The Carolinas Asian American Chamber of Commerce participated for the first time in this year's Thanksgiving Parade (Novant Health as the 2016 sponsor). It is the longest running parade in North Carolina of almost 70 years, having been founded in 1947. The Asian American community was the largest group participating, in what was considered the biggest parade in the Carolinas. Grammy awardee Anthony Hamilton was Grand Marshall, leading 17 marching bands, including the North Lincoln HS Marching Band, winner of the 2016 Battle of the Bands. There were more than 35 different walking groups, many colorful floats, beloved mascots, & fanciful "characters" on stilts and segways (these balloon figures said to be invented by Robert Krumbine of Charlotte Center City Partners, main organizer of the parade), and huge iconic figure balloons. It was watched by an estimated crowd of 100,000 people ( and 1.5 million more on TV). Mayor Jennifer Roberts was in a white Christmas sleigh drawn by horses, with Ms North Carolina, McKenzie Faggart as Mrs. Claus. Ms South Carolina Rachell Wyatt was also there. Many celebrities performed on floats, among them, Jane Koons (Charlotte Music Awardee), Kristy Lynn, Teresa Guidry (country pop star) from Albemarle, on a real stage coach of Wells Fargo Bank, songwriter/singer Kristina Lachaga, 16 yr old Carter Faith Jones, Tyler Mingo, and the Swimmac Olympians. For Ozella Goods, this 94 year old lady's special birthday wish was fulfilled when she rode in one of the floats. When the Carolinas Asian American Chamber of Commerce or CAACC was founded in 1999 by Dr. Ki-Hyun Chun together with Jack Wang, Ben Li, Esq., its primary goal was to unify the growing communities of Asian Americans in Charlotte and nearby counties. There were 13 Asian groups

originally identified and represented. Thereafter, Dr. Chun founded the Asian Festival in 2000, to celebrate the diverse Asian cultures during the Asian American Cultural Heritage Month of May. Through the years, the CAACC or Asian Chamber has prospered and grown, together with the increase in the number of Asian American communities. CAACC has continued to promote, sponsor, support efforts to sustain traditional heritages thru excellence in business practices, education, volunteerism & public service". It acts as a Business Development Council to attract Asian investments in the region, does leadership training of new Asian community leaders; has an active program to help in refugee resettlement, providing assistance in securing social services & business development. CAACC has been a partner of Crossroad Charlotte since the early beginning, to advocate for diversity and inclusivity, including the current issues of upward mobility. It also has a mentoring program for Asian high school students & a wellness program for seniors. It has a Small Business Resource Center offering some consultancies. The CAACC has greatly enriched the cultural landscape of Charlotte and the environs, far more than was envisioned by the founders. Thus in 2003, the 2nd CAACC President, Dr. Nini founded the Miss Asian Festival, to engage the young generation in the celebration of their own cultural heritage and take pride in being Asian Americans. The following year, CAACC assisted in the CMS first Chinese Language Program. In 2005, Dr.John Chen founded the Charlotte Dragon Boat Festival, to reach out to the corporate world and other mainstream organizations in Charlotte via the fastest growing sports in the country, for team building. In May 2008, The Miss Asian Festival

morphed into Miss Asia Carolinas, a Multicultural Showcase, and was expanded to include pre-teens. In October, 2008, the Gandhi Park was inaugurated under the Carolinas Asian Heritage Association of CAACC. CAHA President Gary Bhojwani founded the Gandhi Unity Festival with the help of wife Bina & his family and current CAACC President Nimish Bhatt, who leads the programs for refugees and seniors. Phin Xaypangna, the 2nd CAHA President started the "I am Asian" annual essay contest in 2015, to encourage students to delve deeper into their Asian roots. This year, in May 2016, the first Asian Music & Dance Fest was founded by Dr.Nini, to recognize the artistic accomplishments of all Asians, with the winner, 9 year old Evan Xie going to Hollywood to perform at a Red Carpet Event, produced by Jeff Cheen, Founder of the Charlotte Music Awards. As the region's leading Asian organization dedicated to fostering cooperation and partnerships, the CAACC was invited to the Thanksgiving Parade by the organizers, Charlotte Center City Partners. CAACC was one of the biggest group in the parade, highlighted by a towering 50 feet tall helium-filled Golden Dragon balloon of the Peaceful Dragon led by Eric Sbarge and the Lion and Dragon Dance Troupe. The humongous balloon was carried by the members of the Charlotte Dragon Boat Association (led by Dr. John Chen & Mylene Clemente). CDBA also helps organize the Charlotte Dragon Boat Races at the annual Asian Festival at Ramsey Creek Park, Cornelius. The colorful dancing groups surrounding the signature Golden Dragon balloon were from the Indian communities led by Sharada Gullapalli and Chinese

