My obsession with plants began soon after moving into my first owned home. The thrill of creating a green space – even if I only had a small courtyard to work with – sparked my interest in outdoor design, and naturally I went on the hunt for magazines, for inspiration. Surprisingly, all I could find were rather traditional garden ideas aimed at homeowners with vast yards. Now that I am living in an apartment, I am not seeing much coverage on ideas for smaller urban spaces, either.

LLOW

LANDSC

NER TO FO APE DESIG

So, I decided to grow my own – magazine, that is. And out sprouted Planted. As the creator and editor of Adore Home Magazine, I thought there was a great opportunity to release a new, spin-off publication under the Adore Home brand, that not only showcased the latest in plant-related products and trends, but also ideas for stylish, urban outdoor spaces. Planted is not just about plants – it’s about how we live inside and out, with greenery enhancing our everyday lives. We showcase the very best creations to do that – whether it’s beautiful planters, contemporary outdoor furniture, glamorous garden tools, fun beach accessories or spaces made modish by plants. Case in point: this issue’s trendy, lush loft – filled with flora at every turn. It proves that even if you don’t have an outdoor space, it’s still possible to create a connection to the outdoors by bringing in fresh foliage and an abundance of indoor plants. I hope this debut issue will inspire you to do the same.

Little Lands

Small wonders indeed, terrariums are flourishing on the decorating scene. Just ask Rachael Harland, founder of Melbourne-based Little Lands, Australia’s only specialty terrarium store.

Small ferns, fittonia, peperomia, syngonium, bonsai: These are some of the foliage favourites starring in their very own eco-scenes at Little Lands, the Melbourne Terrarium Conservatory in Olinda, Victoria. Terrariums, or enclosed glass containers which grow and display plants, are small, yes. But they’ve been drawing huge appeal since Little Lands founder Rachael Harland first began creating and selling them at local markets across the Mornington Peninsula and Dandenong Ranges, years back. By 2013, what Rachael called her “stayat-home-mum-based business” blossomed into a Westfield pop-up shop and finally, its own retail store in Monbulk, one year later. Little Lands has since moved to Olinda, with its former space becoming the studio where Rachael and her staff bring these tiny plant settings to life. So, why are terrariums so en vogue with interiors right now – besides the fact they’re utterly adorable? Rachael attributes their popularity to an overall “houseplant boom” upon us. “Our world is very focused on the benefits of exercise, wellness and improving lifestyle – plants do all of this,” says Rachael. “Studies have shown plants increase positive mental attitudes and

wellness in people, so incorporating houseplants and terrariums in interior design is a must, as far as I’m concerned.” Besides this development, terrariums are incredibly easy to care for, according to the shop owner. “Terrariums thrive on neglect,” Rachael explains. “They are typically an enclosed eco-system that don’t need watering – or very little watering.” In fact, most of the “little lands” Rachael constructs only need a water one to three times a year, she says – allowing everyone to enjoy plant life indoors, regardless of how we live. “With busy lifestyles and city apartment dwellers, I think lots of people want to bring nature into their homes,” Rachael says. “Terrariums do just that.” Bottom line – plants look good, she says, adding, “They bring an abundance of perfect design to homes.” Speaking of impeccable interiors, that’s just what you can expect upon entering Little Lands. Their Olinda “attic” conservatory store emits the kind of warmth only a cosy timber ceiling, crisp white walls and earthy displays can provide. We can also count on new one-of-a-kind pieces, fresh plants and displays, each week, Rachael says. This includes a variety of happening houseplants to

breathe texture and verve into our homes – from the much-loved Calathea orbifolia and cactus, to the ohso-rare Monstera obliqua and Peperomia argyreia. And let’s face it – it’s the people that really make a shop shine. Such is the case at Little Lands. “Our gorgeous retail staff are amazing and so helpful,” Rachael says. So, once we’ve chosen the right terrarium, what’s the best way to showcase it at home? “I love terrariums being on display in an open area,” Rachael says. “Don’t clutter its surroundings: A nice, bright space – so it can stand alone and get its own attention – is perfect. Entrance tables, coffee tables, bedsides and even the kitchen bench are all great places.” Watch for Little Lands temporary storefronts sprouting up in major shopping centres across Melbourne.

