The straw hat she wore in Gone With The Wind sold for $52,500 at Heritage Auctions in 2015. Scarlett’s straw hat (Photo courtesy of Heritage Auctions, HA.com) November 5, 2015: Andy Warhol’s four colorful silkscreen prints of Muhammad Ali sold for $112,500 at Rago Arts & Auction, and a silkscreen print of Grace Kelly made $106,250 at the same sale. November 6, 1946: Berta Hummel, later known as Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel, passed away. Her paintings of children were produced by porcelain manufacturer Franz Goebel as Hummels. Only the very rare bring high prices, such as an early Goebel Hummel Flower Madonna that auctioned for $1,565 on eBay in 2016. Flower Madonna (Photo courtesy of eBay seller gunnerhood) November 7, 2015: John Lennon’s original 1962 J-160E Gibson Acoustic guitar, called the most important Beatles guitar to be auctioned, skyrocketed to $2,410,000 at Julien’s. It was purchased in 1962 and lost in 1963 when left behind at a concert by a road crew member. It turned up in a San Diego guitar shop and changed hands twice before the auction (guitarworld.com, 11/10/15).

November 8, 1847: Author of a dozen novels—including Dracula—Bram Stoker was born in Ireland. An 1897 signed first edition of Dracula sold for $33,460 in 2006. Also that year, a one-sheet Style F movie poster, 27 x 41 inches, from the 1931 movie hit the record books at $310,700, both at Heritage Auctions. Kennedy was elected the 35th President of the United States. His leather bomber jacket with a sewn patch of the Great Seal of the President sold for $655,500 at John McInnis Auction. November 8, 1978: A part of America died this day with the passing of Norman Rockwell. He recorded moments of American life, such as The Gossips, which sold for $8,453,000 at Sotheby’s in 2013. In the painting, 30 people (his actual neighbors) passed gossip that circled back to its source. November 12, 1929: The birthday of Grace Kelly, actress and Princess of Monaco. A Christian Dior gown she wore was auctioned for $72,000 at Julien’s in 2012. A Rear Window onesheet sold for $9,560 in 2013 at Heritage Auctions.

Grace Kelly (Photo courtesy of Heritage Auctions) November 12, 2013: Jeff Koons’ Balloon Dog (Orange), 19942000, sold at Christie’s for $58,405,000—the highest price paid for a work by a living artist (NYT.com, 11/12/13). It was made of mirror-polished stainless steel with transparent color coating, measured 121 x 143 x 45 inches, and produced in blue, magenta, red, and yellow versions.

Collecting Historical Hair

By Mike McLeod

More so in years past, people collected locks of hair as remembrances of loved ones. Photography did not make an appearance until the early-1800s, and it wasn’t until 1901 that George Eastman’s Brownie camera was marketed to the masses so just about everyone could take pictures and preserve family memories. Hair has always been around, and it has served as an enduring emblem that could be woven or preserved in other forms as mourning jewelry. Hair collecting has fallen out of fashion with most people—except for those who collect the strands of historical figures and celebrities. The right amount of hair from the right person can be very valuable. As you would imagine, Elvis’ hair, depending on the quantity, is worth much to certain collectors. In 2002, MastroNet (which was found guilty of shill bidding in 2015) reportedly sold a large amount of Elvis’ tresses for $115,000. In 2010, a jarful of the King’s hair went for $16,730 while one lock made $1,195 in another sale. Both sold at Heritage Auctions. The person who seems to have the most hair in circulation is President Abraham Lincoln. Since 2005, more than two dozen samples of his hair have sold at Heritage. The prices vary from as high as $38,837.50 (for a lock in a locket owned by the daughter-in-law of Lincoln’s Secretary of War) to just over $1,000 for a few strands. Well-documented provenance and a substantial quantity of hair often yield prices above $10,000.1

“Lock of Abraham Lincoln’s Hair Given to Mary McCormick Cameron” reads the note in the gold locket. She was the daughter-in-law of Simon Cameron, Lincoln’s first Secretary of War. It sold for $38,837.50 in 2012 at Heritage Auctions. (All photos courtesy of Heritage Auctions, HA.com, unless otherwise credited.)

Even the hair of his wife Mary Todd Lincoln has auctioned, from about $600 to $3,000, as has that of her third son Willie. In 2008, a lock of his hair in a daguerreotype case with a copy of a photo of him in the facing frame sold for $11,352.50. Willie passed away in the White House at the age of 11 in February 1862, probably from typhoid.

Willie Lincoln’s hair in a daguerreotype case with a copy of his photo, $11,352.50 in 2008 at Heritage Auction. Gen. Custer’s hair cut before the Battle of the Little Bighorn sold for $21,510 in 2013.

John Wilkes Booth’s hair sold for $31,250 at Heritage Auctions in September.