Asian cultures represented in Charlotte encompass over 13 nations. One of the missions of the CAACC is to unite all of these groups to better service the public. Asian history spans thousands of years and its culture is rich and diverse. The CAACC strives to provide business opportunities and to promote business activities through cultural events, such as the annual Asian Festival & Dragon Boat Races each spring and Asian celebrations in the Fall that display our resources and share with you our ethnic qualities. Forty five years ago, there were less than 200 Asians and only 8 Asian businesses in the Regional Charlotte Area, but this number has grown to 72,000 Asians and 1,150 businesses directly involved with Asians. Considering average gross sales of $630,000 a year per business, the Asian population of this area is generating $725 million in revenues, contributing greatly to the regional economy. We invite you to join the CAACC for unique resources, and then cross the bridge between the East and the West.■ Dr. Ki-Hyun Chun (Founder & the first President)

FILIPINO AMERICANS CELEBRATE 29 YEARS of SERVICE The Filipino American Community of the Carolinas, the only Filipino association in Charlotte and environs, which has withstood the test of time, the vicissitudes of circumstances, (yes, even the "slings and arrows of outrageous fortune" & fate), celebrated its 29 years of existence, with a FILIPINIANA

working, dedicated officers and equally passionate volunteers. It also was able to embark on many projects to give back to the community & help the needy. Since 2012,some were done more feasibly, thru the Filipino American Spirit, a 501 (C) 3 , tax free, tax deductible entity for education &

BALL. It was held on November 12, 2016 at The Oasis , University City., with more than 430 in attendance, some coming from as far as Fayetteville,Winston- Salem, Raleigh, Albemarle, Gastonia, NC, Columbia, Greenville, Asheville, Hilton Head, Rockhill SC, Florida, etc. The FACC Galas , started in 1998 by the Joaquins with the help of the early Filipinos in Charlotte, paved the way for the formation of a vibrant community of Filipino Americans in the area, who were nuclear & power engineers, health professionals, (doctors, nurses, physical therapists, medical technologists, etc.), teachers, accountants in banking institutions, military personnel and managers/ employees in local businesses, and lately IT specialists, and retirees from UN & International organizations. Through the years, the Filipino American Community of the Carolinas, prospered and grew, under the leadership of the hard

culture. Such projects were:villages of houses for the poor (Gawad Kalinga/Ancop), disaster relief,( local and abroad), scholarships at all levels for the needy, (thru Ancop, Peace Corps Foundation) , helped start the Eskuelahang Munti for the teaching of Tagalog & Filipino culture, establishment of a Philippine Cultural Resource Center & Filipiniana Library at the Asian Library. The mission and goal of the FACC which is the preservation of the Filipino cultural heritage for the succeeding generations, has been manifest in the many events and member activities such as the Spring Fling/ Easter Picnic to welcome new members, the participation in the Asian Festival via the cultural booth, Filipino food booth, Dragon Boat Race, Miss Asia Carolinas Multicultural Showcase, the Asian Music & Dance Fest. Others are the traditional Flores de Mayo/ Mayflower Festival, the Philippine Independence Picnic, Rosary Fiestas/ Simbang gabi, field trips for senior

members, participation in the Gandhi Unity Festival in the fall. Tthe main event of the season, the Annual Gala, is a formal dinner dance with a cultural show, and lastly, the Christmas Party & General Election in December. In between, there were also participations in the events and festivals of the other Asian communities (Korean Goodbye to the Old Year, Vietnamese Tet Festival, Chinese New Year, etc.), in the spirit of unity and cooperation. In spite of the reduced number of Board members this year, and their late start, the FACC Board 2016 was able to fully serve the community with all the traditional events and activities, and more. The officers are to be commended for a successful administration, especially for the outstanding success of the 29th Gala. There were notable improvements which contributed to this such as the early distribution and sale of the Gala tickets, with the security wristband already attached, (to avoid the long lines at registration); the pre-assigned table seatings, a bigger venue with a bigger dance floor to accommodate the bigger attendance, adherence to the schedule of the program, an interesting & short cultural program,

an exceptional DeeJay "Tut" aka Aaron Bryant providing popular & danceable music, (though perhaps something more was to be desired from the beef and salmon plated dinners, & the service, but given the

