It’s also a way for our leadership team to thank every member for the work each does on behalf of the chamber.” The Chamber Ambassadors, a group of 30 volunteers, are charged with welcoming new members and helping them get the most from their chamber membership. T

he world’s best known mental health professional and No. 1 daytime talk show host Dr. Phil McGraw heads a lineup of entertainment and sports celebrities who will be participating in the 2017 Chris Evert/Raymond James ProCelebrity Tennis Classic coming up November 3-5. Local Representative Pilots “Senior Smiles” Program

O

n July 12 State Representative Emily Slosberg visited the Weisman Delray Community Center for a discussion entitled “Let’s Talk Politics.” Her goal was hearing unfiltered information from the community so she can file legislation to help solve those problems. Last year she went to all the Assisted Living Facilities and Independent living Facilities in District 91. A major complaint among residents was that while medical doctors come in to see them, many haven’t seen a dentist in ten years. They don’t have access, lack transporta-

icine to create the first Geriatric Dental rotation in the state. It’s hands on for the dental students and a mobile unit goes out into the community. The program is called “Senior Smiles Pilot Program” and it’s a Win-Win situation for practicing dentists with their mentors and patients alike. Ms. Slosberg points out that she never would have found out this important issue had she not gone out into the community, actively seeking issues that are important to her constituents. Ms. Slosberg would like to convey that she is the State Representative for District 91 and if you go to her office as a person living within the district, you are not asked what party you are from, only how you can be helped. “I represent you whether you are a Democrat, Independent, Republican, Green Party or any other affiliation you have. I think it’s very important that everybody knows that I’m elected to represent everyone alike. That’s what we’re here for; that’s what we are elected to do.” Ms. Slosberg invites anyone who would like to discuss issues important to them or seeking solutions to contact her office.

’m a true believer that success follows passion - there is nothing I love more than living the coastal lifestyle and helping others do the same. As a third generation real estate professional, originally from Maryland, I received my undergraduate degree from Georgetown University and a Master’s Degree in Real Estate from Johns Hopkins. After a stint in advertising for global brands, I began my career in real estate in 2009 as an agent and owned a property tax appeal business. Having spent a lot of time in South Florida over the past decade, I decided to become a full-time resident 3 years ago - and it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made. As a licensed Realtor® here, I am dedicated to staying relevant on the market. My commitment to professionalism and client satisfaction is my #1 priority. My specialty is in-town residences. locals only | delray under $50

By Darien Davies

Delray Under $50 Now that Delray Beach is a rising star in the art, culture and social scene, it might seem a little difficult to find affordable activities, shops or restaurants. I am here to prove you wrong. Delray Beach offers a mix of high-end boutiques with laid-back restaurants, and events for the whole family or nightclubs for night owls. Here is what you can do in Delray Beach in August for $50 or less.

W

hen I think of American adventures, I think American muscle. Open road, convertible, scarf (naturally) and a big, cherry car. August is American Adventures Month and if you’re lacking the muscle, the Delray Marketplace has you covered. Wednesday, August 16 is the Hot Florida Nights Car Cruise at Delray Marketplace where you can enjoy classic cars and music as you stroll around the shops and restaurants. This is the last event of the three-month series so make sure you get a taste of what these hot, classic cars are all about. The variety is exciting - you can see a great mix of classic cars. The free event is held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the corner lot to the far left of Frank Theaters so grab some friends and make a night out of it. Many of the Marketplace restaurants offer late-night happy hour and are ready to help you cross over the hump of the week so you can welcome Friday with open arms. eer: making living great since who cares when. College started my love affair with this delicious beverage and I haven’t looked back since. International Beer Day is Friday, August 4 and is the perfect time to peruse the Avenue and enjoy all the delicious brews that are awaiting your gullet. made brew, head to Saltwater Brewery where they make their beer in-house and have more than 15 beers on tap. They’re well known for their Sea Cow Milk Stout, Locale Pale Ale and the Screamin’ Reels IPA, but they also have The Black Current, Peanut Butter Cookie Sea Cow, Grapefruit Screamin’ Reels IPA, Accomplice Strawberry Cider and more. Bring the dog, play some cornhole, kick back and toast to the good life. If you are interested in sampling almost every bottled beer under the flavor rainbow, head to Beer Trade Co. and make yourself comfortable. They offer, what feels like, a few hundred bottles of beer – and some on tap – and you are guaranteed to make yourself crazy trying some familiar beers and some that you’ve never seen before. They even have some of the most delicious wings on the Avenue (the best accompaniment for beer) and plenty of TVs so you can watch all your favorite sports games. It’s like being in your living room but better! Have a fun beer day, just save one for me. Saltwater Brewery is located at 1701 W. Atlantic Ave. Visit www. saltwaterbrewery.com or call (561) 865-5373 for more information. Beer Trade Co. is located at 145 N.E. f you’re down for mollusks town, clear the calendar for National Oyster Day. Oysters aren’t my jam, but my sister, and millions of other people, love these little guys. I appreciate that they’re fresh, come with a plethora of flavor-enhancing toppings, and are quick to eat, leaving more wine time. If you enjoy oysters, belly up to City Oyster’s bar on Saturday, August 5 and go wild. City Oyster features a rotating menu of at least six different types of oysters and, if it gets any better than that, they’re part of the happy hour menu. From 4 to 7 p.m. daily, East Coast oysters are $1.75 each and West Coast oysters are $2.25 each. Oysters on the half shell are served for dinner nightly (market price) but you can also enjoy oysters casino or oysters Rockefeller for $17.50 each order. If you want to go all out and invite oysters’ friends, order the petite plateau and enjoy four oysters, four littlenecks, four cocktail shrimp and jumbo lump blue crab meat for $39. Whatever your pleasure, City Oyster is your go-to spot for indulging in oysters on such a fine holiday. City Oyster is located at 213 E. Atlantic Ave. Visit www.cityoysterdelray.com or call (561) 272-0220 for more information.

f you ask any person on the planet, I bet they’d say that they need a day to relax, sleep in, do nothing. Well, make that happen for yourself today. Tuesday, August 15 is National Relaxation Day and if you don’t want to indulge in a full blown massage, treat your feet to some reflexology action at Foot Haven Reflexology Bar. The space invites you to leave your stress, worries and “noise” (as my husband calls it) at the door, and just relax. You will start with an herbal detoxifying foot soak while licensed therapists target any knots in your back and shoulders.

Once relaxed, you’ll lie back into super comfortable leather recliner chairs, offered a comfy blanket if needed, and enjoy a fabulous foot reflexology. They even give you a complimentary glass of champagne, white or red wine, or hot tea, and it’s incredibly enjoyable to the point that you won’t want to leave. If you want to up the relaxation ante, you can add on a hot stone massage, scrub or hot cucumber paraffin wax dip. The 55-minute foot reflexology is only $39 and just an additional $10 for an add on. Foot Haven Reflexology Bar is located at 247 S.E. Sixth Ave., Suite 3. Visit www.foothavenreflexology.com or call (561) 330-4084 for more information and to book appointments.

othing says happiness to me like a delicious Bloody Mary and brunch al fresco. August is Happiness Happens Month so get ready for a fun event that will put the Fun-day in Sunday. Old School Square is hosting the Bottomless Bloody Mary and “Brunch” on a Stick event on Sunday, August 27, which is the last event in their Sizzlin’ Summer Social Series in the Fieldhouse. Held from 1 to 3 p.m., you’re invited to enjoy creative meals on a skewer that accompany each Bloody Mary. Participating restaurants include Ceviche 401, Harvest Seasonal Grill & Wine Bar, Death or Glory, Pizza Rustica and Lilo’s, so it’s a guarantee that you’re going to be privy to some delicious and innovative food. The skewer design also pretty much guarantees that you won’t have to choose between your drink and your food, and you can probably even dance while you eat. Hello happiness! There’s a bottomless Bloody Mary bar and an array of sweets, cheese and fruit that you can also revel in throughout the event. Tickets are only $45 and are all inclusive (as well as very limited), so it’s a great deal for brunch and fun with friends. The Old School Square Fieldhouse is located at 51 N. Swinton Ave. Visit www.oldschool.org or call (561) 2437922 for more information and to purchase tickets.

