Collecting Fine Art Photographs Michelle Lamunière

If you’re a beginner collector or a seasoned one looking to explore a new art form, photographs are an excellent option. Because it is a reproductive medium like printmaking, photography offers an extraordinary variety of imagery, often at a more reasonable price point than paintings and sculpture. Whether you’re seeking to build a significant collection or simply to acquire some interesting works for your walls, you first need to figure out what kind of photographs you like. The best way to do this is to see as much work as possible. Spend time reviewing publications and online sources about photography. Some of my favorites include: Photograph magazine, which lists current gallery and museum exhibitions; The Photograph Collector, an overview of auction previews and results; www.collectordaily.com, which offers photography criticism from a collector’s perspective; and www. iphotocentral.com, which provides a wealth of information on topics ranging from connoisseurship to conservation. A great way to see a variety of work in one place is to attend a fair like those organized by the Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD) in New York, Classic Photographs Los Angeles and photo la, or Paris Photo. Just remember that art fair booths are curated affairs, often focusing on one artist or a specific theme, and reflect a narrow selection of a much larger inventory. Visit galleries and spend time talking to dealers, who are happy to share their knowledge and enthusiasm. Join collector’s circles and friends of photography groups. In addition to meeting likeminded collectors and supporting the institutions’ activities, these groups provide access to artist talks and a wealth of curatorial knowledge that can expose you to a wide range of photographic practice. Auction houses also have specialists on hand during previews who can talk with you about the works on offer. Once you’ve identified an artist, movement or genre that intrigues you, do your research. Familiarize yourself with a photographer’s body of work in order to understand the breadth of their practice and their place within the history of the medium. Are you interested in a particular series or a single iconic image like Alfred Stieglitz’s The Steerage (fig.

Similarly, if you’re looking at an artistic movement such as Pictorialism or an approach like photojournalism, what are the aesthetic and stylistic qualities that attract you? Is there material available in your area of interest? For emerging and contemporary photographs, seek out work that is conceptually sound as well as visually successful, such as Lalla Essaydi’s Converging Territories series (fig. 2). Above all, don’t be seduced by what’s hot in the art market since the longevity of the latest collecting frenzy or “it” artist is never guaranteed. As with other art or collectibles, learning how to evaluate the physical properties of a photographic object is also crucial to successful collecting. Factors to assess include print quality and condition, print date, process, edition size, dimensions and inscriptions. Look for photographs that exhibit tonal range, luminosity, and unmarred surfaces (even a subtle mark visible only in raking light matters). If prints aren’t properly washed or fixed, chemical inconsistencies over time can produce fading and changes in tone. For example, the normal color for albumen silver prints (produced between 1850 and c. 1900) is a rich purplish brown, but over time through light exposure and chemical reactions, they often become yellowish brown (fig. 3). Silver-based images tend to be more stable than dye-based color prints made between the 1950s and 1990s, which are particularly susceptible to fading and color deterioration. Environmental conditions like excess humidity and temperature changes can produce fading, mold, and foxing (visible in fig. 3). Additional considerations are acidic mounts and adhesives, and crimps, creases, scratches, and tears from handling. As with works in other media, glowing

smudges or spots observed under black light may indicate areas of restoration. Conservation is not in and of itself a bad thing, but learn to distinguish between minor repairs and surface cleanings and significant treatment that can diminish the value of the object. Another important consideration is print date. A vintage print refers to one made within a few years after the negative was taken. In general, fewer prints were made prior to the development of the fine art photography market in the 1970s so vintage works are usually rarer and therefore typically considered more valuable. If a vintage print is not available or is outside your price range, later prints are good options. While a vintage print is thought to be truer to the photographer’s original intentions, later prints can reflect the evolution of an artist’s aesthetic as in the case of British photographer Bill Brandt who in the early 1950s developed a printing style that was strikingly high in contrast (fig. 4). Later prints can also be made by someone working under the guidance of a photographer or posthumously with the authority of the artist’s estate. Many Edward Weston prints on the market were made after