number of attendees, the limited wait staff tried their best). The wonderful array of Filipino native delicacies or "kakanins" later served at the dessert buffet made up for it ( sapin sapin, biko, cuchinta, leche flan, espasol, ube macapuno and, buko pandan cupcakes, all donated by the Filipino dessert cooks themselves. The festivities started with an invocation by Dr.Chris Villapando, Director of Faith Formation, Charlotte Catholic Diocese, followed by the US National Anthem by Abbie Armstead, the Philippine National Anthem by Ashley Perez & Janne Louise Ave. For the first time in the history of the Gala, there was complete silence and attention when the FACC ladies & a gentleman, walked into the dance floor to play the Anklung, an ancient musical instrument made of bamboo tubes attached to a frame, played by holding the frame at the top left, and shaking the tubes with the right hand holding the bottom right of the frame. It is Indonesian in origin (West Java & Banten Province), but is fast spreading in popularity in Southeast Asia. UNESCO recognizes it as a "Masterpiece of Oral & Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Under the baton of Prof., Cristy Calicdan, the group played a nostalgic Filipino kundiman/lovesong, entitled, "Ma-ala ala mo kaya" (Do you still remember?). The group is composed of Glo Grifehagen, (who

bought the set in the Philippines for Eskuwelahang Munti), Dell & Myrna Fallar, Dr. Lucy Cabugwason & sis Sally Musni, Guia Villapando, Merly Penilla, Cynthia del Mundo, Joan

Under the leadership of Charlotte Asian Heritage Association (CAHA) President Ms. Phin Xaypangna and Carolinas Asian American Chamber of Commerce (CAACC) President Mr. Nimish Bhatt, the Gandhi Unity Fall Festival to celebrate human rights and respect for all human beings was once again a resounding success, especially when we consider that, last year, there was rain and cold to discourage attendance, and, this year, while there was warmth and sunshine, there was fear of violent protest (due to the recent killing of a black man by police) to discourage attendance. This event was held October 1st, 2016, on the Old County Courthouse Lawn, 700 East Trade Street, Charlotte, North Carolina, and drew about 800 people. The event featured performances, food concessions, children’s activities, cultural showcases, vendors, artists, exhibitors, and a traditional outfit photo booth. As in previous years, there was a food vendor that sold delicious Indian food. In addition, this year, we had two new vendors. One of them was a food truck that served delicious Korean cuisine in addition to Western dishes like cheeseburgers, and the other sold delicious shaved ice desserts topped with fresh fruits. The event was sponsored by NC MOM, Charlotte; C2 Education; Mecklenburg County of North Carolina; Chun Group; Integra Wellness Center; Belk; and Charlotte Gujarati Samaj. After the opening remarks and introduction, national anthem, and welcome remarks by Mayor Jennifer Roberts, the crowed was treated to a Palestinian dance performance; drums unity; a unity parade by children; Vaisnava Janato, a favorite song of Gandhi; two Chinese dance performances by Little Lotus; a peace song by Charlotte International School; a Nepalese dance performance; an Indian classical dance performance; a West African dance performance; a Mongolian cultural performance; a Bollywood dance; a Hmong song about honoring and remembering parents’ love and their sacrifices; and a Filipino dance performance. Six special moments were interspersed throughout the program: a garland ceremony where leis were placed around the neck of the statue of Gandhi, a reading of quotes by Gandhi, an announcement

of the winners and participants of the “I am Asian American” essay contest, a keynote speech by Rabbi Judy Schindler, a singing of “We Shall Overcome” in multiple languages, and a candle light vigil to end the celebration. Winners of the “I am Asian American” essay contest were: Nishitha Karumuri (1st place, $500); Noelle A.V. Escobal and Angel Nugroho (2nd place, $250 each); and Mai Ze Yang, Ricky Yang, and Yashushi Yang (3rd place, $100 each). These winners were each handed their checks and had their pictures taken along with the rest of the essay participants who each received a twenty-five-dollar gift card.

Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., being brought to the Gandhi statue as well. Seeing the intent gaze of many students directed at her and realizing that this was a teachable moment, Yang explained to the students that Gandhi was a man from India who showed the world that nonviolent means to protest immoral laws can be an effective way to overturn them without having to kill those who made the laws and that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., had followed Gandhi’s example to overturn unjust laws in the U.S. Yang explained that peace is very important, because if we kill those whom we disagree with just to make our point without using nonviolent means, then both sides end