In Memoriam

Skip Sheffield August 29, 1947  ~ July 20, 2017 

N

obody knew more about music, arts and culture in South Florida than our friend Skip Sheffield. He lived, breathed and wrote about the arts since the late 1960s when he went to work for the Boca News. Over the years, he became a valuable contributor to Atlantic Ave magazine and to other arts publications in Florida. We lost Skip suddenly last month. It was a shock to his family, friends, readers and fans. It just won’t feel the same without him in our community. Skip has been part of the landscape in Delray and Boca Raton for so long that he just seemed like a permanent fixture--a bridge to our community’s past who kept us apprised of our present and often warned us about our future if we lost what made our community great in the first place. He was a kind man. Quiet, understated, without ego or pretense. In many ways, he

40 | August 2017 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

was a throwback to a simpler time when we knew our neighbors, hung out at the same bars and listened to the same local bands-some of which included Skip who was a talented musician as well as a gifted writer, reporter and critic. Skip never got rich, but he lived a life doing what he loved and in a place he was passionate about. That my friends is the definition of success. And he was loved by all those who had the good fortune to meet him. He was a gentleman, a smart and committed journalist and someone who appreciated the little things in life. He will be remembered always. He’s a part of our history. An important part. May he rest in peace.

August 4 Like Stephen King? You are in luck. The first installment of King’s eight-part horror series “The Dark Tower” opens nationwide Friday, August 4. Idris Elba is Roland Deschain, The Gunslinger and Matthew McConaughey is The Man in Black. Lucas Hamilton is the kid trying to make sense of it all. Nikolaj Aercel cowrote the script and directs. Don’t mess with Halle Berry when she plays Karla Dyson, a young mom whose son Frankie (Sage Correa) is taken forcibly in “Kidnap.” Hell hath no fury like a mother wronged. Luis Prieto directs. The title says it all. “Detroit” recreates the terrible summer of 1967, when Detroit, Michigan descended into anarchy with the worst riots in American history. John Boyega, Anthony Mackie and Algee Smith star. Kathryn Bigelow directs with her screenwriting partner Mark Boal (“Hurt Locker,” “Zero Dark 30”). August 11 Spoiler alert: “Annabelle: Creation” is a doll. Not just any doll but a devil doll. When their daughter dies, a doll maker and his wife invite a nun (Stephanie Sigman) and several orphaned girls into their home. David F. Sandberg (“Lights Out”) directs this sequel to the 2014 original. “The Glass Castle” stars Naomi Watts as an artistic mom, Woody Harrelson as her alcoholic husband and Brie Larson as the daughter trying to make sense of a family squatting in an abandoned building in the Lower East Side of New York. This is supposedly a true story. Enough with the sequels already. “Nut Job II: Nutty By

Nature” continues the adventures of Surly the squirrel (Voiced by Will Arnett) and his forest friends, who want to stop the mayor from bulldozing their woods to create an amusement park. Other voices are provided by Katherine Heigl, Maya Rudolph, Jackie Chan and Isabella Moner. August 18 “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” is a comedy starring Ryan Reynolds as the bodyguard

and Samuel L. Jackson as the hitman. Just to make things interesting, Salma Hayek plays the hitman’s wife. Every action movie needs a bad guy, and Gary Oldman obliges as Vladislav Dukovich. August 25 Remember Polaroid instant photos? “Polaroid” stars Madelaine Petsch (“The Curse of Sleeping Beauty”) as Bird Fitcher, a high school loner who happens upon a vintage camera. This camera is special. It dooms the person who takes pictures with it. Can Bird and her nubile coeds survive a night with the haunted camera? “The Life and Death of John Gotti” is about the infamous gangster Gotti, known as “The Dapper Don.” John Travolta plays John Gotti and his real-life wife Kelley Preston plays his wife Victoria. Keeping it in the family, Ella Bleu Travolta plays daughter Angel Gotti. Supporting players are Stacey Keach, Lydia Hull, William DeMeo and Spencer Lofranco. Kevin Connolly (“The Notebook”) directs. How about some inspiration in the doldrums of summer? “All Saints” is the true story of a salesman-turned pastor Michael Spurlock (John Corbett) who is ordered to shut down a small church. Instead he makes it a viable Institution with the help of willing Southeast Asians refugees. Steve Gomer (“Barney’s Great Adventure”) directs. August 30 “Leap” is an animated dance movie starring Elle Fanning as an orphan girl who flees Brittany to seek her fortune in Paris, where she fakes her way into the Grand Opera House. Other voices are provided by Carly Rae Jepson and Dane Dettaan. Eric Summer, who actually is from Brittany, France, directs. Halle berry “kidnap”

The End of Alzheimer’s: The First Program to Prevent and Reverse Cognitive Decline

by Dale Bredesen Released August 22, 2017 groundbreaking plan to prevent and reverse Alzheimer’s Disease that fundamentally changes how we understand cognitive decline. Everyone knows someone who has survived cancer, but until now no one knows anyone who has survived Alzheimer’s Disease. In this paradigm shifting book, Dale Bredesen, MD, offers real hope to anyone looking to prevent and even reverse Alzheimer’s Disease and cognitive decline. Revealing that AD is not one condition, as it is currently treated, but three, “The End of Alzheimer’s” outlines 36 metabolic factors (micronutrients, hormone levels, sleep) that can trigger “downsizing” in the brain. The protocol shows us how to rebalance these factors using lifestyle modifications like taking B12, eliminating gluten, or improving oral hygiene. The results are impressive. Of the first ten patients on the protocol, nine displayed significant improvement with 3-6 months; since then the protocol has yielded similar

results with hundreds more. Now, “The End of Alzheimer’s” brings new hope to a broad audience of patients, caregivers, physicians, and treatment centers with a fascinating look inside the science and a complete stepby-step plan that fundamentally changes how we treat and even think about AD.

The Other Girl

by Erica Spindler Released August 22, 2017 fficer Miranda Rader of the Harmony, Louisiana PD is known for her honesty, integrity, and steady hand in a crisis—but that wasn’t always so. Miranda comes from the town of Jasper, a place about the size of a good spit on a hot day, and her side of the tracks was the wrong one. She’s worked hard to earn the respect of her coworkers and the community. When Miranda and her partner are called to investigate the murder of one of the town’s most beloved college professors, they’re unprepared for the brutality of the scene. This murder is unlike any they’ve ever investigated, and just when Miranda thinks she’s seen the worst of it, she finds a piece of evidence that chills her to the core: a faded newspaper clipping about that terrible night fifteen years ago. The night she’d buried, along with her past and the girl she’d been back then. Until now that grave had stayed sealed…except for those times, in the deepest part of the night, when the nightmares came: of a crime no one believed happened and the screams of the girl they believed didn’t exist. Then another man turns up dead, this one a retired cop. Not just any cop—the one who took her statement that night. Two murders, two very different men, two killings that on the surface had nothing in common—except Miranda.

