Snow and ice removal for the home and driveway By Staci Giordullo, Angie’s List (TNS) While a fresh blanket of white snow is a beautiful sight, the inevitable task of removing it can become a back-breaker if not done properly. In addition, some snow removal techniques can damage your driveway, sidewalk and landscaping. To avoid making costly pavement repairs or replanting your flora this spring, scoop up these tips on removing ice and snow. Get your gear ready When a weather event or emergency hits, you expect the snow blower, chain saw or generator equipment to start on command. The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute, which represents all the major outdoor power equipment manufacturers and suppliers, advises that equipment owners follow these steps regarding fuel to keep winter and emergency equipment ready to work. • Consumers should consult their operator’s manual, which explains what fuels can be used to maintain a properly functioning product. Use of non-approved fuel in outdoor power equipment may negatively affect engine performance and

longevity, permanently damage the engine and may void the manufacturer’s warranty. • Select the correct fuel for the product from your local gas station, including the correct ethanol content. Do not use fuel containing more than 10 percent ethanol in outdoor power equipment, small engines and utility task vehicles. • Drain the gasoline tank when the equipment will not be in use for more than 30 days. Untreated gasoline (without a fuel stabilizer) left in the fuel system will deteriorate, which may cause starting or running problems and, in some cases, damage to the fuel system. What’s the best way to clear snow? The best practices for removing snow depends on where you live and how much snow you’re dealing with, says Marsha Lake, owner of Lake’s Lawn & Landscape in Keego Harbor, Mich. “The biggest mistake homeowners make is waiting until it snows before asking for our service,” she says. “By that time, our schedule is full.” Lake says her snow removal service includes

atHome

plowing the driveway and shoveling the sidewalks, walkways and porch. Fees range from $25 to $50, depending on the size of the property. However, if you consider shoveling snow to be your winter-weather workout, there are some methods to make the task easier. “If high accumulations are expected, it’s much easier to remove smaller quantities of snow and then repeat the process rather than trying to remove large amounts all at once,” says Kathleen Trong, owner of The Asphalt Doctor in East Greenbush, N.Y. “If that’s not possible, then large amounts of snow should be removed in layers. Most importantly, snow should be removed before it’s packed down by vehicles and foot traffic.” Trong says homeowners should never use ice picks on their driveways or sidewalks, as the damage can be detrimental to those surfaces. “Purchasing a snow blower is a very wise investment,” she says. “Even an inexpensive snow blower is better than shoveling and risking a back injury or heart attack.” Trong also

recommends staking the driveway with markers before snow arrives. “Especially if removal is being done by someone who isn’t familiar with the landscape,” she says. Our experts also remind homeowners to be respectful of your neighbors when shoveling snow, and don’t pile snow on their property. “Don’t throw snow into the street – it creates a driving hazard and also when the plows come through it will be pushed back in front of driveways and cars parked on the street,” Trong says. Don’t kill your landscape with ice melt Over the years, several effective deicing products have been developed to eliminate slippery surfaces. However, some of them may end up damaging plants in the landscape, flooring in your house or harming pets. Here are the most common deicing options, and how they might affect you: • Sodium chloride: While generally the least expensive deicing product, rock salt doesn’t work well in temperatures below 25 degrees and can leach

into the soil, changing the chemical balance to toxic levels. • Calcium chloride: Works well at temperatures below zero and is considered less harmful to vegetation. But it can leave behind a slippery residue that can be harmful to carpet, tile, shoes and your pet’s feet. This product can be up to three times more expensive than rock salt, but you don’t need to use as much. • Calcium magnesium acetate: Can cost 10 times more than rock salt, but it’s salt-free and biodegradable. It won’t harm the environment and is less corrosive to concrete than salt. • Urea: Primarily used as a fertilizer, urea has a lower potential to damage vegetation compared to potassium chloride, but it still has the potential to burn your lawn, shrubs and other plants. It can also contaminate runoff water with nitrates in the spring. Boulder-area home sales close 2015 strong BOULDER – Boulder-area home sales showed growth in the final year-to-date data for 2015, despite the continued challenge of low inventory, according to Ken Hotard, vice president of public affairs for the Boulder Area Realtor® Association. “December closed 2015 very strong year-over-year for single-family homes and in attached dwellings the area basically matched last year’s sales,” says Hotard. Sales of single-family homes in Boulder County improved 11 percent yearto-date through December 2015 compared to the prior year with 4,869 units sold versus 4,385. Monthto-month sales increased 24.4 percent in December

