We were delighted that the decision was finally taken in 2014 for delivery of the new locks. They will serve as the basis for the further solid growth of our region as an international logistics hub. Construction of the new sea locks is due to start in 2016. They will be able to accommodate the next generation of cargo and cruise vessels and ensure maximum operational availability 24/7.

The four ports that make up the single entity of Amsterdam Seaports handle a combined total of almost 100 million tons of cargo. After Rotterdam, Antwerp and Hamburg, this makes Amsterdam Seaports the fourth largest in Europe. As a versatile cargo handling and transport centre, Amsterdam Seaports welcomes practically all types of goods with the notable exception of crude oil (there are no refineries in the area). The terminals handle dry, liquid and break bulk, container and Ro/ Ro cargo. The port of Zaanstad is situated north of Amsterdam, while west of the city in the North Sea coastal area are the two ports of IJmuiden and Beverwijk. These are situated at the entrance to the North Sea Canal where the steel and paper industry, short sea shipping, fishing, offshore (including wind energy), ferry and cruise traffic are all thriving.

Amsterdam Amsterdam is by far the largest port of the four. Deep-water quays as well as facilities along the rail and road links are available at reasonable terms. Companies have settled in the new Africa harbour (‘Afrikahaven’) port basin area. Along its 3,600-metre quay is a zone for new cargo handling activities and – further away from the waterfront – distribution and logistics activities. Near the city centre the modern Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA) accommodates between 140 and 150 large cruise vessels annually, while some 1,500 river cruise vessels per year also call at Amsterdam. IJmuiden Entering the port area from the North Sea, IJmuiden is a rapidly growing tidal port with three port basins. Its harbour is designed for short sea shipping, reefer warehousing and offshore oil, gas and wind energy supply

activities. IJmuiden is Europe’s largest fisheries centre, a cruise and ferry port and an offshore base at the same time. It is also an industrial city, with the Tata Steel complex located on the north bank of the port entrance. Beverwijk East of the sea locks, Beverwijk is the first port on the North Sea Canal. It is a general cargo port handling agricultural products, timber and fertiliser. The port is often called the ‘potato capital of Europe’ as large quantities of Dutch seed potatoes are exported via Beverwijk, while Mediterranean potatoes are imported. Both IJmuiden and Beverwijk are centres for cold and frozen warehousing of fish, meat, poultry, fruit and vegetables. Zaanstad Located on the north bank of the North Sea Canal, Zaanstad is the Netherlands’ main centre for the processing, storage and distribution of foodstuffs. Ask the managers of international companies in Amsterdam what sets this region apart from other interesting options from which to do business in Europe and you will receive a wide variety of responses. Some will stress the fact that nearly all European multinational companies are represented in Amsterdam, others will comment on the international mindset of Amsterdam’s population, while others still will talk about the city’s multicultural strengths. In addition, there are those who will praise Amsterdam’s excellent physical and digital networks or the inspiring energy of this centuries-old trading city with its rich cultural heritage. All these points of view are justified

and yet Amsterdam has even more equally persuasive qualities. Anyone who visits the city and tastes its unique atmosphere can vouch for that. Amsterdam as logistics hub With an added value of more than € 16 billion per annum, logistics is the AMA’s third most important economic sector, after the business and financial services sectors. Despite the economic crisis, the region’s logistics sector has experienced strong growth over recent years. The strengthening of Amsterdam’s business climate and competitive position as a logistics hub is high on the political and business agenda, and logistics is one of the nine leading sectors in the Netherlands. cabinet’s coalition agreement has identified the logistics mainports of Amsterdam and Rotterdam as spearheads in the Netherlands’ spatial-economic policy. The strongest and most distinctive points relating to the AMA are reviewed below. Amsterdam: European and global logistics hub Connectivity is by far the AMA’s strongest asset as a logistics hub. With Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, the Port of Amsterdam and the Aalsmeer flower auction (FloraHolland), the region boasts a unique combination of logistical hubs. The (infrastructural) connections between the AMA and logistical hubs throughout Europe and the rest of the

companies is an important factor in establishing themselves in the region. The Netherlands is known worldwide for its attractive fiscal climate, which stimulates entrepreneurship and foreign investment. For logistics companies in particular, the Netherlands has introduced various regulations that are unique within Europe and which are highly appreciated by the sector.

In addition to the benefits of Schiphol’s position, the region’s excellent connectivity can also be attributed to the proximity of Amsterdam’s seaport (number four in Europe). More than 95 million tons of goods pass through the Amsterdam Port Region each year and the world’s largest petroleum and cocoa port is also a leader in energy and agriculture.

Compared to competing countries, the Netherlands has the lowest rate of corporation tax (25%) and agreements can be reached with the Inland Revenue related to so-called advance tax rulings, which provide assurances on tax liabilities up to a maximum of ten years. Another benefit is the expat ruling for qualified foreign employees, who pay no tax on the first 30% of their earnings for a period of eight years.

Alongside its strong ‘traditional’ infrastructure, Amsterdam’s ICT infrastructure is another USP. AMS-IX, the world’s largest internet exchange point, plays a central role in this. The logistics of people and goods (including E-business) goes hand in hand with strong growth in the exchange of digital information and data streams. The presence of an Airport/Seaport, Greenport and Dataport puts Amsterdam at the forefront of the logistics market of the future. The combination of these three strong markets, plus its traditional infrastructure and ICT network, means that Amsterdam can meet the logistics market’s increasing demands for faster and more integrated multimodal solutions which respond to specific client needs: by air, sea, inland waterway, road, rail and internet. Work is continuously being carried out on the optimisation of connections between various markets, for example through the opening up of the new A5 motorway (‘Westrandweg’), which places the port, airport and flower auction within 15 minutes of each other. The planned implementation of an integrated customs control and the linking of the port community systems for Amsterdam and Rotterdam (PortBase) and Schiphol (Cargonaut) are further steps forward. On a global level, the AMA can be compared with the world’s largest Airport-Seaport combinations, such as Dubai, Singapore, New York, Shanghai and Hong Kong. Amsterdam is a European and global logistics hub Attractive fiscal climate Just as in other sectors, the fiscal climate (customs and tax regulations) for logistics

