Thanks to Those who Step up

I think the concept of “stepping up” is contagious. How often have you seen someone else do a good deed and were then inspired to do one of your own?”
wanted to take the time to thank everyone who has “stepped up” these last 8 months during a transitional period for the ABBI. Russ took over as the interim Executive Director to help run the ABBI and several members of our Board and Shareholders also volunteered to help however needed. Russ has a full time job, owns businesses and has cattle of his own, but he still stepped up as our new Vice President to help the organization set a new course until someone could be hired. Everyone came together to get us through what could have been a very trying time, successfully. We are now on the verge of a new chapter in the ABBI’s history with Dan Meihak stepping into the role of Executive Director in August. I met Dan during the course of our search to fill the position and was also able to visit with him at American Heritage and most recently in Pueblo at our headquarters. He’s a great guy with all the qualifications needed to help ABBI grow and be successful. So I’d also like to offer a big thank you to everyone who was on the search committee and worked tirelessly for months to find the right candidate and then brought Dan to us. I think the concept of “stepping up” is contagious. How often have you seen someone else do a good deed and were then inspired to do one of your own? Every time I’m at an ABBI I see members helping members, whether behind the chutes or hauling for a friend or even just offering some well-earned words of wisdom. Some of our members most willing to step up are our youngest. We have such a great group of juniors this year, I’m continually impressed by their behavior, professionalism behind the chutes, and compassion for each other. They congratulate the winners and help cheer up their buddies whose bulls didn’t do as good as they had hoped.
Last issue, I asked members to step up to support our junior members. Our Editor, Susan Bedford, sent out her personal copies of the last issue of the magazine to E.W. Thomas, someone who had emailed her. It turned out he was an ancestor of Charlie Boulware, whom the bull Charlie Bullware is named after. He loved the article Sugar Kuhn had written about Charlie and was so appreciative for the extra copies to share with other relatives that he donated $250 to the junior program to say “thanks.” I’m going to ask again for members to step up like bucking bull fan E.W. did and help support our kidsthey are the future of this sport. Please contact the office is make a donation. The ABBI staff also stepped up. This year they did more with less (literally, there are fewer staff members than last year) and were willing to take on added responsibilities and seek creative solutions to help ABBI grow. Please thank them for stepping up next time you see them at an event or speak to them on the phone. We are starting to enter the homestretch of the season, with Las Vegas on the horizon. I realize that many times, especially when times get tough, people find it easier to step back than to step up. Please think about stepping up when the opportunity arises and thanks to all of you who already have.

his is my last column as your Interim Executive Director, which is reason to celebrate. While I have been honored to serve in this role, the fact that I must give up that title (and can go back to just being your Vice President) means that our search for a new leader has finally ended! After a long list of qualified candidates and an intensive search, Daniel Meihak has been hired to be ABBI’s Executive Director. I couldn’t be happier with the search committee’s selection. Dan is a great guy who has the knowledge and leadership skills to accomplish great things for us. Even though his background is on the dairy side of the business, Dan was instrumental in the growth and success of Holstein Association USA, Inc. for 11 years where he served as the Executive Director of
Herd Advancement Services. As an association that has been around 128 years and has the world’s largest dairy cattle registry, Dan understands the importance of proven parentage and our DNA registry. Dan will be moving from Vermont to our headquarters in Pueblo soon. His first week in the office will be in August and he is looking forward to meeting our members in person at events or over the phone. Springfield is one of our biggest events each year and if you’re attending, please make sure you take some time to visit with Dan. It is somewhat bittersweet for me to know I won’t be as involved in the day-to-day operation of the ABBI, but my own business, my herd and most importantly my family, needs me and will be happy to have me home in Missouri full-time. I’ve been lucky to work with a great group of people at ABBI and PBR these last eight months and I offer all of them my sincere thanks. Please feel free to reach out to me or any member of the ABBI Board with any questions or suggestions. Although Dan will now be steering the ship, we are all happy to help out our members and listen to their ideas. I’m excited to see what the future holds for the ABBI and am confident turning things over to Dan. I think our future is going to be very bright.

n a recent Saturday, I ran some errands. I stopped by my bank, which has wagon wheel lights in the lobby, cattle heads carved into the tellers’ windows, and black-andwhite photos of local cowboys working their trade over the last century. I then went to the market, where there were plenty of guys in camo picking up ice and snacks for a day of hunting (most likely boar). An old cowboy with muddy boots and spurs politely excused himself with a “ma’am” and a tip of the hat when he realized he was blocking the row I was looking at. I skipped the fishing gear aisle because I didn’t need anything, but if I did need something- they had it.

The market parking lot was full of big trucks with big tires coated with mud. In a grassy corner of the lot there’s a huge statue of a steer roper, its base decorated with local brands, which I always take time to admire. I then swung by the farmer’s market where I picked up some bacon (butchered earlier that morning) and locally grown fruit and veggies. I also got some delicious cheese from a dairy just down the road. Folks were talking about the weather and the high price of hay. On my drive home I passed the local rodeo grounds and, like most weekends, an event was going on. Families filled the stands and little cowpokes played in the dirt, chasing each other and dreaming of the day they’d be big enough to compete themselves. I passed acres and acres of cattle ranch- formerly one of the biggest privately owned operations in America. On the main road (just one lane each direction like the majority of roads in the area), people rode their horses alongside the weekend traffic. I drove past a creek with riverbanks dotted with grazing cattle. I hit the only stoplight there is on my 20 mile drive home. Probably most of you can relate to one or two of the things I experienced that weekend; it may even sound similar to a Saturday you or your neighbors could have. Unless you know me or read my column regularly (and thanks to you who do!), you’d probably never guess I live in the 50th state. That is a typical Saturday for me in my home of Kamuela, Hawaii- cowboy capital of the state (so watch out Stephenville, we might have grander aspirations someday). My point is, all of us in this industry have things in common. Even those of us who seem to live very different lives (in my case halfway across an ocean), probably aren’t so different after all. Even if you live in a high rise in NYC, if you love bulls, you are one us. Our sport is big enough to embrace everyone- new fan or new stock contractor. A great example is Bear Pascoe. If you just watched him on TV you’d assume he was just an NFL player for the Giants. Wrong. The guy loves our sport. And I mean capital L-O2013 Board V-E-S our sport. I was lucky enough of Directors to chat with him in Albuquerque President (where he was attending the Back Brad Boyd Seat Buckers draft) and he told me Vice President he’d be a team roper if he wasn’t a Russ Gant football player. And the thing is, he could be! The guy is that good! He is Treasurer/Secretary Cindy Rosser cowboy to the core. Bear was signing autographs at Jerome Davis Sean Gleason the Rider Relief Fund when I was Jim Haworth introduced to another amazing guy, Cody Lambert Shawn McDermott Koben Puckett. his dad Dan had bulls but I had no idea of the rest of their story- and it is fascinating and inspiring (read more about them in this issue). Both Bear and Koben are ambassadors for our sport. They inspire others by talking about an industry they are so passionate about. If we have taken the time and effort to go to a bucking bull event to watch, work or participate, then that should be enough to unite us. We don’t have to look the same or have the same accent or even be from the same state (or even country) to be part of a bucking bull community that cares about our fellow members and our sport. It’s ok if we don’t all vote, worship or think the same. All that is required is that we respect people’s right to believe what they believe, and appreciate it when they allow us the same courtesy. There is no one “right” way of doing things in this industry. I think as long as you follow the golden rule, have honesty and integrity and are willing to help pick someone up when they fall down- well then, you are all right by me. I hope most of you feel the same way. Our sport will grow by us making everyone feel welcome and by opening our arms to people from different walks of life and letting them come to love bucking bulls as much as we do.
It’s human nature for us to feel most comfortable in a group that is like us. I get that. But I also believe we each have the ability and even the responsibility to be ambassadors for the sport. So talk to people outside the industry about our sport. Let them know they are welcome to come to an event to learn more about ABBI or take them to watch a PBR to be thrilled by the best cowboys in the world. If everyone was the same, life would be incredibly dull. We’d all like the same kind of bulls and breed the same bloodlines- so even our animals would eventually be cookie cutter and boring. Imagine if every cowboy was as talented and had the riding style of Ty Murray circa 1998. Granted, more of our bulls would have a better chance to show what they could do (probably for 8 seconds), but how long would that hold our interest if each ride looked the same? My favorite t-shirt says on it “Surfing Cowgirl.” A more accurate shirt would read “Bucking Bull Enthusiaist and Paddle Boarder” but that shirt probably doesn’t exist. But if I had to define myself, I guess that about sums me up. I’ll step out of my comfort zone (which is essentially bulls or the beach) to talk to strangers on planes, in a store, or just about anywhere about ABBI and PBR. I hope you will do the same and be an ambassador too. Embrace our shared passion, appreciate our unique differences and spread the word about bucking bulls! Aloha, Susan