BRAND PROFILE IVY MUSE

21

IVY MUSE The art of showcasing greenery and bringing outdoors in is paying off in spades for nature-loving duo Alana Langan and Jacqui Vidal of Melbourne’s Ivy Muse, with the launch of their very own concept store, Botanical Emporium.

PHOTOGRAPHY ANNETTE O’BRIEN / WORDS PIP MILLER

Step inside the wonderland that is Ivy Muse Botanical Emporium to discover what is quite possibly Australia’s finest curated botanical destination, showcasing plants, ceramics, original art and botanical wares from around the globe.

In terms of design statements, there are many in this 65-square metre store fit-out that, according to Alana, began with a four-metre high, 24-carat goldplated feature display wall, as well as hand-blown lighting by local glass artist Amanda Dziedzic.

Having outgrown their retail space on Greville Street, the search for a larger premises unlocked Alana Langan’s and Jacqui Vidal’s idea to create a concept emporium. Standing in this new space on High Street in Armadale – its high ceilings drenched in natural light – sparked the duo’s imagination, along with a desire to work closely with likeminded designers and artisans, to deliver a holistic and inspiring space for those who love greenery.

The pair also worked closely with Aarden Design and Yard Furniture to manufacture custom joinery throughout, while employing a simple colour palette, oak flooring and handcrafted installation by paper artist Amanda May Lee, to adorn the space.

Jacqui says that as a result, they have been able to extend their wares selection with a whole host of designers they love and respect. These include Bonnie and Neil, Studio Twocan, Sophie Jane Moran, Armadillo & Co, Karen Walker Jewellery, Jane Heng, Miniscapes, Wingnut & Co and Botanica Boutique among others.

“The ‘piece de resistance’ has to be our beautiful, 3.5-metre uncommon black bean tree, sourced by landscape designer Phillip Withers - which took five of us to get inside and into position, but was well worth it,” said Alana. Another special element of the store is its gallerylike feel, which Alana and Jacqui said will provide an interesting exhibition space for artists invited to produce ‘botanical-inspired’ works that will then be on display for six weeks at a time. 22

For Alana and Jacqui, they may in fact be riding a trend but both believe the practice of bringing greenery indoors is more than that.

“There’s so many benefits to keeping plants, and people new to it are only scratching the surface when they choose plants based only on looks. On a visual level alone, plants can help soften and beautify spaces, but they’re also very good for our health. As well as offering us cleaner air by removing toxins from within the home, studies have shown plants can decrease stress levels, help boost creativity and memory retention. Plus, nurturing and caring for plants really is good for the soul,” says Alana.

“W E L OV E H OYA F O R ITS PRETTY, TRAILING APPEARANCE. IT REALLY COMES INTO ITS OWN D I S P L AY E D O N S H E L V E S O R TA L L E R P L A N T S TA N D S . ”

Jacqui agrees and says that Ivy Muse is all about encouraging creativity with greenery. For their new ‘Boheme’ collection of plant wares, the duo experimented with texture, shape and colour to present a modern take on the botanical houseplant trend borne from the ‘70s. Flowing designs combine with earthy colours and contrasting metallics to bring about a sense of freedom. The range comprises three brand new, Melbourne-designed and made plant stands: Each is available in black and white as well as a limited edition colour unique to that design: Prism (Blush Clay), Quartz (Moonshine) and Halo (Olive). Halo is also available in three sizes.

WALKING IRIS

DEVIL'S IVY

(Neomarica gracilis)

(Epipremnum aureum)

This exotic-looking plant, with its graceful sword-like foliage, requires plenty of water in the warmer months and only a watering once a month in the winter. Thriving in shady positions, this lush plant is ideal for mass planting and even propagates on its own – great for filling vast spaces. It blooms white, yellow or blue flowers that resemble a cross between an orchid and an iris, although only lasting one day.

Ideal for indoors, this tropical plant is quick-growing and looks best on a shelf or benchtop, or in a hanging planter, so its long vines can drape. It thrives in bright, filtered light and requires water once per week. Cat owners might want to reconsider this one, as devil’s ivy is poisonous to felines.