versus 92. “At this point, given the economic factors affecting the condo/townhome market, I’d say that’s pretty solid,” says Hotard. Hotard cites lack of inventory as major factors in both housing markets, particularly for condo/ townhomes. Inventory of singlefamily units dipped 20.2 percent in December compared to November – declining to 584 units from 732, while multi-family unit inventory decreased 21 percent – 67 units versus 86 – over the same period. “We’re not seeing production of new for sale owner-occupied multi-family units at any meaningful level, even

Looking ahead to 2016, Hotard expects demand to remain strong, but inventory will continue to be a significant challenge. Many national-level forecasters “suggest we’ll have a year of growth but it won’t be as robust as 2015,” he adds. “I think I would probably concur with that. The Boulder area markets are likely to reflect that national trend.” For more information contact Tom Kalinski at RE/MAX of Boulder. Call 303.441.5620 or e-mail tomkalinski@ mindspring.com.

though there continues to be clear significant demand for that type of product,” he says, noting that the lack of adequate constructiondefects legislation is one reason new condos and townhomes are not being built. “Developers are making other choices because of the potential cost of construction-defects litigation,” Hotard says. Price growth overall was strong throughout 2015 for single- and multi-family homes. “This is a highly desirable area with a highly educated workforce that is growing,” he notes.

Tax break for homeowners with short sales at risk LOVELAND – Seems like Short Sales are now a thing of the past, but there are still situations that deem a Short Sale necessary. The tax break for homeowners with short sales expired at the end of 2014. Congress has yet to renew this tax break for another two years, so it’s currently uncertain whether homeowners who completed short sales during 2015 will have to pay additional taxes. Below is an update on what the tax break is and how it may impact your taxes. What is the forgiven debt When you go through a short sale, the lender who owns your mortgage is essentially forgiving part of your debt since they are accepting less than what is owed on your loan. For example, if your loan balance is $300,000 but the lender agrees to a short shale where they net only $250,000, then the amount of debt forgiven is $50,000. How forgiven debt affects taxes Normally, the amount of forgiven debt is considered as income. So, if your lender forgave $50,000 of your debt, that amount would be reported as income for 2015. This means that you would pay taxes on that income (and it may actually put you into a higher tax bracket than normal). Impact of the tax break The tax break previously signed into law allowed homeowners with short 4

sales to avoid paying taxes on the forgiven debt. Without the tax break, it might be better for a homeowner to allow a property to go into foreclosure rather than trying to work with a lender to sell it beforehand as a short sale. The tax implications of a short sale would otherwise create an additional hardship for homeowners. Short sales are normally better for everyone involved. Foreclosures are expensive, so lenders may get more money from a short sale than a foreclosure. Homeowners can benefit as well. Foreclosures impact a homeowner’s credit history a bit more than a short sale would. Given these benefits, it is likely that Congress will renew this tax break, but that has yet to be seen. If you completed a short sale in 2015, it may be best to wait until this is decided. Suzanne Plewes is a Broker Associate at RE/MAX Alliance in Loveland. Radon testing What is Radon and why should I test for it? Radon is a cancer-causing radioactive gas. You cannot see, smell or taste radon, but it may be a problem in a home. The Surgeon General has warned that indoor radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States today after smoking. It is a common misconception that certain areas of the United States are not at risk for radon. In fact radon can be found in high levels in every state in the country; it doesn’t discriminate between new or old homes, brick or frame, basement or no basement. DRESSED-UP DRESSERS or cabinets undercover Written and photographed by Patricia Sheridan, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (TNS) HIGH POINT, N.C. – Whether dressing up a dresser, covering a cabinet or embellishing a bureau, furniture makers are adding layers of interest with digital images and natural fibers such as linen, seagrass, paper and metal. In showrooms this spring, consumers will see storage units, tables and consoles with enough panache to become the focal point of a room. At the Fall Market, Thibaut delivered several variations of casegoods covered in raffia, linen, grasscloth and paper. It’s all made in the United States, including custom creations with more than 200 Thibaut fabrics. The company’s Paperweave in White cabinet has contrasting pink doors made of extra fine sisal, and the Regatta side table is wrapped in navy raffia. Also using natural fibers to build heirloom pieces is Bungalow 5, which pumped up the appeal of its lacquered grasscloth-covered four-door Janak large chest with diamond-patterned brass nail heads. It comes in navy or white. Currey and Company’s Cadena three-drawer chest also uses textural elements to get the most bang for the buck. The wood frame is enveloped in black linen, which becomes a backdrop for solid-brass drawer pulls and drawer collars. Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams introduced its multipurpose Weaver chest, which is wrapped in a gray raffia and outlined in dark-stained mahogany. The inside of the drawer is red lacquer. The chest can be used in a bedroom, entryway or as a media cabinet because there are