Paul McCartney

Ageless and Agile

I

t is hard to believe Paul McCartney is 75. The “Cute Beatle” is eternally boyish and agile as ever, as he proved July 7 at American Airlines Arena in Miami. McCartney held forth for nearly three hours and 40 songs in the warm Florida evening, accompanied by his band of 15 years: guitarists Rusty Anderson and Brian Ray, drummer Abe Laboriel, Jr. providing harmonies even higher than McCartney’s and Paul Wickens on keyboards and guitars. McCartney is no slouch on instruments. In addition to his signature Hofner violin bass, he played left-handed acoustic and electric guitars and piano. McCartney honored his late band mate John Lennon with “Here Today” and George Harrison on ukulele with “Something.” Drummer Ringo Starr, who is even older than McCartney at 77, was honored with a rocking “Birthday.” What the audience enjoyed most was McCartney’s reminiscenc-

48 | August 2017 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

es of Beatlemania. Unlike some performers of a certain age, McCartney does not resent his past successes, nor playing his greatest hits yet once again. Fans got in abundance, starting with “A Hard Day’s Night,” continuing with “Can’t Buy Me Love” and “Letting Go” from his wings incarnation. “Let Me Roll It” from the Wings era was accompanied by a snippet from Jimi Hendrix’s “Foxy Lady.” McCartney is known as the most sentimental Beatle, which he brought out with the piano ballad “My Valentine” for his wife Nancy (who happened to be in the audience). No McCartney show would be complete without a theatrical version of “Live and Let Die” from the James Bond movie, accompanied by deafening pyrotechnics. But the most intimate moment was McCartney’s “Blackbird” on acoustic guitar on a riser, recalling the Civil Rights era. Paul McCartney is indeed a man for all seasons. Long may he play.

John Mellencamp Lights a Cherry Bomb With Carlene Carter and Emmylou Harris at Mizner Park

John Mellencamp

J

ohn Mellencamp brought a slice of the American heartland of Indiana to his concert June 25 to Mizner Park Amphitheater in Boca Raton. As an appetizer he invited country music stars Carlene Carter and Emmylou Harris as opening acts. Carter is part of the Carter Family musical dynasty. Her mother was June Carter, who married Johnny Cash. Her grandmother was Maybelle Carter, matriarch of the clan. “Let’s get this party started,” declared Carlene on the dot of 7 p.m., armed only with a jumbo acoustic guitar. She is not shy about revealing personal details of her life. She is 61, has seven grandchildren and is happily married (she hopes) for the fourth time. In honor of her mother she performed a short version of “Ring of Fire” as well as some of her originals. Emmylou Harris is surely one of the most beautiful women ever to grace the stages of country music. In fact she was a beauty

queen in her Birmingham, Alabama high school, in which she was also the graduating class valedictorian. She acknowledged she had a “really happy childhood.” Harris brought her band of Red Dirt Boys, which is a reference to her 2000 hit “Red Dirt Girl.” She played but a few favorites from her substantial catalog, which has amassed 13 Grammy Awards so far. For “Even a Cowgirl Sings the Blues” she brought out her friend Carlene and two of Mellencamp’s prodigies, Lily and Madeleine for background harmonies. John Mellencamp is the polar opposite of a rock star. He keeps it very direct and simple, like the songs he writes. He was promoting his latest album, “Sad Clowns and Hillbillies,” and he played several selections from that April, 2017 release, opening with “Lawless Times.” Mellencamp, once known as Johnny Cougar - a name he hated

- is 65 now, but he looks much younger. He is proud to be from a “Small Town,” and contemptuous of being labelled a “Pop Singer.” Seven songs in, his band left the stage and Mellencamp strapped on an acoustic guitar. “I wrote this when I was around 25 years old,” he drawled. “You probably expect to hear it, so here it is.” He launched into his 1982 No. 1 hit, “Jack and Diane.” Leading ladies Carlene Carter and Emmylou Harris joined Mellencamp on “My Soul’s Got Wings” on his latest album, which is based on an old song by Woody Guthrie. Playing to the back seats Mellencamp unleashed a volley of hits including “Rain on the Scarecrow,” “Paper in Fire,” “Crumbling Down” and the explosive “Cheery Bomb.” For a lovely evening, the Heartland was alive and well in Boca Raton.

By Dr. Alycia Pugh

Keeping Chronic Ankle Sprains Out Of Sports Ankle sprain injuries are the one of the most common injuries affecting 9 million people yearly. They account for almost half of all sports injuries.

A

lthough sprains can range from mild to severe, most people do not realize just what it entails to have an ankle sprain and treatment options to better prevent reoccurrence. An ankle sprain refers to tearing of the ligaments of the ankle. Ligaments in general are those structures that connect bone-to-bone. More than 80 percent of ankle sprains are a result of inversion, or inward rolling, of the ankle. This occurs on the lateral or outside part of the ankle at the ATFL or anterior talofiblular ligament, which connects the talus to the fibula and the CFL or calcaneofibular ligament, which connects the fibula to the calcaneus below. Patients typically complain of pain and ecchymosis or bruising on the outside of the ankle. They may not be able to weight bear. The risk factors include a wide variety of activities from basketball and jumping sports to slipping off the sidewalk. It can happen in conjunction with an ankle fracture, most commonly an avulsion fracture, or tearing of the nearby tendons. Some people are predisposed to ankle sprains. In people with a hindfoot varus, which means that the general nature or posture of the heels is slightly turned toward the inside, these injuries are more common because it is easier to turn on the ankle. In those who have had a severe sprain in the past, it is also easier to turn the ankle and cause a new sprain due to having instability. Those who have weak muscles, especially those called the peroneals which run along the outside of the ankle, may be more predisposed. Diagnosis should include determining the region and grade of sprain. If necessary utilizing radiographs to rule out concomitant fracture is advised. The primary goals in treating ankle sprains are to restore or stabilize joint movement, eliminate pain and 52 | August 2017 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

swelling, eliminate fibrosis, progressively strengthen the tissues and provide neurological proprioceptive re-training to prevent chronic injury of the same region. In the initial stages of injury for 24-48 hours some at home care tips follow the acronym PRICE: Protect by bracing during activity, Rest by limiting weightbearing activities, Ice for 20 minutes at a time, Compression with bandages, and Elevation of the foot above the head to allow lymphatic drainage. Further treatment entails some simple procedures including Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization Therapy that utilizes mild stainless instruments scanning the fascia searching for fibrotic changes. These changes are felt through the instrument that acts like a stethoscope to magnify the “lesions” which aid in breaking up existing scar tissue, increasing fibroblasts or “collagen builders” within the cells, proliferate and realign new collagen fibers. New cutting edge procedures involve the use of high power Class IV lasers that accelerate energy production and tissue healing by nearly tenfold. Recovery consists of transitioning through an acute phase to a rehabilitative phase allowing the tensile strength of the tissues to return in generally 6-8 weeks. By facilitating proper rehabilitation throughout the healing process, healing time can be decreased and chance for chronic injury is minimized. Vanquish Your Imperfections As summer fades in South Florida, the zest for diet, exercise and alluring shape only accelerates. “If I could just be one size smaller,” is not reserved for swimsuits. We are a people addicted to healthy, fit bodies and beautiful contours, and now, those of us who pine for any easy fix to love handles, muffin tops and man boobs have a resource that seems too good to be true.

T

he technology is called Vanquish, a completely non-invasive procedure to annihilate fat cells using radio frequency. Dermatology and Laser Medicine claim it as an enormous breakthrough. There is no surgery involved and no needles are required; in fact, the procedure is completely pain free. The machine never even touches the patient’s skin. Deep tissue heating without damaging skin or muscle effects measurable results in this FDA approved approach to the destruction of fat cells. Results can be seen after just four sessions of forty-five minutes each. Vanquish fat melting sessions are controlled and comfortable. The dermatologist will adjust the laser to hover over the areas of the body to be treated, never touching the machine to the skin. The heat produced from the laser will feel warm, never hot, and will resemble the sensation of a heating pad on the belly. Sensors built into the device “tune” the patient’s fat and customize the energy required for each patient’s treatment session. The science involved is simple. Once the fat cells have been

54 | August 2017 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

overheated, they die off and are filtered through the lymphatic system, metabolized in the liver and then excreted through urine. For this process to be effective, patients are asked to drink plenty of water before and after the procedure, aiding in the elimination of dead fat. Some minimal redness may occur at the site of the procedure, but swelling is extremely unlikely. Patients are not reporting any contraindications. They are losing two to four inches after four treatments without changing their diets or increasing exercise. Of course there are skeptics, but the ease of delivery for Vanquish speaks bundles about its ability to please patients. Unlike the other fat buster technologies of the last thirty years, treatments don’t involve downtime or discomfort for the patient. Liposuction, while capable of eradicating larger volumes of fat, requires anesthesia and surgery and sometimes delivers uneven results. Ultrasound, in which a hand piece is moved around the body to destroy fat with deep-diving sound waves, generally requires pain medication. Cryotherapthy, which freezes fat cells, does work, but is a slow process for both the patient and the technician and requires a significant time commitment. Vanquish, from all sides, seems to be the fat busting venue of the future. Vanquish is new, exciting and full of promise. Today it is eliminating beer bellies and love handles. Tomorrow it will reach to contour flabby arms and fatty necks. From the point of view of the dermatologist, this is very “cool” technology; from the point of view of the patient, this may be the hottest technique on the planet for looking good. Dr. Thomas C. health & beauty | Your Dental Health

By dr. craig spodak, dmd, pa

Don’t Fear the Dentist! Don’t let dental anxiety keep you from having a healthy smile.

