Don’t Let Auto Problems Give You The Holiday Blues Advice from an expert on avoiding car trouble when traveling during the holidays

By Ronald Scaglia rscaglia@antonnews.com ver the river and through the woods to Grandmother’s house we go. While there may be no place like home for the holidays, the reality is that many will be hitting the roads this holiday season. Even those who are heading “home,” will likely be relying on their vehicles to get them there. “It’s by far the busiest travel period of the year,” said Robert Sinclair, manager of media relations with AAA New York. He estimates that between Christmas and New Year’s, 55 million people will be on the roads. Getting stranded in an automobile can ruin anybody’s holiday, so those traveling this holiday season should make sure their vehicles are ready to go before beginning their treks. Sinclair said that AAA responded to more than 28 million service calls worldwide last year, with more than 6 million of those calls for dead batteries, more than 4 million for flat tires and about another 4 million for drivers locking themselves out of their vehicles. “These things are easily preventable,” he said. Sinclair points out that stalling in an automobile is not only inconvenient, it can be quite dangerous. There have been recent fatalities as individuals waiting for assistance have been struck by oncoming vehicles. So what should holiday travelers do before taking to the roads? Sinclair has several suggestions, the first of which is to check a vehicle’s tire pressure. He says that a recent study found that about a third of all vehicles have improperly inflated tires, with the majoriMany drivers will be hitting the roads this holiday season, such as the Northern State Parkway ty of tires being under-inflated. Gifts For Men Without The Hassle Items for men that require little or no fitting, but will still delight

By Ronald Scaglia rscaglia@antonnews.com s there a man on your holiday shopping list who’s difficult to shop for? If so, then getting the perfect gift could be a chore. In addition to selecting something that’s fashionable, there is also the task of finding something that fits properly. After all, it’s quite difficult to purchase someone a suit without having him try it on first and then, most likely, having alterations done, Fortunately, there are gifts for men that are stylish and easy to purchase, which most men will be happy to receive. “Men are very visual,” says Victor Talbot Scognamiglio, owner of the famous menswear store in Greenvale. “Men like things that are very unique but functional.” Scognamiglio offers his advice on gifts that men will be thrilled at receiving. All of these are items that will help guys give their nicest appearance possible; yet require little or no sizing.

HOLIDAY GUIDE - ANTON COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS - DECEMBER 21, 2012

Going ice skating, as these folks are doing at Christopher Morley Park, might be a fun new tradition for family holiday gatherings.

A sleigh ride is another fun activity that is appropriate for the season.

Add New Experiences To Your Holiday Gathering

amily gatherings during the holidays often involve everyone sitting around, catching up, while children play with the toys they received as gifts. It’s a wonderful time for family to hear the latest on jobs, trips, hobbies and health, but it can also turn into a tedious repeat of listening to Un-

F

cle Joe’s story of the Christmas of 1954 when the tree caught fire and burned all the presents underneath. If your family gathering needs a little spicing up this holiday season, consider adding new experiences to the plans, and making a new and fun tradition out of them. Here are some ideas to get started:

* Get out and enjoy the outdoors If you live in snowy parts of the country, organize a snowshoe trek, sledding time or ice-skating at a community rink. These activities can bring a healthy glow to your family members’ cheeks, as well as create new memories you can reminisce about at future family gatherings. If you are traveling away from Long Island to a warmer climate, consider planning a bike ride, a hike or even a golf outing to bring everyone together. * Plan a meal away from the house - Instead of cooking all the meals for the gathering, plan a formal brunch or dinner at a nice restaurant, where everyone in your group can sit together and enjoy the food and holiday decorations. * Make the gathering a retreat for all - This year, consider getting your family out of the house and turn your

holiday gathering into a festive retreat. Visit one of the fabulous local holiday displays, gather together and watch a movie or perhaps even visit a spa for a day of rejuvenation. * Host a family talent show Everyone has a special talent in your family, so encourage them to bring their talent to the gathering. Promote costumes or props - if needed - to help enhance the fun. Just clear out a small area in the gathering location, set up a couple of chairs for audience members, and if you have the ability, dim the lights so the stage is in the spotlight. Of course, host a reception following the show with hot apple cider and cookies for all. By bringing new activities to your holiday gathering this year, you’ll be creating many new memories to share in the future, as well as making the event much more enjoyable. (BPT)

