THE

EDITION

Ah, summer is here at last – my favourite season. Give me searing heat over blistering cold any day of the week. When the weather warms up, I love to spend time outside in my courtyard, always imagining the possibilities if I had a larger space to work with. If you’ve found yourself in the situation where you need inspiration for your exterior – n0 matter how big or how small – definitely check out our outdoor feature from page 27, filled with lush and leafy spaces. Speaking of leafy, how gorgeous is our front cover home (pictured opposite)? The star of this all-white kitchen has to be that stunning glass splashback looking out to the vertical garden. Homeowner Kristy Gordon has embraced greenery throughout her cheerful abode, and to stunning effect. Pops of soft blue feature throughout, and funnily enough, it seems all of our home tours in this edition feature the colour in all its glorious shades: Whether it’s deep navies, bright turquoise or dusty duck-egg blues, blue really is the colour of summer – and I just adore it. I hope wherever you’re reading this issue – whether at the beach, by the pool, or simply inside in the air conditioning – you’re enjoying your summer and the upcoming holiday

MEET THE MAKER

Thomas Wilson and Bianca Lambert

Friends and family are at the heart of a new collection by Melbourne duo Capra Designs. PHOTOGRAPHY EVE WILSON / WORDS CASEY HUTTON

Bianca Lambert and Thomas Wilson launched Capra Designs – creating resin vessels and wire plant stands and hangers – in 2015, when their son was just one-month-old. “Back in the early days, you could find me running out to the studio to make pots while Banjo slept, or packing boxes while breastfeeding,” Bianca recalls. Banjo is so much a part of Capra Designs that he now has a pot named after him – and it’s one of Bianca’s current favourites. “It’s so simple and classic, yet effective from a design and functionality point-of-view,” she says of the ‘Banjo’ pot, whose distinctive plinth is also a drip tray, so that people can water their plants indoors. For their latest collection, ‘Rocky Road’, the couple has honed their products – extending their designs and adding new twists to old favourites. The result is a unified body of work with repeated motifs in the form of modernist shapes, brushed

brass accents, clean lines, and playful pops of colour. ‘Rocky Road’ takes its name from their debut table linen range, the result of a collaboration with close friend and textile designer Anna Sassi. “I love the way we bounce off each other creatively,” Bianca says. Conceived with the festive season in mind, Rocky Road’s tasselled flourishes and layers of texture, colour and pattern call to mind laidback celebrations – and delicious desserts – with loved ones. And it’s love that’s allowed Capra Designs to thrive. Juggling parenthood, partnership and business can be challenging but, Bianca explains, her cooperative relationship with Thomas and their shared aesthetic is what makes it possible. “We also have a very supportive extended family – it takes a tribe!”

STORE PROFILE

Not long after Grason Kira left his desk job to design furniture full-time, he was asked to build a credenza for a friend. “Everyone loved it,” his wife, Simone Kira, recalls. So, he made another. And another – and soon was rolling in interior projects across Sydney, Melbourne and the Gold Coast. “After much research and identifying a gap in the market for quality furniture that was produced locally at accessible pricing, we knew expanding to a retail space was the next step,” Simone says. Two years later in 2014, Simone “escaped” her corporate job to join her husband in opening their Miami-based retail space, Kira & Kira – named after Grason’s mid-century-meets-modern-inspired furniture collection that grew from his best-selling credenzas, both sold in-store.

materials that are sustainably sourced, to create pieces that are timeless and (long-lasting).” Kira & Kira also remain committed to supporting the growth of Australian designers and artisans by stocking complementing pieces from local craftspeople and brands including Armadillo&Co, Design Twins and Ahoy Trader.

“They’re well-designed pieces – functional and non-fussy,” says Simone, who leads store operations. “We’re drawn to simple, clean lines that stand the test of time.”

But the best part about running Kira & Kira? Customer satisfaction, Simone confirms: “Designing pieces people will love and treasure for years to come.”

Furthermore, Kira & Kira furnishings are not only reasonably priced, but also made-to-order by Grason in his Burleigh Heads workshop using earthfriendly design practices. Adds Simone: “Our design philosophy has always been to use exceptional

“I DESIGNED THE BREEZE BLOCK WALL TO CREATE A DURABLE SCREEN THAT WAS PRIVATE AND SECURE...”

