EDITOR LONI PARKER

THE

Welcome to the Escape edition of Adore – inspired my recent trip to California. This issue is all about leaving the ordinary behind and discovering extraordinary destinations, lustworthy home tours and dreamy bedrooms.

EDITION

If you’ve ever pondered a trip to the Golden State, all of my recommendations can be found in our California Dreamin’ feature (from page 85). I was fortunate enough to visit LA, San Francisco, Napa Valley, Laguna Beach and Palm Springs (my happy place) this past February. Whilst I loved every part of my trip, there were definitely some highlights: If mid-century design is your jam, then Modernism Week in Palm Springs will be a real treat. I can personally recommend the Modernism Week Showcase Home, Palm Springs Door Tour and Modern Garden Tour. And with even more fabulous events on-offer, you’ll absolutely want to book tickets for next year’s Modernism Week (February 14-24, 2019). Learn more at modernismweek.com. Or, if cosying up to a fireplace in a tranquil cottage is more your cup of tea, you’ll want to stay in the gorgeous Napa Valley. The surrounding towns are so quaint, and of course there are wineries... say no more, right? And I’d definitely revisit the OC (Orange County) again: I adored Laguna Beach, with its cute art galleries; Balboa Island, with their famous Balboa ice cream bars (trust me – you need to try one); and the shopping at Lido Marina Village in Newport saw my suitcase expand by a few kilograms – and believe me, I held back. I could have shopped there all day! What’s your idea of escape? I hope this issue inspires a discovery of sorts.

“Being on-site with the the manufacturers has given us ability to create on the spot..."

The dynamic pairing of like-minded businesses like Onyx & Smoke and The Upholstery Shop is upping the stakes in the interior world with exceptional custom-design services. PHOTOGRAPHY MELISSA TONKIN WORDS JACQUI GREIG

It was an undeniable synergy that brought soft furnishings retailer Onyx & Smoke and renowned furniture manufacturer The Upholstery Shop together as a formidable design duo in Perth.

Since the two businesses merged together in one

Serendipitously, The Upholstery Shop had been manufacturing Onyx & Smoke’s stylish soft furnishings for several years. With a focus on design a key strength of Onyx & Smoke, Creative Director Emma Matthews would work with The Upholstery Shop owner Kerry Beilken on the technical side of manufacturing their cushions and ottomans in a practical and efficient way.

central retail location in Perth, clients can now access the best of design and manufacturing. While the Onyx & Smoke team assists in the design lounge, chair, ottoman and modular ranges, The Upholstery Shop reciprocates by working their magic on technical aspects of new product ranges, such as upholstered bedheads. “Being on-site with the manufacturers has given us the ability to create on the spot – translating ideas

into reality at a much faster pace,” explains Emma. “We are able to immediately service our walk-in, custom-design clients in an environment that is conducive to creative thinking.” She continues, “We have clients requesting tweaks to our existing range, unique design advice and custom requests. Having this partnership means we can offer a quicker turnaround for custom quotations.” And because both businesses have a need for a vast array of fabric samples, their combined selection is extensive – resulting in “endless choices on-site for our customers,” according to Emma. The newly refurbished showroom houses a studio equipped with a design bench and wall-to-wall fabric swatches, which facilitates custom consults for those wanting support with fabric and product selections. It’s all in the stylish setting of The Upholstery Shop’s range of lounges and sofas – which are also available in custom fabric choices, and can be tweaked to suit the room shape and size. In addition, the space supports local makers, and hosts a curated range of sample pieces from Chrissy Couture – a bespoke furniture brand that includes consoles, coffee tables, side tables, and shelving. It’s a harmonious business pairing that is successfully taking custom design to the next level.

ARTIST PROFILE

ANNIE

EVERINGHAM Intuitive and colour-driven, Newcastle artist Annie Everingham creates dreamy, contemporary abstract artworks using acrylics, ink and pastels. WORDS JACQUI GREIG

With a background in fashion and textile design, Annie Everingham’s spontaneity is reflected in her richly layered work. “I tend to work quite quickly, and then refine some of the chaos I’ve created,” she explains. Having only been painting seriously for the past five years, Annie is constantly pushing herself to “experiment and define what it is I want to put out into the world.” Her youthful and unreserved signature style is influenced by the laidback and creative vibe of Newcastle, where she is based with her partner. Her natural surroundings also have her drawn to soft, feminine tones of pastel pinks and lilacs, along with

beautiful, bold greens. She believes a home should be the ultimate expression of your lifestyle, experiences and personality: “Art is (at) the heart of that, because most people connect to an artwork they really love on a deeply emotional level.” Annie’s original artworks can be found in Fenton & Fenton (Melbourne), Jumbled (Orange), and her own online store.

