It is hard to believe that these beautiful ornaments called “Dresdens” are made of paper, and they have survived this long—being made from 1870 until the end of WWI. Betty Bell is an expert collector in Dresdens, and she has shared her knowledge in this month’s cover story. On the cover is an angel with a conical skirt for use as a tree topper or ornament; it sells for less than $1,000.

Name This Famous Person:

Joseph Merrick

By Mike McLeod

Joseph Merrick is more commonly known by the name he was billed as in human oddities shows: The Elephant Man. While originally it was thought his condition was caused by elephantiasis (swelling caused by fluid collection as the result of roundworms), today it is believed he may have had neurofibromatosis or Proteus syndrome or both. Proteus syndrome is the over growing of bones, organs, skin and so on. Joseph believed his condition was caused when his mother fell Joseph Merrick while trying to get out of the way of a stampeding elephant at a carnival when she was pregnant with him.1 Joseph Merrick’s head was 36 inches in circumference, and his right wrist was 12 inches around.2 The weight of his head required him to sleep sitting with his knees drawn up and his head resting on his knees. While attempting to sleep stretched out on his back, he died at the age of 27 on April 11, 1890—the weight of his head caused a vertebra in his neck to break.

Nickels’ Place aNtiques Antiques: Furniture, Glassware, Jewelry, Hats. Glass Eye Studio: hand blown gifts.

Joseph Merrick was born healthy on August 5, 1862 in Leicester, England. His condition began to develop when he was about five years old, but even so. Even so, he was still able to attend school when of age and later, to get a job rolling cigars. That job ended when his right hand became too big to function. His father then employed him as a hawker and a door-to-door salesman, but this also ended in failure. Joseph could not speak clearly because of a growth in his mouth, and his appearance frightened people. Joseph ran away from home more than once as a teen because of physical abuse there. When he finally succeeded, he found he couldn’t survive on the streets so he ended up in the workhouse. He was there for several years. Hating the workhouse even more than public ridicule, Joseph wrote to a promoter of human oddities who agreed to exhibit him. He did this for a while in England and then in Belgium, but it did not end well when a different promoter took his money.

Since 1976, Jere’s Antiques has catered to, and sold to, a wholesale trade of antiques dealers, designers and auction houses. We maintain our own warehouse in England and buy throughout all of Britain and on the continent, in Belgium, Holland and France. We continue to import a 40-foot container of furniture every 10-12 days. We inventory an incredible range of furniture, in all ages, styles and woods, in our

33,000 square foot warehouse in Savannah.

All of our merchandise is truly priced for the wholesale trade. Whether you seek a period linen press or an Art Deco Vanity, we have it all. Looking for a home or commercial bar? We have it all.

Whether you deal in oak, mahogany, walnut or pine, we have it all.

There are very few importers left and even fewer still who can sell at a true wholesale price. And not many maintain a large inventory of good, clean, saleable merchandise. There are very few that have a large turnover of merchandise. There are very few that unload on a regular basis. There is no one like Jere’s Antiques.

Come see why we set the standard for importers of fine European furniture. www.jeresantiques.com Fax: (912) 236-0274 • Email: jeresantiques@bellsouth.net 8

When the hospital could no longer provide a room for him free of charge, the Chairman of the Royal London Hospital Carr Grom took up his cause and wrote a letter to a newspaper about Joseph’s need. When it was published, sufficient funds were donated for him to live in the hospital for the rest of his life. The notoriety from the newspaper article also brought visitors from time to time, most notably Alexandra the Princess of Wales. (She was married to Queen Victoria’s son Albert Edward who was crowned King-Emperor Edward VII at his mother’s passing in 1901. The Princess of Wales became Queen-Empress Alexandra.) Joseph lived safely in the hospital in his own rooms and enjoyed the company of the doctors and nurses. He was also able to visit the countryside a time or two. He passed away after about four years. A bust made of Joseph Merrick’s head sold for £2,000 at JP Humberts auctioneers in 2015. It had been used as a mold to make a mask for the actor John Hurt who starred as Joseph in the movie. Joseph Merrick’s preserved skeleton was used in the making of the mold.3 In 2014, a Victorian tub-back armchair belonging to Joseph was auctioned by Bonhams for $7,353. It was willed to Edward Charles Taylor who is said to have played his violin for Joseph privately in the Royal London Hospital.4 A 1980 The Elephant Man movie