Breezy

CO U R T YA R D

PHOTOGRAPHY JODY D'ARCY / WORDS JACQUI GREIG STYLING LISA QUINN-SCHOFIELD

“With the unusual request to blend garden styles, we came up with the ‘Spamtons’ design (Spanish-meetsHamptons), which somehow came together perfectly in the end,” says landscape designer Ascher Smith. Perth homeowners Freddy and Jenn Hollow were looking for a relaxed garden with plenty of lush greenery that would be an extension of the living area. Key factors to be included were grass and a sandpit for their children. “The kids love playing outside, and our dream was to be able to provide them with a space that would allow them to grow and learn independence, but also be safe,” explains Freddy.

OUTDOOR SPACES “The front garden is exposed to full summer sun, so we recreated the tropical style using a carefully selected mix of exotic and native species that are suited to our Perth climate,” says Ascher.

Marimekko ‘Veljekset’ cushion cover $39.50 finnishdesignshop.com

The use of breeze blocks allowed the creation of a private courtyard for the family, with large alfresco, in-built seating; lawn and sandpit. “I designed the breeze block wall to create a durable screen that was private and secure, offering sun shading, weather protection and ventilation – and it just happened to have the added bonus of being highly patterned with geometric ornament,” says Ascher, who appreciates that breeze blocks have the ability to manipulate different degrees of solidity and permeability, openness and enclosure. As a finishing touch, Ascher scoured nurseries and antique stores to find older, clay-looking pots, which she gave a Mediterranean makeover by painting them in Bauwerk lime wash ‘Bright White’ – creating the perfect ‘Spamtons’ garden!

“WE SPEND MOST OF OUR SPARE TIME IN THE WARMER MONTHS HANGING POOLSIDE AMONG OUR COLLECTION OF BEAUTIFUL, BOLD CACTI, AND OUR MANY PALM TREES.”

Tropical DECK

PHOTOGRAPHY LOUISE ROCHE, VILLA STYLING / WORDS CASEY HUTTON

For Ashleigh and Ben Keily, relaxing at home in inner-city Brisbane is all about being outdoors. “We spend most of our spare time in the warmer months hanging poolside among our collection of beautiful, bold cacti, and our many palm trees. We love sitting and watching the kids play on our deck, which is also surrounded by large cacti and lush plants,” says Ashleigh.

When renovating their pool area, they took the tropical Californian vibe created by their mature palm trees and ran with it, adding potted greenery and laidback boho furnishings against a whitewashed timber backdrop. Pot plants are a way of life for Ashleigh and Ben. As owners of Arc + Family, they design and hand-paint

“We wanted to dedicate an area to our pots, of course,” Ashleigh explains. “So why not elevate it, and have it seen from every angle?” The result is their custom-made “pot deck” – a platform overlooking the pool that showcases a magnificent collection of plants in their favourite pots. “It gets hit with the perfect amount of sun for our cacti and succulents. You can see it from every angle of our outdoor space, which is what we were going for,” she says, adding, “It was pretty breathtaking when we finished it.” Ashleigh points out that the the pot deck is also a practical solution for a family with two small children and a couple of dogs – a separate platform means fewer unfortunate run-ins with spiky plants!

“I SIMPLY WANTED THE BEAUTY I’D FALLEN IN LOVE WITH IN GREECE, AROUND ME EVERY DAY.”

Norwegian

PA R A D I S E

PHOTOGRAPHY SONJA OLSEN / WORDS JACQUI GREIG

Even with a decidedly Scandinavian aesthetic, Norway-based Sonja Olsen has created an outdoor oasis redolent with Mediterranean charm. It was while travelling through Greece and the Cyclades that Sonja fell in love with Mediterranean architecture, and with her garden in need of an upgrade, she fell back on her holiday for inspiration: “I simply wanted the beauty I’d fallen in love with in Greece, around me every day.” With a base of traditional Norwegian wood flooring, Sonja has introduced smooth, white stone walls; palms and grape vines; and a pergolastyle roof – all inspired by her travels. 32

adore home

OUTDOOR SPACES Living on the west coast of Norway, which is typically cold and rainy for much of the year, she has also opted for a glass roof and fireplace to ensure she can optimise time spent outdoors.