Each product is a ‘forever’ kind of piece, something to pass TA M A R A WA T T S down to the grandchildren.

“I’ve had an amazing response, so I will simply continue to design based on what I love, rather than catering towards a certain taste that isn’t me,” she explains. Working closely with a textile designer, Tamara has produced two fabulous geometric prints, ‘Freya’ and ‘Dahlia’, in addition to beautiful linen fabrics in warm tones of terracotta, ochre and deep claret – all of which can be mixed and matched with various lamp styles.

RETRO PRINT

REVIVAL Using geometrics and bold retro designs, Retro Print Revival is cleverly merging mid-century design into the millennial consciousness.

“Having something that is custom-made is special. Each product is a ‘forever’ kind of piece, something to pass down to the grandchildren. We’ve sought out the best makers in Melbourne and the quality of their workmanship is amazing,” she says. Environmental responsibility and supporting local manufacturers is at the heart of Tamara’s ethos, while capturing the peace, love and music of an era now lost.

WORDS JACQUI GREIG

As both a creative and a businesswoman, Tamara Watts has learned to stay true to her vision. As founder of Retro Print Revival, Tamara designs custom lamps and elegant planters with a strong appreciation of European modernism. For several years she chose to shy away from designs that were “too 1970s”, for fear of alienating. But with her latest collection, she has thrown caution to the wind and embraced the boldness of mid-century design. 22

CREATE YOUR SAFE-HAVEN Nowadays the bedroom is for living not just sleeping. It’s the one place where you can completely relax and unwind at the end of a hard day. Mattress and sleep expert, SIMBA, has put together a list of simple ideas to make your bedroom a personal sanctuary. Choose the right mattress The quality of sleep you get should be the priority. Ditch the lumpy, uncomfortable mattress and try a modern, memory foam and spring mattress. When looking for a mattress you should always consider a company that combines experience with innovative technological developments.

Keep it tidy

STYLIST HEATHER NETTE KING / PHOTOGRAPHER MIKE BAKER

A messy and cluttered room is not a calming one. Anything unnecessary on show just adds to the disorder and gives the impression the room is dirty, even if it’s not.

Invest in quality bedding Good quality bed linen and doonas help to create the ultimate cosy experience.

Hide the tech Laptops, phones and televisions have their place in the bedroom, but you need to know how to escape them at the

right time for optimum sleep quality. Try storing these items away from view to ensure that standby lights and the temptation of the Facebook news feed do not distract you at least an hour before bed time.

Get sensual Engage your senses! Natural aromas from candles, diffusers and essential oils will help ease your tension and give a fresh feel to the area.

Set the mood Lighting is incredibly important for ensuring your bedroom is your own personal sanctuary. During the day, you should let in as much natural light as possible, whereas a warm ambient glow from a lamp is ideal for after-dark use. It’s also important to keep your bedroom as dark as possible when you sleep, be sure to use blackout curtains if you live near any streetlights.

Tested with the Sleep to Live Institute who have compiled body profiling data from 10 million people, the SIMBA Hybrid® mattress is the highest quality spring and memory foam mattress of its kind in the Australian market. It offers the comfort of five luxurious layers of memory foam with the support of 2,500 patented conical pocket springs.

Cleverly rolled and perfectly packed in its box; the Simba Hybrid® can be delivered to your door the next day in metro areas. Each mattress comes with a 100-night sleep trial promise with no hassle returns and a 10-year guarantee. K I T C H E N “Having a black kitchen was a must for us – it makes such an impact without being overbearing. The kitchen is the hub of our home – it’s where we do a lot of entertainin – and all of the elements incorporated work so well in this home. It’s functional and very practical for a family. It has everything you need without being overdone,” remarks Kayla. Stools from MRD Home; Sussex ‘Scala’ tap in brushed rose gold from Reece; Statuario Venato island bench top from Smartstone; concrete bench top from Concrete Nation; herringbone tiles from Stone and Tile Studio; pendant lights from Beacon; flowers from White Havana.

