welcome to the november issue of atlantic ave magazine

any of us walk around with two voices in our head; one is perpetually grateful and one is constantly complaining. Can you relate? As I make my way around town I run into people who are in love with Delray and others who have a lot of gripes: Too much traffic. Too much development. Too much nightlife. Too noisy. Too much going on. Not enough going on. You get the picture. Truth is, it is healthy to complain, but like most things in life, everything is good in moderation. Without complaints, we may not see improvement. It is the squeaky wheel that gets the attention. Still, when I find myself or my friends tipping from moderation to whining, I’ll often ask them what they like in their lives. And if you’re a fortunate person, you’ll find that there is a lot of good in your life. I’ll give you an example. Whenever I call my friend Bob Costin—a 65 year resident of Delray—and ask him how he’s doing he replies as follows. “Every day that I wake up on the right side of the grass is a good day.” All of this is a long winded way of saying that I love Thanksgiving, because the holiday celebrates gratitude. In this issue of Atlantic Ave, we mention some of the things we are grateful for in Delray. Truth is, we can fill 10 magazines full of things we can be grateful for in our community and in a way, that’s what we do around here: spotlight the people, places, businesses, events, causes and happenings that make this a special and always interesting town. And as for the gripes; consider this if you would: it’s better to have traffic than empty streets, better to have investment than none at all and probably better to have too much to see and do than be bored. To all the readers, advertisers, staff, contributors and supporters of Atlantic Ave; thank you. I am personally grateful. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and a great month in Delray Beach. Saint Joseph’s Grills Up Success At Annual Back To School Barbeque

8 November 2013 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

The Jones Field was active with students, families, and faculty celebrating with food, fun, and fellowship at Saint Joseph’s Annual Back To School Barbeque! A good time was had by all, as students enjoyed games, an ice cream cart, and more! Technology was also brought to life outdoors as the children

competed in the QR Code Scavenger Hunt with iPads and iPhones in hand! The annual event, sponsored by Mississippi Sweets and the DuBois Family, welcomes everyone to the start of the school year and officially launches the school’s Annual Fund campaign. The event raised over $2,300 in support of the Annual Fund campaign for 2013-2014 and will be matched by an anonymous donor dollar-for dollar! The Annual Fund supports educational innovation, infrastructure, and facilities for academic performance, cultural enrichment, student health, spiritual development, and athletics. While tuition provides 82% of the funds required to sustain our school’s day-to-day operations, the Annual Fund is the cornerstone for bridging the gap between tuition and expenses. Additionally, the Annual Fund’s ultimate success provides remarkable experiences for students and helps make Saint Joseph’s an exceptional place for children.

were treated to pizza and soda and Café 95 had chocolate chips cookies for everyone to enjoy. In addition to bowling there was a Chinese Auction with over 25 prizes donated from our local business partners. The JARC residents especially liked choosing which container to put their raffle ticket in. They weighed each option very carefully and cheered for each other as their friends names were picked at the end. The fundraiser exceeded all expectations bringing in over $20,000 just days before the event. Donations are still coming in and JARC is thrilled to see that number grow. The money raised is being used for JARC’s Adult Day Training Program. It is JARC’s goal to purchase Ipads to use throughout the program. JARC Florida is a nonsectarian organization which provides group homes, apartments and vocational training for adults with development disabilities. The mission in partnership with the families of the clients is to promote independence dignity and self-respect in order to create more fulfilling lives. 10 November 2013 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

The 5th Annual Leslie Goldberg Memorial Bowling Fundraiser was held on October 13, 2013 at Strikes in Boca Raton. The event was sponsored by Judy Levis Markhoff who generously ensured that this year’s event was a success. Guests included JARC residents, families, volunteers, and JARC supporters. The day was filled with cheering each other on and congratulating each other on their great scores. All guests

JARC Supporter Nikki Joffe came up with a unique way to celebrate her birthday and support JARC at the same time. This past May as Nikki’s 31st birthday was approaching she decided to create a birthday campaign. She challenged her friends to donate “$31 for the 31 days until she turned 31.” The campaign was launched through emails, text messages and a Facebook campaign. She received huge support with many people donating more than the requested $31. At the end of her campaign she had raised nearly $2000. This money was earmarked for JARC’s very own Café 95. Nikki’s sister Hayley is a client of JARC’s Adult Day Training Program and works in Café 95. Cafe 95 was able to purchase new items that they were in need of continued page 12

Guests sampled cuisine from some of Palm Beach’s best restaurants while being treated to fine wines, creative cocktails and cold brews. “All of the restaurants had amazing food and it was so much fun to make my own cocktail at the interactive mixology bar in the Bombay Sapphire Lounge. I will definitely be back next year,” said Kim Rumsey, first time event guest and West Palm Beach resident. Not only were guests treated to savory food and delicious beverages, but they also had the chance to play a hole on the fantastic miniature golf course provided by Putt’n Around, toss around the bean bag during a game

of corn-hole with friends or commemorate their experience with digital images sent directly to their smart phones provided by Digital Imaging, all while enjoying the live band, Box of Rocks. But beyond the delectable treats, the Delray Bash raised much needed funds to support its local programs that serve around thousands of people each year in and around Palm Beach County. “We are so grateful for everyone who came out to enjoy the amazing food, wine, spirits and beer” said Cariann Moore, Area Director. “The Delray Bash is one of our main fundraising events of the year and the dollars raised will help us on our mission to save lives by preventing lung disease and promoting lung health.” Generous contributions help to ensure that we can continue “Fighting for Air” through education, research and advocacy. continued page 20

20 November 2013 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

On Tuesday, October 8, Scuola Vecchia on Atlantic Avenue opened their doors to teenage visitors from around the world. Saint Andrew’s School in Boca Raton, hosted the Round Square International Conference and over 750 students and their teachers, from all corners of the globe visited Boca Raton for a five-day conference. On Tuesday, nearly fifty international-student guests blended with their host American families to enjoy an evening

of authentic pizza, pasta, and salad. Saint Andrew’s parent, Sia Bartone, organized and hosted this event. The evening also included a visit by Dina Fesler, the creator and author of Children’s Culture Connection, a non-profit to help American and international students form a positive relationship with Afghan young people. The theme of the Round Square International Conference was Waves of Change and keynote presenters, Adam Braun from Pencils of Promise, Jessica Jackley of Kiva, Craig and Marc Kielburger from Free the Children, and Dr. Peter Diamandis from XPrize, inspired participants to understand that they are leaders that can make a difference in the world. Round Square is an organization of over a hundred schools devoted to the IDEALS of international understanding, democracy, environmental stewardship, adventure, leadership and service. The organization was founded based on the ideas of Kurt Hahn who believed that schools should have a greater purpose beyond preparing students academically and that young people need to be empowered and develop skills to be the leaders of tomorrow’s world.

Now that Delray Beach is a rising star in the art, culture and social scene, it might seem a little difficult to find affordable activities, shops or restaurants. I am here to prove you wrong. Delray Beach offers a mix of high-end boutiques with laid-back restaurants, and events for the whole family or nightclubs for night owls. Here is what you can do in Delray Beach in November for $50 or less.

‘T

is the season for shopping! National Deal Week is November 27 through December 4 and is the best time to shop for holiday presents so you’re well prepared. This holiday begins the day before Thanksgiving and incorporates Black Friday as well as Cyber Monday, giving you no reason to miss out on tons of deals. If you hate going to the mall like moi, think outside of the box this year in regard to present shopping and stay local. Not only does Delray offer the best downtown for an eclectic array of shops, but there’s an art show thrown in the mix, too, as an added bonus. The 14th Annual Downtown Delray Thanksgiving Weekend Art Festival is held November 30 and December 1 and is the perfect place to not only find one-

of-a-kind gifts for the special people in your life, but also shed some turkey and dressing presents from Thanksgiving. The Festival is open both days from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is free to the public, so grab the walking sandals, and enjoy the brisk air and fine goods from local and national vendors including jewelry, arts, crafts, pottery, ceramics, painting, photography, and much more. The twoday Festival is held along Fourth Avenue and Atlantic Avenue and your perfect present awaits! Visit www.artfestival.com or call (561) 243-1077 for more information.

don’t want to work, I want to bang on the drum all day! True statement, so how do we make this happen? Instead of quitting your job, how about you indulge in your drum-banging needs and get your fix of major music every Friday in November! November is International Drum Month and if you haven’t yet experienced the Free Friday Night Concert Series at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts Pavilion, you’re in for a real treat. Each Friday features a different lineup and is the perfect way to let out your inner bongo man at each concert sesh. String

Theory, a local favorite, kicks off the month with their November 1 performance, playing rock, reggae, classic, pop, and everything in between. The Resolvers follow suit on November 8 with an explosive show belting out reggae, ska, jazz, funk and soul from 10 musicians, five singers, and a complete horn section (everything and the kitchen sink!). KillBillies hit the stage next on November 15 and utilize banjos, tin whistles, mandolins and more to create a funky sound including Bluegrass, folk, rock and country for a whistlin’ good time. November 22 is home to Galo’s Tribute to Santana, a band created with the idea of duplicating the Santana stage experience for your listening pleasure, followed by The Petty Hearts, the ultimate Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers tribute band on November 29. Come on guys, Don’t Do Me Like That! Music starts at 7:30 p.m., rain or shine, so bring your blankets and chairs because you’re going to jam the night away. There will be food trucks and a cash bar available, too, so don’t worry about the cooler because a complete good time is at your fingertips. Did I mention admission is free? The Delray Beach Center for the Arts Pavilion is located at 51 N. Swinton Ave. Visit www.delraycenterforthearts.org or call (561) 243-7922 for more information.

obble, gobble, Mr. Turkey Man. November is National Roasting Month and I’m sure everyone and their uncle appreciates a good bird, but what about the side effects, you ask? I’ve got the best way for you to get in a little action before the food-

fest that is Thanksgiving, so get your brain out of gravy heaven and listen up. The 27th Annual Delray Beach Turkey Trot 5K Run and Walk is held this year on November 23, which gives us a good five days head start to ward off the impending stomach bulge. Gather the groupies (all ages welcome!) and head to Anchor Park for this fun jaunt along gorgeous A1A and burn a little turkey sweat equity. Registration begins at 6 a.m. and the race starts at 7:30 a.m. and costs $25 for the run and $20 for the walk. Proceeds from the Turkey Trot benefit the Keith Straghn Feed the Hungry Thanksgiving Drive, so feel good knowing your efforts are helping someone else enjoy Thanksgiving. So let’s add this up: beautiful run/walk along A1A, burn some extra space for turkey time, benefits a good cause and have fun with friends and family. Sounds like a win, win, win to me. Anchor Park is located at 340 S. Ocean Blvd. Visit www.mydelraybeach. com or call (561) 243-7277 for more information.

orld Communication Week is November 1 through 7 and in honor of this holiday, I’m just going to put it out there: I want more fun! I want more time! I want more fun time! I’ve got a dose of the fun medicine and I’m willing to share with you, my faithful readers, so listen up. Putt’n Around, if you’re not aware for some silly reason, is a little Delray gem offering two beautifully landscaped and themed miniature golf courses, perfect for a group of friends or something different for a date night. As if the offerings could get any better than beer, wine and snacks, there is now a kitchen full of tasty treats. Check out this special: two rounds of 18 holes, two cheeseburgers, two stuffed pretzels and two beers/alcoholic drinks (up to $4), all for less than $50. Hello, deal of the century! Be sure to also attend Trivia Night on Tuesdays, beginning at 7:30 p.m., where the top teams win prizes, so gather your smartest friends and your thinking helmets! Putt’n Around hits a hole-in-one on the much needed fun-excursion home front so grab a putter and have some amusement with the main squeeze or friends. Putt’n Around is located at 350 N.E. Fifth Ave. Visit www.puttnaround. net or call (561) 450-6162 for more information.