D&H Futurity and Sale May 3 By Susan Bedford
There is perhaps no other stock contractor that knows as much about winning as Dillon and HD Page. They are also some of the top event producers, thanks to the hard work of Johna Page and the rest of their family. When they put on an event- be it competitive or a sale- people come. Their May Futurity and Sale in Lo-
cust Grove was no exception. The ABBI Futurity paid out over $25,000, with $5,000 added, and Brazos Ham and Chad Dodson’s Coup de Grace won first with an 88.5. Coup is having a strong season and his latest victory was worth over $7,000. Splitting second was Creepin and What a Burger with 86.5 each, worth $3,509.

The Pages also held their annual Yearling Bull Sale at Hardy Murphy Coliseum which featured over 200 bulls raging from yearlings to shortround caliber buckers. This Sale was literally a one-stop shop for anyone looking for a bull to compete in the ABBI or PBR with. While some were looking to add the strength of Page genetics to their herds, others were buying bulls to jump-start their brand with a contender who could be in the winner’s circle.

Big Tex Trailers 3D Futurity Challenge and Derby May 4
Jerome and Tiffany Davis kicked off their annual outstanding Archdale events series on May 4 with the Big Tex Trailers 3D Futurity Challenge. As in previous years, this event used a 3D prize purse system so if you finished at the top of your division, you
took home a check. For example, first through fourth earned checks as did tenth through eleventh and (as the top of the last group) nineteenth place. TB X 10 from Torres Bros finished at the very top, with an 88.5 worth $3,547. In second with 87.25 was Da-

vis Rodeo Ranch/Smith/Fogle’s Whip Lash, he received a check for $2,402. The Jerome Davis Derby saw Bodacious’ son Beaver Creek Beau from Robertson Farms/ Beaver Creek Ranch post an 89 for $2,822. The reserve Derby champion honors went to 62910 from TCB Ranch who scored an 87. CC Riders were used in the Derby. The biggest ABBI east coast event, and a favorite for many breeders, the Big Tex Trailers 3D Futurity Challenge will award a new Big Tex Trailer at the conclusion of the series.

It’s not every day (or even every year) that we get to have an event up north. We were lucky to have an event in Presho, SD for our members who live in that part of the country and we appreciate our other members who traveled to enter and support the Flyin V events. Flyin V put on a great show in conjunction with the PBR TPD that included a Futurity, Junior Futurity, Maturity and Classic. Talli Berger was the junior futurity champion. The Wisconsin cowgirl’s bull 136 took top honors with an 89. In the Maturity, D&H’s Stone
Sober continued his history of winning with a 91.5 worth just under $2,500. The reserve champion was Black Pearl son Buck Wild from C’N Stars with an 88.25. Stone Sober was also entered in the Classic, where his 91.5 earned the Smmoth Move son another $2,793. Second in the Classic was 8 Ball from Fortier/Ramer/Findley with an 88. D& H was also the big winner with an additional $2,872 on the Futurity side of things with their bull 190 earning an 87.75, edging out another Page bull, 105 Y by a half point.

Santa Maria May 30
On May 30, the Santa Maria Elks played host to the annual California event. The Santa Maria Classic and Maturity had nice turnouts and gave some of the west coast genetics a turn to shine, with most of the bulls in the money boasting California bloodlines. 17 bulls were entered in the Classic. It took a 91 to
win, an honor earned by Houdini son Houla Hoop from Humpz & Hornz/Sis ‘N’ Stan. His win was worth $2,350. Cindy Rosser’s Deerango, a Reindeer Son, earned an 88.75 for second and $1,762 for Flying C Livestock. Braveheart (an Oscar’s Velvet son) from Judd Leffew/D-M was scored an 88.75 in the Maturity. This was enough for first and $2,700. Another Leffew bull, Wild Wolf (a Kish’s Wolfman grandson), took second with an 87. The final bull in the money in third came from Humpz N Hornz/Sis ‘N Stan. Super Cool Cat impressed with an 86.75.

ABBI American Heritage presented by Priefert and BootDaddy.com • June 14-15 With just under a half million dollar pay out, no ABBI event except for the World Finals pays out more money than the American Heritage. In one of the most thrilling and nail-biting Futurities in recent years, Jo Blow was out on day one. He posted an 87.75 and his owners Dustin and Lisa Hudson then had to wait over 24 hours to see if he could hang onto the lead. After sitting through the first 90 bulls at Lazy E Arena,they then had to watch another 90 bulls buck Saturday before they knew if they could hang onto the top spot and the Jeff Wolf bronze statue that came along with it, worth $10,000. The Hudsons shared at the event that they considered not evenmaking the last American Heritage entry payment on Jo Blow. He hadn’t impressed the Hudsons the last time they’d bucked him and they thought bringing him to American Heritage might just be a waste of time and money. Luckily, they changed their minds.
In fact, the Hudson family didn’t even make a hotel reservation for a second night- assuming they’d just haul Jo Blow back home to Buda, Texas after he bucked. There was also a memorial race for Dustin’s late sister that they had planned on attending along with family and friends that weekend. The weekend didn’t turn out exactly how the Hudson’s had planned, but every member of the family was ecstatic by Saturday afternoon. Jo Blow was able to hang onto the lead and his victory ultimately brought HDH Ranch over $92,000 and a beautiful bronze. The Hudsons shared the news via cell and, although they were missng their family get together, their family and friends couldn’t have been happier for them. “That’s what I love about ABBI,” said ABBI Vice President Russ Gant, “it only takes one great bull to have a champion. Anyone can win any event, it all comes down to the talent of the animalnot the size of your operation.” The bull, out of Lil’ Red Cat (son of

Red Cat) and Will’s Mistress (daughter of Boding 920-) is one of 45 animals the Hudsons have registered with ABBI, making them one of the smallest breeders to ever win such an important event. The reserve champions were Wild Kitty from 01 Cattle Co./Barthold Cattle Co. and TB 1122 from Torres Bros., both with an 87, and in fourth was Savage Moves from D&H Cattle Co. with an 86.75. Each reserve champ took home a big $42,505. D& H’s Savage Moves took fourth with an 86.75 worth over $23,000 and Splitting fifth were Riley/Teague’s TBB 1173 and Jody Richardson’s BC 145 with 86.5s worth $18,596. The Junior Futurity was held in conjunction with the AH Futurity and paid over $6,155, with some youth members entering both divisions. The big winner was Talli Berger from Wisconsin, whose bull 2B 136 scored an 86.5. It was her second junior victory of the season and she added over $2,000 to her bull’s prize total. Splitting second in the juniors were Arianna Floyd and Aaron Halpain. Floyd 134 and J-Dub each earned $1,292 for scores of 85.75. 23 juniors entered. recaps scored 87.75s from the judges, splitting over $68,000. Right behind them was Dirt Dobber (Boyd/Floyd) with an 87.5 and 94X Oyster Creek (Harrison/ D&H Cattle Co.) with an 87. Over $137,000 was paid out to the 3-yearold bulls. “I thought all of our events were outstanding,” said ABBI President Brad Boyd. “The field of competitors in the Futurity and Derby were both extremely strong. We had over 20 junior members come out to participate in the youth futurity and we also had a youth judging competition. Every member that participated got invaluable experience as to what judges look for when judging a bull and they each got a straw of Carrillo Cartel. Our judging winner Tanner Herr also got a straw of Code Blue.” Tracy Williams (TLW Bucking Bulls) generously donated all of the straws for the juniors. The Derby, held in conjunction with the PBR’s Lucas Oil Touring Pro series, was free to the public on both nights and featured such big name cowboys as Jared Farley, Matt Bohon and Caleb Sanderson. Local cowboy Cody White (Choctaw, Okla.) won the PBR event, with Joseph McConnel (younger brother of PBR star Ryan McConnel) putting on an impressive performance for second.

