from the publisher

A

s publisher, I can say that myself and all the staff of Atlantic Ave Magazine wish a fond farewell to our longstanding Editor, Jeff Perlman.

We ‘Thank you’ Jeff for the many years of service

and loyalty you have shown to the magazine. Your wealth of local knowledge in all aspects of Delray Beach, the town that you love, has kept our readers up-to-date on everything that people want and need to know regarding this town.

Your absence will be felt!!! We will miss having you as a mem-

ber of the team and as the great advocate and spokesman you have been for Atlantic Ave Magazine for so long.

We wish you all the very best for the future and look forward

to seeing you around town…

As one train departs it makes room for another….Currently ar-

riving at the station we welcome our new Editor, Yvette Roulette. Having been with the magazine for many years, Yvette has

seen many changes take place. She started out under another publisher based in Coral Springs where she went out to see

clients and sell them advertising space. It soon became clear that her forte was directing traffic from within the office. Writing and editing became a much larger part of her workload, along with

scheduling and meeting deadlines. She too is a great advocate of the magazine, with her goal being to raise the profile of Atlantic Ave Magazine.

We wish Yvette every success in her new position and are con-

fident that she will continue to do a fabulous job for the magazine. Look out for her first “Editor’s Letter” in our May issue.

Retreats allow families to relax, enjoy time together, forge new friendships and create support groups with other families in similar circumstances. When one person in a family is sick, the entire family is impacted and there are very few organizations nationwide that focus on the whole family unit like Deliver the Dream. Delivering Food and Warmth to PB County Seniors Over Passover

Now in its nineteenth year, the MorseLife Homebound Mitzvah Program and its volunteers are making a difference on Thursday, April 21 to Jewish frail homebound seniors over the Passover who otherwise would not be able to experience its joys and traditions. More than 400 volunteers of all ages and from all walks of life prepare Homebound Mitzvah Program packages to deliver to seniors throughout Palm Beach County. The packages include traditional kosher for Passover meals, matzoh, wine, large print Haggadah and a DVD of a seder conducted by Rabbi Alan Sherman, Chaplain at MorseLife. Just as important, volunteers provide “quality time” to Homebound Mitzvah Program recipients – sitting and talking with them for a while to bring some additional warmth to the delivery. Passover begins the evening of April 22 and ends on the evening of April 30. Homebound Mitzvah Program volunteers gather for their deliveries on the continued page 20

MorseLife campus at 4847 Fred Gladstone Drive (off Haverhill Road) in West Palm Beach, and at Temple Torah in Boynton Beach at 8600 Jog Road from 8:30 until 3:30 pm. Since 1997, the Homebound Mitzvah Program has been reaching out to the area’s homebound elders in hopes of diminishing the loneliness and isolation frequently felt over Jewish holidays. It was founded by Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz, and is made possible through the generosity of community philanthropists and a grant from the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County. President John F. Kennedy Golf Club To Be Auctioned By Seinfeld Star To Benefit The American Cancer Society

In a case of life imitating art imitating life, “Mr. Peterman” (portrayed by actor John O’Hurley) will be conducting the auction of one of President John F. Kennedy’s golf clubs to benefit the American Cancer Society on March 21, 2016 at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. JFK Golf Club Head Fans of the NBC hit Seinfeld may recall the 1996 episode where the character “Elaine” bids on President John F. Kennedy’s golf clubs at the Sotheby’s auction for her boss “Mr. Peterman.” Fast forward to the American Cancer Society’s 48th Annual 19th Hole Club presented by the Addison Hines Charitable Trust where, in a twist of fate, “Mr. Peterman” will play auctioneer and will be offering JFK’s MacGregor wedge golf club to the highest bidder. The golf club to be auctioned is labeled “58 – “59, JFK Palm Beach (1-11-1968)” and will be on public display at the Golfino store at 150 Worth Avenue in Palm Beach March 12 – 20, 2016. Dollars 4 Tic Scholars Welcomes NY Comedian, Raises Money For Scholarships At “Friday Nite With Chelsea White” Fundraiser

Comedian Chelsea White, standup comedian and writer/ producer of MTV’s Girl Code and Girl Code Live, was in Delray Beach recently on behalf of Dollars 4 Tic Scholars, a non-profit organization devoted to raising scholarship funds to sup-

port college students and summer campers who have Tourette Syndrome. White entertained guests with her comedy show mixed with a sprinkling of education about Tourette Syndrome on Friday, February 26 during “Friday Nite with Chelsea White” at the South County Civic Center in Delray Beach. In addition to the comedy show, the event included a Tic Simulation for guests, dinner, raffles, video messages from scholarship recipients, and a silent auction. White, like Dollars 4 Tic Scholars Cofounder Kelsey Diamantis, has Tourette Syndrome, a disorder characterized by chronic and involuntary motor and vocal tics. Diamantis kicked off “Friday Nite with Chelsea White” with a five minute Tic Simulation. Guests were given a “Tic Slip” when entering the event and asked to do their “tic” every time Diamantis rang a bell. “It is difficult for someone who doesn’t have Tourette to know what it feels like. A tic interrupts whatever you are doing, sometimes multiple times a minute,” said Diamantis. “This was the best way we could think of

Now that Delray Beach is a rising star in the art, culture and social scene, it might seem a little difficult to find affordable activities, shops or restaurants. I am here to prove you wrong. Delray Beach offers a mix of high-end boutiques with laid-back restaurants, and events for the whole family or nightclubs for night owls. Here is what you can do in Delray Beach in April for $50 or less.

M

iles and miles of crafts, artwork and fun in the sun! April is Straw Hat Month and it couldn’t come at a better time because the Delray Affair is back in town. The Greater Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce celebrates the 54th Annual Delray Affair, which is the largest arts and crafts festival in the Southeast United States and one that definitely turns Delray into a frenzy of crafters. The Affair is held along Atlantic Avenue from NW Second Avenue to the Intracoastal and features an eclectic mix of fine art, great crafts and funky products from around the world. Regardless if you need a new piece for your home or office, looking for early holiday gifts (seriously, some people start this early) or just need some inspiration for your personal crafting needs, the Affair is sure to have something – or everything – you didn’t know you needed. Last year, the Affair boasted vendors from 30 states and 12 countries so just imagine the possibilities! So grab your straw hat, your amigos and comfy walking shoes because we’re hitting the streets and getting our arts and crafts on. The Delray Affair is held Friday, April 8 and Saturday, April 9 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, April 10 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free so you have free reign to peruse the more than 600 vendors and enjoy live music all weekend long. Call (561) 279-0907 or visit www.delrayaffair. com for more information.

is. There’s just something about the ebb and flow of the waves, the feel of the sand and the warmth of the sun that just sets everything right. April is Keep America Beautiful Month and is a great time to hit the beach with your friends and put in a little sweat equity to keep our backyard beach as beautiful as we want it to be. If you need a little guidance, I’ve got your back. The Sandoway House, Delray Beach Parks and Recreation and Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful, Inc. present America’s largest litter reduction and community improvement project: the Great American Cleanup. Held Saturday, April 23 at 8 a.m., you’re invited to stroll the beach and pick up all the litter you can find. You are guaranteed to find your body weight in cigarette butts (gross), plastic bottles, plastic bags, and the like, but are also assured to leave feeling like you made a difference saving sea creatures, the beach and the beach vegetation that are at the brunt of the aforementioned butts. Give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done and head to Caffe Luna Rosa for a celebratory cocktail. You’ve earned it. The Great American Cleanup is held at the Sandoway House, 142 S. Ocean Blvd. and not only will supplies be provided, but you can also earn community service hours. Please call (561) 243-7277 or visit www.mydelraybeach. com for more information.

here’s a vast difference between being healthy and celebrating overall

wellness. Healthy literally means the absence of disease, whereas wellness means the state or condition of being in good physical and mental health, and even I get stuck in between. If I can fit into my jeans from college then I’m healthy, right? Negatory, my friend. If you need a little pickme-up in the wellness department, grab your yoga mat and workout pants because you’re hitting the “om” zone. April is Physical Wellness Month and you’re invited to enjoy yoga with live music at The Colony Hotel on Sundays. Held from 9:30 to 11

a.m., you and 100 of your local friends get down and flexible with your inner being and stretch your way into wellness bliss. The class is led by Keith Fox of YogaFox and the electric backdrop of the historic Hotel could not be better for finding your inner neon. The class is $25 and drop-ins are welcome, but book your appointment if you’d like to make sure you have a spot. They also offer classes throughout the week for $15 per class, but don’t feature live music, so pick your fancy. The Colony Hotel is located at 525 E. Atlantic Ave. Call (704) 756-9245 or visit www.yogafox.com for more information.

et’s be real. Ooey, gooey, melted cheese makes everything better. I don’t care who you are but liquid gold is perfect for hangovers, breakups, celebrations and literally every holiday. Join me in celebrating the deliciously tasty holiday: National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Month. The local gem, Granger’s Grille, happens to serve my favorite grilled cheese in town. Aptly named Glorified Grilled Cheese, their sandwich is a combination of six cheeses and served with Yukon Gold chips. But, oh no, the fun doesn’t stop there. Go crazy and add on any – or all! – of their offerings: bacon, chili, broccoli, fried green tomatoes, fried bologna, tomato and jalapenos. This love-at-first-sight sandwich is only $7.50 and add-ons start at $1. Another tempting option is over at Dada where they serve the Seven Cheese Grilled Cheese, complete with cheddar, Swiss, goat, blue, sheep feta, American and Muenster on sour dough with a side of tomato bisque. You are most certainly guaranteed to get a heart-stopping amount of heavenly enjoyment with this sandwich and you can’t beat the $10.50 price tag. Whatever your grilled cheese pleasure, cows, sheep and goats everywhere beg of you to indulge, so don’t let them down. Granger’s Grille is located at 215 N.E. Sixth Ave. and call (561) 276-7881 or visit www.grangersgrille.com for more information. Dada is located at 52 N. Swinton Ave. Call (561) 330-3232 or visit www. sub-culture. org/dada.com for more information.

love the idea of a jazz club. Large booths, dim lights, martinis and notes of velvet just whisper a seductively good time. If you want to join me in filling the jazz void, make sure to attend the Roy Assaf Trio, presented by the Arts Garage. April is Jazz Appreciation Month and it’s easy to enjoy jazz when the tunes are coming from a world-renowned Israeli jazz pianist. After graduating from Berklee College of Music, Roy Assaf met legendary bassist and producer, John Lee, and soon found himself touring the world with a myriad of famous jazz masters. Several years later, while completing his master’s degree at the Manhattan School of Music, Roy established his reputation as one of the most sought-after young pianists in the New York jazz scene. In 2013, he formed a trio with Raviv Markovitz on bass and Jake Goldbas on drums and together they have toured the country to establish their unique voice as the Roy Assaf trio. The show is held Saturday, April 16 at 9 a.m. and tickets start at $25. You can also enhance your evening with bring-your-own food and drinks so break out the fancy glasses and napkins so you can toot your own culinary horn. The Arts Garage is located at 94 N.E. Second Ave. Visit www.artsgarage.org or call (561) 450-6357 for more information and to purchase tickets.