t’s hard to define, but you know when you feel it. And it feels glorious! Pursuit of Happiness Week is November 7 through 13 and in case you’re slipping on the happy feelings, you’ve got a sure-fire event coming your way that’s chock full of goodfor-you feelings. The Second Annual Delray Beach Wine and Seafood Festival is back and is a great way to enjoy food, wine… and more food and wine. Held November 9 and 10, the Festival boasts 150 exhibitors, live entertainment on two stages, two wine gardens with more than 20 varieties of wine, an endless selection of seafood specialties and even wine and food pairing seminars. Seminars feature some of the Avenue’s best restaurants, including Caffe Luna Rosa, DaDa and 32 East, as they prepare food and wine pairings for $30 per seminar. The Festival is held along Atlantic Avenue from the Intracoastal to A1A and admission is free so that leaves more clams for you to purchase delicious treats and libations. Happiness is right around the corner and the pursuit is a delicious one! The Festival is open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday. ere at Caffe Luna Rosa, we’re all pretty much a family. We work together to take care of each other but most of all we work together to take care of the customers. As a food runner, my job is to bring orders from the kitchen to the tables so our servers can spend more time with customers. I’m also responsible for helping clear tables and reset them. But like just about everyone else here, I do whatever needs to be done to keep our customers happy. I’ll jump in and take an order if a server needs a hand or I’ll help a bartender restock glasses. After eight years here, I’ve gotten to know many of the regulars who come in for breakfast and lunch. They’re a part of the family too. I really love the way the customers treat us. No matter what the situation is, I always keep a smile on my face. I tell the customer, “you always win and we do whatever it takes to make you happy.” The people here at Caffe Luna Rosa have been very good to me. They shared in my happiness when I became a dad for the first time just a few months ago and they also supported me when I earned my U.S. citizenship. We really are a family here at Caffe Luna Rosa. always get asked how I ended up in Delray Beach. Maybe I have some gypsy blood, but after arriving in New York and backpacking across country there was no doubt the US was going to be my home I just had to decide where. I met my soul mate Noel in Chicago and he convinced me I needed some sun on my Celtic skin and so we packed up and headed south and it was the best decision we ever made. In 2009 we opened our pub Tim Finnegans, a bold move during tough economic times but we figured it’s now or never. It wasn’t easy but we made it and we are now into our fourth year in a much bigger, better, location. Delray Beach was a no-brainer for us. A thriving, cosmopolitan community with a friendly small-town feel. Step into Finnegans and you step into our home where there is nothing pretentious about us just honest Irish hospitality. More than meat and potatoes which you can’t beat, we offer delicious seafood steak and chicken dishes, full bar fairly priced and the largest selection of Irish whiskey’s in South Florida. Live music; from traditional jigs and reels to Celtic rock. Every town needs an Irish pub, hope you’ll make Tim Finnegans yours…. Slainte! Tim Finnegans 2885 S. Federal Hwy. ou may be surprised at some of the fascinating stories told during your Wicked Delray Ghost Tour. The route begins at the fountain at Veterans Park on Atlantic Avenue on the Intracoastal and extends to the railroad track. You will learn details that will surprise and entertain. I am your ghost guide, Marilyn Egan as together we explore the paranormal in casual, creative Delray Beach. Historic facts are the basis of the study as we stroll along Atlantic Avenue. We will be looking for evidence of spirits and energy from beyond. My stories revolve around many of the people who became dominant in business and in building the personality of the community as a fun, original and interesting destination. I believe many of them continue to remain where they achieved success and were the most productive and happy when they were alive. Of course, some characters were not so fortunate or constructive and these spooky spirits have also made their presence known. I hope you will discover another entertaining aspect of Delray Beach by joining me for a walk one evening beginning at 8 pm. Give me a call to schedule your reservation. Group rates are also available. 561-666-7906.

Do Good -Feel Good. The people of Delray are a giving, caring group that opens their wallets for a variety of causes. Because of some recent developments, we now wonder exactly how our generosity is being spent and how much of each dollar goes to the intended cause. I started “End Hunger Palm Beach” eight years ago with two things in mind. First of all, I partnered with CROS Ministries who feed and help the

Second of all, by giving to “End Hunger Palm Beach” you are guaranteed that 100% of every dollar goes ONLY to buy food for their programs. This year’s event will be held on November 25th at DIG Restaurant at 777 East Atlantic Ave. from 5-8PM. The cost is $35 and includes five food stations and a soft drink. A cash bar will be available with 100% of all drink sales going to buy food. Did I mention that we are organic and chemical free? This is a Do Good- Feel Good opportunity, don’t miss it. ovember begins with three major motion pictures opening nationally. “Ender’s Game” stars Harrison Ford and Sir Benjamin Kingsley, with Asa Butterfield “Hugo” as Ender Wiggin, a shy but gifted boy who is pulled from school to join the International Field Command under Commander Mazer Rackham (Kingsley) and Colonel Graff (Ford). Ender is trained by both his mentors to lead an epic battle that will determine the future of Planet Earth and the human race. Hailee Steinfeld and Abigail Breslin co-star and Gavin Hood (“X-Men Origins: Wolverine”) directs. November 1 Also opening November 1 is “Free Birds” a children’s animated feature about two turkeys who time-travel back to 1621 to try to change the tradition of having turkey as the main course for Thanksgiving dinner. Owen Wilson voices Reggie, a turkey pardoned by the President and relaxing at Camp David. Woody

Jennifer lawrence 40 November 2013 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Harrelson is Jake, leader of the rebel turkey forces who wants turkey taken off the menu. Additional voices are by Dan Fogler, Amy Poehler, Lesley Nicol and George Takei. Jimmy Hayward (“Horton Hears a Who”) directs. Does art imitate life? In “Last Vegas,” maybe. Michael Douglas plays Billy, a confirmed bachelor who suddenly decides to propose to his 30-something girlfriend. His best friends Paddy (Robert De Niro), Archie (Morgan Freeman) and Sam (Kevin Kline) rally to throw Billy a bachelor party in Las Vegas. What could possibly go wrong? Jon Turteltaub (“National Treasure”) directs and Dan Fogelman (“The Guilt Trip”) wrote the screenplay.

November 8 Hunky Chris Hemsworth is back as “Thor: The Dark World.” Thor faces an ancient race so mighty he has to swallow his pride and ask his imprisoned brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) for help. Natalie Portman returns as Thor’s best girlfriend Jane Foster as do Anthony Hopkins as Odin and Skellan Skarsgaard as Erik Selvig. Director Alan Taylor has a lot of TV credits (including “Sopranos”), but this is his first major motion picture. However, Taylor is signed to direct “Terminator 5” for a 2015 release. November 15 Could “The Wolf of Wall Street” be non-fiction? In a manner of speaking, sort of. Tough-guy specialist Martin Scorsese goes to the mean streets of lower Manhattan to tell the tale of Jordan Belfort, a high-flying penny stocks hustler whose world came crashing down when he refused to cooperate in the major securities fraud case of the 1990s that involved Wall Street, corporate banks and the mob. Belfort served 20 months for his noncooperation, but he got the last laugh writing a book about his experience. Brooklyn-born and bred Terrence Winter (“Boardwalk Empire,” “Sopranos”) adapted the book and Leonardo DiCaprio plays Jordan Belfort. The cast includes Jonah Hill, Matthew McConaughey, Cristin Milioti, Jon Favreau and Spike Jonze.

“Best Man Holiday,” written and directed by Malcolm D. Lee (“Scary Movie 5”), reunites a group of college friends 15 years after the wedding when they last saw each other. Lee, a cousin of Spike Lee, also wrote the 1999 original. The cast includes Taye Diggs, Nia Long, Morris Chestnut, Harold Perrineau, Terrence Howard and Regina Hall.

November 22 Here is the box office bonanza everyone has been waiting for. “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” continues the adventures of Katness Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) as they undertake a “Victor’s Tour” of the 74th Hunger Games, staged first as a movie in 2012. Ah, but Katness senses a rebellion is brewing and President Snow (Donald Sutherland) may be unaware. Returning are Liam Hemsworth, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Elizabeth Banks and Woody Harrelson. Director Francis Lawrence (“Water For Elephants”) has signed on for the final part of the trilogy by novelist Suzanne Collins. It will be produced in two parts for maximum profit.

November 27 Spike Lee has not made a film since “Inside Man” in 2006. He is back with a vengeance with “Old Boy.” Josh Brolin stars as Joe Doucett, an advertising executive who is kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement. When he is inexplicably released, Joe embarks on a mission to find out the who, what and why of his torment. The cast includes Samuel L. Jackson, Sharlto Copley, Rami Malek and Elizabeth Olson. “Homefront” stars Jason Statham as former DEA agent Phil Broker, who retires with his family to a small town only to encounter a meth king named Gator (James Franco), who knows nothing about peace and happiness. Sylvester Stallone adapted Chuck Logan’s novel and Gary Fleder (“Runaway Jury”) directs. “Black Nativity” is based on a play by Langston Hughes and adapted and directed by Kasi Lemmons. Forest Whitaker stars as the Rev. Clarence Cobbs and Angela Bassett is his wife Aretha. Jacob Lattimore is Langston, a boy raised in Baltimore by a single mother (Jennifer Hudson) who goes to visit his estranged family for Christmas.

Spinal Stenosis

Effective Non-Surgical Treatment Options By Dr. John Conde

{

Spinal Stenosis is a debilitating orthopedic and neurological disorder which affects primarily the geriatric population. It is characterized by lower back pain that can radiate into the legs and produce subsequent weakness.

46 November 2013 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Often times the weakness is associated with painful numbness and tingling. A common presentation is a drastic increase in pain when the individual is standing idle, as occurs when cooking or doing the dishes, or with prolonged walking and almost immediate relief when progressing to a sitting position. Spinal stenosis seems to be greatly misunderstood in the general population. It literally means a narrowing of the spinal canal, the bony structure which houses and protects the spinal cord and spinal nerve roots. The occlusion of the spinal canal is typically caused by one of four distinct entities; congenitally narrowed canal from birth, tumor, disc herniation, and or arthritis. By far the leading cause is arthritis in which bone spurs and changes in the morphology or shape of the vertebra lead to occlusion. Unfortunately, the primary recommendation for such a presentation as spinal stenosis is surgical intervention. However, non-surgical conservative treatment options have vastly improved over the years and should be a serious initial consideration before any invasive procedures. In-fact some of the most decorated ortho-

pedic and neurosurgeons in the world are now having their patients attempt conservative therapies prior to surgery. Revolutionary new treatment options are centered on decompressing the spine utilizing advanced stretching mechanisms, applying flexion based trunk exercises, manipulating the lumbar spine, and applying class IV cold laser therapy. Due to the fact that arthritis cannot be removed by any means, the main objectives of these therapies are to reposition the spinal joints and stretch the lumbar ligaments and tendons so that the canal is physically widened. The amount of widening necessary to produce positive longlasting change is very minimal and quite attainable. In conjunction with this, cold laser therapy decreases the healing time by increasing the metabolism of the injured cells and by reducing inflammation and spasm. Therapeutic exercises are applied to increase strength in the correct muscle groups so as to reinforce the widening of the canal. Give non-traditional yet effective treatment options a chance prior to any surgical intervention. Dr. John Conde is a Board Certified Chiropractic Neurologist, one of only one thousand in the country. He holds diplomate status through the American Chiropractic Neurology Board. He provides specialized care for difficult cases of backneck pain, numbness-tingling, vertigo-dizziness balance disorders, fibromyalgia, migraines, AD/ HD, autism, and dyslexia. His office is located at the Atlantic Grove in Delray Beach, FL and can be reached at (561) 330-6096, drconde@thecondecenter.com, and at www. thecondecenter.com

Tooth Decay is the Single Most Common Chronic Childhood Disease

{

BY Craig Spodak, DMD, PA

Research shows that children’s tooth decay is on the rise, but there are numerous preventative measures to ensure oral health, and subsequently, general health.

OVERVIEW The standard advice for a healthy smile still holds true, including brushing after meals, flossing once a day, dental cleanings twice a year, and not consuming too much candy or sugar. However, somehow this information is not getting passed along to young children. According to a Center for Disease Control and Prevention report, tooth decay in primary (baby) teeth has increased among children aged 2 to 5 years across all income levels. This finding makes tooth decay the most pervasive chronic disease among children, five times more prevalent than asthma. Water fluoridation, the controlled addition of fluoride to a public water supply, has helped largely to prevent cavities. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control listed water fluoridation as one of the ten great public health achievements of the 20th century. However, the reason for the increase of cavities is linked to sugary and acidic drinks and foods, including energy drinks and soft drinks. CAUSES OF DECAY Early Childhood Tooth Decay is tooth decay that occurs in the primary teeth of young children. It arises when the child’s teeth are frequently exposed to sugary liquids for long periods of time. Such liquids include fruit juice, soda and other sweetened liquids, milk, breast milk and formula. Eating patterns and food choices are important factors among children that affect how quickly tooth decay may develop. The reason is a sticky film of bacteria, called “plaque,” that constantly forms on teeth and gums. Every time bacteria comes in contact with sugar and starch in the mouth, acid is produced, which attacks teeth for 20 minutes or longer. After many attacks, tooth decay can develop. Additionally, prolonged exposure to

48 November 2013 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

acids can do permanent damage to teeth by producing a condition called “erosion,” or the loss of hard tissues for the tooth surface. Tooth decay can begin as soon as a baby’s teeth come in, usually by age six months or so. Decay in baby teeth can cause pain, and if left untreated, can destroy the teeth of an infant or young child, leaving permanent teeth to grow improperly. Tooth decay can also have an effect on a child’s general health as he/she may have difficulty eating, resulting in poor nutrition.