IKEA ‘Borrby’ lantern for block candle $19.99 ikea.com.au

Carefully chosen wicker furniture highlights the crisp, white colour palette, which is nicely complemented by lush greenery. Sonja admits her preference for subtropical plants can be a challenge with her climate, but she has cleverly managed to incorporate several types of palms, a banana plant and grape vines. “I love big, green leaves – and most of the plants are without flowers. When flowers are due, I mostly get white ones,” she explains. “And I hope the grape vine will climb along pillars and the roof after a few seasons.” The pared-back simplicity of the outdoor space speaks volumes for Sonja’s sophisticated sense of design, and is as livable as it is beautiful – merging two distinct design styles into one delightfully inviting space.

ARTIST PROFILE

In one way or another, Kate Fisher has always been in the business of lifting spirits. Kate started her first business – running children’s parties and events – when she was just 19. Fifteen years and two children later, time-poor and longing for a more creative life, she changed direction. “I started painting with no idea where it would lead. Six months later, I opened my online art store – and a few months after that, I sold my event business,” she explains. Passionate about styling, Kate modelled her art business with an eye for interiors. She sells original artworks as well as high-quality prints of her works, and she’s available for commissions. A firm believer in the emotional power of art, she loves the process of painting and hopes that, in turn, > her works bring joy to other people.

When it comes to choosing art for one’s home, Kate says a common mistake is to buy work that is too small for a space. Go big when you can, she says, but if you’re buying small pieces, “group them together with likeminded friends, or they can look awkward and out of place”. Hanging art above your bed or sofa? The width of your artwork should be at least two-thirds of the width of the furniture below it. “That’s usually at least 110cm wide, so if you can’t afford an original that big, two 60x90cm prints in frames hung side by side are a great alternative.” If your artwork has no furniture below it, Kate advises hanging it so the centre of the work is at eye level. Above all, she says, “buy artwork you love – things that make your soul smile!” Sage advice, indeed.

“A holiday home needs to make you feel like you are home from the moment your walk in the door – nothing too precious, yet a home that makes you smile,” says Simone Mathews. Little did she know, she’d soon have one of her own – after visiting the sleepy, coastal town of Gerringong for a friend’s birthday. There, Simone discovered one of the area’s original farmhouses, which she quickly decided she would acquire and renovate. “Once we stepped inside, we fell in love with the character – and especially the original flooring, which we have kept and reinstalled into the barn,” she says. Together with her builder husband, Simone restored the original front section of the farmhouse and added a new extension to the rear. Simone freely admits she was her own worst client, with her interior design expertise affording her a plethora of design and style options: “My biggest challenge was sticking to the plan!” That plan – Simone’s interior brief – was to create a holiday home that paid homage to the character of the old farmhouse, while adding a modern, coastal feel. The laidback lifestyle of Gerringong was a major influence of styling decisions. “We didn’t want the house to be too

precious,” she recalls. “We wanted it to be the type of home where you can still have sand between your toes.” This relaxed aesthetic was complemented by Simone’s preference for bright and open spaces. She chose to use a warm white – Dulux Natural White – on the walls, and a crisp white on the ceilings – Dulux Vivid White: “I wanted white walls to create a light home, yet I didn’t want it to feel too cold. The combination of the two whites has worked perfectly.” The white palette contrasts beautifully with the depth of the black oak flooring, which, in turn, complements the dark stone in the fireplace.

R U S T I C F I R E P L A C E The original stone fireplace is the hero of the house and adds character and charm to the living area.

S I T T I N G N O O K Adjacent to the living room is a cosy sitting nook – the perfect spot for relaxing. Coffee table from GlobeWest; rug from Freedom; framed print from Art and Framing Co.