“The only musts were an all-black timber family home – with light timber elements and a void or two,” Kayla Boyd says of the laidback brief that she and her husband, Brisbane Broncos captain Darius Boyd, gave to their architect and builder. The resulting home ticks all the boxes, with its striking black exterior tempered by warm timber tones. Swathes of glass reflect the Queensland sky and the lush green and scarlet of the neighbourhood’s trademark poinciana trees. The couple were keen to build in one of the established northside suburbs that border two of Brisbane’s iconic horse racing venues. Having found a property – a nondescript, post-war home in Hendra – and been given the green light by their architects, Base Architecture, Kayla wasted no time in securing it. Darius was away at State of Origin camp at the time, and hadn’t viewed the block. “It was one of those rare opportunities,” Kayla says, “and I am so glad I got it over the line before we missed out.” After an easy seven-and-a-half-month build, during

which they extensively reworked the existing house, Kayla, Darius and their toddler, Willow, settled into their new home in July 2017. The building process was “smooth sailing”, according to Kayla. “We had Graya Construction involved very early on. You hear so many horror stories, but our build with Graya was an enjoyable experience for us.” Kayla’s work as an ambassador and lifestyle blogger, along with Darius’s football schedule, keeps this family busier than most. Their home functions both as a calming family oasis and a perfect space for entertaining, indoors and out. The building’s design captures plenty of natural light, and its minimal, functional styling choices give it an airy, unfussy elegance. “I love light, lots of glass, and earthy tones with a simple touch of warmth,” Kayla says. The couple chose not to work with an interior designer – Kayla took on the massive job herself. Pragmatic Scandinavian-inspired simplicity is peppered with bohemian flourishes and personal treasures: “I selected all of the finishings, colours, materials, features, and so on. I feel extremely proud to be able to say this home is a complete reflection of me and my personal style.” >

L I V I N G R O O M “The living room is my favourite room in the house. It’s my calm, my Zen space, with copious natural light flooding through from the void and views to the pool. It’s got a warm, whimsical feel when you’re relaxed out on the couch, and entertaining guests. When we open up the sliding doors, the indoors flow seamlessly out to the backyard,” says Kayla. Sofa, armchairs and green cushions from Freedom; cushions on sofa from Onyx & Smoke; elephant print and flowers from White Havana; coffee table from GlobeWest; rug from Tribe Home; pot and stand from Arc & Family.

The living room is the family’s favourite spot. The overhead void floods it with daylight, and the pool behind Kayla’s beloved white sofa (“It’s huge – truly big enough for an entire family”) throws tranquil blue reflections into the space. “We wanted the pool to be in the middle of the house. We love that you’re able to view it from spaces internally,” she explains. A double-height wall in the dining area is home to a painting by American artist Kimberly Rowe. Kayla fell in love with the work after a gallery loaned it to her for a shoot, so she purchased it afterwards. “I am so grateful, because she sits perfectly in our home. It’s a piece I will take with me wherever we go.” For Kayla, the process of styling the home came naturally: “Seeing it all fall into place was very rewarding.” In fact, the entire build was such a smooth experience that the Boyds are keen to do it all over again, in the future. Adds Kayla, “We know we could do another – even smarter and better – next time around.”

K I T C H E N “One of the things we love most about our kitchen and dining, is the natural light. I adore the contrast of our dark cabinets against the wood and white walls,” says Maddy. Statement features in this kitchen include bar stools from Naturally Cane and cabinets painted in Taubmans ‘Black Granite’. Maddy’s husband Ben custom made the bamboo bench tops from Bunnings to fit the cabinets. With the off-cuts he made the floating shelves.

Maddy Evennett has skillfully curated an interior based on her extensive travels, resulting in a personality-packed home that inspires wanderlust and reminiscing over adventures experienced. Rich in natural textures, Maddy has blended the nuances of different cultures into a worldly, well-travelled whole. And while her home is now Instagram-famous (you can follow her at @hutchinson.house), it wasn’t always so. When Maddy and her husband, Ben, purchased the original 1950s house in 2016 as a newly married couple, it was unliveable. “We wanted a house that was going to be a project, and in original condition,” Maddy explains. “The deciding factors of this property were the potential to rebuild and design our dream home, and the location.” It was an ambitious plan that has paid off, thanks to the couple’s skill, perseverance and vision. Structurally, three internal wall changes meant they could create an open-plan kitchen, dining and living area, along with extending the footprint of the bathroom. Consequently the existing kitchen, living room and bathroom were completely demolished and rebuilt. It wasn’t just the design that the couple were responsible for: With the exception of the electrical and plumbing, they got their hands well and truly dirty undertaking all the work themselves – some of which, while Maddy was