PREVENTATIVE MEASURES Babies and young children rely on parents and caregivers for good health. Take an active role in caring for your child’s teeth

by cleaning them at home, providing a balanced and healthy diet, and scheduling regular dental visits. It’s helpful for the first dental visit to occur within six months after the first tooth appears, and no later than the first birthday. During this visit, the dentist can check for decay and other conditions and show you how to properly clean your child’s teeth. It’s important that parents and caregivers start oral care early at home by teaching and practicing healthy habits that children will continue into adulthood. Spodak Dental Group is a comprehensive dental practice providing all general and specialty services in one convenient facility. Is Your Cell Phone Giving You Wrinkles? By Kristin Heather

Last month, I discussed what a fantastic guide the skin is in learning what your body needs to heal. If you let it, skin will lead you to the very cells that need repair. All inflammation starts at our cells, all degeneration and aging starts at our cells, and therefore, all healing starts at our cells.

Our cells face extreme natural and unnatural pressures every day. Our bodies are electric with constant electromagnetic waves running through them to fuel the health of blood vessels and tissue. According to www. optimumesthetics.com, “Magnetic fields cause or increase motion of ions and electrolytes in the tissues and fluids of the body. This movement stimulates chemical and electric actions in the tissues of the body, helping them to rebalance or heal themselves where necessary.” The electricity works to bring nutrients easily into cells and move wastes easily out of cells. Cell balance and repair are dependent on the state of our natural electricity. Nutritional imbalances, lack of oxygen, and contact with chemicals can affect electrical circuitry. Cells are also constantly exposed to higher electromagnetic frequencies. Electro-smog is the dangerous cloud of radiation caused by cell phones, wireless Internet, microwaves, smart meters, etc. that can throw off cells’ power to balance and repair. If cells are not healing efficiently, it can lead to a number of health issues, such as premature aging. Aging happens when our cells’ ability to repair themselves declines, and currently we are aging in a faster, more extreme way due to external irritants, poor nutrition from bad food habits and depleted soil, highly toxic ingredients in our supplements, toxins in everyday products like deodorant and toothpaste, electro-smog, and several other sources. We witness aging all over our body, but we tend to really notice it on our skin. When your skin is sagging where it didn’t before or wrinkled where it once was plump, it is guiding you to the source of the problem, which exists on the cellular level. It is bringing at-

50 November 2013 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

tention to internal toxicity that is affecting your cells’ working properly. Unfortunately, to address outward signs of aging we spend money and time solely focusing on topical products and procedures that may seem to help, but do not truly address the source of the problem. To give our cells support, we must look beyond topical treatments to internally detoxifying and healing. PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy) is a non-invasive and relaxing treatment that is widely used in Europe to treat a plethora of health issues as it penetrates into the cellular level, balances cells’ electricity, and enhances the body’s ability to function. The therapy uses a lower frequency than the man-made high frequencies that throw us off, and increases circulation and cell metabolism so that the entire body, all of its organs and systems can repair and work to their best potential. Since PEMF stimulates the body’s natural healing systems, it can effectively be used to address any health problem: broken bones, chronic pain, headaches, digestive issues, and menstrual symptoms to name some. Essentially, everyone can benefit from PEMF as we live in a toxic environment surrounded by an invisible cloud of electro-smog. I have found PEMF very effective when used as a compliment to other topical treatments for unwanted signs of aging, specifically because it enhances the detoxification process, which is essential when healing any skin issues. PEMF works throughout the body to benefit all of the major organs and to focus on repairing the severe damage caused by man-made electromagnetic frequencies. The

result of PEMF treatments is better internal health. And, as you know, when your internal health improves, your skin reaps the benefits.

As a forerunner in modern skin care services and anti-aging, Kristin founded Nourishe in Delray Beach and currently heads aesthetic science research and development. Kristin’s revolutionary approach to DNA Repair and her extensive training with some of the best professionals in the industry has made her the expert in healing and improving the skin naturally and holistically. There are no antibiotics to upset the stomach, no topical Benzyol Peroxide or Retin-A to peel and burn skin, and NO injections into painful cystic lesions. Here is how it works (a little biology and little physics): IPL acts by what dermatologists refer to as photodynamic therapy. In a typical acne lesion (pimple) there are two main issues. One is a blocked pore with the back-up of sebum (skin oil). The other is the Propionibacterium or P. acnes for short. P. acnes love to feed on and multiply in that backed up sebum and create an inflammatory mess. Thankfully, while P. acnes indulge on all that skin oil in blocked pores, the bacteria is also producing a molecule that can be targeted by certain wavelengths of light. When P. acnes absorb this wavelength of light, emerging from a hand held device that is moved around a patients face, they create a lethal singlet of oxygen within the microorganism itself, resulting in the selective destruction of the bacteria, and sparing EVERYTHING else around it. The nitty gritty details are complex bio-physiochemistry, not pleasurable reading for the consumer, but trust the doctor, this is a safe and easy treatment that brings positively

enchanting results. Not only does IPL have FDA approval for acne but because of its safe and effective profile, it also has gained FDA approval for the treatment of age spots, Rosacea, spider veins and many other skin lesions. Intense Pulse Light is one of the safest acne treatments available, with no known side effects. A single IPL session for the treatment of one’s entire face may take only as long as twenty minutes. Patients should expect to leave the office looking a little red for an additional twenty minutes, during which time one should plan to keep out of the sun. IPL is not a single treatment, but a therapeutic process. Clinical studies indicate that a protocol of two treatments per week for about four weeks will yield the greatest results. Finally, that long sought after relief from acne with the most proven, safe, effective and FDA approved IPL treatments available. Shouldn’t you send Acne packing once and for all? Jump Start Those Resolutions

{

By Ashley Sica

So it’s only November but before you know it the New Year will be here and it will be time to make some resolutions. You can bet the majority of them will be health and or fitness related.

But why wait till after the holidays are gone and the pounds have piled on to make these resolutions? This year commit to getting fit before the ball drops. To make sure you’re on the right track now, lets look at the 3 main components to fitness. What’s on you fork? You’ve heard it before and you’ll hear it again …nutrition is everything. If you’re not eating the right foods at the right time (timing is crucial) you will have a difficult time achieving desirable results. No matter how many hours are spent working out, if your nutrition is not on point you will constantly be fighting an uphill battle. I would recommend aiming for 5-6 mini meals a day consisting of lean proteins, veggies, healthy fats and the proper carbohydrates. If you were looking for a recommendation on how to eat properly I would recommend taking a look at the book/recipes of Clean Eating by Tosca Reno. It’s a great book and easy to understand. Now that your nutrition is under control lets take a look at your workout regimen. This should contain a balanced mix of cardiovascular and resistance training. As cardio goes, the best regimen for “fat blasting” would be High Intensity Interval Training. This type of training consists of intense bouts of exercise followed by a short period of rest or low intensity exercise. By mixing bursts of high intensity work with short periods of recovery, you are overloading both the aerobic and anaerobic systems while getting the benefits of both cardiovascular and resistance training in one session. The best thing about this type of training is the large caloric expenditure in a short amount of time. After a H.I.I.T. workout, your metabolism will be elevated more AFTER the workouts than compared to lower intensity

54 November 2013 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

training where calories are mostly burnt DURING the workout. The days of long, slow cardio sessions are over and you can kiss boredom and flab good-bye! Next up is resistance training. This is a MUST and cannot be skipped. Cardio is great for blasting fat but it will not totally re-shape your body alone. This is where the word “skinny fat” often comes from. Resistance training will give your body a desirable “shape” while helping to raise your resting metabolic rate. Did you know that for every pound of muscle gained your body burns anywhere from an extra 10-35 calories per day without having to lift a pinky! And don’t be afraid to really “lift” some weight. Ladies, I can promise you that you will not get “big and bulky!” I’m living proof that this doesn’t “just happen.” If you follow my advice of proper nutrition, HIIIT, and pushing it on the weights I can promise you you’ll love the benefits and dance your sexy-self right into the New Year, already ahead of the game! Go for it and you’ll never look back! Ashley holds a Bachelors Degree in Exercise Science and is a N.S.C.A certified trainer. She can be reached at (561) 274-7477 and at asica@thegym111.com

Strand Corrected

{

By mark hasche

This month I’d like to address an ever increasing scenario within the salon: Color Correction.

I’ll paint the picture… Client walks in with Angelina Jolie dark brown (level 3) box colored hair. She’s been coloring her hair dark brown for the past 10 years. During the consultation process she hands a picture of Gwen Stefani to the colorist. Here is where it gets hairy (no pun intended). This ultra blonde look, while achievable in a day for some, might require trimesters for others. Patience is the key element to this equation. Hair texture and density, plus your color history, factored in with the current health of your hair will dictate the call to action. There are many paths a colorist can take to get you to that “No Doubt” blonde. Removing pigment from the hair can be done by using color remover. There are many types of color removers on the market. Powder and cream based lighteners being the most commonly used. This lightening process could take a few visits. If your colorist cares about the integrity of your hair they will take the necessary steps and time to make it a healthy transition. Without these measures you could end up with a chemical hair cut. Everyone knows chemical hair cuts aren’t cute!!! A chemical haircut is when a stylist/colorist over processes your hair by using chemicals too harsh for your hair type resulting in breakage. So don’t try this at home, trying to do a DIY color correction could result in something that resembles a spiky haired calico cat. The moral of this story is patience, patience, patience and a trusted colorist. Now hop on our time machine and fast forward to a year from now. The same client wants to go back to her Angelina Jolie dark

56 November 2013 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

brown hair because her friends think it looks better. While this process can be done most times in one day, it can require follow up visits due to occasional fading which depends on the porosity of said hair. Taking hair from high lift blonde to dark brown requires a few steps. First we have to reintroduce the red, yellow and orange pigments we removed back into the hair. This is commonly known as filling the hair. By replacing these pigments we insure that the end result is rich in tone and not flat or matte. After the hair is filled we can now color it with the desired shade. The end result: that red carpet worthy rich dark brown. Now in both cases the investment you’ve made in your hair can be insured only by using good quality hair care products. It is important to use these products to maintain the po-

rosity of your hair to help safe guard against fading. In the case you do experience fading, a simple in salon gloss can be done to refresh your new color. Tune in next month when this clients friends tell her she needs a pink mohawk. LOL, just kidding! This Divo is dipping out. 10 Thankful Things to Be

for in

Delray beach By linda brown

{ 1

Thanksgiving is our favorite holiday. After all, what’s not to like? Turkey, football and if you’re lucky, a four day weekend. It’s hard to find a flaw. But the best part of Thanksgiving is it’s a celebration of gratitude and in that spirit here’s some things we are thankful for this year.

While some parts of the country continue to deal with economic uncertainty, Atlantic Ave continues to draw crowds. For that we are grateful and happy to do our part to promote the best downtown around. And the growth continues with plans for a new Fairfield Inn on West Atlantic Avenue near I-95, plans for a new IPIC at the site of the old library and several large scale apartment complexes being planned for south of the Ave.

Family Promise of South Palm Beach County is a small non-profit that is quietly making a big difference in the lives of families that need assistance in our community. How big? Consider this: 38,174 meals served from November 2008 thru August 2013, 1,000 volunteers and an 85 percent success rate for all families seeking help—100 percent for those who graduate from Family Promise’s program.

3

Delray’s award winning beach draws about 1.8 million visitors a year. We are grateful that the beach was recently re-nourished and is looking great after getting whacked by Super Storm Sandy last year. The $9.2 million project covered 1.9 miles of the City’s coastline. Over 1 million cubic yards of sand and fill was dredged onto the beachfront from just north of Atlantic Avenue to just south of Linton Boulevard. Numerous environmental protections were implemented, including supplemental turtle monitoring to protect the Leatherback Turtles nesting in March and April and the preservation of the reef and Delray’s ship wreck site. For this, we are grateful. Money for these kinds of projects are hard to come by these days.

4

Special events are often criticized and yes sometimes they pose an inconvenience, but we should never forget the important role they play in bringing people to our community. Delray has been recognized with numerous awards for its efforts, including a boatload of hardware from the International Festival & Events Association.