M

y name is George Winters and three years ago I left Brentwood, Tennessee to return to Delray Beach as I still consider it “home. I had lived in South Florida since 1974. There is nothing like the ocean air, the vibe of downtown Delray and all that South Florida has to offer. I have been in the customer service industry in various different forms, whether it was our family restaurants in New Jersey and in Deerfield Beach, a residential cleaning company in Boca Raton or my current residential concierge service in Boca/Delray. So, upon my arrival back to Delray Beach I started my residential concierge service again, and it just seemed logical that my next step would be to obtain my realtors license. Who better to sell your home then someone that has been taking care of it, knows it inside and out, and treats it like his own? After having built and sold three homes over the years I know what it takes to put a property on the market and get it sold! Delray’s Largest District Has A New Brand

Downtown’s West Atlantic Neighborhood has a new name

44 April 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Vice Mayor Shelly Petrolia and Calisha Anderson of CaliBrand Consulting

A new identity is emerging for the long-standing residential and business communities surrounding the Atlantic Avenue corridor, from Interstate-95 to Swinton Avenue. This area, collectively referred to as the West Atlantic Neighborhood, has a new name that reflects both the rich history of the area and the growth and investment it is currently experiencing: The Set. On March 9, 2016, The Set’s new brand platform was unveiled to a room of approximately fifty collaborative City partners, including fourof-five City Commissioners, the management team from the City Manager’s Office, and board and staff representing the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), Downtown Development Authority (DDA), Spady Museum, Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative (DBMC), the Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce, and more. The new identity is the result of a branding initiative by the governing board of the West Atlantic Redevelopment Coalition (WARC). The nonprofit organization set out to capture the West Atlantic Neighborhood’s most compelling and attractive assets

– people and places – with an identity that builds interest, awareness and recognition throughout Delray Beach and beyond. The brand development process included several months of intensive research by CaliBrand Consulting, a Delray Beach-based marketing firm contracted by WARC through funding provided by the DDA. The WARC Board and its Promotions Committee selected the name “The Set” from among eight options suggested by CaliBrand Consulting, finding it to be best suited to unify the West Atlantic Neighborhood with other areas of the city while honoring its distinction from the eastern portion of downtown and beachside neighbors in a positive way. The Set is reminiscent of many elements and themes found throughout the area, such as Delray’s original pioneers (the West Settlers), the sun setting in the west, and tennis sets played at the Delray Beach Tennis Center, which is located on West Atlantic Avenue. The official public launch of The Set will occur on Friday, May 20, 2016 at a block party event on Historic NW 5th Avenue, home of the Spady Museum.

April 1 Anthony Hopkins as a ruthless mob boss? No fooling, that’s what it says on the Movie Insider web site, describing the thriller “Collide.” A heist goes horribly wrong (don’t they always?), and Casey Stein finds himself on the run from aforementioned ruthless bad guy, Hagen Kahn (Hopkins). Casey is forced to enlist the help of his former employer, the drug smuggler Geron (Ben Kingsley) to protect his imperiled girlfriend Juliette (Felicity Jones). Written and directed by Eran Creevy (“Welcome to the Punch”), “Collide” climaxes with a spectacular car chase on the Autobahns of Germany. April 8 “Hardcore Henry” is not about porn, but it is R-rated due to excessive violence, profanity, nudity and drug use. A young man has been brought back from

the dead by his wife (Haley Bennett), who says his name is Henry (Tim Roth). Five minutes later he is being shot at, his wife is being kidnapped, and he is being pursued by warlord Akan (Danila Kozlovsky) through the streets of Moscow. Only a mysterious Brit named Jimmy (Shalto Copley) may be able to help him. Ilya Naishuller wrote and directs. How about a comedy written by and starring Melissa McCarthy? That would be “The Boss,” starring McCarthy as a business titan who is sent to prison for insider trading. When she gets out, she tries to rebrand herself as America’s Sweetheart, but not everyone she has wronged is willing to forgive and forget. Director Ben Falcone co-wrote the script that also stars Peter Dinklage, Kristen Bell, Kathy Bates and Kristen Schaal. Remember the adorable boy in “Room?” Jason Tremblay has a starring role in “Before I Wake” as Cody, an 8-year-old boy taken in by Jessie (Kate Bosworth) and Mark (Thomas Jane), who did not know or why Cody is terrified to go to sleep. If he does, his awful nightmares have a tendency to become reality. Mike Flanagan (“Oculus”) directs a cast that includes Annabeth Gish, Kyle Deaver and Dash Mihok. April 16 How about “The Jungle Book” for a new generation? The 1967 Disney animated film was inspired by Rudyard Kipling’s 1894 children’s book. The new version is live action in 3-D, directed by Jon Favreau (“Iron Man” and “Iron Man 2,” “Jersey Boys). It stars newcomer Neel Setti is man-cub Mowgli, raised by wolves and cast out of the jungle by fearsome tiger Shere Khan (voice of Idris Elba) and guided by panther-mentor Bagheera (Ben Kingsley) and accompanied by free-spirited bear Baloo (Bill Murray). Along the way he is misled by

the hypnotizing python Kaa (Scarlett Johansson) and smooth-talking King Louie (Christopher Walken), who wants the secret of the deadly red flower, fire “Barbershop: The Next Cut” is also known as “Barbershop 3.” Ice Cube is back as Calvin, owner of the barbershop that bears his name, as is Cedric the Entertainer as his sidekick. The big news is Calvin’s Barbershop has gone coed, with Regina Hall and Nicki Minaj joining the staff. Also featured are Common and Michael Rainey, Jr. under the direction of Malcolm D. Lee (“Best Man Holiday,” “Scary Movie 5”). “Criminal” is a rather non-specific title. In the case of this thriller by Ariel Vroman (“The Iceman”), a dangerous criminal (Kevin Costner) is implanted with the memories and skills of a dead CIA agent (Ryan Reynolds) in hopes he can outsmart an international terrorist and his henchmen. Gary Oldman, Tommy Lee Jones, Douglas Cook and Alice Eve co-star. April 22 “Huntsman: Winter’s War” is also known as Snow White and the Huntsman II, which means Chris Hemsworth is back as the Huntsman, Charlize Theron is again the evil Queen Ravenna and Emily Blunt is her ice queen sister, Freya. Jessica Chastain joins the fray as warrior Sara. Nick Frost and Sam Claflin round out the cast. French director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, who directed the 2012 original, returns for duty. April 29 “Mother’s Day” brings together Jennifer Anniston, Kate Hudson and Julia Roberts in a warm tribute to mothers directed by Garry Marshall (“Pretty Woman”). The guys include Jason Sudekis and Timothy Olyphant. Renee Zellwegger is back on the big screen after a six-year absence as Debbie, the wife of international art dealer Ron Hall (Greg Kennear) in “Same Kind of Different as Me.” Ron must befriend a dangerous homeless man named Denver (Djimon Hounsou) to save his marriage. Jon Voight plays Kinnear’s father and Olivia Hall is daughter Regan in a screenplay written by director Michael Carnet with the real Ron Hall.

Surf’s Up, Gizmo!

By Suzanne Kline (A Delray Beach Resident) Surf’s Up, Gizmo! is based on a real-life Norfolk Terrier, who is a young service dog and Kline’s best friend. In his books, Gizmo spends time on his surfboard with his friends, Benny the Octopus, Molly the Dolphin, and Bubbles the Clown Fish as they offer tips to kids on surfing life’s unexpected waves. Appealingly illustrated and highly entertaining, Surf’s Up, Gizmo! shows children that being more aware of each experience helps them deal with the stress of what they’re facing, – from impending hospital procedures or family issues, to difficult subjects in school. The life lessons in Surf’s Up, Gizmo! are culled from Kline’s personal story. Following a serious auto accident and traumatic brain injury, she re-invented her life, found renewed purpose doing volunteer work for children with her service dog, and was inspired to write children’s books. Designated proceeds from the book benefit the Surf’s Up, Gizmo! Children’s Foundation. A not-for-profit organization that will purchase and donate passenger vans decorated with surfing Gizmo and his sea friends to children’s hospitals. The organization’s mission is to provide children and their parents with safe transportation to and from their healthcare appointments, and to help create awareness for children’s health programs in their local communities.For more information, visit www. surfsupgizmo.com or www.facebook. com/surfsupgizmo.

50 April 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

trial for the six p.m. news. She should be thrilled, yet her growing desire to locate her birth mother consumes her thoughts. When Delaney’s friends Alvirah Meehan and her husband Willy offer to look into the mystery surrounding her birth, they uncover a shocking secret they do not want to reveal. On trial for murder is Betsy Grant, widow of a wealthy doctor who has been an Alzheimer’s victim for eight years. When her once-upon-a-time celebrity lawyer urges her to accept a plea bargain, Betsy refuses: she will go to trial to prove her innocence. Betsy’s stepson, Alan Grant, bides his time nervously as the trial begins. His substantial inheritance hangs in the balance—his only means of making good on payments he owes his ex-wife, his children, and increasingly angry creditors. As the trial unfolds, and the damning evidence against Betsy piles up, Delaney is convinced that Betsy is not guilty and frantically tries to prove her innocence. A true classic from Mary Higgins Clark, As Time Goes By is a thrilling read by a master of the genre.

Now That I’ve Found You (New York Sullivans #1)

by Bella Andre Released April 13, 2016 Millions of readers have fallen in love with the San Francisco and Seattle Sullivans. Now get ready to fall head over heels for the New York Sullivans! World-renowned artist Drake Sullivan doesn’t paint women. Ever. Not when he knows all too well just how destructive painter/muse relationships can be. But on the day Rosa Bouchard walks onto the cliffs outside his Montauk cottage, Drake is so captivated that he can’t stop himself from bringing her to life on canvas. Shocked and horrified by the nude photos of her that have just hit the Internet, reality TV star Rosa’s every instinct is to run from her Miami home and hide. After driving all night, she ends up in Montauk, New York, where she doesn’t know a soul and plans to lie low until she can figure out how to deal with the media firestorm--and her own mother, who seems all too happy to sell out Rosa’s happiness for more fame, more fans, and more money. The very last thing Rosa expects is to find, and to fall for, a sinfully sexy man like Drake Sullivan. Drake has never felt this way about anything he’s painted...and he’s definitely never felt this way about a woman. When they kiss, everything but sweet, breathless desire melts away. But can he convince Rosa to trust--and to love-again after such a devastating betrayal?

Advances in the Treatment of Traumatic Brain Injuries

{

By Dr. John Conde

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of death and disability worldwide. This is especially true for children and young adults. Males usually sustain traumatic brain injuries at a greater frequency than females. Traumatic brain injuries are usually caused by a focal impact upon the head and in accidents secondary to an acceleration/deceleration force put upon the head.