Auto Problems continued from page 3

The second piece of advice offered by Sinclair is for drivers to check the condition of their vehicle’s battery. He says that much like tires, batteries lose their efficiency as it gets colder, and he estimates that a battery can lose 30 percent of its cold cranking ability at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, and 50 percent when the temperature dips near zero. Sinclair advises that oxide builds up on battery terminals, and gets between the terminals and the cables, impeding the flow of electricity. Drivers should look for this corrosion, which appears as a white powder, and should clean it. There is a special tool, which can be purchased to clean the battery terminals, or, drivers can take their vehicle to a technician. Sinclair further cautions that the average life of a battery is three to four years. Those with batteries of this age or older should be especially attentive to this to ensure they are not stranded on the side of a road during the holidays. This is especially important for cars with batteries that have already gone dead and were recharged. “If you’ve let your battery go dead, it’s not a simple thing,” advises Sinclair. “You get a jump and you think it’s okay but it’s not. It’s wounded. It loses 9 to 10 percent of efficiency the first time it goes dead, 20 percent the second time and 30 percent the third time. Every time you let it go dead, it’s like sticking a knife deep in the heart of your car.” Sincalir also advises those who own a

vehicle with a battery that is three years or older, or batteries that have already gone dead, should consider replacing it, as the cold weather is a big stressor to the battery. Those whose vehicle hesitates upon being started should be especially concerned, as this is a warning that the battery is weakening. A third bit of advice is to be especially cautious about locking oneself

out of a car. Sinclair says it is not uncommon for drivers to start their engine and let their auto warm up while they wait inside. However, some of today’s vehicles lock themselves after running for a bit, and the owners of these vehicles soon find themselves stranded in the cold. To prevent this, drivers should not leave their vehicles while it is warming up, and if possible, have a spare key, although this can be quite expensive as some of today’s cars have keys that cost several hundred dollars. Some more advice is for drivers to make sure their vehicle has an ice scraper and a brush. When the nor’easter hit Long Island in early November, many drivers were caught off guard and did not have something to clear their vehicles with. Sinclair says to be sure these items are in your vehicle before venturing out in the colder weather. He also suggests carrying a small bag of an abrasive material such as sand, salt or non-clumping kitty litter, which can be poured around a tire to gain some traction should a vehicle get stuck in ice or snow. He also suggests checking the windshield washer fluid and making sure that it is a winter grade fluid capable of withstanding low temperatures. Having an extra quart of oil and a

gallon of antifreeze in a vehicle in case of an emergency is another of Sinclair’s recommendations. He also advises having a blanket and gloves in the auto, in case it does get stuck. Should a vehicle not ignite, it will get cold inside very quickly as vehicles are about 90 percent metal. Having these items can help a stranded driver get by until help arrives. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, Sinclair advises everyone to use common sense when traveling this holiday season. That means not drinking and driving, not getting into a vehicle being driven by someone who has been drinking and wearing a seat belt whenever inside of a vehicle. “If we could get people to stop drinking and driving and to wear a seat belt, we could eliminate 50 to 60 percent of injuries and deaths on the road,” says Sinclair. By following Sinclair’s recommendations, drivers will help to avoid getting stuck when driving this holiday season. And then everyone can get over the river and through the woods to Grandma’s house. Of course, getting there on time might depend on a bit of luck with the traffic conditions on the Long Island Expressway.

3. Cufflinks Cufflinks are another part of an attractive wardrobe. A nice set of cufflinks can add a large amount of style and fashion to a guy’s appearance. And just like cologne, there is no need to fret about selecting the right size, although there is a variety of styles and looks to choose from to help men capture the perfect look. Scognamiglio advises that at his store, shoppers can select cufflinks, which can be engraved, and other cufflinks that contain semiprecious stones. There are also mechanical cufflinks, which contain moveable parts. For example, there is a pair of cufflinks designed like a golfer with the mechanical parts moving to simulate a golf swing. “These are very unique and very popular,” remarks Scognamiglio. “People love them.”