5

City officials are costing out what it would mean to contract fire and EMS to the county. We’re not sure how the issue will play out, but we are grateful for the men and women who serve us at Delray Fire Rescue, one of the best departments in the state.

6

If fire goes to the county, will our Police Department follow? We hope not. But we are grateful for Delray’s finest. Here’s a stat to consider: In 2012, the department responded to over 95,000 calls for service. Wow... We owe Delray’s finest a big thanks.

7 8

We are grateful for the efforts to feed the needy every Thanksgiving at Pompey Park. For 32 years the Keith Straghn Memorial Foundation has helped over 500 families a year enjoy Thanksgiving and fellowship.

This Thanksgiving we give thanks to Nancy Hurd, the longtime director of the Achievement Center for Children and Families who is retiring after decades of exemplary service. She has touched the lives of thousands of children in Delray and has left a positive legacy that will endure for generations and generations.

9 10

We are thankful for the Frog Alley Community Garden. Not only are we excited to see urban farming take root in Delray, but we are thrilled to see the historic Frog Alley get some recognition.

Last but certainly not least, we are grateful to you our loyal readers, fans, friends, advertisers and contributors for making Atlantic Ave your local magazine. Whether you’re taking us on vacation to spots across the globe or sharing news tips and fashion advice, you do so much to make this a true community publication and a labor of love.

We wish you and yours a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Plumosa Elementary School

has always been the “little neighborhood” school in Delray

{

By linda brown

Plumosa doesn’t have a gifted program like Banyan Creek, doesn’t boast a nationally recognized Montessori magnet like S.D. Spady or an elementary IB program like Morikami Park Elementary. What Plumosa has always had is a rich history of being a community school that has quietly served a portion of eastern Delray for decades.

But things are changing and for the better. These days, Plumosa is quietly building a reputation as a magnet school for the arts. A devoted PTA, committed community volunteers and support from the City of Delray Beach and local business and arts leaders have given Plumosa an opportunity to create something special. The effort to raise the school’s profile and to raise much needed funds takes a major leap forward with a concert by the renowned “Black Violin,” Saturday, November 16 at 8 p.m. The concert will take place at Plumosa’s beautiful 650-seat auditorium at 2501 Seacrest Blvd. Tickets are $35 and VIP tickets are $75, which includes preferred seating and a catered reception with the artists following the event. Tickets can be purchased by visiting www. plumosafoundation.org or emailing info@plumosafoundation.org If you have not seen “Black Violin” you are in for a pleasant surprise. The band delivers an extraordinary and unique musical experience mixing hip-hop, rock, classical and R&B. “Black Violin”—classically trained viola and violin players Wil B. and Kev Marcus--are sensations on YouTube and have played major venues and events including The Apollo Theater and President Obama’s 2012 inauguration. They’ve collaborated with P. Diddy, Kanye West, 50 Cent, Tom Petty, Aerosmith and The Eagles. Not too shabby.

The duo met while in high school in Fort Lauderdale and have been together ever since. The group will also perform a special concert for the students of Plumosa November 15th that will include music and a

conversation about values, the importance of music in life and pursuing dreams. Event organizer James Mueller, a Plumosa parent, is excited about the concert and showcasing Plumosa’s program and ambitions. “This is a very important event for us,” he said. “We are fortunate to have Black Violin. This a great opportunity for the community to see what Plumosa has to offer.” Janet Meeks, the city of Delray’s Education Coordinator is also rallying support. “Plumosa is an important school in our city,” she said. “They need our support.” Plumosa is fortunate to have a 650 seat auditorium, a left over from the former Atlantic High School, which moved about 10 years ago to the corner of Atlantic and Congress avenues. Not too many elementary school programs have such a large facility. “There is an extraordinary breadth of students that attend Plumosa,” said Mueller who also chairs the Foundation Board. “Three quarters of the students qualify for subsidized meals. The unique opportunity the school provides for creative self-expression and exploration bridges cultural gaps, builds students’ confidence and opens their minds to discovering possibilities that they might not otherwise pursue. This makes Plumosa uniquely effective in helping children develop competence, confidence and character.”

If you can dream it Dror Lev-Har can create it. That’s what makes him so unique in the custom furniture and closet business. Who else would have the imagination (and inventiveness) to create a Murphy bed for dogs?

Of course Dror’s business is aimed at pleasing people rather than canines. But watching him in his 6,000-squre-foot warehouse is a walk down imagination lane. There are beautifully designed wall units, kitchen cabinets, shelving units, desks and kitchen islands that are unique and artistically designed. That is because Dror has been designing furnishings for kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms and corporate spaces for the past 40 years. His original career path was architecture, but he funneled his artistic passion for depth and breadth into designing and making high styled (or

66 November 2013 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

basic) cabinetry and furniture for homes and offices. Inside the Fancy Interiors office is a tan wood veneer desk that has modern roots and art deco heritage. The circular drawers and angular motion of its stance is pure Dror design brilliance. One thing for sure – you won’t see anything like it anywhere else. That’s because the design inspiration comes from Dror’s head, not a catalogue or trade show. “When I make things I like to think out of the box. I built a kitchen for a family with a dog and they wanted a crate for the dog to match the kitchen. I made them a

dog crate in cherry wood that matched the cabinets and wall unit,” said the Israeli native who originally started Fancy Interiors in Northern New Jersey with his wife Sharon. If you want to know what separates Fancy Interiors from big box retail stores that sell kitchens, bathrooms and cabinetry, Dror has this to say: “We build things to suit your needs that are just right for you and your space. Here you get personal attention from a designer from start until completion. We don’t use subcontractors – we have in-house fabricators and installers.” The computerized equipment that Dror is talking about is a CNC machine that reads documents and automatically fabricates parts and design detail to perfection. “If you don’t paddle up the river you’ll end up going downward. Our advanced computerized software allows us to design a room (or cabinets) in our office and then send a three-dimensional rendering to the client to view on their computer. The CNC machine reads the design plans and cuts the parts with 100 percent accuracy. That way there are no mistakes and everyone is happy,” said Dror. That makes clients such as Adina and Doron of Delray Beach quite happy. “Fancy Interiors designed, fabricated and installed our entertainment center. He created a design that captured exactly what we envisioned for our entertainment center. He built it within the specified time and with no glitches. Dror is a master craftsman and a rare find. We will contin-

ue to use his expertise for our future projects.” There’s also another important piece to this well honed design empire – Sharon Lev-Har. Dror and Sharon have been married for over 40 years and have been partners in Fancy Interiors since its inception. While Dror roams the warehouse (and the cerebral cortex of his brain) Sharon keeps the office running smoothly. Both Sharon and Dror are proud to be on Angie’s List and also members of The National Kitchen & Bath Association and The American Society of Interior Designers. Their use of varied (and attractive) finishes, woods and metals make them a one stop shop for all your in-house design needs. They can design for all sensibilities - modern, traditional, contemporary and antique finishes. All you have to do is ask. For one customer Dror designed a cabinet with a top that lifts up (with the touch of a button) leaving space for a TV. The high gloss veneer cabinet looks like a designed modern cabinet, but its ability to lift off like a space shuttle is pure Dror Design creativity. One thing to note when hiring someone to remodel your bathroom, kitchen or home is to make sure they are insured and responsible. “We have workman’s compensation and offer warrantees on our products. Don’t compare companies based on price. We are a solid woodworking shop with insurance and we are always there for you if there is a problem, or if something gets damaged,” said Dror. Fancy Interiors also specializes in storage solutions for your home or office. They can create home-office spaces, entertainment centers, shelving for your kitchen or the walk-in closet you’ve always dreamed of. And the best part – they do everything locally right here in Delray Beach. The reason for the success of Fab & Chic and the ascent of Elorz’s event planning business - is genetics mixed with desire. “I grew up with a mother who threw wonderful parties where everything was just perfect. I also love the challenge of organizing events and surprising my clients. When you see what people want (or need) you can cater to their needs and surprise them,” said Elorz, who was raised in Spain and has planned events on all continents. Although party and event planning may sound frivolous to some, to Elorz it is serious business. She has two Master’s Degrees - one in Marketing Administration and the other in Hospitality Management. She worked for an American firm in Spain planning events and giving presentations, and was recruited to set up events and marketing ventures for a French company. After cementing her position as a leader in the event planning (and networking) business she started her own firm called Wombat Events. For Elorz, who could charm a snake into domesticity, the gigs keep coming. She planned and executed an introductory flight for a new airline in Spain and wowed the crowd with a celebrity DJ and spectacular social graces 30,000 feet above ground. Elorz was also asked to plan a birthday party in Marbella, Spain for a lucky canine. The dogs came dressed in fur coats and caviar was served to guests and their non-verbal protégés. To some these types of events may sound strange, but not for this veteran party planner who has created events in

France, Spain, Miami and Palm Beach County. Things are going so well for Fab & Chic that they are planning to open an office in Miami as well as Ibiza and Marbella, Spain. “When you hire Fab & Chic our clients can relax and go on with their lives because we take over for them. We also offer clients three different proposals to choose from to meet each person’s needs and budget. The choices are limitless – we can do anything they want,” said Elorz, who works closely with Fab & Chic team consultants Kristen Segarra and Sheila Diaz. “Our strength is our team; we go beyond what is expected.” Fab & Chic plans Dinner parties, Weddings, Birthday celebrations, baptisms, surprise parties, presentations, corporate events and pet parties. Confidentiality agreements are signed and the staff is prohibited from bringing camera phones to events. One groom was so elated after his wedding that he couldn’t help gushing to Elorz. “You were able to create long lasting happy memories for our lives. These cherished memories will last me and my wife a lifetime. I will always cherish them.” Words like this are often heard after Fab & Chic has created an event. The reason is simply that they thrive on the logistics of creating events above and beyond the ordinary. They recently planned a wedding for 750 people in Miami that was filmed for season nine of “Say Yes to the Dress, Princess Weddings.” The bride and groom wanted to honor their British and Caribbean heritages so the culinary choices and design reflected their personal yet distinctive origins. Food was served on all three floors of The Cruz Building in Coconut Grove and a multi-tiered ice sculpture of The Big Ben Clock Tower was created to chill champagne and create a semblance of Britain. “Everything was handled professionally in a timely fashion with expert precision. The wedding was full of glamour, style and perfection.

These women don’t see limitations, they go above and beyond expectations just to please you,” said the Bride. Fab & Chic also added a concierge service with personalized one-on-one service. They can decorate your home for the holidays (or a special event) or arrange for any - or all - of your earthly desires with class and timeliness. “We can help you find a remarkable gift or dress, organize your next trip to Sonoma Valley or get tickets for the concert of your choice. James Gardner was a long way from his home of white sand, sunny skies and palm trees as he walked the villages side-by-side with a tour guide depicting tales of the majestic lions and inhabitants of the land.

It was 1968 and his first journey to Africa from his hometown of Delray Beach. At the time, Gardner landed in Zimbabwe during the Rhodesian Bush War and got a firsthand look at the turmoil brewing in the country. That trip inspired his first book, The Lion Killer, an eye opening tale that follows an African family and the plight of many who live in the African countries, such as Zimbabwe and the Sudan. The protagonist, Rhodesian war hero, Rigby Croxford, is hired by American litigator, Max Turner to rescue his son from Congolese Rebels after a peaceful safari to see the Mountain Gorillas turns into a bloodbath. Croxford is apprehensive about Max’s hidden agenda. The

adventure has more twists than the Zambezi River with danger at every bend. He takes his readers through the visual wreckage of Zimbabwe to the genocide wreaking havoc in the Sudan. You will experience Africa’s cruelty from a front row seat and you will discover the kindness of people who have nothing left but hope, according to the synopsis of the book. Since his first trip, Gardner has made 26 excursions to the land and has penned three novels about his experiences and the extraordinary characters he has met along the way. His other fiction action adventure novels- The Zambezi Vendetta and The Honey Guide of the “Dark Continent Chronicles” trilogy- have also gained much local and national accolades. Even acclaimed author James Patterson has endorsed his books. Gardner was motivated to write ‘The Lion Killer’ to bring attention to what is happening to African countries, including Zimbabwe and the Sudan. “Zimbabwe was once called the bread basket of the Dark Continent and now it’s reduced to a basket case. The unemployment rate is 94%. The annual inflation rate peaked at one billion percent per month until the currency finally collapsed,” says Gardner. Not only did his time in Africa contribute to his writing but also his experiences in South Florida. Gardner was born and raised in Delray Beach, went to first grade at Old School Square

and is well known in the community. Also as a Senior Vice President with Smith Barney for forty years, his intimate knowledge of the national and global economy has played a key role in his books. Gardner, now 70, is also a seaplane pilot, sailor, scuba diver, fisherman, conservationist, world traveler and avid golfer. He continues to go back to Africa and is working on his fourth novel. His screenplay for The Lion Killer came in third place in the LA Screenplay Competition and recently placed in the Top 100 in the Slamdance Competition. He is presently finishing up his screenplay for The Zambezi Vendetta. “I want the readers to get a better understanding of Africa and how important it is to our future. The US will compete against China, and the secret to China’s success is Africa, which is where they get their oil and copper. I’d like the US to take a more active role in helping Africa,” said Gardner. To learn more about James Gardner and his books, visit http://www.jamesgardnernow. blogspot.com/. Dr. Conde is a busy man. His practice, The Conde Center for Chiropractic Neurology is booming. And for good reason.

