The entrepreneurial spirit has always been alive inside me. I think even as a kid I knew someday I’d be running my own business. My dad, a self-employed house painter, probably inspired my dream of working for myself. He was (and still is) a bit of an ‘ideas man’. In true The Castle style he would always be dreaming up grand business schemes. First it was a pie van. But it was no ordinary pie van – no siree! There were salmon pies and even lobster sandwiches on the menu.

“ 4

Don’t let the fear of failure discourage you – no one learns anything unless they’re prepared to fail first.

adore home

After the pie van almost blew him up with a gas leak, he turned his hand to owning an ice cream van. Much to our horror, he would drop my sister and I at school with ‘The Chicken Dance’ blasting from the speakers, delighting our friends. The kids would go nuts for it, all doing the chicken dance as the van tore down the school driveway. Having an ice cream man as our dad made us the envy of our friends, who assumed we ate ice cream every night (we didn’t!) . Years passed, and after ploughing his old 1950s ice cream van into a fence when the brakes failed on a steep hill (and still serving kids ice cream after they’d

witnessed his near-death experience), he decided to get back to what he knew best – painting. The point is, my dad never lost his passion for dreaming. There were plenty more business ideas over the years. Sure, some of his crazy concepts didn’t last long, but he gave them a red-hot go. And that’s what I would encourage you to do if you find yourself dreaming up big ideas. I had two failed business attempts before starting Adore. Don’t let the fear of failure discourage you – no one learns anything unless they’re prepared to fail first. And who knows? With hard work, passion and perseverance, success may come your way. I hope our work spaces feature gives you inspiration on how to set up your own dream home office and that, if a career in interiors is what you’re craving, you find pearls of wisdom from the five talents we’ve featured in this issue.

Stylist and photographer Nicola Greenaway believes there’s an opportunity to make anything beautiful. Her compact, artful work station is no exception. Like many entrepreneurial mums, Nicola Greenaway’s work happens right in the thick of family life. Her beautiful office nook is in her home’s living room. “I like being in the main space and not locked away from all the action,” explains Nicola, who has her own styling and photography business. “I get as much as I can done when the kids are at kindy and the light is good, and I edit images after their

bedtime, often until late at night.” Nicola favours the clean lines and light timbers of Danish design, and she and her husband are also passionate DIY makers. Her desk is a door from Bunnings they attached to the wall and painted white, with IKEA drawers beneath it. The shelves above house stationery essentials (“HAY and kikki.K are my go-tos”) and favourite objects. “I appreciate good design and objects that thought and care have gone into,” she says. “My husband made the timber cross for me, there are pics of us I love, and the rest are little gifts from the people that know me best.”

Decluttering was the first step in the office revamp of Los Angeles stylist and content creator Amy Kim, whose streamlined space is an oasis of minimalist order.

Before redesigning your work space, advises Amy, start with decluttering – how else will you know what kind of functionality you need? “Plus, it’s

In between dashing around town sourcing materials for projects, Amy writes from a desk in her living room, so her design had to complement her decor while providing a comfortable place to work. For her, storage is everything. “Shelving above and next to the desk saves space and helps me store props and supplies, while also allowing me to decoratively display those items.” Her generously proportioned desk gives her plenty of surface area to work with and has built-in drawers and filing cabinets. The result of her overhaul is a zone that’s pristine and orderly, but with plenty of interesting accents to keep inspiration flowing. The monochrome palette fits with Amy’s aesthetic, acting as a bridge to the rest of the room, and elements like her little black-and-white alarm clock and trailing greenery add playful touches to the space.

Missy Ulmer’s bright office space strikes the perfect balance between efficiency and whimsy – we feel organised and inspired just looking at it. Orange County style blogger Missy Ulmer confesses that when she first started blogging she worked mostly on a laptop in bed, then graduated to the kitchen counter. As she got busier, it became clear that she needed a dedicated work area. Having converted a small, underused kids’ playroom into an office, she’s now reaping the rewards. “I can’t tell you how much more productive I’ve been. It’s crazy!” Missy worked remotely with e-designers House of Jade

Interiors on the transformation, and says the process was smooth and rewarding. “E-design is often more affordable and you aren’t limited to your local area.” Her new office is as smart and flexible as it is beautiful. Generous built-in shelves and cabinets display inspiring books and treasures while hiding away paperwork (and remaining toys!). Large baskets add texture and double as storage vessels, and brass accents and natural tones create a warm, personalised atmosphere. The room is anchored by a huge timber desk and a showstopping blue velvet chair (“literally the chair of my dreams”), while a rolling ladder adds fun and romance to the space.

