The Port Washington Chamber of Commerce will be presenting the 23rd annual HarborFest Dock Day and Craft Festival on Sunday, June 2. Admission is free and all events officially begin at 10 a.m. at the Town Dock, Baxter Pond and lower Main Street. A juried Craft Show will feature approximately 90 quality craftspeople. The booths will be located along lower Main Street, near the Town Dock. Another attraction along Main Street is “Art In The Park” organized by The Art Guild. It features local artists displaying their work in Sunset Park, along the Manhasset Bay waterfront. They will also have a free Plein Air Workshop for adults at 1:30 p.m. and a Clay Workshop for children at 12 p.m. Button Making will be offered throughout the day. As soon as you enter the dock, look for the Chamber of Commerce booth and the Town of North Hempstead booth near the entrance. Both locations will be giving out free reusable shopping bags for all your HarborFest purchases. The Chamber’s bags are sponsored by the Port Washington Water Taxi, and additional bags have been donated by King Kullen and Stop & Shop. Everyone is excited that the 80’ schooner SoundWaters will return to Manhasset Bay for HarborFest. On Saturday, June 1, the SoundWaters will depart the Town Dock for a Sunset Sail from 6 to 8 p.m. During HarborFest Dock Day, on Sunday, June 2, SoundWaters sails will be at 12 p.m., 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Reservations for all sails may be made online at harborfestcruises.eventbrite.com. The cost for the Sunset Sail is $35 per person, all ages. The cost for the Sunday Dock Day sails is $25 for adults and $15 for children ages 5 to 12. Please note that children under 5 should not participate in the cruises. Founded in 1989, SoundWaters’ mission is to educate children and adults about the wonders and beauty of Long Island Sound and its watershed.

To encourage people to see up close how beautiful our Bay truly is, Port Washington’s Water Taxi, the Charles II, will also be available to take people on cruises throughout HarborFest. And Atlantic Outfitters will offer kayaking for the more adventurous to get out on the Bay. A highly anticipated event is the debut of the Port Washington Fire Department’s new fireboat. It will be moored at the Town dock for the festival and will offer tours and demonstrations that are sure to be an exciting addition. Many lucky festival goers can catch a free ride on the picturesque North Fork Trolley, sponsored by the Greater Port Washington Business Improvement District (The BID.) The trolley will make a continuous loop from the train station to the dock area. Registration for the HarborFest Model Boat Regatta at Baxter Pond begins at 9:30 a.m. for Sousa and Daly, at 9:45 a.m. for Guggenheim and Salem and 10 a.m. for Manorhaven and St. Peter’s. Third graders from all elementary schools were taught by Chamber volunteers how to make catamaran-style boats from recycled materials. Arlene Kase and Marian Weissman organized the classroom sessions, Bill Brakman and Mary Lu Dempsey put the boat kits together and Bill Palafox will organize the races. The Regatta will take place at Baxter Pond from 10:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Regatta’s t-shirt sponsor is the Port Washington Public Library Foundation — Tepper Intergenerational Program. Benefactors are the Nautical Advisory Committee of the Port Washington Public Library and the Manhasset Bay Sailing Foundation. Major sponsors are the Manhasset Bay Yacht Club, North Shore Yacht Club, Port Sailing Center and the Port Washington Yacht Club. Additional financial support is received from many Chamber of Commerce members.

The Treasure Hunt is made possible by the sponsorship of Port Pediatrics and Valley National Bank. On the Town Dock, there will be dozens of local merchants and organizations offering fine shopping and browsing, demonstrations,

activities, give-aways, services and information. As always, a main attraction will be HarborFest’s fabulous Food Court. Third Graders Build Sailboats for HarborFest Regatta Don’t miss this year’s 17th annual HarborFest Model Sailboat Regatta for Third Graders on Sunday, June 2 at Baxter Pond in Port Washington! Race Day Registration times at Baxter Pond for participants are as follows: • Sousa & Daly 9:30 a.m. • Guggenheim & Salem 9:45 a.m. • Manorhaven & St. Peter’s 10:00 a.m. The first elimination heat will take place at 10:15 a.m., with the final heat slated for 11:30 a.m. The awards ceremony takes place shortly thereafter. The Regatta is an exciting part of the HarborFest 2013 celebration where third graders make and sail their own pontoon-style boats made with recycled materials. All third graders who register on race day morning will have a chance to win. The Regatta school instruction chair people are Arlene Kase and Marian Weissman. They, along with many capable volunteer instructors, will have met with over 400 third graders at all of Port’s elementary schools to show them how to make

their boats. Empty milk or juice cartons are transformed into pontoons. Paper sails and plastic bags are turned into sails. Wooden dowels serve as masts and booms, and slats of wood act as keels to keep the boats sailing upright and straight.

Bill Palafox is the chairman of the race day committee. On June 2, the children will compete against other “skippers” from their schools, with the winners of these rounds racing against other schools. Awards will be given for overall race winners,

as well as the Team Spirit Award to the school with the highest rate of participation in the Regatta. The first 200 children to register for the event will receive T-shirts, compliments of the Tepper Intergenerational Program of the Port Washington Public Library Foundation. Benefactors for the event are the Nautical Advisory Council of the Port Washington Public Library and the Manhasset Bay Sailing Foundation. Major sponsors are the Manhasset Bay Yacht Club, North Shore Yacht Club, Port Sailing Center and the Port Washington Yacht Club. Additional financial support is received from many Chamber of Commerce members. The Regatta was created to fire kids’ imaginations and give them the challenge of creating something themselves, seeing their creation in action, all while learning the principles of buoyancy and sailing. It is also a great way for them to begin to develop a lifelong appreciation for the water, as well as helping them develop team spirit. Best of luck to all of the racers!

“On the Waterfront: 12 Great Reasons to Love Port” BY DEBBIE GRECO COHEN Whether from the shoreline or while on a boat, residents of and visitors to Port Washington appreciate the spectacular beauty of Manhasset Bay, Hempstead Harbor and the Long Island Sound. Some take advantage of various water sports and other activities in and along these beautiful bodies of water, while others are content to walk along its shoreline. Yet few have been lucky enough to fly over our lovely community and view it from above. As beautiful as Port and its surrounding waters are from ground or sea level, it is nothing as compared to seeing it from the air. John Meehan, photographer with the Town of North Hempstead, has one of the best jobs going. Sure, he photographs meetings and other common Town events, but he also gets to fly in helicopters for a bird’s-eye view of our community. John has captured breathtaking aerial images from various points of Port Washington and beyond, as well as events that celebrate all that Manhasset Bay has to offer.

Photo courtesy of John Meehan, Town of North Hempstead

Love Port” photo exhibit. Sponsored by Sandata Technologies and The Training Station Athletic Club, the exhibit will be unveiled on June 2 as part of the 23rd annual HarborFest celebration.

Be sure to visit the exhibit while at HarborFest or afterwards. The exhibit will be on display until next year’s celebration and is always “open” since the photos are viewed through the museum’s portholes and rear windows.