his death by his son Cole, a successful photographer in his own right, but depending on the image, you can expect to pay ten times as much or more for a vintage print by the master (fig. 5). Another result of the development of the photography market is the practice of creating editions—a photographer agrees to make a finite number of prints from a single negative or digital file that is then typically retired. A single image can be printed in multiple sizes, each with its own edition, so keep this in mind when reviewing a numbered print. Some prints in an edition are never produced because the artist makes them based on demand. Also, as the edition comes closer to selling out, the prints often become more expensive. Similarly, while some early 20th century photographers like Ansel Adams regularly signed their prints, this was the exception rather than the rule. However, even if unsigned, prints can often be attributed based on style, print process, and other characteristics associated with a particular artist. Once you’re ready to buy, know your budget and stick to it. Be openminded, but don’t be swayed—be sure to buy what appeals to your own aesthetic interests since you’re the one who will

and you don’t want to be stuck living with a work of art that leaves you cold. Consider later prints and works by emerging photographers if your acquisition funds are modest. Don’t forget to factor in additional costs such as framing, storage and insurance, and think carefully about where you’re going to put something since most photographs should not be housed in locations that get a lot of sunlight. The monetary value of fine art photographs depends on supply and demand and what the market will bear in terms

of price. A good way to get a sense for what a photograph is worth is to look at previous auction results. When doing so, bear in mind there are different markets—an auction price represents the secondary market. You can expect to pay more on the primary, or retail, market, i.e., at galleries and art fairs. Auctions offer quality works as well as the occasional deal, but be sure to familiarize yourself with the conditions of sale and factor in buyer’s premium, shipping and sales tax, if applicable. It is wise to inspect the work in person (or send a representative to do so) to ensure that you’re comfortable with the condition. If you’re buying photographs online, remember that the works on many of these sites are not necessarily vetted by experts. If you see two prints of the same image with wildly different prices, be suspicious. If you’ve done your research, you’ll probably be able to determine the reason for the discrepancy. As with anything of monetary value, there will be forgeries. Thanks to the burgeoning field of conservation science, we now have tools that can assist in the uncovering of fakes in photography. forgery scandals involve the work of the Surrealist artist Man Ray and the social documentarian Lewis Hine (fig. 6). Comparisons of manufacturer logos, paper fiber analysis, and the detection of optical brightening agents used in the manufacturing of photographic papers after 1955 confirmed doubts about the authenticity of the works. More recently, there have been reports of fake Helmut Newton photographs flooding the market. While the work of Newton, a fashion photographer who died in 2004, has always been susceptible to forgery, the problem has been exacerbated by the growth of online selling platforms where objects are easy to pass off to unsuspecting buyers. In Newton’s case, many of the fakes are made by scanning or re-photographing

high quality reproductions leading to cropped compositions and black-andwhite versions of color images. Other clues to fake Newtons are digital prints and signatures in pen on the front of the work. The lesson to be learned? Always do your homework. Make sure you educate yourself about the photographs in which you’re interested. See as much work as you can and talk to people who are willing to share their knowledge. Know the seller and his or her reputation. Up for auction is a Gillette gold-plate, brass-comb, five-piece safety razor set. It includes the razor, two blade containers, one tall container and a shaving brush; comes in the brown, original leather case. This very lightly used 5-piece safety razor set is in very good, clean condition. There are inscriptions on every piece of the set. Under the razor is the name “Gillette” in a lozenge on the left and “Made in USA” on the right. On each piece, it reads “14k” and a number of grams. (Photo: eBay seller chrisguil.) the gold tone one just mentioned was offered for sale at $315. I am trying to understand the $6,100 price paid for this set. Nothing identical could be found in the marketplace. Obviously, at least two people wanted this set very badly.

$730 (37 bids): New York International Time Recorder Clock Factory Punch Clock. This is an Antique International Time Clock made in Endicott, New York. This is the early wheel mechanism type, and it is in good overall working condition, though I am sure it could use a little tinkering to work perfectly. It has the nice oak cabinet with doors on both sides to access the mechanism. Includes extra paper rolls and winding key. It has an electric cord as well. The clock has some rust on the cast iron number wheel, but it actually looks worse in the photos than in person. Measures

DBA: The first time clock was invented by Willard Bundy on November 20, 1888. A year later, his brother Harlow organized the Bundy Manufacturing Company to mass-produce time clocks. In 1900, Bundy Manufacturing sold its time recording business to a new company, International Time Recording Company, which merged in 1911 into the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company, the forerunner of IBM. I have seen this model sell for much more money so I would say the buyer got a good deal.

