You will howl with laughter at the ridiculous antics of elderly Mrs Overall, who believes every problem is best solved by a nice cup of tea; lovelorn and panic-stricken Miss Babs; reliably boring Clifford; Derek the handyman, villainous Cousin Jerez, and the rest of the eccentric cast. Acorn Antiques staggers from disaster to disaster, a new plot twist at every turn, while Babs and Mrs Overall preside over the mayhem. They have won many International competitions including The Prague Spring Festival and the Osaka ‘Chamber Festa’. As a founder member of Boys of the Lough he has toured America, Europe and the UK, was awarded an MBE in 1994 and further honoured with the degree of Doctor of Music from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. His playing is poetic, perfectly at one with the music. Phil Cunningham. The world famous accordion player and composer was nominated in June 1996 as one of Scotland’s most influential people, and now works as musical director for television and large theatrical events. In 2002 he received an M.B.E. for his contribution to Scottish music, and has recorded with Mark Knopfler on “Get Lucky”. Aly and Phil have been touring together since 1988 to packed concert halls. Timothy West with The Pavão String Quartet in Intimate letters 21 May

Uppingham School Chapel A dramatic retelling of the passionate illicit love affair that resulted in one of the finest and most passionate string quartets of the 20th century. It was not until 1916 that Leos Janacek’s opera Jenufa began to convince the Prague public that he was more than a provincial organist. The extraordinary work that poured out over the next decade forced them to acknowledge his genius. A year after his Jenufa triumph, unhappily married, he fell in love with Kamila Stösslova, a 35-year-old married woman with 2 children, who became the subject of the String Quartet “Intimate Letters”, which he dedicated to her. Their affair lasted until his death in 1928. His climbs are rated among the very hardest in the world, including new routes such as the first ascent of the ‘Indian Face’ on the Welsh crag Clogwyn Du’r Arddu. Many have a reputation for terrible danger. His book Full of Myself was described by Simon Beaufoy, who wrote the screenplays for The Full Monty and Slumdog Millionaire, as “a beautiful book about an extraordinary person. 7.00pm // £13 // Adult Concessions £11 // Schools £10 Uppingham Theatre Since bursting onto the scene in 1985 with Standing Female Nude, Carol Ann Duffy has probably had more influence on the world of English poetry than any other living poet. Her ability to slide in and out of other imagined lives, her fearless originality, and her preference for using ‘simple words, but in a complicated way’ give her poems an unmistakable voice: clear, trenchant, lyrical, passionate. She has won every major poetry prize, including the TS Eliot Prize and the Pinter Prize, is a CBE, and as Poet Laureate thoroughly enjoyed her audience with Her Majesty the Queen. One of her first commissions was the much praised Last Post, a tribute to two of the last remaining veterans of World War 1. Her poetry is studied at GCSE and A Level, and is a wonderfully rich and varied source of language and imagery. This evening is a chance to hear her read and ask questions. Resigning from British politics, and passionately concerned with the Bosnian Civil War, he became international High Representative for Bosnia in 2002. His latest book A Brilliant Little Operation is the first full account of how the Cockleshell Heroes mounted the greatest commando raid of WW2, on Bordeaux harbour in 1942 told by the man who served in the Special Boat Section formed after it.
