Poissy Galore, observatory and insect museum in Carrières-sous-Poissy

The series of buildings and pavilions designed by AWP and HHF are part of a new 113 hectare large public park along the Seine river, in Carrière-Sous- Poissy, located in the Greater Paris area and close to Le Corbusier’s renowned Villa Savoye. Part of the Seine Aval Operation of National Interest the project is linked with a 47 ha eco-district involving the design of a new dense urban setting. The park - designed by agence TER - is an ecological showcase for local residents and a leisure destination for people living in and around Paris. The site of the project is exceptional. Along one edge is the Seine river. The presence of barges, fishing huts and houseboats, which have inhabited it until now, has been a powerful source of inspiration. Along the other edge is nondescript, suburban detached housing. The design springs from a process of hybridization between these two existing habitat models: the floating barge and the archetypical suburban house. Among other public infrastructures such as a visitor’s Poissy Galore

center, a restaurant («guinguette»), and an observatory, the competition brief included the construction of a museum to exhibit a large collection of insects, both living and conserved. The museum brief includes public areas, exhibition spaces, an event hall and the welcoming area as well as a series of non publicly accessible areas like offices, storage and designated spaces for raising different types of insects. With the exception of the observatory, which is a steel construction, the collection of pavilions and small «follies» is based on a modular wood system, repeating and combining different sized and angled timber frames framing the landscape beyond the buildings. This approach allowed for interesting and unusual constructions, enabling a wide range of possible variations with a very limited number of elements. At the same time the relatively low priced construction method enabled the integration of local building know-how and local companies.

AWP AWP office for territorial reconfiguration is an award-winning practice that works across scales and genres. Based in Paris and London and co-founded by Marc Armengaud, Matthias Armengaud and Alessandra Cianchetta the practice works at a wide range of scales and at the intersection of different disciplines : architecture, urbanism strategic planning, landscape design and art. The practice was awarded the French Ministry of Culture’s Prize for Best Young Architects in 2006, and the French Ministry of Transport, Housing and Ecology’s PJU urban planning award 2010. Current projects include the design of a 70 000 sqm public space below la Grande Arche - currently under construction, a 85,000 square-metre housing and mixed-use sector in Lausanne, the 60 ha masterplan for an art and creative district in Liverpool, the regeneration of Malmo Quay in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and an exhibition design for Leonardo da Vinci, in partnership with the Italian Embassy in Paris, the Louvre and Prada, in Paris. AWP’s work has been presented at venues worldwide such as MAXXI in Rome, Cité de l’Architecture in Paris, MoMA, the Storefront for Architecture & Art and Architecture in New York, the Design Museum in London and has featured in NY Times, Wallpaper and The Guardian. In addition to practice the three partners teach at The Berlage Center in Delft, at Columbia University GSAPP at ENSA Malaquais, HEIA Fribourg-Transform Laboratory and formerly taught at Cornell University, at Carleton University, University of Virginia and the Lebanese American University in Beirut among others.

HHF HHF Architects was founded in 2003 by Tilo Herlach, Simon Hartmann and Simon Frommenwiler. Since then, HHF Architects have realized numerous projects in Switzerland, Germany, China, France, Mexico and the USA. The scope of work ranges from urbanism and large-scale construction to public pavilions and interior design. From the beginning HHF was looking for collaborations with other architects and artists in order to widen its view on projects and enrich the quality of specific proposals. In this context, worldwide perceived group projects such as “Ruta del Peregrino” and the fruitful collaboration with the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei emerged. In addition to building, teaching is an important activity of the office. The principals of HHF were visiting professors at the University of Innsbruck and guest lecturers at the UIA in Mexico City and at MIT in Boston. They participated also as jury members at numerous universities. From 2009 – 2011 Simon Hartmann was professor at the HTA in Fribourg, Switzerland. Since 2011 he is professor at the Joint Master of Architecture in Fribourg. 2014 he is teaching as a deputy professor at the University of Karlsruhe. Simon Frommenwiler was a visiting professor from 2011 – 2013 at ENSA Strasbourg, where he is an associate professor since 2013. 2014 he is teaching as a lecturer at MIT in Boston. HHF has been honored with numerous national and international awards. HHF won very re- cently the gold award 2015 in Housing category at the Swiss Architecture Awards. HHF where invited to the 13th and 14th Venice Architecture Biennale and honored with the Wallpaper Design Award. In 2013 HHF where winning the important German “Häuser des Jahres” Award, a Berlin Architecture Award, and where honored for the best new building by the Basel Heritage Protection. 2015 HHF where honored with the Swiss Architecture Award.
