ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT

KIMBERLY SCHUH, ’21 Basketball

JR • F • 5’11” APEX, N.C./APEX For Kimberly Schuh, ’21, being a student-athlete at Meredith has been a powerful aspect of her college experience. In fact, it is her favorite way to describe herself to other people.

According to Kimberly, attending a women’s college has been inspiring as she is surrounded by women who exhibit all different kinds of strengths.

An honors student and exercise and sports science major on the health and physical education track, Kimberly is also pursuing K-12 Licensure to teach physical education. Being a student-athlete has allowed her to find a healthy balance between athletics and academics – and her athletic experiences have taught her important lessons that carry over into her academics.

“I get to see other women succeeding in their fields of study, which pushes me to succeed in mine,” she said. “Everybody’s journey is different and I love that I am able to focus on my individual journey while supporting and watching others accomplish theirs.”

“Being an athlete at Meredith requires determination, time management, self-drive, passion, and coachability. I have been able to take these skills and transfer them into the classroom and my learning experiences,” she said. “Knowing I have what it takes to succeed in both sports and the classroom is what makes me strong.” A standout on the basketball team, Kimberly was named to the 2017-18 and 2018-19 College Division All-State Women’s Basketball Teams. She has also been recognized by the USA South Athletic Conference; she was named the Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Year as a freshman and was selected for the All-Conference and All-East first teams as a sophomore after leading the USA South in points, points per game, field goals, free throws per game, and minutes per game. Kimberly’s co-curricular opportunities on campus have also been invaluable. She was chosen to serve as co-chair for Scholars’ Weekend, which she described as both busy and exciting. “Having to organize and schedule over 100 prospective students’ interview times and room locations was a task that further developed my organization and time management skills.”

Her role as a student worker in the Meredith College Campus Store has provided additional growth opportunities. She’s enjoyed meeting members of the community. She’s also gained specific skills by starting and running the store’s Instagram and Facebook pages to promote new merchandise. Off campus, Kimberly was one of two representatives from North Carolina selected to attend the 2019 Future Professionals Leadership Development Conference for future physical educators held in Johnson City, Tenn., where she expanded on her already-strong leadership skills.

“Knowing I have what it takes to succeed in both sports and the classroom is what makes me strong.” As she looks toward her senior year, the welcoming community she’s found at Meredith has lasting value for Kimberly. “Wherever I go, if I’m wearing my basketball t-shirt or a Meredith hat, people will walk up to me and ask if I go to Meredith. The community has created such a warm expectation in which alums or families feel as if they can approach anybody with a warm smile and start a conversation about Meredith. I love this about our college.”