In addition to these general tax benefits, the Netherlands offers attractive fiscal benefits for logistics companies in particular. Customs Bonded Warehousing, for example, allows the payment of customs obligations to be postponed until goods leave the storage depot en route to a destination within the EU. And this charge is not levied at all on goods destined for outside the EU.

world are excellent. With 317 routes, Schiphol is second only to Paris Charles de Gaulle within Europe in terms of its (inter)national flight route network. In terms of freight, with 1.5 million tons, Schiphol is Europe’s third largest airport, behind Frankfurt and Paris, and is placed fourth when it comes to passengers. For years, Schiphol has been consistently voted one of the best airports in the world.

A VAT Deferment System provides benefits in terms of cash flow: in the Netherlands and Belgium, VAT does not need to be paid at the time goods are imported but can be settled monthly, for example. In conclusion: the customs service is proactive and businessminded. The declaration process is digitised, resulting in less administration and quicker processing of goods for logistics companies. Triple Helix Another of Amsterdam’s strengths concerns the logistical innovation and cooperation between the government, knowledge institutions and the business community: the Triple Helix. Under the banner of the Amsterdam Economic Board, these parties are working together on the Smart Logistics Amsterdam innovation programme. Adopting a demand-driven approach, this aims to improve the logistics chain in terms of time, costs, flexibility and sustainability. A strong, active government is essential for the development and implementation of an attractive spatial-economic policy and the co-financing of education, research and development, with the help of such knowledge institutes as the Free University (VU) and the University of Amsterdam (UvA),

university colleges and the leading logistics institute Dinalog. The direct involvement of the business community creates the conditions in which to track trends and needs (market intelligence) and to translate visions and concepts into practical, working solutions, as well as the development and marketing of innovative business locations, such as those along the so-called ‘Logistics Westside’. This is the corridor between the three large logistics hubs of Greenport Aalsmeer, Schiphol and the Port of Amsterdam, which fan out in an easterly direction towards the new cities of Almere and Lelystad. Concrete innovations are also being developed, through projects such as SmartGate Cargo (an improved and faster checking process for outgoing international air freight) and Circle Lines (the development of multimodal transportation). As the name of the project suggests, Seamless Connections are being realised in the process chain, through digitisation of the process, adjustments to existing rules and practices, and the efficient use of multimodal infrastructure. This will result in a time saving of 25% on the entire logistical process.

The concentration of higher-educated and specialised service providers is also a breeding ground for a strong creative industry (media, fashion) and for other innovative economic clusters (life sciences, high-tech, aerospace, food and flowers). Logistics is the thread that joins all of these clusters together.

In addition, sustainable production and sustainable living conditions are preconditions for the service economy of the future and are high on the region’s social agenda. The Port of Amsterdam has expressed its ambition to make a substantial contribution towards a transition to sustainable energy and an organic-based economy. Sustainable development is also an important starting point for new work locations. The combination of multimodal accessibility, sustainability, cost efficiency and the concentration of innovative sectors and disciplines is the engine powering continuous innovation and, with it, the growth of the Amsterdam economy and logistics sector.

Human capital Another of Amsterdam’s strengths is its human capital, which is a secondary but not to be underestimated requirement for the establishment of international businesses in the region. With two universities and two higher-education colleges, the AMA offers a wide range of logistics courses at all levels. The quality of the courses (including those on logistics) and the number of students involved result in a dynamic transfer of knowledge between the education sector and the business community. Many studies have also

Strong, sustainable service hub The AMA is increasingly developing itself to become a service hub. The field of logistics is no longer limited to the storage and transhipment of goods. The growth and complexity of global streams of goods and people is making the management and ‘control’ of these streams increasingly important. Logistics is becoming a much more knowledge-intensive business sector. The Amsterdam port regionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dry and liquid bulk cargo throughput has risen to such an extent in recent years that it has developed into the leading European fuel transhipment port. In addition to the storage and distribution of fuels, value-added activities by the terminals such as blending and upgrading have made Amsterdam a port of increasing interest to the solid and liquid fuel markets. With oil and coal products accounting for some 70% of transhipments, the Amsterdam port region can truly be called an energy port. Amsterdam is also the second largest European coal transhipment port. In addition, the Amsterdam port region has both the ambition and location to become a leader in sustainable and renewable energy. As well as being the largest petrol port worldwide, Amsterdam also plays a role in diesel importation for the European consumer market. Internationally, Amsterdam is an indispensable second gateway for the import

of energy products for German and Dutch energy plants. The number of companies generating sustainable energy in Amsterdam Seaports is growing rapidly. Waste and Energy Company (AEB Amsterdam) does so by incinerating waste, 48% of which is biomass. The power plants have a capacity of 124 megawatt, producing 1 million megawatt hours annually. This provides electricity for some 320,000 households, 75% of the City of Amsterdamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s total. The new Greenmills plant produces sustainable biofuels and green energy from organic waste products such as frying oil. Biofuel is the collective name for different types of fuels that are made from organic (plant and animal) matter. The plant converts 100,000 tons of organic waste into 115 million litres of sustainable biodiesel and 25 million cbm of biogas.