In 2015, locks belonging to both Pres. Lincoln and Mary Todd, along with a mourning band worn by Interior Secretary Usher at Lincoln’s funeral, went for $30,000 at Heritage. On the other side of the Civil War, General JEB Stuart’s hair and field compass yielded $44,813.50 in 2006 at Heritage. Also, a tress belonging to Mary Surratt went for $717 in 2006. Surratt was the owner of the boarding house where the conspirators met, including John Wilkes Booth. (She was hung along with three men for the assassination of Pres. Lincoln.) A lock of Booth’s hair sold this past September for $31,250 at Heritage Auctions. It was taken surreptitiously by a guard during Booth’s post-mortem on board the monitor USS Montauk on April 27, 1865. As one would expect, George Washington’s hair is in demand. A circa 1800 American gold and pearl mourning ring with hair reported to be that of the President came in at $30,000 at Sotheby’s in 2016. In 2013, three strands of his hair went for just $537; however, a lock of 40-50 strands about seven inches long went for $18,750 in 2015, both at Heritage. From the few examples of Pres. Washington’s hair that are available, a few strands with provenance sell in the $1,000 to $5,000 range. Other celebrities and/or historical figures whose hair has found its way into collections over the years include: Geronimo: his signature and hair, $5,312; 15 strands, $1,314 (both at Heritage Auctions) Napoleon: three strands, $2,151; lock with vellum 1868 documentation, $5,975 (Heritage Auctions); with provenance,

The Heritage Auctions 2013 catalog listed this with Custer’s hair: “Before Lieutenant Colonel Custer left Fort Abraham Lincoln on his last campaign, his wife had a dream of her husband being scalped by the Indians. Upon her insistence, he cut his hair before his last battle.” Living celebrities’ hair is also collected—sometimes by celebrities themselves. In 2011, Ellen DeGeneres tweeted a request for a lock of Justin Bieber’s hair, and he brought it himself to her on her show in a signed box. It was later sold in a charity auction on eBay for $40,668 with proceeds going to The Gentle Barn animal rescue organization. The auction gathered 98 bids from 35 bidders, and it included a letter of authenticity signed by Ellen. Other living celebs with sold hair include: Mick Jagger, $6,000 at Bonham’s, and the 2013 World Series MVP David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox. His beard and the razor used to shave him sold on eBay and put $10,877 in the bank for a charity. Ortiz’s beard shavings received 132 bids from 60 bidders. Fellow teammate Shane Victorino’s beard trimmings—from the same shave-off sponsored by Gillette to

David Ortiz’s beard shavings auctioned for $11,877 for charity. (Photo: Parker Harrington, CC BY 3.0) raise money for prostate and testicular cancer—sold for $3,750 and included the razor used and his autograph. Surprisingly, the hair of historical figures like Lincoln and Washington have been made into trading cards by Topps, Upper Deck and Topps’ Allen & Ginter. Perhaps the most unique method for preserving hair is having it made into a diamond. Three hairs of Ludwig van Beethoven’s were converted to carbon and made into three diamonds by LifeGem, a company that also makes diamond memorials from the ashes of deceased loved ones. One of those .56 carat blue Beethoven diamonds sold for

$202,000 on eBay in 2007. The other two are held by LifeGem and the donor of the composer’s hair, John Reznikoff of University Archives, a seller of artifacts, letters and relics. Universityarchives.com is offering its Beethoven diamond for $125,000. For those who may think that collecting hair of long-gone historical figures and celebrities is a good way to collect DNA, be aware that a strand of hair without the below-the-skin follicle will only determine the maternal lineage.2 Only DNA from the follicle can be used to determine paternity and other genetic information. So if you are thinking about cloning Mickey Mantle or Marilyn Monroe or Triple Crown Winner Secretariat, think again—although Secretariat’s mane hair could be a deal. It sold for $2,390 in 2013. -------------1 Unless otherwise specified, all auction information listed is from Heritage Auctions, HA.com. 2 Legalgenealogist.com, “DNA and the locks of hair,” by Judy G. Art & Antiques by Dr. Lori China Tips for Your Thanksgiving Table

In the autumn of 1621, the Plymouth community and the Wampanoag Indians celebrated a harvest feast. A longstanding event in Native American culture, the harvest feast was also known as the Thanksgiving celebration. The 1621 harvest feast offered lots of meat and very few vegetables. Forks were not used and the most prominent person at the table was seated at the head of the table and was positioned closest to the food. For your Thanksgiving meal, you’ll want to invite friends and family and offer turkey with all the fixins. You may even serve it on your best china or your grandmother’s beloved serving pieces. If you are displaying vintage china, here are some tips for making the event special. Beware of lead. Some antique and vintage china may contain lead, and lead leaching can be toxic. Some of the old glazes used on pre-1900 china may contain lead. Often, highly decorated or multi-colored china may have lead glazes. Damaged, chipped, cracked or crazed (that funny zigzag pattern in the colorless glaze) china may allow lead to leach and contaminate food. So, if you have damaged pieces, don’t use them in the preparation or service of food. It is better to use them for display purposes only. It is common knowledge that grandma’s antique china should not be used in the microwave or dishwasher, but it is also a bad idea to place an old piece of china in the refrigerator piled high with leftovers. Why? Storing your leftovers in the refrigerator on an old decorated china plate is not good for the

12

lifespan of the antique nor is it good for you once you re-serve those leftovers. The plate is fragile, and cooling will impact its overall condition. Also, lead can leach from china in the refrigerator that is hosting foods high in acidity. Thus, a piece of lead glazed or lead decorated antique china that experiences a significant temperature change (as with cooling) may leach. If you must eat off of your antique china or vintage ceramic dishware, don’t do so regularly. Basic white china may be the safest type for your family and pets. It is not wise to eat off of china with painted or metallic decorations—like gold leaf or silver banding. Also, if you are in the practice of using an old ceramic bowl to feed your pets, make sure these antique or vintage ceramic pieces are not damaged in any way. You want to protect our furry friends, too! So, if you want to highlight your grandmother’s china, it is best to display the lovely pieces as a holiday centerpiece, in a china cabinet, or on the Thanksgiving buffet table hosting flowers. Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving! ------------------Ph.D. antiques appraiser, author, and award-winning TV personality, Dr. Lori presents antique appraisal events nationwide. Name This Famous Antique

by Mike McLeod This is one of the four gold medals Jesse Owens won at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. In 2013, it sold for $1,466,574 at SCP Auctions. It is not known for which event it was awarded of the four he won: 100 meters, 200 meters, 4x100 meter relay and long jump.