4. Scarves On a cold, windy day, is there anything that keeps someone warm and cozy like a scarf? Everyone, or at least those in areas such as Long Island where the effects of a cold winter are felt, can use a scarf. It makes a nice gift, can be a nice accessory to a wardrobe which provides fashion and comfort, and sizing is not an issue. For an elegant look, Victor Talbots has scarves that are cashmere, silk and crushed velvet.

the best part is there is no sizing required. Gift givers will have to choose which scent they prefer, but smelling all of the sweet aromas can actually be part of the fun of giving fragrance as a gift. “We just launched our new fragrance that’s been doing really well,” said Scognamiglio. “It’s called Victor Talbots For Men. It’s a nice, sweet, long lasting fragrance.”

5. Suspenders Suspenders can make a great gift for a man, especially if his pants keep falling down. In actuality, while suspenders are functional, they are also

fashionable. Scognamiglio says that suspenders are becoming popular again. He says that his store sells suspenders with patterns such as polka dots and skulls and crossbones, which are very popular. 6. Pleated ties and pocket square sets A tie is a traditional gift for a man. To add to pizzazz, Scognamiglio recommends a special tie of high quality. He suggests a pleated tie with multiple small creases to give it a three-dimensional look. For the ultimate tie connoisseur, he recommends ties with 11-fold construction. These ties are folded 11 times to give them the ultimate in balance. “It’s a gift idea that will be remembered and you are helping them look sharp,” comments Scognamiglio. 7, Sweaters Another recommendation for a gift that will keep men warm and fashionable throughout the winter is a nice sweater. For the ultimate in luxury, take a look at seamless cashmere sweaters, which are sold at Victor Talbots. The store carries this style, which comes from Scotland, and are spun from one piece of cashmere, so there is no seam. 8. Shearling Coat Another luxurious gift is a shearling coat. Scognamiglio refers to this as, “a once–in-a-lifetime coat.” He says such a coat is quite luxurious and will keep the wearer extremely warm, even though it is lightweight. If you are still having trouble finding a gift despite these suggestions, Scognamiglio recommends that shoppers stop by his store. He says his staff is ready to help with all of the details to select a gift and send it to the recipient. “We have a special concierge service that’s complimentary,” he says. “If someone is trying to get a gift, we try to make recommendations. We find the gift and then send it to their customer. If someone is kind of stumped, they can call us and we’ll take care of everything - gift wrapping, shipping and even writing the card.”

Holiday Pet Tips To Protect Our Furry Friends ur pets are part of the family. As such, they are a huge part of most holiday celebrations. However, the holidays also pose danger to pets, so owners should carefully follow the follow suggestions from the Nassau County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. 1) Don’t buy tinsel-especially if you have cats. Cats love to play with linear objects like string, yarn, rubber bands, and worst of all, tinsel. What often happens is that they will be playing and it will get caught and anchored under their tongue while they swallow the other end of it. Since it’s stuck at one end, and the digestive tract is trying to move it in the opposite direction, it gets bound up in the intestines, can shred them, and potentially cause death if not dealt with right away. 2) Put away all toxic foods. All types of chocolate are toxic, but dark chocolate is the worst. Other foods than can be toxic are onions, raw potatoes, raisins and grapes. Some plants and flowers can be very dangerous to dogs and especially cats, so be careful of holiday plants, such as poinsettas and mistletoe. 3) Make sure that guests visiting your home are careful not to let your pet escape out the front door as they go in and out - especially if you have a runner. A helpful suggestion is to put a gentle reminder on the back of the door so they are always conscious of this. Perhaps, have printed a picture of your little friend with a “Don’t let me escape! caption. 4) Be sure that all pets have proper

identification. A microchip that is ISO certified is best so that your furry family can be found and the chip read with a universal reader no matter what brand you picked. In addition, you should always have a sturdy tag on their collar with your phone number. 5) Keep your pet on a leash. This time of the year people are stressed and not paying attention to where they are going. The safest way to guarantee that nobody gets hit by a car is to make sure that they are not loose anywhere near the road. 6) Pet-proof better than you would for young children. If this is too difficult with company visiting, then confine your cat or dog to a safe place, like a crate, when you go out. 7) Be aware of the cold. Remember not to leave your furry friends out there for too long - especially at night or during colder temperatures. Just because they have fur, it doesn’t mean that they can withstand subzero temperatures. 8) Don’t feed your pet novelty treats that they are not used to just because it’s a special occasion, especially pig’s ears and nondigestible rawhide. A trip to the vet for an upset stomach is not a fun way to spend the holidays. 9) Avoid leaving your pet unsupervised with their new holiday toys. Never leave them alone with a toy. Nobody really knows why, but eating it might seem like a good idea at the time for your pet. 10) Unplug cords and cables that they might chew on or trip over when you’re not around - especially the ones that are attached to your tree.