Name This Famous Antique By Mike McLeod

On September 4, 1622, a Spanish treasure fleet of 28 ships left Havana, Cuba, for Spain. Annually, the fleet carried a wondrous treasure of gold, silver, emeralds, copper, indigo and tobacco. This year’s fleet was six weeks late in its departure due to the late arrival of the treasure and goods from across South America. This spelled the demise of many of the ships because it put them at sea during hurricane season. Two days into the voyage on September 6th, a hurricane struck the fleet in the Florida A gold and emerald cross Straits. Ships were capsized from the Atocha shipwreck. and sank; the Nuestra Señora de Atocha hit a reef and went (Photo courtesy of down 55 feet to the bottom. Guernsey’s) Her mizzenmast was broken off during the storm, but the stump showed above water, marking the spot. The Santa Margarita and Nuestra Señora del Rosario ran aground and were stranded. The Atocha carried 265 people, and all but five died. On the Santa Margarita, 142 perished. At this time, Spain was at outset of the Thirty Years War and it also suffered major losses from Dutch attacks on its shipping. It desperately needed money. To fund the Spanish treasury, the Crown taxed cargo at 20% and laid a second tax which could be up to 40%. Naturally, smuggling was rampant to avoid these taxes, and to combat this, the Spanish government sent a clerk

One of the Atocha’s cannons in the Archivo General de Indias in Seville, Spain. (Photo courtesy of Paul Hermans) on each vessel to create a manifest documenting what was carried on and off the ship. Even so, treasure was often smuggled onboard. Thanks to the manifests, it is known that the Atocha was carrying “…24 tons of silver bullion in 1,038 ingots, 180,000 pesos of silver coins, 582 copper ingots, 125 gold bars and discs, 350 chests of indigo, 525 bales of tobacco, 20 bronze cannon and 1,200 pounds of worked silverware.”1 The documented treasure of the Santa Margarita (not including any smuggled treasure) was 9,000 ounces of gold, 166,574 silver coins, 10,000 pounds of silver and much more. Word of the disaster reached Spain which then began a salvage operation. Diving bells have been used since about the 4th century B.C.2, and the Spanish successfully employed one on the Santa Margarita, recovering about half its treasure. The Atocha was found, but her hatches were battened down too tightly to get inside. When a hurricane struck on October 5, 1622, it scattered the wreck, and the Atocha was completely lost for more than 300 years. In 1969, treasure hunter Mel Fisher began searching for the Atocha around the Florida Keys. The hunt went on for 16

years and required his team to create special equipment to blow sand from the seabed to reveal any treasure in the search pattern. Along the way, they found tantalizing clues that they were on the right trail, including three bars of silver and five bronze cannon. In 1980, some of the Santa Margarita’s treasure was discovered: “…a fortune in gold bars, jewelry and silver coins.”3 Then on July 20, 1985, Fisher’s son Kane found the Atocha and what became known at the Atocha Motherlode. The $450 million treasure included 40+ tons of silver and gold, 100,000+ silver “pieces of eight” coins, 1,000+ silver bars, gold coins, Columbian emeralds, “…a solid gold belt and necklace set with gems; a gold chalice designed to prevent its user from being poisoned; an intricately-tooled gold plate; a gold chain that weighs more than seven pounds; a horde of contraband emeralds—including an impressive 77.76 carat uncut hexagonal crystal experts have traced to the Muzo mine in Colombia; religious and secular jewelry; and silverware.”4 Salvage and conservation efforts were mammoth, but the legal wrangling was gargantuan. Mel Fisher fought the State of Florida and the U.S. Government about ownership of the Atocha. In the end, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the shipwreck was in international waters and the property of Mel Fisher’s company. In 2015, the gold and emerald cross from the Atocha pictured here was sold by Guernsey’s for $118,750. Mel Fisher passed away on December 19, 1998. Some of the Atocha’s treasure may be seen in the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum in Key West, Fla., at 200 Greene Street. ----------1, 3 Melfisher.org, “Nuestra Señora de Atocha, Santa Margarita, Spanish Galleons of 1622.” 2 Arthur J. $1,388 (11 bids, 5 bidders): Antique Kachina Doll, Morning Singer, Hopi polychrome. Very old, 11 inches tall, Morning Singer? Rocks forward a little and won’t stand alone unless the toes are raised a tiny bit. Hand carved from cottonwood root. Not signed. (Photo: eBay seller painterswife2012) DBA: Also called “Hopi katsina figures,” these were made to instruct young girls about the immortal beings that bring rain, control other aspects of the natural world, and act as messengers between human beings and the spirits. That the figure is made of cottonwood is important to being a real one. The look of this kachina is from the Late Traditional period (1910-1930). Clearly someone recognized the age of this doll and valued it. The pricey ones today are a bit “more showy.” Prices for these dolls vary tremendously. $2,600 (32 bids, 14 bidders): Tagged 1930s Steiff Antique Pie-Eyed Mickey Mouse #1416 Miniature 7” Disney. This is an original Mickey Mouse Steiff stuffed 7-inch’ doll with the tags still attached! It comes to you in amazing condition—all 100% original. Mickey is missing his tail but is otherwise as perfect as you will ever find. He was produced from 1931 to 1936 by Steiff. The tag on his ear is perfectly affixed and reads, “Steiff Original geschiitzt 1416 Made in Germany.” The round tag sewn onto his chest reads, “Steiff - Original Mickey Mouse Copyright Walt Disney.” The bottom of