D

o you suffer from fear of the dentist? If so, you’re not alone. As many as 40 million Americans share your fear, with some 4 to 8 million so fearful that they avoid dental visits all together. Sadly, avoiding the dentist leads to declining oral health, generating greater fear and anxiety, continuing the cycle of anxiety and avoidance. The types of fear can range from minor anxiety to various forms of psychiatric disorders, such as dentophobia (an inordinate fear of dental treatment), aichmophobia (a pathological fear of all sharp objects), or trypanophobia (an extreme or irrational fear of needles). For others, their fear may be triggered by the sights, sounds or smells of the dental office or the confines of the dental chair, and an overall feeling of not being in control. Regardless of fear’s form or ferocity, it’s difficult for people to visit their dentist unless the pain becomes unbearable. This pain probably could have been avoided with regular preventative care, but it’s not too late to try and overcome your fears for the sake of your health.

What Dentist are Doing to Help

Helping patients hurdle the obstacles of their fear should be the priority of every practice. Through the skilled use of sedation, dentists can manage their patients’ fear and pain. For many, local anesthesia may be all that’s needed to achieve a calm and painfree experience. For others with mild to moderate anxiety, oral sedation or nitrous oxide (laughing gas) can be used for relaxation. Those with heightened anxiety can benefit from conscious IV sedation. Unlike oral medications, conscious IV sedation affords the dentist the ability to control the degree of sedation throughout the procedure, as needed, to ensure the patient’s optimal comfort and ease. The administration of IV sedation requires special training and certification. Placing your care in the hands of a fully-qualified practitioner will increase your confidence and quiet your anxiety. For patients with extreme anxiety, or those facing complex or lengthy procedures, IV sleep sedation is a fear-quieting option. 56 | August 2017 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Sleep Dentistry Genuine Sleep Dentistry is both fully tranquilizing and fully amnesiac, allowing you to relax and not focus on the sights, sounds and smells of the dental office. Until now, though, most patients had to bear the high cost, inconvenience and added stress of hospitalization in order to safely take advantage of the benefits, but no longer. Sleep Dentistry, which is administered in the dental office, allows the dentist to erase years of neglect in one visit, enabling patients to receive the care they desperately need. The key to coping with dental anxiety is to discuss your fears with your dentist. Once your dentist knows what your fears are, he/she will be able to work with you to determine the best ways to make you less anxious and more comfortable. Your dentist can also review every step of every dental appointment and procedure so you feel more in control. It’s never too late to receive optimal dental health, and don’t let your fear hinder your chances of making the most out of your beautiful smile! Back to School, Back to YOU! Summer has come to a close and now it’s back to the school year grind. Summer is a time for loose schedules… aka missed workouts, family vacations…lots of extra calories and kids to entertain. No time to yourself!

A

lthough fun and exciting, all these summer activities can reek havoc on the body and make getting back on track that much harder. There is no better time than now to make your fitness regime part of that “grind.” Here are a few tips to get back on track, feeling good and beat those summer blues. The first and most important component of getting back on track is to have a “fitness” plan and to set a goal for yourself. Setting a fitness plan could be as simple as saying you’re going to get to the gym 3x per week. Make sure it’s at a time that will not be interrupted and a time that will work for you. Next up is to set a small goal. Having a “specific” goal will allow you to focus on training and give you extra motivation to exercise. It’s a lot easier to make it to the finish line if you have an attainable goal in sight. Whatever this goal may be, write it down and put it somewhere where you will be reminded of it everyday. Committing your goal to paper and seeing the written words are more powerful than just having a thought or talking about it. Next order of business would be for you to get your eating in check! I highly recommend keeping a daily food log of exactly everything that you are consuming…the good the bad and the ugly! This will help you easily pinpoint your strengths and weaknesses. Make sure to get in the proper mix of lean protein, complex carbohydrates, healthy fats and of course lots of veggies. Skip anything that is processed and stick to all homemade prepared meals (yes, with preparation and thought…you can do it!)

58 | August 2017 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

The other nutrition component is water! Your body can not properly burn fat if it is dehydrated. It’s such a simple thing many people don’t do. Aim for 1oz of water per pound of bodyweight. Drinking proper amounts of water will also help to keep you feeling full, flush out toxins and help debloat you faster than you may realize. So get out that gallon and start your chuggin! The last step to help you get back on track is to find an accountability partner. Surely you can find someone…a friend, the neighbor, your dog (just kidding!) who is looking to get in shape or even just live a healthier lifestyle. An accountability partner will help keep you on track and honest. I see greater fitness retention when friends pair up.

Think about it….you’re much less likely to skip your workout if someone is meeting you and it gives you someone to call when you’re ready to throw in the towel. If you follow these three principles it should help you get back on track in no time! My last piece of advice, don’t do the old…”I’ll start on Monday!” There is no better time to start than now! Come up with a plan, set a goal, clean up your eating, grab a friend and get moving! You’ll be glad you did. Fastport Passport also has 24-hour online service if you want to order a passport or visa, or just need information. Often people don’t realize they need a new passport when they change their name after a recent marriage or divorce. If your passport is expiring in six months you will need to renew it before leaving the country. Fastport Passport also has a photo service that allows you to upload a digital photo and their passport specialists will review and print it for your passport or visa application. They can even print your passport photo and ship it to you the next business day. If you’ve never had a passport then you need to have proof of your travel plans and show you are leaving within 14 days. “We walk you through the entire process and make sure all the paperwork is filled out correctly. This way we know you’ve sent us

all the correct documents. Our customer service team can help you over the phone from all over the US. That’s how we make sure it is done properly and quickly,” said Lindsey, who moved to Boca Raton to expand the business from its New York headquarters. Things have changed a lot since 9/11 – that means you need a Passport or Visa done correctly so you can travel on the date you’ve planned. Photos need to be taken with a clear visual of your face (no glasses) and children also need passports to travel outside the US. If you go to a state agency for a passport it could take up to eight weeks (or longer) and there is little assistance to make sure all goes right. If you turn to Fastport Passport, they can get your passport in as quickly as 24 hours, or in two or three weeks, depending on your specific needs. “I’m really proud of what we have accomplished here. We can turn a chaotic situation into some of the most incredible memories from a long-awaited dream trip,” said Lindsey. She’s right. Just ask Kristen. “I highly recommend this company to anyone in need of Passport or Visa services. They were extremely fast, efficient and reliable. I received my Passport in less time than I selected in my order. I’m now ready for my international vacation and couldn’t have done it in the time needed without Fastport Passport.” Fastport Passport has been recognized as a leader in the industry for its diligence and efficiency. With new government regulations, the demand for passports has increased and so has the waiting time. “A Passport is the most important federally issued document you will carry. It’s also a great memory holder for all your cool trips.” By mentioning this article, you get 10 percent off your next Passport service.