The biodiesel plant of Vesta Biofuels has been converting vegetable crops into biodiesel since 2011. The plant has a flexible layout and uses various resources, from rapeseed oil to waste flows, and its capacity is 200,000 tons of biodiesel a year (approximately 230 million litres). The biodiesel plant is located on the premises of Oiltanking Amsterdam, which provides Vesta with port facilities such as quays, tanks, storage, transhipment and blending. Located in the heart of the Netherlands, the Amsterdam port region is ideally located to service offshore oil, gas and wind farm operations on the North Sea. There are excellent maintenance and modification facilities in the area and dedicated quay space for supply vessels and offshore work ships. Maintenance, modification and decommissioning of offshore platforms, offshore drilling support and supply are the main areas of expertise. Amsterdam is the largest cacao port in the world. The region is responsible for 13% of global cacao processing, which mainly takes place in Zaanstad. The beans are imported from West Africa over sea in bulk or containers. Cacao illustrates the strong position of the food cluster in the region, which offers all functionalities within the chain: from transport and transhipment to industrial processing, logistics, wholesale, retail and office activities. The food cluster as a whole is much more extensive than just cacao or the port alone. It represents approximately â&#x201A;Ź 2.2 billion and over 20,000 jobs in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area (AMA). Other important segments in the food cluster include fresh and deep-frozen fish (IJmuiden), seed potatoes (Beverwijk), and coffee, tea, nuts, juices, oleiferous seeds, fats and animal feed (Amsterdam).

employment and 40% of all export in the AMA. The manufacturing industry includes a heterogeneous collection of companies.

Several sectors are especially well represented in the region, such as steel manufacturing and processing in the IJmond area, and mechanical engineering, chemistry and recycling in the Zaan region and Amsterdam. Companies in the recycling sector (varying from household waste to ferrous and nonferrous) produce raw materials. The Amsterdam port region is an important location for major parties specialised in the recycling of scrap, paper, glass, plastics, rubber, textile, rare metals and industrial/construction waste. Due to its current position in the field of agribulk, mineral energy and recycling, the port has all the infrastructure, knowledge and market channels required for the transhipment of organic energy sources.

Amsterdam port is a major logistic hub for the manufacturing industry and wholesalers. This involves, among others, the import of raw materials and semi-manufactured products for industries such as steel, wood and paper, and products for the fashion industry, offshore wind turbine parks, the automotive industry and equipment manufacturers. General cargo involves a wide range of goods, such as project cargo (wind turbines, for example), Ro-Ro (roll-on roll-off ), general cargo and containers. The Amsterdam port region has a relatively large foundation in (semi-) industrial goods. Partly due to the port region of Amsterdam, Schiphol Airport, Greenport Aalsmeer (the world trade centre for flowers and plants) and AMS-IX (Amsterdam Internet Exchange; the main internet hub of the Netherlands) the logistic sector in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area has been known as an economic heavyweight for years.

Amsterdam is also a player in the deep-sea container segment, and actively supports the container hub Rotterdam. Within the container market it has its own niche position, with a focus on the cargo that is transported to and from the natural hinterland as well as cargo from sectors in which Amsterdam is traditionally a major player, such as Africa, Latin America and the Baltic States.

The city of Amsterdam itself continues to be a major tourist attraction, as are destinations such as the Keukenhof (famous for its flowers) and Zaanse Schans (popular due to its windmills). The proximity of Schiphol is the icing on the cake. Not only does the Dutch capital serve as a transit port, it is also a

The Amsterdam port region is an attractive destination for cruise ships, welcoming 182 ocean cruisers in 2014 (126 at the terminal in Amsterdam and 56 at the cruise terminal in IJmuiden). Amsterdam is also a major cruise port for North Sea city trips and fjord excursions. River cruises are another growth market, with 1,692 river cruise ships in 2014.

The European cruise market is growing, and the amount of cruise ships is increasing both in number and in size. Although the cruising season traditionally runs from April to October, demand is also growing in the other months. The Amsterdam port region has managed to tie a wide range of cruise segments to the metropolitan region; from luxury cruises in the highest segment to city trips.

Within the Amsterdam port region, these companies are concentrated in the Atlas Park, the Vervoerscentrum (Transport Centre), the Alfadriehoek (Alpha Triangle) and Stadhaven Minerva (City Port Minerva) areas. The Atlas Park is the zone for large-scale (European) distribution centres, the Vervoerscentrum is dedicated to more regionally oriented distribution activities, and the Alfadriehoek has a mixed profile. The authentic character of Stadhaven Minerva has proven to be a good source of inspiration for creative businesses.

The opening of the new A5 motorway has significantly improved both the accessibility and visibility of the port region. This is why the connecting area along the A5 between the port and Schiphol Airport is often referred to as the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Logistic West Axisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. Port of Amsterdam, the regional business association ORAM and Air Cargo Netherlands (ACN) established the Airport Seaport cooperative to optimise the synergies of this airport/seaport location. Its goal is to attract more cargo flows and new companies by offering the best possible business climate with, for instance, a good infrastructure and modern IT facilities as well as locations for new offices, distribution centres and production facilities; space that is readily available in the Amsterdam area. ‘Amsterdam Airport Seaport’, clearly shows the added value of the combined services of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and the Amsterdam port region. Examples include coordinated custom checks, joint innovation and research projects (in the field of mobility, for instance) and joint professional training via uniform logistics courses in order to ensure sufficient qualified personnel for the future. Other examples of the cooperation between airport and seaport are the feasibility projects with wireless communication (Radio Frequency Identification, RFID) between Air France-KLM and the port of Amsterdam, and the fast processing of passengers at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to the cruise ships in the ports of Amsterdam and IJmuiden.

