days taking place on a regular basis.

T

he Residents Network have had a busy old year, fundraising and bringing events to the area. We have organised fantastic day trips, to the Black Country Museum and twice to Twinlakes. We had a stand at the Braunstone Carnival to raise funds, as well as donating £1000 towards helping the day to happen and the Carnival Hopper Bus. Also we supported ‘clean-ups’ and the breakfast club during the summer, by gifting time and equipment. This year, we donated funds to the CVQ to run two events; Children’s Christmas Party and a Volunteering Tea Party. Before the end of the year we will be holding our annual Christmas toy sale. We organised a brilliant night for the Awards and are planning the next one. So start getting your nomination forms in (See inside the Alert!). If you would like to become part of our group then feel free to come along to our monthly meet and greets on the first Wednesday of each month at the Neighbourhood Support Base, 45 Wellinger Way, or join the group on Facebook… we are Braunstone Residents Network. Finally, we would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. The Braunstone Residents’ Network Team

RI4James Children’s Sponsored Braunstone Park Walk was a huge success, where an amazing £1675 was raised for the TRI4 James campaign. This was a fantastic event where kids were getting involved to raise a tremendous amount of money, while looking amazing in their fancy dress. A big shout out to top fundraisers joint winners: Lawson Henderson and Grace Andrews (see photos on Alert Gallery Page), who managed to raise a whooping £260 each! With Eva Richmond, pictured with James above, as runner up, who still managed to raise an amazing £194! Darren, Maz and James would like to say a big thank you to everyone who got involved in this fund-raising walk. Braunstone History Group

raunstone History Group Heritage Open Day at Braunstone Hall Stable Block on Thursday 10th September was a great success. It was a lovely sunny day with a continental feel as we had tables and chairs outside for people to relax with their cup of coffee and for old friends and new to sit and have a chat. We had over 60 people attend and for the first time we were able to open the stable doors to show where the horses were kept. This added to the atmosphere of the museum. Helen's talks are always popular and full of enthusiasm and with little known facts about the Winstanley family and the old Braunstone Village. Geraldine Syrett Braunstone History Group

Farewell Leo

e are all sad to hear of the death of Leo Heffernan in August. Everyone at b-connected offer their sincere condolences to Leo's family at this sad

time. “Leo was an inspiration to so many, with a wealth of knowledge, experience, kindness and community spirit. He kindly gave his time to supporting Braunstone Foodshare in growing fresh produce. Leo always went that extra mile he will be sorely missed and will always be remembered with affection”. Tracey Spears, b-connected. “It was a great pleasure to work with Leo, he gave his time, enthusiasm and knowledge in growing vegetables for the community. Leo took great pride in what he grew, tending to the crops with care no matter what the weather was like. Leo will be missed greatly by us all” Jim Cunningham, LCC Braunstone Park Services Gardener.

Lights for Skate Park

ome of you may have noticed that work has started on the skate park to install the long awaited lighting. The two floodlight columns are in and Highways will soon be installing the cable duct. Also a time clock has been ordered to enable us to set a time for the lights to be turned off at night. Taking on board the feedback from the community consultation, the lights will automatically switch off at 9.30 pm. The target is to have it finished by the end of the month which will be just in time for the darker evenings. It has been a lengthy process but we’ve got there in the end! Louise Lavelle Community Safety Development Officer

W

e have recently experienced a number of thefts of motorbikes and the illegal use of motorbikes. This has led to the recent arrests of a number of people as well as the recovery of a number of stolen or illegally ridden motorcycles. I would urge anyone with any details of who may be riding the motorbikes to contact us or pass on the details anonymously to Crimestoppers. As the nights are drawing in, we would like to remind everyone that this can lead to an increase in burglary and theft offences. We Sergeant Lee Eckersley advise everybody to ensure that their property including Christmas presents are not left on show and that all buildings are left locked and secured. Consider using a light timer to give the appearance that your property is occupied. Our team are working to solve the issues in Braunstone and would appreciate the help of the community in resolving the issues by reporting crimes, antisocial behaviour and suspicious activity by calling 101, or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. As always we are keen to help where we can with any community events so please contact us if you need a hand. You can follow us on twitter @LPRowleyfields where you can keep up to date with what we are doing. Sergeant Lee Eckersley & the Braunstone Dedicated Neighbourhood Team.

Talk Time on the move

T

alk Time is a local weekly group for over 55’s that meets every Monday morning from 10-12 at their new venue, Sandyhurst on Hockley Farm Road. Talk Time is a social group that aims to reduce isolation and improve the lives of the older generation in the local community. Each Monday the group gets together for a weekly natter, a game of bingo or two, a quiz, followed by themed activities. We spoke to Pat and Pauline who have become firm friends through Talk Time, to get a feel of what the group means to them. “It's a laugh and it makes you feel better” said Pauline, to which Pat agreed. When asked if it was a group you’d recommend to others, Pat said “Yes definitely , it's a friendly group”. Due to the huge success and demand a new Talk Time session will be coming shortly at the Oak Centre. If Talk Time is a group you feel would benefit you, please contact the b-connected team on 0116 223 2256 to arrange to visit the group.