Clearly a hero of the home, the fireplace had the render chipped off to reveal the original stone, with the couple sourcing additional stone from the grounds of the home, as well as a friend’s local farm. Another stunning statement within the interior – the raked ceilings in the kitchen and the guest rooms. “We love playing with drama in the ceilings. It adds a feeling of more space and creates an amazing design element,” says Simone. “The guestrooms were not planned to have the pitched ceilings, but we just couldn’t help ourselves. And we are so glad we did.” >

With four guestrooms in the farmhouse, an additional two-bedroom cabana, plus a selfcontained barn (not to mention the seven bathrooms and a powder room), Simone has definitely flexed her creative muscle in creating a classic coastal, design-driven home, that abounds in natural textures and is genuinely liveable. “When we purchased the property, we had so many options for the house – make it our forever home, restore and sell, or keep as a holiday house,” says Simone. “Luckily, the holiday house won, and we now have named the home, ‘Soul of Gerringong’.”

Fancy staying at Soul of Gerringong? This laid-back holiday accommodation includes seven guest rooms in the Farmhouse, Cabana and Barn starting from $1000 per night for 14 guests. If you want to book in for only two people, each month Soul opens its doors to bookings per room.

RENOVATOR'S

F R O N T D O O R “The first thing that we changed was the external paint colour,” says Kristy. The front door painted in Dulux’s ‘Aquanamel’ creates a welcoming entrance. Potted plant from Into The Wild.

K I T C H E N “I have a true obsession with greenery, explains Kristy. “That kitchen window was screaming out for a vertical garden behind it – I didn’t want to have a normal style splashback in our kitchen.” Bar stools from Arranmore Furniture; pendant lights from Fenton & Fenton; plants from Into The Wild.

When Kristy Gordon purchased her home in Melbourne’s Elsternwick almost a decade ago, she spent a few years working out what it was she wanted to change before embarking on a major renovation – that just so happened to double as her first project as a freelance interior and property stylist for Lady Marmalade Styling. Kristy says that while she was lucky to purchase the home in its near original condition, there were a few things that she couldn’t wait to change – namely, the exterior paint colour (army green with a bright yellow door), fence and front garden – in order to add street appeal. For Kristy, it was important to keep the exterior of the house in line with its century-plus provenance and heritage listing. Then, when it came time to making serious changes, Kristy had already formed a clear vision of what she wanted, and it became a simple case of putting plans into action. According to Kristy, the renovation process took about 10 months and was fairly straightforward, thanks to the help of her reliable builders, Adbuild. “I wanted a space that was open, functional, simple and timeless – perfect for family life and entertaining – with all rooms flowing into one another and exuding a similar feel. The ability to open up to the outdoor space in warmer months and connect the main living space to the outdoors, where the kids spend most of their time, is a great benefit,”

*

“You can easily change the feel of a room with colour – blues being my favourite...”

Kristy says. It is not surprising that the kitchen is the where the heart of Kristy’s home can be found, being the central point which connects the rest of the living space. Admitting to an obsession with greenery, Kristy wanted to bring the outdoors in and for the garden to be as visible as possible, while capturing lots of natural light. Kristy says the kitchen window was screaming out for a vertical garden and, in her determination not to have an ordinary splashback, designed her own glass window view of lush greenery. As for the bathrooms, Kristy says they needed to be as luxurious as possible – with plenty of space and storage, while keeping a minimalist edge to which she could add a pop of colour, when styling. In keeping with her desire to stay with a simple modern palette, Kristy opted for CDK Stone limestone tiles, which were applied floor-to-ceiling, > for a timeless effect.

indoor/outdoor connection

O P E N - P L A N L I V I N G Kristy’s open-plan living, dining and kitchen flow seamlessly through to the outdoor space, with views out to the lush, leafy surrounds. Dining table and chairs from Arranmore Furniture; rug from Arro Home; pink bowl from Mud; plants from Into The Wild; sofa from King Living.

Asked to choose the favourite elements of her home, Kristy says she loves the contrast of the dark wooden floors against the simple white walls and cabinetry used throughout the home: “You can easily change the feel of a room with colour – blues being my favourite – while adding timber accents and plant life for a softening effect.” While Kristy applied much thought and attention to the inside of her home, the outside commanded just as much respect in her aim to create a welcoming sanctuary and entertaining space. The result is a lively, low-maintenance garden that cleverly blends a timber deck with faux lawn and abundant plant life – the pièce de résistance being a beautifully eye-catching and clever vertical garden, comprising two bespoke circular planters designed by Kristy and made by her gardener.