cutouts in the back for cords. It looks great with the Weaver mirror hanging above it. Bernhardt and Selamat, meanwhile, managed to enhance and entrance with skins of metal. The Barcelona Sideboard is handcarved reclaimed teak covered in German silver, which is not really silver but a silver-white alloy of nickel, copper and zinc. It’s also found on the Essen cocktail table. “German silver has been used in architectural structures and decorative elements for more than 2,000 years and has many of the same characteristics as brass and bronze. We add a protective topcoat to prevent oxidation,” said Tammi King, Bernhardt’s marketing coordinator. Selamat’s Milan Bar cabinet design comes from the Florence Broadhurst archives, which the company has accessed and repurposed. Ms. Broadhurst’s Milan Tapestry pattern was carved into the doors, and the entire cabinet is clad in brass on a black steel base. The interior has a mirrored back and glass shelves surrounded by a walnut veneer. Ms. Broadhurst was murdered in 1977, and her killer was never caught. However, her visionary designs live on, continuing to capture the imaginations of consumers. Going digital is John Strauss Furniture’s Lake Shore Watercolor console, which is adorned in a painterly palette. The doors of the lacquered piece are covered in digitally printed wallpaper for dramatic impact.

LAWN AND GARDEN

A Super Bowl of plants BOULDER COUNTY – Here we go again – our dreams of a championship season are back, hope resting on whether our superstars are tough enough to weather anything thrown at them and still look fabulous in orange, blue and white. Pink, purple, red and yellow is okay too, as long as they give us dramatic pinwheels, mile high spikes, or daring snaps. In celebration of Super Bowl 50, we asked the pros at Denver Botanic Gardens, Plant Select and All America Selections for their top picks for a Super Bowl of plants. What these sage plants people tell us we need in our starting lineup are petunias. Plus some zinnias, Echinacea and a lot of Blonde ambition. Like our very own Peyton Manning, Blonde Ambition blue grama grass is selected as the number one seed for the team by Plant Select’s Executive Director, Pat Hayward. Durable and adaptable, Blonde Ambition was voted the MVP two years in a row in the Plant Select® demonstration gardens performance survey. A vigorous form of our native blue grama grass, Blonde Ambition grows in sunny spots with little to no additional irrigation beyond natural