his left foot reads, “Mickey Mouse,” then I can’t make out the rest except “New York.” This rare and hard-to-find Steiff depicts Mickey with four fingers and wearing tan pants with two buttons; both are still firmly affixed. He has both of his original whiskers, and they are also firmly attached. His velvet material is near perfect with no holes, tears or damage of note. Over 80 years old, you will be hard pressed to ever find this Mickey Mouse Steiff in better condition. (Photo: eBay seller fullcircletoys770; Full Circle Toys, Newnan, Ga.) DBA: Top retail value on a similar Mickey would be between $3,500 and $4,500. Condition may be the most important factor in these dolls. While this one has just a few defects, the one that I saw selling for $690 had many more. These dolls were made in several sizes with the largest being 18 inches high and the smallest being 4.5 inches high. $1,525 (28 bids, 11 bidders): Siebe Gorman London Antique Fireman Helmet, c. 1878. Up for bidding is this antique fireman helmet complete with air hose. The hoses originally would be fed with oxygen from footpowered bellows. Overall, this helmet is very rare and in great condition considering its age. Dimensions: front to back is 12 inches excluding hoses. Top to bottom is 13 inches. Weight: 5 pounds. The viewer is not glass and is made from acrylic or something similar. But in overall great shape. (Photo: eBay seller turnaroundrarities) DBA: These are very rare and hard to find. I did find one for sale at $3,600, so I would assume that the buyer got a deal on this one at $1,525. The company has an interesting history. This British company was founded by Augustus Siebe (1788-1872) and advertised itself as “submarine engineers,” mainly worked on diving equipment and breathing equipment. The company made the first diving helmet in 1830. ------------------Deborah Abernethy is a certified appraiser with the International Association of Appraisers. Dresdens: Exquisite Paper Ornaments An Iridescent rooster head candy container

A green iridescent peacock ornament, under $2,000.

By Betty H. Bell Among the most beloved, highly prized decorations used on American Christmas trees are Dresden ornaments, referred to as “Dresdens.” Fascinating, fanciful and colorful, these ornaments were made in and around Dresden, Germany, from 1870 until World War I. Although they were produced in large quantities, few have survived. With the increasing enthusiasm for Christmas decorating and celebration in the last half of the 19th century, Americans began to decorate their homes with fresh greens, fruit and nuts and adorn freshly-cut trees with colorful threads and garlands of popcorn and colored paper chains. By 1850, Christmas was definitely in vogue, encouraged by New Yorkers and magazines, such as Harper’s and Godey’s Lady’s Book. In 1857,

the first decorated tree appeared at the White House, set up by President Franklin Pierce, and this new custom helped to popularize the tree. Toy agents began bringing beautiful ornaments from German manufacturers to America, which were advertised in wholesale and store catalogs as early as the 1860s. Figural cardboard candy boxes and festive, ornate ornaments appealed particularly to the carriage trade in New York and Philadelphia for use as party favors, which could later be used as ornaments at Christmas time. The dozen or more Dresden paper factories busily produced decorations and ornaments to satisfy the increasing demand from affluent Americans. These factories used large embossing