As a Lifetime Derby and Mega Futurity event, you can bet that our members brought the big guns to Locust Grove presented by Sycamore Springs Ranch. There was over $139,00 on the line so the competition was bound to be fierce. Kasey Hayes/Lee Pedone/Mike White got the biggest paycheck with
Closing Time winning first in the Derby for over $42,000, beating out 49 other bulls. The Last Call son (with Houdini as a grandsire on both sides) wowed the judges with an 88.25. Flying S Bucking Bulls’ MS 074 buttoned up the reserve champion spot with an 88 for over $12,000. Over $84,000 was paid out. The Derby was a “bring-your-own-

rider” event and ABBI put up an extra $3,000 in prize money as incentive for the cowboys. D&H/Buck were first in the Futurity when Finger Roll posted a 90. The Mossy Oak Mudslinger grandson earned almost $15,000 for his impressive perfomance in the field of 55 bulls. Stoltzfus Cattle Co.’s II Amigo had an 89.25 worth over $12,000 in second. Full brother III Amigo also placed in the Top 10. The Futurity Paid out over $55,080.

WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO THE YOUNG, FEMALE MARKET?
O
ver the last several issues I’ve had a lot of great feedback regarding this column. It thrills me to know there is a growing interest in the value and importance of the female side of the industry which has been hit hard over the last several years. Breeders are interested in articles dealing with reproductive services, but even more it seems they are concerned with the issue of the declining young, unproven female market.

What Has Happened to the Young, Female Market?
Over the past 7 years we have witnessed a steady decrease in the value of young and unproven females—in fact I’m often stunned that heifers are bringing less than sale barn prices in public sales and online auctions. The impact of the economy and a severe and lengthy drought has caused many to heavily cull their base herds and in some cases completely disperse of them. Breeders’

Female Factor / what has happened to the young, female market that normally buy young females have also decreased because of the growing realization that it is easier and definitely cheaper in many cases to go buy young bulls with athletic potential, than it is to try and build them through owning and managing their own cows. The first hurdle in having a cow herd beside investment and subsequent cost it that trying to raise bucking bulls is not as easy as previously thought. Enough time has passed and through trial and error the industry as a whole now realizes buckers are darn hard to make. This realization coupled with the fact that a percentage of all calf crops will be heifers, and then that the remaining percentage which are bulls will not all be worthy of the competition format, has transformed the whole scope of the industry. There is much expense in running a cow herd to then be left with such a slim product. This is something many new breeders have realized and also what we are seeing reflected in today’s young heifer market in my opinion. In regards to both heifers and bulls that may be culled from a breeding program, it is also my opinion from conversations with the top breeders that success lies in culling and doing so heartily. Culling may in fact be one of the most important things that a breeder can do to quickly improve his overall herd quality and his subsequent percentages of competition worthy bulls. It may also be one of the most important things that can be done for the breed in its entirety. If this method is followed there will come a time when the young, heifer market may see an upswing because of female quality. Another point that breeders both those selling and buying should keep in mind is that true culls should not be passed onto other programs. True culling to reputable breeders mean individuals should go to the sale barn. Females that are bought and sold into other programs should be of the highest quality in pedigree performance, conformation and breed type. This also helps to improve the industry as a whole, propels the breed overall and if applied, will impact the young, female market in the near future. When it comes to “true” culling and removing substandard individuals from breeding programs, it is also a fact that when applied, most young bulls not only weigh more than heifers usually do, but bulls can also be more easily assimilated into feed lot situations when processed at auction. This being said, bull calves will bring more money than heifers do in a sale barn situation. Anticipation of this has also affected the current young, female market. After culling and quality females have been retained, a prospective buyer faces several challenges with such a female. First is the amount of time that it takes to find out if she is actually a producing female or not. A heifer retained or purchased for breeding needs 2 to 4 years of life before she can be bred, put a calf on the ground and then represent herself through that calf. Not only is time a factor here, but the cost that comes with it. This scenario is then complicated further if her first calf is a heifer. If this is the case it’s then at least another 2 to 4 years

of waiting through her subsequent female offspring. In this scenario both she and her daughter must be retained before a true performance evaluation can legitimately be made. That being said many breeders are not financially able to give a female this lengthy opportunity. When it comes to gender selection, there is no getting around the fact that the current market has dictated that bulls are worth more to a breeder than heifers are whether looking at sale prices or what is marketable within our industry. Still, without females we have no future prolific dams and some sort of balance must be struck.
Have Popular Breeding Practices Affected the Young, Female Market?
Breeding practices like flushing, embryo transfer and IVF procedures with proven producing females makes young, unproven females even less necessary. Offspring can be multiplied from a single proven source as opposed to via multiple unproven young, females. In this case, a breeder has a better idea of what he is producing as opposed to taking chances with unproven females. With the realization that bulls are more valuable to a breeder in the present, services like gender selection through semen additives and semen sexing technologies have also gained steam. If a breeder knows he can’t get what he’s got into a heifer back out of her, gender selection becomes tempting to help him meet his bottom line. At this point I must confess that I am a true proponent of flushing and IVF, and have myself dabbled in some gender selection technologies for all the reason just discussed. Gender selection can increase selection intensity of dams, no doubt, and can also help propel breeders financially.

These methods also maximize the impact that our industry’s most prolific dams and sires can have on the history of our breed. Still, all actions have consequences and I have begun to ponder the possible price of all these survival techniques. What if everyone decided to live in only the now and start using these techniques on only proven dams, AND did so with only “Y” sex-sorted semen to increase the number of bull calves they’d have to pick through each year all in an attempt to navigate the market waters? I’ve done a lot of thinking on this after having so many people ask me my thoughts on it all. While the young, female market may be weak currently, I think there will come a time in the near future where there may not be enough upcoming females to meet the industry’s demand for young, prospect bulls. First off, if people aren’t keeping females or making females and our proven dams age-out on us where will we get the next generation of bull calves from?

What Will Be The Next Industry Trend Be?
There is no definite when trying to figure out the next market trend, but if the above scenario approaches, the industry may then be facing yet another problem besides not enough females—an overload of rider aged bulls! While the number of futurity events is ever increasing, we are all aware of the problem that is already the elephant in the room when it comes to 3 and 4-year-old bull competitions. There just aren’t enough riders! So how long will it take to go from a lackluster young, female market to an over flux of rider bulls and back to a solid young, female market? That remains uncertain, but the best way to soften the effect of these trends on the breeder is clearly through balance. Balance in program decisions can prevent violent swings in markets of any kind that rely on supply and demand and our industry is no different. I truly believe breeders should cull hard, but then retaining

specific females when they can. I think in the not so distant future the tide will turn and solid-base, young females of high quality will once again be demanded. And these demands will reap rewards for the faithful. I also truly believe that the industry should brace for a very likely declining rider-bull market. If we look far enough into the future and assess our current situations we may be able to soften this blow. As a whole the industry could be brain storming heavily on other rider options for our 3 and 4-yearolds. The answer may be partially in other competition options that revolve around rider dummies or in fostering and cultivating bull riders. Either way, an effort now will make the future better. All these ideas are complex and many intangible, but they are surely worth thinking on. We have worked hard at making bulls a business so we must start utilizing business methods and models to circumvent the negative. I know this business is full of savvy, intelligent people that can

understand and apply these things for the benefit of the industry as a whole. And in the meantime, consider finding your young, exceptional heifers a place in this world even if it’s in your already overloaded program. It may pay off in the not so distant future and you could be handsomely rewarded for your faithfulness to being a lover of female factor at its finest.

