In a move that will benefit many Indian technology professionals already in the US, a pilot programme to resume domestic visa renewal for qualified H-1B visa applicants has cleared a review by a top regulatory body under the White House.

The book contains 12 heart-tugging stories that speak of not just extremely dire conditions, but also of the resilience of children rescued from these circumstances and

Advocating For Yourself Or Loved Ones When Bladder Cancer Is Suspected If you or someone you know may have bladder cancer, being well informed could get you the best diagnosis and treatment. In fact, according to an article published in “Urologic Oncology,” in 46.5% of the cases where a bladder was removed because of advanced cancer, a very serious type of tumor called carcinoma in situ (CIS) had been missed in past transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) procedures. This alarming statistic magnifies the need for urologists to have enhanced tumor visibility during TURBTs. There is one procedure that can offer visibility of hard-to-see tumors including CIS; it’s called Blue Light Cystoscopy (BLC). Here’s what to know: TURBT can be a critical diagnostic step when done properly and precisely. The TURBT provides essential information regarding the number of tumors, tumor sizes, locations and depth of invasion. All these factors significantly inform the identification of a patient’s risk category, which can subsequently impact treatment decisions. Currently, White Light Cystoscopy is most commonly used for a patient’s first TURBT and is considered the standard level of care. However, research suggests that using White Light Cystoscopy alone may be inadequate, causing:

• Incomplete tumor resection: After one year, there is a rate of up to 61% of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer recurrence, suggesting incomplete tumor resection when using only White Light Cystoscopy. • New tumor growth: Up to 70% of patients have tumors recur after standard TURBT. • Tumors found during subsequent TURBT procedures: Up to 86% of residual tumors are found at the original resection site after initial white-light TURBT. So, how can patients ensure better diagnostics and treatment? Experts say that asking for BLC during the first TURBT is a great way to advocate for yourself or a loved one. BLC is a technology that allows urologists to see tumors that white light alone may miss. Unfortunately, it is not always utilized at the first encounter with the patient. Suzanne B. Merrill, MD, FACS, Colorado Urology said, “By using Blue Light Cystoscopy for first TURBT, urologists can more completely assess the bladder, achieve greater tumor eradication and provide more data for appropriate diagnosis. A Woman Working At NASA Has Become The First Indian Citizen To Operate A Mars Rover Akshata Krishnamurthy is an Indian woman who created history as she became the first person from the country to operate the Mars rover with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in the United States. She shared her achievement on Instagram, saying, “No dream is ever too big or crazy. Believe in yourself, keep those blinkers on and keep working! I promise you’ll get there if you work hard.” Akshata is a PhD holder from the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). She is among the few Indians who joined NASA for a full-time opportunity. According to her LinkedIn profile, Akshata is a principal investigator and mission science phase lead at NASA. She has been working at NASA for over five years now. Akshata shared her inspiring journey on Instagram and how she became the first Indian citizen to operate a rover on Mars and collect samples to bring back to Earth. Akshata’s journey began 13 years ago when she came to the United States with a dream to work at NASA and lead science and robotic operations on Earth and Mars. However, she was discouraged from having unrealistic goals as she was a foreign national on a visa. People told her

However, Akshata blocked those comments and persevered until she reached the goal. “From getting my PhD at MIT to knocking 100s of doors to get hired full-time at NASA, nothing came easy. For the Lemon Pepper Syrup, mix sugar, water and black pepper in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil on high heat, stirring occasionally until sugar is dissolved.

Remove from heat; let steep for 15 minutes. Strain through a very fine mesh sieve. Stir in lemon extract; cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. 2. For the Lemon Pepper Sugar, mix sugar, black pepper and lemon zest until no lumps remain. Store in an airtight container until ready to serve. 3. Place 1 tablespoon of the Syrup in shallow bowl. Dip rims of 6 (10-ounce) glasses into Syrup, then dip in Lemon Pepper Sugar to coat. Fill glasses halfway with ice; set aside. 4. To prepare Lemonade, whisk water, remaining Syrup, lemon juice and tamarind concentrate in a large pitcher until well blended. Pour into prepared glasses. Pilot Programme For Domestic Renewal Of H-1B Visa Clears White House Review (Continued From Page 01) Under the pilot cleared by the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA) review on December 15, the qualif ied H-1B visa applicants will not have to travel abroad to renew the work visa. The OIRA is a statutory part of the office of management and budget within the executive office of the US President. In November, Julie Stufft, deputy assistant secretary of sate for visa services, said, “In India, the demand (for US visas) is still very high. The wait time of six, eight and 12 months is not what we need and (it is) not indicative of how we view India.” “We want to make sure that Indian travellers can get appointments as quickly as possible. One way we are doing that is through the domestic visa renewal programme, which is focused very m uch on India. We are piloting that,” she said. Over three months, beginning in December, the state departments will be issuing 20,000 visas to foreign nationals who are already inside the country.