BROMELIAD (Bromeliaceae) Bromeliads are tropical plants belonging to the pineapple family. This very easy-to-care-for plant can tolerate just about any weather conditions, although the softer leaf varieties mostly prefer shade. Their large, strappy leaves and dramatic flowers are an excellent addition to any sub-tropical garden.

PARLOUR PALM (Chamaedorea elegans) Out of all the palms available, only a few make good house plants. Parlour palm is one of those few, adapting to average indoor conditions of low light and humidity levels. PLUM GORGEOUS (Loropetalum chinense) Plum gorgeous is an easy-maintenance plant with deep, dark foliage and a shrubby appearance, making it ideal for informal hedging or mass planting in larger areas. But its true beauty lies in the vivid hot pink flowers it blooms in the spring and autumn.

TRENDS

RUBBER PLANT (Ficus elastica; ‘black prince’) The rubber plant rates as one of the best houseplants to clean the air. It also scores really well with resistance to pests and diseases, making it an ideal low-maintenance plant. Requiring filtered sunlight, it’s best left indoors, in a brightly lit spot. Its dark green leaves appear black in certain light, making it one dramatic-looking beauty!

BRAZEN RAISIN (Heuchera) Brazen raisin is an outstanding plant for semi-shaded to shady areas. Its delicate, pale pink flowers bloom from late winter thru to spring, and look striking against its deep foliage.

BLACK ROSE (Aeonium arboreum; ‘Schwarzkopf ’) Black rose’s spectacular deep plum (almost black) rosettes make this an interesting choice for succulent lovers. Team it with a black pot to create the ultimate sultry look. Requires little water.

JADE PLANT

FLOWER DUST PLANT

(Crassula ovata)

BLUE CHALK STICKS (Senecio mandraliscae) Blue chalk sticks are extremely hardy and suitable for vast garden beds and borders, due to their quick-spreading properties. Full sun or shade, indoors or out, this versatile succulent is very drought tolerant, although it will grow more quickly with regular watering. Great for coastal gardens, they also bloom daisy-like flowers during summer.

Jade plants, in some cultures, are considered to bring good luck - but you don’t need “lady luck” to keep one alive. Here's a little know-how to keep yours thriving: (Their small, white or pink star-like flowers in the spring are well worth it!)

(Kalanchoe pumila; 'quicksilver') This delicate succulent with frosty silver grey-leaves, offers up beautiful lavender flowers from late winter to early spring.

Requiring bright sunlight and low humidity, jade plants should be watered liberally (a good soaking). Be sure to allow the potting mix to dry out completely before watering again. Jade plants make great houseplants – just make sure they’re in a sunlit space.

Easy to grow, flower dust plants require full sun to part shade, and water, once the soil has dried out. Display in a hanging planter or in a garden bed.

MOLDED WAX AGAVE (Echeveria agavoides; 'aquamarine') This stemless succulent with a rosette of icy, emerald-green leaves, produces apricot-pink and yellow flowers in the spring. Keep indoors in a brightly lit spot, or outdoors in full sun. Requires little or no water in winter, and plenty of water in the warmer months.

*

LOW-MAINTENANCE Succulents in general are easy to look after and low-maintenance. They look great potted - ideal for renters wanting to pretty-up their balcony, deck, courtyard, or even windowsill. Just make sure they get enough sunlight.

TA I T Born and bred in Australia, Tait embraces style and function to the fullest in its outdoor furniture design. But to founders and spouses Susan and Gordon Tait, their brand is about much more. PHOTOGRAPHY BROOKE HOLM

So to Tait, ‘quality’ means a lot more than products that withstand harsh weather. Firstly, it’s about smart design that looks good and lasts a lifetime. “Over the years – nearly 25, in fact – Tait has become renowned for creating outdoor designs that are clean, elegant and suited to withstand a life outside,” says Susan. “Producing high-quality work with thoughtful detail and beautiful finishes has always been something we’ve prided ourselves on.” Consequently, Tait has collaborated with the nation’s top designers from the start, including Adam Goodrum, whose best-selling Volley collection (Volley Chair shown) blends clean, modern lines and netted steel mesh. “By working with some of Australia’s greatest designers, we’re not only able to create an unrivalled standard of design – we work with craftspeople who share the same principles of honest and quality design,” Susan explains.