I
t takes an exceptional person to come up with an exceptional device like the CC Rider and the CC Stealth. And its creator Larry Gardner is nothing short of exceptional himself. Not only is he a breeder and bull owner himself but he may be one of the most creative people in the industry. Gardner’s creativity spans further than that of the CC Rider and the CC Stealth. When the craftsmanship of his dummies is inspected it’s no wonder that he is also such an amazingly talented and successful artist. “I’m real particular about things being perfect—I’m an artist,” confessed Gardner. “I’ve always been able to paint, draw, sculpt—do anything artistically. But I’m a perfectionist and I like things to be done right. I enjoy a challenge and solving a problem or making something perfect. I don’t want to copy anyone’s work and like to make my work original and one of a kind. I like to keep working at something until there is absolutely nothing I can do that will make it any better.” All dummies aside, Gardner’s creative perfectionism can be found in an amazing project he is currently working on. It is a sculpture for a group of Native American fire fighters also called “hotshots”. The masterpiece weighs in at some 2,700 pounds, has an eagle with an 11’ wing span and over 300 feathers on each wing of the eagle just for starters. It features a hotshot that is also a warrior and the two are tied together by nothing more than the fire fighters ax. And although the piece is still in production, one look at Gardner’s progress on the project reveals the painstaking effort he is willing to perform. Bull owners that love Gardner’s creativity with bucking dummies have also sought him out for his creative talents in art. In fact Gardner carved a bucking bull with a hatchet out of a pine knot for Tom Teague that is more than impressive. It is this sort of passion and talent that makes Gardner capable of building the best dummies in the industry. Gardner has always loved bucking bulls and grew up around cattle and rodeo. Even though he takes bulls to touring pros, fooling with young bulls is something he’s particularly fond of. And just as he strives for perfection and the best he’s capable of in other pursuits, his bucking bull aspirations are no exception. “I started with a few cows and I’m up to about a hundred head of them now. I probably have a bull or two that could go to the PBR, but I’m waiting ‘til I find a really good Bushwacker caliber bull— and I may never find one, but that’s what I’m striving for.” Along the way Gardner faced the same challenges all breeders and owners face— how to handle bucking bulls with riders. The concerns are unlimited and liability is one that many worry about. Gardner’s concerns were no different and his method of problem solving for this task turned into something quite special for the whole industry. “When I first got into the bucking bull business I didn’t want to put riders on my bulls at my house because of the probability of riders or bullfighters getting hurt and the liability that goes with that. So I decided I was going to build myself a rider that I could use to get around the issue of liability. A lot of people laughed at me at first, but I was determined.” Gardner’s determination is evident and the CC Rider product you see today is many hours and much sweat atop Gardner’s original efforts. He spent immeasurable time building and testing and re-building and re-testing. From start to present, Gardner put in over 6 years of effort. During this process his biggest hurdle was that of durability. Bulls can make short work out of the toughest of items so creating a dummy that was human like yet could stand up to the punishment of a bucker was tedious and time consuming. “My first dummy didn’t have a base, but it had a mannequin head. I got it all fixed up and the very first bull I put it on tore it all up. So I just kept working on it for another year and when I was ready I went to Dillon Page with it. And again in about only 15 minutes we had the arm ripped off of it. So I went back to work again on it for about another year. When I thought I had it about right we bucked it out on a bull at the PBR event in Dallas.”

While I was working on it I was also working on a patent and each time I changed it I had to change the patent. And each time I changed the patent it cost more money. So after about 3 more years of working on it I finally thought I had it figured out and got it to where it would start moving more like a cowboy. I build it so it wouldn’t keep tearing apart because when I built it I was really building it for myself initially.” Gardner called Page and asked to bring the dummy over to try it again, but not before some serious testing was done with his own bulls—and through some other very creative methods. “I told Dillon that I thought I finally had it figured out and that I wanted to bring him (the CC Rider) over and try him out. But before I did I went and threw him out of the back of my truck on my road and drug him with a rope at about 40 miles an hour. Then I took him and laid him down in the bottom of my chute and ran all of the bulls over the top of him. Anything and everything I could think of to try and tear him up. After that and he was still in one piece I was satisfied and ready so I brought him over to Dillon’s to try on about 40 head.”

Gardner sent out four more of these dummies to Cliff Wiggins, Brad Boyd, Carl Wilburn, and Scott Accamazzo with strict instructions to “buck the fire out of them” to see if they’d hold up. After about three weeks he went and rounded them up so he could see how the dummies had faired. “I picked up the dummies and tore them back apart to see what kind of damage was done. I didn’t really see any damage to them, but I went ahead and made a few changes to them at that time.” Over time Page claims to have put around 4,000 trips on his dummy and those who have used the dummy seem very impressed. Not only can they avoid liability issues but they can buck as many bulls as they want at one time without fail or the dreaded quick buck off. “Everybody that has one really seems to like them. I have sold them to 5 or 6 different guys. What guys tell me is the best about him is that you can put him on as many times and as many bulls that you want to and you don’t have to have any clowns, nobody gets hurt and you can sit back and enjoy bucking your bulls. I’m excited that they have used him at J.W. Hart’s event a few weeks ago and also at Jerome Davis’ bull event and he seems to have worked out well for everyone.”

While Gardner confesses that he realizes his dummy can be costly, the effort and workmanship that go into each dummy is much more than impressive. In fact the Kevlar shirt on one model costs more than 300 dollars alone and besides dual latches, aluminum construction and a fully functioning artificial cowboy that rides with either hand, Gardner’s service and quality guarantee on each dummy he builds is nothing short of superb. “I know they are expensive, but they are not cheaply made and I have made it to the best of my ability. Anytime I see something that needs to be changed I change it and make it better. They are durable and any time anybody has any problems they can send it back to me and I will fix it and get it right back to them—and if I can’t fix it I will replace it. I’ve tried to address anything that could possibly go wrong with these dummies. But as I go anything I come across or see that will make it better I modify.” An example of Gardner’s guarantee came when Gary Long’s CC Rider had a problem with an internal clamp breaking. The clamp originally not manufactured by Gardner held the entire dummy together internally. After this issue he began to make the part himself. “When Gary had this problem I just sent him a new one before I got his back. And then I began making this part myself to make it better. That’s what I like to do. Improve things every way they can be improved.” Besides the other benefits that the CC Rider has, its durability lends itself to more than longevity. By being durable the dummy is also flexible. This flexibility makes the dummy all the more safe for the bull. When a bull steps

on the dummy it has enough give to prevent most injury. “When I built the rider’s upper body from the box up, there is nothing in there that can hurt a bull or nothing that can puncture or cut a bull in anyway. The pad and the wide girth are all made with the bull’s comfort and safety in mind. There is no pinching with this design and you can’t over cinch a bull to the point of discomfort. I don’t want any of my bulls hurt and I certainly don’t want anybody else’s bulls hurt by something that I have made.” While Gardner was perfecting the CC Rider and visiting with Dillon and H.D., the topic of injuries was definitely discussed and the duo were so impressed with the dummy that they inquired about a dummy that was just a box for the younger calves. This ultimately led to the CC Stealth’s birth. “They talked about all the broken legs they were having and about how the edges of the box hit the bulls and about how the bulls get hurt when they step on the dummies. So then I went and built the stealth with the dual action release. Most of the others have gone to the dual action release also, but where mine differs is that each release is completely separate from each other so there is no chance of hang up. If one side’s mechanism fails you have the other side on a completely separate system. Batteries, remotes and latches are all independent from each other to prevent malfunction.” Gardner’s passion flows through all that he does. Whether it is creating a one of a kind art piece for a group of fire fighters or building a dummy for bulls with every single detail for safety addressed, his dedication and compassion are wide reaching. “I do all this because I do not want to see a bull ruined or hurt. Also the box itself with the rounded corners is all aluminum and all of the screws are recessed so there is absolutely nothing on it that they can step on or get injured on.” With all of these features and perfections Gardner feels that the dummies prices are reflective of the amount of effort, care and perfectionism he has put into them to benefit and protect both people and bulls. When this is considered, each dummy is almost a work of art in itself. “Each CC Rider dummy takes 40 hours of labor to build. The way I build them they are hard to put together. I make sure and I double check, I take my time and I do it all myself. You have one shot to make things right the first time and I do my very best to get it right. Sometimes I don’t sleep at night because I’m thinking about what I am going to be building the next day. I’m that passionate about what I do.”