CAROL O’MEARA CSU Extension

precipitation. Unassuming in spring and summer, the mounds of mediumgreen, fine-textured grass explodes with drama when showy, chartreuse seed heads high above the leaves in fall and winter. Plant Select’s second all-Pro choice has a name to match its performance: Hot Wings®. One of the highest team scorers in the performance survey, this Tatarian Maple was rated in the top 10 performers in all but the highest elevation gardens. Hot Wings® is a smaller ornamental tree getting its name from the brilliant, flame-red seed pods (samaras) produced in June, and lasting through most of the summer. It’s extremely tolerant of our challenging gardening conditions, and grows in full sun or partial shade. Dan Johnson, associate director of horticulture and curator of native plants with Denver Botanic Gardens,

anchors his line with BigTooth Maple (Acer grandidentatum). This native tree from Western canyons and mountainsides is underused for inexplicable reasons, says Johnson. Perfectly proportioned, this Rocky Mountain version of the famed sugar maple is an ideal small tree for compact gardens. It’s tough, drought tolerant, and produces fall colors that rival their more delicate eastern cousins. Johnson also appreciates the power of blitzing, and lists Profusion Series Zinnias as first string starters. “This series of Zinnia hybrids took me by surprise. Plants are uniform domes of saturated color that start blooming early and last all summer long. They thrive in heat and tolerate dry spells easily once established. Each daisyshaped bloom last for weeks – pair these with blue or purple Angelonia to stop people in their tracks,” he said. For sheer performance from coast to coast, All America Selections puts up a roster of winners, says Diane Blazek, executive director. Petunia Wave® Purple Classic set the standard for the wildly popular Wave series, and was an AAS Winner in 1995. Like Von Miller, Wave covers everything;

Plant experts recommend petunias in the starting lineup of Super Bowl of plants. smothering slopes or hanging like a curtain from baskets and window boxes. Outstanding along borders or rising above mass groupings, Cheyenne Spirit is an AAS Echinacea that produces a mix of flower colors from purple, pink, red and orange to lighter yellows, creams and white. Sow several seeds from the packet to get the wide range of flower colors. As an added bonus, ‘Cheyenne Spirit’ does not require a lot of water and stays upright, even during wind, rain, or a bruising tackle. Scouting reports from the big three plants people list these hot prospects as rookies to watch: Plant Select’s Standing Ovation little bluestem (2016), Mini Man™ viburnum (2016), Coral Baby penstemon (2015),

Windwalker® big bluestem (2015) and Undaunted® ruby muhly (2014). All America Selections welcome rookies Impatiens SunPatiens® Spreading Shell Pink (2015) and Mascotte beans (2015). And Denver Botanic Gardens keeps the veteran Agastache rupestris, Sunset Hyssop, in its lineup. Colorado State University Extension, together with Boulder County Parks and Open Space, provides unbiased, researchbased information about consumer and family issues, horticulture, natural resources, agriculture and 4-H youth development. COVERPROFILE

BRENNAN BY THE LAKE New community in Erie will offer new homes dedicated to low-maintenance living, and are designed to provide that special something...free time.

By Adam Martin. Photography provided by Boulder Creek Neighborhoods.

F

or months, folks traveling on Erie Parkway just west of County Line Road have been wondering what will be built at the construction site on the corner of Erie Parkway and 119th. Late last year, Boulder Creek Neighborhoods answered their question, announcing their newest lowmaintenance neighborhood coming to Erie – Brennan by the Lake. Hot on the heels of the closeout of their low-maintenance townhomes in Erie Commons, Boulder Creek started development of this new Erie community in 2015. Now, gearing up for an interest-list only launch 10

AT HOME

event in March, the builder is releasing even more information. Brennan by the Lake will feature Boulder Creek’s popular ranch-style easyHouse home series. These lowmaintenance patio homes have a proven track record in other communities, like Loveland’s Lakes at Centerra, and with all that Erie has to offer, Brennan by the Lake has the potential to be yet another award winning neighborhood for the builder. What is an easyHouse? “EasyHouse is the epitome of a ranch patio home,” says Boulder Creek President, David Sinkey. “We’ve combined years of

design expertise, as well as homeowner feedback and ideas into creating a home series that offers exactly what buyers are looking for in main-floor, lowmaintenance living.” Sinkey explains further, “easyHouse is a bit of a different animal in the world of new homes.” easyHouse offers a smaller square footage and a more efficient design than many typical ranch-style homes on the market today. Many features in the series are a direct result of ideas and feedback from potential easyHouse buyers. The Louisville-based homebuilder takes a straightforward approach to determine what buyers

most want in a new home. They ask. Listening is a core value at Boulder Creek, explains Sinkey, and his team looks for opportunities along the way to learn more about what homebuyers are seeking in a new home. In November of last year, Boulder Creek hosted an event in Erie. The goal was simply to talk to interested buyers about the features that matter most to them in a new home. Over 50 people attended and offered their feedback on the builder’s lineup of easyHouse floorplans. Since then, Boulder Creek has been hard at work analyzing and implementing that feedback, getting ready for a planned springtime launch of Brennan by the Lake. “We strive to build homes for the way people