In 1976, President Gerald Ford awarded Jesse Owens the Presidential Medal of Freedom. President Jimmy Carter honored him with a Living Legend award in 1979, and in 1990, he was posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal by President George H.W. Bush. Jesse Owens passed away on March 31, 1980 of lung cancer. He smoked a pack of cigarettes every day for more than three decades. “Jesse” was not the birth name of James Cleveland Owens. The last of ten children born to Henry Cleveland Owens and Mary Emma Fitzgerald in Oakville, Ala., on Sept. 12, 1913, the family moved to Cleveland, Ohio, when Jesse was nine. Called “J.C.” by his family, his Ohio teacher misunderstood his Alabama-accented pronunciation of it so she

“One chance is all you need.” Of all the many awards and sports achievements Jesse Owens earned, two top the list. In May of 1935, he broke three world records and tied a fourth—all within 45 minutes—at a Big Ten track meet in Ann Arbor, Mich. He broke the world running long jump record with a leap of 26 ft. 8.25 inches, the 220-yard sprint with a time of 20.3 seconds, and the 220-yard low hurdles in 22.6 seconds. He tied the 100-yard dash record with a time of 9.4 seconds. All of this was accomplished while he was recovering from a back injury. “A lifetime of training for just ten seconds.”

Amid “Heil Hitler” salutes, Jesse Owens stands tall on top of the podium in the Berlin Olympics after winning the long jump. (Photo: Bundesarchiv, Bild 183-G00630) called him “Jesse.”1 From then on, James was known as Jesse, and that name is carved on his headstone. Even though Jesse had poor health as a young child, in junior high school he excelled in gym class, and his gym teacher guided him to the track team. At East Technical High School, Jesse matched the world record for the 100 yard dash with a time of 9.4 seconds. This caught the attention of many colleges who made offers to him, but Jesse chose Ohio State, even though it had no scholarships for track. Jesse worked his way through college at various low-paying jobs and supported his wife Ruth and his daughter Gloria.

His other greatest achievement was winning four gold medals in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin in front of Adolf Hitler. (Only two others have won four gold medals in track and field: Carl Lewis and Alvin Kraenzlein.2) Much has been made of Hitler’s refusal to shake Owens’ hand, but in fact, they did shake hands, although briefly. It was witnessed by Eric Brown, Britain’s famous WWII pilot, the first to land a plane on a ship3 and by a German sports reporter.4 Hitler left the stadium after Owens’ first victory and shook hands with no Olympians. True, Hitler planned to show Aryan superiority at the Games, and Jesse did much to disprove that; however, Germany won the most medals, besting the secondplace U.S. by 33 medals. Jesse Owens, 1936 Maybe Hitler had the last laugh at the end of the Olympics after all. Jesse later said of this, “Hitler didn’t snub me—it was FDR who snubbed me. The president didn’t even send me a telegram.”6 Owens was finally invited to the White House by President Gerald Ford in 1976 to award him the Medal of Freedom.

For much of his life, Jesse Owens reached out to underprivileged kids and motivated them to do their best. His legacy lives on in the Jesse Owens International Trophy, the highest award in track and field, which is given to the athlete who exemplifies the characteristics of its namesake. (In 2002, it was renamed the AmericanInternational Athlete Trophy.) Also, the Jesse Owens Foundation (www. jesse-owens.org) provides educational scholarships to underprivileged youths as an ongoing memorial to Jesse and Ruth Owens and to prove, as Jesse liked to say, “There is no such thing as an average kid.”

Touching Convict Love Tokens Editor’s note: The following article about convict love tokens is from an exhibit posted by the National Museum of Australia on its website, www.nma.gov.au. The messages recorded to loved ones are from those convicted of crimes and sentenced to death or transportation to serve their sentences in British colonies in the South Pacific. Smoothing and engraving a coin with a message of affection was one of the few ways a convict could leave a memento behind with loved ones in England before being transported. These small tokens are also known as “leaden hearts.” They record personal and emotional responses from convicts whose lives are more often represented by official government records. The tokens often include the names of the convict and their loved one, the length of the convict’s sentence and popular phrases and rhymes of separation. They were frequently engraved around the time of conviction for a prisoner’s loved one or family. The tokens were engraved or stippled, which involves making marks with a series of small pinpricks. They were crafted by professionals and amateurs. The National Museum of Australia holds the world’s largest collection of convict love tokens with 314, ranging in date from 1762 to 1856. The Museum purchased most of the tokens, 307, from British dealer and collector, Timothy Millett. Millett started his collection in 1984. His interest in convict love tokens began after he joined his family’s firm AH Baldwin & Sons, dealers in coins, commemorative medals, tokens and numismatic books. In 1984, one of Baldwin’s valued customers offered to sell him the 70 tokens that formed the transportation section of his numismatic collection. Millett was fascinated by these poignant keepsakes, and the tokens became the basis of his own collection. In addition to seeking out and acquiring the tokens, Millett tried to find out more information about the people named on the tokens, a task made only more difficult by the efforts of many families to cover up any evidence of a convict relation. Thanks to the efforts of Timothy Millett and other researchers, we know the identity of convicts associated with approximately 80 of the tokens in the collection. The Museum has a continuing program of research into the collection, which aims to identify further associations and links to particular individuals. The National Museum of Australia features many of the tokens on its website (http://love-tokens.nma.gov. au/highlights), and just a few of them are shown below. This token is engraved on the front with the image of a man in chains, arms outstretched. Around the border runs the text: “T C. CAST 17th JULY 1787.” On the back is engraved with the