You can see why the National Football League and the National Hockey League are under such scrutiny regarding traumatic brain injuries and concussions. In-fact, secondary to the immense pressure put on the National Football League for more effective measures to diagnose and treat brain injuries we now know what typically happens to the brain of a football player after years of playing, the condition is called Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). Changes in mood, cognition, and motor disturbances have been described as a consequence of this progressive disease. The major concern immediately following a head injury are making sure that there is adequate oxygen supply, maintaining blood flow to the brain, and controlling raised intracranial pressure. Axonal injury is typically a direct result of the accident as well as blood supply compromise which can lead to intracranial hemorrhaging (brain-bleed) or ischemia which robs the brain of oxygen. This is termed the acute stage of injury and is the most critical for sustaining life and may last for a couple of weeks. The chronic stage, however, describes the significant impairments left in the wake of the injury which can have a detrimental impact on activities of daily living such that it can leave an individual in a vegetative state. In regards to the chronic state some of the main signs and symptoms are the following: motor signs such as spasticity or hemiplegia/ quadriplegia, mood impairments such as docility or aggresivity, emotional impairments such as anxiety or depression, impairments of executive function such as difficulty with planning and problem solving and short term 52 April 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

memory, and lastly difficulty with cognition such as visuo-spatial awareness and focus and attention. Although some neurological insult or death may have occurred secondary to the injury, through the concepts of plasticity we know that there may be other viable pathways that are available which can be strengthened and made more efficient to pick up the slack. Hence, rehabilitation is essential in restoring some of the function lost. Traditional therapy is essential for the restoration such as speech therapy, physical therapy, and occupational therapy. However, thanks to a monumental push in the literature for more advanced therapies and treatment options we now have neurological assessment and rehabilitation tools that are truly revolutionary. The most essential component in the management and treatment of a chronic brain injury is the examination. Isolating the injury to a generalized area is of upmost importance in setting up the correct treatment regimen. Examination procedures should include a thorough assessment of eye movement pathology, limb coordination, and testing of dynamic posturography or balance. A breakdown in eye movements and balance disturbance is almost always seen in traumatic brain injuries. Cutting-edge tools now exist for the rehabilitation of traumatic brain injuries. The Dynavision D2 is a visuo-motor-spatial rehabilitation tool that is setting the standard in the 21st century for brain injury therapeutics. The utilization of the Dynavision D2 promotes significant integration in three areas of the brain termed the frontal lobe, basal ganglia, and cerebellum. These neurological structures are typically

most affected in a traumatic brain injury. The user is required to manually compress targets made up of LED lights that are blinking in a strategically established manner according to the neurological presentation of the person. The information is recorded and attention is focused on speed and sequence. In conjunction with the Dynavision D2, specific neurological rehabilitation procedures utilizing environmental stimuli such as light, sound, sensory aspects, olfactory aspects, eye movements, and unilateral stimulation are now being incorporated in the literature. These therapies can be specifically directed at the under functioning brain regions to encourage activation analogous to resistance exercises to build muscle. One therapy that incorporates light, sound, and limb coordination is the Interactive Metronome. The user is prompted to keep up with a computer generated beat utilizing triggers that can be worn on the hands or feet. Lastly, in regards to diet and nutrition significant focus is placed in the literature on anti-oxidants. The anti-oxidants specifically mentioned are reduced glutathione, CO-Q10, acetyl-L-carnitine, and alpha lipoic acid. The most extensively researched and efficacious anti-oxidant is CO-Q10. In general the main purpose of the anti-oxidants is to “clean up” debris in the form of free radicals that are produced secondary to the injury. Eyebrow Thinning

{

By Thomas C. Balshi, M.D.

Medically, it’s known as superciliary madarosis, from the Greek madaros, which means “bald.” Women, who often regard this as devastating, simply know it as thinning eyebrows. Surprisingly, most women over 40 are affected.

Eyebrows are a very important part of an attractive face. Male or female, the brows contribute to the emotion of the face. Like window treatments enhancing beautiful windows, the brows add the finishing touch to a pair of healthy, sparkling eyes. Lush thick brows imply youth. In combination with the eyes they facilitate our interactive skills with others. They are part of our natural make-up and our face just doesn’t look the same without them. There are many reasons why someone can lose eyebrow hair. Years of over plucking can be the culprit but there are also medical conditions that result in thinning of the eyebrows. The first step should be to identify the cause and then we move on to determine the best “fix.” Below are the most common causes of thinning eyebrows. 1. Hypothyroidism Also known as Queen Anne’s sign, it’s not nearly as beautiful as the name implies. It’s 54 April 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

a thinning of the lateral third of one’s eyebrows and can be a result of hypothyroidism. If you notice you’re feeling fatigued, have low moods and dry skin, or are becoming intolerant to cold, you are exhibiting symptoms and should consult an endocrinologist. 2. Nutrient deficiency Diets that are short on vitamins A, E, D and B can lead to a thinning of the eyebrows. A lack of biotin, iron and lysine will also make the hair weak and brows look sparse. Luckily, most of these nutrients can be found in natural foods like walnuts, spinach, carrots and kale. They’re also available in eggs and fish. A healthy diet might alleviate the problem. 3. Seborrheic Dermatitis Seb Derm, commonly known as eczema, it can be found anywhere on the body. And yes, that includes the skin underneath the eyebrows. Red, itchy patches become inflamed and hair thins over these patches. This is one for the dermatologist. 4. Alopecia Areata Alopecia areata is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the immune system erroneously attacks the hair follicles, causing inflammation and temporary hair loss. Any hair-bearing skin site can be affected by alopecia areata, including the eyebrows. Again, see the dermatologist. 5. Aging As one grows old, the production of hormones like estrogen decreases. This makes one susceptible to levels of DHT in hair follicles. DHT (a hormone like testosterone)

forms a barrier that prevents the nutrients from reaching the hair. When that happens, brow hairs begin to fall as a result. This is the toughest “fix.” What should one do if suffering from eyebrow thinning? 1. If due to thyroid issues, an endocrinologist will be able to provide medications to treat the condition. 2. Try eating healthy and consuming lots of natural vitamins. 3. See a dermatologist for thinning combined with redness or discomfort. 4. People who have thinning brows due to age might want to consider permanent cosmetic tattoos. The road to permanent, beautiful brows could start with something as simple as finding a good technician. Or for a less aggressive approach, there are several makeup tips on YouTube about how to make thinning eyebrows look fuller. 5. Protect what you have. If you notice your brows thinning, don’t make it worse by continuing with the plucking, shaving, rubbing or any of the other stuff you used to do. Instead, take care to pamper the brows and wash them tenderly. 6. Try re-growth serums. Dermatologists may offer a serum specifically for eyebrows. These are different from “Rogaine” which does not work to re-grow eyebrows. Always consult with a doctor when involving the use of serums. Most importantly, whether medically caused or strictly a cosmetic issue, a good dermatologist will understand your need and advise you the best way to achieve it. Dr. Thomas C. Do I really need

fluoride?

{

BY Craig Spodak, DMD, PA

Ask any dentist and you’ll get the same answer: a resounding yes.

“There’s fluoride in the water, isn’t there? So I don’t need fluoride treatment!” Wrong. Historically, tooth decay has been reduced dramatically and the key reason is fluoride. Research shows that fluoride reduces cavities in both children and adults by making the tooth structure stronger so teeth are more resistant to acid attacks, and also acting to repair the areas in which acid attacks have already begun. However, just drinking water isn’t going to give you all the fluoride you need for a healthy smile. Fluoride is the 13th most abundant element on the earth’s crust and is found naturally in soil, water, foods and minerals. By 1960, water fluoridation had become widely used in the U.S. and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention has even listed fluoride as one of the 10 great public health achievements of the 20th Century. Fluoride in drinking water is beneficial to preventing tooth decay in children whose teeth are still developing. For adults, the only effective fluoride treatment is topical fluoride, and, more specifically, topical fluoride varnish. Every day as we eat and drink, teeth weaken and demineralize with acids, sugars, dry mouth, medications and improper/ poor home dental care, which increases the risk of tooth decay. A cavity happens when demineralization is greater than the body’s ability to remineralize, and this is where fluoride comes in. Fluoride varnish has been found most effective to remineralize or repair tooth structure and prevent decay. If you have dental work, crowding, gum recession, periodontal disease (past or present) or rarely floss, you have an increased risk of tooth decay and therefore an increased need for topical fluoride treatments. Rinses and gels have very limited exposure to tooth structure because there is no 56 April 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

staying power. Topical fluoride varnish is a natural, sticky resin and stays on the teeth for hours, thereby extending the treatment time and increasing the effectiveness. The other benefit of varnish is that it is a .5 mL dose (roughly a tenth of a teaspoon) and treats the entire mouth. Therefore, the likelihood of swallowing any is pretty impossible. The same dose is effective for both children and adults, and is also safe and recommended for infants. As we go through life, our mouths become drier and our teeth experience increased wear. Add in old dental work that is starting to break down, busy lifestyles, a carbohydrate-laden diet, and we are all at moderate risk for dental decay. Studies show that topical fluoride varnish is the most cost-effective way to prevent tooth decay and promote

healthy communities. There are studies that show the cost benefit factor of fluoride is an eight time return on your money, so continue using fluoride or the time is now to add fluoride varnish to your dental regimen. Recent studies confirm that receiving a topical fluoride varnish every three to six months, for children and adults, is the best option and will help reduce cavities. Talk to your doctor and hygienist if you have any questions regarding the benefits of fluoride. They will be able to recommend the best course of treatment to maintain your healthiest smile! Tips For The

New Mama

{

By Ashley Sica

As a mom of 2 and one on the way, I know how overwhelming and tiring it can be when trying to get your pre-baby body back. Between sleepless nights and the constant care of your little one (and the whole other list of “mom-duties”) working out can quickly seem like something of the past.

