M A G D A L E N A B O R KO W S K A HÄGERSTEN , SWEDEN ABSTRAC T Magdalena Borkowska is a Swedish abstract ar tist living in Hägersten, just south west of Stockholm. Her best-selling series called ‘The Beginning’ has a bright, illustrative style sometimes reminiscent o f c u b i s m . “ S a n d y Tr e a s u r e’ ( s e e n o n t h e c o v e r ) , ‘ E x t r a o r d i n a r y Wo r l d o f t h e M i n d ’ a n d ‘Conquered Mind’ (shown left ) are beautiful examples of this series. Magdalena usually paints vibrant works in oil on canvas arising from a par tly unconscious process of creation, however she loves to challenge herself and often experiments with new techniques and styles, w h i c h w e b e l i e v e i s w h y s h e’s s u c h a w e l l rounded and collectible ar tist.

Another series of note called ‘Garden of L o v e’ a r e a m a z i n g l y c o l o u r- b a l a n c e d abstracts, reminiscent of florals with delicate gradients. They are inspired by the magic of love, such as ‘I want you’ (Left ) which was created with the acrylic pouring technique.

For ‘Endless Wa y s’ ( R i g h t ) s h e has stripped back the colour palette to mainly greys and lime yellows, and used a layer of acrylics, followed by layers of oil in fine detail.

Magdalena says “I find my inspiration in the secret, the mysterious and the invisible which is hiding in those endless corners behind t h e f a c a d e o f p e r s o n a l i t y. I dive into the deepest abyss, the hellish, the twisted, the forgotten, the painful, the unknown, the beautiful, the celestial, the good, the pure, a n d t h e e n c h a n t i n g .” With regard to her process, she continues “Some of my paintings require ver y accurate, time consuming and detailed work and some of them are painted using the a c t i o n p a i n t i n g t e c h n i q u e .” (which Pollock famously used). She feels that her ar tworks open the gate between the outer world and the soul.

MAURO BENEDET TI G R O S S E T O , I TA LY ABSTRAC T Ar tist Mauro Benedet ti lives in Grosseto, Tu s c a n y, w h i c h i s a t o w n d a t i n g f r o m t h e middle ages with terracotta sunbaked homes piled on top of each other so that they resemble cliff walls. He speaks only Italian and so we have translated our inter view from Italian to English as accurately as possible. Mauro paints acr ylics on canvas and wood and sometimes on found objects. His style is a mixture of illustration and brilliant geometric pattens, sometimes depicting life around him i n Tu s c a n y s u c h a s o l d b u i l d i n g s , a n i m a l s a n d people. He has his own special and original way of viewing the world, seemingly as if his brain isn’t applying the same filter that many of us have.

O n e o f M a u r o’s earliest memories of ar t is watching a documentary about painter Antonio Ligabue (1899 - 1965). Mauro included his impressions of Ligabue in several paintings which he says are now with several ‘rare and intelligent’ collectors.

Mauro is politically minded and feels a responsibility to confront societal issues, par ticularly the poor state of financial p o l i c y. H e b e l i e v e s that the human being is condemned by the power ful and he is anti-institutionalist in the extreme.

He describes his inspiration as intellectual “I read many books (such as those by Edgar Allan Poe and philosopher G i l l e s D e l e u z e w h o’s w o r k h a s influenced a variety of disciplines across philosophy and ar t, i n c l u d i n g l i t e r a r y t h e o r y, p o s t structuralism and postmodernism) and I form an idea which slowly develops. If the painting continues, it is because I feel it is right. The shapes and colors I have in my mind as I create are ver y precise, and must be accurately transferred onto the ar twork. Spontaneity and unpredictability are the basis of my work, there is nothing pre-constituted. One of his defining moments as an ar tist was at an exhibition of his ar tworks in the Piazza di S p a g n a i n R o m e . Va r i o u s f a m o u s p e o p l e a t t e n d e d and he was the centre of attention, being snapped by photographers. However he states that “The real success of an ar tist is given by the absence of t h e a r t i s t h i m s e l f ”. Environments where such matter exists are relatively rare throughout the Universe, and they most commonly occur in the cores of stars, or stellar remnants. Inspired by that phenomenon, the paint is used in a way that can be associated with that physical process.  Another association is of a social nature of human beings, where the identity of a person can be changed, built, formed because of extreme situations that person has experienced. Igor states “My ar tworks are not easy to read at the first sight.