image of a woman holding a rose in her right hand. Around the border runs the text: “To M (Mrs.) Prestrage.” “T.C.,” or Thomas Collins, 22, a laborer, was tried at the Old Bailey (the central criminal court in London) on 17 July 1787 for burgling John Hillman’s house at 5 Craven Street, Charing Cross. Collins was sentenced to death and executed at Newgate Prison on 30 August 1787. This token has a fine crisscross border, and five lines of cursive text: Dear Sarah when this you see Rembr me when In Some foreign Country On the back, it has a border of fine crosses and scallops at the top and leaves at the bottom. Two hearts crossed with arrows are engraved at the base. Four lines of cursive text say: David Freeman Born the year 1798 Banished 17th June 1818 David Freeman, 19, was tried and convicted at the Middlesex Gaol (Jail) Delivery on 17 June 1818 for pickpocketing a handkerchief worth five shillings near St. Clement’s Church in the Strand. Both he and his accomplice John Clark, 27, were sentenced to transportation for life. Freeman sailed for New South Wales on the Lord Sidmouth on 20 September 1818, arriving 11 March 1819. He received his pardon on 1 January 1841. This token is engraved with a fine rope border and two crossed hearts above six lines of cursive text: Dear Father Mother A gift to you ~ From me a friend Whose love for you Shall never end 1818

The Many Colors of Willow By Hugh Sykes To many of us, the color of the Blue Willow Pattern is just that, blue against a white background. However, the Blue Willow Pattern comes not only in the traditional blue and white that we are so familiar with but also in a multitude of other colors. While we’re also used to the Blue Willow Pattern being regularly seen on ceramic mediums such as plates and cups, its use does not stop there. The pattern can be found on glassware, metal objects, clothing, book covers, clocks, kitchen utensils and advertising pieces. This exciting Doulton vase was found not in England where the piece was made, but at a flea market in the city of Auckland, New Zealand. The thing about collecting the Blue Willow Pattern is that it is so wide and varied that collecting the pattern often crosses into many other collecting groups, in this instance, Doulton chinaware. Made according to the maker’s mark between 1902 and 1922, the vase featuring the Blue Willow Pattern in green and gold has been considered by Doulton collectors as being very rare. How it arrived at being found in Auckland remains to be answered. That said, several English china makers did produce specific ranges for the Australasian market.

From the green and gold seen on the Doulton piece, featured here is a multi-colored biscuit barrel. While it is unmarked as to maker, it would have been made in England during the 1930s. Time and the Blue Willow Pattern do not escape each other; there are many examples where clockmakers have used and still use the Blue Willow Pattern as a decorative clock face. In these examples, the pattern has been used by American clockmaker Seth Thomas on a pendulum clock and British clockmaker Continued on Page 32

Nashville Big Flea Nov. 19-20 Hosting 300 Exhibitors The first Nashville Big Flea & Antiques Market debuts Saturday and Sunday Nov. 19-20 with 300 dealers expected to exhibit at the Franklin, Tenn., AG Expo Center, according to D’Amore Promotions Show Manager Marthia Sides. “We are thrilled with the response we have received from our dealers at the DC Big Flea Market shows and also our Big Flea shows in Virginia and New York. They have given us a great start in filling this first-time show here in Nashville where there has been a void in good antiques and collectibles shows in the fall for many years,” she said. Sides said their list of dealers included many local antiques dealers, such as: West and Company with fashions from Franklin; art from Greg MacBain of Lebanon; and Carl Zehner who brings early Victrola’s from his collection here in Nashville. But there will also be a great many dealers who are travelling long distances for the show. Easter Hill Antiques Timeless Antiques.8th.H..12.08_SEA.indd of Sharon, Conn., will have a collection of early American

furniture and accessories along with 19th century silver smalls. Sport and Spool Antiques and Collectibles of Goldsboro, N.C., will offer sporting antiques along with early textiles and sewing accessories. From Washington, D.C. Antiques-Brocante will offer Country French furnishings. Chicago dealer Architectural Anarchy is bringing a mixture of folk art and Mid-Century Modern furniture for this audience. Many art dealers will be there, too, including Harry Knock from Brookhaven, N.Y. and Vimax Antiques, Brookville, Fla., and Paris Antiques, Shelbyville, Mich. will be offering vintage fashions from the past. This first Nashville Big Flea will debut Saturday Nov. 19, 9 am to 6 pm and Sunday Nov. 20, 11 am to 5 pm. The Franklin’s AG Expo Center is at 4215 Long Lane. Admission is $8, good for both days; parking is free, and there is good on-site food service. For more information, visit www.damorepromotions. com or call 757-961-3988.