Daily Camera / Times-Call – AtHomeColorado.com

aspire to live,” says Sinkey. Of course, the homes at Brennan feature Boulder Creek’s signature style of low-maintenance living – meaning mowing the lawn and shoveling snow will be things of the past for buyers in this exciting neighborhood. And though Boulder Creek knows that leaving outdoor maintenance chores behind is often a big motivator, they also know that the home itself has to support the right lifestyle as well. That’s why the homes in the easyHouse series pack a lot of punch in their 1,500 to 2,000 square foot size. Brennan offers homes with main floor studies and flex spaces, three car garages, and even options for upper level family rooms, bedrooms and bathrooms. That’s a lot of flexibility in a single home January 29-30, 2016

series, and the builder wouldn’t have it any other way. Buyers appreciate it as well. “We like the easyHouse concept,” Douglas DeNio said. His wife, Linda, followed up with, “These redefined the meaning of ‘patio home’ for me.” The DeNios are big fans of their easyHouse that they purchased in Loveland at the Lakes at Centerra. Given Douglas’s area of expertise, that’s no small statement. He’s a retired engineer. Throughout the process, both he and Linda asked a lot of detailed questions, never once getting an answer that raised red flags. Instead, Linda said, “We swore we’d never [build] again, but this is different. They’ve done the hard part. We just do the fun stuff.” Vi Schelhaas, another Boulder Creek buyer in Centerra, is familiar with Boulder Creek’s commitment to listening.

When she first toured the model homes in Loveland’s easyHouse neighborhood, she loved the look and feel but felt the size wasn’t right for her. The models were simply more space than she needed. Fortunately, she was invited to a Boulder Creek feedback event. She, along with other potential buyers, expressed their desire for something a little smaller, a little more “right sized.” A few months later, Boulder Creek introduced several new easyHouse designs in direct response to that feedback. These new easyHouse designs will also be offered at Brennan by the Lake. The interior design elements of all easyHouse homes have been crafted to allow for flexibility and ease of use while still remaining stylish. For example, the countertops throughout the homes are slightly raised. The outlets on the wall are

positioned higher, making them easier to reach. Doorways and hallways are wider set. There’s even extra space between the kitchen counter tops and the island. The idea here is to make your home a place where you are comfortable. The space is easy to move around in because it’s been designed with convenience in mind. Finally, there’s the neighborhood, itself. Like all Boulder Creek neighborhoods, Brennan by the Lake will be a beautifully landscaped community when it’s complete, seamlessly

blending the natural appeal of the area with streets and walkways. But there’s more. Located just north of Thomas Reservoir, residents will be only minutes from a host of outdoor activities. There are scenic walking trails, picnic tables, fishing spots, parks and plenty of open space. Brennan will also offer easy access to the thriving community of downtown Erie, complete with a variety of dining and retail options. And Boulder is mere minutes away. That’s what Boulder

Creek aims for – homes and neighborhoods that actually enhance the lives of owners. With Brennan by the Lake underway, Erie residents will soon discover the Boulder Creek difference first hand. Construction of the model homes is scheduled to begin in April. However, Boulder Creek VIP’s will get a sneak peak of floor plans and VIP pricing as early as March. If you’d like to be added to the VIP interest list, visit www. LiveBrennan.com, or call Jennifer Edewaard at 720.606.4340.

