Ashes to Ashes 18 September 7.00pm // £10 Uppingham Theatre On February 21st 1940 it was decided that the former Polish artillery barracks in Oswiecim, would be used as a quarantine camp. for 10,000 prisoners. Five years later at least 1,500,000 people had died in Birkenau Concentration Camp, the single greatest killing centre ever conceived by mankind. People were shipped to Birkenau from all over Europe, and Ashes to Ashes is the story of two of those people. The devastating power of Steve Lambert’s recreation of the world of the Holocaust has been acknowledged the world over. With extraordinary simplicity he conjures up the unspeakable, and a reminder that art can confront and articulate the incomprehensible. The play is an exploration of the human spirit, its resilience in the face of fear and death, a piece that should be seen and not be forgotten. Contains adult material! Scotland on Sunday – “Its power lies in the strength and honesty of the writing and its stark simplicity. Shocking without being gratuitous, and extremely affecting.” www.uppthearts.co.uk 01572 820820 Or in person at Uppingham Bookshop

Female Gothic 25 September 7.15pm // £10 Uppingham Theatre In the unquiet darkness between life and death, a lone, haunted woman tells chilling tales of the macabre and terrifying, illuminating the curious frailties of human nature. The Victorian fascination with tales of mystery and the supernatural created an enduring legacy of Gothic fiction; but it is often the male writers that we remember. Many thrilling and eerie stories from the great female writers of that era have gathered dust and been forgotten. Until now… This dark celebration of female gothic is adapted and performed by Rebecca Vaughan (Austen’s Women, I, Elizabeth). Directed by Olivier Award Winner, Guy Masterson. ‘A production that holds the audience in the palm of its hand…a near perfect piece of theatre.’ The Scotsman. www.uppthearts.co.uk 01572 820820 Or in person at Uppingham Bookshop

7 & 8 November 7.30pm // £13 // £11 Concessions // £9.50 Schools Uppingham Theatre The time is 1897. Mankind is on the cusp of vast technological change, scientific mastery and media innovation. Poised between traditional beliefs, the threat of the unknown and the shock of the new world, an altogether darker fear is emerging. Stretching from London through provincial England to the mountainous wastes of Transylvania, Bram Stocker’s timeless gothic thriller embodies the struggle to break taboos, resist temptation and stop the unknown outside becoming the enemy within. As Dracula’s shadow looms over England a small group of young men and women are locked in a struggle for survival. This brilliant theatrical treatment of Bram Stoker’s adventure blends Victorian Gothic with the contemporary. Specially commissioned live music, powerful ensemble performances and innovative design make Dracula another of Blackeyed Theatre’s exciting and through-provoking theatrical experiences. www.uppthearts.co.uk 01572 820820 Or in person at Uppingham Bookshop

London Contemporary Theatre present Macbeth in PITCH BLACK The UK Tour – Directed By Kevin Williams 12 November 7.15pm // £10 // £8.50 Concessions Uppingham Theatre Experience Shakespeare‘s fast paced drama of paranoia, darkness and despair: the tragedy of Macbeth in pitch black. In this wonderful adaptation of Shakespeare’s darkest play, London Contemporary Theatre take it one level higher, and stage it in the pitch dark. No lights; perhaps the odd torch or mobile phone display, and a bolt of lightning to add to the murderous screams and cackling witches, It’s the words, the beauty and richness of the language, that take centre stage, and despite the darkness physicality comes into the play too – shadow and silhouette are used to great effect. And there are a few other surprises to keep the audience on their toes… Don’t miss an immersive experience with this exciting cutting edge young company. www.uppthearts.co.uk 01572 820820 Or in person at Uppingham Bookshop

The Love Song of Alfred J Hitchcock 23 November 7.30pm South Luffenham Village Hall The Love Song of Alfred J Hitchcock presented by New Perspectives Theatre Company This new play presented by popular regional theatre company New Perspectives, takes a unique look at the way the great filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock developed the ideas for his most famous films, including Marnie, Vertigo and Strangers on a Train. From his director’s chair, the 60 year old Hitchcock begins to imagine some of the defining films of our time. The production explores the director’s childhood memories of his mother and the strict Jesuit priests who schooled him, as well as his later life including conversations with screen writers, feelings of guilt towards his faithful wife and his earliest feelings of love. The result is a haunting character study, presented with all the tension and mystery of Hitchcock’s greatest films. 01780 720687 www.newperspectives.co.uk

Uppingham School presents Pygmalion 27 - 30 November 7.30pm // £9.50 Uppingham Theatre George Bernard Shaw’s play was a West End hit from its first performance. The story of how Henry Higgins, a Professor of Phonetics, makes a bet that he can train a bedraggled Cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, to pass for a duchess at an ambassador’s garden party by teaching her to speak properly, mocks the British class system and is an early expression of women’s rights. Best known as the musical My Fair Lady, the play has a darker side, partly inspired by a child prostitution scandal of 1885. This performance of Shaw’s radical and challenging masterpiece is performed by Uppingham School pupils directed by Clare Gwenin. www.uppthearts.co.uk 01572 820820 Or in person at Uppingham Bookshop

Andrew Lawrence

Shadows 2 - 13 December 10.00am // Free entry Smallbone Library, Oakham School From Florence in Italy to Saana in the Yemen and Aleppo in Syria; from the streets of Cairo to those of Dubai, this exhibition explores the fall of light and the traces of shadow that define the spaces we live in through views of the city. Simon Poppy, Director of Art at Oakham since 2000, spent a month on sabbatical this summer at the Il Bisoni print workshop in Italy, where he was able to develop the core of this show of sketchbook drawings into intaglio, and lithographic prints. Mon to Fri 10.00am-5.00pm, Sat 10.00am-12.00pm Special late viewing (all welcome) Friday 6 December 6.00pm-7.30pm. www.oakham.rutland.sch.uk 01572 758611

6 December 7.30pm // £12 Uppingham Theatre Andrew Lawrence is not known for his chirpy view of the world. In fact for nearly a decade he has been writing jokes of such dry wit and caustic humour you can’t help but wonder why audiences find themselves laughing so much. He has mellowed recently (without losing all that vitriol), but within the first 20 minutes of tonight’s new show he covers overpopulation, suicide, stealth euthanasia and various other non-PC subjects. At his best when he launches into one of his lyrical diatribes, the comedian The Guardian said ‘could be the defining stand-up of his generation’ is not to be missed! ‘Near perfection.’ Independent ‘A breathtakingly literate, dazzling performer.’ Mail on Sunday. www.uppthearts.co.uk 01572 820820 Or in person at Uppingham Bookshop
