SUNNFJORD’S SKIING GEMS

Sunnfjord, nestled between the ocean to the west, and the highest peaks in Scandinavia to the east, is an undiscovered winter gem. When the storms from the west roll in across the land, Sunnfjord’s proximity to the Jostedalsbreen glacier means that it snows. And it snows a lot. Sunnfjord is one of the areas in Norway that sees the most precipitation.

Sunnfjord’s terrain is varied, with slopes of different difficulties, perfect for those who are new to skiing and for those who want something a little more challenging. The peaks and valleys in all directions mean that it’s always possible to find good snow and accessible slopes, even some time after the snow has fallen. There are a number of carparks in the area which are well-facilitated for people setting off on ski trips. Crowds are simply not an issue in Sunnfjord. There’s enough snow here for everyone.

JØLSTRAVATNET – ALWAYS OPPORTUNITIES FOR ADVENTURE

In winter, there are many opportunities for fun and adventure around Jølstravatnet. The terrain is characterised by the many valleys that wind their way around the lake in different directions, and its proximity to the Jostedalsbreen glacier. Here, there are peaks of between 1,200 and 1,800m a.s.l., with fine ski slopes for all experience levels. You simply can’t run out of things to do here!

SPRING SUN AND SKIING ON GAULARFJELLET

The Gaularfjellet National Scenic Route is a perfect starting point for ski trips, both in winter and in spring. When the path opens in the spring, it also opens the door to many wonderful experiences in the spring sunshine.

But winter also has a lot to offer. With climbing skins on your skis, you can reach such peaks as Sunnfjordbjørnen, Blåfjellet and Geitebotsfjellet.

JØLSTER SKI CENTRE – LIFT-BASED OFF PISTE FUN

After a few days of skiing up to mountain peaks, you may be tempted by some lift-based skiing. Jølster Ski Centre is a good option.

The ski centre, which is run by the community, has lifts to take you up to well-groomed slopes and off-piste adventures. The ski centre is also a good starting point when skiing up to Kvamsfjellet.