“Life changing” is the way Kirsten Thompson of GlobeWest describes the rewards of a major renovation that turned her mid1940s, Melbourne family home into a thoroughly modern haven. PHOTOGRAPHY ANNETTE O'BRIEN / STYLING ALANA LANGAN / WORDS PIP MILLER

HOME TOUR

O U T D O O R A R E A Kirsten’s husband Brett, worked closely with architect Adrian Kucyk to plan out the compact outdoor area. “We were able to retain most of the existing deck, and they chose natural Bluestone to complement the house exterior,” explains Kirsten. “My mum Rosalie has a green thumb and amazing creative flair and has been integral in the garden and planter designs.” All outdoor furniture from GlobeWest; umbrella from Basil Bangs; cushions, towels and inflatable swan from Fenton & Fenton.

After purchasing their Highett, Melbourne, home in 2004, Kirsten Thompson and her husband, Brett, spent the next decade making gradual improvements before demolishing 30 percent of the existing building and embarking on significant remodelling to the remaining floorplan, while adding a pool and spa.

functional,” says Kirsten. “And with essentially the same footprint, we now have an additional bathroom, separate lounge, and generous study that has become a functional home office. Outside, we now have three areas set at different levels, where people can all hang together or enjoy quiet relaxation.”

According to Kirsten, their home renovation was a massive undertaking that took nine months to complete – and a further six months to finish the landscaping.

Thanks to the renovation, the house is now perfect for entertaining, according to Kirsten: “We always loved having family and friends over, but now, lunches have become long afternoons and often dinners. We joke about how no one ever leaves, but we actually love it.”

Having interpreted their brief to create a home that was “open and conversational, making the outdoor areas and swimming pool focal points”, Kirsten says the architect, Adrian Kucyk, was creative in approach, while interior stylist Kirstin Sweet took great care of the fixtures and finishes (with all furniture, naturally from GlobeWest). From a structural perspective, Kirsten says the original building required work to a number of areas. They were pleased to follow their architect’s suggestion of using vertical black cladding as a distinctive style element, which would create an interesting contrast and relationship between old and new. Changes included the introduction of two outdoor entertainment spaces – seamlessly connecting home and garden – while the master bedroom took on a new persona with the addition of a luxurious ensuite and considerably larger wardrobe space. “It’s not a big house, but the floor plan is super

64

adore home

She adds, “Our architect, Adrian, was a great listener. I really believe him knowing us and our lifestyle is one of the reasons what he has done – on a modest budget – has had such a profound impact on our lives.” Inside, the home was given a minimalist albeit contemporary feel – thanks to the assistance of interior stylist Kirstin Sweet, who worked together with the homeowner to create a relaxed and light ambience with the finishings. “We were keen to use a lot of light timbers on the floors, joinery and furniture, to counterbalance the minimalist façade with dark timber window frames,” the homeowner explains. “Because the rooms aren’t huge, we went for pale fabrics and higher legs on the sofas, and have used a lot of white finishes and white marbles to keep it light > and airy.”

HOME TOUR

When it came to adding colour, Kirsten says she has always been drawn to blues and greens due to their calming effect – the perfect antidote to their sometimes hectic work and family life. “The large-scale artwork by Ngaio Lenz in the main living space probably was also a bit of a conduit,” Kirsten says. “I used the colours in Ngaio’s piece to inspire the rug, cushions and throws. Now, I find that even when I update them, I don’t stray too far from the soft mints, pale blues, navy and turquoise.” As the heart of this family’s home, the kitchen was designed by their architect to link the old and new, creating a transition point from the existing house to the new living space. “Previously the kitchen was closed off, so we wanted to open it up to our living areas,” Kirsten says. “It’s cleverly positioned to receive north sunlight, and has views to the outdoor living and pool. I worked with our stylist on the finishes, and love how the European oak floorboards wrap up into the benchtop, and the combination of white stone benchtops and dark overhanging cupboards. Kirstin also ensured we used quality fixtures and fittings, including Blum door and drawer closers, which make a big difference to the day-to-day.” How to achieve a home like Kirsten’s? “I strongly recommend engaging an architect and/ or an interior design professional when renovating,” she says. “I think people don’t realise how affordable it can be, and what a fabulous investment it is.”

