PARENTS’ HANDBOOK
Our Background
Al Zahra College is an independent school that commenced in February 1998 to provide alternative education options for the growing Muslim community in Australia. The College presently caters for students from Preschool to Year 8 (with an additional secondary year group planned each year). The Preschool and Primary sections are coeducational, while the secondary class is for girls. The College motto Faith, Knowledge and Wisdom promotes in all students' endeavours, excellence and quality learning in all areas of the curriculum, as well as within the Islamic faith, with
particular attention to instilling high moral values in each student. Al Zahra College is a Candidate PYP (Primary Years Program) school and a Candidate MYP (Middle Years Program) school. While AZC adopts both IB (International Baccalaureate) programs, the College still addresses the standards and requirements set by the NSW Board of Studies in all Key Learning Areas. Additionally, Arabic language, Islamic and Quranic studies are offered to students. The inclusion of our ethos and values in the school’s teaching programs provides all students with an opportunity to cooperate and work together in a
harmonious and collaborative environment, and to understand and appreciate the common ideals of the Islamic faith in a spirit of tolerance and understanding. Al Zahra College provides a learning environment in which each student is able to develop an understanding and respect for his or her own cultural background and take pride in who he or she is. Consequently, the ability for students to respect other cultures is strengthened. Islam, by its very essence, is multicultural and Al Zahra College seeks to imbue all students with high moral values and respect for all people.

HOMEWORK Each class will establish a weekly homework schedule that will commence each Monday (or first school day of the week) and must be fully completed and submitted by the last day of the school week. The homework must be marked. Homework will require a minimum of 30 minutes at home and comprise activities that are selfexplanatory, consolidate class lessons and require minimal parent support. However, parents will be required to monitor their child’s daily home reading requirements. Homework will include at least: • a daily reading requirement; • drill practice in ‘tables and combinations’ according to their level of ability; or • spelling list activities. Parents are strongly encouraged to actively participate and supervise their child’s studies each night. They are advised to look at their child’s completed work as well as listening to Reading, Spelling and Tables practice. Parent’s signature on written work will allow teachers to know whether the student’s parent has seen the work or not. Teachers should be aware that the goals for homework and study should include: • Extending the regular school program and reinforcing what has been learned. • Providing additional learning time or drills. • Broadening horizons for the students and providing opportunities for gaining new ideas through exposure to more sources of information. • Developing within the student the ability to recognise and utilise home and community services. • Keeping parents aware of curriculum. • Allowing additional means of pupil evaluation. • Providing experience in problem solving, critical thinking, development of self-discipline and good study habits. • Allowing learning experiences that can be undertaken independently.

PARENT GRIEVANCE PROCEDURE In the case of a parent wishing to follow through a grievance the following steps should be undertaken: Parent – Teacher Step 1. The parent is encouraged to make an appointment to speak firstly with the teacher concerned. Step 2. If the above is not satisfactory, then the parent should speak to the Education Director. The Education Director will then speak to the teacher concerned and parent, separately, to try to resolve the matter satisfactorily for both parties. If the issue is not resolved it may be necessary for the Education Director to organise a meeting between the two parties to try to resolve the matter. Step 3. Failing to resolve the matter in Steps 1 or 2, the parent should speak to the Chairman who will instigate the following process: - Meet separately with the parent and teacher to ascertain the concern. - Resolve the concern following the individual meetings. - Meet with the two parties together to try to resolve the concern. - If unsuccessful, counsel both parties to a resolution. Step 4. At the conclusion of the above process each party will be given a verbal response and a written response in more serious cases.

PARENT INVOLVEMENT Contact between home and school is of vital importance to us. Functions and activities that enable parents to meet teachers and other parents will be organised throughout the year and all teachers are encouraged to take the time to build a positive relationship between the home and school. The involvement of every parent will greatly assist each child to become a happy member of Al Zahra College. A communication folder was introduced in 1999. This folder will be used to maintain homework, newsletters and all other communication between school and home and should be checked by parents each night. Teachers will check folders in the morning for any parent notes and ensure each afternoon that students take their communication folder home with them. The 30 minutes before and after school are ideal times for teachers to interact and meet with parents on an informal basis. Teachers are encouraged to take any opportunity to visit parents at their homes to establish closer bonds and break down the hidden barriers that often exist.

Excursions AZC recognises the value of carefully planned excursions in the total learning program of students. Excursions are defined as organised educational activities that occur away from the school. Whether co-curricular or extra-curricular, these excursions can be an effective means of providing students with learning opportunities beyond those which can be offered within the school. Co-curricular excursions have a connection to one or more subjects of study and its purpose is to reinforce or extend student knowledge, skills or attitudes being developed within the school setting. Extra-curricular excursions have a connection to broader educational goals of a social, sports-related or cultural nature. Excursions relate to the current unit of work and require appropriate planning and satisfactory supervision of students.

Student Leadership Student leadership has been a priority area for development at AZC since its inception. All students (Kindergarten - Year 8) have the opportunity to exercise formal leadership tasks and responsibilities. Each semester, class elections are conducted to select class captains - a boy and girl for each class (K-6) and a girl (Years 7-8). These leaders are inducted formally at a school assembly. During the period of their tenure, these school leaders undertake class and college responsibilities. In the early years of AZC, a Student Representative Council that comprised these class leaders would meet regularly to discuss College issues and organise student-led initiatives. Units of inquiry and excursions have been scheduled for Years 4-6 to promote civic education and provide a practical understanding of local, state and federal government structures. In order to provide Year 6 students with hands-on experience of a parliamentary system, elections were held in November 2007 for the inaugural AZC Parliament that was established in 2008, along the lines of the Australian Federal Parliament. Within the AZC model, students fill the positions of Prime Minister, senior government ministers, as well as an Opposition Leader, shadow ministers and representatives. Staff form the Senate to ratify bills into law. Importantly, as many students as possible experience leadership opportunities by the time they have completed their primary schooling.

Visiting Performances A visiting performance is usually scheduled each term. Ideally, performances will cover all Key Learning Areas over a two-year period. Performances are usually held in the College Hall and usually comprise two sessions - Infants (K-2) and Primary (3-6). It is unlikely that there will be a performance in the term in which Ramadan occurs. It is important for staff to follow-up these activities within the classroom. The costs of these school performances are included in school fees.