Atlaspark One of the most strategic locations between the Amsterdam port area and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is the Atlaspark. This 110-hectare business park is part of the port of Amsterdam, near terminals and only a ten minute drive form the airport. Atlaspark is mainly intended for (international) companies in distribution, logistics and the manufacturing industry. It offers the latest facilities in the field of information technology (broadband networks), security and collective personnel transport. A company such as Hitachi Construction Machinery, located in the port of Amsterdam, is a good example of how companies benefit from the Airport Seaport concept. While the construction machinery arrives by RoRo vessels at the port of Amsterdam, the proximity of Schiphol Airport is extremely important to the Japanese firm as it receives clients and agents for training sessions and demonstrations on a weekly basis. Oil products and coal make up the majority of the inland shipping transport from Amsterdam. Terminals such as Vopak Westpoort Terminal, Oiltanking Amsterdam, BP Amsterdam Terminal, Eurotank Amsterdam, NuStar Terminals and Hydrocarbon Hotel use the inland waterways for the transit of oil products to the hinterland, while the two large dry bulk transhipment companies ‘OBA Bulk Terminal’ and ‘Rietlanden Terminals’ deploy freight trains, inland vessels and push barges to transport coal to the European markets. Cargill and IGMA transport raw materials for the cattle feed industry to factories in the Netherlands and other European countries via inland shipping and rail. Various container service barge companies shuttle back and forth between Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Antwerp and the German hinterland several times a week. The sailing time between Amsterdam and Duisburg, a major intermodal hub in the Ruhr region, is only sixteen hours. Intermodal network The Amsterdam port region is at the heart of the intermodal network centred around container transfer points on industrial sites and inland ports, where trucks can deliver containers for onward transport through the

Netherlands on inland vessels. To meet the expected growth in the number of containers in the port of Rotterdam and strengthen Amsterdam’s position as a transfer hub for the north of the Netherlands, the network will include separate line services for large inland vessels. These barges will go back and forth between the ports of Rotterdam and Amsterdam.

Ter Haak Intermodal implemented a new rail container shuttle from the port of Amsterdam to Berlin. The shuttle departs from the USA Terminal in Amsterdam once a week with more than 1,000 tons of cocoa loaded in bulk containers. The new connection will allow Amsterdam to strengthen its storage and transhipment capacity and reaffirm its position as the world’s largest cocoa port.

Port of Amsterdam aims to achieve a considerable expansion in its share of inland shipping and rail cargo to further increase the sustainability of the seaport. This includes a doubling of rail transportation from 5 million tons (2012) to 10 million tons in 2030, through expansion and electrification, for example. Since 2010, the Amsterdam port region has had a direct connection to the Betuwe rail route, the main cargo line between the port of Rotterdam and the German hinterland. A rail shuttle between Amsterdam and Duisburg should create additional possibilities for large companies such as Tata Steel in IJmuiden, Flora Holland and stevedores, enabling them to transport products to German markets and the farthest corners of Europe.

New motorway and tunnel A new tunnel below the North Sea Channel (the ‘second Coen tunnel’) and a new motorway through the port area (‘Westrandweg’) further reinforce Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and the Amsterdam seaports. Both projects were delivered in 2013, relieving pressure on the Amsterdam ring-road and improving connections to the port of Amsterdam, Schiphol and Rotterdam. With around 50 million travellers a year, Schiphol is the fifth largest European airport. It is also the third largest when it comes to cargo transport with approximately 1.5 million tons. The Amsterdam port region is Europe’s fourth seaport with some 98 million tons (2014).

Many Amsterdam terminal operators have expanded or invested in new terminal equipment to improve their performance and become even more competitive compared to other ports. Several advanced cargo handling systems have been adapted to the benefit of companies and clients alike. Among the highlights are the all-weather Waterland Terminal, deep-sea multipurpose terminals and multimodal distribution centres like the VCK Scandia Terminal and Koopman Car Terminal, the dry-bulk terminals OBA and Rietlanden with heavy lift gantries and floating cranes, the expanded tank farms such as Vopak and Oiltanking Amsterdam, and the bustling cruise terminals. The ports of Rotterdam and Amsterdam have jointly developed Portbase, a comprehensive Port Community System that is connected to the customs clearing system, immigration and other authorities. This is a fine example of cooperation between the biggest and the fourth biggest port of Europe - and is part of the port’s motto: ‘Port of Partnerships’.

The ‘A’ Ports The Amsterdam port west of the city consists of the ‘A’ port basins, named after the world’s continents. On the America harbour (‘Amerikahaven’) quays you will find container, liquid and dry bulk terminals. The Africa harbour (‘Afrikahaven’) port basin was completed in 2001 and its size (1,900x350 m with a 15.5 m depth) makes it suitable for tankers, bulk and container carriers. The total area of the site, including green areas, roads and other infrastructure, is more than 300 hectares. Vopak, the world’s largest independent tank storage operator, completed a 35 ha and 1.2 million cbm tank farm on this location in 2013, while the east quay has been reserved for future container handling. The storage capacity of the terminal in the America harbour (‘Amerikahaven’) is approximately 1.6 million m3, divided over 83 tanks with floating roofs varying in size between 4,000 and 61,500 m3. In these tanks Oiltanking Amsterdam stores a wide range of petrol products as well as gasoil, diesel, naphtha and Jet A1. A relatively small activity is the storage of molasses, a viscous by-product of the sugar industry. Oiltanking has seventeen jetties, of which six can dock seagoing vessels with a maximum deadweight tonnage (dwt) of 100,000. OTA in Amsterdam employs nearly one hundred people. The premises of Oiltanking Amsterdam also include a bio-diesel factory owned by Mercuria. In addition, options are available for expanding the terminal itself and on the adjacent grounds.

Two important pipelines Oiltanking Amsterdam is connected to two vital pipelines; an 80-km pipeline that pipes in crude petroleum from various production platforms on the North Sea, and a second 20-km pipeline that connects the terminal to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, one of Europe’s top five airports in terms of passengers and cargo. The latter pipeline supplies nearly 50% of the airport’s total kerosene demand. Additionally, OTA stores part of the strategic oil supply kept by the Dutch government.

Vopak Terminal Amsterdam Westpoort, situated in the Africa harbour (‘Afrikahaven’), has been operational since October 2011. TheA9 terminal comprises 41 above-ground storage tanks and state-of-the-art facilities to blend oil and gasoline components. The tanks range from 10,000 to 50,000 m3. The storage and handling terminal also includes ten berths for seagoing vessels and inland barges on two finger piers, two quays and one dock, all of which are easily accessible via the North Sea Channel.