“We are all busy and our mind is constantly going; we are thinking about what we did yesterday, where we have to be in an hour, and what we have to do tomorrow. When we are running around like that, we are really missing out on experiencing life,” says owner Kelly Doyle. “Our mission is to take you to a place of rejuvenation every time you enter our doors. We are here to teach you how to relax. How to live in the moment, find your still-point. It is in this place where we find clarity and in that clarity paths become apparent, space is given to negative thoughts and life begins to take on a natural flow.” The owner wants her customers to find purpose and meaning from their visit. “Everything we offer at Thermae Retreat is purposeful, meaning we have saunas for relaxation, detoxing, calming inflammation, lowering blood pressure and rejuvenating our skin. Custom massage such as raindrop therapy, deep tissue or Thai massage for physical pain or stress relief. Skincare to take care of our largest organ, our skin, through salt and flower petal scrubs, kelp wraps or biodynamic facials. Sacred bodywork, vibration therapies, Reiki, quantum healing and meditation sessions and we also offer monthly memberships that include unlimited use of the saunas, the meditation room, outdoor showers, move area with vibration trainers, light weights and rebounder along with 10% off treatments,” says Kelly. The owner was inspired to open Thermae Retreat after discovering these methods of relaxation while on a life-changing trip at a Holland wellness center. “I spent the entire day going from one sauna to another, not talking to anyone. After three weeks, I was asked what I was thinking about and I said nothing. It was the first time when my Peaceful Relaxation in Meditation Room

detox, be still & renew... daily Detoxifying Infrared Saunas with Chromotherapy

head was completely cleared and I was living in the present. When I got home, I wanted to share that feeling with others,” says Kelly. “We all have a purpose for why we are here. My purpose is to help people awaken and have a place to go to be quiet and find clarity.” Many clients have experienced positive results and now live a more stress free life. “I go to spas all over the world and I have to say this place is truly incredible. The Meditation Room was an experience by itself. Massage was deep pressure and really worked into spots other therapists disregard. The color therapy saunas were a beautiful experience. All the staff were very attentive and genuinely caring. I spent the day there and I didn’t want to go,” said a happy client. “This is one of my favorite things I experience daily. Clients and members walk in cell phone in hand, stressed faces and walk out calm, mind reset, body refreshed and skin glowing with pink cheeks. What we teach is how to be present. What we hope is that you learn over time to take that sense of presence with you and stay there for an hour, then an afternoon, then a day and next thing you know that becomes your state of being. It has an effect on everyone you talk to from a child to a workmate. It is a state of calmness and there is no better way to live,” says Kelly. DELRAY BEACH BOXING & FITNESS

The Ring of Health and Fitness If you could take a walk back in time, would you? If you could find a place that would motivate you to get in the best shape of your life, would you?

I

f the answer is yes to any of these questions, then you must go to Delray Beach Boxing & Fitness. It’s the only boxing gym in Delray that is raw in intent with an inclusive authenticity that makes for a softer landing in the landscape of life. They’ve only been open for three months and its already being touted as the premier Boxing and Fitness Club to put down roots in Palm Beach County. As co-owner Rich Wilson likes to say, “There are no boxing gyms like this. This is a gentleman’s (and ladies) club. We’re like family here, there are no bullies on the premises.” Wilson is right. Part of the magic that surrounds this Boxing and Fitness Club is that everyone seems to congeal harmoniously. Some call it a real “Cheers” atmosphere where everyone knows your name. But we like to think of it as a heart-filled epicenter of gravity that promotes a raw sense of fitness with boxing at its core.

64 | August 2017 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

The Boxing ring is Olympic size like the ones you see on TV. But unlike those bodily battle grounds, this one is gentler and more focused on getting clients in excellent physical and mental shape. “I have a third-degree black belt in Martial Arts and this is the best cardio I’ve ever done. It gets me in shape for golfing and is the cleanest, nicest gym I’ve ever found. The camaraderie here is unparalleled and we support each other,” said Rick Jankee, owner of Sail Inn Tavern. For Simon Reynolds Delray Boxing & Fitness Center has been life altering. “I lost 17 pounds since joining Delray Boxing. This sport requires intelligence, it’s not just physical. I’m more focused now and healthier. This is the only place I’ve ever belonged that makes me want to work out.” To offer members the best of breed in fitness and lifestyle improvement, Olympic Trained Coach, Kofi Sekyiamah is in the house.

Kofi’s goal is to improve clients lives and help them reach their health and fitness goals (however lofty). Delray Boxing recently opened a new Fitness Center with Peloton bikes, treadmills and strength training equipment. There are group classes (for boxing or fitness) or one-on-one training sessions. If you want to get fit without getting hit, try one of their “Wake Up and Box classes” at 6:30, 7:30 or 8:30am. They have stretching, shadow boxing and a heavy bag workout. Personal fitness and individual training sessions are also available. There is a Kid’s Corner (for ages 12 and up) where young people can learn a fitness discipline that builds self-esteem and endurance. Friday Nights are fight nights with guidance from boxing trainers and sparring partners. But there’s more. A lot more in store for members of this center of gravity that moves in tandem with the motion of its members. They have an English-style Pub called The Cornerman Pub & Lounge. This Speak Easy-inspired Club gives you a ringside seat for all the action in the ring (glass separates the two). Its creation is one of genius and ingenuity. For comfort and camaraderie, the walls are made with reclaimed wood from a 100-year-old barn, the bar top is made of copper and the leather stools and banquettes guarantee maximum comfort. You can get all premium liquors or beer and wine at the drop of a hat. The best part is that Matt Fronzaglia is the Managing Director. Matt is the friend you always wanted, the drinking buddy you crave and the most amiable host in the county. His wife Maria is often nearby (at night) and the two make the “Cheers” effect a wholesome reality. “There is a real bonding and sense of community that goes on between people here. They come from different social circles and career paths but everyone who comes here finds common ground. For

me this is Disneyland,” said co-owner Michael Hockton, whose family had a boxing gym in East London. Hockton wants you to know “you can get fit without getting hit” and that boxing classes are available six days a week. “You can burn 1000 calories in one hour of boxing,” said the Englishman whose accent will make you feel like you’re in a movie with subtitles. A little bit of England goes a long way at this Pub and Boxing Club. They have an authentic English Phone Booth where you can order cuisine from Delivery Dudes (with no fee). There are also Food Trucks for Fight Nights (broadcast on all eight of their large TV screens) when everyone gathers in the pub. If all this talk about fights and boxing has you thinking the club is for men, think again. Many of their members are women who enjoy and embrace this fitness-boxing-pub environment as much as men. Reynolds’ wife Patti often accompanies her husband in the ring where they spar. She also exercises and takes boxing lessons. Interior Designer Jenny also enjoys this 6000-square-foot machismo inspired sporting environment. “This is the most authentic boxing experience in South Florida. It’s not only the décor that is captivating, but the talent, technique and skill of the fighters inspires and motivates me. This is the best workout,” said the Boca Raton beauty. In today’s world, there isn’t much that people agree on. But at Delray Beach Boxing & Fitness Center there’s a harmony and camaraderie that encompasses all in the world that is inherently good. Stop by and see for yourself. It’s nirvana for the sports and health minded and the best place on earth for those who want to be embraced with kindness, courageousness and comfort. Your Local Luxury-Performance Dealer for Sales, Service, and Parts Some might call Rod Rifai a matchmaker… There’s not a day that goes by that he isn’t helping clients find just the perfect fit.

W

hether an ultra luxury Porsche or Range Rover, an everyday Toyota or solving service problems, Rod and his experienced team are always there to help with all your automotive needs. For over 30 years, Rod has perfected the matchmaking business when it comes to automotive sales, service and parts. He continues to expand his business, Luxury Performance Automotive Group, located in Delray Beach just one mile North of Atlantic Avenue. With the building being over 25,000 square feet, they offer an excess of 55 vehicles inside one of their showrooms. Clients can find their next vehicle in the comfort of an air conditioned showroom; or in a state-of-the-art warehouse with cars stacked to the ceiling, customers can inspect the vehicle and take it out for a test drive through an automated door and return back to the warehouse without having to deal with the extreme heat of summer or the sporadic rain storms of South Florida. The business also offers a full service state-of- the-art service facility for all types of vehicles.