There were many days when I wondered if I’d ever be in as good of shape as I was pre-baby. But let me tell you…I’ve done it 2 times (and I’m about to do it again) and each time I’ve come back stronger than the time before. With a little patience, dedication and sweat it can be done. Here are some different tips and ideas that I’ve found helpful in my ventures to regain my pre-baby body. 1. Set mini-goals If you have a good amount of weight to loose, don’t focus on the final amount. Set a weekly goal that is manageable. 1 to 2lbs of weight loss per week is a great start. Be consistent and patient and the weight will fall off before you know it. 2. Get it done early I really started to notice a change in my body when I started to get my workouts done first thing in the morning before the baby/rest of household woke up. Yes, it’s extremely hard some mornings after a not so restful night of sleep but it’s well worth it. Nothing beats the feeling of knowing your workout is complete before 7am and of course it’s one less thing to worry about in your hectic day. Leaving it for later in the day leaves way too much wiggle room for “life” to get in the way. 3. Food Prep 101 This is a MUST! Nutrition is 80% of your results and will play a huge role in getting your pre-baby body back. On Sundays I like to take the time to pre-make some “clean” food to ensure I always have something healthy to eat on hand. As a busy mom 58 April 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

having my food prepped allows me to stay away from junk food and saves a huge amount of time during the week. 4. Take progress pictures These are for the days where you’re feeling defeated and like no progress has been

made. Trust me…one look at your “starting” pic and you won’t be feeling so bad about yourself. 5. Don’t let breastfeeding fool you Yes, it does serve as a weight loss tool for some but definitely not for all. I am one of those where I didn’t drop a pound from breastfeeding (besides the initial drop after baby) until I was done. If you’re one of the lucky ones embrace it, if not just hang in there and know its all for a good cause. 6. Invest in a baby jogger. For days its impossible to get to the gym a baby jogger will be your savior. It’s a win-win situation. You can burn an ample amount of calories while happily entertaining your little one. The jogger doesn’t just allow for jogging…think outside of the box and think along the lines of squats, lunges, side lunges, frog jumps etc. Ok, you might get some odd looks from people driving by…but who really cares! It’s all about using your time wisely and getting the most bang for your buck and time. Lastly, the most important thing to remember is to have a plan and be consistent! Without a plan of attack you your goals will be pushed to the way- side. Without consistency there will be no results. So those days when you want to throw in the towel…don’t! Give yourself a little slack, brush off the baby spit-up and keep on truckin! You’ve got this mama! It’s also a place where harmony and harvesting live in tandem with each other – in a culinary sense. It started 20 years ago with just 30 vendors and is now a part of the lifestyle-food style of the socially and environmentally conscious. To say that Dr. Oz would approve is an understatement. The clean food movement is what heralded in this natural local food movement, but it is markets such as this one 62 April 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

{

You can’t help but have a little spring in your step when walking around the Delray GreenMarket. It’s just that kind of a place.

that have cemented its place in the top tier of clean eating from local farmers and culinary artisans. That’s why The Delray GreenMarket is one of South Florida’s most exciting and coveted of Green Markets. There are 65 vendors that sell everything from farm fresh produce and fruit to grass fed chicken and beef, seafood, fresh baked goods and dairy products, sauces, oils, jams, handcrafted food specialties and enough good vibes to fill an amphitheater. The woman who has held court as the headmistress and master of ceremonies each Saturday morning is Lori Nolan. Nolan started as the GreenMarket Manager 17 years ago and continues her reign to this day. She inspires vendors, keeps it all in perspective and is altruistic in her role of supporting the best in guests and vendors. “The GreenMarket is the perfect place to find locally sourced produce, fruits, meat, poultry, artisan baked goods, gluten-free, sugar free, dairy free and vegan food items.

You can also meet the people who make and produce your food and establish a relationship with them.” For everyone involved – shoppers and vendors – the GreenMarket is a win-win. It’s also a fun place to socialize and drool over freshly baked croissants with almond paste or dip a toast square in a vat of olive oil or tapenade. “I often hear people swapping recipes and discussing how to prepare the food they’re buying. It’s a great social experience. There’s a lot of camaraderie here – there are no strangers, only people who haven’t met yet,” said Nolan. Launched in 1996 by the CRA, the Delray GreenMarket is held each Saturday in Old School Square Park from 9am to 2pm. There are tables for guests to leisurely enjoy the fruits of their culinary bounty, as well as live entertainment and crafts for children. The Winter Market is from October 29th to May 21st. From June 4th to August 27th it’s in the Tennis Center parking lot. The best part about this home-grown ex-

hibition of foodies (and their pedigree) is that you can get everything you’ll need for any meal. There’s also security in knowing that your food is fresh from the farm (or producer) and is made with honorable intentions. “In a grocery store the tomatoes are 18 days old when they first land on the shelf. When you buy produce and other goods here it’s just been picked,” said Nolan. That’s what keeps people coming back to the GreenMarket week after week. Especially regulars like Fred Kent, founder of Project for Public Spaces. “The GreenMarket is the best social space on Saturday mornings. It’s wonderful to be there. This is the place where people come - it’s a treasure.” It’s also a throwback to a simpler time when open-air markets and sharing food experiences with the butcher or shop keeper was a common denominator in everyone’s life. “The GreenMarket stemmed from the Slow Food movement that promoted the pleasure of cooking, eating and sharing meals with others and promoting local farmers, artisans and flavors through social gatherings and farmer’s markets.” It’s also breaking another transportation barrier. There’s weekly complementary bicycle valet service provided by Human Powered

Delray. “We are the only GreenMarket in South Florida with weekly complementary bicycle valet service. They’ll also check your tire pressure and adjust your brakes if needed.” Although the GreenMarket is a veritable feast of foods and delicacies there is a definite pattern to its existence. All vendors now face the sidewalk (instead of the grass) which makes it easier to walk the aisles and it’s ADA Compliant. That’s the beauty of this home grown GreenMarket. It not only fosters great local

food choices, but it’s another one of Delray’s relaxed outdoor experiences. For that many are grateful. “Our audience keeps growing, with more people looking to support our local farmers and vendors. It’s been an incredible 20 years.” Delray GreenMarket Old School Square Park - 51 N. Swinton Ave. 561-276-7511. MARC JULIEN HOMES By Diane Feen

{

If you ask real estate developer Marc Julien about his philosophy of building homes he is pretty steadfast in his resolve and his answer. “There’s only one way to do things and it’s the right way. We are committed to perfection.”

Armed with a wealth of knowledge, Marc founded his company, Marc Julien Homes, seven years ago. Although, when you look at the finished homes -that range from $1 million and up- it seems his experience is infinite. And in a way it is. “When I was a child I had a bulldozer in my sandbox and I was constantly building castles.” That desire to create something beautiful, and meaningful has followed Julien around like a shadow. He started out in the production film business, making American films in Canada. “Film production is about bringing hundreds of people together to achieve one common goal. Building homes is no different. We bring the client’s objectives and the architect’s vision to life through the careful 66 April 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

coordination of our excellent craftsmen.” Julien honed his skills for creating luxury homes while working at his brothers real estate development company Kolter Homes. But it is his desire to create homes that fulfill client’s dreams and aspirations that have garnered him a loyal following. “When people walk into our homes they can feel how solid they are built. The floors are flush- there are no transition strips, because we take the time and skill to make sure that every detail is perfect. Our customers come to us for luxury homes that are individualized for their needs and their real estate dreams.” His clients back up his penchant for perfectionism. “Marc and his team delivered a beautiful, high quality product on time and within budget with first class customer service. It has been an absolute pleasure,” said Alex Warner. Scott Galloway had a similar experience. “Your home is a meaningful project. You need a builder that is uber competent and reeks of integrity. Marc and his team brought both.” One of the reasons for the accolades bestowed upon Julien came from years of experience in varying real estate marketplaces. “We started in a downturn so it forced us to be smart, careful and wise about saving money without sacrificing perfection. This philosophy is built into the DNA of our company. We know where to save money and where to spend it when building a house. We are all in it together because we care.” If you ask Julien about his successful real estate career he will tell you. “This is not just a job for me, it is a passion. I love what I do,

it never feels like work.” The company has a real estate development department that studies the market, acquires the land and then builds a luxury home to fit the area. The Project Management and General Contracting department acquires the land and assembles the team from architects to interior designers. They then manage the construction from conception to completion. Marc Julien Homes recently moved a historic Mission Style home built in 1926 just 15 feet to make way for its rehabilitation. This change will not detract from the homes inherent historical reference point. They are keeping the original wood floors, Dade County Pine construction, and original fireplace. The 1,200-square-foot house will be connected to the original guesthouse, which will add 2,000-square-feet to the dwelling. According to Julien, the home, on NE 5th Court in Delray, will be a brand new house with its original shell. It is easy to tell a Marc Julien Home – they’re distinctive and upbeat with open spaces, splendid views, fabulous foliage, elaborate moldings and windows that bring the outdoor enlightenment indoors. The homes are divinely designed to bring out the joie de vivre in homeowners lifestyles and personalities. All this dedication and passion has led to some new changes at Marc Julien Homes. They recently moved their offices to NW 17 Street where they occupy 4,200-square-feet, up from their former space of 900-squarefeet. They also opened a 1,700-square-feet Kitchen Showroom on the premises so that client’s may pick the kitchen of their dreams

in-house, thus forgoing the use of outside sources for delivery and installation. “Since we are committed to perfection we wanted to offer our clients the seamless reliability of full control on the installation and production quality of our custom kitchens. We have full-time designers that make sure we have preeminent contemporary designs from some of the best names in the business,” said Julien. Currently they carry man made quartz products that resemble stone with a clean look. They also have Caesar stone and contemporary cabinets and countertops that pass the muster for discerning homeowners, whose vision Julien replicates to perfection. “We pass the savings on to our customers now that we have our own kitchen showroom. There are wood finishes, lacquer, high gloss and assorted seamless materials that streamline the process and the serenity of the project.” So far Marc Julien Homes has built over $100 million of real estate in the last seven years. “Our strength is that we deliver a product of superior quality at a reasonable price. We don’t even have a customer service department because we strive for perfection in all phases of building homes.” If you gaze at his website marcjulienhomes.com you can see the magnificence of their homes. They’re thoughtful, serene, and majestic and make the Florida lifestyle a dream come true. DASH TRAVEL By Diane feen

If you think travel agencies have gone the way of the Edsel have a chat with Joel Dash, owner and founder of Dash Travel in Delray Beach.

Joel opened his first travel agency in 1959 in New York and holds the record for being one of the most distinguished travel agencies (and agents) in the country. “I’ve been to 108 countries, seven continents, 50 states and 200 cruise ships,” said Joel, who has also dined with dignitaries, run a “Disco Train” from New York to Montreal and booked the Rolling Stones first trip to the US. To say Joel and his son Jeff are the consummate travel masters is an understatement. They are the travel business rolled into one neatly packaged agency of brilliance and refinement. Both are adamant they sell experiences that last a lifetime. There’s no arguing that statement. “My trip was absolutely magical, beautiful, indulgent and simply perfect!! We had a beyond amazing time! Tuscany Italy and tour - sightseeing, Florence, Venice, Amalfi Coast, private drivers, restaurant reservations – it was all perfect,” said Rachel. Rachel isn’t the only one who praises the astute knowledge and ability of the Dash’s to create magic for travelers. Everyone who puts their travel dreams into the hands of Dash Travel Agency comes out a winner. “If you’re looking to book a trip all you have to do is ask me, I’ve been there,” said Joel. “We make sure you get booked at the right hotels, you get VIP service and added amenities.” When it comes to cruise ships and exotic travel Jeff and Joel can not only make it happen but they can up the ante for a luxurious outcome. . “We can book clients on cruise ships offering additional amenities such as

specialty dining, shore excursions, free gratuities, Wi-Fi and other amenities,” said Joel, an Ohio State graduate. If you want a Ferrari waiting for you in Italy, a villa in Spain or a riverboat cruise down the Nile call the Dash’s. They can make it all happen, whether your dream is to stay in a castle in Spain or a three-bedroom home in Orlando with a pool (that’s less money than a hotel). Though the Internet has changed the landscape of travel – and made some people think they don’t need a travel agent – Jeff

will tell you otherwise. “The Internet is our friend. It gives people a chance to do research and see where they want to go. But we make sure you get accurate valuable information on where you will feel most comfortable and treasured. At no extra cost we are a safety net in case anything goes wrong. We are open seven days a week and available 24/7.” As a matter of fact the first cruise ship excursion to Cuba is May 15th and Dash is taking the lead. “We are booking a group from the Delray Chamber of Commerce on