Firearms Auctions in Maine, Gross $18+ million: Annie Oakley and Col. LeMat Perform Well at Julia’s Every year in October, two separate firearms auction companies conduct a firearms auction back to back in Fairfield, Maine. Each time these combined auctions occur, the results generate the largest offering and largest sale gross for a firearms auction event anywhere in the world. October 1, 2 & 3 began this spectacular event with a large offering of collectable and shooting firearms presented by the Poulin Auction Company. Their sale generated approximately $3.4 million. Immediately after, from October 4 to October 7, the James D. Julia Auction generated approximately $15 million in sales; 372 lots brought $10,000 or more, 173 lots brought $20,000 or more, 33 lots brought in an excess of $50,000 and 8 lots topped out at over $100,000. The top lot for sporting arms was Annie Oakley’s personal 12 gauge William Cashmore Boxlock game gun. There are numerous photographs of Annie holding this exact gun, and it came to the auction with a presale estimate of $125,000-$175,000, but after a fierce bidding battle, it topped out at $207,000. The most exciting Confederate lot of the day was a Krider LeMat Revolver SN 2, believed to be the personal firearms of Col. LeMat himself. It came to the auction with a presale estimate of $60,000-$80,000 and soared to $120,750.

One spectacular work of art was the magnificent Royal Wheelock sporting rifle by Samuel Kluge in Landshut. Made for either King Charles XI of Sweden or King Christian V of Denmark, it was once the property of the Rothschild Family and sold for $115,000. It is believed to be one of the highest priced wheelocks sold in many years. An early “Square Slot” Colt 1921A Thompson Machine Gun sold for $57,500. An ultra-scarce Vet Bringback Korean Manufactured Type 58 AK-47 machine gun, after a long bidding battle, generated $54,625. But the real surprise of the day in Class-3 was the fantastic Vietnam War trophy Chinese type 56 machine gun estimated at $20,00040,000 topped out at $132,250. A fine Singer Manufacturing Co. 1911A1 pistol sold for $57,500. Another area in which the Julia Firearms Auction Company has established a leadership role is that of Sporting Arms. A very fine H&H 8-bore hammer gun estimated at $15,00025,000 made $75,000. A superb 20 bore Purdey O/U with many special features carried a presale estimate of $60,00090,000 and brought above high estimate at $94,875. A superb small bore Fabbri pinless Sidelock O/U with extraordinary engraved quail scene was estimated at $40,000-60,000. The bidding however was ferocious and drove the final price to $109,250.

Julia’s next Firearms Auction is scheduled for spring of 2017 and will again include a fabulous collection of spectacular arms. James D. Julia, Inc. is one of the top 10 antique auction houses in North America as measured by annual sales. It is headquartered in Fairfield, Maine. The company also has an office just outside Boston, Massachusetts, in Woburn and has been in business for nearly 50 years. For more information on James D. Julia, Inc., visit www. jamesdjulia.com. By Deborah Abernethy and Mike McLeod $10,902 (13 bids, 5 bidders): Antique Papier-mache Clockwork Rabbit and 3 Bunnies-All Nodders and Mouth Moves. A large Father Rabbit with three bunnies tucked inside the waist of his pants. When wound up, his head with big glass eyes rocks back and forth with the tick-tock of a clock, and his mouth opens and closes. The bunnies’ heads also rock back and forth but not all together, as each one rocks a bit off time. There was a note with this treasured rabbit that he has had a couple of old repairs: one ear re-glued and one bottom foot, as well as a couple of the bunny ears, but done well by a good repairer. It was packed away for who knows how long in tissue and an old sheet in a storage box. His framework seems good and steady, not a wobbly body. These old treasures are ever increasingly hard to find, especially in this condition. There is probably a bit of dust here and there, but the clothes are original and not in bad condition. The winding mechanism works smoothly; the rabbits have a good strong movement and will run until wound down, unless you stop it manually, and then re-start when you want by just tipping the big guy’s head. I do not now who made him, sorry no tag of identification and no clue on estate notes. DBA: A clockwork mechanism is essentially a wind-up toy. While this technology has been around for centuries, this particular papier-mache object was probably made around 1900. This is on the high side for this category of toy. It is just a little on the high side as I could find quite a few that have sold for $8,000. The condition issues would ruin almost any other category of object. The first papier-mache was made in 1772 by Henry Clay (British). Made of paper, glue, chalk and other ingredients, it is molded and baked. It can then be painted. The 19th century wares were usually painted black and then adorned with mother-of-pearl and lots of painted designs. On another note, during WWII metals were restricted due to the war effort, and many items were made of papier-mache that would have previously been made in metal. $172.50 (15 bids, 8 bidders): Staffordshire Figural Pottery, Colonial Man and Woman Pocket Watch Holder. I have just finished searching the internet, and I can find many examples of antique Staffordshire pocket watch holders but not one exactly like the example in this auction. This Victorian-period, painted pocket watch holder depicts a woman and man dressed in 18th century clothing. They are holding a wreath with a large blue bow in the center, which has a 1 1/8-inch diameter opening. Measuring 6 inches tall by 5.5 inches by 3 inches at

the base, this 19th century Staffordshire case is in very good condition with no restorations. We did find that there are a couple of tiny and shallow glaze flecks to the back, as well as a small chip to the front of the base. (Photo: eBay seller wwolst12) DBA: Central England is home to the ceramic industry which has become known as Staffordshire. Plentiful clay and coal for fuel was available there. This area became known for the wares for the middle class and the more “everyday” wares of the upper class. The watch holder was one such ware for the middle class. The pocket watch was placed in the holder, turning the set into a mantle clock, and became a place to harbor the valuable pocket watch. Compared to prices for such wares, the buyer got a good deal.