The vast majority of those will be Indian nationals living in the US and we will expand as it goes on.” “Because Indians are the largest skilled group of workers in the United States, we hope that India will benefit quite a bit from this programme and it will prevent people from having to travel back to India or anywhere for a visa appointment to get their visa renewal. Christmas Price Index Through The Years The good old days – when a gallon of gas was only $1.13 and a performance by 10 leaping lords could be purchased for just more than $2,900. The year was 1984 and those Lords-a-Leaping, along with the other 11 gifts from the popular holiday carol, “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” were making their debut in the inaugural PNC Christmas Price Index (CPI). Dating back to the late 1700s, the carol’s early verses deviate very little from the version of the song known today. Though one factor has changed dramatically: the price tag for True Love’s annual holiday shopping binge. For 40 years, PNC Bank has been calculating what it would cost to buy all the gifts in the song as part of the CPI. The first CPI was created by a PNC predecessor bank as a whimsical holiday feature for a weekly business newsletter. Then, as now, the index was intended as a lighthearted comparison to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Consumer

Price Index. Over the years, the index has risen and fallen with the economy and consumer sentiment. When it launched, the total cost to buy all 12 gifts was $20,023.57. Each of these gifts has grown by at least $2,400 from their debut in 1984. • 8 – The number of times the Four Calling Birds have changed prices in the history of the index. Ever a model of consistency, the birds pricing remained the same for 17 years before their first modest increase. They last experienced an increase in 2013. • 233% – The percentage price increase of the Three French Hens in

2010 — the largest one-year percentage increase for a single gift in the index’s history. They jumped from $45 in 2009 to $150 the following year. • 2003 – The year the CPI experienced its biggest jump in total price. The index grew by 18.4% that year due to significant price increases for the calling birds, swans, pipers and drummers. • 2020 - The year of the single biggest percentage drop in the index (58.5%), and the lowest overall price of the index (only $16,168.14). The 2020 CPI did not include any of the entertainmentrelated gifts, due to pandemic restrictions on in-person performances. Ask Clarifying Questions and Provide Corrections Sometimes, people are misinformed and repeat things they have heard instead of doing their own research. Other times, they believe that anti-transgenderism is justified because of misleading and harmful information promoted by the anti-trans movement. Either way, you can prevent or delay an

How The Taj Was Saved From Environmental Pollution Agra, Dec 18 (IANS): Tourists who visit the 17th century monument of love, the Taj Mahal in Agra, rarely fail to ask if the world heritage monument has finally become safe from the dangers of air and water pollution.

After recent tragic events at the Taj Mahal, involving tourists, the state government has stationed ambulances and basic facilities, along with the quick response teams.

The answer to all these questions and fears is both yes and no. When the SC pronounced its judgment in a series of directives while disposing of the PIL of eco lawyer MC Mehta, between 1993 and 1997, there was an international alarm over the conservational flaws and threats from environmental degradation in Agra. The apex court on the recommendations of the high-powered committee headed by scientist S Vardarajan shut down all polluting industries in the Taj Trapezium Zone, spread over 10,400 sq km, ordered the laying of a natural gas pipeline, asked the Mathura Oil Refinery to set up hydrocarbon cracker unit and use low sulphur crude, directed the UP government to ensure uninterrupted power supply to discourage the use of diesel generators. It also asked the UP Forest department to intensify greening efforts to insulate the Taj Mahal from air pollution. The SC also ordered the construction of a barrage or weir downstream of the Taj Mahal on the Yamuna River. Over the past two decades, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has undertaken a series of measures to protect the Taj Mahal and other monuments in Agra from pollution. Frequent mud therapy using Fullers Earth has removed dirt stains from the surface. The Taj looks cleaner and healthier, most tourists say. The Agra Municipal Corporation, presently headed by a young official Ankit Khandelwal, continuously ensures that the areas outside the Taj remain clean and attractive. The security agencies both inside and outside have modern types of equipment to deal with any situation. The UP Police have introduced innovative crowd management techniques, leading to a hassle-free experience for the visitors. Undoubtedly, some of the measures have yielded encouraging results. “The Taj looks as sparkling and cleaner than it did when I visited it with my family in 1994,” said an elderly visitor from Maharashtra.