Terrace Plant Stand designed by bernabeifreeman for Tait ($460).

From innovative seating to ultra-sleek tables and plant-cessories, Tait embodies quality design and craftsmanship. But the motivation behind it is something much more than Gordon Tait’s vast background in sheet metal work and Susan Tait’s past as creative director for Red Earth cosmetics. It’s the founders’ shared vision of being authentic with their brand. “Our CEO at Red Earth had the belief that people wanted an authentic story behind a brand,” says Susan, now creative director at Tait. “‘It’s all about the sizzle, not the sausage,’” he would say. “It taught me a lot about presentation and that people do relate to a genuine story.” 43

Contributing to the success of Volley and other lines including Jak & Jil, Tidal and Terrace, is the very metal the collections were built with. According to Susan, Gordon’s passion for metal work has him continuously testing the material’s potential, in order to create the best possible product. She adds, “We also regularly investigate new materials and how we can combine them – moving away from traditional outdoor furniture materials, to challenge what outdoor furniture can be.” Continuing to enhance Australia’s design scene, this year saw Tait launch the Tidal Sunlounge with Trent Jansen, as part of its namesake collection. Other new products have included the Element fire pit by Adam Goodrum and most recently, the Breeze Modular series. All ranges are available in Tait’s Sydney and Melbourne showrooms now. 176 Johnston St, Fitzroy, Melbourne 611 Elizabeth St, Redfern, Sydney

GLOWPEAR Glowpear self-watering outdoor planters are the cream of the crop for busy urban dwellers. Cofounder Lloyd Fenn of Melbourne shares why. PHOTOGRAPHY MING NOMCHONG + DILLON SEITCHIK-REARDON

Café Planter ($999).

Ever dreamed of cultivating fresh herbs or other plants but doubted your home size – or ability? Now you can get growing, thanks to Glowpear, the self-watering, outdoor planter with the flexibility to fit in any space.

Min i

Ra il (

). 29 $1

If you're time-poor, GlowPear's planters take the hassle out of watering. You'll only need to top up once every one to three weeks!

How it works: “Glowpear planters are designed to be watered directly into the base,” explains co-founder Lloyd Fenn. “While times vary, a full reservoir should last from one to three weeks between watering. There’s a handy level indicator to remind you when to top up.” And while the free-standing or mobile (Café) planter is the perfect fit for a courtyard, those with even smaller spaces can choose from three compact models, suitable for the kitchen (Mini Bench), wallmounting (Mini Wall), or balcony/fence rails (Mini Rail). Glowpear (the direct translation of ‘Glühbirne’ – German for ‘light-bulb’), was created by Lloyd and his fellow Melbourne-based “ideas men” Simon Lockrey, Nathan Pollock and Joel Anderson, after his own failed attempts to grow herbs and vegetables within his inner-city courtyard. “I wanted to come up with a solution that was approachable, simple and achievable for people with limited time and space,” explains Lloyd, a design engineer by day. So, he began developing prototypes with longtime mate Simon, a design engineer and academic. From there, the two collaborated with Nathan (director of an industrial design firm) to

refine the design, then Joel (a corporate adviser) to get Glowpear on the market. The result: A planter with brains, versatility – and a crisp, modern look. “By focusing on clean architectural lines and a simple, classic finish, Glowpear planters work well with any architectural style, inside and out,” says Lloyd.

Mini Bench ($129).

Any decorating tips for Glowpear gardeners? “When styling with ornamental plants, you can’t go wrong with bold, strappy foliage to complement (Glowpear’s) architectural look,” Lloyd advises. “Stick to one or two plant varieties per planter, for maximum impact.”