R E L A X E D D I N I N G The large scale artwork by Ngaio Lenz sits between the dining and kitchen, helping to link both zones. “I had been looking for months for an artwork, and was talking to our local framer Hass about how it was a big decision, a major investment and hopefully would be forever. Hass showed me some of Ngaio’s pieces awaiting collection for her exhibition. I immediately fell in love with the layered effect, colours and shapes, recalls Kirsten. BUILD From gloomy bungalow to lightdrenched dream home: The duo behind BuildHer Collective share the tricks of their trade from their latest Northcote project – with spectacular results. PHOTOGRAPHY DYLAN LARK, ASPECT 11 / WORDS PIP MILLER

With more than 14 years of construction industry experience, entrepreneur Rebeka Morgan is one half of BuildHer Collective, which was created with Kribashini Hannon, to help women build. In this latest project, Rebeka says their client was typical in that she had a vision, but found the whole building process daunting. According to Rebeka, BuildHer Collective, in partnership with builders Beirin Projects, were able to step in and manage every step, including checking the site for suitability, engaging architects Bellemo and Cat, overseeing construction and providing advice on the selection of finishes and fixtures. “With Buildher Collective taking care of every detail from concept to completion, we were able to play with new heights, pitched ceilings and angled windows, worked with new materials, like asphalt shingles and a new concrete mix for the polished floor,” Rebeka says. For this particular project, they were dealing with an older-style, double-brick home with small windows – heritage features that they needed to preserve, while creating a lighter, brighter domain that made full use of the block’s northerly aspect and surrounding trees. From a design perspective, the client now has the benefit of a well-connected house, with views from the front of the home through to the back, and to the top master bedroom. In BuildHer’s signature style, they added a second entrance to the home, which allows friends and family to enter in an informal manner, thereby creating a feeling of being welcomed into the inner fold. While drenching the home with light and creating a seamless transition from indoor to outdoor living areas, the project commanded particular attention in various > areas of the house, which naturally included the kitchen. >

REBEKA MORGAN

In terms of kitchen statements, Rebeka cites custom cabinetry made from limed American oak. BuildHer also spent time creating just the right texture for the island bench, which was paired with Grey Tundra marble, for a stunning result. In the living and dining room, they opted for versatile, polished concrete floors in Alpine Ice Ash, complete with the luxury of underfloor heating. “It is really important to get a good mix of concrete – free from impurities – for the best impact. Once it is poured, there is no changing the slab, so there is always a lot of anticipation to see how it will look once it is polished,” says Rebeka. The light, airy tones of this home were highlighted with a calming, neutral colour palette, while limiting the number of materials and textured finishes, for a cohesive and classic look throughout. “We used Haymes Paint’s ‘Moon and Stars’ in the front of the house and upstairs extension, to give a

bit of depth,” says Rebeka. The master ensuite is another stroke of genius, with its natural blend of Grey Tundra marble, Fibonacci Stone terrazzo tiles and American oak, plus the addition of black leather handles that is simultaneously soothing and statement-making. The hero piece of this room is without question the oversized oval mirror from Café Culture + Insitu, which Rebeka says they fell in love with, and looks even better in person. “We also had fun staining up our own timber colours – using a navy for the American oak stairs that changes colours in different lights, while introducing fabric panels to soften the modern extension and its huge angled windows,” she says.