Amsterdam Westpoort include an advanced A10 vapour return and vapour recovery system (DVI) which processes vapours released during the (un)loading of seagoing vessels and inland barges. Vopak Terminal Westpoort only welcomes tankers at its new terminals that have a vapour return system connection. Moreover, all 41 tanks and pipes above water are equipped with a leakage detection system to minimise emissions from volatile organic substances. The tanks also have an internal floating roof and a fixed dome roof.

Capital investments have been made to ensure that the BAT can operate as best in class. This has resulted in considerable improvements in commercial performance. The BAT storage tanks are part of a constant renovation programme which ensures that they continuously meet the latest standards. Maintenance involves a risk-based inspection programme to determine which tanks are in need of inspection, minimising risk and maximising availability. As a result of investments in the infrastructure, automation system and safety systems at the BAT, the complex currently has the capacity to simultaneously process three seagoing vessels, nine inland vessels and ten trucks, while carrying out eight product transfers at the terminal.

With a view to its environmental commitments, BP Amsterdam has linked its jetties to a modern vapour processing installation. In 2010, the company started large-scale maintenance on its waste-water treatment system. Other activities involve upgrading the tanks, pipes and road network.

For instance, the tank storage company has linked all interconnected tanks and jetties to a modern vapour processing system, which is active even when no vessels are loading or unloading. Since this a completely closed system from which virtually no harmful vapour can escape, the storage tanks do not require floating roofs. NuStar has liquid-proofed any locations from which products can inadvertently be released, such as pumping and loading & unloading bays.

NuStar Terminals continues to invest in new systems to maximise the flexibility of the terminal. For instance, larger pumps to increase flow rates and meters to allow multiple deliveries to vessels from the same tank.

NuStar Terminals is part of American concern NuStar Energy, which owns 84 storage terminals in the US, Canada, Mexico, St Eustatius, the UK and the Netherlands.

Eurotank Amsterdam has invested over 70 million euros in safety, environment and infrastructure over the past six years. The company will continue with these major investments in the coming period as it seeks to expand and improve still further. Eurotank Amsterdam had already built four new storage tanks with a combined capacity of 150,000 m3 in 2009, and four more gasoil tanks with a total capacity of 75,000 m3 were added in mid2011. It is also expanding the capacity of the loading arms on the jetties to expedite the (un) loading of tankers. This investment is expected to increase the transhipment capacity of the terminal by 50% over the coming ten years. Eurotank Amsterdam has also introduced substantial environmental measures since 2008 including the design and construction of a new water treatment system for precipitation

and the construction of two new vapour return systems with a capacity of 2,500 m3 and 5,000 m3 per hour, respectively. Vapour return systems reclaim petrol fumes developed during the loading process of seagoing vessels, trucks and rail tankers to prevent emissions into the atmosphere. A9

In 2006 Eurotank Amsterdam became part of VTTI, an international concern for the storage of energy products. VTTI owns 12 oil storage terminals around the world with a joint storage capacity of more than 8.5 million m3, with Eurotank Amsterdam being the largest.

Hydrocarbon Hotel was designed for the import, export, storage and blending of petrol, diesel, distillates and bio-fuels (bio-ethanol and biodiesel). Its main clients are situated in the Netherlands, Germany and the United Kingdom. The terminal has three quays for seagoing and inland vessels.

The terminal has unique tank foundations that A9 consist of 3800 high-velocity piles (with a length of 23 metres and a diameter of 220 millimetres) that ensure an even load. Additionally, Hydrocarbon Hotel is equipped with a waste water tank and a pumping station.

As a so-called downstream company, Gulf Oil Nederland buys petrol products via long-term contracts with large refineries instead of having its own production capacity.

The new quay accommodates inland vessels (lighters) and seagoing vessels with a draft of up to 11 metres. The storage capacity of the eight storage tanks (with a height and diameter of 22.5 metres) is 60,000 m3. The terminal also includes a loading system for four tanker trucks. In case of a calamity, the fire extinguishing system can provide over 37,500 litres of water a minute. From the Amsterdam port, the tankers supply products to around 400 petrol stations in the Netherlands and several hundred stations in Belgium and Germany. The terminal is supplied with petrol products by means of four lighters. Gulf Oil also intends to start

offering vessel-to-vessel transhipment from seagoing to inland vessels and lighters, including a filter system.

Major clients include coal producers and traders, electricity companies, the steel industry, animal feed companies, the cement industry and the chemicals and paper sectors. Most clients are located in Germany, North-East France, the UK and the Netherlands. OBA has 700,000 m2 of open storage facilities largely within reach of high-capacity stacking installations, 12 km of belt systems, portal reclaimers, ship (spout)loaders and a railcarloader. OBA also has five covered facilities totalling 25,000 m3. These warehouses are within reach of the gantry cranes, enabling direct access with the grabs into the sheds (no conveyor belts involved). The nearby 630 Megawatt coal-fired power station is directly conveyor belt linked.

Bulk carriers with a draft of up to 13.75 metres can proceed directly to the terminals at the Westhaven whereas capesize vessels up to 17.80 metres draft are lightened at the IJ-Palen facility in IJmuiden. OBA has excellent hinterland connections via the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal, which connects the Amsterdam port region to the Rhine and German industrial regions for inland vessels. Furthermore, the terminal has an excellent rail connection via the Betuwe rail-link. Some 17,000 tons are transported by rail on a daily basis.

