Payments Parents are reminded that all payments should be made by direct deposit, Bpay or through the EFTPOS facility at AZC. The reason for this procedure is twofold: - AZC does not want to handle or hold cash on the premises; and - AZC wants to minimise any bank charges for parents who are withdrawing cash from ATMs to make a fees payment. AZC appreciates your cooperation in this matter. PAGE 2

Drama Club Last year at Al Zahra College, Miss Sadruddin came up with a fabulous idea to start a drama club. The first play that took place was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in which I played the main part which was Charlie. It was a great success. In 2012, the teachers decided two have two drama clubs, a junior and a senior club. This was all due to the popularity and interest that evolved from last year. Drama is a great way to show off students’ confidence and talent and let me tell you something. Al Zahra College has a lot of talented children. The junior drama club meet every Thursday at lunchtime to brainstorm ideas together for the upcoming annual performance. We also act out some scripts with different expressions involved. It’s full of great entertainment and a whole heap of fun. This year the junior drama club is doing a production of the Gruffalo. It’s sure to be brilliant.

NUT FREE ZONE Mohamed Soummaka, who is in Year 1 in 2012, has a severe nut allergy. To prevent a medical emergency, there can be no nuts or foods containing nuts in the school. This includes, especially Nutella and hazelnut products, and anything containing tree nuts. Al Zahra College and the Soummaka family appreciate your assistance in making our College a nut free zone. Thank you in advance for your complete support.

COLLEGE UNIFORM Parents are reminded that they must purchase available uniform items from AZC and missing/out-of-stock items from Yeronga School Uniforms (900 Canterbury Rd, Roselands). There is concern that some families are substituting College uniform items by purchasing items from unapproved suppliers. Specific concerns are boys’ trousers, school shirts, AZC caps and tracksuit pants. Parents can save themselves a lot of money by ensuring their child’s name is marked clearly on all pieces of clothing. PAGE 4

ASTRO AHMAD’S AMAZING FACTS On the 13th of June 2012 NASA launched a black hole hunter into space. This new telescope, called Nustar, will be used to find and study one of the most amazing and mysterious objects in space. BLACK HOLES!

could ever happen, but let’s imagine you fell in feet first. The gravitational pull on your feet would be stronger than that on your head, because of the small distance between them, causing your body to be stretched out like a piece of bubble gum. This process is called “spaghettification” or the noodle effect. In other words, you'd be turned into spaghetti.

Black holes are fascinating objects because they have such powerful gravity that they pull in everything in their path. Not even light can escape from them, that is why they are invisible. So if they are invisible, then how do we know they exist??? So how is a black hole formed? One way a black hole is formed is when a large star, about ten times the size of our sun, grows old and dies. When the core of such a star runs out of fuel to burn, it will explode into something called a supernova. The left over material from the explosion collapses into itself and becomes a black hole. This We know they exist because type of black hole is called a when a black hole pulls in Stella-mass black hole. matter [solids, liquids and gases], radiation is released and Scientists also believe there is a this helps astronomers find the black hole in the center of most black hole using special x-ray galaxies, including the Milky telescopes. has a mass equal to about 4 million suns [mass is the amount of matter or “stuff” in an object]. Can Earth be gobbled up by Sagittarius A? Never fear, the super massive black hole in the centre of our galaxy is too far from our solar system so it can't pull us in. Also, our sun is not big enough to turn into a black hole when it dies, therefore, our Earth is safe from black holes. However, asteroids on the other hand, well, that's a different story! Until next time, this is Astro Ahmad taking you to infinity and beyond.... The International Baccalaureate

PYP Authorization

The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who will help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

On December 22nd 2011, AZC was officially authorized as an IB world school for the Primary Years Programme. IB authorization means that AZC has fulfilled the requirements for program implementation including curriculum and policy development. The requirements for authorization are the same in each IB region with the process designed to ensure that schools are well prepared to implement the programme successfully.

To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programs of international education and rigorous assessment. IB programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right The most significant and distinctive feature of the IB Primary Years Program is the six transdisciplinary themes.

VOLUME 15, ISSUE 5: JUNE 2012"

AZC is a Candidate MYP School and an Interested Diploma Programme School. By 31 March 2012, AZC will submit an application for an authorisation visit in Semester 1 2013. If successful, AZC will then offer the Diploma Programme as the AZC school exit credential from 2014 with our first Y12 graduates in 2015. AZC is proud to be an IB World School.
