GLACIER HIKING AND ASTRUPSEGGA

The village of Skei, at the eastern end of Jølstravatnet, is a wonderful starting point for walks and adventures for the whole family. Here you can stay at Thon Hotel Jølster, or at one of the many campsites in the area, and enjoy all that nature has to offer.

Haugabreen

Haugabreen is an easily-accessed glacier arm in Jostedalsbreen National Park. Reaching Haugabreen means driving through the stunning Stardalen landscape, and then a small hike is all that’s needed to reach the glacier itself. Bre & Fjell organise hikes throughout the summer, using Thon Hotel Jølster as a starting point. On the way to the glacier, the guides explain the glacier’s role in the formation of the local landscape, and about local glacier history. At the foot of the glacier, visitors can equip themselves with crampons, ice axes and rope to climb the glacier.

Astrupsegga

Astrupsegga is a climbing route that overlooks the area where the famous Norwegian artist Nikolai Astrup once lived and worked. The route starts at Kjøsnes, in the majestic Kjøsnesfjord, and a view towards Jølstravatnet quickly opens up.

Bre & Fjell’s experienced guides take you on the experience of a lifetime. The climb itself is seven rope lengths (about 280m in total), and the most difficult point is 4- on a scale from 1 to 9. Most of the climbing is easy, and this trip lets you focus on mastering the mountain and enjoying the magnificent scenery. The icing on the cake, however, is the view from the top – it’s one of the most magnificent views Jølster has to offer. The path back to Skei town centre runs across light terrain via Vikastøylen.