Knowing the floor cleaning don’ts It’s a no-brainer that wood flooring and moisture don’t mix, so you’ll want to avoid any cleaners that involve a mop and bucket. Getting your floor wet can cause the wood to expand, warp or even buckle. Solutions using vinegar or ammonia are too harsh for hardwood floors and can leave behind residue. Steam cleaners are also a big no-no for hardwood, since the steam can actually crack the wood. Similarly, commercial polish, waxes, abrasive soaps and floor cleaners can damage your floor’s finish. Most newer homes have

Dear Les: Hardwood floors are a beautiful addition to any room and can really boost home value. Installing hardwood flooring can also be a big investment, so proper care and maintenance – including cleaning – are important. Laminate flooring is a bit more durable, but using the wrong cleaning supplies on hardwood can damage the wood and cause it to warp or even crack. So, here are some cleaning tips to help you safely care for your hardwood floor.

Dear Angie: What’s the best way to clean a hardwood floor? – Les G., Baton Rouge, La.

finished hardwood floors that can withstand a small amount of moisture. But if your floor is unfinished, you’ll want to avoid liquid or water-based cleaners altogether, since even a small drop of water can leave behind a stain. Choosing the right cleaning supplies Whether you’ve chosen a solid hardwood floor, or more durable engineered hardwood or bamboo, you’ll want to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when it comes to choosing cleaners. If you purchased pre-finished hardwood flooring, check with the manufacturer for recommendations on which cleaning product to use. If your wood flooring was finished on site by the installer, find out what type of finish was used and consult with the manufacturer. If you have an unsealed hardwood floor, you can use a solvent-based cleaner or wax made specifically for unfinished wood flooring. You can also buff the existing floor to restore shine. New waxing products should be added to unfinished wood floors every six to 12 months, at most. Cleaning hardwood floors Once you’ve found the right floor cleaner, get rid of larger dirt and debris by sweeping thoroughly or vacuuming with a soft brush attachment.

HOME FIX

How to ensure roof vent is working properly By C. Dwight Barnett, Tribune News Service (TNS) Q: We have a gurgling sound that erupts from our bathtub drain every time we flush the toilet. No water comes up from the drain, and it drains well when we shower. Could something be wrong with the roof vent? A: For waste water to properly drain, there must be air behind the water, which requires a plumbing vent above the roof. In some instances, an automatic air vent or air admittance valve can be used to provide the air needed without allowing sewer gases to enter the home. Plumbing vents provide air to allow the water in the pipes to drain; it is not a vent for odors. If you think of placing your thumb over a soda straw immersed in a glass of soda and lifting the straw out of the glass, the liquid will remain in the straw until you remove your thumb. That’s an example of a vent at work. Because the tub drain and the toilet drain are at the same

height above the main sewer pipe, the vent may be partially blocked, too small, not pitched properly, or it may not extend high enough above the roof. When the toilet is flushed, the rush of water into the sewer is pulling air through the tub drain causing the gurgling noise. First, make sure the plumbing vents extend above the roof. In cold weather, simply run hot water to the sinks and look outside to see if steam is coming out of the roof vent pipes. In an attic, make sure the vents are not blocked or covered. If everything appears to be correct, you will need the assistance of a licensed plumber. C. Dwight Barnett is a certified master inspector with the American Society of Home Inspectors. Hardwood flooring (continued) Don’t use an upright vacuum cleaner with a beater bar, which can dent or damage the floor. To clean the floor, spray a small amount of cleaner on a soft cloth or microfiber mop. You want your mop damp, not wet, with just enough moisture to collect dirt and dust without leaving water behind. Protecting your hardwood floor Between cleanings, you can take steps to care for and protect your hardwood flooring. Wipe up any spills or moisture immediately with a dry cloth. Place rugs in entryways, hightraffic areas and near the kitchen sink to protect your floor from moisture and wear and tear. Put felt pads on chair legs or any furniture that might be moved frequently, and use area rugs January 29-30, 2016

under coffee tables. If you have pets, keep their nails trimmed to minimize scratches, and use caution while wearing high heels – or better yet, take your shoes off at the door. While the color of any wood floor will change over time or with sun exposure, you can take steps to minimize sun fading by closing your blinds when no one is home or using sheer curtains. Leaving sofas, tables and area rugs in the same spot year after year can cause uneven aging, so consider rearranging your furniture once a year or so. HOME DECOR