ARCHER INTERIORS Aimee Tarulli, founder of Archer Interiors, reveals how her journey from advertising to interiors helped her discover her true stylist self. Sometimes it takes a whole other career to lead you to where you’re meant to work – and this was especially true for Aimee Tarulli, stylist and founder of Melbournebased Archer Interiors. Long before Aimee went from interiors enthusiast to interior stylist, she managed fashion/retail brands at an advertising agency. After ten years as a senior account director, however, she reached a turning point while on maternity leave with her son. “While I loved being a new mum, I was dying to throw myself into a creative outlet.” “Aimee had previously worked across the specification and decoration of two townhouses with her husband Frank, who owns Thomas Archer Homes. After styling the townhouse that would be their family home – and having it featured in Home Beautiful magazine in 2015 –

the styling requests came rolling in.” As Aimee began freelancing with Thomas Archer while decorating for clients in her spare time, Archer Interiors “organically” came to be. Working predominately on full-home decoration gigs with Archer Interiors and as a consultant with Thomas Archer, Aimee employs a “minimalismmeets-luxury” aesthetic. “I love designing homes that are functional and practical but have a real sense of sophistication,” says Aimee. “I mix furniture from high-end designers with middle-of-the-road pieces that stand the test of a busy family.” In a fun nod to her advertising past, Aimee has also been styling social video and photographic content for brands like King Living, Carpet Court, WK Quantum Quartz, Brickworks Limited and Made by Storey. In fact, after years of organising commercials and shoots, Aimee admits that she has advertising to thank for educating her on the business side of interiors. She also credits her former career for teaching her the power of quality photography in elevating her brand. Driven by these learnings and a creative heart, Aimee successfully opened the door to the best career change she could have made.

OH EIGHT

OH NINE From taking photos to taking the interiors world by storm – Tarina Lyell, founder of Perth-based Oh Eight Oh Nine, tells us how she did it. Tarina Lyell always had an eye for photography. Little did she know, her talent for capturing beauty on camera would grow into a career creating beautiful interiors. The photographer, interior decorator and stylist began pursuing her first love, photography, in high school. But, after entering Perth’s Edith Cowan University, her focus soon broadened from photo media to interiors. “A lot of my electives overlapped with interior design, 34

and my lecturer encouraged me to explore this path,” explains Tarina, who was also working at a furniture retailer at the time. Tarina’s new direction would land her a full-time position as an interior design consultant with Guest Group, decorating and installing display homes. After her son Chet was born, she reconsidered fulltime work. “Having my son motivated me to give ‘working for myself’ a crack. I loved working for a firm, but wanted flexibility to stay home and be with him a while longer.” So, Tarina established her own company, Oh Eight Oh Nine, granting her time with Chet and the opportunity to transform interiors for various clients. Her “pristine” modern design aesthetic incorporates “lots of texture, so the overall feel is warm and inviting”. While adorning display homes for Homebuyers Centre WA is the bulk of her business, Tarina also redesigns

private homes. Such work has cultivated her fondness for decorating children’s spaces.

And Tarina’s photography talent is anything but a memory when it comes to work. “Once install and styling is complete, I take the imagery and usually promote it on social media.” With an impressive 309,000 followers and counting, Tarina credits Instagram – her “digital portfolio” – for much of her success, as it enables her to easily upload content and engage with other designers, clients and suppliers. Her advice to those with similar career aspirations? “Be patient, say yes to small opportunities – sometimes these can lead to great things – and stay humble.”