the June 12th cruise to Cuba. This cruise will be unique – the people, the music – the food. It’s the hottest destination and the best way to go is on a cruise so you are guaranteed quality food and accommodations,” said Jeff. If your bucket list has not been tapped yet then it’s time to start living. There’s a Tuscany Culinary - Wine adventure on October 22nd. The cruise ship (The Oceania) has celebrity chefs that take you to pick out food at the ports and teach you how to prepare the meal on board. Dash can also arrange a trip to Rome, a visit to the Vatican, private touring and sightseeing that will make you think that heaven is indeed at eye level. If you want a luxury world tour it can be arranged as well. There are private yachts to sail on, helicopters to view from and expeditions that will enlighten your mind and your senses to infinite heights. That’s the beauty of calling Dash Travel. They “have been there done that” and know who to call to arrange the same divine experiences for you. “We can get you exclusive restaurant reservations, priority receptions, access to attractions around the world, spa credits and cost savings,” said Jeff. “We can also give you insider tips that will ensure your vacation is the best one imaginable.” Working with Dash Travel is like having your own personal travel concierge because of their experience and connections in the industry. Joel was a founding member (and President) of the Association of Westchester Travel Agents, elected “Travel Agent of the Year” by Travelage Magazine, Director of the Gold Coast Travel Industry in Florida, travel editor for magazines and newspapers and served on numerous prestigious travel industry advisory boards. Currently Joel teaches adult education travel courses at Spanish River High and Atlantic High. Dash also has monthly travel seminars about exciting travel destinations and excursions. As Jeff likes to say, “I’m a travel artist. I will paint whatever vision you have of your perfect vacation and make it happen perfectly. The Internet is good for looking, but Call Dash for Booking.” DASH TRAVEL 504 East Atlantic Avenue Delray Beach 561-498-8439 dashtravelandcruises.com

Just as the City of Delray Beach has evolved in sophistication while still maintaining a laid-back, inviting beach atmosphere, the new construction projects from Azure Development have mirrored that same urban sophistication near the breathtaking beaches of Delray.

Cutting edge builders Rick Caster and Brian Grossberg of Azure Development are developing luxury new construction homes that are unlike any other in Delray Beach. Their latest new constructions projects, Lake Ida Waterfront, Palm Trail Estate and Delray Modern

would find in larger urban cities to Delray Beach,” said Brian Grossberg. “As the city has evolved, we are offering a choice that was not available before. We have more sophisticated buyers now who want large open spaces with more natural light, and we are delivering that with our new construction homes,” added Rick Caster. The Lake Ida Waterfront Estate home is located in Delray’s most desirable, familyfriendly Lake Ida neighborhood at 1320 NW 13 Street; minutes from the beach and the shops and restaurants of Atlantic Avenue. Designed by renowned architect Richard Jones, the home is set on three quarters of an acre with over 100’ of lake frontage on the widest section of Lake Ida. This lakefront estate is the ultimate “activity” house. Tucked away at the end of a private street you arrive at an expansive motor court with four-car garage. From the front entry, your eyes are immediately drawn through the expansive living/dining room to the 55’ long infinity edge pool that appears to flow directly into the lake. Backyard features include

a private beach, “entertainment” pavilion surrounded by water, outdoor summer kitchen, natural gas fire pit, and a 40’ dock for jet skis and boats.

 This home has incredible views throughout and is filled with natural light. The indoor/outdoor living areas blend seamlessly with large expanses of glass and huge pocketing doors opening onto one of the home’s many spacious outdoor loggias.
Other features include high ceilings, a gourmet kitchen and spectacular millwork. Delray Modern Intracoastal is located at 1205 Palm Trail, and sits on a spectacular one of a kind waterfront setting adjacent to a five-acre nature preserve. This very private property with a private dock has stunning preserve and water views of one of the widest sections of the Intracoastal Waterway in Delray. The home features a striking modernist design by award winning architect Jeffrey Silberstein. The two story residence boasts 4,224 square feet under air and 5,931 total square feet and includes 4 bedrooms, 4 and a half baths and garage designed for two cars plus golf cart. The home is flooded with natural light from the south, east and west as well as from the skylights framing the glass railed staircase.

This home features every amenity imaginable including an elevator, floor to ceiling European cabinetry, Sub-Zero and Wolf Appliances, 80’ lap pool, gas fire pit and more. Palm Trail Estate, at 617 Palm Trail Estate, is a Coastal Contemporary Waterfront Estate located on a half-acre lot along the Intracoastal Waterway. Situated in the highly desirable Palm Trail neighborhood, the property measures 100 feet wide by 200 feet deep making it one of the largest properties in East Delray. The rear of the estate faces east and overlooks a four-acre nature preserve, providing an unparalleled degree of serenity and privacy. Boaters will appreciate the brand new 80-foot concrete dock and no-wake zone. The front door opens onto an expansive living room with views across the waterway to the nature preserve. The open floor plan allows each room to flow

effortlessly to the next while the abundance of windows provide plenty of natural light and stunning views of the pool, landscaped grounds and Intracoastal. The expansive living and dining room feature an entire wall of pocket impact glass sliders that showcase the water views and open to the outdoor loggia and infinity edge heated pool and spa. The kitchen has custom floor to ceiling wood cabinetry, natural marble and quartz countertops with waterfall edges, two kitchen islands with two sinks and oversized walk-in pantry with built-in shelving. The spacious family room is open to the kitchen and features vanishing corner sliding glass doors that open to two separate loggias and the pool. Revolutionizing What a Small Business Could Be

Spodak Dental Group By Darien Arden

{

It all starts by defining “success.” If you asked Dr. Craig Spodak 20 years ago what he wanted to do with his life, he couldn’t tell you. He had an easy path to follow if he wanted, which was to be the third generation of dentists in the Spodak family.

The open environment allows for a greater patientdoctor relationship, team spirit and less anxiety. 76 April 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

He was familiar with dentistry as he grew up around it all his life, but wasn’t sure it was the route he wanted to go, until he thought about the possibilities or “what could be.” Dr. Myles Spodak, Dr. Craig’s father, founded Spodak Dental Group in Delray Beach back in 1976 on West Atlantic Avenue. He trekked his wife Arlene, son Craig and daughter Sharon from New City, NY and worked tirelessly to begin his business. Arlene ran the front desk and Dr. Myles was the only dentist, and it remained that way for many years. Fast forward to the late 1990s. Dr. Craig was in college and Dr. Myles decided to renovate his office. This was the light bulb for Dr. Craig. At that moment, Dr. Craig realized the potential of being a dentist. It wasn’t just working as the only general dentist in a confined office, following the same practices from years past and thinking small. It was creating something new and different, something that would span the next 40 years and hopefully even longer.

He made the decision to join his father in his practice in 1998, right after he graduated from Tufts University, with one goal: to change the experience of “it.” “I realized that I had the opportunity to really change the field of dentistry,” said Dr. Craig, who inherited the practice from his father in 2006. “Dentistry follows medicine and I wanted to be the Cleveland Clinic of dentistry. There is no reason why we shouldn’t have all general and specialty dentists under one roof, an in-house lab, several hygienists and the newest technology, in addition to taking care of the planet, our community and our team members.” After all, Dr. Craig doesn’t limit his thinking. He spent years fascinating about a dental facility that didn’t yet exist in the world. One that would feature an open and welcoming environment that not only comforts patients and inspires the team, but also breaks down the barrier of the doctor-patient relationship. The 13,000 square feet, LEED Gold Certified, state-of-the-art, biophilic facility

A lab technician is able to design and fabricate a crown in only one hour, eliminating the need for temporaries and multiple visits.

opened its doors December 2013 and enabled Dr. Craig and his team to continue to pave the way for transcending the patient experience. The entire facility was built with the patient in mind and every corner of the office has a purpose. Six healing gardens surround the facility to comfort patients and offer an area of respite before, during and after their appointment. Floor-to-ceiling windows in every one of the 15 operatories and the main space allow for natural light to pour in, which has been proven to reduce patient pain and stress during recovery. There are also no doors on the operatories and the doctors’ desks are in the main space, which fosters greater communication between not only patients and their dentist, but also between the team of 10 general and specialty dentists. Sustainability is also another main goal for Dr. Craig as he took great strides to only positively impact the environment. He installed two cisterns that collect 14,000 gallons of rain water that are used for supplemental irrigation for fruit trees, an herb and vegetable garden and tropical shade garden. He even built a lake under the parking lot, through the use of a Storm Tech system, that captures and infiltrates up to 209,000 gallons of rainwater back into our environment. This parking lot and system is one of the first of its kind in South Florida and will help model new standards and expectations for how water is managed for both quantity and quality in our region. The inside of the building is also special because of the team culture. The nearly 50 doctors, clinical and administration team members all share a unique vision, and that is to improve the community one patient at a time. “My overall goal is to create a better community. If all small Delray businesses would incorporate some pieces of what we’re doing and what we’ve done, we can really have a large impact,” said Dr. Craig. “I would love for people to copy what we’re doing.”

The entire facility, through the use of floor-to-ceiling windows and Solatubes, is 85 percent natural lighting.

Dr. Craig also creates connections with local businesses that have a strong culture, including the Delray Downtowner, Farmer Jay and Delivery Dudes, among others. They all exist beyond making money, and strive to better their community, whether it be through green practices, personal development among team members, giving back to the community, or just lending a helping hand. “Success, for me, is taking care of people. It’s that simple,” said Dr. Craig. “All small business owners should define their version of success and the necessary steps to achieve it because it’s what identifies their company and, ultimately, themselves.” Spodak Dental Group has a very distinct strategy of achieving success. Their noble cause is to change the world through the power of compassion, and they do so by a set of 12 individual core values, which include pursuing growth and learning, building a positive team and family spirit, being humble, and more.

“Our core values guide our daily thoughts and behavior, said Dr. Craig. “They are the values we live by, and ultimately they enable us to provide our patients the highest caliber of comprehensive dental care while consistently exceeding their expectations.” “We must exist to revolutionize the status-quo experience; the ‘it’,” said Dr. Craig. “If we focus on our culture, philosophy, economic and civic responsibility, everything will fall into place. I have been working on defining my purpose since I was a child and it feels rewarding to not only know it, but to be able to live it every day.” From a small business owner to a large, above-the-line thinker, Dr. Craig continues to pave the way for all small businesses, with a simple goal to better the world. And change the world he will. Spodak Dental Group 3911 West Atlantic Avenue, Delray Beach 561-498-0050 www.SpodakDental.com

Concours is just a fancy name for an exhibition or contest, usually of fine vehicles.

