Population

Economy

According to the 2010 Census, the population of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon is 6081 people — 5467 in Saint-Pierre and 614 in Miquelon-Langlade. The people originally came from the Basque country, from Brittany and Normandy in France, and from Acadia. The origins of the population of Miquelon are slightly different from those of Saint-Pierre, since many Acadian families came and settled in Miquelon in 1763.

The economy of the islands is based on a variety of sectors, such as fishing and processing industry, public procurement, agriculture, livestock, services and tourism. (See p. 75 for related useful numbers).

Language French is the official language. However, because of the close proximity to Canada, many residents also speak some English.

Religion The majority of the population is Roman Catholic; however, some other denominations are present on the islands. 104

NOT TO BE MISSED! These islands cover an area of 200 km2 and are linked by a sandy isthmus that is 12 km long. They offer a great diversity of landscapes (with a common feature of bogs) and a rich and peaceful natural environment. As well, there are two places here where the sun often shines even when there is fog elsewhere in the archipelago: the area from l’Anse du Gouvernement to the northeast of the island, and l’Étang de Mirande with its swimming area on the pond and access to the sea closeby.

There are two main islands and various islets. The island of Saint-Pierre covers an area of 26 km2 and is endowed with a natural port. The island is mainly volcanic, with a vegetation of sub-arctic type. The port is part of the capital, also called SaintPierre. ▶ Île aux Marins (1700 m by 700 m) is situated near the harbour and is well worth a visit. ▶ Le Grand Colombier is also close by and is a favourite stop for ocean tours. The archipelago of Saint-Pierre-etMiquelon is located some 25 km south ▶ On Miquelon, on the Cape, we find of Newfoundland, Canada, 622 km from metamorphic rocks and cliffs. ▶ The isthmus. Over the centuries more than 600 shipwrecks occurred in the gap between these two islands. It is said they may have contributed to the formation of the isthmus. History & Crests Long before the arrival of European explorers and fishermen, the Amerindians and the paleoesquimauds people visited and resided on the islands for periods of time. Various European explorers visited our region: English in 1497; Portugese in 1500 and 1501 (and Joao Alvares Fagundes in 1521). In 1534, 1535 and 1536, explorers and fishermen arrived: the French, the Basques and the Portuguese.

Below that is the “Grande Hermine”, the ship on which Jacques Cartier landed in Saint-Pierre on June 15th, 1536. The motto “A mare labor” means “From the sea comes work”. The Coat of Arms of Miquelon On top, are the colours of the flag of our Acadian ancestors. The "Kakawit" (or Hareld of Miquelon) is a popular game bird that was served as a main meal as fish was served to inhabitants. From its beak are attached three flags: Basque, Breton and Norman. The green backdrop symbolizes the hope and determination of the islanders.

In the 17th and early 18th century, France and England fought over the islands. In June 22nd, 1816, the islands came back permanently under the French flag, and are now a Territorial Collectivity. The Coat of Arms of Saint-Pierre-etMiquelon

Throughout the year, a variety of events take place that reflect the rich heritage and cultural life of the archipelago. For some events, attendance is limited so don’t hesitate to call Tourist Information for more information.

As you wander around, look for activities that reflect the Basque heritage of some of the islanders, such as the popular game of petanque. And don’t miss out on browsing the local library and bookstore in Saint-Pierre. The considerable collection, amassed over the past 30 years, keeps growing thanks to a constant stream of new acquisitions. What to do?

This Cathedral was built with concrete, has a four-bell chime, and opened officially in 1907. The front of the Cathedral features a mix of pink granite from Saint-Pierre and sandstone from Alsace. The interior is typical of Basque churches, with upper galleries and wrought iron balustrades. The remarkable modern stained glass around the baptistery is the work of French artists Barillet, Haas and Schultz.

Le Zazpiak-Bat — Fronton basque This wall is used in various Basque games. The name comes from Basque words meaning 'the seven' (zazpiak) and 'one' (bat), translated as "the seven [are] one" and refers to the seven traditional provinces of the Basque Country.

The media library has a large local collection (books, periodicals, maps, old photos and other media). There is also Wi Fi service, frequent exhibitions, and a children's area upstairs. (See p. 56 for contact information.)

A key example of activities from this era are “les graves”, large areas of pebbles and stones formerly used to dry salted cod. The pebble covered ground absorbed the heat and let the air circulate allowing the fish to dry faster. Drying the cod after salting permitted long-term preservation for exportation. These ‘graves’ cover 20% of the island and are the only remaining ones in the archipelago.

Le Musée Archipélitude

In fact, the museum’s collection of more than 3000 objects and documents is housed in 28 different rooms spread over 5 buildings:

The main building was originally a school which closed in 1963. SaintPierre Animation transformed it into a museum in 1988. In its 21 rooms a wide variety of artifacts recall aspects of life on the island and elsewhere in Saint-Pierreet-Miquelon: education, the fishery, philately, shipwrecks, nature, crafts, and artists’ perspective of Ile aux Marins.

Notre-Dame-des-Marins Church

This house has been restored to its original state and is now used as an exhibit space for the Musée Archipélitude. At ground level, you'll find the shed dedicated to the first motors used in dories. Upstairs in the house section is a fully-equipped kitchen that dates from the 1950’s. The Jézéquel House

What to do?

The frame of this house was brought over from France by the owner, the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, around 1850. Now an official heritage building, the house has been restored (now has a grey exterior).