The work not only unearthed Kimberley’s passion for interiors, but also helped prepare her to start her own firm – a dream inspired by her parents, who are both business-owners. “I saw first-hand the blood, sweat and tears that went into pursuing their dreams. Following Kimberley’s work experience, her mother became unwell. STABLES Catherine Heraghty, founder of interior styling company The Stables, shares how she serendipitously found her way into the industry she loves. An inherent passion for decorating has taken interior designer and stylist Catherine Heraghty a long way since the days of styling and restyling her dresser top at age six and later working in homewares stores while pursuing a commerce degree. “I was completely unaware there was this whole industry out there,” she recalls. It wasn’t until she began working in marketing that she discovered Sydney TAFE’s renowned creative hub, Design Centre Enmore, through a colleague. The following week, Catherine enrolled. Looking back on her Diploma of Interior Design and Decoration, Catherine admits design school’s vast workload proved far more challenging than university.

“But don’t let that deter you,” she advises. “Design is hands-on. There are always materials and samples floating around the classroom. What I learned at Enmore, I apply every day.” Following graduation, Catherine began working as a photography shoot assistant for interior publications at $50 a day (“I thought it was the best thing ever!”). She eventually enlisted her assistance on-call with an agency, and her talents began drawing calls from the stylists themselves. From there, Catherine formed her own interior design company, The Stables, enabling her to practise her passion with the flexibility to raise a family. Catherine credits much of the success of The Stables to her growing social media presence. With over 145,000 Instagram followers, the designer uses the platform for generating new business and locating new suppliers. Most recently, Catherine was approached by Realestate.com.au to star in 2 in Twelve, an online

After Julia Treuel and Sasha Wright-Neville renovated their first home in 2013 – three years before their memorable appearance on The Block – it only took two years of living there to realise that their love for refurbishing outweighed the abode itself.

" There’s som homes of that era – you just can’t ows." beat the high ceilings and bay wind

“There’s something intoxicating about coming up with a design and seeing it to fruition,” admits Sasha, who works in IT sales. Armed with Sasha’s management and budget smarts, alongside Julia’s knack for designing complementary spaces, the couple sold their home and indulged their passion as contestants on The Block in 2016.

“It confirmed what we already knew,” says Julia, a PR professional turned interior stylist. “We loved renovating and wanted to do it again and again.” Following their success as first runners-up, the pair launched their own design venture, Abbey Collective, in 2017. They also purchased ‘Little Willow’ – a tiny Edwardian home on the lush grounds of Melbourne’s historic Rippon Lea Estate mansion. The estate’s original three-bedroom gardener’s quarters “had been loved for generations and needed a pick-meup,” Julia recalls.

“Given we were flipping the property, our goal was to add as much value as possible. Our best bet was to create a four-bedroom home with space for a growing family.” But as the renovation began, unanticipated challenges surfaced. “The weatherboards in the two front rooms (formal living and master bedroom) had had their day,” says Sasha. “Plus, the timber frame was rotting and crooked – we had no choice but to tear it apart and rebuild in its likeness. It was the only way to ensure the house looked the same from the front, just with a new ‘skeleton’.” In the end, the reno proved another blockbuster for the pair: the home’s back section was removed and a new prefabricated open-plan living space was added, along with a first-floor extension. “The footprint almost doubled, yet we managed to retain the backyard,” says >

Julia and Sasha pride themselves on their ability to blend design elements of different eras, describing their style as “classic meets contemporary with a luxe vibe”. This is superbly evident in ‘Little Willow’ through the use of contemporary-shaped marble tiles in the bathrooms and laundry; elegant nohandle joinery in the open-plan kitchen and living room; and ageless champagne-gold tapware in the kitchen, laundry and bathrooms. Meanwhile, modern appliances, furniture and lighting enhance traditional floorboards and a deep gutter cornice that extends throughout the home. Crisp white is the backdrop for a palette of lilac, soft pink and plum accents, paired with white, black and grey neutrals. “The property has a timeless appeal because of it – but pops in the right places,” says Julia. 50

Julia and Sasha credit their Block adventure for helping the renovation come to fabulous fruition, particularly when it came to management. Says Julia, “Our experience made it far easier to project manage and anticipate when different fixtures and fittings would be required.” Julia also acknowledges The Real Estate Stylist, whose styling prowess aided in the recent sale of ‘Little Willow’. The couple has since relocated to Seattle, following Sasha’s acceptance of a job opportunity. But no distance could ever dampen the Abbey Collective spirit, Julia assures us: “Our philosophy is simple – create something beautiful wherever you go. There’s no reason that can’t extend to the Pacific Northwest. Watch this space.”