He helps those with arthritis, sprains, disc injuries, back and neck pain, brain injuries, neurological conditions, Parkinson’s disease, Autism and other conditions. He also has the will and sincere desire to help others. “My greatest passion is being able to transition human beings from pain and neurological dysfunction to wellness.” That is the reason that The Conde Center has recently expanded their office from 2,400-square-feet to 4,300-square-feet. “In addition we upgraded the clinic to include the most current therapeutic and diagnostic equipment such as IMASIGHT digital x-rays. This allows us to diagnose with more certainty anything from arthritis to fractures to joint dysfunction. We purchased the most researched medical equipment available in the industry,” said the Board Certified Chi-

ropractic Neurologist (there are only 600 in the country). Part of this new wave of tools for diagnosis and healing are Class IV Cold Lasers. Dr. Conde recently purchased a second laser for the clinic, which he says is the most powerful on the market. “It is able to accelerate tissue repair by 10 times and is used for treating tendonitis, arthritis, sprains, disc injury and fractures. This laser is very versatile and can help heal conditions

such as herniated discs, skin lesions and fractures.” The Conde Center has also implemented a therapy known as motor timing. “It utilizes one of the most researched neurological treatment programs available called Interactive Metronome. This therapy impacts cognitive speed, efficiency and motor function and is used in the rehabilitation of neurological injuries like MS, Parkinson’s, strokes and brain injuries,” said Dr. Conde. And so far the results are startling. “My 17-year-old son suffered a traumatic brain injury last year and our family was devastated, terrified and frustrated with the lack of care for him in the area. Since coming to Dr. Conde’s this February our hopelessness has been transformed into joy. Last year at this time, our son was wheelchair bound, but today he walks with a walker. Dr. Conde and his team transformed our son with cutting-edge neurological techniques, advanced physical therapy and chiropractic care,” said Gina. Testimonials like Gina’s are what makes Dr. Conde strive for the best treatments available. He has added Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy for neurological conditions of the brain. “This treatment promotes healing in neurological tissues secondary to higher concentration of oxygen.” Dr. Conde is also focusing on orthopedic conditions such as back and neck pain, numbness, tingling, sciatica, shoulder and knee problems. His use of therapeutic laser light penetrates deeply into the body and stimulates damaged cells to start producing ATP. Procedures such as this one are known to stimulate the immune system and nerve function, develop collagen and muscle tissue, reduce inflammation and help generate new healthy cells and tissue. Laura A. Fenoglio knows the benefit of these treatments first hand. “When I went to see Dr. Conde two months ago I was the most miserable human being. I suffered from acute debilitating arthritis in my right hip. But, your dedication to your patients and your expertise has changed my life. Thanks to you and your staff I feel ready to join ‘Dancing With The Stars’- what a joy!” Gina also had accolades to bestow on everyone at The Conde Center as well. “Everyone at The Conde Center is helpful, empathetic and emulates a work ethic that is second to none. My son has a long road of recovery ahead, but we are confident that he is in good hands.”

Dr. Conde is also using brain-based enrichment software, advanced physical therapy exercises and mirror therapy exercises to help those with brain injuries. “Functional neurology uses rehabilitative mechanisms in place of medication or in conjunction with it. SPODAK DENTAL GROUP Unveils Its Crown Jewel By Diane feen

The word biophilic has special meaning to Dr. Craig Spodak. It’s one of the reasons he moved his dental practice a few miles east and the impetus for a new realm of dentistry.

“I have built what I call a dental hospital. It is the only one of its kind specializing in dentistry. Our new office is multi-specialty with all different phases of dental treatment all done under one roof.” When it comes to roofs this new facility covers a lot of ground. The 13,000-squarefoot building has 18 dental operatories, a full dental laboratory, lecture hall, gathering spaces, an eating facility and a waiting area. On a more holistic note the new Spodak Dental facility has many of Mother Nature’s finest treasures – lush landscaped gardens, birds and butterflies, lots of natural light and enough windows to meld the exterior and interior into one grand nature-fest. “When exposed to nature patients heal faster, doctors make fewer errors and people feel bet-

ter all around. In some countries (like Germany) it is illegal to build a building without a lot of windows and a sky light – it’s that important,” said Dr. Spodak. To make this ambitious project a reality Dr. Spodak hired Michael Singer Studio. If you know Michael Singer then you know he has an illustrious history of creating history and art at the same time. “Dr. Craig’s goals - and his building - set a milestone for dental practices nationwide with the start of a new environmental consciousness for Delray Beach. It has been fruitful design collaboration for my Studio to work with him,” said Singer. Also in the design mix is renowned landscape architect Connie Roy- Fisher. It is Fisher who made sure that the lush gardens

and blooming trees were compatible with the environment, the building and the ideals of its namesake. “Dr. Spodak has recognized what so many healthcare professionals across the country are realizing - that environment can improve health outcomes. I am so pleased that the project has developed so beautifully and will be a living example of how healthy environments create healthy restorative settings for people,” said the President of Studio Sprout. According to Roy- Fisher there will be approximately 100 different trees dispersed around the property. Some have names like Live Oak Pines, Cypress trees and Blolly, while other dimensions to this tropical paradise are Heliconia’s, Ginger plants, Salidas and Simpson Stoppers.

The new Spodak Building is energy efficient (to the max) and has LED parking lot lighting. Their primary design goal was to create abundant natural light and an indoor space that melds inner and outer wellbeing (in both a physical and mental sense). This was accomplished with large transparent walls and Solatubes to provide natural light to the inside. “Each operatory has floorto-ceiling glass and three areas have floorto-ceiling glass that wraps to the roof. The goal of transparency drives the modern and minimalist architectural design with an emphasis on light, shadow and lush vegetation,” adds Singer. Because the building was created to harmonize with nature and its inhabitants, Singer and his team have combined sustainability and sensibility. “During a rain storm the southern half of the building sheds water off the roof through precast concrete outfalls and then into a vegetated bioswale landscape. The north half of the building collects rainwater into two cisterns for supplemental irrigation for the surrounding landscape,” Singer adds. Now that this new space has been deemed both architecturally and environmentally sound, Dr. Spodak (and his team) will conduct seminars for dentists from all over the country. The new structure will also be a regional showcase for the Midmark Corporation, a manufacturer of medical and dental equipment. “I formed a partnership with Midmark, and our new offices will be a living breathing showroom for them to show dentists from around the country,” said Dr. Spodak, who has also been traveling around the country speaking on dental procedures. Other news inside the glass walls (and picturesque landscape) is that Spodak Dental Group has hired a Harvard-trained prosthodontist and two additional general dentists. A new machine was also purchased that will make crowns or veneers in just one hour, eliminating the need for a temporary tooth. “This machine has special 3-D CAD/ CAM optical scanning so we can fix a broken tooth or put on a veneer for less money and in much less time,” said Dr. Spodak. The Spodak Dental Group also offers Sleep Dentistry that has proven helpful for those who are afraid of the dentist, or those with disabilities. “We have patients with developmental disorders such as autism and handicaps that can’t sit still during dental procedures. To make this a reality we have an anesthesiologist on staff.” Aside from the pocket gardens of lush na-

tive and tropical vegetation, this new space makes it possible for Spodak Dental Group to be a provider for most dental PPO Insurance Plans. “In the past we could not do that, but now that we have a larger facility we can accommodate more patients.” There have been a lot of studies about the environments ability to affect human behavior and mood. And most of it is positive when it comes to light and vegetation. That is the reason that Dr. Spodak has been relentless in completing his dream project. The space is large and the expanse of its effect will be

far reaching – and that makes Dr. Craig very happy. “I requested an environmentally sound holistic building and landscape that will comfort patients, inspire staff and create an open and transparent facility.” And now that his dream has come to fruition Dr. Craig invites everyone to experience this dental treasure just west of the highway on Atlantic Avenue. Although Danna was born and raised in Connecticut she headed to Boulder, Colorado after a two year stint as a reporter for the Darien Times. With her move Westward came a desire to indulge in the healthy lifestyle that has made Colorado a Mecca for healthy living. “When I lived in Colorado I fell in love with indoor cycling at a small independent gym in downtown Boulder. The gym’s intimate setting appealed to me because it motivated and inspired cyclists in a way other large gyms could not,” said the owner of PūrCycle in downtown Delray Beach. With her motivation in tact Danna moved to South Florida and began writing for a local paper as a food blogger. Although her culinary desires were fulfilled her physical ones were not. “I wanted to offer a ‘pure’ approach to total health and wellness in a boutique studio setting. That’s why I created Delray’s first fully-dedicated indoor cycling studio that combines the principles of heart rate training with energizing music,” said Danna, who designed the lounge area with a modern yet nurturing eclectic design sense. She also chose what she calls an elite team of instructors that deliver a revolutionary cardiovascular workout to help students reach a new level of group fitness intensity. This hard-core yet rewarding workout is just

what PūrCycle student Brooke Raymond was looking for. “I love the camaraderie and the instructors here. I am training for an upcoming Triathlon and I am here at 5:30 am three days a week to spin. It gives me a great sense of accomplishment.” It is a rather exhilarating accomplishment to cycle for 60 minutes with a group of others racing against time (and toward contentment). According to Danna spinning can burn calories, tone muscle and help riders increase cardiovascular strength and endurance. Chances are if you take spinning classes you will have better endurance (and perhaps success) on the golf course or tennis court. Add that to the surround sound of popular music and you have a group of instructors and cycling enthusiasts peddling to perfect their lives. Michele Bazargan is one of them. “I really like the energy, environment and the instructors at PūrCycle. Cycling there is awesome, invigorating and uplifting – I have been going there since they opened.” One reason indoor cyclers enjoy PūrCycle so much is their equipment. Their Star Trac® bikes - called The Blade - are known as the ultimate standard for indoor cycling. The studio also offers a cutting-edge heart rate monitoring system called Performance IQ, which shows each person’s performance on a screen overhead. Cyclists also receive an email after class that outlines their workout stats with calories burned and heart rate. The instructors are another reason for PūrCycle’s success. Each has an extensive fitness and cycling background, and collectively they have a passion for PūrCycle and its benefits on the body. “As an elite instructor I appreciate the bikes, the cleanliness, towel service, sound system and the energy Nicole has cre-

ated. The instructors she employs are excellent, and the small town feel one receives lets you know you’re not just a butt in a seat,” said Becca Tebon, Holistic Health Coach, Wellness Strategist and instructor at PūrCycle. Whether you are a seasoned rider - or a newcomer - PūrCycle has a class to fit your needs. On the first and third Sunday of each month are free beginners workshops that educate students on how to ride the bikes and the benefits of indoor cycling. Danna also stresses that every level of competency is welcome. “No matter where you are in your fitness journey, we strive to make your experience at PūrCycle the best part of your day and help you become the best you can be.” As a means to this end Danna has added a juice bar with Raw Organic Cold Pressed Juices and healthy vegan snacks. And, if you need to slow down and reboot (or get psyched up) you can relax in their cozy 800-square-foot

lounge. Its intimate grasp is sealed with a high gloss wooden bar made of recycled box crates, modern Adrian Pearsall couch and retro fiberglass stools. There’s also a flat screen TV in the lounge, free Wi-Fi and if you’re in the Friday 4:30 Spin Class you’ll receive a free drink coupon to use at DaDa, Tryst or Delux (from 5 to 11pm). They also have corporate team building events, charity rides and early morning and evening classes. “We are committed to providing the PūrCycle community of riders an invigorating, fun and safe way to improve their overall lifestyle, health and wellness.” PūrCycle 101 SE 2nd Avenue Delray beach 561-901-SPIN (7746) info@pur-cycle.Com www.pur-cycle.Com

ACUPUNCTURE ZEN Stepping Into Calm By Diane feen

There’s a feeling you get when you enter Acupuncture Zen. It’s healing, restorative and calming – and it’s not just a feeling, it’s a reality. Some might say it’s the black and white interior or the celebrity lined wall of testimonials – but it’s not that.