On the negative side, are problems that need to be addressed by the Central government. One relates to the dry and polluted Yamuna river which is quite a put-off. First-time foreign visitors feel mesmerised and express their awe at the sight of the monument bathed in the soft wintry sunlight. “Yes, it looks dazzling and emits youthful romantic vibes,” said a female visitor from Italy. She had heard a lot about pollution and the toll it had taken on the mausoleum. But she agreed that it did not look fatigued or worn out. “Surely, a masterpiece, a divine architectural model,” her companion added. Agra’s Taj Mahal continues to draw hordes of tourists from all over the world. As the winter vacations have started the number of daily visitors has gone up to 50,000. “It’s kind of love at first sight. The Taj simply hypnotises you when you first see a glimpse from the main forecourt. As you move closer to the main structure, the size and scale, the grandeur, and the magnificence of the mausoleum overpowers you. It’s beautiful beyond words,” said a tourist from Karnataka, leading a group. Like the sentiment of love, the romance with the Taj Mahal will never fade or age. “You talk to any visitor, the reactions are generally positive and kind of catharctic, a memorable experience it always is. As some leaders said long back, the world is divided into two segments, one those who had seen the Taj and the unlucky ones who had not,” said tourist guide Ved Gautam. Jeethu Joseph And Mohanlal’s Courtroom Drama Almost Delivers A Cathartic High Half an hour into Jeethu Joseph’s Neru, almost all the cards are on the table, unlike the filmmaker’s previous outings. We know almost everything about the crime. We know the accused, and the court proceedings have started.

and used for character assassination in sequences which mirror some high profile trials. Neru is also the story of redemption of Vijayamohan (Mohanlal), a down and out lawyer who hasn’t been in court for a long time after being suspended from the bar.

No groundbreaking reveal happens in the two hours that follow, as we have come to expect in his films. Yet, it leaves one with a sense of satisfaction. The best of Jeethu’s films rely on powerful ideas, which often helped to mask the other inadequacies, even in Drishyam, where the domestic sequences before the crime were quite bland. Neru, too, has one compelling idea at its heart, the challenges faced by Sara (Anaswara Rajan), a blind rape victim, in identifying the accused and in convincing the world

that her other senses can make up for the lack of eyesight. This one idea is powerful enough to sustain the film, even when it is close to sagging. The way she identifies him is quite a story. No less is the manner in which it is ripped apart in court

Quite a few of the court scenes are riveting, especially the ones featuring the victim, while some others seem clumsy, like the frequent reaction shots in the courtroom of a sneering accused whenever the public prosecutor faces a challenge or of people looking suitably impressed when the prosecutor scores a point, and of a lawyer frequently prompting the witnesses without getting noticed. The constant shifts to television chatter to further explain the courtroom proceedings also appear as a downer. Some passing references to Drishyam are present as well. The writing decision to let Sara have almost as much role to play in the fight as the lawyer, hits the target. Her character is a world away