The Boca Raton Concours D’Elegance is the very best of the best. The tenth annual staging of this automotive dreamland was held February 19-21 in Boca Raton, with the glittering finale held Sunday on the golf fairways of the Boca Raton Resort and Club. Vintage car and motorcycle owners from all over the USA flocked to the Boca Raton Concours, which has emerged as one of the most prestigious car shows in America. Even though the admission was a hefty $75, to benefit Boys and Girls Clubs of Broward County, the event was packed to 78 April 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

capacity. Returning as celebrity host was television host, stand-up comedian and noted car collector, Jay Leno, who hosted the very first Concours. “I’m not a sports guy, but this is my football for me,” commented Leno, who entertained at the Saturday banquet. “You could call this the Super Bowl of cars.” In all there were more than 200 cars and motorcycles, with such rarities as a 1948 Tucker; one of only 51 revolutionary, rearengined cars ever made. A 1927 right-hand drive Packard touring was purported to be a car of Argentine dictator Juan Peron. Among the motorcycles were two legendary British classics; a 1952 Vincent Black Shadow and a 1938 Brough Superior. The Boca Raton Concours D’Elegance was organized by Rick and Rita Case, whose Case Automotive Group has been the main corporate sponsor every year. DELRAY POINTE Not Business As Usual by diane feen

There comes a time in every business person’s life when they realize that a beautiful uplifting environment increases productivity. It can improve job performance and increase workers sense of well being.

That’s what commercial real estate broker John Jaspert wants prospective businesses to know about the Class “A” office space currently available at Delray Pointe, which is on Federal Hwy just North of Linton Blvd and South of Atlantic Avenue. This modern Florida style two-story building houses Office Depot and City National Bank but has a second floor 3,500-square-foot office space available right now. This centrally located Class “A” commercial real estate masterpiece is the product of its original owner-builder. That’s why it was custom designed with wood floors, private marble bathroom, crown moldings, granite countertops, 9-foot ceilings, private entrance and elevator, modern kitchen, large conference room and top of the line fixtures. There’s a reason this office space has such a high-end construction mentality. “The former tenant here was the original developer of the property. He used it as his office until recently. This gracious space is perfect for a small law firm, accountant or any professional services

company,” said Jaspert, VP at CBRE. The Delray Pointe location is so terrific that it inspired an established New York real estate firm to invest in South Florida property. “We recently bought two properties in South Florida. We think that Delray Beach is a great place to live and work, and we knew the architecture of this building would appeal to high-end tenants,” said Alex Cornfeld, of ABC Properties in New York City. Cornfeld has a point. This central location is a stone’s throw away from the new classy colorful shopping center called Delray Place. It houses some of the country’s most coveted retailers - Trader Joe’s, The Fresh

Market, Stein Mart, Pier 1 Imports, Habit Burger, Broken Egg Café and more. Delray Pointe is ten blocks from Atlantic Avenue and has Monument Signage from both North and South sides of Federal Highway. Because of this your business will get exposure from people driving south to Delray Beach or going North from Boca Raton. “The complete renovation of the Federal Hwy- Linton Blvd corridor has made this neighborhood where all the action is and where everyone wants to be. In downtown Delray Beach parking is scarce but at Delray Pointe you get plenty of parking and great security. We feel the synergy of all this up-

beat new retail space (and abundance of restaurants) makes it the perfect office location for any business,” said Jaspert. There are other amenities that this new tenant will enjoy once they move in. There is a private elevator, back-up generator, hurricane impact glass with extra reinforcement, impressive conference room with dropped retro lighting and high-end amenities in the master bathroom suite (there are three bathrooms total). The master bathroom has a shower, marble flooring, high-end fixtures and designer touches. Delray Pointe, which was built in 2004, is so visually impactful that it won the Site Plan Review and Appearance Board (SPRAB) Award from Delray Beach. This award is given each year to property owners and their design teams for projects that have significantly contributed to the beauty of the community through superior design. Another feature that appeals to smart business people is that there are two points of ingress-egress along the west side of the property for southbound US-1 traffic. There’s one point of ingress-egress along the East side for Northbound US-1 traffic. It’s also easy-access to the highway (I95) that connects all of South Florida quite conveniently. This highway can be accessed from Linton Blvd or Atlantic Avenue, depending on the direction you are traveling. There is also a long-term lease available for the stability of your business. “The builder of Delray Pointe made everything classy and top notch. The front of the building is aesthetically beautiful and the signage is excellent for maximum exposure. It also has crown molding on the ceilings and chair rail molding to give it a modern definition,” said Jaspert, who is the exclusive commercial broker for the property. Delray Pointe has been called a landmark “Flat Iron” style building with a central presence, literally. It faces both the northbound and southbound lanes of

Federal Highway, which is one of the most heavily traveled streets serving the dense population,” said Jaspert. “It is also ideally situated 0.4 miles North of the popular Linton Boulevard retail corridor and 1.0 miles South of the most popular street in Palm Beach County - Atlantic Avenue.” Jaspert also said the space is ideally upscale and in move-in condition. “Move right in without significant modifications. The commercial property has been impeccably maintained and is turnkey for the right business. It’s perfect for an insurance company or law firm because of its Maximum Exposure and Signage from both sides of Federal Highway.” The reason ABC Properties bought this Stainless steel and granite upgraded kitchen

upscale commercial space is because of its inherent worthiness. “With its stunning beaches, vibrant downtown nightlife, excellent neighborhoods and abundance of cultural activities, the City of Delray Beach is a truly unique municipality of unparalleled beauty and quality of life,” said Cornfeld. The new owner, ABC Properties, is an established real estate company in New York City. Founded in 1976 they have been in the real estate business for 40 years. DELRAY POINTE 1110-1120 S. The Answer to All your Needs in Property Integrity Service

Above & Beyond Home Watch Services of the Palm Beaches BY diane feen

He is the quintessential owner of well respected Home Watch Services Company in Palm Beach County. If you think that this profession is just a matter of checking to make sure the newspapers are not piling up by your door or turning on your faucets, think again. “When you are away your security alarm system will not tell you if your roof is leaking or if your air conditioning system has gone out. These issues lead to huge problems, such as mold and home flooding. We have all heard and seen instances where people have left the country and squatters moved into their homes,” said Block, an accomplished businessman. Often times snowbirds ask neighbors to watch their homes while they are out of town, but if you ask Block that’s not the best solution. “Do you really trust your neighbors and do you really want them snooping around your home?” Block also knows people who left their home in the hands of a neighbor who drove their car while they were away (back and forth to work - putting 4000 extra miles on it). That’s the beauty of a company like Above & Beyond Home Watch Services. They take full control of any situation while you are away and rectify it before you get back. If there is a plumbing problem they can call a plumber and have it repaired while you’re away. They also have a division that prepares your home for your arrival “Butler Style.” They’ll stock your refrigerator, order fresh flowers, fill the liquor cabinet, turn down the thermostat or have your car tuned up and running in top shape before your arrival. 82 April 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Not only do they monitor your home as if it were their own but they also offer concierge services, home maintenance, vehicle services, housekeeping and anything else you might need. Do you want tickets to a sporting event or theater? Do you need a ride to the airport? Don’t worry; the folks at Above & Beyond Home Watch Services of the Palm Beaches are on the case. Just ask Camille of Nova Scotia. “Bless you - as always - for taking care of our home. The place looks great and your team did a great job pressure washing our driveway. The dinner was also spectacular. We love the way you attend to every detail and the way you take care of our home.”

Marcus Block is selling peace of mind. Not the kind that comes with yoga stretches or meditation but something far more comprehensive.

The reason Block knows the pitfalls of leaving an empty home or condo unsupervised by professionals is because he is a homeowner and knows what can happen when you’re away. “I was out of the country in Central America several years ago and hurricanes were hitting Florida. It was almost impossible to find someone to put up our hurricane shutters (phone systems were down and the electricity was out). Whether you’re at your primary residence or on vacation, this is something you do not want to worry about like I had to.” Above & Beyond Home Watch Services offers affordable prices for the peace of mind of knowing your home and belong-

ings are safe and in good working order. “When you hire us you give a little but you get a lot in return.” They also offer party planning, dinner arrangements, reservations for Spas, Tee times, Charter fishing or Party Events. “We will have your car waiting for you at the airport or arrange for any of your transportation needs. We do all this so you can enjoy every moment of your vacation and arrive at your home with the lights on and the air conditioning set to your perfect temperature.” Above and Beyond Home Watch Services can provide home inspections once a week, bi-weekly or more often if the need arises. They monitor the air conditioning, electrical system, plumbing, security, appliances, roofing and inspection of windows and screens for intrusion and water damage. “We take great care to make sure everything in your home is in good working order. We protect the integrity of your home and make sure that all of your visits will be happy, safe and comfortable. Our services are very reasonable and we look forward to servicing you. Following Your Real Estate Dream

CAPE COD KATE { By Diane FeeN

Philosophers and life coaches advise us to “Follow our Dream.” That’s why so many people have moved to Delray Beach. Kate Rimkus is one of them.

Though Rimkus only spends the winter months in Delray Beach, she gets the intrinsic beauty and elegant (yet casual) lifestyle of our inimitable small town. That’s why she is the ultimate pied piper for her summer home base of Cape Cod. “Cape Cod has the same lifestyle that Delray Beach has with the same beautiful beaches, award-winning theater and great restaurants. Why not follow the lifestyle you love (in the summer) to Cape Cod,” said Rimkus, a realtor with top rated real estate firm Robert Paul Properties. Let’s face it, when the humidity index hits the stratosphere in South Florida many flee our scorching sidewalks. Some head to the mountains, others to Long Island. But Rimkus has another idea. Why not spend your summers on Cape Cod? “If you enjoy the winters here, you’ll love the summers on Cape Cod. Both places have an informal lifestyle and outstanding beauty. On the Cape you can wear shorts to play golf or go to dinner. You don’t have to worry about impressing your neighbors,” said Rimkus, who is not only a Cape Cod resident, but is 84 April 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

also a real estate investor there as well. If you’re not familiar with Cape Cod then now is the time to learn about this treasured peninsula with 15 different towns, 300 miles of shoreline located in southeastern Massachusetts. The Cape Cod lifestyle – and natural untouched beauty – is the reason that presidents, poets, artists, and the Hollywood elite flock there.