All Aboard! Electric Model Trains Connect Generations Electric trains are a holiday tradition

By Ronald Scaglia rscaglia@antonnews.com olks have many cherished and varied memories of the holiday season. Reindeer on the lawn, hot chocolate by the fireplace and the sweet aroma of pies baking in the oven are all common holiday recollections that many people share. Another one is the sight of a model train circling around a Christmas tree. “Christmas is synonymous with electric trains,” says John Specce, president of the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum. “Everyone remembers the train under the tree,” concurs William Finkel, director of business affairs for Lionel trains. Many adults who played with model trains as children continue to enjoy them as adults. Steve Ford, owner of Willis Hobbies in Mineola, says that adults come into his store and the trains help bring them back to when they were a child. “Especially this time of year when they come in and see all the train sets on display, it helps them to relive their youth,” he says. “They say ‘I remember the first train set that my father bought me.’ Now they’re buying it for their son.” Specce says that model trains have quite a following on Long Island. He has a model train set himself, and in his operation of the museum he has encountered many serious hobbyists. “What happens is when you set up an electric layout, you can build your own empire,” says Specce of train hobbyists who create scenes for their trains to travel through. “You’re the king of that empire. You’re in control and your imagination is the only thing that limits you.” While adults may build an empire, children also get the same opportunity. For those who are looking for a gift for their children and grandchildren, which will foster their imagination and allow them to use their creativity, unlike other toys in which the result or the goal is predetermined, an electric model train might be the answer. There’s also the added aspect of children using their

hands to create something. Some may find that to be more beneficial for children than to be navigating an animated figure on a screen. “What a model does, is it lets children follow directions and work with their hands,” Ford remarked. “You’re actually creating this model. In some cases you’re using your imagination. It’s a great learning experience for kids.” With all of the hi-tech toys such as video game systems that are available today, it’s easy to assume that young people would not find electric model trains as fascinating as their parents did. However, Ford says that popular shows and movies have fostered an interest in trains among children. He says that

The model train on the upper shelf is a replica of the Polar Express from the popular movie and children’s book.

Thomas the Tank Engine thrills many young kids, and this has created a fascination with trains. Ironically, as he was speaking, a young girl was pushing a Thomas model train through train tracks that are on display in Willis Hobbies. The Polar Express is a popular children’s book, which was also turned into an animated movie starring Tom Hanks in 2004. The story centers on a boy whose faith in Santa Claus is being tested. A magical train takes him to the North Pole where he meets Santa and he believes once more. With this story, the link between Christmas and trains is reestablished, and a new generation has a holiday memory that can be connected to railroads.

Some children are also likely to be fascinated by trains because of the connections that are made with their parents. Unlike other toys, both parents and their children can enjoy the magic of operating a model train. In addition, the activity of actually operating a train is something that can fascinate kids, even those who are used to the bright lights of a computer. However, to further capture their interest, the makers of model trains have enhanced them with modern technology to make them more appealing to kids from the electronic age with sounds and animation “With the digital aspect, kids are all looking at computers and keyboards,” says Ford. “A lot of companies are bringing trains into that era. There’s an increase in the animation. You’re not just watching a train go around - you are interacting.” Ford says that the eyes of children open wide and their jaws drop open when they actually guide a train through its path. And so many years after they first operated an electric model train, adults often have the same reaction. And unlike trains of years past, some of today’s models come with remote controls, so the “engineers” are not just flipping a switch and watching a train go, but are actually steering and guiding it. For kids who have an attachment to other modes of transportation, Willis Hobbies also sells models cars and airplanes. Ford says that some children like to build a model car that their parents own, or if a grandparent was in the military, build a helicopter that was flown by that grandparent. However, even though a lot of time has passed since passenger trains became popular, and there are other forms of transportation, children still have a fascination with trains. “There’s still a large contingent of fans,” says Finkel. “Watch any kid getting on the LIRR and you can see that it’s still magic.” Willis Hobbies is located at 300 Willis Avenue in Mineola. The phone number is (516) 746-3944 and the website is www.willishobbies.com. The Oyster Bay Railroad Museum is located at 102 Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay. The phone number is (516) 558-7036 and the website is www.obrm.org.