State of the art European manufactured storage lifts

“We were selling only ultra luxury vehicles but saw the demand for luxury and economy cars since there are no franchise stores for brands like BMW, Audi, Bentley, Porsche, and Land Rover in the area. We also saw the need for high quality service at an affordable price,” said the owner. “Service is the key to our business. We service all kinds of vehicles and specialize in Land Rovers, BMWs, Audi, Porsche and Mercedes Benz. This provides the customer with

a great convenience as they can get their vehicles serviced locally in Delray Beach and not have to travel to West Palm or Fort Lauderdale, and they get the same atmosphere of a new car store but at up to half the price of a new car dealership.” When you walk into the showroom, you are in awe of the beautiful luxury cars, from the Ferraris to a collector’s Mercedes Benz SLS Gulwing. The showroom is filled with works of art from local artists and offers a clean waiting room for clients and guests. Their knowledgeable and friendly staff greets clients with a smile and a helping hand and makes you feel right at home. The sales manager has over 20 years experience in the luxury car business, the finance manager has more than 14 years experience, the master technician has an excess of 30 years experience, and all their technicians are ASE certified. Because they are family-owned and operated, they take as much time hand-picking the automotive technicians as they do in ensuring that you get the best customer service. The owner is proud of their service specialists who combine over 60 years of experience with master training in European automobiles. Their technical expertise and state-of-the-art diagnostic and repair technologies address any service issue you encounter. With every service, they treat your vehicle to a complimentary safety inspection, wash and vacuum. If you can’t come right away, we can store your vehicle in an air-conditioned facility that is constantly monitored. If you’re extremely busy, we can even arrange for car pickup and delivery and they even have a shuttle to and from Atlantic Avenue if you want to stop for lunch or go to the beach while waiting. “We only hire top notch people to create a top notch experience,” added the owner. What also sets the company apart from the rest is the stateof-the-art technology and automotive equipment. The owner has spared no expense on purchasing the best in the industry from a three car lift that is a must see to a tire machine that changes a tire without touching the wheel, to the highest quality OEM diagnostic computer software. Their technicians are qualified and experienced in working on all auto types from Ferraris to Toyotas and services range from oil changes and new tires to brakes and engine diagnostic and repair. “Every customer, no matter their type of vehicle from KIA, Toyota, Nissan to Mercedes Benz, BMW or Ferrari, is treated with the same luxury service at an extremely competitive price. Luxury Performance Automotive Group provides an ultra luxury facility with an ultra luxury atmosphere at an incredible value to our customers,” says Rod. wide variety of automobiles. His passion for the car business began at a young age when he started buying and fixing up cars and then racing them. He then worked in banking and then managed car dealerships before owning several new car dealerships in the Miami market. “I have been in the automotive industry for over 30 years and owned predominantly new car dealerships. After I sold them all, I moved to Delray Beach to retire but I got bored and missed my passion. I wanted to do what I love to do, which is working with cars and helping people,” he said. Since he started his automotive career to this day, he still experiences joy in connecting car buyers with vehicles that meet their needs, from entry level vehicles to luxury or collectible automobiles. “It’s always fun to help a customer find a car that fits their current needs. It doesn’t matter if it’s a $300,000 Ferrari or a $10,000 KIA, to that person regardless of price it’s their new car. Finding the right car for the right customer is very rewarding,” says Rod. If you are looking to purchase or lease a quality pre-owned luxury or economy car, search no further! GOLD COAST DERMATOLOGY CENTER

By diane feen | Photos by Melissa korman

Making Skin Beautiful One Person At A Time Gold Coast Dermatology Center dedicates itself to the art of healing and wellness. They treat all types of skin conditions and are dedicated to smoothing out winkles in your well-being.

T

o accomplish this goal, they have two extremely accomplished Aestheticians that offer the latest in skin care treatments within the medical spa category. It’s one thing to go to a day spa – but another to do so under the watchful eye of a Board-Certified Dermatologist. “We customize every treatment for your skin type and set goals for your skin. When necessary we work with the doctor synergistically so you receive the right treatment for your skin,” said Lauren Kalina, a licensed Professional Medical Aesthetician with 27 years of experience in this healing art. Kalina is not just an extraordinary leader in the field of skin care, but her passion for her clients – and the industry – is legendary. She started one of the first day spas in Boca Raton and has dedicated her life to helping patients look and feel beautiful. To accomplish this goal Gold Coast Dermatology offers an array of skin treatments that address the essence of what your skin needs to retain its youthful glow. One such avenue is through a treatment known as Micro-needling. The result is the stimulation of collagen, reducing fine lines and plumping out wrinkles. It also tones and tightens skin and can reduce stretch marks and acne scars. “Micro-needling fights the aging process and increases blood flow. It’s become very popular, is non-invasive and stimulates skins natural healing process,” said Kalina. Illona and Lauren

Another avenue to agelessness is Dermaplaning. This treatment exfoliates the skin and gives it the dewy glow that celebrities seem to have a patent on. It’s perfect for delicate skin, takes peach fuzz off the face (it’s a total bonus) and is minimally invasive. Another cutting-edge way to keep your skin youthful is by having a chemical peel. Gold Coast Dermatology offers quite a few different options in this category but one of the most popular is the VI Peel®. This advanced medical peel effectively treats hyper-pigmentation, age spots, fine lines and wrinkles, acne and sun damage. You could say the skin-care industry has come a long way. What is now possible might have seemed like science fiction years’ ago. But with the latest technology your skin can retain its youthfulness far beyond your chronological years. “We have discovered many new treatments to help your skin regain its youthful appearance. We now have technology and science behind these treatments and our patients are becoming more proactive to protect their skin from the aging process,” adds Kalina, who is a former Esthetics Instructor, licensed by the Florida Department of Health and triple Certified in Micro-Needling. Another state-of-the-art skin peel is their Signature Peel, Revive. This custom blended specialty peel is gentle and reveals a fresher more radiant skin. The Revive Peel improves skin texture and uneven skin tone. The result is radiant skin that will have everyone saying, ‘your skin looks beautiful.’ To keep up with the demand for skin radiance Gold Coast Dermatology has added another licensed Medical Aesthetician to their staff – Ilona Gomez. Gomez is certified in chemical peels and advanced facial massage techniques.

Just like Kalina, she is lauded for her gentle touch and positive attitude. “I strive to give my clients the results they seek while promoting deep relaxation. My philosophy is to refine the art of healing by maximizing and balancing the client’s body, mind and spirit,” said Gomez. To keep skin in perfect balance and harmony Kalina suggests regular facials be part of your beauty regime. The treatment rooms are soothing with relaxing music, candles and essential oils. The crystal chandeliers and heated tables are guaranteed to make you feel like you’ve entered a back door to heaven. “Each facial is customized for the client’s skin type. We set goals and work with the doctor to make sure you get what is best for your skin. We have the best of both worlds – medical and spa. When you leave here you’ll have clean, fresh, bright luminous skin.” As part of good skin care and maintenance Kalina insists that consistency is key. “Home care is imperative to maintaining your skin

health between treatments. Gold Coast Dermatology offer clients a wide variety of skin care products.” The most coveted is a line by Dr. Zein Obagi called ZO®. This upscale line consists of cleansers for all skin types, exfoliating products, acne treatment, toners, brightners and healing creams. They also carry Eau Thermale Avène products perfect for sensitive skin. Their products soothe, soften and calm the skin. back to school

By nicol jenkins

Preparations For a Successful School Year First Day of School is Monday, August 14 It’s almost back to the books and homework for Delray Beach students, and there’s no better way to start the year off right than to plan ahead for the first day back.

