Hoshino Resorts TOMAMU Ice Village

僤ꅿ 50.".6 䏞⧺勠 *DF 7JMMBHF

From the enormous vistas and the top-grade powder snow of ski areas in Niseko to Rusutsu Resort overlooking Lake Toya and Mt. Yotei, Hokkaido has many popular ski resorts. At Hoshino Resorts TOMAMU you can enjoy Ice Village, including a hotel and a church that are entirely made of ice, experience its fairytale-like atmosphere and an evening picnic under the starry sky. At Lake Shikotsu you can try your hand (or foot!) at Ice Walking; the dry suits will save you even if you fall. At Furano, you can hop a ride in a hot air balloon and enjoy the sheer power of snowy nature from above, and around the mouth of Tokachi River (Otsu Beach) you can marvel at the crystal clear, jewel-like ice.

Pond Smelt Ice Fishing

The snow is also abundant in the Tohoku region, so skiing and all kinds of winter activities are the order of the day! Ride the Tsugaru Railway (Aomori Pref.) and toast your hands and feet at the coal stoves in its cars. If you get off at the Kanagi Station, you can join a snow drifting experience tour. At Lake Gando (Iwate Pref.), open holes on the frozen lake and fish for pond smelts.Do you want more? Snowshoe at Urabandai (Fukushima Pref.) and marvel at the “Blue Ice waters of Ono River’s Fudo Waterfall - the name comes from the water’s tint when frozen. And, head up to Ginzan Onsen (Yamagata Pref.), get lost in the old hot spring town with its wooden buildings, take in the marvelous views and soak in an open-air bath while gazing out at the snow-covered scenery.

Kanto also has its share of snow-related activities. Among them is Kusatsu International Snow & Spa Resort (Gunma Pref.) where besides skiing and snowboarding you can also head over to nearby Mt. Kusatsu-Shirane for some snowshoeing at its “Yugama crater lake, which is not accessible from the road during winter because it is closed. Also, you can head up to Mt. JEANS Nasu (Tochigi Pref.) and enjoy a “fat bike ride on the woodland path. In Sagamiko Resort Pleasure Forest (Kanagawa Pref.), the winter illumination is also famous and if you want some serious slope play, try Snow Paradise’s 50-m slope. Or try snow tubing where you slide on the snow in a rubber raft.

SNOW IN JAPAN 2018

Koshin-etsu

ćŒâĽŒéŚŠ

The Koshin-etsu region includes Yamanashi, Nagano and Niigata prefectures and here you can find some of Japan’s most representative ski resorts. At HAKUBA VALLEY (Nagano Pref.), one of the largest snow resorts in Japan, the powder snow is so topgrade and both novices and advanced skiers can enjoy themselves on 131 runs. The Shiga Highlands (Nagano Pref.) offer many onsen where you can relax after having fun with the snow. At nearby Jigokudani Yaen-koen, you may see wild Japanese monkeys enjoy soaking in onsen on cold days. At Prince Naeba Resorts (Niigata Pref.), 34 fireworks events are scheduled from December to March. In Fujiten Snow Resort (Yamanashi Pref.), you can ski, snowboard and sled while, at the same time, enjoying spectacular views of Mt. Fuji.

Near Suganuma in Gokayama (Toyama Pref.), which is famous for UNESCO World Heritage site gassho-zukuri houses, you can try kanjiki (Japanese snowshoe) trekking. At some point you can also stop and enjoy fondue on a table of snow (a popular choice for many visitors). In Takasu Snow Park (Gifu Pref.), there is a 180-m snow slider that you can enjoy either with snowshoes or simply by butt-sliding. This last option is so easy that even first-timers can wholeheartedly enjoy! SKIJAM KATSUYAMA (Fukui Pref.) is one of the largest snow resorts in western Japan and banana boat riding is very exciting. In Daisen White Resort (Tottori Pref.), the slope offers a magnificent view of the Sea of Japan.