Gifts That Truly Share The Spirit Of Giving hen the commotion of the holidays sets in, it’s easy to forget the true meaning of the season. Giving back and helping others is what makes this time of year so special. As you rush from store to store, buying gifts for your loved ones, you might wonder how you can make a difference. Some simple steps can have a big impact, and it’s as easy as giving gifts that benefit more than just the recipient.

3. Green gifts that give back If you or those on your gift list are eco-minded, consider a gift with an environmental theme. A simple yet meaningful gift is to plant a tree in honor of someone. Care for the tree and watch it grow year after year as the holiday season approaches. 4. Give yourself a present by helping Sandy recovery efforts Many are still struggling to recover from the devastation caused by the superstorm. To help others, and the community, consider a donation to one of these charities. Perhaps this is what you give yourself this year. Instead of purchasing the latest electronic device, that you really don’t need, give something to help those who were devastated by the storm. If will likely make you feel better than any other material present you could buy yourself. From an ornament that helps sick children get better to planting a tree that grows bigger each year, gifts with meaning will be remembered well beyond the end of December and are a win-win - your recipient feels great about receiving a meaningful present and you feel good about putting your shopping dollars toward something with positive influence. Saint Nick is sure to approve. (BPT)

2. Donate in someone’s name Many people make donations to nonprofits during the holiday season, but this generosity can also turn into a great gift idea. Whether you’re shopping for someone and it seems impossible to find the right gift, or the person seems to have it all, a charitable donation made in the recipient’s name is sure to bring a smile during the holidays. If you know the person’s favorite charity, visit its website and decide on the amount you want to donate. Most charities allow you to print a certificate or card with the person’s name and a personal message about the donation, so you can put a gift under the tree. If you don’t know the person’s favorite charity, think of his or her interests and conduct an Internet search. Pet lover? Search for nonprofit pet organizations in the recipient’s area. Military vet? Look for charitable organizations for military families and soldiers.

A St. Jude’s bear ornament looks fabulous on a tree and it helps an organization that takes care of sick children.

1. Gifts that give more When trying to find a unique gift for that special someone, keep an eye out for items that help a cause or make a difference in other’s lives. For example, head to Kmart for an exclusive St. Jude bear ornament, which serves as a cute remembrance of the 2012 holiday season. The best part is this gift gives back because for each ornament sold, Kmart will donate $1, with a minimum donation of $50,000, to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital where children sick with cancer or other life-threatening illnesses can be treated at no cost to their families. It’s a gift that helps save lives, and one both you and the recipient will feel good about displaying on the tree year after year. Many other local organizations in need of your support will be selling stuffed animals, ornaments, and other related items. Consider one of these as a gift that is unique and special.

HOLIDAY GUIDE - ANTON COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS - DECEMBER 21, 2012

Tips From Mrs. Claus For Making The Season Bright hen trying to make the holidays brighter, who better to ask for advice than Santa’s wife? If you think you’re busy this time of year, imagine how busy the first lady of holiday cheer can be. Not only does she help the big guy get ready for Christmas, but she makes sure everyone in the North Pole has a memorable holiday season. From hosting parties to keeping the elves happy and healthy, this joyful time of year is also her busiest. “While the holiday season is always a hectic time at the North Pole, just like it is for you and your family, we still try to spend time together even after a long day in Santa’s workshop” says Mrs. Claus. “We read Santa’s letters, play reindeer games and bake tasty holiday

goodies together.” For a holiday season filled with joy and laughter, Mrs. Claus shared her top ways to make lasting memories with your little ones.* Letters to Santa: Santa loves receiving letters from children. Encouraging your kids to write to Santa provides a great opportunity to teach them how to spell, compose written text and allows them to practice handwriting. For younger kids who haven’t started reading or writing, encourage them to draw pictures instead. * Leave something special: Making a snack for Santa with your little helpers offers an extra opportunity to spend time together creating memories that will last a lifetime. Think beyond the cookie tray and personalize your treats just for him. * Holiday cheer: Make decorating the house a fun event for the whole family. Engage your kids in holiday crafts to display on the mantle and make sure everyone has ornaments to hang on the tree. * Story nights: Santa and I often gather all of the elves together to reminisce about family memories, or watch our favorite holiday movies. Stir up some hot cocoa and treats, share special moments from holidays past, or let your little ones pick their favorite holiday Making cookies or other treats for Santa is another fun activity that will create lasting memories. movie. Christmas Tree Fire Safety Tips

