Thank you for Choosing Carolina Boxer Rescue! It is our mission to balance the health, safety, and welfare needs of Boxers in the Carolinas (and parts of Virginia) by providing a loving and safe environment for stray, abused, impounded and owner surrendered dogs by placing them in foster homes and ultimately—forever homes. Our entire organization is made of volunteers and we have THE BEST! Looking to get involved? We would LOVE to have you! We have several areas that you can assist us with: Fostering Administration Sponsoring

Transporting Events Donations

*Any and all donations accepted! Donations are tax deductible!* Cash Food/Treats Bedding Collars/Leashes/Harnesses Flea/Tick/Heartworm Meds

What to Expect After your Home Visit Within 3-4 days of your home visit, a CBR representative will email an approval or denial to the main email listed on the application. After approval, the person responsible for your geographic area (called an “Area Coordinator”) will be in touch to see what type of boxer your family is looking for. They will also record any specific dogs you are interested in. If the dog is available, the Area Coordinator will put you in touch with the dog’s foster parent to talk and potentially arrange a meeting. Please do not get your heart set on one specific dog. The dogs seen on Facebook and the CBR webpage may be meeting with adopters now that were approved months ago. We are always taking in new dogs and a potential match may be right around the corner, but also please take note that sometimes we DO have more adopters than available dogs and that could make your adoption wait time 2-3 months.

Have you Considered “Foster to Adopt”? The “Foster to Adopt” option may be a good fit for your family if you are looking to adopt quickly. This option places a boxer in your home almost immediately. While fostering, CBR pays for the vet care but you are required to feed the dog at your expense and transport the dog to its scheduled vet visits. If you should decide that the dog is a good match for your family, you are automatically the first name on the dog’s list regardless of how long you have been approved to adopt, meaning you can opt to adopt your foster dog at that time. If the dog is not a good match, you will continue to foster the dog until he/she is adopted and CBR can place another dog with you whenever you are ready. If this sounds like a good option for you, please let your Area Coordinator know and they can get you started.

BOXER FACTS Character and Temperament □ □ □ □ □ □

Alert and self-assured Playful and patient Intelligent and stubborn High Energy Active Boisterous

Owning a boxer is a commitment that may last up to 12 years - acquiring one demands a true commitment to the physical and emotional health of the dog. Because of their high energy levels Boxers require A LOT of exercise! A tired boxer is a happy boxer and less likely to get into mischief. The boxer is a natural guardian of his home, but should NOT be gotten solely for that purpose. ALL dogs require intensive training in order to perform properly as protection animals. Only those with absolute sound temperaments are suitable. Most Boxers love to chew! Please be sure to provide a chewing outlet for your dog, especially when you are not around. A Kong filled with treats and puzzle toys are some great distractions for chew happy Boxers. Boxers can be destructive when bored. Caring for a Boxer □ □ □ □

The boxer is a HOUSE DOG—PERIOD!- short coats and muzzles make them susceptible to heat Obedience training is essential for a well-mannered dog Very little grooming is required of their short tight coats Providing a quality, grain-free food helps a Boxer’s coat and aids in good digestion o Expect to pay around $50 a month for grain-free food o Suggested brands: Earthborn Holistic, Taste of the Wild, Acana

Boxer Health On a sad note, Boxers have certain health problems that they are prone to, among these are cancers and eye problems. In light of this, if you are considering adopting a Boxer please evaluate whether or not you have the financial means to take care of one. You may consider purchasing pet insurance from one of many available carriers. Financial Impact of Owning a Boxer Boxer owners should be financially prepared for unplanned vet visits. Boxers are not only predisposed to cancer, but can also have skin conditions and gingival enlargement. Cardiomyopathy is a concern and Boxers are also susceptible to bloat. Planning ahead is imperative!

So now ask yourself, are YOU right for a Boxer? □ □ □ □

Are you financially prepared to take care of a breed that is prone to cancer? Can you commit to the exercise and attention level a Boxer requires? Are you ready for a potential 12 year commitment? Can you handle a breed that is late to mature? (Meaning they don’t settle down until 3-4 years old)

In preparing for your Boxer, at the bare minimum you should have: □ □ □ □ □ □ □

Food and Water Bowl + a Stand- Boxers are susceptible to bloat and should have their bowls elevated Leash Collar and/or Harness Dog Bed Crate Toys High Quality Grain Free Dog Food

Boxers RULE but they also DROOL! They pass gas, give wet kisses, jump up to greet you and snore. If a high-energy attention seeking 70+ pound slobbering lap dog isn’t appealing to you, please reconsider adopting a Boxer!

Should you have any questions before you speak with your Area Coordinator, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thanks again for choosing Carolina Boxer Rescue!!