After starting out as Rietlanden Stevedores, the company has experienced considerable growth since the 1990s: from 700,000 tons in 1996 to 7.2 million tons in 2014. Its storage capacity has increased from 700,000 to around three million tons a year, including 2.65 million tons of coal and 300,000 tons of scrap. Rietlanden Terminals has been part of EDF Trading in London since 2007. For the (un)loading process, the company uses five floating cranes, including four Lemniscate cranes with a capacity of 40 tons and one 50-ton Gottwald crane. Rietlanden can use these cranes anywhere in the North Sea Canal, from the lighter location in IJmuiden to the Amsterdam port. In the America-Asia harbour, Rietlanden has a terminal of 165,000 m2 with a storage capacity

of 750,000 tons, and facilities for crushing, screening, blending, washing and sifting coal. The quay has a length of 1,000 metres. A9 The America harbour location can accommodate capesize bulk carriers with a maximum draft of 15 metres, while the Asia harbour allows vessels with a draft up to 11.5 metres. These facilities can also load two freight trains a day, and have a weighbridge for trucks and goods carriages.

Ninety per cent of the internal transport at the terminalsA10 is by conveyor belt, which limits dust issues. Rietlanden has also made other investments in environmental measures, including a monitoring system with air pollution detectors that measure coal dust, covering the coal with cellulose, spraying transhipment processes and purifying drain and rain water. In addition, the company’s cranes, front loaders and other equipment use low-sulphur fuel. Sustainability is our highest priority, especially lowering energy use.

The Africa harbour is the newest terminal of 300,000 m2 and some 1,150 metres of quay, plus a two-million ton storage capacity, including facilities for blending, screening and iron removal. These Rietlanden facilities also have a loading capacity of five freight trains per 24 hours.

USA has 550 metres of deep water quay (depth 13.5 m) and 300 m quay with a depth of 7 to 11 metres for handling coasters and barges. Gantry cranes are available in addition to two 105 ton mobile multipurpose container cranes. The open storage space amounts to some 250,000 m2 and the terminal has 35,000 m2 of covered warehouse space. USA also offers an in-house empty container depot, Container Service Amsterdam (CSA), which can house up to 20,000 containers over 40,000 m2 and a fumigation and defumigation area for containers.

Oranjewerf Ship Repair Oranjewerf Ship Repair in Amsterdam is active in maintenance, repairs, conversions, lengthening and hull & machinery upgrades. It concentrates on several vessel types such as coasters, tugs, offshore suppliers, dredgers, barges and fishing craft. Oranjewerfâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s facilities include a floating dry dock, a slipway, repair berths and fully equipped workshops. The yard docks vessels up to 135 x 23 x 7 metres with a light weight of about 6,000 tons.

Mobile voyage repair companies are active throughout the entire port region. They provide a round-the-clock service and drive their fully equipped repair trucks alongside ships at their berth.

The nearby railway station Amsterdam Central has frequent train connections to Schiphol Airport more than 50 major international destinations. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol can be reached in 20 minutes by car or 15 minutes by train. The terminal has excellent accessibility and parking facilities for buses and cars. PTA has a total quay length of 600 metres. Two gangways connect the ships with the terminal building, which is a true landmark building in the city centre. Via the concourse, passengers can enter the PTA building (more than 3000 sq. metres of waiting area, escalator and elevators) to the ground floor where buses can park in the roofed bus station. The terminal offers free WiFi for both passengers and crew. Since 2013, when the Piet Hein Buildings were opened, PTA now has an additional 26 bus spaces, a direct escalator and elevator from the second gangway to the ground floor and a crew café. Over the years, the terminal has established an excellent reputation as a port of call and turnaround port. Recently, investments were made for the check-in area and security area in order to guarantee a smooth and safe transition. Ships up to 345 metres have a safe passage to the terminal. The turning basin

behind the ‘Java Eiland’ is 375 metres wide at a depth of 10.50 metres. PTA welcomes some 275,000 passengers on an annual basis and efficiently docks up to 150 ships. The PTA team also offers consultancy to other ports. In cooperation with the other partners in Amsterdam Port Consultants, PTA has advised cities and ports on cruise terminals and logistics.

As the port authority, the Harbourmasterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Division controls both the safety and flow of the shipping traffic in the 30-kilometre long port area, including the IJmuiden outer harbour and sea locks. It operates state-ofthe-art patrol boats. In April 2013 the Port of Amsterdam took two new sustainable patrol boats into service. Both vessels from the Dutch shipbuilder Damen Shipyards feature environmentally-friendly diesel engines and can store spent liquids onboard.

The HAMIS (HArbour Master Information System) control system is of great assistance to all parties involved, providing information and all required shipping data to pilots, customs, immigration authorities and port companies. Developed by the port of Rotterdam in close cooperation with the Port of Amsterdam, it will replace the PONTIS system. Since September 2012 the Harbourmasterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Division operates an advanced shore-based radar system for vessel traffic services along the entire North Sea Canal and port/harbour approach.

Zeehaven IJmuiden NV, the IJmuiden Port Authority, consists of three port basins, serving as a home port for its fresh fishery fleet, while many fishing craft from other Dutch ports and abroad also discharge catches at the IJmuiden fish auction. IJmuiden is also home port to many pelagic fish companies and frozen fish is increasingly imported by reefer or stuffed containers. Inland barges move fish to the hinterland, with instant delivery by truck. One of the quays has been equipped with a number of reefer points and container traffic is building up quickly. An extensive restructuring plan will see the existing port area adapted to the latest requirements of refrigerated cargo handling in the near future. Offshore Offshore oil, gas and wind exploration and production companies in the Dutch sector of the North Sea have chosen IJmuiden as an onshore base for supply and maintenance. The port is also excellent for the construction of offshore wind parks at sea. Industry IJmuiden is home to the largest industry in the Netherlands, the Tata Steel works (subsidiary of the Indian industrial conglomerate Tata). Bulk carriers supply Tata Steel with ore and coal at its own deep sea quays, while steel products are loaded on its export quays. A cement plant is located next to the steel works and a paper mill produces quality paper nearby, with pulp being supplied by bulk carriers as a raw material.