Although having lived in Australia for four years, Maddy is originally from the UK, which is where her timeless ‘English’ colour choices of blue and white originate. Meanwhile, an overall neutral palette allows the freshness of her abundant greenery to pop: “It reflects our informal beach lifestyle, and allows the flexibility of experimenting with patterns and colours throughout the changing seasons.” Maddy adds, “Ben and I have travelled for years overseas, >

and although our home is overall neutral and beachy, there is a strong global influence. Many pieces we own are unique and derived from places all over the world – from the Moroccan rugs I handpicked in the Atlas Mountains, to the African Mali mud cloth I chose in a European flea market. I love artwork, ornaments and textiles that tell a story.” Textiles and rugs are a favourite of Maddy, who loves the warmth and character they bring to an interior. She confesses she has a slight addiction to styling (and re-styling!) her shelves, and it’s here that her true design savvy shines with thoughtful vignettes that truly reflect the couple’s shared history. “Ornaments such as baskets, books and everyday objects on display make your home feel personal and lived-in,” says Maddy, “but plants and greenery cut from the garden bring life to any space.” “I think the important thing is to make your house your home,” Maddy concludes. “Let it reflect and be an image of who you are… Let your home tell your story.”

“ The ‘ Tuscan Dawn’ island urite benchtop in the kitchen is my favo feature in the house.”

Even in winter, it rarely gets bitterly cold on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast – yet when designing her home, Hailey McGinty wanted to evoke a sense of hygge (Danish for ‘cosiness’ and comfort’) often associated with coolclimate Scandinavian interiors. “I wanted it to feel like a warm hug when you walked through the door,” she reflects. The key to creating such a look into the subtropics was a cohesive palette of finishes with gentle tones and textures that imbue softness and comfort, in every room. With a love of interiors and innovation, Hailey McGinty and partner Glenn Wilkinson were also keen to create an entirely different feel to their previous home, where black featured heavily – inside and out. “From the outset, I called this place, ‘The White House’. But during the design phase, it actually became more cream, and I managed to sneak in quite a bit of pink,” says Hailey, who’s also the founder of lifestyle and interiors company H&G Designs. After enlisting the expertise of architectural designer Danuza Rogers, the concept for the exterior became ‘Palm Springs’ – with timber-look aluminium walls and breeze-block features, injecting a modernist vibe. To

maximise the compact, narrow block, the house was designed over two floors – rooms for guests on the lower level; the kitchen, living room and master bedroom on the upper floor; plus a spiral staircase leading to a rooftop alfresco area overlooking a nearby canal. Inside, the kitchen set the tone for the surrounding spaces. “I like trying out new materials, and when I was choosing the benchtop, the latest Caesarstone colours had just come out. I fell in love with a shade called ‘Tuscan Dawn’. The moment I saw it, I knew it was ‘it’,” says Hailey. The finish carries from the kitchen to the bathroom vanities, and through to a custom console Glenn made for the entry, using offcuts. As the true heart of the home, it was also important that the kitchen felt very open and inviting, which Hailey admits was a challenge while working with such a compact floor area. The solution was to forgo overhead cabinets in favour of a hidden walk-in pantry, and create a feature splashback that ran to the ceiling. The Rockcote ‘Marrakesh’ render in a custom colour forms a stunning textural backdrop – not only to the kitchen, but also to the adjoined living area, where accessories and > furnishings collect the dreamy beige and blush tones.

K I T C H E N The kitchen feels like a seamless extension of the adjoining living areas: The central island, topped in ‘Tuscan Dawn’ Caesarstone, teams with OZ Design barstools to form a casual spot to eat. To achieve the desired look, Hailey had the tops of the original stools reupholstered in leather-look Warwick fabric. On the wall – a two-tier leather-strap shelf by H&G Designs creates a space to display greenery and OMMO kitchenware.

S T U D Y N O O K Glenn created a multifunctional study nook using an H&G grid board and floating blackbutt timber.

C A L I F O R N I A V I B E S Modern, minimalist breeze-blocks and timber details are teamed with simple succulents and pebbles to channel the ‘Palm Springs’ vibe. To reduce maintenance, the couple opted for an innovative product called Knotwood – aluminium boards which evoke the look and feel of genuine timber. “We opted for the colour, iroko, which tied in with our scheme, while adding warmth to the minimalist façade.”

Below the window, a comfy bench seat is adorned in cushions from Adairs. Art prints from Norsu Interiors and Blacklist; trio of Menu pendants from Designstuff; leather-strap shelf from H&G Designs.