$1,063 (43) bids: Double Orange Soda Advertising Sign, Rolf Armstrong, Cherie Pin-up Girl. Measuring 17 7/8 inches in diameter, this authentic 1930s die-cut paper sign advertises for “Truly Delightful Double-Orange” soda. This is a very rare sign and was designed by the American painter of pin-up girls, Rolf Armstrong (1889-1960.) The sultry woman in the center of this sign was used in a few other pieces by Rolf Armstrong, and she is named “Cherie,” or “Kiss Me Again.” The condition of this authentic 1930s Rolf Armstrong Double-Orange sign is perfect, with the exception of some removable masking tape on the backside. I’ll leave it to the experts have this tape removed. (Photo: eBay seller wwolst12.) DBA: This is a very wonderful example of advertising from the 1930s. The price is perhaps on the high side for this image. However, it is difficult to evaluate the condition of the object from sales results and not from actually seeing and handling the object. These advertising objects were not treated as works of art at the time of their manufacture. I did find an identical one selling on eBay in January of 2015 for $567.88. There are giclee copies and plain old “Xerox” copies being made of this image so be careful when purchasing that you are getting the original if you are paying significant amounts of money. This is collectible in two categories, not just soda advertising, but the portrayal of “flapper era” women.

Circa 1900 Sioux dress, $7,475, Allard Auctions A circa 1900 Sioux dentalium (tooth shell) and tradecloth dress that was featured on an episode of Antiques Roadshow prior to auction, sold for $7,475 at Big Spring Phoenix, an auction event held March 7-8 by Allard Auctions, Inc. (based in Saint Ignatius, Mont.) in Mesa, Ariz. (outside of Phoenix). Also, a woman's outfit from the Shoshone plateau tribe of Wyoming, made circa 1960s, made $5,463; and a near-room size Navajo Crystal rug (or weaving), circa 1940s or '50s, with geometric design, went for $4,025. Also, a Custerera 1875 Springfield US Officers Model trap-door rifle, made under special order for commissioned officers, hit $13,200; and a Civil War-era Sharps New Model 1859 rifle, the type issued in 1862 to Hiram Berdan's 1st and 2nd Regiment of the U.S. Sharpshooters, fetched $10,800. $115,000 for a Titanic Deck Chair A wooden chaise lounge-style deck chair pulled from the Atlantic after the sinking of the Titanic sold for $115,000. The chair was recovered by the crew of the cable repair ship Mackay-Bennett; it was contracted by the White Star Line to recover bodies and embalm them, which was required by law before dead bodies could be brought into port. The crew retrieved 306 of the 328 bodies that were found of the 1,517 people who died in the disaster. John Jacob Astor and Isidor Straus, owner of Macey’s Department Store, were among those found. The ship did not have enough embalming supplies for the operation so 116 bodies of passenger traveling in third class were buried at sea. The chair was originally given to a crewmember of the Mackay-Bennett.

Name This Famous Antique by Mike McLeod

This is the Mica Hand created by the Hopewell Culture people, and it was found in Ross County, Ohio, at one of their mound-building sites. It measures 11 inches long by 7 inches wide and was carved out of mica, a silicate with hexagonal crystals that readily cuts into sheets. The mica used for carving the Hand has been traced to mica deposits in North Carolina. The Hopewell Culture was not one homogenous group of people but rather at least 22 groups of people related by trade and interaction. The locations of these groups have been mapped out as the “Hopewell Interaction Sphere”; they inhabited parts of more than 20 states in the central and mid-western U.S. (including the eastern parts of Missouri, Iowa, Oklahoma and down to Texas), the southern states and along the Gulf Coast and northern Florida, and parts of the northeastern states and southern Canada. That covers a lot of ground even in our day, let alone by foot in those days, which was from about 200 B.C. to 500 A.D.

Archaeologists have discovered no written records left by them so the Hopewell Culture was so-named for the owners of the farm where their mounds were excavated in Ross County, Ohio. Many Hopewell Culture groups built mounds and earthworks, some with astronomical relationships. Archaeologists have not definitely confirmed the purposes of the mounds, but some writers have called them “cathedrals” or other such edifices because of their great magnitude in size and for the artifacts found in or near them—some of which are postulated to have been religious offerings. seashells, obsidian arrow points (traced to Yellowstone in Montana), pots with incised designs, carved pipes, mica carvings of animals, and the Mica Hand are just a few of the Hopewell artifacts. The great distances traveled to bring these items to the earthwork structures for more than just trade suggests pilgrimages. The sheer size of the earthwork structures and the effort required to construct them also lends to the belief that they were built for religious or ceremonial purposes. The Newark Hopewell earthwork structures in Ohio are huge, situated on 4.5 square miles of land. The structures include a circle 1,200 feet in diameter, another large circle, a hexagon, a square, a semi-circle, and long parallel lines of earthwork walls leading from one shaped structure to another.1 The Newark earthworks are the largest in the world, and they were all painstakingly constructed using rudimentary tools to fill baskets with dirt. About 500 A.D., the Hopewell Cultures quit building mounds, their trading and pilgrimage networks broke down, and their artwork ceased. The period following is known as the Late Woodland Period when larger villages with fortified walls replaced smaller villages. This suggests war may have been a cause for the loss of or change in the Hopewell Cultures. Name This Famous Person by Mike McLeod