Passenger Shipping Last but not least, IJmuiden is a cruise and ferry port with daily sailings to Newcastle on the North-east coast of England. In 2014 it welcomed over fifty cruise ship calls during the summer season. The development of the IJmond harbour started some fifteen years ago when Zeehaven IJmuiden NV (the IJmuiden Port Authority) realised that many companies were looking for more room to accommodate their growing activities.

The new port area is used for storing sections and parts for wind energy parks under construction in the North Sea. Thanks to its close proximity to the open sea, it is ideally situated for cold-store activities, short sea trade and offshore services.

The IJmond harbour is particulary suitable for offshore projects (including offshore wind parks and drilling platform maintenance) and cruise ships. In recent years the harbour has experienced a complete metamorphosis with the arrival of new businesses such as Airborne Oil & Gas, Eneco, Iskes Towage & Salvage, MHI Vestas Offshore, , and the Felison Cruise Terminal, IJmuiden’s seaside cruise terminal.

Thanks to its sturdy sand bed, the harbour basin is suitable for accommodating heavy drilling, and processing platforms, as well as other raised platforms. Both quays are also suitable for the storage and handling of very heavy loads. To this end, the western quay has two loading platforms made from reinforced concrete and special bed protection. The latter is necessary due to the so-called propeller streams created by large cruise ships. In addition, IJmond harbour has a Ro/Ro bridge for the heaviest RoPax vessels.

IJmond harbour has good hinterland connections and is located just 25 kilometres from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport.

In 2011 owner/operator KVSA (Royal United Ship Agencies) decided to extend its existing ferry terminal in the “IJmondhaven” by building a new cruise terminal, the Felison Cruise Terminal. Simultaneously Zeehaven IJmuiden NV (the IJmuiden Port Authority) took it upon herself to dredge the port entrance, opening the basin for larger cruise ships. Thus Felison Cruise Terminal in the IJmondhaven offers two additional berths of 300 and 320 metres with a depth of 10 metres.

Both Felison Terminal and Felison Cruise Terminal are conveniently located on the seaward side of the locks. The elegant terminals grant time saving access to the dynamic city of Amsterdam, which is only 30 minutes away by car. The two IJmuiden terminal are state of the art, providing a comfortable setting for passengers. Ample parking space is combined with in-house catering facilities, guest information points, escalators and/or elevators, separate crew facilities as well as free Wi-Fi for both crew and passengers.

In 2014 the two terminals catered for 56 cruise ships, welcoming some 85,000 guests. For the 26 turn around calls, KVSA’s own stevedoring department IJCSM, ensures a smooth handling of both passenger luggage as well as ship’s provisions. Since 2014 the Felison Cruise Terminal offers a hydraulically operated mobile gangway, thus granting easy access to and from the ship for all passengers.

The Felison Terminal in IJmuiden primarily caters for the daily DFDS Seaways ferry service to Newcastle (UK). DFDS Seaways has been operating this service for twenty years and its success is reflected in a steady increase in passenger numbers from 70,000 in 1995 to around 570,000 in 2014. In addition, the two ferries King Seaways and Princess Seaways carry some 25,500 freight trailers (trucks) per year and some 100,000 cars and motor vehicles. Ground handling of these vehicles and the general terminal handling is offered by KVSA’s staff. Located at the Haringhaven harbour (‘Haringhaven’), CSY has a container depot with service and maintenance facilities covering some 10,000 m² as well as 150 reefer points. In 2010 and 2011 Zeehaven IJmuiden NV made the area ready for container transhipment. The new, 30-metre wide quays accommodate inland vessels, which pick up containers of frozen fish. CSY IJmuiden is part of the Deep Sea International Frozen Fish Centre (DIFE), the strategic plan to strengthen IJmuiden’s position as a frozen fish hub.

BCA Intermodal, which is also part of the Ter Haak Group, transports the reefer containers on its daily services to deep sea terminals in Amsterdam, Antwerp and Rotterdam, from where shipping lines transport the fish the world over. In 2009 almost 2,500 containers of fish were being transported from IJmuiden by inland vessel, and by 2012 the figure had almost doubled to 4,500. The Ter Haak Group

expects to see the business grow to around 10,000 reefer containers annually over the next few years. Ter Haak’s CBOX Containers also intends to develop CSY as a supply base for offshore containers for the oil and gas industry.

CSY is an initiative by the Amsterdam-based Ter Haak Group and Zeehaven IJmuiden NV, the IJmuiden Port Authority. The CSY partners have close contacts with several leading fisheries companies such as Cornelis Vrolijk, Parlevliet & Van der Plas and cold storage company Kloosterboer. Trawlers unload the fish in IJmuiden where it is stored in the cold storage warehouses, transhipped by means of reefer containers and directly barged from IJmuiden.

MEO handles 300,000 tons of cargo annually, half of which is seed potatoes. Since 2009, MEO has its own container terminal in the Velsen North port. From that terminal the stevedoring company handles containers from inland vessels, from which the loads are intended for its own warehouses. Stuffing of containers with experts goods is also increasing at MEO. Its primary stevedoring activity is handling steel and steel products. Other cargoes handled include timber, cocoa, pulp and starch, and refrigerated products. In recent years MEO has also become a logistic partner of the project cargo sector.

Many food products are prominent in the Zaan area. To maintain and expand the manufacturing- and processing industry in the future, a new expansion site has been prepared along the North Sea Canal in the Westzanerpolder, called the HoogTij industrial area. As an independent non-profit organisation, APC assists ports in developing new operations or upgrading existing facilities. Training and management development facilitate local participants with the required insight, knowledge and skills for a successful operation. APC’s expertise covers all aspects of port development, technical and commercial advice in a wide variety of areas. This includes feasibility studies, maritime safety & port security, master planning, institutional building, port engineering, training & management development, cargo handling operations, communications & navigation, port management & privatisation, project planning & evaluation.