machines which pressed thin cardboard into metal dies, forming and shaping the intricately designed pieces used for each ornament. Each minutely detailed piece of the ornament required stamping between two dies to form the raised and the depressed side of the individual pieces. These pieces were taken home by “cottage workers,” often entire families, where they were meticulously assembled and decorated. Most examples were made from silvered or “Dutch gold” card stock, with others painted realistically. Brightly colored lacquers painted over the gold or silver created an iridescent look, particularly on birds and fish. Most often, pieces were two to three inches wide, but unusually large examples, such as ocean freighters, were made 5.5 and 6 inches long. Silk bags were added to hold small pieces of candy, often in the heads of animals, and other bits of trim and embellishment were added before being offered by the dozen for 25 cents up to $2.20 for a most elaborate example. Among the most expensive were a swan head sleigh with rider driven by two plumed prancing horses and an American locomotive with cowcatcher at the front, pull-out candy box, and cotton steam coming from its smokestack. Dresdens were made in three different dimensions: flat, double and three-dimensional. A flat required a simple image printed on one side only and painted on the undecorated side; it would obviously be the least expensive. These flat ornaments were often collected and placed in Victorian scrap albums. Double Dresdens were made with matching images on both sides, such as a heart or shield, without much depth. These pieces with shallow dimension, usually one-eighth inch to onehalf inch, would require little workmanship and could easily be assembled, only being glued together. Geometric shapes, such

as medallions, leaves or chain links were produced easily and inexpensively. Three-dimensional Dresdens are highly prized by collectors all over the world. Through the fine detailing in creating molds and artistry in finish work, the pieces were almost perfect miniatures of the objects they represented. These reflected curiosity about exotic animals and people in faraway places, only heard about or depicted in prints and publications. The most progressive forms of transportation could be represented authentically, down to the most minute detail. The 1903 Winton touring car ornament boasted authentic tufted upholstery, axle, fenders and the hand brake. A most elaborate Russian Troika boasted tasseled harnesses on each horse as the team pulled a lady or man in a magnificent sleigh. Other ornaments featured: simple farm animals, a prancing circus horse with a performing ballerina holding a garland over her head; a pig with money bags strapped across its back; two men riding a tandem bicycle; and winged cherubs driving a pair of leaping rabbits pulling a seashell sleigh! Many of these examples came in small and large sizes. Basic pieces became much more elaborate with other pieces added. A poodle was made walking, sitting and begging, or even dressed in a tux collar with black top hat, cane and eye glasses. A tree branch could be added as a perch for a painted bunting or an owl, or the owl could have a silk candy bag inserted into his chest. He was sometimes placed on a book beside a feather pen. A horse might be simple and unadorned, but he could have an added saddle, a rider or be attached to a carriage. The most elaborate pieces commanded the highest prices due to the labor involved. Condition is important in determining values. The most elaborate ornaments and the rarest will bring up to $10,000. I have seen ornaments sell for prices in excess of $8,000 several times at Bertoia Auctions. Many three-dimensional animals and fish can be found in good condition for under $400. Transportation items, such as the freighter or the men sculling, are competitively popular. The angel tree topper and the shield candy box would sell for under $1,000. The peacock and the Man in the Sun would sell for less than $2,000, while the ocean freighter and the gecko usually sell for more than $3,000. Early feather trees had wide spaces between the rows of branches to display these prized ornaments. Often, these trees were topped by the conical skirt of a gilded girl with chromolithographed face and torso and having beautiful Dresden wings. Branches below could host all kinds of flying creatures and machines. Bats, butterflies, birds and angels look down in the company of hot air balloons, zeppelins and early airplanes. Many of the transportation pieces often bore one or more riders, increasing the value of the piece. Men were often

Dresdens: Exquisite Paper Ornaments Continued from Center Spread

Ocean freighter, $3,000+.