A group of students attended this event. These students, as in the crowd of 800 that attended the event, represented the various hues of skin tone present in the human race. As one of these students observed elders saying words of peace and unity while placing leis around the neck of the Gandhi statue, he asked Ms. Avonne Yang, a member of the event planning committee, “What are they [the elders] saying?” Yang replied that they were saying words of peace and unity. Yang noticed during her reply that several of the students looked up intently at her and were paying very close attention to her. The same student who asked this question then asked, “Who is that?” while pointing to the statue of Gandhi. At the same time, there was a photograph of the

just killing each other and there will be no one left. This same student became very excited and said, “Oh, I am glad I came! I like peace. I wish_____was here!” It was as if the Universe was an ally in this celebration of human rights and respect for all human beings: One girl, also a student in this group, suddenly pointed to Yang’s hair and exclaimed, “Look, there’s something in your hair!” Yang picked up whatever was crawling in her hair and saw that it was the iconic, seven-spotted ladybug, a creature that is a valuable ally of the gardener, because it eats aphids and other garden pests that destroys the gardener’s plants. Taking advantage of this fact about the ladybug, Yang responded to the students, who were

continuing to gaze at her and pay close attention to her, “Oh, it’s a ladybug! Let’s not kill her. I’m going to let her go. You see, the ladybug is different from us, but she can do something that is very good for our gardens! She eats pests like aphids that eat our roses and garden plants. This is good for us, because we do not have to use poisonous pesticides to kill pests. The ladybugs eats the pests for us. This is an important lesson for you all. Remember that next time, when you meet someone that is different from you, do not fear them. They may be just like the ladybug! Just like the ladybug, they may have a skill that will help you, so do not fear them. Be peaceful to them and get to know them. Don’t kill them just because they are different and you fear them.” The students nodded in agreement and smiles beamed on their faces as they watched Yang blow gently at the ladybug and send her flying on her way without killing her. One little girl in particular looked up in awe at Yang and beamed a huge smile, as if Yang had said and done something profound that resonated with her. This was an “aha” moment for Yang and the children! What a powerful, transcendental moment! That moment in time made Yang realize that it is not the number of people that attended this Gandhi Unity Fall Festival that matters, but the message that matters and the fact that the message was getting through to the next generation that matters! Children are the future, so it is important that they come away with the message this festival was created to celebrate: human rights and respect for all human beings. During this time of racial unrest in the city of Charlotte following the killing of a black man by Charlotte’s city police, this message conveyed to children and understood by them is priceless! This festival achieved such an important transcendental outcome like this which cannot be measured in numbers in attendance or revenues lost or generated. A special thank you is extended to all volunteers, the judges of the essay contest, and the planning committee that includes Phin Xaypangna, Avonne Yang, Maura Chavez, Ann Gonzales, Anand Kothari, Amit Shah, Florami Lee, Holli Adams, Nimish Bhatt, Sunu Sebastian, Rance Xiong, Tue Mai Xiong, Denise Coleman, and Kasandra Tomboc for making this event once again successful and inspirational! A special thank you is also extended to the ladybug for showing us a metaphor of the value of all lives! ■

These are not only physical ordeals but more critically challenges that temper the heart and will, allowing those who forbear to reach a higher realm of awareness. Telling the story onstage “Journey to the West” is a magical story of impossible feats and profound wisdom. Bringing this to life on stage requires an innovation in performing arts and the very best of an ancient tradition. Classical Chinese dance was born millennia ago and enriched dynasty after dynasty. It is an art form that includes flips, spins, high-flying jumps, and tumbling. With these techniques, a skilled performer can give the Monkey King his due capability, but how to travel 60,000 miles in one somersault; fight demons on the ground, in the sky, and underwater; and depict the 72 transformations of the Monkey King? Aiding the storytelling are Shen Yun’s groundbreaking digitally animated backdrops, which serve to extend the action beyond the stage. Dance and scene are synchronized together with an orchestra that includes classical Chinese instruments, creating an experience unlike anything else in the world today. A story from “Journey to the West” will be featured in the Shen Yun 2017 season, along with ancient myths and legends and the profound cultural and philosophical values of the Middle Kingdom’s 5,000 years of civilization. Shen Yun will have their performance at BELK THEATER at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center on December 30 and 31.

They are Montagnards, a term that refers to the tribal peoples living in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. I am an Asian-American WINNER OF I AM ASIAN-AMERICAN WRITING CONTEST Full Name: Nishitha Karumuri North Mecklenburg High School Current Grade: 10th