This imposing wooden church was inaugurated in 1874 and was classified in 2011 as an official heritage building. Its hill-top location, dominating the panorama of the island, is a symbol of the past importance of the Catholic faith. Several elements are reminiscent of the sea: the colour blue, two seashell fonts, and anchors. The modern altar desired by Vatican II did not displace the old one. The 14 Stations of the Cross were painted by a local artist, Joseph Lemoine (1830–1886). The Wash House The ‘lavoir’ (the wash house) is a heritage building where women used to do the laundry. The monument commemorates the Odyssey of the Acadian people from 1755 to the beginning of the 19th century. It was unveiled on October 23rd, 2007.

What to do?

War Memorial

With the population of Miquelon, on June 28th 1923, a moving ceremony was organized, both to unveil the war monument and to bury Georges Girardin and Eugène Autin. These two sailors had died during the Great War and their bodies were rapatriated to Miquelon on that very day by the naval ship Regulus.

Each year families honour their deceased with flowers, a Catholic tradition that endures in the village. The village of Miquelon undertook this reconstruction in 2005 to show how people went about the cod fishery years ago.

Observatoire de la Pointe aux Barges (au Grand Barachois) The town of Miquelon-Langlade welcomes you to the Observatoire de la Pointe aux Barges (see p. 132 and 56). This interpretation center is located in the heart of the Isthmus, an area of 1,000 hectares classified as a Hunting and Wildlife Reserve.

Barges (500 m). By car on Route de Langlade, go to the exit for the road Goulet de Langlade. Note that the condition of this unpaved road may vary. Starting from Miquelon point is found at the kilometer marker Langlade 5, and from at Miquelon 21. Take this road which takes you east and then north. At the end of the road, leave your car and then walk the 500 meters between you and the Observatory, by the shore or along the track. On the ground floor, visit the permanent exhibition (2014), which presents several aspects of the Isthmus and the lagoon: history, geomorphology, biodiversity and traditional uses. Upstairs enjoy a panoramic view of the whole site. This is an ideal place for observing seals and migratory birds (shorebirds and wintering ducks).

This traditional festival is dedicated to the lost sailors and fishermen, with a mass at the cathedral followed by a blessing of the fleet accompanied by boats decorated of multicolored flags.

This race is a congenial event attended by runners and walkers alike. Some do it to beat their performance, others only want to finish within the four-hour period. It is also an opportunity for friends and families to get together for the weekend, take part in the event, and then enjoy the barbecue and special evening that follows the race.

Juillet Le 14 juillet, notre fête nationale commémore la prise de la Bastille de 1789. A cette occasion, la Place du Général de Gaulle s’anime. La population se déplace en nombre. Jeux et restaurations sont au programme. La journée s’achève avec un traditionnel feu d’artifice et un bal populaire.

Bastille Day July 14 is the National Holiday in France and commemorates the taking of the Bastille in 1789. Most events are centred around Place du Général de Gaulle and are attended by a lot of people. There are food concessions and games. The day ends with fireworks and an open-air dance.

Voilà les ingrédients d’une aventure qui se veut d’abord amicale et qui se nourrit d’imprévus. Cette course est bisannuelle et le sens alternera à chaque édition. En 2015, la flotte quittera Havre Aubert le 3 août pour une arrivée sur Saint-Pierre à temps pour le festival “Rock & Rhum”.

Le Rallye des Cousins : 240 nautical miles separate Saint Pierre et Miquelon from Havre Aubert ( Magdalen Islands ).Many things unite these two islands, the love of the sea and a passion for sailing. These are the bases for an adventure that is first of all friendly and unanticipated. This race is bi-anual , and will alternate at each edition. In 2015, the fleet will leave Havre Aubert on August 3rd for an arrival in Saint Pierre et Miquelon, right on time for the “ Rock & Rhum “ Festival.

The Seafood Festival is held in Miquelon where a lot of seafood dishes are sampled and enjoyed by hundreds of people coming for this great event. Please note, tickets are available in Miquelon only and are limited, please check ahead of time before arrival.

Evènements & festivités — par mois Events & Festivities — By Month Cette manifestation sportive et culturelle se déroule la troisième semaine du mois d’août. Elle débute avec les traditionnels jeux de balle (paletta, pelote de gomme pleine, jokogarbi, main nue) qui se déroulent par équipe chaque soir de la semaine. C’est l’occasion pour les seniors de se mesurer aux pelotaris invités de métropole et du Canada, et pour les jeunes de montrer leur savoir-faire. Cette fête est un moment de partage intergénérationnel autour des défis de la force basque. Le temps fort de la manifestation est le dimanche, où la population et les visiteurs festoient autour de la musique et de la gastronomie du Pays Basque. La journée se termine par un bal populaire sur la place du Zazpiak-Bat.

2015 : du 15 au 23 août/ August 15th to august 23rd

The Basque Festival is held every third week of August. It starts with the traditional Basque games (paletta, jokogarbi, main nue) with teams competing every evening of the week. This is an intergenerational event that centers also around the Basque strength games. It gives the older teams an opportunity to measure their skills against teams from France and Canada, while the younger ones try to show their savoir-faire. Sunday afternoon is the biggest moment of the Festival as the population and visitors mix and celebrate around Basque music and cuisine. The celebrations then end with an open-air dance.

Décembre Les rues du centre-ville s’animent et s’illuminent aux couleurs des fêtes de fin d’année. Les boutiques ouvrent en nocturne pour vous permettre de trouver tranquillement et dans une ambiance où la bonne humeur est au rendez-vous, le cadeau qui vous manque, le produit français qui fera plaisir. Au programme : chants de Noël, chocolat chaud et visite du Père Noël.

Organized by various public and private partners, this special occasion offers many cultural and sporting events as well as leisure activities after dark. A night full of surprises and unusual events not to be missed.

Held on the third Thursday of November, this is an opportunity to taste this new wine and sample some French cheeses and deli meats.