UNEARTHED GARDEN Stylish and functional, Unearthed Garden makes it easier than ever to ‘landscape’ indoors and out – thanks to simple, homegrown craftsmanship, says co-owner Bec Dentry. Uncomplicated products, uncompromising style: From the handsome Wood Stacker to the statement wall planters and plant troughs, Bec and Marcus Dentry and their team of local talent bring us Unearthed Garden – handcrafted furniture that simply works. Bec, a former advertising creative who runs Unearthed’s product design and business side, says the Flinders, Victoria company grew out of a “happy accident” nine years ago. “My husband, Marcus, is a landscaper, and we have a team of wonderful guys that work for us,”

Bec explains. “When the weather is bad, the last thing we want them to be doing is digging a hole in the rain. So, we needed something nice and dry for them to do. We thought making things for our landscaping clients seemed like a good fit.” Out came the straightforward yet smart Wood Stacker – now a top-seller – homespun out of steel. A friend requested one for her shop, and the rest was history. Steel and timber are just some of the quality materials that comprise Unearthed décor, now created by native craftspeople. Their art, in itself, adds even more 45

meaning to the minimalism, Bec believes: “I’ve come to appreciate (handcraftsmanship) as a lost craft. When I pick up one of our pieces, I know there’s a lot more than just me in it. It’s a nice feeling.” A large range of Unearthed Garden's products can be purchased from Melbourne store The Family Love Tree.

CAPRA DESIGNS This Melbourne-based company shows how homewares for plants can be as ‘green’ as the plants themselves – not to mention, naturally stylish. Co-founder Bianca Lambert explains. PHOTOGRAPHY EVE WILSON

Trilogy plant hanger ($149 each) with eco resin pot ($59 each).

Displaying our favourite foliage to an art form starts with Capra Designs. From the earthy resin pots and vases, to the steel-sational plant stands and hangers, the outdoor décor founded by Melbournians Bianca Lambert and Thomas Wilson is much more just that. They’re products “with a conscience”, contends the duo.

*

“We work hard to identify wastage and strategise at minimising it,” Bianca says. The prime example: “During the production of pots, excess resin was accumulating quickly and being disposed. It became obvious that a new product could rise up from this wastage.” Thus, surplus turned stunning – in the form of Capra’s Eco vases. Furthermore, the entire Eco collection (including pots) is handmade by Bianca using a water rather than solvent-based resin. The vessels are then given organic flair through the application of a special paint process. “I mix colours from basic pigments,” explains Bianca, “then experiment with pour techniques to create different patterns in the resin.” The pots pair perfectly with Capra’s powdercoated steel plant hangers and stands, designed

by Thomas. Manufactured locally, the geometric motifs set a sophisticated stage for any greenery, while “providing a sculptural interest in the home,” says Bianca, adding: “They’re beautiful frames for plant life.” Like Thomas, Bianca grew up in a crafty family, arguably the seed that planted Capra Designs from the beginning. 46

Unique and one-ofa-kind, these eco resin vases are works of art in their own right.

“Tom and I have always made things together – crafting is just something we love,” says Bianca. “We previously worked together creating jewellery and furniture for our home, (along with) turning vases into hanging pots.” So, how can we make Capra Designs flourish in our homes? “With our pots, think about the colour and pattern when selecting the plant,” Bianca advises. “Also consider where the plant will be positioned, and whether you need height or drape to create balance in that position.”

Miss Marigold beach umbrella ($450).

“Colour has the power to lift us. On grey, drizzly days, sometimes a slice of something bright will make that day a little bit better.” You can’t help but love Basil Bangs – bringing the bliss of summer year round, with their fashionable collection of outdoor umbrellas, rain umbrellas, cushions and picnic rugs. But even if you’re not a style-aholic, Basil Bangs still resonates because their products are “designed for real life,” says Krista Huebner, who heads the Sydneybased brand with her husband, Mike Durante. Mike started Basil Bangs with his oldest mate years back, while the two were discussing the difficulty of finding a quality, traditional beach umbrella. So, they decided to build one. “The goal was to create a contemporary classic;

bring some of our favourite vintage umbrellas of the ‘60s and ‘70s into ‘the now’, with advanced fabrics, quality fixtures and finishes,” says Krista. Five years later, that vintage vitality has swept the outdoor scene – including hotels and cafes – with Basil Bangs’ resilient range of umbrellas, cushions and picnic rugs. So, while Mike focuses on Basil Bangs’ product design and development, and Krista, on branding and marketing, the two ensure their products continue to be eye-catching, as well as long-lasting. “We’re known for bright colours and graphic prints, which reflect summery, happy days,” Krista says. 48