The Sayama Ski Area is a place highly recommended for firsttimers: about 40 minutes from Ikebukuro, this ski area is of the indoor type so you can enjoy your skiing without worrying about the weather. Or about equipment for that matter, since you can rent everything you need right there in sizes suited for both adults and children. Let's learn how to make Japanese dishes from a professional chef at a Japanese ryokan. This time we made "mushroom and salmon foil packets," "mushroom rice," and "mushroom chawanmushi."

Matsumoto

Japan's Seasonal Food

Mushroom and salmon foil packets Directions 1. Skin the salmon fillets and sprinkle with salt and pepper. 2. Separate a bundle of enoki into 4 smaller bundles. 3. Remove the stems of the shiitake and cut them into 4 pieces.

4. Remove the stems of the enoki, maitake, and shimeji mushrooms and break into bite-sized pieces by hand. 6. Slice the green onion into diagonal slices about 1 cm long. 7. Prepare 4 sheets of aluminum foil about 30 cm by 50 cm and place the above ingredients on them.

5. Cut the zucchini into rounds about 5 mm thick.

8. Sprinkle the ingredients with sake and salt, add a pat of butter on top, and wrap in the foil. 9. Place the 4 foil-wrapped pieces on an oven tray and cook for 15 to 20 minutes at 170 degrees Celsius in the oven. I was ver y surprised that I could make such a delicious dish using only simple sea-

Chef's Advice

From Germany

From Korea

It is best to add salt in small quantities while cooking and then add more salt and/or soy sauce to the finished dish to taste. This method avoids making a dish too salty. Wrapping the ingredients in a foil packet will create maximum umami.

What is Japanese Wine? ➊

The place where the first winemaking started in Japan was Kofu City, Yamanashi Prefecture. Along with the beginning of wine imports in 1861 upon the opening of Yokohama Port, people in the Meiji Period started serious winemaking to produce Japanese wine. Today, Japanese wine is highly appreciated for its quality and taste. Among others, Koshu Wine, which is made with Koshu Grapes, the only grapes dedicated to winemaking in Japan, has been drawing increasing attention.

Japanese wine is made in Japan, only with domestic grapes, without using imported grapes or concentrated juice.

White wine & sashimi, tempura, grilled salted samma (saury) Koshu Wine is very light and refreshing; therefore, it goes really well with dashi- and salt-based Japanese dishes. As the iron content is low, it won’t give any fishy smell even with raw fish (sashimi).

Sparkling wine & oden For oden, you may want to try sparkling wine. The dashi of oden and the fruity taste of sparkling wine create a perfect harmony.

Red wine & yakitori (tare), sukiyaki, nimono Muscat Bailey A is the most produced grape variety for red wine in Japan. The red wine, which is made with this hybrid grape variety from Niigata Prefecture, goes wonderfully well with Japanese dishes based on soy sauce and mirin.

The amount of Japanese wine made only with domestically grown grapes that is available in Japan is about 4% of that of all wine available. However, looking at its increasing popularity, major companies in the liquor industry have set out on an expansion of their Japanese wine business. Asahi Breweries has reinforced its viniculture by establishing its own orchard in Hokkaido. Suntory has started Shiojiri Winery, which can carry out the entire wine production process from growing grapes to brewing. Mercian Corporation and Sapporo Brewery are also planning to increase the production of grapes at their own orchards. Japanese wine is expected to be more readily and affordably available in the near future.

She added grated ginger to miso so that the oden would warm up the bodies of people waiting in the cold.

Okunitama-jinja Shrine

Going out of the south exit of Fuchu Station and walking through the street lined with zelkova trees stretching about 500 meters, you will come to Okunitama-jinja Shrine, a famous spiritual “power spot.” Enshrining the guardian god of Musashi no Kuni, the old shrine with more than 1,900 years of history has been known as a place for bringing good luck and romance and for repelling evil. From April 30 to May 6, an annual festival, Kurayami Matsuri, is held. Portable shrines are carried around vigorously in the dark at night and hanging lanterns create a mesmerizing atmosphere.