Craftsman style, the American version of the British Arts and Crafts movement. His American Craftsman style reflected his principles of simplicity, honestly in construction, and truth in materials. His work was considered the best of that style. If you search for other chairs, even Gustav Stickley chairs, you will find that this one is a much higher price than those. Why is this one so much more? It is particularly his early furniture, produced between 1901 and 1904, that is considered rare and extremely collectible. That this one has an original finish and original rush seat adds additional money. Gustav Stickley had two other brothers in the furniture business so there are several shop marks. One must be careful to check the labels carefully when considering a purchase. Even with this one unmarked, there are plenty of published resources to identify that this one is the real deal. Currently, this would be considered a retail price. The prices for Gustav Stickley have fluctuated in recent years. Probably, the highest prices paid were in the 1990s. -------------------------- Deborah Abernethy is a certified appraiser with the International Association of Appraisers. $2,025 (24 bids, 11 bidders): Antique Yellow National Bitters Patent 1867 Figural Ear of Corn Glass Bottle. Very nice old figural corn bottle! Measures approximately 12.25 inches tall. Appears to have some bubbles/lines in glass at top the around rim. I honestly cannot tell if they are simple glass flaws or tiny cracks that have happened over time. (Photo: eBay seller antiquegirl530) DBA: While this may seem like a high price for an antique bottle, I could find several that have sold for more money. It is more of a retail price rather than an auction price. Given that information, I would say that this was a fair deal with neither having the advantage or “good luck”. These bottles were made in 1867 by Walton & Co. in Philadelphia, Penn., and are very scarce. Figural bitters bottles garner a lot of interest, and this area of collecting has been around for many years. $4,751 (31 bids, 5 bidders): Rare Gustav Stickley Circa 1900-1902 Armchair with Rush Seat. Estatefresh armchair with original rush seat and original untouched finish. This chair is unsigned but clearly Gustav Stickley. If you look at Gustav Stickley’s catalog in 1900, there is a very similar chair, but it has a leather seat and is titled, “Spanish Arm Chair Number 2576.” The chair measures 27 inches tall to the top of the front arm; 39.25 inches Spend an hour or a day at one of the Best Antique Malls in the Country tall from the top of the back of the chair to the floor; 21 inches across the back • 45,000 sq. ft. one-story facility • 300+ dealers • La Petite Tearoom of the chair; 25 inches across the front • Located near the Pottery Factory and the outlet centers from corbel to corbel; 18.5 inches deep 500 Lightfoot Road • Williamsburg, VA 23188 on the bottom of the chair; 19.25 inches From I-64 take exit 234 east onto 199, exit at Mooretown Road West. This token may relate to John Camplin, 15, who was tried and convicted at Middlesex Gaol Delivery for stealing a silver watch. Initially sentenced to death, this was later commuted to transportation for life. He sailed for Van Diemen’s Land (the island of Tasmania, now part of Australia) on the Surrey in September 1818. Camplin’s conduct record makes depressing reading. He was subjected to numerous official lashings and had his sentence extended by three years in 1833. His record shows that he was fined for drunkenness and theft on several occasions. A pierced and silvered token engraved with a stippled, scalloped border and the image of a man shooting birds with his dog. Around the figures are stippled words:

Cowley 1829 The back is engraved with a stippled scalloped border and the image of a hat with two feathers and stippled cursive text: When this you see Remember me and bear me in your mind let all the World say what they will dont prove to me Unkind It is likely that this token relates to David Poultney, 20, weaver and laborer, who was tried and convicted at the Warwick Assizes in April 1829 for attempted murder. Poultney was one of a group of poachers known as the Newham Paddox poachers, who were involved in an incident on land belonging the Lord of Denbigh. The group shot at, and wounded, the gamekeeper. Poultney was initially sentenced to death, but this was commuted to 14 years transportation, possibly because of a petition for clemency from local inhabitants, who testified to Poultney’s previous good conduct and character. Poultney sailed for Van Diemen’s Land on the Thames on 31 July 1829, arriving on 20 November. Records show that he was assigned to the police department shortly after his arrival in Hobart as a “field” police officer. He received his conditional pardon on 9 May 1836. In 1837, he married Annie Watts, and they had 10 children. Poultney became a successful and respected landowner in the Hobart district, and died in 1884. This token has a zigzag border and a crossed heart.

to transportation for life, and sailed for Van Diemen’s Land on the Moffatt on 29 January 1834. As he could not write, he had someone else make at least two beautifully engraved keepsakes, one for his mother, the other to an unknown person. Immediately on arrival in the colony, Alsop was assigned to a chain gang. When he tried to abscond in July 1835, Alsop was sentenced to 36 lashes. His record shows that between 1836 and 1847, he committed numerous offences including refusing to work, stealing cattle, representing himself as a constable and absconding. Despite being sentenced to life and numerous additional punishments, Alsop was granted a conditional pardon on 7 November 1848, and a full pardon on 5 February 1850. Like many other convicts, he remained in the colony as he could not afford the fare to return to Great Britain. Alsop married Irish-born Sarah Eliza Kirk, 15 years his junior. In 1854, they had a son, Thomas, and 16 months later they had a daughter, Sarah. At that time, Alsop was working as a fish hawker and lived in Hobart. He died in 1891. *** There are 63 tokens posted on the National Museum of Australia’s website (http://love-tokens.nma.gov.au/highlights), and it shows both sides of the tokens and the information engraved on them. Name This Famous Person By Mike McLeod

Albrecht Durer was born in Nuremberg, Bavaria, on May 21, 1471. He became one of the greatest artists of the Renaissance. His father was a goldsmith, and from him, he learned skills that he put to use as an engraver. Dürer’s printmaking and engraving made him famous across Europe with a wide dispersion of his work. Dürer traveled much studying art, and he corresponded with Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael. He was employed by Holy Roman Emperor Maximillian I. Also an author, Dürer wrote Four Books on Human Proportion, The Teaching of Measurements (a book on geometry), and Instructions of the Fortifications of Towns, Castles and Large Villages. Sometimes, it is best for an artist’s work and words to speak for himself.