Mary Mallon is known far and wide by a name she probably despised and would not accept responsibility for—Typhoid Mary. Born in Ireland on Sept. 23, 1869, she emigrated to the U.S. as a teenager. Unfortunately, she eventually found employment as a cook. The typhoid bacterium Salmonella typhi—which

Mary carried—is spread by poor sanitation and poor hygiene—both of which Mary practiced. She did not believe a healthy person like herself should have to wash her hands. Consequently, illness followed her wherever she worked as a cook. Often, a family became sick a few weeks after she began cooking for them, causing her to find employment with another family. Mary Mallon was not the most deadly carrier of typhoid. Three people died and more than 50 became ill at her hands—at least as far as is known. (Mary often dropped out of sight after leaving a sick family.) Other known carriers of the disease, all men, were responsible for more. Two men caused the deaths of seven people and the infection of more than 130. At the late 1800s, it was only hypothesized that a healthy person could carry a disease and not develop it. Through the work of George Soper, this was eventually confirmed. Soper was hired by the owner of a resort that had experienced several

cases of typhoid. Soper believed the cook was the cause, but she had left abruptly after the outbreak. With no known family, the researcher did not know where to find the cook, until he heard about the daughter of a wealthy family dying of typhoid. There he found Mary Mallon cooking again. He requested urine and fecal samples from her to see if she was a carrier, but Mary went ballistic and refused. Soper visited her again with a colleague, but she threatened him with bodily harm. The New York Health Department then stepped in and sent Dr. Sara Josephine Baker with police to get samples and/or arrest Mary. It required her being thrown in prison to get them, and they showed Mary was a carrier. The city placed her in isolation from society in a clinic and administered various treatments to cure her, but they proved fruitless. She continued to test positive for typhoid. After three years, Mary appealed her incarceration and was released with the stipulation that she never work as a cook again. She agreed, was released, but did not comply.

An outbreak of typhoid at a hospital led authorities there and to Mary. This time, she spent the rest of her life, more than three decades, at the same clinic as before. She was allowed to work there, but never to cook. The newspapers of the day gave her the infamous name of “Typhoid Mary.” Mary Mallon died on Nov. 11, 1938, never admitting that she was a carrier of typhoid.1 Mary Mallon was correctly identified by Ted Carlton of Utah, and Sherron Lawson of Roswell, Ga. Sherron also correctly identified Charles Schulz in the March issue but was not credited. My apologies. ---------------1

Civil War Collector The

Hello, as I was going through some things in my grandfather’s storage, I came upon a travel trunk. Inside, it contained around 40 documents and more than 100 handwritten letters, all from the Civil War. They are in excellent condition. I found some of it very interesting: records, a daily log of the signal officer’s report, and a letter from years later recounting a battle and capture, just to mention a few. I also came across this belt buckle and this unknown item. Apparently, my grandfather was related to this man, Capt. James M. McClintock, who was a signal officer with the Union Army and served under Grant and Sherman. I’m hoping you can help me in finding out if there is any value to the collection. I have attached a few pics to give you an idea of what I’m talking about; however, it’s only a fraction of what I have. I am having trouble finding someone in San Diego to look at them. JS: Your documents are from a notable Civil War officer, James M. McClintock, who was a member of the elite U.S. Signal Corp. A brief biography about him taken from the