An Iridescent bat

dressed in suits and hats, having sporty mustaches, accompanied by a lady or a young lad. Ladies often had lovely plumed hats and chenille scarves and were snuggled beneath quilted blankets. Many Dresdens were produced in response to America’s Centennial celebration in 1876. American eagles, Liberty Bells, shields and cannons were produced. Also, sports were represented with golf balls and golf clubs, with or without carrying bags, footballs, basketballs, tennis racquets and polo players on horses. Equestrian themes abound, including ladies riding sidesaddle, and many horses are jumping over obstacles, such as fences and mossy stone walls. An entire orchestra of musical instruments were enjoyed, as well as chalets, churches and quaint houses. Ornaments in the shape of a gladiator’s helmet and a sailor’s hat were popular, as were various boots, slippers and ice skates. Colorful gel-fringed poppers often were inserted into mystical animals and animal head ornaments. Poppers are tubular and covered with gilded paper, containing a surprise, such as a party hat inside. Many candy container Dresdens, originally purchased as party favors, reflected specific holidays and special occasions. Halloween-related pieces included black cats, bats and jack-olantern candy containers. Wedding slippers were quite common. Figures of turkeys can be found, some of which are on a platter ready to be carved. Today, these fragile, lifelike rarities are sought after by collectors hoping to find their first piece or that rare piece, perhaps a one-of-a-kind example. Most

pieces are found through private collections which have become available, as well as through auction houses and antique shows. The annual meeting of The Golden Glow of Christmas Past, an international organization for Christmas collectors, is an excellent venue for meeting other collectors, enjoying educational opportunities, and acquiring items for their Christmas decorating. -------------------------Betty H. Bell has been an antique dealer for 40 years, and she has enjoyed selling holiday items for about 20 years. Her first Dresden purchase, a black and white cow, was made in 1995 and bought for $325. Selling at antique shows and through her website has kept her very busy. Betty can be found at: the Heartland Antique Show held in Novembers; Heart of Tennessee Antique show, February 15-17, 2017; Original Round Top Antiques Fair at the Red Barn, March 27- April 1, 2017; Annual Midwest Vintage Holiday Show, May 28, 2017; and The Golden Glow of Christmas Past Annual Convention, Asheville, NC, August 2-5, 2017. ‘Tis the Season of Scott By Lori Nelson It’s that time of year again. You need presents. Come to the Scott Antique Market; your one-stop shopping destination for holiday gifts, mixed with fun and delicious food. What if you’re not into antiques? That’s like not going to the supermarket because you don’t like cheese! At the Scott Antique Market, there is so much more than antiques. The aisles are filled with goodies galore. If you’ve never been there, you’re in for a treat. If it’s been awhile, come back. See what’s new. I promise you, you’ll find more than presents. Do you need a decorative item? What about something for your beloved pet? Ride the free air-conditioned buses between buildings all day long if you like. Whatever you’ve always wanted is there. You may need more than one day to take it all in, and that’s fine. For a five-dollar entry, you can come back all weekend. Where else could you go for five bucks and see so much and learn

about what you never noticed before, and find all that fun under one roof? (Well, really two roofs, and an adjacent outdoor field filled with extras and architectural gadgets, and it’s all there waiting for you to explore!) Dealers can offer great discounts, and they all enjoy talking about what they collect. Some travel the world to find one-of-a-kind items. Don’t forget to negotiate and ask for a better price when you spot that ideal item. It’s expected, and it’s fun, especially when seller and buyer both win by making a good deal. Are you looking for a toy from your childhood? Old books? What about special linen or carpet, or tool, or that kitchen kitsch from grandma that you broke and want to replace? Do you need new furniture? And then… there’s jewelry! The sparkly jewels are all over the place, and these dealers have what you want. Why would you shop in a mall or a little store when all this is available in one wonderful place? Parking is free. There’s even a little shuttle cart to ride you to the door from your car. It’s safe inside, climate-

controlled, clean, and bright; there’s an electric excitement as you walk through the doors and see all that stuff! After the holidays, come back. New dealers and different merchandise make it a monthly destination. Bring family and friends, spend some time. If you buy something big, porters will help you load it into your vehicle. Enjoy yourself; you deserve it! And remember it’s not all about antiques. It’s about pleasure and passion and pretty things. And presents. It’s always the season at Scott Antique Market – making people happy every month.

Getting to St. Petersburg isn't hard to do. The city's major thoroughfare is I-275, which runs north and south and connects to the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and Manatee County (another mecca for shoppers on the antique trail). I-275 also connects with 1-4 going east to Orlando from Tampa and I-75 heading north. U.S. 19 is an important north-south link that runs the length of the county. A visit to St. Petersburg will leave you wanting more, no matter how long you stay. And it's easy to fan out and explore. Tampa — a city with it's own identity, cultural pulse and antiques and collectibles shops—is right next door. And Orlando, with its many theme parks, is a short drive away. Don't you think it's time to visit, vacation and shop in St. Petersburg? It's truly the Jewel of Florida's Gulf Coast!