BORN TO BE A BULL RIDER Koben and Dan Puckett: 3 Triangle Bucking Bulls
K
oben Puckett was born to be a bull rider. His first words? “Baw Bull” (bucking bull). “I live and breath bulls,” the 24-year-old stated as a matter of fact. “Bulls are just in his blood. Even as a little kid he played with imaginary bulls. For awhile he had an invisible one that we even had to hold doors open for and feed!” related his dad Dan. “His middle name should have been ‘bull’. As a kid, it was all he ever read or talked about.” As the saying goes, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Growing up Dan decided to try his hand at rodeo when his older brother Dean first showed an interest in the sport. Their dad William didn’t know what they were up to for awhile. They’d get on milk pen cows and hop on calves at brandings. Even though it wasn’t his background, “Bill” ultimately liked the challenge of rodeo for his sons. Eventually Dan was entering events like “Little Fellers Rodeo” and a few Junior rodeos every summer until his senior year where he competed at New Mexico High School rodeos. He started going to amateur rodeos with his brother the summer after graduation, Unfortunately he got injured and did not ride bulls his first year in college. Summer came and he jumped in with Dean again to rodeo and, from that time on, Dan was hooked on bull riding. He went back to college where he rode for two years and after that, Dan turned pro and eventually qualified for the 1988 Dodge Circuit Finals by being the 1987 Turquoise Circuit Champion. “My dad rode bulls and I went to bull ridings with him when I was little bitty and when I was about 9 or 10, I started riding steers,” Koben recalled. Growing up, Koben’s family lived on his grandpa’s ranch in New Mexico until he was 7. His father Dan worked with Papa Bob (his father-in-law) on the ranch for a decade. It was a rural lifestyle with no tv. But they did have plenty of rodeo videos for the VCR and Dan noticed that Koben was

fascinated by the bucking bulls. One of Koben’s favorite childhood games involved bucking all over the bed mimicking a bull. By age 10 Koben was getting on steers and obviously very dedicated to what would be his future career. Koben’s talent as a bull rider was obvious to Dan and everyone else who saw him ride. Koben joined the PBR when he turned 18.
3 TRIANGLE BUCKING BULLS TAKES SHAPE
In a story that sounds somewhat reminiscent of the winningest stock contractors of all time(the Pages), a dedicated father bought some bucking bulls so his son would have animals to practice on- and started a whole new chapter in their lives. When Koben started riding steers and roping at junior rodeos, the Pucketts bought some bull calves at the sale barn for Koben to rope. When they got too big to rope, Koben practiced his riding on them. Papa Bob had a Brangus herd when a neighbor’s rodeo bull decided to visit the ladies. Papa Bob’s Brangus herd wound up with two bull calves and a heifer out of that bull that he gave to Koben. “I remember getting those three paints from Grandpa,” he related. The cow wasn’t so good but one bull was great. As a 3-year-old, Double Ought did well in a Futurity that was for 3, 4 and 5-year-old bulls, placing in the Top 10. He then went on to buck at the PBR World Finals in 2004 and 2005, making a name for the Pucketts’ program, 3 Triangle Bucking Bulls. The next significant step in their herd were two heifers they bought from Lyndal Hurst. Those heifers and Double Ought daughters out of some other cows would be the foundation for their modern-day herd. That Double Ought bloodline would produce their current best bucker- Juke Box Hero.

As a stock contractor, to have a bull at the World Finals was unbelievable.” Both Koben and Dan are aware that getting your bull invited to the World Finals is an experience that may never happen again, but they are certainly working toward that goal. At the 2004 Finals Michael Gaffney, Mike White and Guilherme Marchi all faced Double Ought. LJ Jenkins and Wiley Petersen matched up against him in Vegas in 2005. Cowboys liked Double Ought and all these superstar cowboys posted a score on him at the event where it mattered most, the highest being White with an 87. But 3 Triangle Bulls isn’t just about Koben and Dan and it isn’t just about breeding bulls. 3 Triangle is now putting on open bull ridings around their home in Canyon, Texas. Koben’s goal is to be able to put on a PBR TPD in Amarillo someday. And when they put on events or are traveling on the road, the whole family helps with the herd. “When I’m gone, my wife Vana feeds. At events that Koben produces, she also works the gate and concession stand,” Dan explained. Daughter Payson just graduated high school and although she supports the family business, her passion is swimming. Dan isn’t surprised his wife is so hands-on. A barrel racer who has always supported her husband’s love for bucking bulls (and then her son’s), Dan recalled one time that he wanted to get on a practice bull before a rodeo. “Vana pulled my rope, tightened the flank, opened the gate and then videoed the ride. “It was a really good ride,” remembered Dan. “Unfortunately it got videotaped over later on by the rodeo ride.” If you never met Koben in person and only spoke with him on the phone, your impression of him would be exactly as it should be- a former bull rider, smart young stock contractor and event promoter on the rise. If I hadn’t met him in New Mexico earlier this year, this next part of the story never would have been written because it’s probably not something Koben would’ve told me because it wouldn’t have occurred to him to talk about anything but his bulls.

Koben is defined by bulls and his involvement with them, but on September 6, 2008 he had an accident that changed the trajectory of his passion and his herd.
A DIFFERENT PATH
Koben was at a PBR TPD in Mesquite, Texas when he was thrown from the bull near the eight-second mark. The fall broke his neck (a C5-6 fracture) The bull then stepped on Koben, fracturing his lower back, puncturing a lung and breaking ribs. Koben’s dream of making the PBR World Finals as a cowboy came to an end. He was having an outstanding season at the time of his accident with over $25,000 won and four rides in the 90s. The entire family focused on helping Koben rehabilitate. He spent time in California at a rehab facility and then underwent an experimental stem cell surgery overseas in 2011. He also spent six months in Austin in physical therapy where Vana and Dan took turns staying with him. Koben then was moved home and continued his rehabilitation with an intensive exercise and therapy program. Koben is now able to use his own stem cells (withdrawn from his own body and then injected below the injury site) to aid in his recovery. Since the state of Texas has now legalized this procedure, he no longer has to travel abroad for the treatment. “My recovery went uphill after my injury, then plateaued. So I pursued this,” explained Koben. Celling Bioscience, the company who provides equipment to Koben for the stem cell treatments, are fans of 3 Triangle’s bucking bulls and the PBR. They have even partnered on a bull with the Pucketts. “Their sponsorship means that I am able to travel to events. That means a lot to me.” Koben has gotten more movement in his arms and hands than doctors expected and he hopes to walk again someday. The Pucketts are a family of faith and prayer has helped them all deal with some of the difficulties of the last five years. One of those difficult times was in 2010 when they decided to disperse their herd. Koben’s buddy LJ Jenkins had stepped up when Koben got injured and helped out with the bucking herd. When things

