Payments PHOTOGRAPH EXHIBITION The Interschool Harmony Group, which AZC founded in 2003, held its Photograph Exhibition at the Kingsgrove Community Hall on Wednesday, 26 October. The six participating schools entered 20 exhibits that resulted from a Moran Prizes photography day that was conducted at each school and involved Year 5 and selected students.

What was very obvious from the exhibition is the talent students have with a digital camera in their hand. More photos from the Exhibition are on the next page. MOBILE PHONES Students who bring a mobile phone or other electronic device to College must leave it at the Main Office when they arrive. The item can be collected on their departure. If the device is required for use in the classroom, then the teacher will advise the Main Office.

Parents are reminded that all payments should be made by direct deposit, Bpay or through the EFTPOS facility at AZC. The reason for this procedure is twofold: - AZC does not want to handle or hold cash on the premises; and - AZC wants to minimise any bank charges for parents who are withdrawing cash from ATMs to make a fees payment. AZC appreciates your cooperation in this matter. PAGE 2

EID AL ADHA AZC will close on Eid Al Adha which is expected to fall on Monday, 7 November. INTERSCHOOL SPORT Term 4 interschool sport is tball. Both teams have started the competition well with two good wins against Rissalah and Arkana. MATHS @AZC During Term 4, half of the Primary staff are involved in an intensive maths professional learning program. This program involved all Primary staff in an overview of the program on on SDD in October. During Term 4, our facilitator will visit classrooms and observe teaching and learning practices and then conduct a two-hour workshop with the group. The other half of the Primary team will be involved in the same PL activities in 2011. MAJOR BUILDING WORKS Well, the scaffolding has gone and the new multipurpose hall and secondary block is really taking shape. The secondary block incorporates science laboratories, technology and design rooms, as well as other specialist rooms for music, visual arts and hospitality. There will also be approximately 6 general learning areas in addition to the specialist rooms. We can’t wait for the start of the 2012 academic year to use these new facilities! JUNIOR AFL IN 2012 The boys have enjoyed dabbling in AFL during the winter months at AZC. Dr Darvall will be investigating the level of interest for boys to play as an AFL school team in the winter months of 2012 on a Sunday in Under 8, 10 and 12 teams. Initial discussions will be held with NSW AFL Development Officers on 31 October. An expression of interest note will be sent home with boys following this meeting. VOLUME 14, ISSUE 9: OCTOBER 2011!

OCTOBER 2011

NUT FREE ZONE Mohamed Soummaka, who is in Kindergarten in 2011, has a severe nut allergy. To prevent a medical emergency, there can be no nuts or foods containing nuts in the school. This includes, especially Nutella and hazelnut products, and anything containing tree nuts. Al Zahra College and the Soummaka family appreciate your assistance in making our College a nut free zone. Thank you in advance for your complete support.

COLLEGE UNIFORM Parents are reminded that they must purchase available uniform items from AZC and missing/out-of-stock items from Yeronga School Uniforms (900 Canterbury Rd, Roselands). There is concern that some families are substituting College uniform items by purchasing items from unapproved suppliers. Specific concerns are boys’ trousers, school shirts, AZC caps and tracksuit pants. Parents can save themselves a lot of money by ensuring their child’s name is marked clearly on all pieces of clothing. PAGE 4