80 November 2013 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Dr. Willcox of Acupuncture Zen, Sports Medicine Acupuncturist for the NHL Florida Panthers

It’s the healing energy that is palpable in this den of Zen. One that can almost make you wish you could inhale it as if it were chicken soup for the soul, so to speak. And for most people who enter, it’s just that. “The Acupuncture Zen office was one of the quietest, peaceful places I’ve ever visited. I was able to relax very easily and it was the Best Acupuncture experience I have ever had. I have never felt this relaxed,” said Jenny of Delray Beach. A lot of people feel like that. And it’s no coincidence that the master of healing ceremonies – Dr. Tony Willcox - has a lot to do with the collective calm that permeates the air in suite 11 at 900 E Atlantic Ave. Dr. Willcox has been studying the healing arts for many years and continues to seek out modalities and treatments to heal whatever may ail you. “My goal has always been the drive to inner peace and contentment. And I have found that it helps my patients as well.” You could say that. Just last month Mark from Virginia walked by Acupuncture Zen and casually dropped in to check it out. It turned out to be a fortuitous journey. “All of my life I have wanted the feeling of inner peace and Dr. Tony was able to bring that to me. During my healing session all of the negative emotional and physical pain that I carried around for so long just left my body. My mother also just passed away and this helped me deal with everything that comes with loss. Dr. Tony is a gift from God.” Abel Trujillo shouts his praises from the rafters as well – but from more of a physical plane. “Now that I get acupuncture treatments

Facial Rejuvenation with this gentle and relaxing acupuncture procedure to reduce stress and promotes enhanced feelings of well-being including increased collagen production

from Dr. Tony I sleep better, have less pain and recover from a fight faster,” said the UFC lightweight fighter. Although Dr. Tony has many healing modalities - Acupuncture, Cupping, Low Level Laser Therapy, Neuro-Muscular Therapy, Reflexology and more – his newest healing tool is a Vogel Crystal Bed. This gem filled system, made especially for Dr. Tony, has been known to help relax, heal and restore harmony to the body and mind. To some this mode of healing takes a leap of faith – and a new perspective on holistic healing – but the results are astounding. “I was having serious stomach problems and anxiety, but after spending time on the Crystal Bed I felt much better. I left calmer and more aligned with a feeling of health and well being. It was a miracle,” said Susan of Boca Raton. It’s no secret that alternative medicine and healing techniques such as Acupuncture have penetrated mainstream America. What was thought of as “far out” or weird just 10 years ago is now sanctioned by the medical community. According to a national health survey by the CDC National Center for Health Statistics, Americans spent $33.9 billion of their own money on alternative medicine. Not only that – The Chinese people have used Acupuncture for the past 3,000 years – and it has been a major source of medicine for the 1.5 billion people there. That is why Dr. Tony got a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Science and a Masters Degree in Oriental Medicine from the Atlantic Institute of Oriental Medicine in Fort Lauderdale. He has a Double Board Certification in Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine and received the “Academic Excellence Award.” Dr. Tony was certified at Yueyang and Shuguang Hospitals in China and has a Masters of Acupuncture from the Shanghai University

of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Dr. Tony has also been the Official Acupuncturist for the NHL Florida Panthers Team for the past six years. All this experience and training has qualified Dr. Tony to be at the top of his game. But don’t take our word for it – listen to the words of those who know him. “Dr. Willcox has demonstrated superb clinical skills and has consistently provided the highest level of medical care to my patients. He is compassionate and effective when caring for my patients with a wide variety of conditions,” said Kevin Cairns, M.D. and Clinical Assistant Professor Nova Southeastern University. To Greg Fishman, whose office is near Acupuncture Zen, Dr. Tony is the Go-To person for healing. “I just need Dr. Tony. He has helped me with anxiety and is helping me to stop smoking. He is a good guy.” Acupuncture is also great for increasing collagen and giving the skin a youthful glow. It also

helps with Insomnia, Infertility, Menstrual and Menopausal disorders, back pain, headache relief, anxiety and many more conditions. If you find yourself steeped in anxiety (and who doesn’t) you can try cupping. “It brings blood to the affected area and helps with shoulder, back and neck pain. It’s also good for the immune system as well as breathing problems,” said Dr. Tony. It takes a special person to care for so many people. And Dr. Tony is one of them. His patients can’t say enough good things about him and the results of his treatments speak for themselves. Family Fun Days are just one small part of the holiday festivities surrounding the 100-Foot Christmas Tree this year. The celebration begins on November 27 with the lighting of a giant menorah on the grounds of the Delray Beach Center for the Arts as part of the Hanukkah celebration. December kicks off with the annual lighting of the 100-foot Christmas Tree, scheduled for December 5. The event, which features Santa arriving by helicopter and a variety of entertainment, is expected to draw more than 40,000 visitors. Activities at the tree, including an ice skating rink designed for Florida, a carousel and the opportunity to meet Santa, will continue through the month of December. An annual favorite, Breakfast will Santa, will be held at the Delray Beach Marriott on December 14, with seatings at 9am, 10am, 11am and noon. The Delray Beach Holiday Parade will take place that evening on Atlantic Avenue. The holiday festivities conclude with the First Night celebration, an alcohol-free New Year’s Eve celebration for the whole family. This year, Immelman says, First Night will have a fresher look and will include additional activities for adults. Other outstanding events taking place in Delray Beach during the holidays include free Friday night concerts at the Delray Center for the Arts beginning at 7pm, Home for the Holidays on Ice at the Crest Theater from December 20 through December 22, and the Howard Alan Craft Show, December 28 and 29. “With so much going on, Delray Beach really is the place to be this holiday season,” Immelman said. If home is where the heart is then it’s a good idea to make it a happy one. That’s what scientists have been saying all along – and now people are listening.

But to some the idea of furniture shopping is akin to trying to find the perfect bathing suit. Get it? When it comes to furniture and furnishings, both Bernard and Stephanie Molyneux get it. They understand that a home or condo is a sanctuary that should be dressed with the same precision as its owners. That’s why people are flocking to their 40,000-square-foot warehouse showroom in Deerfield Beach and their charming coastal minded store in Delray Beach. It is there that you can meander around looking at European reproduction style furniture (in real wood), unique lamps, chandeliers, accessories, upholstered and slip covered chairs, sofas, and other intriguing pieces that seem as if they were designed by an artisan.

86 November 2013 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

And many of them are. Just look at the collection of Andrew Martin tables, sofas, wallpaper and coffee tables. They are sophisticated, practical and eclectic with a sense of style only an artist could create. The Heratio Coffee Table is one example of stark lines that balance brilliance with metal workmanship. On a softer note is a velvet tweed sofa with rolled arms and chrome nail-heads called “The Hill.” Many of the cabinets, wall units and armoires take their cues from European aristocracy and are made of assorted wood finishes. There are dark walnut finishes, sand blasted, distressed or lightly painted with contrast color detail. Some are Coastal in theme and others are more elegant and regal. But one thing for sure you won’t see these pieces in big box retailers or chain stores. And

Accessory lines like nowhere else

you also won’t see real wood at those stores. Instead you’ll see furniture in cardboard-like melamine. But not at ACP Interiors. That’s why customers like Lynn Brody don’t look much farther than ACP Interiors when furnishing her home. “What do I buy at ACP Interiors; the question is ‘what don’t I buy there.’ They have such interesting pieces with a European flair. I bought bar stools there, coffee tables, hostess chairs and linen slip covered pieces. Their furniture is of high quality and unique, and the prices are very good for what you get.” The reason for their success is that Bernard and his wife Stephanie know that style

is personal. They know that some people want antique reproductions, others want a more industrial style and still others like the lightness of being of coastal style pieces. Both stores also have decorating consultants available to help you with difficult decisions or design dilemmas. The furniture can also be custom made to meet your needs and specific décor demands. If you want a certain size, color or wood finish, it’s yours for the asking. That’s the thing about ACP Interiors that makes everyone so happy – it’s a family business. Stephanie and Bernard do all the buying and are hands-on with their customer’s. There is also a swatch room so you can pick out the color or fabric you want for upholstered furniture. And, if you need linens you can find them there as well (Macy’s be gone). And much like a clothing store ACP Interiors gets weekly shipments of new furniture and accessories. They’ve also melded the masculine and feminine side of home furnishings into one big pot. There are chrome and metal coffee tables and end tables with rivets, grommets and industrial accents. In their Delray showroom they have saddle leather chairs and sofas with a distinctive Ralph Lauren flair. Yet they also have coffee table books and silver plated mother of pearl serving sets most likely to appeal to the woman of the house. ACP also has vanities that defy convention. Some are in white washed or sand blasted tones with soap stone marble tops and others are darker in nature and nurture. The great thing about these vanities is that they are classy and designer inspired. They also have wonderful gift items like soaps, candles, platters, serving trays, serv-

ing utensils and antique style bird cages. If you need something for your walls ACP Interiors has an eclectic and modern collection of paintings and wall art. Each are as unique as the shopper themselves. Some are retro style and others are modern and quirky. One size does not fit all at ACP Interiors. Instead the individual is celebrated and serenaded with a distinctive style to meet their taste level. That’s what makes Darcie Main such a fan of ACP. “I bought my whole house at ACP in Delray. I bought a sofa, bookcases, coffee tables, lamps, a bedroom set and linens. I love the Bella Notte bedding collection – it’s elegant. Come join us in our inviting showrooms!

Everything in the store is a one-of-a-kind piece - I even bought chandeliers and art work there,” said Main. Bernard is also one of the largest sellers (and buyers) of Louis Vuitton trunks and hard cases in the US. They also do restoration and maintenance if you have one that needs some TLC. “Each of our stores maintains an outstanding inventory of quality home furnishings to fit your lifestyle. Come in and take a look at our furniture and accessories – they’re from all over the world,” said Stephanie. special feature ║ DR. CHRISTOPHER SENGER

A Man On The Move

DR. CHRISTOPHER SENGER By Diane Feen photos by melissa korman

{

Dr. Christopher Senger is bringing back an ancient tradition. As a doctor of Internal, anti-aging and regenerative medicine, Dr. Senger is going where not many doctors have gone since the 50’s – The Home.

Yes, you heard that right, Dr. Senger is making house calls. The Board Certified Physician, who hails from Canada, has decided that personal care is his specialty. “I was treating people in their homes for internal medicine and it blossomed into treating people privately. I am now focused on helping people with weight loss, hormone replacement and aesthetics with an integrative approach.” The advantage of this personalized service is obvious. Dr. Senger spends at least 30 to 40 minutes with each patient and performs a full consultation and viable comprehensive plan for each person. He also examines the patient’s current medications, potential hormonal deficiencies, vitamin deficiencies and other roadblocks to optimum health. But this road less traveled can reveal some startling results. “If you have a blood test for a suspected hormonal or vitamin deficiency you might be in the normal range but not the optimal range. Sometimes a person will feel better if their levels are optimized. It’s also not just about adding hormones without the essential vitamins, supplements and lifestyle changes,” said Dr. Senger, whose practice is called NuU MD (pronounced new you). Dr. Senger is quite a sensation with those who know him. His genial manner and caring countenance have garnered him followers from Ft. Lauderdale to Palm Beach. Some people have tried dieting for years and have not had success, while others see him for dermal fillers, Botox or hormone replacement. Whatever the reason clients couldn’t be happier. “I have gone back to Dr. Senger many

times since I was referred to him through a friend. The results are great. I have been to many dermatologists and plastic surgeons in the past and I am extremely happy with my results with him,” said Michelle McCauley. Dr. Senger is quick to note that many doctors are doing aesthetics, such as Botox and fillers, but not everyone is experienced. “This

Dr. Senger at in home consultation with client Michelle

type of work is an art form. If the lips are too big or the face is inflated it doesn’t look right. You need to do aesthetics properly so it is not obvious and the face looks natural.” Dr. Senger performs a thorough examination prior to prescribing medications for weight loss and has state-of-the-art mobile electronic medical records. All procedures and programs are documented and carefully discussed with patients before and after treatment. In addition to prescribing medications for weight loss, Dr. Senger provides hCG and Lipotropic injections (B12+MIC) from accredited compounding pharmacies (only available by prescription). “I take a comprehensive look at a patient’s current medications, behavioral patterns and disease processes that may be contributing to weight gain. The hCG diet plan can help patients lose an average of 10-15 pounds per month.” According to Dr. Senger, lipotropics play an important role in the body’s metabolism of fat. “These lipotropic compounds enhance liver function and increase the flow of fats and bile from the liver and gallbladder assisting in significant weight loss.” If you’re looking to take off a few years from your face Dr. Senger can help. Just ask his clients. “I have had three Botox parties at my home with Dr. Senger and everyone has been more than satisfied with their results. The results I had were much better than the plastic surgeon I was using before. I can’t recommend Dr. Senger enough,” said Karina Costa. Tracey Davis feels the same way. “All I can say is wow! I have been getting Botox and fillers for over five years and these are the best results I have ever had

