Why Did The Wicked Witch Get That Way? Wicked tells a revised version of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. In this version, the Wicked Witch of the West, named Elphaba, isn’t really so wicked. Rather, she’s trying to help the talking animals of Oz, whom the Wizard is persecuting. In her travels, her sister Nessa is killed by a house falling on her. The girl in the house, Dorothy Gale of Kansas, is sent by the Wizard to kill the Elphaba, but really wishes to apologize for killing her sister. In a fit of grief, Elphaba sets herself on fire, and Dorothy throws a bucket of water on her to try and save her, but melts her instead.