Jeremy Lin, Mindy Kaling, Jimmy Cho, Michelle Phan, Nishitha Karumuri. What do they all have in common? Although they span across several cities, have various careers, and different skin tones, they share one key thing: they are all Asian-Americans. These influential figures in modern society have overcome several hurdles to be where they are and many of those stem from their ethnic background. Growing up as an Asian-American in today’s world can be quite difficult due to the stereotypes assumed by society and the variety of cultural differences they experience. Nevertheless, an Asian-American upbringing can be quite rewarding. As a fifteen year old AsianAmerican girl, brought up in a South Indian household, my childhood was quite different from others. Since the AsianAmerican community prides itself on excelling in science and

mathematics, I was enrolled in Kumon and received additional homework from School Supplement the minute I could read. Whenever I complained about how my nonAsian-American friends got to play outside in their free time, I would get the very typical “We came here from India to give you a better life. I walked ten kilometers in the rain and blazing hot sun just to get to school” speech. I would work diligently on my assignments so I would be rewarded with the opportunity to play outside, however, it did not always work out in my favor. Nine times out of ten, I was told to go back inside because I would get too tan and my “matrimonial quality” would go down. Being fair skin in the Indian society is highly valued because it is a sign of intelligence, beauty, and wealth. My mom would even apply the very popular Fair & Lovely cream in hopes of having a fairer skinned daughter. These cultural norms very quickly defined my standards of beauty, however, I found other things more important. Throughout my upbringing, my parents would always make negative remarks about those who

aspire to become a singer, dancer, actor, or something untraditional. The stereotype demonstrated in society about Asian-Americans and their career choices are quite true. One has three options: doctor, engineer, or lawyer. Otherwise, they are considered a failure and a disgrace to their family. As following tradition, I set my eyes on becoming a pediatrician. Sooner rather than later, due to my academic success, I was labeled the nerdy Indian kid. They would taunt me about being very smart, not playing any sports, about having bushy eyebrows, and bringing Indian lunches that smelled to school. It became apparent to me that the two cultural societies I was a part of (American and Indian) did not clash well, and I had to begin to make some changes within myself. Not knowing how to develop two facets of myself, I began to assimilate into the American culture. By bringing American lunches and altering my appearance, I began to fit in at school, but slowly, this changed things at home. I refused to go to temples, eat Indian food,

and speak my native tongue at home, thinking that it would solve my social issues. Quite contrary, it did not help my social issues and made me lose touch with my native Indian culture. I was quickly labeled ABCD, or “American Born Confused Desi” by aunties and uncles. This is a problem I believe several Asian-American youth face; finding a balance between their native culture, and modern American culture. As I grew older, I realized finding a balance between my cultures was not as difficult as it once seemed, and it actually helped me become a better person. Growing up as an Asian-American, sometimes it can feel like your life is very restricted and that your parents do not offer you freedom. Many Asian-American youth often compare their lives to the lives of non-Asian American youth and wish their life was as easy and carefree as theirs. I once too, longed to be just a simple American, so I could avoid the stresses I experience today. Nonetheless, I realized that my Asian-American heritage and the way I was brought up assisted in the development of my strong moral instincts, diversified understanding of other cultures, and my resilient work ethic, which makes me proud and honored to be an Asian-American. ◙

ALL-NEW 2017 SHOW WITH LIVE ORCHESTRA

DEC 30-31 | BELK THEATER ShenYun.com/Charlotte I 800.382.1731

“An extraordinary experience.

Experience a Divine Culture

Exquisitely beautiful.” — Cate Blanchett, Academy Award–winning actress

A GRAND PRODUCTION TAKES YOU ON AN UNFORGETTABLE ADVENTURE IN ANCIENT TIMES, China was known as the land of the Divine. Everyone, from the emperors to the common people, believed that their culture was a divine gift. They lived in harmony with the universe and saw a connection among all things. And authentic Chinese culture carried these principles for thousands of years – until it was lost. WE NOW INVITE YOU to visit this lost civilization. To make the journey possible,

“The best! The best! The best!” — Charles Wadsworth, founding artistic director, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center

we had to push the boundaries of performing arts. We combine ancient dance with technological innovations, and historically authentic costumes with breathtaking animated backdrops. We let classical Chinese dance do the storytelling, and share with you the beautifully diverse worlds of ethnic and folk traditions. Filled with an enchanting orchestral sound, this is a stunning visual and emotional experience you won’t find anywhere else.

“It’s the most amazing, uplifting, spiritual journey into the divine! ” — Margaux Brooks, executive film producer and veteran comedic actress

“So fabulous! So marvelous and wonderful! I want to tell all the young people to make sure they go and see this show.” — Margaret O’Brien, legendary Academy Award-winning Actress

“Elegant—very athletic and very skilled!”

“The people who can watch Shen Yun perform, they must be especially selected. I believe only the very fortunate are fated to come, for this is an optimal performance.”

— John McColgan, Riverdance producer

— Choi Yun Xi, Korean President’s Award Winner

ACCOMPANIED BY A LIVE ORCHESTRA: Shen Yun uses ancient Chinese instruments to lead the melody on top of a full Western orchestra, creating an enchanting new sound.

December 2016 (15) The Asian Herald Chinese Section