The duo constantly trials new printing techniques, fabrics and finishes, to make certain their collections can withstand Australia’s arduous climate and the “real-life” situations that demand low maintenance – cleanup included. “Our products are designed to enhance being outside – rain or shine – and work seamlessly,” says Krista. “You don’t want to be mucking around, trying to put together an umbrella while you’re with your kids at the beach; worrying about spilling something on your rug, or cheeky pets having a rest on your outdoor cushions.”

RETRO PRINT R E V I VA L Retro Print Revival of Melbourne shines a new light on mid-century design, with one captivating collection of lamps and planters. Founder Tamara Watts tells all. PHOTOGRAPHY MIKE BAKER / STYLING RUTH WELSBY

The mid-century modern design of Retro Print Revival 's planters are not only a vessel for plants e. but also a cool decorator piece for the hom Having a background in visual merchandising and styling certainly has its perks for Retro Print Revival (RPR) founder and creative director, Tamara Watts. But it was her love of shopping second-hand years back that switched her on to the business of creating mid-century-style lamps and planters. At one such market, Tamara had stumbled upon a woman selling her vintage fabric collection. Tamara bought it with the intention of using it “one day”… which finally came, in the form of making lampshades for friends. By 2009, upcycling time-honoured lamp bases with new, retro lampshades grew into a business for Tamara – one that has since extended to designing classic-style fabrics, lamps and planters – and making them to order. Each component of RPR’s products is handcrafted by a local team that includes a lampshade-maker, ceramicist, woodturner, furniture-maker, CNC cutter, fibreglass-maker, metal worker and fabric printers. “Our products are classic designs, made to last,”

Tamara says. “Having everything made here in Australia ensures we have a close eye on quality control, providing our customers with only the best product.” And foxiest, of course, with their mid-century designs and ‘60s-‘70s era prints. The Rocket planters and floor lamps in particular elevate the past to a modish level: “We use the principles of European Modernism to breathe new life into our lamps and planters – taking up where mid-century fashionistas and designers left off.” This year, RPR’s planter range released two new colours – mint and stone – the perfect enhancement for retro or modern design schemes. Says Tamara, “Showcasing a beautiful, midcentury piece in a modern home can really make it stand out.”

Home to Scott Feltham and Nicola Sims, and their two children, this balcony is considered an outdoor alternative to a lounge room. “The balcony is always the most popular spot to wind down at the end of the night,” says Nicola. A subtle reflection of current urban design, the space uses bluestone, raw timber and steel as key elements, with a modern and relaxed feel. Nicola loves to be surrounded by warm colour and bold, simple shapes, evident in her online homewares business – Luum. “I’ve used colours that complement the soft pastel tones in our succulents, and balance well with tones of green. Cushions from my own range make the balcony inviting. The tables and daybed are from my ‘Simply’ range – bringing warmth through colour, natural timber and their simple form. I tend to find it easier to relax when surrounded by things that aren’t overcomplicated.” Measuring approximately 4x6 metres, the space has been maximised with streamlined furniture and plants in pots as opposed to garden beds, while the kitchen and dining areas – adjacent to the balcony – have bi-fold doors that open to conjoin the indoor open-plan living space with the terrace. The laser-cut metal screen is the hero – inspired by a need for privacy; balanced by the desire not to block too much of the Melbourne skyline. The simple geometry of the design complements the bold foliage scattered throughout the balcony, which, with the numerous potted plants inside, ensure a garden-like feel despite living in a dense urban landscape.

NATURAL MATERIALS “Black-butt shiplap was used on both sides of the laser- cut screens, as I wanted to bring some warmth and natural materials to the area,” says Nicola. A Luum ‘Simply’ daybed in petal pink and Brita Sweden rug from Habitat Home also soften the space.