The towns are unique yet all have blissful beaches, impressive architecture, aweinspiring golf courses, sand dunes, art filled enclaves, top tier restaurants and a calming effect that will smooth over the rough edges of your psyche without pharmaceuticals. The names may sound familiar - there’s Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, Chatham, Wellfleet, Provincetown, Truro, Woods Hole,

etc. Each has their own distinct charm and attractions, yet they all have reverence for their historical reference points, mid-century modern design and unspoiled natural beauty. “The summers and fall in Cape Cod are idyllic – there are golf courses that rival the majestic views in Scotland, baseball leagues, horseback riding, outdoor concert venues and festivals, high speed catamaran rides to Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, world class fishing and great surfing (and Sand Dunes) at Nauset Beach,” said Rimkus. If you decide you want the idyllic lifestyle of Cape Cod you can find everything you need to know about buying a house there from Rimkus. She’s happy to meet with you or guide you via phone or email. Rimkus has over a decade of experience selling homes (and referring rentals) in Cape Cod. She knows the different nuances of each town and can guide you toward finding your paradise in the Cape. “I know the pitfalls that can happen and things that people may

not know. Some things can be fixed and others cannot. You need to know the long-term consequences when buying a home. There are also excellent opportunities for investment property,” said the Delray Beach snowbird, who takes pride in offering luxury service to clients and realtors who refer clients to her. Cape Cod is only a three and a half hour flight to Boston with limo service, busses and ferries to take you to the Cape and Islands. If you want to rent for a shorter stay Rimkus can refer you to the right place at the right time. “I provide luxury service for world class lifestyles. I do the research and as a buyers’ representative I have a fiduciary responsibility to be loyal to my clients. I take my role as a realtor seriously and make sure clients are happy with their decisions.” There is so much to do in Cape Cod you don’t have to worry about a case of the blahs or boredom. It’s also a family friendly environment with infinite educational and spirited activities for children. There are lakes stocked with fresh fish, old-fashioned Fourth of July parades, canoe and kayak rentals and plenty of bike trails. Don’t forget about charming and festive fueled Provincetown where culture reigns supreme and fine-dining is always in full swing. One thing for sure, there are architectural and culinary gems everywhere in Cape Cod. Cape Cod Kate is ready to make your Cape Cod dreams a reality. “Don’t give up your lifestyle because the weather gets too hot in Delray, MOVE IT TO CAPE COD.” Kate Rimkus 617-680-6693 kate@capecodkate.com kate@robertpaul.com

Delray Beach Visits Sister CITY in Italy

{

BY STEPHEN CHRISANTHUS

Representatives for the City of Delray Beach were treated like family by their sister city Pesaro, Italy on their most recent visit in efforts to continue to build their relationship and facilitate a cultural and economic exchange.

Stephen Chrisanthus and Stephanie Immelman of the Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative met with Pesaro city officials and attended cultural events in an effort to strengthen their sister city ties and keep the wheels turning on a cultural exchange initiative which was put in motion almost a year ago. “Our relationship has come a long way since inception and we look forward to some great collaborations in the near future”, says Stephanie Immelman, Executive Director of the Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative. Project Manager Francis Gallito of Pesaro, and officials on both sides have helped move the relationship along through meetings and visits throughout the year. The sister city became official when Delray Beach Mayor Cary Glickstein and Vice Mayor of Pesaro Daniele Vimini signed the necessary documents this past December at the Greater Delray Beach

composer Gioachino Rossini who was from Pesaro. There were events and performances celebrating his music throughout the city. The Delray group attended a special performance at the Teatro Rossini of The Barber of Seville, a private concert at Luciano Pavarotti’s house graciously hosted by his daughter, as well as a number of other cultural events and attractions. “It really was an amazing week of culture. They were literally singing from the street balconies. We are lucky to have a sister city with such a rich history,” explained Stephen Chrisanthus. Both cities are currently working on an art exchange collaborating with Old School Square. The plan is to create an Italian themed event surrounding their collection. Delray Beach would then send a cultural exhibit their way at a later time. The first exchange actually occurred on this visit when the Delray delegates presented Matteo Ricci, the Mayor of Pesaro, a painting from Mayor Glickstein as a gift.

April Fools Traditions Popularized BY History.com Staff

{

On this day in 1700, English pranksters begin popularizing the annual tradition of April Fools’ Day by playing practical jokes on each other.

Although the day, also called All Fools’ Day, has been celebrated for several centuries by different cultures, its exact origins remain a mystery. Some historians speculate that April Fools’ Day dates back to 1582, when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar, as called for by the Council of Trent in 1563. People who were slow to get the news or failed to recognize that the start of the new year had moved to January 1 and continued to celebrate it during the last week of March through April 1 became the butt of jokes and hoaxes. These included having paper fish placed on their backs and being referred to as “poisson d’avril” (April fish), said to symbolize a young, easily caught fish and a gullible person. Historians have also linked April Fools’ Day to ancient festivals such as Hilaria, which was celebrated in Rome at the end of March and involved people dressing up in disguises. There’s also speculation that April Fools’ Day was tied to the vernal equinox, or first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, when Mother Nature fooled people with changing, unpredictable weather. April Fools’ Day spread throughout Britain during the 18th century. In Scotland, the tradition became a two-day event, starting with “hunting the gowk,” in which people were sent on phony errands (gowk is a word for cuckoo bird, a symbol for fool)

and followed by Tailie Day, which involved pranks played on people’s derrieres, such as pinning fake tails or “kick me” signs on them. In modern times, people have gone to great lengths to create elaborate April Fools’ Day hoaxes. Newspapers, radio and TV stations and Web sites have participated in the April 1 tradition of reporting outrageous fictional claims that have fooled their audiences. In 1957, the BBC reported that Swiss farmers were experiencing a record spaghetti crop and showed footage of people harvesting noodles from trees; numerous viewers were fooled. In 1985, Sports Illustrated tricked many of its readers when it ran a made-up article about a rookie pitcher named Sidd Finch who could throw a fastball over 168 miles per hour. In 1996, Taco Bell, the fast-food restaurant chain, duped people when it

announced it had agreed to purchase Philadelphia’s Liberty Bell and intended to rename it the Taco Liberty Bell. In 1998, after Burger King advertised a “LeftHanded Whopper,” scores of clueless customers requested the fake sandwich.

Architect And Superwoman

THUY SHUTT By Diane Feen

{

Photo by melissa korman

When motivational speaker Tony Robbins talks about overcoming obstacles, setting goals and living up to one’s highest potential he must have envisioned Thuy Shutt.

Shutt, who is currently the Assistant Director of the Delray CRA, is a licensed architect with expertise in urban planning and redevelopment. But if you glance at her resume and qualification specs you might need an interpreter. That’s because words like land entitlement, urban and site design, real estate acquisition, structural-wind loads, proforma preparation, Design Guidelines Ordinance and Senior Land Entitlement Manager are sprinkled throughout her resume. She knows so much about codes, statutes, architecture, land development and government that it’s amazing her head is not swollen from informational overload. But, quite to the contrary, Shutt is feminine, charming and can delightfully entrance you while talking about sustainable growth, code enforcement, storm water retention or the benefits of long term revitalization. Not many people can do that. Shutt has an inner time clock that ticks with the regularity of the heart beat of a champion tennis player. She has climbed the ladders, held onto the ropes and seen the clear sky from all vantage points. But it hasn’t always been easy. “We had to leave Vietnam (where I was born) when I was seven-years-old. We escaped by cargo plane, went to a refugee camp in Guam and ended up living on a military base in Arkansas.” Shutt’s family eventually settled in Northern Virginia, but there were some difficult moments. “I was in the third grade when I started school in the US, but I didn’t know any English. I learned by watching TV.” Though they had a comfortable life in Vietnam before they left for America, Shutt remembers leaving their homeland with just a few dollars and a bag of clothing. That experience only intensified her desire to succeed and accomplish goals that challenged both her spirit and her intellect. “Human beings have the uncanny ability to start over. You have to look at your priorities, get advice from others and make decisions on the best route to get there.”

April 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Shutt certainly has a golden compass. She also has an incredible drive and steely determination to accomplish what most people would think was super human. She started out studying mechanical engineering and ended up graduating from Virginia Tech with a Bachelors degree in Architecture. Shutt’s move to South Florida was as fortuitous as it was destiny. “Bob Currie’s father was the first Dean of the Architecture school at Virginia Tech and I was recruited by Bob’s firm for my externship in architecture.” While at Currie’s firm she worked on some of Delray’s most iconic buildings – The Atlantic Avenue Bridge Tender House and the Old School Square cultural complex. She also passed the Architecture Board Exams that consisted of seven days of testing and a 12-hour drawing portion. Stretching her intellectual muscle is only part of this woman’s incredible willpower and curiosity. She has studied Tae Kwon Do for 15 years and is a 4th Degree Black Belt. It may have started as a way to bond with her two sons (20-year-old Drake and 17-year-old Mason) but it has become a passion for her now. “Thuy has amazing self discipline and patience. She trains so hard and continues to be a high achiever. She not only helps us as a volunteer but is a role model for others. Everyone loves her,” said Young Sung, wife of her esteemed teacher Jin Chung at the Ko Am Mu Do Federation. Skill and determination have not only earned her a Black Belt but also an esteemed space in the field of design and architecture. She has worked at the Delray CRA with three executive directors (Chris Brown, Diane Colonna and Jeff Costello), was a Principal Site Planner for Palm Beach County Planning, Zoning & Building Dept, a Senior Land Entitlement Project Manager for Centex Homes and an Assistant Director for Westgate/Belvedere Homes Community Redevelopment Agency. It is uncanny that this woman, who admits to planning everything in her life, ended up dedicating her career to the planning of something as sacred as real estate. “Design is a noble profession. It’s science woven

in with aesthetics. It is rewarding to provide one of the two basic necessities in life - food and shelter - and be involved with private and public projects from acquisition and public engagement to sales.” It’s also an honor to meet someone who has such extensive ties to the community and is always helping others. Perhaps her selflessness is part and parcel of her childhood. “One of my role models was my mother. She was a language interpreter in Vietnam but became a seamstress in America so she could be at

home with her children.” Knowing the value of education (science and math specifically) was an integral part of Shutt’s childhood. That’s why she takes pride in her membership in the WiA (Women in Architecture) and their annual events that support young girls leadership and empowerment skills. She also supports the Global Business Development Center, Open Arms and AVDA. Though she’s all business when sitting at her desk, Shutt has recently taken up riding a motorcycle. Add that to her passion for cooking,

playing violin, exercising, making stain glass artistry (and being a wife to lawyer Brian Shutt) and you have an enigma of great magnitude. “Thuy is one of the smartest, caring, and most dedicated women I know. After we finished the downtown master plan she worked tirelessly on creating design guidelines that allowed for smart growth and a vibrant downtown--she and her husband Brian played important roles in Delray’s revitalization,” said Diane Colonna, Senior Redevelopment Administrator with RMA. www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com | April 2016

CONTE’S ITALIAN DELI & GOURMET MARKET By Diane Feen photos by melissa korman

{

There’s a freshness and upbeat spark about the new kid on the block – Conte’s Italian Deli & Gourmet Market.