- at the best price. I have recommended Dr. Senger to all my friends.” Dr. Senger is also helping men with Andropause, which is male menopause or low testosterone. He offers them “a complete laboratory analysis, consultation and customized medication plan to help restore them to their prior youthfulness and vigor.” There are other reasons for wanting a doctor to come to your house. “Some people want privacy and the comfort of their home, as well as personalized oneon-one contact with a doctor. They also don’t have to go through an assistant they can contact me directly. I am taking concierge medicine one step further,” said Dr. Senger. Dr. Senger is available for appointments during the week, on weekends and in the evening. His prices are competitive and group prices are available. “I only use the highest quality products from top-of-the-line brand names. All weight loss and aesthetic products I use are 100 percent authentic and fresh.” While some people may not remember the good old days when doctors made house calls, the trend is coming back swiftly and subtly. And if you listen to the accolades of those who know him, you will understand why Dr. Senger’s personal (and private) practice is booming: “My Favorite doctor ever! Amazing, compassionate doctor! Intelligent caring doctor!” The goal of Dr. Senger’s practice is to help patient’s look and feel younger and healthier. And who doesn’t want that? VINCENT P. NOLAN Jr. Rhythm And Reason For The City

{

By Diane Feen

There are a lot of people who want to talk to Vincent Nolan. Some are business owners; others are city officials and real estate developers. They come to him – not for praise – but for help in becoming part of the infrastructure of Delray Beach.

And that job suits Nolan just fine. As the Economic Development Director for the City of Delray Beach and the Delray Beach Community Redevelopment Agency, Nolan is a pivotal person when it comes to helping local businesses survive and thrive. Nolan has been in his current position for the past two years and has already made his mark on the village by the sea. He was instrumental in launching the redevelopment of the Congress Avenue Corridor and the IWA property (formerly Office Depot). Part of this ambitious plan is to bring new businesses to the area, expand existing ones, create new jobs and increase the demand for real estate in that area. He has also developed incentives to bring new businesses to Delray Beach. He lured a law firm from Boca Raton (Aldridge Connors) as well as a Cloud Computing Company (C3). He was also part of the team that made sure that Levenger (the cerebral retail paradise) stayed in Delray Beach on Congress Avenue. If you wonder how he has managed to accomplish so much in two years it’s because Nolan is the consummate economic developer. He is a Certified Economic Developer (CEcD), a designation given by the International Economic Development Council in Washington DC. This coveted title is given to those who master skills in economic development with public officials, business leaders and community members. The job is to create and retain high-quality jobs, establish economic vibrancy and improve quality of life for the people. This job title is exactly

November 2013 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

what has made Nolan’s career path so vertical. “I am a problem solver. I work with issues over permits, signage codes and help business owners get things done. I like to find ways to say ‘yes’ when others may have said ‘no.’” Public Service was in Nolan’s genetic make-up from birth. His father Vincent was in politics and his mother Mary helped voters register to cast their vote. Nolan was President of the City Council of Danbury Connecticut and a legislative assistant to Senator Len Fasano in the Connecticut General Assembly. His economic history is equally as impressive. He was the Economic Development Supervisor for the Town of New Milford, Connecticut for six years. In that job capacity Nolan worked with main street merchants, manufacturers, and bigbox retailers to facilitate permitting and land development approvals. He also strategized on how to increase market share and improve access to customers. There is little in Nolan’s resume that doesn’t have the word director, adviser or economic developer in front of it. He was Director and VicePresident of the Connecticut Economic Developers Association and the Executive Director of the Meriden Business & Learning Center in Meriden, Connecticut. All of this previous experience makes one wonder – is Nolan a policy wonk or a people person. “I enjoy working with people of all levels. I am often the go between with city and government officials, residents of communities and the business community. I like solving problems and creating

City Person Vin Nolen stands in front of the old Delray beach libarary which soon will be turned into the Muvico project lead by Vin Nolen.

opportunities for people. I am a people person.” If you talk to those who have worked with him, you will find out that Nolan is more than a people person or an economic smarty. “Vin’s poise and professionalism are engaging and have allowed him to relate well with business leaders, elected officials and city staff. This is important because his work involves weaving through the different leadership layers in our community. His well rounded knowledge inspires credibility and trust in all of us who communicate with him. He is passionate about his job, and he relates well with the community in general,” said Francisco Perez-Azua, Architect and Real Estate Consultant in Delray Beach. On a more personal note Nolan (whose nickname is Vin) loves going to beach, has three children, two grandchildren and a fiancé named Rochelle Kingsley. He also enjoys local theater, Delray Beach restaurants and nightlife, and has been known to belt out a great Karaoke song. “We relocated for career and lifestyle. We found that Delray Beach is the perfect place, it has everything we could ever look for.” It seems that this savvy yet seasoned economic developer has his eye on the prize to keep Delray Beach at the top of its game. His academic credentials and understanding of government have garnered him accolades and friends as well. “Vin Nolan brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Delray Beach. I have a great deal of respect for him, I’m learning a lot from him, and he’s a pleasure to work with,” said Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Karen Granger.

dining ║ Thanksgiving... TENDER JUICY TURKEY

By Yvette Roulette

A Simple Traditional Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays of the year. It encompasses for most, three All American “Fs”: Food, Football, and Family. Some Thanksgiving dinners are fancy and elaborate, with recipes straight out of Bon Appétit, while others are more simple and basic with family recipes that have been passed down through generations. This Thanksgiving I will share some of my favorite, crowd pleasing, fool proof, traditional recipes. 110 November 2013 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Tender Juicy Turkey

1 15 lb turkey - giblets and neck removed 2 Tbsp each of dried parsley, ground dried rosemary, rubbed dried sage, dried thyme leaves 1 Tbsp lemon pepper 1 Tbsp salt 2 Stalks of celery, chopped 1 Orange cut in wedges 1 Onion chopped 1 Carrot chopped 1 14.5 oz Can of chicken broth 1 Bottle of champagne (or ginger ale, or coke) *If prepared ahead, marinate the turkey in the fridge the day before for even more tender juiciness! 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a turkey roster with long sheets of foil that will be long enough to wrap the turkey loosely.

2. Stir together the parsley, rosemary, sage, thyme, lemon pepper and salt in a small bowl. Rub the mixture in the cavity of the turkey and over and under the skin of the turkey. Stuff the turkey with the celery, onion, orange, and carrot. Truss, if desired and place the turkey in the roasting pan. Pour the broth and champagne over the turkey and make sure to get some champagne in the cavity. Bring the foil over the top of the turkey and seal. Keep the foil from touching the skin of the breast or legs. 3. Bake the turkey for 2 1/2 - 3 hours until juices run clear. Uncover and continue to bake until skin turns golden brown (about 30 minutes to 1 hour more). When done, remove turkey from oven and cover with aluminum foil - let the turkey rest at least 15 minutes before carving.

Creamy Mashed Potatoes

Serves 12 7 Cups of chicken broth ( I use Swanson) 10 Large potatoes peeled and cut into 1 inch pieces 1 Cup of sour cream 1 Stick of butter softened Salt and Pepper to taste Heat broth and potatoes over high heat to a boil. Reduce heat to medium. Cover and cook until potatoes are tender. Drain, reserving broth. *Mash potatoes with 1/4 cup of broth, butter, sour cream, salt and pepper. Add additional broth slowly until desired consistency. *I whip my potatoes with a mixer. It makes for fluffier potatoes and no lumps!

Mac & Cheese Cups

Serves 12 8 oz Uncooked elbow macaroni 2 Cups shred cheddar cheese 1/2 Cup grated parmesan cheese 3 Cups of milk 1/4 Cup of butter & 2 tbsp of butter 2 1/2 Tbsp of flour 2 Tbsp of bread crumbs Cook elbow macaroni according to package. In a saucepan melt 1/4 cup of butter over medium heat. Slowly stir in flour. Slowly add milk stirring constantly. Stir in cheeses and cook over low heat until cheese is melted. Combine cheese and macaroni until well blended. Spoon mac & cheese into lightly greased cupcake pan. Melt 2 tbsp of butter over medium heat, add breadcrumbs and brown. Sprinkle over each cup. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

Easy Candied Yams Serves 12 2 29oz Cans of yams 1/2 Cup butter cut into pieces 1 Cup brown sugar 3 Cups of mini marshmallows

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place sweet potatoes in a baking dish. Place butter pieces evenly over sweet potatoes. Sprinkle with brown sugar. Top with mini marshmallows. Bake for 25 minutes or until marshmallows are toasted and melted.

Cranberry Nut Stuffing Serves 12 12 Oz package of cranberries 1 Lb sausage 6 Cups of bread cubes 1 Cup seasoned dried bread crumbs 1 Medium onion chopped 1 Clove of garlic chopped 1 Tsp chopped fresh parsley 1/2 Tsp chopped fresh oregano 1/2 Tsp chopped fresh sage 1 Pinch fresh tyme 1/3 Tsp celery seed 1/4 Tsp ground ginger 1/2 Tsp salt 1/3 Tsp black pepper 2 Cups chicken broth 1/2 Cup chopped walnuts 1/2 Cup chopped orange with skin on

Place cranberries in medium saucepan with enough water to cover and bring to a boil. cook until skins pop. Drain and cool. In a skillet, cook sausage over medium heat until evenly brown. Drain and cool. In a baking dish mix all ingredients escept chicken broth well. Stir in chicken broth slowly until desired consistency. Bake at 350 for 25 minutes until surface is lightly brown and crispy.

Green Bean Casserole

Serves 12 2 (10.75 oz) Cans of Condensed Cream of Mushroom Soup 1 Cup of milk 2 Tsp of Soy sauce 1/4 Tsp ground black pepper 8 Cups cooked cut green beans 2 2/3 Cups french fried onions Stir soup, milk, pepper, soy sauce and 1 1/3 cups of onions in a casserole dish. ARTS ║ the artists of pineapple grove

Pineapple Grove is booming. The Grove is now a bona fide Arts District with a new infusion of galleries on Northeast Second Avenue and an emerging colony of artists in Artists Alley. This series will introduce you to some of the artists that live and work in the Pineapple Grove Arts District.

Maggie Milstead and The Framery Use Creative Talents to Help Artists’ Work Stand Out By Stephanie IMMELMAN If you’ve been to art shows and galleries in Delray Beach lately, chances are you’ve seen Maggie Walker Milstead’s artwork – but just didn’t know it. She didn’t take the artistic photographs, paint the canvas or even pick up a pencil or a brush. Instead Maggie’s artistic talents are showcased in the frames surrounding many of the paintings, drawings and etchings that you’ll find in galleries throughout Delray Beach’s Pineapple Grove Arts District and in Artists Alley. “Framing is definitely an art,” says Maggie who is often the framer of choice for local artists who understand the importance of having just the right frame. A certified picture framer, Maggie is also often chosen by homeowners and art collectors who tap into her experience at constructing a frame that will make the art on their walls stand out. “The frame is essential to the overall impression,” she says. “It can make or break it.” The owner of The Framery, a business focused on custom framing and professional

hanging and design, Maggie began her career more than three decades ago and has framed Picasso and Renoir etchings that have hung in the Boca Raton Museum of Art, as well as the Flagler Museum in West Palm Beach. Maggie has loved art since she was young, studying art history and visiting museums to see outstanding works. “I was always drawn to art,” she said. “I’ve always enjoyed it but I don’t have the talent to express it.” Now, she’s very much a part of the artwork, using her skills to help other artists show off theirs. “People display their creative art in different ways,” she said. “Custom framing is a very hands-on way I can express my creativity and artistic talent.” While an artist needs a good eye to recreate an important scene or to see a bowl of fruit in just the right light, Maggie needs an artist’s eye to choose the right frame for a painting, one that won’t overpower or detract from a piece but will, instead, enhance it. “Choosing the right material is critical,” she says. ‘I can’t explain it but after 33 years, I just know what will work.” Once the materials are selected, Maggie of-

Maggie Milstead

ten hand finished her own locally milled mahogany or basswood. “I love working with hardwoods and veneers,” she said. “Most molding is made with very little real wood any more.” Of course, she also works with several other materials to enhance the artwork. As she strolls through a local gallery and points to her work, Maggie explains that her philosophy is to keep the frames and mats effective and archival, yet simple. “I prefer a less-is-more approach,” she said. For more than 15 years, Maggie has been the framer for Cacace Fine Art, framing all of the pieces created by well-known local artist Vincent Cacace, and most works of artist James Kerr that is on display in the gallery. The chance to express her creativity and take on new challenges, she says, continues to feed her passion for what she does. “Every time a new piece comes in, it’s a whole new challenge to make that piece look fabulous,” she says. “And I’m good at that.” The Framery Inside Cacace Fine Art Artists Alley in Pineapple Grove 561-716-7709 - magframer@aol.com

Is my Veterinarian telling me the truth?

