Adventures in Round Brown Episode 5.8

The Round Scarf

Plain and Simple I love “Do It Yourself.” I love seeing something amazing on someone asking them where its from and hearing “I made it!” This is what Episode 5.8 is all about. My mom taught my sister and I to use a sewing machine at an early age(just the basics and a few crafty techniques). The only bad thing about a Sewing Machine in the Microwave Age, is that there is no way to whip something up in just minutes (at least this is true at my experience level). My sister and I were famous for breaking out a pair of scissors and safety pins and going to work when we needed an instant fashion boost. I once made an off the shoulder poncho hook-up out of one of my mothers fabric shower curtains that she found from the 70’s. I can re-adjust seams, move a button, and belt unruly pieces to work a miracle and I will rock it till it can be rocked no further! In Episode 5 you were introduced to this piece with the Monif C red halter swimsuit. I call it the Round Scarf. I remember having one of these as a kid and you could wear it with a coat that didn’t have a hood . Then towards the end of ’08, American Apparel came out with a version called the Circle Scarf . It is a long piece of fabric that is a big circle, along with the scarf they give you a “How to wear it guide” . So while I love American Apparel their color choices did not excite me and I thought I could make my own. I had already seen an oversized scarf at H&M that I wanted so I went and bought two, and courtesy of Maude(my friend C’s Sewing Machine)-I went to work… and these are the Round Brown Results!

Inspiration I usually get in a “Do it Yourself mood when I feel like my rendition could spice up the fun a little bit. I am inspired specifically by the convenience of this piece. Living in Cali on most days you can bet on beautiful weather, but there are days when its cool or attempting to rain at best. With this piece I can pull it up like a hood, wrap it tight or loose around the body. I can belt it or play with just the fabric, but there is always an option. On those days when I just can seem to sit still this scarf lends happy to my creativity!