Otaka no Michi & Masugata no Ike Pond Yusuigun (group of springs) Otaka no Michi is a walking path stretching along small streams in the residential area. You can relax and walk while listening to the murmuring of the streams. Along the path, there is Masugata no ike Pond, which is, according to legend, a place where a beautiful woman suffering from serious illness was able to rid herself of her problem and regain her beautiful appearance by purifying herself with the water.

Created in the grounds of a villa built for a businessman in the Taisho period (1912-1926), this garden is based on the natural topography, with trees and ponds that are best viewed from circulating walking paths. It is the first nationally designated scenic spot in the Tama area. The water of the pond comes from spring water, and has long been known for its high-quality water. Adorable ducks can be seen enjoying the water from spring to early summer. Around the time of autumn foliage, Japanese maple tree leaves and the pond create a wonderful view.

“Koku Vege, Kokubunji-brand vegetables with 300 years of history

Kokubunji is also a place for high-quality water, as shown from the fact that Masugata no Ike Pond Yusuigun (group of springs) has been selected as one of the 100 high-quality water sources in Japan. The vegetables that have been grown in this area with high-quality water for about 300 years are now called “Koku Vege. Some restaurants in Kokubunji serve original dishes with Koku Vege-brand vegetables. Enjoy delicious dishes with fresh local vegetables only available in this area. The restaurants serving Koku Vege dishes have this mark at the entrance. att. JAPAN

Bus 塴壍 Long-distance buses in Japan are run by numerous companies including JR. Buses are generally more economic than traveling by plane or train but do take longer and can be affected by traffic jams at busy times of the day or night. Local buses run all over Japan as well as in the major cities and sometimes English instructions or stop announcements are used but this is not the case ever ywhere. We recommend you ask drivers to remind you of where you must disembark prior to setting off.

Harazuru Onsen is located on the border of Fukuoka and Oita prefectures in Kyushu, facing the Chikugo River, the largest river in Kyushu with a total length of 143 km starting from its source on Mt. Aso. The onsen is considered to have been found more than 135 years ago, and there are several stories regarding the discovery of the original hot spring. One is that on a snowy day, there was a place not covered with snow, and the place was found to be a hot spring. Another is that after an injured crane soaked in a water pool it was cured and flew off, and the pool turned out to be a hot spring. The water is well known as “double beauty effective water” because it is mildly alkaline with sulfur, which has an effect of removing old, dead skin cells as well as a whitening effect. From May to October every year, cormorant fishing is held on the Chikugo River and you can see it from a boat while eating delicious food. Fruit picking, such as grapes, persimmons and other seasonal fruits is also available. A triple waterwheel in Hishino is a very rare sight in all of Japan. Akizuki is a place where an old castle town atmosphere still remains. You can tour around the main historical spots in about one hour or so on foot. Akizuki is famous for cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves, but visiting in the quieter seasons of summer or winter is also recommended. Surrounded by mountains, the town is dotted with old samurai residences with nagayamon gates (tenement houses with a gate), and earthen walls, and Japanese original countryside scenery still remains.

The triple waterwheel in Hishino

An only-in-Tokyo experience! The world’s only ROBOT RESTAURANT! If you’re not sure where to get your evening entertainment in Tokyo, think no more: the Robot Restaurant is the place to go! You’ve probably met the two gigantic robots somewhere in Kabukicho. But by entering the restaurant you’re literally stepping into a different, shiny world! Enormous machines, beautiful girls and a mix of elements from classical and modern Japanese culture create a performance that can’t fail to lift your spirits! Music and delicious drinks also add to the picture and add up to a Tokyo experience you will never forget! The Robot Restaurant is extremely popular so we recommend booking early. Location: 1-7-1, Kabukicho, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo Call for Reservation: 03-3200-5500 (English is available) Phone hours: 9:00am - 10:00pm Business hours: 3:30pm - 11:30pm URL: www.shinjuku-robot.com Reservations are highly recommended in advance as tickets sold on the day sell out very quickly.