The couple’s familiarity with the building industry and tools inspired a swathe of bespoke elements: The upper balustrade was custom-fabricated in perforated aluminium that was anodised for a soft-gold look – tying in with the brushed, rose gold tapware. Cupboards and drawers feature H&G suede-strap handles, while bedsides are flanked by H&G leather-strap shelves. And to save time and money, Hailey and Glenn laid the white-washed blackbutt timber floor themselves, having family help out when installing the textural Easycraft random profile wall panels. Thrilled with the result, the couple couldn’t be happier with their “creamy-white house”. “Because it’s just Glenn and I, everything we need is on one main level. So it’s really easy living, and has ended up feeling quite cosy and pretty,” says Hailey. What could be better?

I love them juxtaposed next to the solid oak cabinetry and my vintage white ram that I found a few months prior to designing our home. This vintage ram was one of the first sources of inspiration for the home, and I knew he would live in the dining area as soon we started designing,” says Janice.

K I T C H E N With a love for cooking, Janice and Brian naturally wanted a kitchen that was beautiful and modern yet functional and timeless. “It was an important decision to use solid white oak verses veneers to achieve this look,” explains Janice. “It was the only way to really see those deeper grains that were brought out by hand wire brushing each cabinet.”

As the founder of Barta Interiors, Janice Barta has a reputation for refined spaces that reflect a distinct, curatorial eye. With a fresh yet timeless approach, Janice draws on her background – interior architecture and design studies at New York’s Parsons, an internship in Milan, and working at a high-end design firm in NYC – to inspire her. Teaming up with her husband, Brian Tarr of BTC Builders (an upscale residential builder), to create a family home for their two children – 10-year-old Zoe and five-year-old Van – was an ideal situation. “We have worked on several projects together, but we each have jobs that are separate from one another, which creates balance in our lives,” Janice explains. “We are both good at different components of our jobs, and as a result, the projects run more efficiently because we both are confident in our positions.”

during this time period, and there is something about the clean architectural lines that I love, that isn’t too stark or modern,” says Janice. “There is a sense of warmth and familiarity, and that was what we strived to achieve when we built our home.” Janice believes the casual aspect of the California lifestyle translates well into the region’s interiors, claiming they feel easy-going and yet still “put together”. Meanwhile, she feels it is imperative to incorporate outdoor living into home designs, in order to take advantage of California’s amazing weather. For this reason, she included a stunning cactus garden on the roof of her reclaimed, brick home. Working with 3,600 square feet, the project took around 10 months from when the plans were drawn up, to the completion of the job – an impressive feat, considering the meticulous attention to detail Janice poured into every design decision.

Tapping into their shared love for mid-century design, the couple focused on creating interesting architectural elements as a backdrop for their curatorial, modern design aesthetic. In the process, they established a contemporary yet warm family home.

For example, Janice felt strongly about integrating the post and beam aspect into the architecture. She also had tongue and groove ceilings implemented throughout, while maintaining the floor-to-ceiling windows in order to accentuate this detail.

“I’ve always been fascinated with the work of Cliff May, (Richard) Neutra, and Frank Lloyd Wright. When I moved to California, there was so much architecture being built

This room overlooks our landscaped courtyard and it truly makes us happy.”

The couple have also chosen a mix of retro and custom furniture pieces from famed designers – including an AERIN coffee table in the living room, a Jean-Louis Deniot table in the office, Baker bedside tables, and Danish Moller dining chairs. For Janice, however, it is the open-plan kitchen/ family area that makes her heart sing: “It is a fabulous room – with floor-to-ceiling windows facing our courtyard – that gets the most amazing light, in the morning. M A S T E R B E D R O O M “ We made custom pillows from Walter G fabrics in a sharp, deep indigo and paired with vintage teak lamps on a textured black lacquer and brass side table. We wanted the room light and airy, yet remain private and intimate,” says Janice.

B A T H R O O M Brian and Janice found inspiration for the bathroom early on when they found the slab of marble. “Knowing we were using rich wood tones and clean white accents, we knew we wanted a marble that exuded the same feeling. The warm greys, browns, creamy whites and taupe colours were a perfect complement to the rest of the plan,” says Janice.

V I N T A G E F L A I R “ We sourced reclaimed brick so the exterior had a vintage feel,” explains Janice. “We designed the gardens and selected all of the plants. One of my favourite things I designed were these black metal planters at the front of our home with huge agave plants overflowing with succulents.”
