MULGA SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA I L L U S T R AT O R Sydney based ar tist Joel Moore or commonly known as Mulga is an illustrator and poet who also paints murals and designs t-shir ts. He star ted his ar t career in 2012, and since then he had held over 56 shows, and took gold at the Illustrators Australia awards in 2013. Known for his unique style of intricate line w o r k & b r i g h t c o l o u r s , M u l g a ’s a r t b r i n g s t o life a world where tropical bearded men run rampant, lions smoke tobacco pipes, tigers wear diamond sunglasses and gorillas rule the world like some kind of funky planet of the apes. The interesting par t happens here: after he finishes an ar twork, he writes a weird and humorous poem to go with it.

Mulga wants to make people smile. He believes there is enough serious stuff in the world so he likes to keep it fun and light hear ted and create his own universe of crazy characters. He also loves adding his ar t to outdoor walls for people to e n g a g e w i t h a n d e n j o y. He doesn’t seek inspiration in current events, he has his own ar t universe that occasionally takes clues from trends in popular Australian culture like the beard trend and more recently unicorns. He has been commissioned to produce ar twork for some pretty big names including S a m s u n g , C o c a C o l a , To y o t a , R e d B u l l , M T V, A d i d a s , V i r g i n Mobile, Jagermeister, Cot tonOn Kids, Flight of the Conchords, Universal Music, Sol Beer, M a m b o , T h e N a t i o n a l Tr u s t a n d A u s t r a l i a ’s G o t Ta l e n t .

CARNEGIE MUIR VICTORIA , AUSTRALIA I L L U S T R AT O R Jay Carnegie Muir is an Australian ar tist who has developed a uniquely recognisable style. His ar tworks bear motifs from Australian culture featuring Koalas, and he says that Australia is his muse, and Koalastralia is his creative expression. When he was just 5 years old, he moved from Scotland to Australia a n d t h a t ’s t h e p o i n t a t w h i c h h e recognised himself as an ar tist. Koala-stralia ar t star ted off in a style that we know from Colombian ar tist Fernando Botero who painted cute, fleshy figures. Muir creates similar figures, however, they have one more quality: they were more ‘Koala’ than human.

Another ar tist who has i m p a c t e d o n M u i r ’s w o r k i s Hieronymus Bosch, whose extraordinar y creativity amazes and i n s p i r e s M u i r . C u r r e n t l y, h e f i n d s t h e i n t e r n e t , w i t h i t s s e a o f i m a g e r y, music, and knowledge the most inspiring source of inspiration. As he matured, he refined his figures and now they have swapped into being more human than Koala. His recent works are narrative b a s e d , t h e y e x p l a i n t o u s w h a t ’s represented and tell a stor y about t h e m a i n c h a r a c t e r s . Muir actually named his ar tworks in an interesting and u n i q u e w a y. T h e y w e r e n a m e d by the main motif that was represented, but also have an addition in the title (most commonly in brackets) that more e x p l a i n s w h a t ’s g o i n g o n s u c h a s Lost (in amazement ) or Made (From local & Impor ted Ingredients) and so on. Drawing in his sketchbooks actually represents dreaming on paper and the act helps him to overcome any barrier to inspiration, especially when stories star t to form. When he creates a new work, a couple of words that he received as a comment on one of his ar tworks on Instagram page ser ve as a guideline. C H R I S K E L LY MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA I L L U S T R AT O R Chris Kelly is a Graphic Designer, Illustrator, and Caricaturist who, for the past 40 years has been permanently attached to his pen. His life is filled with rich travel experiences that he expresses in caricatures and drawings. He tells us that he guesses that he is an ar tist but that he never really feels like he has reached the pinnacle of ar tistic p e r f e c t i o n b e c a u s e t h e r e’s a l w a y s s o m e o n e better and there is always something new to learn and improve. Chris claims that the better you get, the more you can express and the more you can e x p r e s s , t h e b e t t e r y o u w a n t t o g e t . I t ’s l i k e a permanent circle.

He star ted drawing at the age of 30, when he wanted to explain his travel stories to his little niece. After that, he drew all the time, in every situation and especially while travelling. A favourite place to see him sketching is at the local pub in Fitzroy (Melbourne), while drinking beer and listening to a band, or sitting in on a Royal Commission into Malpractices in the Banking and Financial S e r v i c e s I n d u s t r y, o r i n c a f e s , bus stops, or waiting for trucks to appear at some deser t stop.

He also draws a lot of caricatures of people in those places concentrating on improving his faces, and especially on p e o p l e’s e y e b a l l s . He is never worried about staying m o t i v a t e d . W h e n h e g e t s ‘a r t i s t s b l o c k ’, h e r e l a x e s , c o n v i n c e d t h a t t h e r e’ l l b e a n o t h e r i d e a a l o n g s o o n , o r a l t e r n a t i v e l y, he might just star t sketching teapots. All the necessar y circles needed to draw the nice round teapots star ts him off and soon he has completed another drawing, he is freed up and ready to go. When not t r a v e l i n g , Wa l k l e y - a w a r d w i n n i n g C h r i s Kelly lives in Australia.