feature / born to be a bull rider quieted down after the initial hospital and rehab, Dan and Koben realized they would have a very difficult time caring for a herd themselves. “We tried to do a local sale and it just didn’t work well,” recalled Dan. They ended up with a few animals left which turned out to be a blessing in disguise. “Koben always made breeding decisions with our program. Now that we were very small again we pretty much had to start over and Koben is making all the breeding decisions. Luckily it turned out what we had left was pretty good and a good base to start over.” Jenkins had helped out with the bucking herd postaccident and he let them use a bull to breed the cows to, and later pastured some cows at his place in Oklahoma for them. They also met a man in December of 2006 who purchased half-interest in a coming 2-year-old son of Double Ought that went onto win a little money at futurities and derbys and bucked at the PBR World Finals in 2009. “David Prewitt helped us out a lot by pasturing and training some bulls after Koben was injured,” Dan explained.
FAITH IN THE FUTURE
Jenkins’ bull Eight Ball (a Houdini son) bred with Pucketts’ Double Ought daughter Red Gert. The resulting bull calf was Juke Box Hero who most recently bucked at the BFTS in Albuquerque and in Las Vegas. He was out twice at the Ty Murray Invitational. The first night he was ridden by Joao Ricardo Vieira for 86.25 pts, and in the last round bucked off Marchi. He was hauled by Gene Owen to the Last Cowboy Standing Event and ridden by Billy Robinson for an 87.75. “ Celling Bioscience Juke Box Hero has been a real blessing for us,” explained Koben. ‘”It’s great to be at BFTS events again with a bull.” Dan works a full-time job at Nutrition Plus LLP, a company that he and a few friends started back in 2003, supplying Livestock mineral and other supplements to cattle, sheep, goat, and horse operations. Koben dedicates his time to the breeding, managing and marketing of their bull program, as well as producing and promoting events. Now they just have about nine cows, but all have bloodlines they are really pleased with. This year’s calf crop resulted with only two bull calves, one out of City Lights and one out of Juke Box Hero. “Even if we always had to keep our herd small,” stated Koben. “That would be ok. It is what I love. I could never be out of this industry.” Koben also has plans to use bloodlines from bulls he had success on, like adding some Hot Damn genetics into the mix. He has already done some breeding with Bo Davis’ 82 Blueberry Buckle and has heifers out of him with calves by their side. In 2008 prior to his injury, Koben was 92 points on Blueberry Buckle and 91 points on Hot Diggity Damn (son of Hot Damn).

“I’m the chore boy right now. Koben goes out in his wheelchair but he can’t open a gate just yet. He manages everything. He does market some of our cattle and semen through Facebook and The Breeders Connection, he keeps track of events and calls Cody Lambert when he needs to. Someday he can take it all over and I’ll just go fishing,” chuckled Dan, “No, not really, I will always be involved.” After Koben’s accident, Rider Relief Fund stepped up to help. They helped with therapy costs and some of the huge hospital bills. Dan and Koben work with RRF’s Lynn Dahnke and Clay Learned and help out whenever they can, including working the RRF booth at this year’s Albuquerque BFTS event. “Rider Relief Find is such a good cause and has been a big help to us,” said Dan emotionally. “We haven’t given back near what we want to yet.” 3 Triangle Bucking Bulls has been through highs and lows, experiencing life-altering events that have helped to put things in perspective. One thing that has been unwavering is Dan and Koben’s shared passion for bucking bulls. “The ultimate dream is to expand with land and have a bigger herd, we just lease some grass right now. Our goal right now is to keep real good bloodlines,” shared Dan. “And maybe have a few bulls at the PBR World Finals one day.” Dan also sees Back Seat Buckers as being a crucial tool for himself and other small operations. “We really hope BSB keeps going well. For small breeders, that’s a great opportunity to get your bloodlines out there and attract people to your breeding program.” Added Koben, “Selling bulls to BSB is a great way for a small guy to market his program to the industry.” Their most recent calf crop was heavy on the females, but father and son are hoping that they’ll be able to sell some bull calves to BSB in the future. “My short term goal is to have one of our bulls on tour consistently,” Koben said. “I’d like to have at least one per year. “When Double Ought went to the PBR World Finals in 2005 and I got to watch the Pages accept PBR Stock Contractor of the Year,” related Koben, “my dad and I thought that’d be so cool to earn that award someday. I’d have to recover more and be able to do more on my own first, so if I had to have a long term 15-year goal maybe that would be it.” Koben paused, reflecting on the ideas he had as a 15-year-old in Las Vegas. “But young men dream big. I guess I still do. My number one goal now is to stand on the back of bucking chute again and flank a bull.”

A
fter the excitement of new owners choosing their bulls and watching them grow and learn, I can hardly wait to see these young bulls in action. Many of our owners have already taken advantage of visiting their bulls at bull housing. If you haven’t been, I urge you to make the trip to Texas. The Fun Buck event was a hit, and will hopefully become a standing occasion. While the event didn’t count for the season, Big Wahala won a free spot in the 2014 Back Seat Buckers program for his owners Findley/Smiley/Bioko Buckers. It was nice to offer a time to visit the facility when members could be guaranteed to run into fellow members. There are some fun-filled weekends planned for August in Tulsa/Locust Grove, and Thackerville. The Locust Grove Furturity
opens the season, complete with a BBQ and entertainment after the first futurity of the season. This year, we also are provide exclusive activities for our members to enjoy. The Tulsa excursion will be a tour of the Gilcrease Museum, one of the country’s best facilities for the preservation and study of American art and history. During the weekend of the Thackerville furturity, we’ve arranged a private tour of D&H Cattle Co., one of the top Bucking Bull Ranches of the PBR. I
t’s hard to imagine anyone having bought a spot in this year’s Back Seat Buckers program before Sharon Asti-Caranci and her brother Mark Asti, who bought a spot in the 2013 auction before the first of five BSB events last fall. And then, on the eve of the auction, the Colorado native decided on a second bull, which her brother wasn’t initially interested in. However, like most everything else in their lives – they co-own a real estate company in Boulder, where Sharon lives – wound up partners on both bulls. The two bulls – Papa Louie and Luigi Too, who got second place at the “Fun Buck” back in April – are named after their grandfather Luigi Asti, who emigrated from Italy along with his wife Mary when they were in their early 20s. They came to the U.S. from the small village of Comporaghena. “It’s a beautiful village up on a mountain,” said Sharon, who visited back in 2000 and along with her brother decided to name their newfound venture Ghena’s Bucking Bulls. “It’s like really old country.” Sharon and Mark grew up in a small town of Superior, Colo., located outside of Boulder, where their father was the Mayor for 30 years. As kids they were involved in the local 4H and had sheep, rabbits and ducks. Their grandparents had cattle and in exchange for helping brand cows and later moving them from their summer pasture to their winter pasture, the kids would each receive a young calf.

This is their first foray with bucking bulls. Sharon said that she and brother are longtime PBR fans. Both play the PBR fantasy game online and while neither has won, Sharon said she tends to do better at selecting bulls than riders. In addition to being a PBR Posse member, she’s also a member of the ABBI and subscribes to American Bucking Bull Magazine. They travel out to Las Vegas every October for the World Finals every year and in past years they’ve regularly attended Colorado events for the Built Ford Tough Series, Touring Pro Division and the ABBI. Sharon and Mark plan attend all four BSB events beginning in Tulsa, Okla. “I got interested and thought, ‘I want to own a bull,’” said Sharon, who after talking about it for years, but never pursuing it, got interested in BSB. She followed it closely last year and even watched it live on the Internet.