AUT H ORI T I E S & S E RV ICE S Boatmen The port has two boatmen corporations - the Cooperative Association of Boatmen (CVV) in IJmuiden and De Koperen Ploeg, based at the port of Amsterdam. Both provide services for the mooring and un-mooring of vessels in the eastern and the western port areas. Using the same line-handling tenders, provisions are delivered to ships before they are alongside the quay. In addition, the boatmen corporations collect and deliver shipsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; waste to the port reception facility as required by EU regulations. In 2013 CVV expanded its fleet with a catamaran crew tender. The IJmuiden boatman use these tenders to transport parts, supplies and post to vessels anchored some ten nautical miles off the cost of IJmuiden. In addition CVV provides services to the offshore wind turbine parks on the North Sea with tenders transporting the maintenance crew and technicians responsible for repairs and maintenance. Towage Port towage is available to shipping throughout the port area. New heavy-duty tugs with high bollard-pull capacities have recently been added to the modern tug fleets of Svitzer and Iskes Towage & Salvage in response to increased shipping movements. Although the absence of tide and currents makes the port area easily manoeuvrable, tug assistance is always available and especially useful in stormy conditions. New sustainability rules dictate that ships should deliver waste, garbage and sludge to an authorised reception facility. Amsterdam Seaports has such installations, where the ship’s waste is recycled or disposed of in the correct way. The Amsterdam-IJmond region, part of the overall Dutch pilotage (‘Loodswezen’), handles some 13,000 shipping movements a year. The service has developed a highly accurate portable navigation system to guide deep drafting vessels from the North Sea cross point into IJmuiden at the head of the North Sea Canal leading to the Amsterdam port. Helicopters are used to place pilots aboard in bad weather conditions.

As Dutch air and seaports form part of the external borders of the EU, a significant part of the customs activities takes place in the western part of the Netherlands. The Maritime Academy Holland The Maritime Academy Holland is based in IJmuiden, Amsterdam and seven other locations. Established over a century ago, it is one of the oldest and most experienced maritime training institutes in the Netherlands. All eight locations are geared to their specialism, preparing people for all modern functions at sea and on the dock. A wide range of training and education programmes are available, from professional seafarers and fisherman to inland waterway navigation, cargo handling and shipbuilding to maritime technicians. Operators of locks and bridges are also trained and the Academy

participates in various consultancy and research assignments. As the maritime sector is constantly changing and new developments come thick and fast, good staff training is vital for companies in this sector. The Academy’s lecturers and instructors are highly qualified and experienced. In close consultation with its customers, the Maritime Academy Holland organises courses that precisely correspond to companies’ specific needs and are given by instructors

The port area offers 24-hour accessibility, no tidal restrictions and excellent multimodal hinterland connections. The AmsterdamIJmuiden area is well connected by inland shipping, road rail and air connections. Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is only a 15-minute drive away, enabling fast air transport of cargo, emergency supplies, executives and personnel. The region offers assembly and storage sites directly on the coast and along the North Sea Canal. From the pilot station to the Amsterdam terminals, takes 2.5 to 3 hours, including the lock passage. AYOP – A unique network The area’s offshore capabilities and facilities are promoted by Amsterdam IJmuiden Offshore Port (AYOP) – celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Over those 30 years, AYOP has developed into a unique network organization with some 60 members. Its major objective is to provide promotional support to the regional offshore industries and to promote the area. AYOP’s partner list includes oil & gas, offshore wind, port-related and maritime industries, as well as government bodies.

Wind Two offshore wind farms, with an installed capacity of 108 and 120 Megawatt (MW), have already been installed from the port region. From the port of IJmuiden maintenance on these farms is executed. The Luchterduinen wind farm is being orchestrated and serviced from the IJmuiden area. Investments by Vestas MHI are execute the operation and maintenance. In preparation is the assembly and installation of turbines for the near shore wind farm Westermeerwind. For both farms and others, the cable handling, spooling and storage is done in the Amsterdam area. Oil & gas There are over 200 oil production platforms on the Dutch continental shelf. These production platforms need regular maintenance, modification and eventually clean decommissioning. These activities, besides offshore drilling support and supply, are the main areas of expertise. At IJmuiden we have a direct open connection to the North Sea. The port basins have been deepened to thirty feet (ten metres) and supply vessels always have direct access. The cruise industry is going from strength to strength in the Amsterdam port region, with a year-on-year rise in the number of sea cruise ships to the North Sea Canal area. The Amsterdam Cruise Port (ACP) association anticipates a major increase in the number of cruise ships arriving at Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA), the Felison Terminal and the Felison Cruise Terminal, both located in IJmuiden. Of the 126 bookings received for Amsterdam in 2014, some 43 are turnaround calls - cruises beginning and ending in Amsterdam - and 83 are regular cruise calls. The two Felison terminals in IJmuiden received 56 bookings: 26 turnaround calls and 30 regular cruise calls. In partnership with the ACP association, the three terminals in Amsterdam and IJmuiden are looking for new ways to further improve their services to cruise passengers.

About ACP ACP is a non-profit association and all the participants are affiliated with the cruise industry. Several authorities and businesses participate and work together to provide the best possible service to cruise companies. They offer a package of shipping and tourist services in support of cruise calls. Partners include Amsterdam Marketing, the passenger terminals in Amsterdam and IJmuiden, the port authority, port agents, incoming tour operators, various attractions and tourist service providers, hotels, local and provincial authorities.

ACP wishes to be an active network organisation in which all parties work together in an amiable, smart and responsible manner to be able to guarantee an optimal service to its guests.

Amsterdam Cruise Port also coordinates the project River cruise Noord-Holland in cooperation with the Province of NoordHolland and 9 municipalities, which all have invested considerably in their cruise facilities over nine years.