Having never seen an Indian rhinoceros, Durer created this woodcut from just a description and a rough sketch given to him.

Portrait of Maximillian I, 1518. “No single man can be taken as a model for a perfect figure, for no man lives on earth who is endowed with the whole of beauty.”

Young Hare, 1502.

Virgin and Child with a Pear, 1512. “The artist is chosen Woodcut of The Rhinoceros, 1515. “If a man devotes himself by God to fulfill his commands and must never be to art, much evil is avoided that happens otherwise if one is overwhelmed by public opinion.” idle.” 30 Read the Southeastern Antiquing Magazine at www.antiquingmagazine.com --and tell your friends.

Dürer also painted and engraved works featuring groups of people and buildings, such as Adoration of the Magi and The Triumphal Arch. He is famous for: Adam and Eve; Apocalypse (a series); Knight, Death, and the Devil; Saint Jerome in his Study; and Praying Hands. This year, a bronze engraving by Dürer was found at a French flea market and purchased for a few euros. The new owner donated the work, Mary Crowned by an Angel, to the Staatsgalerie museum in Stuttgart, Germany, where it once resided.2 Albrecht Dürer passed away on April 6, 1528, but almost five centuries later, he remains recognized as one of the great artists of the Renaissance. He was correctly identified by Ted Carlton of Utah and Sherron Lawson. -------------------1 National Gallery of Art, nga.gov, “Dürer, Albrecht.” 2 Breitbart.com, “500-year-old German engraving surfaces at French flea market,” Aug. 5, 2016. The Many Colors of Blue Willow Continued From Center

Smiths on a tin plate clock. The application of the pattern to the Seth Thomas clock face is interesting as it has been applied on paper and lacquered. The Blue Willow Pattern has been used on numerous forms of glassware over the years. In some forms of glassware, the pattern has been molded into the glass so it appears either etched or impressed; add to that, the glass can either be clear or colored. In other forms, such as this Japanese decanter set made in the 1960s, the Blue Willow Pattern is seen in gold against a blue-colored glass. Again, the Blue Willow Pattern crosses into another collecting group, being the world of decanters. Collectors of gold sovereigns will more than likely have a sovereign case to hold some of their precious gold coins, be this for practical storage or display. Surprisingly, or perhaps unsurprisingly, the Blue Willow Pattern in enamel has been used to decorate this silver sovereign case. Being silver and having British hallmarks, this sovereign case comes from the British city of Birmingham and was made in 1909.

This yellow pitcher and wash bowl with a blue undertone also features the Blue Willow Pattern in a multi-colored pattern. While being very decorative, these unmarked English-made pieces from the 1930s would have been accompanied by a chamber pot and used in a practical sense—the pitcher and bowl resting on a wash stand with the chamber pot most likely being out of sight, perhaps under a bed.

In addition to being found in different colors, the Blue Willow Pattern has been modified to a “parody pattern.” With this piece, on first glance the theme of the pattern looks pretty regular, but on closer examination, you’ll see that aspects of the pattern have been replaced. Pictured here is a plate produced by Gladstone Pottery of England which has produced a number of Blue Willow Pattern-inspired souvenir plates and ornaments for towns and cities across Britain. With the plates, the Blue Willow Pattern has been used but varied to incorporate local attractions. In this plate representing the English city of Lincoln, aspects of the Blue Willow Pattern have been varied to show Lincoln Cathedral and a World War II Lancaster bomber (which were flown from nearby airfields). Here is a Toby Jug where the Blue Willow Pattern has been used. Again, we see collecting of the Blue Willow Pattern crossing

over into another collecting group. I have personally seen around 20 Toby jugs with different versions of the Blue Willow Pattern on them. That said, Toby collectors will confirm these jugs have been made by hundreds of makers in different countries, so there could be quite a few more. For those interested in Toby jugs, there is an American Toby Jug Museum which can be found in Evanston, Illinois, or at www. tobyjugmuseum.com.

high tins contained Victory V Lozenges and are decorated with the Blue Willow Pattern. The lozenges were first made by Thomas Fryer of England in 1864, he being inspired by the famous British Naval Admiral Horatio Nelson and his Royal Navy Ship Victory. As a palliative for the common cold, the lozenges contained chlorodyne, a mix of chloroform and cannabis, which proved to be very popular. These tins were probably made around the 1920s when the lozenges were available globally. Victory V Lozenges—without chlorodyne—are still available today in Britain. Found in Australia, this small metal plate measuring about 3.5 inches across, which was made in England, is unusual as the Blue Willow Pattern is pressed into the metal as opposed to

