AHMAD SABRA Ahmad Sabra (Y4) is our latest sporting champ by representing AZC at the CIS NSW Swimming Championships in March.
READY TO LEARN It is absolutely essential that students arrive at school, ready to learn. This won’t happen if students do not have adequate sleep (10-12 hours, depending on age) or have unhealthy eating habits. If parents don’t have these two factors right, then learning and personal achievement will be a ‘hit or miss’ affair.
Ahmad created AZC history by this special achievement as he is our first representative to compete at state level in swimming. Even more impressive, Ahmad swam in the How much sleep do your two hardest events: butterfly and children have each night? the individual medley. Well done, Ahmad! MOBILE PHONES Students who bring a mobile phone or other electronic device to College must leave it at the Main Office when they arrive. The item can be collected on their departure. If the device is required for use in the classroom, then the teacher will advise the Main Office.
INTERSCHOOL SPORT AZC were the Term 1 interschool champions in netball (girls) and AFL (boys). Our girls were undefeated during the competition and won the final 2-1 in a close and tight final against AIA. Similarly, our boys were undefeated during the competition and defeated Green Valley 11-11(77) - 1-2 (8) in the final. Congratulations players.

Payments Parents are reminded that all payments should be made by direct deposit, Bpay or through the EFTPOS facility at AZC. The reason for this procedure is twofold: - AZC does not want to handle or hold cash on the premises; and - AZC wants to minimise any bank charges for parents who are withdrawing cash from ATMs to make a fees payment. 2012 ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
Hensley Athletic Field at Mascot was the venue for our
2012 Athletics Carnival. Its recent refurbishment and upgrade has resulted in an outstanding facility for Botany Council. As well, it was a beautiful sunny and hot day. 33 records were set or broken on the day with Fatima Hammoud (Y7) and Ali Hamdan (Y5) being the outstanding athletes on the day, winning their respective Champion of Champion events. Mrs Nagi broke Mrs Youssef’s record in the Ladies Open 100m event. Other outstanding performances were witnessed from: • Muhammad Hamdan (8y Boys 100/200m) • Bilal Chahine (10y Boys 100/200m) • Fatima Bachir (14y Girls 100/200m) • Rayanne Khalife (15y Girls 100/200m) • Mohammad Jomaa (Intermediate Boys 800m) • Jawad Tanana (11y Boys 800m) • Rayanne Makki (Intermediate Girls 800m) • Zeinab Hammoud (Senior Girls 800m) The only disappointing aspect of the day was the interference by some parents in the running of the carnival. Two reported incidents were: • ribbons being taken off children by parents who thought someone else had won them; and • relay teams being changed by parents after they had been established by House Captains. The irony of this issue is that the fastest girl in the school was replaced by a parent who ran slower. Changes will be made in 2013 so that students must pre-enter events prior to the carnival to avoid this interference.

NUT FREE ZONE Mohamed Soummaka, who is in Kindergarten in 2011, has a severe nut allergy. To prevent a medical emergency, there can be no nuts or foods containing nuts in the school. This includes, especially Nutella and hazelnut products, and anything containing tree nuts. Al Zahra College and the Soummaka family appreciate your assistance in making our College a nut free zone. Thank you in advance for your complete support.
COLLEGE UNIFORM Parents are reminded that they must purchase available uniform items from AZC and missing/out-of-stock items from Yeronga School Uniforms (900 Canterbury Rd, Roselands). There is concern that some families are substituting College uniform items by purchasing items from unapproved suppliers. Specific concerns are boys’ trousers, school shirts, AZC caps and tracksuit pants. Parents can save themselves a lot of money by ensuring their child’s name is marked clearly on all pieces of clothing. PAGE 3

RE: TAX DEDUCTION SCHOOL UNIFORMS The Education Tax Refund (ETR) provides valuable help by assisting parents and cares with expenses such as computers, stationery and textbooks. The ETR has extended the cost of school uniform expenses. From the 1st July 2011 the extension will cover expenditure on uniforms which are required or otherwise Approved by a School including sports or physical education uniforms. The new eligible items would be available for expenses incurred during the 2011-12 financial year the tax refund would be allocated in the 2012 – 2013 financial year A tax invoice listing individual items purchased at the point of sale will be provided; should your community require further clarification please contact your financial advisor