Early in Jan. 1862, he was detailed by the War Department to the U.S. Signal Corps. taking up a homestead. James M. McClintock died in 1921 in Seattle.” There are other official documents of Captain McClintock at the Library of Congress. Your documents tell a bit of his personal wartime and postwar story. There is a rare wartime map showing the Confederate positions at Arkansas Post and Union approaches on the Arkansas River—that is the most valuable piece here. The overwhelming defeat of 550 Confederate defenders against more than 30,000 Union soldiers and sailors set the stage for the Vicksburg Campaign. The long postwar letter from a member of the 6th Texas Cavalry defending Arkansas Post telling of Confederate valor at the post is very good and a great complement to the map. You sent copies of about a dozen pieces, and they all appear in excellent condition. If the other 50 documents and letters are in same genre, your group would be a good candidate for auction as an archive. McClintock was a wellwritten officer among the Signal Corp and is even depicted in a painting by renowned Civil War artist Don Troiana, showing signal officers in front of Ft. McAllister, near Savannah, Ga., on a signal platform. Valued as single pieces of paper, the muster-in document Memories Fleaand Antique Mall.05.11_SEA sells for $20-$50, the discharge and enrollment documents with imprinted eagle vignettes sell for around $75-$125 each. Guitars, Cars, Maps—What’s With These Somali Coins? by Mike McLeod Created in England by a private mint, these coins from Somalia can be found in colorful shapes of iconic images and are technically legal tender.1 Gibson guitars, Mustangs, motorcycles and maps of countries are catching the eyes of coin collectors as well as car collectors, motorcycle enthusiasts, guitar heroes, and patriotic citizens. You have to admit, it’s a great marketing scheme. The six-coin set of maps includes Australia, United States, Canada, Russian Federation, Germany, and China, which are also coincidentally home to most of the coin collectors in the world. The silver-plated coins have enamel coatings in the colors of the countries’ flags. The reverse of all the sets shows a denomination of $1 and the Somalia coat of arms. The denomination in dollars is another indicator these coins are just for collectors—Somalia’s currency is the shilling. Exceptional, early stoneware pig bottle with incised decoration, signed “Anna Pottery / 1876,” finely-molded, Albany slip, glazed pig bottle with hole at rear, incised hooves, elegantly incised face, anatomically correct underside. Surface covered with an incised map of the Midwest, including the following landmarks: Miss. River, Grand Tower, Jonesboro, Cairo & St. Louis R.R., Alton, AVA, O. & M. Spanish Armada Cannonball Found A granite cannonball used by a swivel cannon aboard one of the ships of the Spanish Armada was found recently on a beach in northwestern Ireland, reports TheJournal.ie. The cannonball was only about three inches in diameter, but when fired at a gang of sailors on an opposing ship’s deck, it was a fearsome man-killer. Three ships of the Spanish Armada sank during a storm in this area in 1588.

Massive Gilt Lacquer Wood Figure of Vairocana Sold for $379,200 at Julia’s Wall-Apelt Auction James D. Julia Auctioneers was honored to offer the spectacular Dr. Helga Wall-Apelt Asian Collection on March 23. Dr. Wall-Apelt grew up in Germany during WWII. Her father was a prominent physician, and he and his daughter fled the Nazi regime to Switzerland. During that time, he developed a special devotion to the Eastern meditation and Asian arts as a way to deal with the pain and suffering of the war and its effects. After his passing, he bequeathed a group of cherished Asian objects to his daughter. The 15-year old Helga found herself alone with only these Asian mementos from her father. In 1990s, she made a commitment to share her much-beloved collection with the world by creating the Museum of Asian Art in Sarasota in which she placed on loan a number of her personal objects until the museum was dismantled some years later. Dr. Wall-Apelt made the decision to dispose of her vast collection of Asian objects that were stored in Sarasota. The magnificent collection generated interest both here and abroad. The most exciting lot was a massive, larger-thanlife gilt lacquer wood figure of Vairocana (celestial Buddha) estimated at $40,000-$60,000 ultimately ended at $379,200. The sale started off with the Yangtze River Collection of jades, and one of the early lots was a beautiful small doublesided white jade table screen with longevity theme. It carried a presale estimate of $20,000-$30,000 and sold for just under $60,000. A beautiful jade footed marriage bowl with bat decoration estimated at $4,000-$6,000 brought $28,440. A pair of undecorated small white jade bowls estimated at $6,000$8,000 also brought $28,440.

A mottled yellow jade carving of a carp measuring only a few inches in length carried a modest presale estimate of $300-$500. Strong competition projected the final price to a phenomenal $37,920. Julia's upcoming auctions include their rare lamp and glass auction and toy and doll auction in June. Their end of summer antiques, fine art, and Chinese artifacts auction will take place in August.