Nail an industrial chic look by

DECORATING WITH WOOD By Cathy Hobbs, Tribune News Service (TNS) Whether your interior is modern or more traditional, one way to glam it up is to infuse a natural element such as wood. For decades, wood was the standard for quality and craftsmanship. For example, most furniture pieces in the 1950s and ’60s were made of solid hardwood construction, as opposed to veneers. Then, as we moved into the ’70s and ’80s, we began to see furniture made of materials such as lucite, plastic laminate, lacquer and glass. Fast forward to today, and there is a movement back toward craftsmanship and artisanmade industrial pieces that can blend seamlessly into various styles of decor. Reclaimed wood Reclaimed wood is very popular right now and a favorite of

designers. Salvaged wood, when refinished by a woodworker or craftsman, often reveals interesting nuances such as tones and color variations in wood that can be quite attractive for a finished piece of furniture. The cost, however, may not necessarily be a budget item, as the craftsman may account for the work needed to clean and prep the wood in his or her pricing structure. Wood furniture pieces While a dining table or cased good such as a dresser or sideboard may be the first thought that comes to mind for an ideal wood piece, these days you can think outside of the box, as chairs, sofas and other home decor elements such as mirrors and sculptural items are now common in decorative boutiques and retail stores.

Wood accents like a wood side table and tall vessel filled with rope create interesting conversation pieces in this industrial style loft space. (Handout/TNS) Tips for purchasing wood furnishings When it comes to purchasing a wooden piece of furniture, be sure to ask the following questions: • What type of wood is the piece of furniture made of? • Is the wood water-protected? • How should you care for the type of wood? • What is the best way to repair the piece of furniture if damaged? • How should the wooden piece be packed or moved? Where to find it: Good sources Oftentimes, the best places to look for fantastic

furniture pieces involve unlikely sources. Instead of going to large retail stores, think local. In most cases, these pieces will not only involve exceptional craftsmanship, but will also likely be one of a kind or part of limited editions. There are also local or regional juried craft shows held in different parts of the country that are nearly always a source for fabulous finds. Juried shows are those in which an artisan or craftsman must be approved by a formal jury in order to be able to showcase their wares at a booth. As a result, these types of showcases involve artisans of a high-end

caliber. Another source can be flea markets. You never know what you may stumble upon at a flea market, and oftentimes, fine woodworkers will showcase their latest designs at a flea market, as opposed to a larger venue in which they must incur a large entry fee. HOME TIPS

8 ways to create a healthier home, according to science By Sophie Miura, Domaine (TNS) Picking out new dinnerware or buying fresh linens might seem like a purely aesthetic decision, but a string of studies suggest the way you style your home can have a subtle but powerful impact on your health. From the color of your plates to where you charge your phone, we chart the small tweaks you can make to turn your space in to a healthy home. Here are eight easy changes to make at home to boost your health and well-being. Dine with colored dinnerware White chinaware might be the most common dining choice, but studies suggest it’s not the healthiest. Researchers at Cornell University Food and Brand Lab tested the link between plate color and serving size at a New York dinner party. Guests were given a red or white bowl and asked to serve themselves a tomato- or cream-based pasta. Diners who ate white cream pasta from a white plate served themselves 22 percent more than those who ate from a dish in a contrasting hue. Confused? It’s simple. Portions look smaller when they appear against a contrasting color. Something as easy as switching your crockery could have a huge impact on how much you eat, without you even noticing. Turn down the thermostat at night In the depths of winter, the thought of a warm, January 29-30, 2016

Wood accents like a wood side table and tall vessel filled with rope create interesting conversation pieces in this industrial style loft space. (Handout/TNS) cozy bed can be what gets you through the day, but turning the thermostat down while you sleep can have a big impact on your metabolism. Experts from the National Institutes of Health found that sleeping in a cooler room can cause your body to burn more calories while you sleep. It might sound too good to be true, but changing your sheets to lightweight linen or turning down the thermostat could better your health overnight. Wash your linens weekly We know dirty linens can be a hotbed for bacteria and dust mites, but how often should you wash them? Philip Tierno, a microbiologist and pathologist at the New York University School of Medicine, says you can only use bath towels a few times before bacteria breeds. “If you can dry it completely, no more than three times max,” he told Tech Insider. As for bed linen, a weekly hot water cycle is enough to rid sheets of dust mites. If you have allergies, wash your sheets at a minimum of 130 degrees Fahrenheit for a thorough clean.