from the silent victims in our movies, on behalf of whom brave men fought. Anaswara Rajan aces the role, playing it with a lot of conviction. Mohanlal performs in understated manner, bringing a certain shift in dialogue delivery, making it sound more natural than in his recent films. It was a joy to see him in form after quite a long time, although it is still not a patch on the best of his performances. After the forgettable 12th Man and the passable Drishyam 2, Jeethu has found his mojo in Neru. The entire act of chipping away at the lies and obfuscations of a powerful defendant and navigating the sometimes torturous process of seeking justice, which forms the better part of the film, almost delivers a cathartic high. Shah Rukh Khan And Rajkumar Hirani Deliver A Drama That Delights And Drags In Equal Measure Early in Dunki, a simplistic but heartwarming take on the poor illegal immigrants from Punjab who make dangerous journeys in a desperate search for greener pastures, a set of hopefuls find a way to crack the English test. They memorise a paragraph by rote and decide to parrot it to the examiners by just changing the name of the topic. Inadvertently, the long scene with diminishing returns becomes a metaphor for the sameness that surrounds Rajkumar Hirani’s storytelling. Over the years, he has engaged the audience with almost the same story structure, but has always managed to imbue it with a beating heart and a smiling face. In Dunki, Hirani’s first and longawaited collaboration with Shah Rukh Khan, the purpose and social concern is again laudable, but the storytelling feels facile and laboured after a point, largely because Hirani doesn’t want to test newer ways to put his point across. The spontaneity that we associate with his work is sadly missing. Set in a small town in Punjab, Dunki goes into flashback to tell the

tale of four characters with modest means who want to immigrate to London to get over their difficulties in life. When they are about to give up, Hardy (Shah Rukh), an ex-armyman, comes into their lives to make their dream a reality by taking a circuitous, illegal route. Along the way, he develops a soft corner for Manu (Taapsee Pannu) only to realise that her wish to cross over to a foreign land is stronger than her love for the man who gave her the belief.

So when the film presents the challenges as a novelty, it doesn’t come as a surprise. They feel tepid in picturisation and we keep looking for a little more nuance and a little more poignancy. More importantly, in the light-hearted first half, the jokes around English and Englishmen start feeling repetitive. And, some, like one around the national anthem, don’t land properly. Perhaps, Hirani has chosen England over the the US and Canada because he could use the colonial connection, but in the present scenario the illegal immigration to the US and Canada is more newsworthy and relatable. Once the dust settles down, one could pretty much guess where the film is headed. The narrative sags in the middle overs. Things look up in the second half when the film finally moves from the comic set pieces, most of which are part of the trailer, to convey the larger message behind illegal migration. But after a couple of powerful scenes, it feels like the writers

are straining to take the film to a fitting conclusion. The musical tapestry, particularly the combination of Javed Akhtar and Sonu Nigam in ‘Nikle The Kabhi Hum Ghar Se’ and Varun Grover and Javed Ali’s chemistry in ‘Chal Ve Vatna’, gives goosebumps. Shah Rukh surrenders himself to Hirani’s universe and the way he evocatively puts nation over asylum in a courtroom sequence, makes a strong socio-political statement and is one of the highlights of the film. The problem is that the love story between Hardy and Manu doesn’t create much magic. Taapsee fails to cast the spell that the story requires for the boy to wait for her for 25 years. The supporting cast is solid, particularly Vicky Kaushal, who reprises a staple character in Hirani’s universe, earlier essayed by Jimmy Shergil and Ali Fazal in Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. and 3 Idiots respectively. Vikram Kocchar and Anil Grover are efficient but Boman Irani isn’t tested much. Overall, not the best of Hirani, but Dunki has just about enough to make you chuckle and churn. Captain Miller For his upcoming period action drama Captain Miller, Dhanush is joining hands with filmmaker Arun Matheswaran, who is best known for acclaimed movies like Rocky and Saani Kaayidham. The eagerly awaited project is set to hit the big screen during Pongal 2024. From the official teaser and posters, it is evident that the movie is a gory actioner that is set in the pre-In-

Renowned filmmaker Sundar C is set to make a comeback with the fourth instalment of his famous Aranmanai movie franchise, for the upcoming Pongal season. The project, which has been titled Aranmanai 4, features Tamannaah Bhatia and Raashii Khanna in the lead roles. Sundar himself plays a key role in the movie, along with Yogi Babu and VTV Ganesh. The official release date of the project is yet to be revealed.

In a momentous feat, Tovino Thomas’ superhit Malayalam film 2018 has become India’s official entry to Oscars 2024 after achieving tremendous success in theatres. The announcement was made by renowned filmmaker Girish Kasaravalli, chairman of the Film Federation of India’s (FFI) selection committee. Kasaravalli said that the movie was selected due to its relevant theme of climate change and the challenges of people in the midst of what is called as development in the society.