STAY The TRIBE Perth hotel boards to the beat of its own unique, modern interior: Designed with artsy lounge accents both polished and practical, it perfectly accommodates the need to relax or rejuvenate – whether you’re a working traveller or weekend jet-setter. A standout palette of exposed concrete surfaces, natural stone finishes, and bold colour is only the beginning of what this sophisticated haven entails, all thanks to Melbourne-based Travis Walton Architecture. The gallery-inspired ground floor encourages both kicking back and connecting through a flowing series of ‘installed’ spaces, separated only by understated joinery. The design encapsulates an open-plan reception and social/work area, along with an all-day refreshment space with a six-metre, inlaid stone workbench; complementing bar tables; and candy-coated, plush seating. Chic spotlighting

throughout showcases the space for the masterpiece that it is. The ultra sleek sentiment continues into the 126 rooms, where we meet the luxe of our lives in its artful simplicity. Think floor-to-ceiling windows, inlaid stone finishes, and sleek, concealed storage. Black plays the ultimate punctuator – from the smart wall shelving to the monochrome-cool bathroom. Wherever the TRIBE takes you, there’s just no escaping the opulent charm: Even the hallways beg a mention, with their moody mirrored walls, blade lighting and digital print carpet.

DETAILS

Says Travis Walton, director at Travis Walton Architecture, “I really connected with TRIBE’s idea of redefining what ‘luxury’ actually means to the modern traveller…I feel we have achieved our intention.” We couldn’t agree more.

STAY It makes perfect sense for a hotel – a place for travellers and adventurers – to celebrate the stories of the people who make up its history. And Tasmania’s newest accommodation option has capitalised on the rich and captivating history: The MACq 01 Hotel in Hobart goes beyond mere historical interpretation to become an immersive storytelling accommodation. Guests are engaged in the historical narrative by clever design development from a Sydney-based, boutique agency of interior designers – Pike Withers – whose objective was to create curiosity and intrigue. The agency created a backdrop of relaxed luxury where guests can absorb the character stories of Tasmania, creating a deeper understanding and more meaningful connection to their destination. One hundred fourteen characters who have each influenced the evolution of Tasmanian culture are

celebrated within each of the 114 rooms and suites. There, guests learn the story of a separate character through a unique illustration on the door, and artifacts relating to that character, inside. In addition to impressive views over the vast River Derwent and of magnificent Mount Wellington, MACq 01 features The Story Bar, Old Wharf Restaurant and an atmospheric lounge – all renowned as excellent locations for eating and drinking out. However, the most standout point of difference is arguably the appointment of the Master Storyteller and his team of full-time storytellers. These talented professionals take guests not only on an engaging journey through the MACq 01 Hotel, but also on adventures throughout the Hobart waterfront and beyond.

STAY If you’re going to stay in a world-iconic city like Sydney, why not luxe it up in traditional Australian style at Spicers Potts Point? A trio of terrace houses dating back to 1873, the opulent 20-room accommodation is situated in the lively urban village of Potts Point, celebrated for its classic art deco architecture and best-loved restaurants, cafes and shops. Spicers Potts Point is all about providing wall-to-wall luxury in a home-away-from-home setting, while taking the idea of sanctuary to historic proportions. The guestrooms combine heritage features such as marble fireplaces, high ceilings and timber floors, with modern beds (custom-built), seating, baths and showers – ensuring sophisticated comfort at every turn. The calming neutral palette of limewashed bisques, bleached oaks and gold accents is

a perfect match, only to be awakened by the vibrant underwater artwork of Martine Emdur – a wink to Australia’s coastal lifestyle. The expansive rooms are all thanks to a recent threestorey extension to the original property, which also allowed for a revitalised reception bar and garden courtyard. The reception bar, while chic and pristine with contemporary dining surfaces and coastline blue seating, emits the kind of relaxed indulgence found while noshing with friends: Complimentary canapes and cocktails, anyone? The garden courtyard, meanwhile, allows guests to bask over breakfast in an airy, white-washed backdrop of hanging pot plants and artfully cush seating. Indeed, when it comes to laidback luxe – Spicers Potts Point is history in the making.

ASCOT VALE’S NEW NO. 19 Following the success of their first café (St. Rose), Domenic and Diana Caruso recently opened No. 19 – a sophisticated yet welcoming eatery – to Ascot Vale, Melbourne. The venue pairs simple and honest food with a beautiful interior designed by local creative studio Biasol. Inspired by the delicatessens that once flourished around Melbourne in the 1950s, No. 19 features high ceilings, a predominantly concrete interior with brass accents, and contemporary furnishings.