I
t took more than a decade for IZOD IndyCar Series driver Tony Kanaan to win the Indianapolis 500, but it took no time at all for the Brazilian native to partner with Randy Bernard and Apex-Brasil in getting involved with the ABBI’s successful Back Seat Buckers program. Kanaan, who said three-time PBR World Champion Adriano Moraes is a hero, has followed bull riding since the earliest PBR events 20 years ago, when, in 1994, Moraes became the first champion in PBR history. Kanaan now has three bulls of his own to track this season. The 38 year old Kanaan shares a sponsorship with Apex-Brasil and it was Silvia Pierson who organized a partnership between herself, Kika Garcia-Concheso, Bernard and Kanaan. Bernard, a former CEO of both PBR and IndyCar, is currently the CEO of RFD-TV. They own a pair of 2-year-old Back Seat Buckers named Downforce and Brazilian Bully. Both bulls will compete at the first of four events in Tulsa, Okla., which culminates at the World Finals in Las Vegas. “Man, this is great,” Kanaan recent said, when talking about his involvement with the PBR. In addition to the pair of Back Seat Buckers, who will be competing at the BOK Center, Kanaan will also be tracking the Built Ford Tough Series events. He’s partner with three-time Stock Contractor of the Year Jeff Robinson on another bull. The aptly renamed TK500 (formerly known as Mud Wasp) is a twotime World Finals qualifier and will be competing in one of the long rounds that weekend. Kanaan has said he plans to be in Las Vegas for the Back Seat Buckers finale.

yndi and Steve Gilbert, co-owners of Diamond “G” Ranches and Rodeo Company located in southern Utah, take great pride in breeding bucking bulls. Cyndi is extremely involved in managing their bucking bull breeding program. The Gilberts have lived on their ranch in Toquerville since 1990. They own other ranches in the area where they manage their livestock operation, facilitating the natural breeding and calving of their bucking bulls.

The inception of the breeding program started after they purchased #183 “Ricky” from Sammy Andrews at the National Finals Rodeo in 1989. They then purchased a herd of F4 heifers from Texas which became their “dam” foundation. Thereafter they added additional heifers that had the confirmation that fit the dream of their ultimate breeding program. From the start, Cyndi was fascinated with the genetics of her animals. Over the years, she has kept accurate and detailed records of the breeding combinations. Based on those records, the Gilberts tweaked what sire went with what dam and waited to watch the results. No matter how a new breeder starts, it takes about 10 years to see success in any breeding program. The same was been true for Diamond G. Initially, the bulls went to the PRCA rodeos and Cyndi, by chance, flanked baby bulls at their ranch and not only loved it, but found a talent in flanking. She enjoys the zone of being “one with the animal.” Her interest continued to grow. Cyndi wanted to figure out how she could help her animals get better not only in breeding, but through her flanking. She pays attention to their surroundings. She watches how her bulls react to different settings (i.e. heat, humidity, lighting, cowboys, the arena, etc.). Cyndi watches closely to determine if an animal might perform better in a different delivery (lead Whirlygig II at 2013 PBR Event with Zack Brown (Sire: Whirlygig; Dam: -48, a Mr. USA daughter)
preference or the tendency to be “hipped” by the gate) or needs a slow or fast gate. She finds using a “pull flank” to be the most effective to get the ultimate performance from her bulls. Cyndi’s opinion is that records and pedigrees are not necessarily what make a good bucking bull. Because a bull is amazing at bucking his cowboy off or earning him a check, doesn’t necessarily mean he will make a good sire. In fact, as many stock contractors will attest, dams are probably MORE important than sires. Her advice would be that if you can find a good breeding combination, continue it. Start with a few dams and a good sire and increase your herd as your success increases. Not all dams and sires will produce bucking bulls! Not even if the sire is a world champion. The Gilberts became members of the ABBI in 2001. Cyndi has flanked in the PRCA since 1996 (winning more than a dozen gold buckles with her bulls at the NFR) and in the PBR since 2005 (including 7 PBR Finals). Most recently, she shared with Back Seat Buckers owners her flanking technique at a special luncheon in Las Vegas. With more than 17 years “behind the chutes,” she hopes the glass ceiling for women might be a little easier to break for the women who follow her. You get to see these bulls buck prior to selection and we will buck again shortly after the draft while the new owners are still in Las Vegas. Our first goal is to see the bucking bull industry continue to thrive, and to thrive we all must find each potential bucking bull enthusiast strategic “comfort zone” when it comes to purchasing bucking bulls whether that is buying from EG or buying into another program. Finally our third goal is to identify if you are better to raise them and sell EG bulls, buy them from us or buy them from another EG breeder that is better suited for you! Futurity bulls mature and peak at different times. All breeders hope this happens when big money is on the line. The Jaynes Gang recently held an Underdog Championship for bulls who scoredless than 85 points at any EG Champions Tour event. Hou’s Jacket, owned by Bob Whisnant of Columbus, Texas, a son of LittleYellow Jacket out of the great producing cow Kay Hou, not only won the Underdog but collected the events gold cup with an impressive score of 87. Talk about peaking and maturing at the right time…Hou’s Jacket went from an entrenched underdog to a 2013 Million Dollar Bucking Bull Championship contender going into the August Preliminary Round in Breckenridge, Colorado.
Jerry Hargis joins the Exclusive Genetics and Jaynes Gang Teams Billy Jaynes, CEO of Exclusive Genetics and The Jaynes Gang announced that that Jerry Hargis will step into the newly created role of Director of Operations effective July 15th. Hargis will be responsible for all ranch operations including oversight over training and event management, overall ranch management and bull barn supervision. Hargis was born into the bucking bull business and has been a highly respected and major force for many years. Jerry has both trained and bred, through Hargis Ranch bulls, ABBI, NBBA, UBBI, PBR and PRCA champions and standouts including El Presidente, Palm Springs, Blueberry Wine, Grasshopper, Strawberry Wine and Neon Nights just to name a few. Jerry has coupled his success in the bucking bull industry with equal achievement as an Industrial Engineer in business. He recently worked as the Area Coordinator for Environmental Drilling Solutions. He graduated from Tarleton State University with a BS in Industrial Engineering Technology. Hargis will be relocating to Hungerford, Texas with his wife Carol and young son Pace.

You do not have to be a BIG BREEDER to get in on the Breeder Certification Opportunity! Bob Whisnant of Columbus, Texas has been a loyal customer of Exclusive Genetics for many years. Bob plays both the Million Dollar Bucking Bull game as well as entering Open Bucking Bull Futurities. He is succeeding on both ends this season. Bob’s great open two year old open futurity bull Firpo is always at the top of the leader board when he competes and has been a solid partner when he is joined with two other great bulls, Tuve and Cardinal at team competitions. Recently at Exclusive Genetics Buck Day and BBQ Whisnant’s 2013 Million Dollar bull Hou’s Jacket (featured on the left) had a breakthrough event wining the Underdog Championship with a score of 87. With that win Hou’s Jacket quickly established himself as a major contender to win the $500,000 first place payout. Bob also owns a small interest in another 2013Million Dollarcontender named Pull My Finger. He is partnered with Grayson Swalin and majority partner Gina Issac. With his current success Bob is very satisfied but feels that he can gain even greater pleasure by participating in the EG Breeder Certification program and working to create his own ranch bred $500,000 winner. Bob purchased 5 Single Horn Breeder Certification certificates. The EG Breeder Certification program, where you can choose and create your own genetics is right up Whisnant’s alley. Whisnant says, “I have around 35 cows, many well-bred daughters of Houdini and Little Yellow Jacket. I also have Firpo’s mama. I think my cows are capable of creating Million Dollar winners. On the bull side I have Hotel Hou and Bust it Up, a nice son of Jason’s Pet that came out of Fred Robinson’s great breeding program that has produced some really nice bulls.” Whisnant’s calves will be born in the spring of 2014. Bob will then be in the tough position of choosing the top 5 bulls to certify who will compete in the 2016 race for the Million Dollar Bucking Bull Championship. What will Whisnant’s strategy be for selecting his EG certified bulls? Bob commented, “For my first pick I would definitely find a nice looking son of Bust it Up out of a Houdini cow. Pick 2 would be a calf from Firpo’s mama. After that I’ll have to look over my calf crop for a few more nice ones. Even though bull calves must be certified before 3 months of age, one of the great things about the EG program is you get to see your calf crop before you select the bulls to be certified.” Whisnant is looking forward to his experience with Breeder Certifications. “The certification program is really a groundbreaking concept. I can do my own thing, with my own cows and bulls and try my hand at creating the genetics needed to win the Million Dollar Bucking Bull Championship. I know this is going to give me a great deal of pleasure.” Whisnant’s parting comment might also be his best, “Anyone can buy a winner, but the greatest satisfaction will come from raising your own.”