S

et your alarm clocks… The first day of school for Palm Beach County and Delray Beach students is Monday, August 14. While students are looking forward to seeing their friends and classmates, they might be nervous about starting back in a new classroom with a different teacher or at a new school. Parents can help ease the back to school jitters and the transition from summer to another school year by using these helpful tips. Get familiar with the school. If your child is attending a new school, visit the campus a few weeks before school begins. Walk around the hallways, classrooms, cafeteria and school office so your child will know how to navigate their way around their new school.

Make a doctor appointment for your children before they head back to the classroom. Students must be healthy before they get back to school so they are ready to learn. State law also requires all Florida students to have their immunization records showing their vaccination history. In addition, parents enrolling their children for the first time in any Palm Beach County school must provide a Florida Certification of Immunization (DH 680 form). The Florida Department of Health in Palm Beach County has a full list of immunization requirements and its immunization van schedule at palmbeach.floridahealth.gov. Start early in all areas of back to school from bedtime to meal-

time and homework time. Tuck your child into bed earlier. Start back with earlier bedtime hours a few weeks before school starts so they can get adjusted to the new schedule. Also, start the healthy breakfast routine now so they won’t be craving junk food. Establishing schedules for homework, dinnertime, TV and sports times also helps. Arranging play times for your child and their classmates to meet before the start of school will help them get excited to go back with their friends. Back to school safety is the first priority. Children should know who to contact in case of an emergency and the best contact telephone number. Students should also be aware of traffic safety if walking or taking a bus to school. Find out the bus times and routes, know the bike and walking paths or chart out your carpooling plans ahead of time. Bullying is also an important conversation to have with your children. They should know how to report bullying instances, and be aware that it is okay to talk about what happened if they were bullied or witnessed bullying. Check your Back to School shopping lists. The earlier you shop, the better the deals on school supplies and clothing. But make sure you check the list first before buying supplies because some teachers require specific supplies. Also, be aware of the school’s dress code and what your child can and cannot wear during the school year. Now is the time to check with your school on any changes to their policies, as well as to find their suggested donation list for school supplies. An apple a day keeps the doctor away. School meals are also an important preparation for the school year. If you are packing your child’s lunch, be sure to include healthy meal items and mix it up during the week so they don’t get bored eating the same food over and over. If your children are eating at the school cafeteria, be sure to put aside enough lunch money and encourage choosing healthier meal choices. You can find the Palm Beach County Public Schools lunch menu on their website at http://www.palmbeachschools.org/ sfs/index.asp. When your child gets home from school, make them some healthy snacks and be sure to prepare some hearty meals for dinnertime! The planning doesn’t stop during the school day. After care or after school activities are also an important part of the preparation process. Make sure to know the dates and times for after school sporting practices, games or after school club meetings so you can arrange pick-up or carpooling. If you need to utilize after care programs, some local schools offer this service at the schools, while others do not have

the programs or space. Check with your child’s school for more information on after care programs, sports or club activities. Check your child’s school website as a resource. It is filled with important dates, phone numbers and event information. Many times, the school’s website will be updated and announce school activities, half days and other important information for students and parents. Encourage your child to do their best and enjoy a successful school year ahead!

A community activist has a responsibility to their community and to themselves.

Jeannie Fernsworth 78 | August 2017 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

The Green Goddess Not many people were fortunate enough to roam the halls of the Capital Building or have Helen Thomas as a babysitter in the Senate Press Gallery.

B

ut then again there aren’t too many people like Jeannie Fernsworth. That’s because Fernsworth is like a meteorite – swift, bright and all encompassing. In laymen’s terms she’s a visionary, botanist, intellectual, advocate for children and families and a community activist. To some this moniker might be a bit controversial. But not to this renegade. “A community activist has a responsibility to their community and to themselves. I wear that mantle proudly,” said the co-founder of the Delay Beach Children’s Garden. As Reverend Paul Kane of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Delray likes to say, “Jeannie is a true renaissance woman who walks the walk. The Children’s Garden, that she co-founded, is a jewel in our community. Children go there with parents and grandparents and connect with nature.” Connecting with nature is one of Fernsworth’s passions. But to say it’s her only passion would undermine her vast natural resources. She does, however, have a degree in Botany horticulture and worked at the New York and Brooklyn Botanical Garden. But that is only part and parcel of a woman who took a three month moped ride through The Cévennes to Paris. It wasn’t mere wanderlust that motivated this young woman, it was something more cerebral. “I read about Don Quixote’s travel adventures on a donkey and decided I would do the same thing. I slept in nunneries and would tell stories.” You could say that Fernsworth is the ultimate story teller. It’s part of her DNA and a by-product of her intellectual heritage. Her father Lawrence was a foreign correspondent for The New York Times and The London Times and was head of the Foreign Correspondents Association. He hung out with anarchists and republicans in France and Spain and knew historical figures like Winston Churchill and Ernest Hemingway. “One day my father was in a hotel lobby in Spain and Hemingway came up to him and said, ‘Larry that was a first rate article, we need to get this information out.’ My dad replied, ‘And, you are who? Hemingway replied, ‘I’m Ernest Hemingway.’” Like her father Fernsworth sought out adventure and diversity. When she was in high school in Virginia (where she was born), she spent time at the drama department at University of Virginia. “It was an all male college and they needed women in their plays. After school I would read the parts.” Fernsworth also worked at Liberties Bookstore in Boca Raton when it was at its zenith. “Liberties was the heartbeat of intellectualism at the time. One day CIA Agent Tony Mendez and espionage historian Keith Melton came in to take pictures of themselves standing next to their new book Masters of Disguise. It was later made into a movie called Argo.” You can bet there weren’t too many other people who knew what was happening that day. But Fernsworth’s pedigree and curiosity usually

lands her a front row seat (and wide angle lens) tilted toward humanistic integrity and diversity. “Jeannie has an encyclopedic knowledge and wealth of information on a variety of subjects. Anything she puts her hand on is going to be marvelous. She’s a free spirit with a generous heart,” said her friend Jill Karlin, artist and VP of Gray Mockingbird Community Garden in Lake Worth. Karlin is right. Fernsworth is as adept at helping people as she is at nurturing Mother Nature’s offspring’s. She has volunteered for various organizations and ran “Project Grow” for Adopt a Family, a social service agency in Lake Worth. “I went to funeral homes and got buckets of flowers for the kids to learn flower arranging. Even the boys made flower arrangements. They would take them to their teachers and it became a language of forgiveness for at risk children.” But the crown jewel of Fernsworth’s work (and current passion) is the hidden jewel of earthly refinement – the Delray Children’s Garden. Located next to St. Paul’s Church, it has a Topiary Zoo, Wishing Wellness garden, Herb and Veggie Garden, Tropical Fruit Trees, a seven-foot Storytelling Chair, Fish and Turtle pond and a Grass River Hut for classes, celebrations and gatherings. The need for a children’s garden is not mere child’s play, according to this mistress of greenery. “If we don’t guide our children to navigate through nature, how can they grow up with an awareness of how to navigate an airport, or the world? We want our children to be strong, brave and courageous. We’re nurturing them, not catering to fear.” Fear is something that Fernsworth seems immune to. She tackles projects with the ease of a Wallenda and has the bravado of Wonder Woman. Just being around her makes you realize that life is infinite and boundaries are for the timid. “Jeannie is a bold and daring pioneer who’s not afraid to think different. She brings a sense of history, diversity and universal understanding of natural harmony. She’s a powerful asset to our community,” said Wise Tribe founder Jacqueline Botting. Power is something that Fernsworth is imbued with naturally. She uses it for the good of those around her, and to make the world a better place. But when asked about her elegant clothing choices, she has this to say, “Clothing is power. The way you wear them is the mantle that you carry.” And for Fernsworth the mantle she carries is omniscient. Just ask the co-founder of the Delray Children’s Garden, Shelly Zacks. “Every day I spend in the garden with Jeannie is a learning experience. She is a plant genius and a powerful force in implementing positive change in the community. The Children’s Garden is blessed to be filled with her expertise, passion and especially her laughter.” We are glad that Fernsworth’s roots are firmly planted in Delray Beach. www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com | August 2017 |

2lb Maine Lobster

The Station House Restaurant Lobster Du Jour And More

If you want to take a walk through South Florida history you can’t do better than The Station House Restaurant in Lantana. The white wood paneled restaurant with the Cape Cod exterior (and interior) was once the Lantana Train Depot.

