Payments HISTORY x 2 Ali Hamdan is off to the Combined Independent Schools (CIS) State Athletics Championships on 22 September. Ali created AZC history last year by being the first AZC student to reach the state athletics championships. In 2011, Ali creates history again by being the first AZC student to reach state championships on two occasions. Well done, Ali.

AZC BLAZERS Students must wear college blazers to and from AZC in Terms 2 and 3. READY TO LEARN It is absolutely essential that students arrive at school, ready to learn. This won’t happen if students do not have adequate sleep (10-12 hours, depending on age) or have unhealthy eating habits. If parents don’t have these two factors right, then learning and personal achievement will be a ‘hit or miss’ affair.

Parents are reminded that all payments should be made by direct deposit, Bpay or through the EFTPOS facility at AZC. The reason for this procedure is twofold: - AZC does not want to handle or hold cash on the premises; and - AZC wants to minimise any bank charges for parents who are withdrawing cash from ATMs to make a fees payment. AZC TEAM AT ASISSA ATHLETICS CARNIVAL – 25 AUGUST, 2011 The following athletes represented AZC at the 2011 ASISSA Athletics Carnival that was held at the E S Marks Field on Thursday, 25 August. All students performed well and were successful in their heats. AZC entered a relay team (Junior Boys) and they came second in their heat with a great performance. Star of the day was Ali Hamdan who just missed out on racing in the 200m at State by 0.04 seconds. Well done, team! You made us feel very proud of your efforts.

NUT FREE ZONE Mohamed Soummaka, who is in Kindergarten in 2011, has a severe nut allergy. To prevent a medical emergency, there can be no nuts or foods containing nuts in the school. This includes, especially Nutella and hazelnut products, and anything containing tree nuts. Al Zahra College and the Soummaka family appreciate your assistance in making our College a nut free zone. Thank you in advance for your complete support.

COLLEGE UNIFORM Parents are reminded that they must purchase available uniform items from AZC and missing/out-of-stock items from Yeronga School Uniforms (900 Canterbury Rd, Roselands). There is concern that some families are substituting College uniform items by purchasing items from unapproved suppliers. Specific concerns are boys’ trousers, school shirts, AZC caps and tracksuit pants. Year%3%Science%Fair% Dictionary Work Matter - The substance of which things are made. Definition The world we live in is made from matter. Matter includes anything that has mass and takes up space. Our bodies, the air we breathe and the water we drink are all examples of matter. The different types of matter that we use to make things from are called materials. What? How? Why? Year 3 worked in their research groups to decide which materials they would change, how they would change them and why they would change them.

States of Matter Gases, liquids and solids are all made up of microscopic particles, but the behaviours of these particles differ in the three phases. The following figure illustrates the microscopic differences.

Note that: •

Particles in a: o gas are well separated with no regular arrangement. o liquid are close together with no regular arrangement. o solid are tightly packed, usually in a regular pattern. Particles in a: o gas vibrate and move freely at high speeds. o liquid vibrate, move about, and slide past each other. o solid vibrate (jiggle) but generally do not move from place to place.

Liquids and solids are often referred to as condensed phases because the particles are very close together. The following table summarizes properties of gases, liquids, and solids and identifies the microscopic behaviour responsible for each property.

Central Idea: Understanding the way materials behave and interact determines how people use them. Group 1 Medina Abdul-Menhem, Shahiba Kalam, Reda Ali Group 1 changed wax from a solid to a liquid by lighting a candle. They dripped the wax onto cardboard and created some interesting artwork. They used mixed media to finish it off. (Reversible Change)

Group 2 Ahmad Sabra, Hussein Soummaka, Alaa Mehdi Group 2 changed an egg from soft to hard by boiling it in water mixed with blue, food colouring. They wanted to change the colour of the egg and then eat it. (Irreversible Change)

Group 3 Abbas Alawieh, Hasan Al Gharib, Tia Mohsen Group 3 changed chocolate from hard to soft by using steam to melt it. They dipped strawberries into the chocolate for a lovely dessert. (Reversible Change)

Group 4 Hassan Makki, Mohamed Darwish, Sophie Shanaz Group 4 changed flour to play dough by adding salt, water, food colouring and glitter. They then used cooking cutters to make interesting shapes. (Irreversible Change)

Group 5 Rida Saif, Mohammad Kaywan, Mohammad Mourtada Group 5 changed cordial from a liquid to a solid by freezing it in ice-block moulds. They then ate the ice-blocks for a snack.

Group 6 Hussein Salim, Ahmad Reda, Aya Nasrallah Group 6 changed popcorn seeds by heating them in a saucepan with a little oil. They ate the popcorn with chicken salt for a snack. (Irreversible Change)

Group 7 Ali Jomaa, Noureddine Bahamad, Mariam Mustapha Group 7 changed milk by adding Milo chocolate powder. They noticed that the consistency of the milk changed. They enjoyed a lovely drink. (Irreversible Change)

Group 8 Farah Haidar, Ismail Hammoud Group 8 changed youghurt powder to a liquid by adding water and then to yoghurt by putting it in the fridge. They ate the youghurt. (Irreversible Change)

Group 9 Mohamed Balaghe, Noor Salameh, Abbas Al Ali Group 9 changed water by adding salt to it. They wanted to float a toy boat on the water. (Reversible Change)

Group 10 Khalil Youssef, Eman Alnajar, Mohamed Youssef Group 10 changed ice-cream from a solid to a liquid by melting it at room temperature. They poured the ice-cream on a muffin and ate it. (Reversible Change)

RE: TAX DEDUCTION SCHOOL UNIFORMS The Education Tax Refund (ETR) provides valuable help by assisting parents and cares with expenses such as computers, stationery and textbooks. The ETR has extended the cost of school uniform expenses.