TOM SELMAN’S BIG WEEKEND
Tom Selman of Selman and Sons Bucking Bulls makes MILLION DOLLAR ANNOUNCEMENT with Mitch Terrell and then wins $25,000 with the Bull Arm Yourself Tom Selman made a major announcement on Saturday, May 25th to the large crowd assembled in Orchard, Texas for the Jaynes Gang/Exclusive Genetics 2013 Buck Day and BBQ. The Midland, Texas bull owner entered the arena with the legendary breeder and trainer Mitch Terrell to inform the crowd that he just signed an agreement to be a major part of the Exclusive Genetics Breeders Certification program. Selman purchased 50 certifications making him, along with The Jaynes Gang, the only Triple Horn Certification owners for their 2014 calf crop. There are several other breeders that have purchased Breeder Certifications but only Selman & Sons and The Jaynes Gang have Triple Horn certified bulls. The program also feature Single and Double Horn certifications. Tom Selman owns the great bull Dagger who in 2011 during the first Million Dollar Bucking Bull Championship finished second and collected a check for $100,000. Tom’s partner in the bull, through their then Saber Bucking Bulls, asked Mitch Terrell to train Dagger. Since then Tom has looked for an opportunity to work with Mitch again. Tom said in the arena, “I felt like I owe Mitch for the experience he gave me with my first big win. I have considered him a partner, not just a trainer, ever since. I never realized it would be on this level but now our partnership is huge!” Terrell is one of the most admired and respected members of the bucking bull industry. He was the first to own Houdini and initially hauled him to events. Interestingly Mitch owned High Voltage who was the sire of Wildfire who sired the 2011 Million Dollar Bull Champion OMG. Closing Time who won the 2012 MDBBC, and is tearing it up in Derby events is packed with Houdini genetics. So the first two winners of the MDBBC have genetics that trace back to Terrell’s foundation herd. Selman will use the 50 certifications to breed to Terrell’s cow herd. In 2014 all of Terrell’s calves will be part of Selman’s operation to sell 2016 Million Dollar Bucking Bull’s. Terrell has always had success selling his calf crop, but none in 2014 will be on the open market, they will all go to Selman. When Breeders Certifications have been sold each purchaser has had a different vision on what their business model would be. Selman has developed an innovative plan. Recently Selman purchased a horse racing ranch. He is currently redesigning the spread to accommodate his growing bucking bull business. Tom is constructing a 300’ x 175’ covered arena and restaurant. He will hold several events for his customers, set his sights on hosting a Champions Tour and create a business model that will reach out to potential customers in the Midland area to learn more about the bucking bull industry. Selman feels the best way, and only way, to go into the Breeders Certification program is to go big. By purchasing 50 certifications he immediacy positioned himself to become part of the elite Triple Horn program. This will give Selman the opportunity to get the best value on the purchase of each certification and allow his owners the opportunity to double their winner’s payout at two Champions Tour events and double their money up to $100,000 at the 2016 MDBBC!! Selman’s announcement was followed up on Sunday with a big victory for Selman and Sons. Their son of Mossy Oak Mudslinger, Arm Yourself, scored high mark of 3.188, on a 1-4 scoring system, to collect a payout of $25,000 by winning the 2013 Buck Day and BBQ Incentive Championship. It’s a long way to the 2014 MBDDC, but Arm Yourself has established himself as the early favorite to beat.

How is the amount of prize money awarded each year determined?
An ABBI bull has a competition career for three years in the Futurity and Classic programs. Based on that fact, the total money awarded in any year is determined by the amount of bull calf nominations in their birth year and then a percentage will be used for each year of competition. The $25/head is split up between sire, dam and calf. As a calf is nominated $15 goes into the calf payout, $5 goes into the dam payout and $5 goes into the sire payout.

Depending on whether we are talking about growing bulls, mature bulls, dry cows or wet cows; their requirements are all different and must be addressed to maximize their potential. In this article, I will address hay quality, interpreting a hay analysis and guidelines for making a hay buying decision. Hay Quality depends a lot on your

The two nutrients that best indicate quality, as it pertains to the bucking bull industry are protein and relative feed value or RFV. Nutrition / Hay quality for everyday use. Most grass hay runs between 6 and 13 percent protein with the exception of prairie hay, which rarely runs more than 6 percent protein. Alfalfa hay will vary more widely in protein content than grass hay ranging from 13-23 percent protein. With this said one can see the importance in hay testing and getting a hay analysis report to understand exactly what is being feed in terms of hay. Relative feed value (RVF) is the best indicator of fiber digestibility in hay. The digestibility of fiber plays a huge role in managing the size and volume of the rumen, which is important with competition bulls. In our quest to keep bucking bulls tight-gutted, we have to be keenly aware of the quality of hay we are feeding. If you have ever heard anyone talk about “rate of passage”; it simply refers to the time it takes for hay and feed to move through the digestive tract. By Sugar Kuhn Knowing the exact quality of the hay you are feeding is a sure way to dial in any feed program. Hay or forage sampling and testing is a simple and inexpensive process that can produce a mountain of knowledge about your individual feed program. There are various types of hay probes that are used for taking hay samples. The most important part of taking samples is to be sure to get a varied range of core samples from random bales. Go to several different representative areas or bales and take a core sample with a hay probe and put each core sample into a zip lock bag. Combine all core samples into the same bag and mix them thoroughly. After the sample has been mixed, tightly seal the sample bag and press out any air before sending it to your lab for testing. A good representative sample should fill a quart zip lock bag. Test results should take about 7-14 days depending on your lab. When results are available, have them forwarded to both yourself and to your nutritionist for review. A good nutritionist should be able to explain your test result and also make suggestions on how to integrate what you have learned into your program for maximum results. Photos by Sugar Kuhn

Although there are many types of manual hay probes, most commercial probes can be attached to a drill for taking samples. This type of probe has a convenient hub to place a zip lock bag around for hay core collection.
Use a rod to empty the hay probe into a zip lock bag after core sample is taken. Continue random sampling and collection until a quart sized zip lock bag is full.
After samples are collected, tightly seal bag pressing out air and send to your selected lab for testing.

(RFV) of 65 or over in grass hay is best for bucking bull prospects and/or competitors. Anything lower and you will have a tougher time keeping them tight-gutted. Typically, as protein increases or decreases, so will the relative feed value (RFV). A hay test is the most efficient way of determining hay quality. The following is an example of a comprehensive analysis by Martindale Feed Mill, a popular certified lab. As you can see, the analysis is broken up into categories; Protein, Fiber, Minerals, Energy, and Quality. The results are quoted as “as received” basis, and “100% dry matter” basis. This analysis of a hay sample is of Bermuda grass and it is a good example of high quality grass hay. The protein is 12.3% and the RFV (relative feed value) is 73.1. Hay is the best example of the statement; “if you don’t measure it you can’t manage it”. I want to talk a little bit about the cow herd and how it is affected by hay quality. Many times the cow herd gets the poorest quality hay. Dry cows will get along better with poor quality hay simply because their requirements for protein and energy are nearly half of that of wet cows. When a cow freshens, the quality of hay plays a big role in meeting her requirements which nearly doubles as she freshens. Remember at this stage a cow is producing milk, maintaining her body condition, and preparing to breed back. If you bale your own hay and conditions are not perfect, and you have to feed what you have, I understand that. A hay analysis simply gives you the tools to manage around hay that is not ideal. Managing around poor quality hay can be done with supplemental protein and energy. But keep in mind that doing so typically costs more and is less efficient than simply feeding quality hay. In summary, an accurate hay analysis is simply another tool to help you fine-tune your bucking bull program. In today’s competitive environment, it’s the little things that you do leading up to competition that can make the difference between a check and being just out of the money.