hristmas trees are a popular holiday tradition. Unfortunately, if proper precautions are not taken, they can also be dangerous. Christmas tree fires account for approximately 250 house fires each year in the United States, and of those, one-third are caused by electrical problems. A heat source too close to the tree causes one in every five of these fires. It can take only a few seconds for fire to fully engulf a room if a Christmas tree comes in contact with an ignition source, such as a frayed wire or candle. To ensure holiday safety, County Executive Mangano offers the following safety tips: • Choose a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched. • Before placing the tree in the stand, cut 1-2” from the base of the trunk. • Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source, such as fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents, or lights. • Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit. • Use lights that have the label of an independent testing laboratory. Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use. • Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Connect no more than three strands of mini string sets and a maximum of 50 bulbs for screw-in bulbs. Read manufacturer’s instructions for the number of LED strands to connect. • Never use lit candles to decorate the tree.

his year, it is expected that even more shoppers will turn to the Internet to do a least a portion of their holiday shopping. Before making any purchases online, consider these safety tips from Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano and Police Commissioner Thomas Dale to help protect shoppers from identity theft, scams and unhappy transactions Trust your instincts. If you don’t feel comfortable buying or bidding on an item over the web, or if you feel pressured to place your order immediately, maybe you shouldn’t. Be knowledgeable about webbased auctions. Take special care to familiarize yourself not only with the rules and policies of the auction site itself but with the legal terms (warranties, refund policy, etc.) of the seller’s items that you wish to bid on. Double check pricing. Whether the product is being sold as new or used, be suspicious of prices that are too good to be true. Also consider carefully whether you may be paying too much for an item, particularly if you’re bidding through an auction site. You may want to comparison shop, online or offline, before you buy. Find and read the privacy policy. Read the privacy policy carefully to find out what information the seller is gathering from you, how the information will be used, and how you can stop the process. If a site does not have a privacy policy posted, you may not want to do business with that site. If it does have a privacy policy, there will probably be a link to it from the seller’s home page, or it could be included with the legal terms. Review the return, refund, and shipping and handling policies as well as the other legal terms. If you can’t find them, ask the seller through an e-mail or telephone call to indicate where they are on the site or to provide

According to Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano, about 250 house fires each year involve Christmas trees.

• Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed. • After Christmas, dispose of the tree immediately after Christmas or when it is dry. Dried-out trees are a fire hazard and should not be left in the home or garage, or placed outside against the home. Check with your local community to find a recycling program.

them to you in writing. Often, return shipping charges may be more expensive than the item itself. Some retailers may only return for store credit or charge restocking fees. It is important to know these details prior to placing an order. Check that the Internet connections are secure. Before you give your payment information, there are various icons and software programs that indicate that security software is in place. Use the safest way to pay on the Internet. Pay for your order using a credit card. There are new payment options for users wary of putting their credit-card information on the Web. Some credit card companies offer temporary account numbers for their cardholders. These services will generate a random number that you can paste into a merchant’s payment form. This limits exposing useful financial information to thieves and hackers. The merchant can’t tell that you’re using a temporary number, and the charge appears on your credit card statement as a normal purchase. You can request a new number every time you shop or use the temporary number for multiple purchases, though each number can be used with only one merchant. Print the terms. You should print out and date a copy of terms, conditions, warranties, item description, company information, even confirming emails, and save them with your records of your purchase. Insure the safe delivery of your item. If you’re concerned about the safety of your package if there’s no one home to receive it, ask whether you can specify that the shipper must receive a signature before leaving the package. Or, it may be safer to have the package delivered to your office. Inspect your purchase. Look at your purchase carefully as soon as you receive it. Contact the seller as soon as possible if you discover a problem with it. Tell the seller in writing about any problem that you are concerned with, ask for a repair or refund, and keep a copy of your correspondence.