Add a mirror to your dining room If you’re styling a kitchen or dining room, consider this: Researchers at University of Central Florida have found that introducing a mirror to eating areas can influence you to make healthier choices. Students who ate indulgent food in a room with a mirror said they didn’t find it as delicious or satisfying. Researchers believe it’s because mirrors force us to view ourselves objectively. “A glance in the mirror tells people more than just about their physical appearance,” said researcher Ata Jami in a statement. “(It) helps them to judge themselves and their behaviors in a same way that they judge others.” Create a charging station If your bedtime routine consists of browsing Pinterest on your tablet at night and checking your phone on first rise, we’ve got news for you: The light emitted from your devices is wreaking havoc with your internal clock. A Harvard Medical School study found that

using your phone or tablet at night throws off your circadian rhythm, leading to a bad night’s sleep. Create a charging station outside your bedroom so your phone and tablet won’t interrupt your sleep pattern. If the thought of cellphone separation gives you nightmares, try an app like Twilight, which masks the blue light with a warm filter, allowing you to use the device at any hour. Downsize bowls and glassware This healthy lifestyle trick is as simple as it gets: Switching to smaller plates and bowls can seriously reduce the chances of overeating. A recent study found that halving your plate size can cause you to eat 30 percent less. What’s even better is study participants still reported feeling full because they weren’t actually aware their portions had changed. When it comes to glassware, science says tall, narrow glasses are best. Short, wide glasses give the illusion of containing less liquid, so you’re more likely to overpour.

Add greenery The latest influx of indoor plant hangers and geometric pot stands are enough to entice us to add greenery to our homes, but according to NASA, houseplants are also a great way to improve air quality. Chrysanthemums were named the best at absorbing pollutants, making them ideal for those who suffer from allergies. Styling your home with greenery can also lead to a good night’s sleep. Since plants give off oxygen, placing them on a bedside table can be a great way to boost your well-being as you sleep. Build a home playlist We turn to architects to craft buildings and interior designers to style spaces, but what about sound? Sound consultant Julian Treasure says it’s time for interior sound designers. “It’s about designing not appearance but experience, so that we have spaces that are fit for purpose, that improve our quality of life, our health, and well-being,” he said in a TED talk. Sound is especially important for those living in cities. Traffic noise and living under a flight path can have serious health side effects, including learning issues and even cardiac arrest. Use music as a destressor, and create a home playlist to relax your mind and drown out street noises after hours. HOME IMPROVEMENT

Plumber: Bath to the future By Ed Del Grande, Tribune News Service (TNS) Q: Dear Ed, My husband and I are finally remodeling our 1970s bathroom since we plan to age in place in our present home. Since this will be our final remodel, we would like the latest in bathroom technology. The main focus will be on removing our tub to install a custom walkin shower stall. What futuristic features do you recommend for this shower? – Kate, Rhode Island

electronic shower mixing valve. Electronic mixing or digital mixing valves can give you more shower

A: With custom shower installations, I recommend paying special attention to the mixing valve. If you want “futuristic features,” look into an

options and can be easier to operate than manual hand-turning valves. You mentioned aging in place,

and when you’re older, it can be a lot easier to turn the shower on and off with just the press a button.

DTV+ Performance showering from Kohler.

A nice option with a digital mixing valve is the ability to add a second control unit to the shower. You can have your main control in the shower stall, and a second control outside the shower. Bottom line: If you’re looking to go high-tech, go bath to the future with a digital shower valve.