T O P 3 design tips be unique

1

Don’t do what everyone else is doing. Spice things up outside – introduce things like a swing or hanging chairs. Not only do they look great, but they are actually super fun.

2

use holiday inspiration

Be inspired by your favourite holiday destinations, so that you feel like you are on vacation at home. We love tropical places where the indoors and outdoors are all one flowing space.

3

choose easy-care plants

Go for lush, green plants that don’t need too much love. Everyone is busy – so to avoid killing off too many green babies, just go for agaves, palms and cacti that don’t need too much loving.

Queensland is often touted for its favourable yearround climate, and Sophie and Michael make the most of it with their super stylish pavilion: “We live out there and use it 24/7,” says Sophie. With the arrival of their eight-month-old son, Hendrix, the couple knew their social life would be changing, and created their outdoor space to ensure that, although their social life would shift, it wouldn’t suffer. The space – complete with daybed and custombuilt bar – is protected from the weather, and makes the kitchen and dining space feel substantially larger, as everything flows nicely onto the deck. “I believe in making the outdoor area an extension of the house. You don’t have to use plain outdoor furniture. Rugs, pots and art really make it feel like your indoor rooms,” says Sophie who, inspired by time spent in Bali, has accessorised with lush

plants such as fiddle leaf figs, cacti, agaves, banana leaves, and elephant ears. Sophie’s impressive pot collection blends seamlessly with her monochromatic palette and boho/coastal style.

They come in so many designs and sizes, plus they have a lightweight option, which is so much easier to move than the traditional heavier pots.” All of the décor was worth the effort, as it supports one of Sophie’s and Michael’s favourite past-times – having company over. “We love entertaining. Michael is an amazing cook and I love making cocktails, so when we have friends over, it is usually a pretty fun night – filled with so much food, yummy drinks and dancing in our kitchen,” says Sophie. 59

As the owners, builders, and interior designers of a masterful home renovation, Eve and Matt were keen to incorporate the latest botanical trend with a focus on plant life inside and out. When it came to creating an outdoor living space, the couple were careful to integrate a terrace into the house design. “We did this by running the blackbutt decking in the same direction as the floorboards, for continuity. We rendered the garden walls in concrete, which goes back against the same used in the new part of the house. Additionally, we used black cladding on the boundary walls, which ties in with the use of black steel inside of the house,”

says Eve. With the rendered concrete wall as a base for planting the bamboo screens along the back wall, aspidistra – which is a leafy but super hardy plant – was chosen to run the length of the left boundary wall. The couple also used concrete pots in various sizes, that they grouped together to add more green and interest – without compromising a sense of ‘space’. For the pots, they used their favourite aspidistra, as well as cascading varieties of silver falls, devil’s ivy and mini cog. “We used plants that would act as screens, and that were evergreen,” explains Eve. “We wanted the area to look lush and have appeal, all year round.” 65

bathroom with a view “The garden outside the bathroom barely gets any sun, so we needed to achieve a luscious green look and feel with plants that were happy in the shade. For this, we used tropical varieties such as ferns, palms, birds of paradise and birds nests,” says Eve. According to Eve, their bathroom garden is framed by a window, and was created as the major feature of the room. In recognising its prominence, she and Matt carefully curated the plants at varying heights. “We really played with the design, well before any planting took place,” Eve recalls. “Along that same boundary wall, we also planted a climbing fig evergreen vine, which, over the course of nearly three years, has grown over eight metres in height and will eventually cover the wall.” 66

get shady

Ensure you have shade. For us, the awning was a blessing: If it’s too hot to sit under the sun, we are not forced inside.

2

plant maintenance

Consider plants that you have time to care for. Don’t install high maintenance plants if you are too time-poor to care for them.

3

buy once, buy well

Buy good pieces of furniture that will go the distance, as the outdoors can be harsh and items can rust easily.

The best part is that you can hear the ocean from our courtyard, so you are swimming in a salt pool to the rhythmic sound of the waves. It’s heaven.”

With lush vegetation high on the agenda, stylist Julia Green approached the design of her outdoor deck with impeccable attention to detail. The house itself is an L-shape built around the garden, and with doors that slide all the way open, the deck becomes an extension of the interior.

having Pippi’s Plants install a vertical garden of succulents.

