three-time member of the USA South All-Academic Team, and was also named to the USA South All-Sportsmanship Team as a sophomore. She helped lead her team to a regular season conference championship title as a junior. As a woman who describes herself as a go-getter, when it came to locking down internships in her field of study, Julia went after what she wanted. She landed internships working with WRAL as a note keeper and a sports photographer before interning at a sports radio station this past summer.
“I am the type of person who if I see something that I want, I am definitely going to go after it,” said Julia. “My drive is what makes me strong. I am going to go out and find what’s out there and what I can do in order to better myself and make myself more marketable.”
station, she saw a sports broadcasting internship advertised online with Spectrum News. Even though she had just been rejected by them and knowing she was underqualified, she decided to go after it anyway. “When I got the interview, I came up with ways that I could do things differently from the last time,” said Julia. “I was able to reflect on what worked for me and what didn’t work for me. So, when I went back in, I was able to feel more confident and I was able to sell them on my drive to succeed.” This past fall, Julia received the Jim Connors Memorial Internship, working as a sports broadcaster for Spectrum News. She is only the second person to hold this position, in which she worked on the sidelines at football games as a sports broadcaster. As Julia prepares to finish her last season as a college softball player and looks to the future, she dreams of one day working for ESPN. But until then, she hopes to find a job in sports, even if not necessarily on-air, but somewhere where she can get her foot in the door. “Sports are my passion. I’m reading every day, watching every day, and I’m very active on social media,” said Julia. “I am constantly gaining all the knowledge of sports that I can, expanding the

Athletic Facilities MEREDITH SOFTBALL COMPLEX The home of Meredith softball includes an irrigated Bermuda outfield with updated irrigation system in the infield to enhance playing conditions. To comply with new NCAA rules, the outfield fence was raised to a height of six feet. A generous parent donation provided for a new warning track, and the field tarp was moved outside the playing area with an access gate. A new backstop wall offers improved viewing for spectators while providing added protection. Recent addition of protective fencing safeguards players and coaches while in the dugout.
LOWERY FITNESS CENTER Meredith’s athletic teams benefit from a new, 6,800 square feet, stateof-the-art fitness center that allows for a high quality strength and conditioning program. The Lowery Fitness Center holds 39 pieces of equipment, including 11 treadmills, eight bikes, eight elliptical cross trainers, four ascent trainers, two rowers, and six power lifting racks. Student-athletes also have access to free weights, kettlebells, resistance machines, physio balls, bands, and accessory equipment.
Meredith College Athletics Program THE DIVISION III EXPERIENCE Meredith athletics teams participate in Division III of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Division III athletics offers student-athletes the opportunity to become well-rounded individuals who successfully integrate athletics and academics while experiencing all aspects of college life. Student-athletes who compete at this level can receive academic and need-based financial assistance. The athletic department is staffed and funded like any other department of the College.
ACADEMICS Meredith College’s commitment to academics is exemplified by its athletics teams. Each year, the USA South Athletic Conference recognizes its student-athletes’ hard work in the classroom by naming an Academic AllConference team. In 2017, 76 Meredith students were named to the team. The Meredith athletics program further recognizes student-athletes who earn a 3.5 cumulative GPA as members of the Athletics Director’s Club and those who earn a perfect 4.0 GPA with the Vice-President’s Scholar-Athlete Award.
MEDICAL SERVICES The athletic training staff provides excellent care for student-athletes. The athletic training support staff consists of Head Athletic Trainer Rebecca Edwards and Assistant Athletic Trainer Katie Fulk. Dr. Doug Martini of Cary Orthopedic serves as the program’s team physician. In addition, Meredith College serves as a clinical site for the Western Carolina University Undergraduate Athletic Training Program. Services and equipment provided include a whirlpool, hydrocollator, ultrasound, injury ice, and electrical stimulation.
COMMUNITY SERVICE Members from each team are elected to the Student Athlete Advisory Committee that organizes support for each sport and also coordinates community service. Past volunteer work includes Special Olympics of Wake County, Habitat for Humanity, Service Raleigh, and the USA South Athletic Conference’s Cans Across the Conference and Pennies for a Purpose.