114 April 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Linguine pasta with sun-dried tomatoes and broccoli

Since they moved into Pineapple Grove owner Robert Conte has been doing what he does best – creating fresh dishes reminiscent of your grandmother’s homemade epicurean delights (if she was Italian). But Bob is no amateur to the food business. As a matter of fact he’s been in it his whole life. He started out in New York and worked at the famed Tavern on the Green. When he moved to Florida he owned and operated a successful restaurant in Ft. Lauderdale called Regalo. One might think that he would slow down but Bob is not one to sit on the sidelines and let someone else capture the essence of his trade. “I’ve been in this business for 30 years. I enjoy working and introducing people to homemade Italian food they will enjoy,” said the mild mannered gentleman with the predilection for food that’s fresh and homemade. That is probably the reason he teamed up with another veteran of the gourmet food business – Thomas. His partner and chef has worked at some of the most influential gourmet deli’s in South Florida and has shown his Italian roots go as deep as Bob’s. What would an Italian Deli be without offering homemade chicken parmesan, meat-

balls, breaded eggplant stacks, lasagna with meat, cheese or vegetables and eggplant rollatini? That’s why Conte’s has a glass case just overflowing with delicious prepared Italian specialties to tickle your fancy. One of our favorites is their baked organic chicken with breadcrumbs and herbs and the delicious baked organic chicken marinated in Italian Vinaigrette. If you are on the path toward living life in the fast yet healthy lane they have you covered as well. Their fresh grilled vegetables will keep you fueled for any task at hand and come in all varieties. Try their grilled zucchini, asparagus, yellow and red peppers and squash. The best part about this new Gourmet Italian Deli is that they change their dishes on a daily basis. Bob has laid claim to the fact that they have over 100 different dishes in their culinary repertoire. Some days you will find fresh homemade Manicotti that just oozes delight bursting with ricotta cheese and herbs and other days you’ll find flavorful fresh linguini with garlic, olive oil and parsley. But man (or woman) cannot live on fresh cheesy, delicious Italian dishes all the time so Bob created a division of labor. There are cold salads such as artichoke salad, assorted pasta salads, sausage and peppers, roasted red peppers, asiago pasta, giant white beans, mozzarella and tomato, stuffed grape leaves and health salad. They also have cold and hot deli sandwiches filled with Boars Head deli meats and assorted toppings. The Chicken Little comes with grilled chicken, provolone, bacon, tomato and mayo garlic spread. The Wedge comes with turkey, ham, bacon, lettuce, tomato and honey mustard. There are plenty of freshly made sandwiches to fill any craving you have – and if you don’t see one that makes you giddy they’ll make one for you. If you want a hearty sandwich, try their Long Islander with roast beef, turkey, Swiss cheese, lettuce and tomato. Light vinaigrette marinated organic chicken

Conte’s Deli plays a few different tunes in this upbeat airy location. They have a freezer case filled with popular homemade soups. Who has time to start from scratch to make soup these days? Not many people. That’s why Bob and Thomas stock fresh Pasta Fagioli, Italian Wedding Soup, Minestrone, Lentil, New England and Manhattan Claim Chowder, Pea Soup, Cream Spinach and Tomato Basil Soup. If you have an inkling for a dish of mussels and don’t know when the craving will strike, get their frozen Mussels. They also have frozen Ravioli, Stuffed Shells and Manicotti. Since this is a real Italian Gourmet Deli they specialize in fresh packaged Cheeses and assorted fresh Italian grated cheeses. There’s Champagne Cheddar, Reggiano, Mancheco, Imported Provolone, Brie and more. Since sausage is part of this heritage and hallmark they have sweet and spicy dry cured fresh Sopressata sausage imported from Italy. Nearby are juicy olives – Kalamata, Sicilian, cracked garlic, hot oil cured and more. With all the romance of traditional Italian flavors and sauces one would be remiss if they didn’t have a full selection of Italian wines. So that’s what Bob has done. He

stocks all types of Italian wines that pair perfectly with the homemade pasta (packaged to take home), cheeses, crackers, prepared dishes, salads, sandwiches and breads. There’s Brunello, Valpolicella, Sant Angelus and chiantis just to name a few. They not only have organic private label first cold pressed olive oil but their desserts include Bob’s homemade Italian Cheesecake (you’ll love the crust) and luscious Tiramisu. Conte’s Gourmet Deli has a counter and chairs if you want to eat inside. If not, you can take it with you to work or home. They also specialize in catering events. “Let us cater your next affair. With a little advance notice there is little we can’t do. We’ll customize your menu and promise that your event will be a memorable one. Our gourmet chefs have over 40 years experience. We offer catering for any occasion, large or small. We accept telephone and online orders as well,” said Bob. Come to where Italy is revered and the food is made fresh daily on the premises. How Is Nutritional Balance in Pet Foods Truly Achieved?

A

re you confused when you are told as a pet parent that you are incapable of providing your pets with a home prepared meal? Pet food companies and the veterinarians they train have led us to believe that only highly processed, chemically enhanced “complete and balanced” commercially manufactured food is an acceptable diet. If that were true, why do the pets you see at the dog park, on your pet stroll or at the veterinarian’s office look so different than those on pet food packaging or in commercials? After all, don’t they preach that it’s these “nutritious” foods that will promote and maintain your pet’s optimal health as you pay for yet another treatment at the vet? The truth is that over the past 50 years we have seen the ups and downs in pet health. We have watched as we changed from feeding dogs and cats a primarily carnivore diet of meat and other fresh home prepared foods to a mixture of kibble with canned or our meat to a kibble only diet. In that span I have also witnessed an explosion in the cost of veterinary care to treat allergies, diabetes, cancer, dental disease, hormone issues, parasite problems and more which were unheard of fifty years ago. The current growth of the commercial pet food industry has created an extreme abundance of chemicals in our pets’ bodies and as a result has become a major factor

in our pet’s health problems. Food is the foundation of a healthy body in all forms of life. Plants and animals thrive when they receive proper natural nutrients they need to grow and reproduce. The best forms of these nutrients come from the earth, in their most primal forms. It is referred in many studies as the vital cycle of life. This is where the balance begins. Food is not only the source of nutrients but also a vehicle to transport harmful toxins, dead and diseased cells and unusable waste out of the body. In the case of our carnivorous dogs and cats, the species specific ideal diet would be what they would eat in the wild, specifically other animals. That provides variety of different raw meat and other animal based items such as eggs, fish and birds. By eating a natural rotation of available “clean” foods, they actually achieve the healthy nutritional balance of vitamins, nutrients, minerals, enzymes and pathogens that their dynamic body requires. In a natural world, they crave and seek those foods as needed through a variety of foods that provide essential nutritional profiles. When you have “real” food, animals do not require synthetic flavors to entice them into eating foods or chemically added vitamins for fitness. We need to source only the highest quality natural foods that are fresh and packed with

natural nutrients such as pastured poultry, grass finished livestock and clean water fish. Along with those foods, add micronutrients by sourcing natural herbs to create what they would get from consuming for example pond water with algae or a puddle sitting in a patch of dandelions or other herbs that are actually healthy botanical teas. Nature provides all the nutrients, enzymes, minerals and vitamins needed for optimal health. As far as portion control, when to feed and the variety of real foods, there are many qualified sources and professionals that can guide you on how to provide the nutritional balance through a species specific, all natural, rotational diet. The confusion is gone. You can source the foods that will provide balanced nutrition that your pets will love as we have for ourselves by just following what nature intended. As always, we’re here to help as we share our knowledge, support and guidance in providing our own specific products and meal plans. Bill Piechocki, nutritionist and Dr. Diane Sudduth, DVM are partners in Fiesta Pet Deli in Pompano Beach, FL, and are co-hosts of the PetHealthCafe.com radio show. 40 years in the animal field has provided us unparallel vision and information which we pass to our clients on a daily basis. ARTS ║ Beyond the Business Card

Throughout the nation local chambers of commerce strive to strengthen the business interests of their communities, but The Greater Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce has reached beyond conventional methods and fostered a number of creative avenues that could very well change what it means to be a Chamber, and drive business to the next generation. This series will not only take a look inside what this innovative chamber is doing but into the interesting people who are doing it. We are going beyond the business card.

By Stephen Chrisanthus

The Greater Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce offers many different avenues to engage with the community. The most exclusive of these avenues is the Chairman’s Club. This premier membership level is comprised of CEOs, community trustees and corporate leaders who participate in networking and VIP events. The Chairman’s Club lunches are a favorite amongst members. Here they get to meet with people you don’t see every day, get the latest information from the region and have real time to connect. Being able to meet with political and business leaders impacting Delray Beach, Palm Beach County and the state, in a private setting is a real benefit. On top of the distinguished members who attend, there are also special guests from government, sports, technology, higher education and entrepreneurship. This past luncheon presidential historian, professor and author Dr. Robert Watson spoke about the national election.

He Said/She Said:

Prelude to a first date By Robert V and Marie T

{

So we have decided to see if we can practice what we preach. We (He and She) will be going on a first date. We intend to chronicle every step and misstep, every adherence to, as well as violation of, our dating axioms and every dreadfully awkward moment of silence.

He Said

Background. SHE is hot. Rumor has it that she was once the cover girl for this very magazine. She is younger than I am and looks even younger than that. I’m sure I will get the “uncle daddy” stink eye from people when we are out. I love it! The rules of engagement (as I see them). 1. On every first date, you do not schedule dinner. You schedule a short meeting for coffee or something very casual. Nobody wants to sit through a meal not talking or looking at each other. I did that every night with my ex for 12 years, I don’t need to relive it. 2. No alcohol. Judgements and vision do not need to be clouded when getting to know someone. 3. Come prepared. Ask questions and be a good listener. Since I already know a few things about her, I have ammunition. Facebook is also a tremendous source of material. 4. Don’t be pretentious. I am renting a Yugo to drive up to the meeting place in. I ordered a Swatch on eBay and I am pulling my Members Only jacket out of mothballs. That’s right, I can only go up from here. Think of the relief when I pull up to our second date driving a new (ish) Prius, sporting a Timex and wearing matching socks. I will be the catch I never was on the first date. 5. Don’t expect to be physical. In an act of ultimate hypocrisy, all men want first date PDA, but then when it’s over we think she’s too loose. In order to preclude her falling head over heels in love with me and having my babies, I’m not going to shave my back before the date. Nervous? Yes. But I am taking one for the team. Stay tuned, we will tell you about THE DATE next month and then debrief the fol130 April 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

lowing month. *Dear Editor, can I expense this date, including valet parking the Yugo?

She Said:

Ok. He asked me out. Strictly for the purpose of this article...hmmm... I can tell you that He talks a big game, but can he deliver? My recon tells me he’s an Alpha male, father, successful entrepreneur, a pillar in the community, and a philanthropist. He’s very fit, tall, and just a little older than me - PERFECT! Right? Well...looks good on paper at least. We all know that you never know who will show up at your date. So here is my dating “plan” (practicing what I preach): 1. I agree to a short casual “meet” date. Translation: coffee. Nothing too pretentious, just a nice place where we can talk and keep it low pressure. I certainly DO NOT want to commit to a dinner date! What if I can’t stand him? 2. Wardrobe. Ugh. What to wear, what to wear?! A group text with my trusted girlfriends and a bunch of outfit selfies helped me decide. I settled on jeans, booties, and a loose but pretty blouse. I’m trying to keep it

in a casual “getting to know you” vibe. 3. Conversation. I have this!!! He is a very interesting person (thank you google, Facebook) so I have many things I can ask about. I also have a few “fun facts” about myself that very few people know - so if the conversation stalls or gets weird, I can always use one of those to keep it going. 4. Know when to end it. I know this sounds awful, but there should be a limit (at least in your mind) to the length of the date. If it goes well, you should leave the date happy, curious, and looking forward to seeing him again. If it doesn’t go well, a polite decline for a second date (if he asks) should send a clear message. I will admit, I have first date jitters. But I think that’s to be expected. I’m more excited than nervous and look forward to meeting He ;) Next month I will dish on the date and tell you how He (we) did! *Note from the Editor - Sorry He. Atlantic Ave Magazine will not cover any expenses for this or any future dates. However, we will claim full responsibility and credit if this date turns into a successful match!