I

was just at the vet and they told me I needed this special food for my pet’s health challenges but when I compared the ingredient label to my current, mass marketed pet food it contains the very same ingredients. Now I am very confused. I was told by a holistic practitioner that if I can’t buy the ingredients in the supermarket, then it’s not food. I can’t buy any of these ingredients in any market that I shop at including my local green market. I feel violated! What is this “special” food that they are selling me and will it truly make my pet healthier? Is there a study out there that proves commercial pet foods can make any pet healthier? They talk about a balanced diet but how can a single food ever serve the nutritional requirements of every animal with the diversity of activity and interaction as individual pet owners have? If one person walks their dog, another jogs with theirs, and still another just lets them out in the yard...do these pets have the same nutritional needs? Does that bag of over-processed food really provide

the metabolic energy for each individual pet’s needs? Veterinarians are taught to be Doctors of Medicine. They are not experts of health and well-being. Each day, they are asked to provide advice in areas such as health but have not been taught the proper expertise. If you need medicine, yes, they should definitely advise you in both the advantages and the adverse side effects, but do they truly understand health? Ask yourself this question: Why do you need to take a drug to relieve a symptom for the rest of your life when what you are seeking is a cure for the problem? I would want to eliminate the health challenge permanently and not just camouflage the symptoms. No creature on this planet has a disease or health challenge because of a lack of medicine. It’s only because of the results of a deficient diet and the toxic load that we inflict. We all have the power to eat healthier foods. We all have the power to eliminate the toxins used on our lawns, in our cleaning products and also in our living spaces

and that of our pets. The main objective here is to eat the cleanest, species specific diet and rid our immediate environment and body of as many toxins that we can. We can start with purified air, water and real food that is free of additives, chemicals and preservatives. We have the control and should not relinquish it to those that may only have a financial interest at hand. Our doctors and veterinarians are there to help, but realistically they do make their living from the illness of ourselves’ and our pets. Medicine has a place in critical care but is not based on optimal health. It is your responsibility to provide a toxin free environment, a healthy diet and also provide the love and attention that your pet needs to lead a normal, healthy life. A Single Girl’s Guide to South Florida and Beyond... NO, I’M GOOD, REALLY!!! “Too much of a good thing can be wonderful.”- Mae West If you are reading this and over 35, chances are you have either been married previously and/or have kids. It’s pretty rare to find a “single” male or female these days, who was married more than 9 months and doesn’t have an offspring or an heir. I myself am an anomaly when it comes to being divorced without kids. But enough about me, this column is all about YOU! Most men I meet with children from a previous relationship always say the same thing at the get-go; “No, I’m good with what I’ve got.” It’s like the same line they use when a waitress asks if they have room for dessert. They just couldn’t possibly consider eating one more morsel or adding anything into their digestive mix. Their reply, “Yep, I’m good. Pretty full here, really!” At a coffee date with a girlfriend just last week, the conversation turned into an analytical session about why the men we meet with kids, are opposed to having more. We agreed that this scenario seems like it’s becoming more the norm when it comes to dating in our age bracket. We also established that this isn’t just limited to the men in the dating pool. Several women we know, with children, scream loud and clear that they are “closed for future business” when it comes to “mommy-hood” of another with another. These ladies are apparently over the diaper duty and late night feedings. Thanks to television and movies, we now have specific role models that make this new norm easier to understand for the dating layman. For instance… Carol & Mike Brady: The couple who understand the idea of a blended family. “I have kids and you have kids” so let’s throw everyone in the mix, hire a maid named Alice and become the Brady Bunch. Sam Baldwin: Whether its sleepless in Seattle, Boca or Delray, it doesn’t matter the geography. Chances are this single dad is

128 November 2013 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

more than “bursting at the seams” with one child that demands most of his free time. Samantha Jones: The woman who is proud, confident and no longer age appropriate for motherhood. This is the woman who is nonchalant toward dating and monogamy and probably enjoys her freedom and sex in the city (and/or in Boca) too much to date someone with a child. Gloria Pritchett: The 2nd and maybe younger, HOTTER wife who wants to have a child with her new husband. Yep, not too many of us can be as gorgeous as Sofia Vegara but nothing wrong with attempting a “modern family” if the man isn’t opposed to adding to the roster. More often than not, those with children seem to “like what they got” and don’t plan

on adding anything to the gene pool. Does a single girl or guy close off to dating someone who feels this way? Do they give up on something that might flourish into a lifelong commitment for the price of maternal or paternal parenthood? Or should you stand your ground and hope that someday you will land your soul mate, 2.5 kids and a white picket fence? If you are currently contemplating moving ahead with someone and are faced with this situation, just remember that changing someone is a relatively robust task to assume. Most people out of their 20’s are pretty set in their ways both morally, mentally and physically. It’s probably time for that internal heart to heart. You just gotta decide to forgo biological parenting or take your chances and move on leaving skid marks on Atlantic Ave. There is no right or wrong when it comes to having more kids just like no one can decide what it is that you really need in this life. They say that children are one of lives greatest treasures, but so is a healthy relationship with the “RIGHT” one even if it’s with someone else’s DNA offshoot. Too much of a good thing CAN BE wonderful! Go out and find your own personal wonderful, no matter what it looks like. And when you do find wonderful, it’s ok to overdose. Wonderful comes in all kinds of shapes, sizes, scenarios and surprises. Even when you can’t eat another bite, there is always room for a little something sweet! Nicole, a card carrying “California Girl” was born and raised in a suburb of Los Angeles but now is officially a “Boca Girl”. A graduate of the University of Southern California, Nicole owns a private consulting firm, “Flier Consulting”, which specializes in business development, marketing, public relations and special events. Nicole is an avid tennis player; enjoys working out, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. She is also single and ready to find “Mr. Right!”

travel ║ Perth, australia

Delights “Down Under”

{

I know it’s a long way to travel but Perth, Australia is a fabulous place to visit. Let’s face it; Australia REALLY is on the other side of the world! Travelling times vary but the quickest you will get there is around 30 hours. However, you could break up the travel time by stopping off at various destinations on route. Quantas Airline (one of Australia’s leading carriers) offers flights from Miami, stopping in Los Angeles, and again in Sydney, Australia before the last leg of the journey into Perth. So why not take the opportunity to stroll down Rodeo Drive

130 130 November November2013 2013| |www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

or visit Mickey at Disney Land? On your next stop take a trip to visit the famous Sydney Opera House. www. qantas.com.au/US. Once in Perth you will be met by a picture - postcard city. Situated on the banks of the Swan River, it is a

perfect setting. In summer (Sept end February) the weather is fantastic, with temperatures around 86 degrees and with over 50 miles of clean, white sandy beaches, Perth’s coastline is ideal for swimming and surfing.

The city offers free buses to get you around , where you can visit the Perth Mint, Swan Bells Tower, Art Gallery of WA and many more Perth tourist attractions. For some spectacular panoramic views of Perth and the river, a visit to Kings Park and Botanic gardens is a must! Take full advantage of the many lookout points available to the public or try the treetop walk for a unique view of the city or just enjoy a relaxing picnic in one of the many recreation areas of the park. Visit King Street for some up-market retail therapy, packed with boutiques, art galleries, eateries and beautiful people; it’s the place to be seen! Just 10 minutes north of the city is Scarborough Beach where you can fish, swim, surf, skate and windsurf. If you travel another 10 minutes north you will find Hillary’s Marina. A recreation boating harbor with restaurants; bars, shops, galleries and tourist attractions set on walk ways over the Indian Ocean. From here you can take a 45 minute ferry to Rottnest Island where you can experience some fantastic diving and snorkeling amongst the coral reefs; hidden bays and deserted cycle paths waiting to be explored. The

small marsupial quokka, a bit like a small Kangaroo, only exists on this island, and in some parts they have become very tame. Alternatively if you head south from Perth you will come to Fremantle. Fremantle is recognized as the best preserved 19th Century seaport in the world! Over 150 buildings in the port city are classified by the National Trust. These include: The Round House which was built in 1831 and is the oldest public building in W.A., The Esplanade Hotel which was built in 1890s and the Fremantle Prison which was built by convict labor in the 1850s. You can also get a ferry to Rottnest Island from here. Still heading south you come across the town of Rockingham. Here there are water sports of all kinds, ocean cruises, camping, sailing, dolphin encounters, swimming, crabbing, museums, penguin and seal tours, wine tasting, theaters, golfing…plus much more. Again traveling south you reach Mandurah where the heart of the city is arranged around an estuary, crisscrossed by pleasure boats and pontoon barges, and is alive with cafes and restaurants dotted along the boardwalks. Follow the meandering waterways out into the Peel Region,

and restaurants, wineries, historical sites and many other attractions bring still more variety and fresh surprises to your Mandurah visit. We spotted some spectacular homes on the water and it reminded me of our very own Intracoastal. BUT of course no trip to Western Australia would be complete without a visit into the ‘bush’. One of WA most popular places is Kalbarri National Park, a seven hour drive from Perth or you can fly there in about 2 hours. Located on WA’s mid north coast, Kalbarri National Park is known for its spectacular scenery and red rock gorges that were cut from the landscape by the mighty Murchison River. It offers a range of adventure activities like bush walking, gorge hiking and canoeing. The park is rich in bird life and other animals. Most native mammals are nocturnal but you can sometimes see western grey kangaroos and emus during the day. The park also takes in amazing coastal cliffs and gorges including Red Bluff and Pot Alley. Visit www.kalbarri.org.au for more information. I hope this has given you a taste of what Western Australia has to offer. Look out next month for a holiday destination a little closer to home!

We throw around the word “influential” too freely these days.

{

We all know people who claim to be influential, but as the old saying goes: “If you have to say you are you usually aren’t.”

In the case of Nancy Hurd, the word influential is not only fitting, it’s probably an understatement. If we ever built a Mount Rushmore in Delray, she would undoubtedly be one of the faces carved into the mountain. Nancy Hurd, the longtime leader of the Achievement Center for Children and Families, is getting ready to step down from her post after 44 magnificent years of caring for, nurturing, educating and loving our community’s most vulnerable children. She started in a small room at a local church and grew her non-profit into a model for all others all the while never losing the personal touch that her kids needed in order to thrive. I first met Nancy in that small church and I followed her career as she grew the center eventually landing in a beautiful facility just off of Lake Ida Road. I was honored to serve on Nancy’s board and was privileged to see up close the amazing work she and her staff

134 November 2013 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

accomplished in our community. Along the way, Nancy developed a great team because that’s what leaders do—they make sure they build a team to perpetuate the mission. And now that Nancy is retiring she can rest assured that her successor Stephanie Seibel is ready and more than capable of continuing perhaps the most important mission of all in Delray—taking care of our neediest children and families. And in Delray that need is acute. I have always felt that our city is America in 16 square miles, with all the diversity, wealth and crushing poverty that is our country today. Consider this: the poverty rate in Delray Beach is 25 percent, 60 percent of the children in Delray live in poverty, the poverty level for a family of four is $28,000 per year, families served by the Achievement Center average just $14,000 per year. These are the people that Nancy has devoted her life to serving. What makes Nancy’s life and work so extraordinary is the thousands of lives she has

touched over many generations. By providing a safe, loving environment, with learning opportunities and a full suite of services for at-risk families, she has helped so many beautiful kids escape the cycle of poverty and despair so they can live safe, healthy and productive lives. I can overwhelm you with facts and figures because the Achievement Centers certainly has them to back up their work. But instead I invite you to visit the center, get involved and experience for yourself the feeling and atmosphere those 44 years of loving work has created. That’s influence, real influence. Nancy’s lifetime of passion for children and people will continue to pay dividends for generations to come. Well done, my friend. A heartfelt thanks from an admiring fan.