“I love the way I can see the deck from all vantage points of our house,” says Julia, who chose the silver ash timber of the decking for its faded patina and ability to blend with the surrounding environment.

With her fondness of succulents stemming from her childhood, Julia used the plants to create a stunning effect in her outdoor masterpiece: “Their colours, shapes and textures make them an artful but practical choice.”

The vision was to have a private enclosed space, encompassing pool and motorised awning, to allow year-round entertaining. As the deck measures in at around 220 square metres, Julia made the most of the available space by

VERTICAL GARDEN Julia hired Pippi’s Plants to create an outdoor masterpiece with the succulent-filled vertical garden. “Pippi’s included irrigation in ours. So in summer, we drip-feed it once a day, and in winter, less. Michael (the owner of Pippi’s Plants) pays the odd visit to mine to check that it’s still flourishing. It’s one of the best things we added to our home by a long shot.”

As a passionate gardener, Rupert Smith was initially wary about purchasing a loft apartment that precluded an outdoor garden setting. However, three years after moving in with his 13-year old son, Hero, the greenery-filled loft is without a doubt, “home”.

the compact loft that is dominated by dramatic industrial steel and concrete.

While the loft’s architecture is streamlined, Rupert has added layers of interest within the home by his choice of décor – lush plants.

While orchids are a favourite, Rupert professes a love of “interesting” air plants, which are supremely easy to grow. In fact, these warm-weather plants can thrive despite neglect. There are more than 650 types of air plants (e.g. tillandsia) that grow without soil, getting all the water and nutrients they require to survive through their specialised leaves. Air plants only use their roots to attach to rocks, trees, shrubs and the ground.

As co-owner of VM Central & Olive Studio, (South Africa’s only accredited visual merchandising school), Rupert has 20 odd years of visual merchandising experience and is well-known for his outstanding creative direction, having worked on iconic international brands such as Harley Davidson and Heineken. Rupert attributes his career to making him “very aware of aesthetics, and I think that this has definitely filtered through to my home.” He describes the visual narrative of his home as a mix of vintage finds and modern elements, and “playing with texture and black and white.” However, it is the abundant curation of indoor plants and foliage that brings life and vibrancy to

76

“Plants bring life to an interior,” explains Rupert, whose own love affair with gardening stems from growing up in a “huge garden” at his family home.

“Add as much greenery and leaves as you can to a space,” advises Rupert, when asked about creating a similar lush indoor oasis. “Also, hanging plants bring the feeling from outside, inside.” His tips for maintaining indoor plants in optimum condition include spraying plants every day with a water spray bottle, in addition to watering them once a week and being liberal with organic feed in the spring and summer months.

Amidst the greenery, Rupert puts his enviable interior design skills to use, adding depth and layers of interest to the loft. Most notable is his sizable collection of taxidermic birds, whose enhancement to the plentiful foliage is a happy coincidence: “I have always had a fascination with taxidermy, and my birds are a collection that keep on growing,” says Rupert. Interspersed between these playfully macabre design features are more nods to Mother Nature, including numerous animal skulls, mounted butterflies, deer antlers and birds’ nests. The natural light and airy volume of the space has been cleverly emphasised by “adding lots of glass to the space, reflecting the light beautifully,” says Rupert. Rupert’s son, Hero, has been known to liken their home to a museum, which is not far from the mark, with Rupert’s talent for composition and the many and ever-changing vignettes punctuating the loft’s space.

“I HAVE ALWAYS HAD A FASCINATION WITH TAXIDERMY, AND MY BIRDS ARE A COLLECTION THAT KEEP ON GROWING.”

When originally contemplating the purchase of the loft, Rupert was drawn to the strong industrial elements – such as the steel windows and staircase, and to the volume, but was concerned about it feeling cold and soulless. To this end, he has injected texture and character with a judicious use of fabrics such as linen, skins, felt and wool. These, combined with the warmth of timber and the highlights of luscious greenery, ensure the loft is truly a home and oasis of calm, where an outdoor garden is superfluous.
