“My first year or two in the industry had a lot of ups and down and was a really quick learning process for me. There have been times that I questioned whether I wanted to keep going on, but I love it enough that I want to make something of it—and I really want to win.” —Curtis Leschyshyn fourth. So they had two bulls that did real well and I searched for them on the internet and found some videos. I really liked what I saw and that’s why I decided to reach out through an email to the Wilburns. Initially I didn’t get a response, but I didn’t give up. Finally I called and was able to speak with Mr. Wilburn. I was initially only interested in trying to buy Flash, but he wasn’t willing to sell him—so eventually we worked out a deal on a package with Pen Breaker. I was trying to hit a home run basically.” Pen Breaker ended up splitting fourth at the Las Vegas Qualifier and splitting 13 in Vegas. With some initial success Leschyshyn has also quickly learned the value of making the right connections and having the opportunity to talk with industry insiders. “I don’t know why Mr. Wilburn finally decided he would allow me the opportunity to be a partner but I am grateful for it and it was a great

way for me to learn about the business. Just being able to sit and listen to experienced people is the best way to learn and I could have sat there and listened to him for hours. One thing I really like about this industry is anybody I have ever talked to has always been willing to help. They don’t hide anything. If you ask them they give you a straight answer. I just find the people in this industry to be real human beings and wonderful people to be around. It’s been really good for me to just get to meet some of these people and become friends with them.” Leschyshyn recently purchased another partnership on a Squaw Butte son that will buck at the 2012 American Heritage. The prospect is enrolled in the USBBA’s American Breeders Trust and will also be enrolled in the USBBA’s new Super Stakes Incentive Program. Again the internet played a pivotal role in the purchase after an internet video found its way to Leschyshyn.