It’s now a comfy rustically refined are they fresh and cooked to order (upon your request) but other eatery that has lobster as the main character with other lobster dishes have been added for those with a more adventurleading roles well defined within the seafood realm. ous lobster palate. One of our favorites is the Lobster Stuffed Shells The Station House has a long illustrious heritage. Opened 25 that were tasty beyond our imagination. Made years ago it has been a place where Lobster with Ricotta cheese, mascarpone, parmesan lovers came to roost (you could hear the Bosand fresh lobster meat this dish is serenaded tonian accent from the rafters). It wasn’t just in a creamy tomato sauce with mozzarella and the lobsters that had people coming from miles We love the crispy prosciutto. As a seafood purist it dispelled away, it was also the jovial cottage atmosphere lobster here. my belief that lobster does not co-habitat well reminiscent of the Hamptons or Cape Cod. It’s the closest with other creamy ingredients. That said, it was Some things have stayed the same (the food) thing to heaven so delicious that someone nearby labeled it betand others have changed (the owner). But don’t ter than carnal proclivity. despair, there is good news on the seafaring you can find on On the Lobster front they also have Zuppe De horizon. The food is back to its historic roots – the East Coast Pesce (a very popular dish) with Maine Lobster, moist lobsters in sizes of up to 10 pounds that of Florida fish, clams, mussels and calamari sautéed in are brought in from Maine. “We are bringing back the luster to this restaurant and have kept homemade marinara sauce with a side of linmany of the popular dishes that have made it a guini. There is also a wonderful Lobster Roll in favorite for so many. We have a responsibility to keep the Station a toasted bun with romaine hearts and a light lemon aioli sauce. For the more modern lobster lover they have Lobster Wraps, To make sure that lobsters are in abundance they have a Lobster Pasta, Lobster BLT, Lobster Tails and of course Whole

Maine Lobster (with corn and redskin potatoes) either steamed, boiled or stuffed with crab. For starters, we highly suggest their divine Crab Cakes. They’re pan seared with lump crab, homemade remoulade with roasted corn and avocado relish. Freshly made, these crab cakes are superb. If you’re a seafood lover and want to take a temporary break from the lobster frenzy nearby, we highly recommend the Snapper Hemingway. This dish is surely worthy of its namesake and will have you humming with ecstasy. The fish is perfectly cooked – fresh, tender and moist – with a Parmesan crust and lump crab in a lemon caper butter over garlic mashed potatoes. Like a good symphony, this dish is orchestrated perfectly. Also popular are the Crab Stuffed Shrimp with Station House crab stuffing and fresh vegetables. You can also get any of their salads with chicken, shrimp, salmon, mahi or lobster tail added to your greens. They also have fish tacos, fish and chips, Filet Mignon, Bone-In-Ribeye Steaks or Chicken Parmesan. The Station House barbeque ribs are over the moon in flavor and seasoning. This original recipe is made with pork ribs and cooked in a mesquite rub that is tender with ample meat that just falls off the fork (or your fingers). The original Station House has been enlarged with a larger wrap around bar, additional rooms in back and the side, and an outdoor patio with a fire pit and greenery. They now seat 280 people and are proud of keeping this historic culinary landmark in its savory place in history. “We’ve added our own flair to some items on the menu but other dishes are the original. We now have a summer Prix Fixe menu (for $25) and welcome our guests to special events like our recent Lobster Night,” said Chef Wood, who has worked for some of the finest seafood eateries in the country. Their Lobster Night attracted 400 people who feasted on AllYou- Can-Eat Maine lobster with corn, potatoes and cole slaw (for only $55). Over 1,400 lobsters were consumed and guests lined up at 4pm for a table. That would not surprise Kristi Cosentino. The Indiantown resident drove 40 miles to get lobster from Station House with her friend George, who came from Ocala to dine with her. “This is a gem, we love the lobster here. It’s the closest thing to heaven you can find on the East Coast of Florida,” said George. There are a few other things to be happy about at Station House. There’s Happy Hour at the bar from 4:30 to 6:30 with dishes like Lobster Pot Stickers, Smoked Salmon, Baby Back Ribs, Popcorn Shrimp and more. Discounted drinks include the Cucumber MintBerry Lemonade, the Palm Beach Palmer, Peach Basil Martini, Cucumber Martini and others. What would a great meal be without an even better dessert? Their Key Lime Pie is amazing and the Chocolate Dolce Lava Cake is so good it’s on everyone’s wish list (my bucket list). There’s not much not to like about the Station House Restaurant. It retains its familiar historic significance, supremely divine lobster dishes and great service in a cozy Cape Cod setting. What more can you ask for? Not much. THE STATION HOUSE RESTAURANT 233 West Lantana Road Lantana, Florida 561-801-5000 http://www.thestationhouse.com They have ample rooms for private parties. The next All You Can Eat Lobster Night is September 14th.

How Do We Achieve The Best Health For Our Pets?

I

n researching the topic for this question, I decided to look up the definition of health. I went to Wikipedia and was astonished and confused by all the issues and components that so many groups have added to the definition. For the sake of our pets, I want to examine the anatomic and physiological condition of a healthy pet. If we could view our pets in a completely natural symbiotic environment, we would recognize the challenges we have placed on our pets. Through domestication we have changed their physical environment, bringing them into our homes where they are protected from the elements and predators. They no longer have to hunt for food or even lick their wounds when they get hurt. Through selective breeding we have altered their physical traits such as body shapes and sizes. For example, a Maltese may look pretty but realistically has 99% wolf DNA like all dogs. While these pets appear different from their wild ancestors, they still have the same body parts and functions. Let’s observe the wild model for what healthy looks like and then how to maintain it. The body is designed for function, not appearance. Legs are for locomotion, teeth are for tearing and grinding food for digestion, the liver, kidney and lymphatic for cleansing and the heart and gut to keep them alive. So, health is really about keeping the functionality of the body optimal. Let’s reference the wild model. Have you ever seen a picture of an obese wolf or coyote? Usually in our minds, they appear to be suffering from malnutrition and hunger. Can this be their natu-

ral healthy state and body type? In the cat family, do wild tigers ever look obese, mal-fed, or starving? Ask yourself this…do they eat every morning and evening? When did we create the system of food available 24/7 in a dry format? Did this come from the natural model or from a food company looking to sell food? Optimal health is the body functioning in its most natural way. The body is dynamic, always changing. The nutrients required to balance and heal do change throughout the day, week, month and life and are influenced by both toxin and biological challenges. If our immune system is high and we are challenged by the flu, we will never get it. The same is true with our pets. Disease is not caused by a deficiency of a drug. It is caused by the body being out of balance with lack of homeostasis. If you have a pet that is overweight, limps, coughs, has chronic pain, urinary issues, lumps and bumps, tumors, chronic ear, eye, skin, or anal gland issues, they are out of balance and NOT healthy. If your pet is a picky eater with IBD, IBS or other gastrointestinal issues, they are out of balance. You need to seek the experts in health. For more information on these and any other health issues, we at the Ask The PetXpert are only a text, email or call away. Bill Piechocki, nutritionist and Dr. Diane Sudduth, DVM are partners in Fiesta Pet Deli in Pompano Beach, FL, and co-hosts of the PetHealthCafe.com radio show.