News From The Vegetable Patch

W

ell Braunstone, the harvesting season is well and truly upon us and it has been all systems go! Over the last few months you have donned your waterproofs and wellies to support the community vegetable growing for Braunstone foodshare. We recently celebrated our first harvest up at our farm plot as we harvested our first crop of potatoes, a whopping 88kg “spudtastic!”. Special thanks go out to all that were involved, b-growing team, local residents, volunteers, PC Tim Oliver and PCSO Ben Stephensons from the Braunstone Dedicated Neighbourhood Police Team, the Braunstone Blues and to Ford & Slater. A good day was had by all, even if the weather did try and dampen our spirits. Back at the b-connected office on Wellinger Way, the b-blooming team and volunteers have been working tirelessly to prepare our garden for RHS Britain in bloom. I am pleased to announce that the Wellinger way garden was awarded a RHS level 4 and thriving. Well done everyone! It is not only local vegetables that we have been harvesting, volunteers have also been busy brambling and picking local fruits. Which through our jam making sessions we have turned into a variety of jams for foodshare. We also took our homemade jams along to the ‘Apple’ event in Braunstone Town where we raised £130.00 towards our growing efforts. It is now time to focus on our winter crops, so if you feel you would like to come and lend a hand, please contact b-connected on 0116 223 2256 or email tracey.spears@b-inspired.org.uk

t the end of September we said goodbye to Helena Whittaker who has been our curate for over three years. Although teaching full-time and managing a family, she became one of us and her ministry was very much appreciated. She really will be missed. The following Sunday the congregation was stunned to be told Jack Lippitt had died suddenly. Jack had been verger at St Peter's for over forty years and served the church faithfully in this special role. During October we welcomed Rev David Day, a retired priest, from New Zealand. David grew up on Saffron Lane and emigrated many years ago to New Zealand. He is a keen rugby fan and came over for the World Cup but whilst here thought he would help us out! Thank you, David. The process of finding a new vicar is well under way and hopefully by the next edition of the Alert we will have some good news! Janet Scott

COUNCILLOR’S SURGERIES

Cllr Stephen Corrall 07966629285

Dear Alert, Recent school reunion for pupils. After much searching using several websites, 11 of us met one beautiful Saturday at the Fullhurst College. We had all started there 50 yrs ago at the then Newarke Girls school. Despite the many changes with the conversion to a modern Comprehensive College, we were soon Cllr Cllr remembering how it used to be during our tour Elaine Halford Kulwinder Singh Johal of the facilities. It was good to see the front of 07736194824 07736194813 the building had not changed and we could not resist posing for a photo outside the front entrance, very much a 'no go' area in our day (See Alert Gallery for photo). There was much catching up to do and some of us followed this up with a few hours at the nearby Premier Inn (was the Post House Hotel, where, some of us had worked there as chambermaids all those years ago). Verity Tazzeyman made a great host and we appreciate the time she spent making it such a resounding success. Regards Sue

Dear Alert, The Junior day, we held on the 13th September went really well. Everyone enjoyed themselves and we had 3 winners; 1st and 2nd prize trophy and 3rd prize tackle and bait. I would like to say a huge thanks to the Braunstone Blues (police, fire, ambulance) for sponsoring the event and for their support on the day. I would also like to thank Daz Gunn, Ian Davies and Steve Halford for all their help with the juniors and photography (See Alert Gallery for photo). It was a real joy to see young people enjoying the sport of angling. Elaine Halford

Hi Alert, Just a quick note to say thank you to the b-connected team for the alert article on my recent job success. I’ve had a lot of positive feedback from people who have read it! I will have to be careful - the local fame will go to my head! Haha. I would also like to extend my gratitude to the b-working team especially Rebecca Lydon and Paula Smith. And, finally to Jane Riley and her team at the Blue cabin, particularly to Hayley Williams who has been a massive help to me in securing my job. I am now looking at doing a post graduate course, its all happening!! Once again, thank you! Jayne Shimmin

Dear friends, Last month I was lucky enough to book onto b-connecteds jam making workshop for foodshare. I really enjoyed the experience and it gave me a real confidence boost, I even got to meet some new friends too. We worked in pairs and used all naturally sourced fruit that had grown in Braunstone to make our jams, I myself made a caramelised apple jam that was “scrumptious”. It was a really rewarding activity and I felt very proud to be apart of a project that helps others. Pam Fry