The use of the Blue Willow Pattern to decorate biscuit tins over the years has been quite prevalent. In my books, Advertising A To Z Featuring The Blue Willow, Parts 1 and 2, I show biscuit tins from the USA, UK and South Africa; all of which feature the Blue Willow Pattern. Here we have a biscuit tin made and printed in the 1950s by Wilson Bros Pty Ltd of Melbourne, Australia, for the Phoenix Biscuit Company Pty Ltd, also of Melbourne. As many collectors of tins will know, Wilson Bros are better known today by their simple brand name of Willow, and yes, in their own right have also produced

their own range of tins featuring the Blue Willow Pattern. As for the Phoenix Biscuit Company, they later became part of Weston’s Biscuits, a multi-national biscuit brand. Whatever you are collecting, it is always great when you find an item that has been incorrectly made, and because of this, it is quite rare and sometimes has an additional value. At first glance, this shaving mug on the one side shows a variant of the Blue Willow Pattern, but when turned around, it shows something quite different: “Simple Simon went a-fishing.” It is probably a one-off or part of a limited production. The fun of collecting is looking for the story or history behind the piece. These 12-inchVictory Lozenges

being etched. Novelty, Japanese, Fish and the Blue Willow Pattern all come together in the form of these open-mouth fish and whaleshaped ashtrays. Made during the 1960s and ‘70s, they can usually be found in most antique malls across the country. Use of the Blue Willow Pattern has not been limited to novelty fish and whales, it has also been used with cats, dogs, pigs, birds and rabbits. -------------Hugh Sykes is a past president of International Willow Collectors, a group based in the USA; details of which may be found on the website www.willowcollectors.org. He has also written two books on how the Blue Willow Pattern has been used in advertising. Information on his books may be found at www.redwillow3.wix.com/book. Both books are proudly held in the Smithsonian Library.

Civil War COLLECTOR The

By John Sexton

I’ve had these Civil War medals sitting in a drawer forever. What you can tell me about them? I would also like a value put on them if you could, please. I would also think about selling them. JS: Your medals are in a bit of disrepair, but dealers in such will restore and put them back together. The GAR membership medal and top bar have a broken American flag ribbon. The “WAR OF 1861” top bar once attached to the silver ID pin and was presented to sergeant Robert Holliday of the 30th NY. It is the best medal, being a unique camp presentation. This unit was formed in Albany, N.Y., in June 1861, served until just after Chancellorsville, and mustered out back to Albany in June 1863. Holliday entered service as sergeant, was demoted back to private, and later made sergeant again when transferred from Co. G to Co. F, May 1, 1862. The First Brigade reunion badge is complete, and the group as-is would sell at a Civil War show for between $300 and $500.

Needless to say, I didn’t throw it away but kept it instead because I found it very odd. I have researched what I could and found nothing compared to it. I originally thought it was a dog chew toy or some kind of workout or medicine ball or something used for industry or manufacturing. There are no markings on it, but it is very decayed for a rubber ball object. I first thought that those were bite marks from a dog; however, the rubber is very hard and too hard to puncture. Incredibly, the ball still bounces. It is exactly five inches in diameter and weighs about 7.5-8 pounds. This is very puzzling to me, and I was wondering if it was something used during the Civil War, given the history of the area where I found it. When I showed a couple of friends the other day, they said it was a cannonball, but I’m not sure because I couldn’t imagine a rubber cannonball, but who knows? JS: I have no idea. There were no “bouncy” rubber balls during the war. Not sure when natural rubber was used as such, but this seems too dense to be natural. Hard rubber, which was invented by Charles Goodyear in the1840s, is not elastic, so I can’t help. I imagine this is a wellweathered toy of unknown age. There were no hard rubber toy balls during the Civil War. John, can you help me with some info on the knife shown in the attached photos? JS: This knife is one of many seen today—newly made but sold as an antique online, at a flea market, antique show, auction and other venues as “authentic Civil War,” but it is not. Whoever made this knife is probably making another one to fool the public as I write this. Knives of this style that are sold as what they actually are—newly made—can be found for $30-$40.

Various medals, the best being the Sgt. Robert Holliday presentation medal. All worth $300-$500. Here is a very strange item I have had in my possession for a little while now, at least since 2011, I think. For as long as I can remember, I have loved getting out of the house to go somewhere and explore around town and clean up along my way at the places I visit. One day, I found myself at a pretty decent-sized park in southeast Atlanta called South Bend Park and decided to stroll around and explore while I cleaned up the neglected trash. I discovered this solid and heavy rubber ball in the creek area while picking up garbage. I thought it was garbage so I picked it up and discovered how very heavy it is for its size.

A number of years ago, I was given a collection of Civil War memorabilia, a few boxes of old letters written between a soldier and his family back home. If for no other reason than insurance purposes, I would love to have the collection appraised, but I haven’t known quite where to start. Can you give me some idea of how I would go about this? JS: Civil War letters are the most common items that survive the Civil War. They vary in price from a few dollars to a few hundred dollars, depending on content. If you have a fine set of letters that read like a book that can’t be put down, they could have value. If they are mundane—talking about the weather, food, seeing Abraham Lincoln or Robert E. Lee, or speaking of religion—few people care. You can find comparable sales of similar-sized lots to what you have on specialized auctions such as Heritage Auctions in Dallas, Texas, or Cowan’s Auctions in Cincinnati, Ohio. ---------------John Sexton is an independent appraiser and expert of Civil War memorabilia. He is an accredited member of various appraiser organizations. He can be contacted at 770-329-4984 or www. CivilWarDealer.com.