TOP 3 reno tips

Do your sums and don’t go over budget. “I was constantly drawn to fixtures I loved, and they weren’t always the smartest choice from a fiscal perspective,” recalls Julia.

Take the time to find good trades. “Interview three to five builders, and lay out your cards up front, so everyone’s aware of expectations,” advises Sasha.

Be mindful of your timeline and have everything ready to go. “This could mean selecting tapware 12 weeks in advance – best to be prepared,” Sasha recommends.

“The girls have grown up with us renovating, and both sleep through the sounds of drop saws, nail guns, and all sorts of hammering,” explains Nicola Greenaway. “Between babies and both working full time, we’ve been working on the house on weekends for five years.” Nicola and her husband, Darren, bought their 1950s cottage in Sydney’s Caringbah South six years ago. A year later, they began transforming it on their own, with help from their families. “It was in good condition – with orange pine, supershiny floors and lots of big, low windows. It had a pretty scungy pink-and-grey bathroom, and a ’50s blue kitchen with separate dining and lounge room.” Since moving in, they’ve added daughters Piper (4) and Maiya (2) to the family. The arrival of children meant a shift in their needs, in terms of space. “First it was just us, and now all our bedrooms are full of babes,” Nicola smiles. “Toy storage is an ongoing battle.” “We definitely needed open-plan living so I could watch the kids play from the kitchen, so taking out the wall between the living and kitchen was crucial, as well as changing the window heights so the kids couldn’t fall out

of them!” The couple also opted to add a deck with bifold doors to the back of the house, opening their living space to views of the bush. Despite their evolving family and work demands (Nicola launched her own styling and photography business, Concrete & Honey, three years back), their vision for the house has remained steady – “to create spaces we all loved being in and coming home to. A home that was lovely and light, and surrounded by our beautiful memories of happy events and travels”. They’ve met their own brief perfectly, drenching the interior in light by boldly whitewashing their pine floors. “It’s amazing to come home to – so uplifting – and it makes everything else in the space really pop. Cleaning them is another matter, though!” The white walls, ceilings, and floors are a versatile canvas against which Nicola can style and restyle her home, moving existing furniture and décor around to create new looks. String System shelving also allows her to curate and display beloved objects and plants. Nicola’s husband Darren made the dining table top from > form plywood paired with legs from Hammersmith.

Other savvy design choices include building their TV into a black wall and installing long, dreamy recessed curtains in the living room. Whether she’s styling products for a client or doing her own decorating at home, Nicola’s tip is to start with a clean slate: “I only add back what I absolutely love, and what I feel works best. If I’m not sure whether something works or not, I take it out.” This philosophy of subtraction and carefully considered addition has been central to Nicola’s and Darren’s renovation, where only the most beautiful and treasured possessions are on view. While slow DIY has been taxing, it’s also fostered patience and resilience. 62

O U T D O O R S Mon Palmer was hired to design the outdoor space. “The brief was to create a contemporary, oasis-style entertaining area that incorporated a pool. Being a small space, this was a challenge, so it was important that we selected the right designer. Mon is the queen of plunge pools and resort-style exteriors, so this was a no-brainer for us. We love her use of concrete and her plant choices. The whitewashed herringbone privacy screen planted with Madagascan Jasmine creates a total wow factor.”

Having built their Perth home in 2016, Erica Zuccala and her husband Peter, together with their children Aniela and Dominic, have been happily living the dream ever since. Their abode is a comfortable and inviting space, creating an intimate family sanctuary that is also ideal for entertaining. “In a home that uses lots of white, layer different textures and materials for effect,” Erica suggests. “Consider using natural elements like leathers, timber, stone and metals to achieve a contemporary raw style.” Starting with a crisp white base on the walls, Erica has expanded on her neutral colour palette by incorporating grey concrete render to the living room wall and external concrete floors, as well as matte black accents on tapware and handles. In contrast, grainy timber furniture, woven pendants, textured rugs, and soft furnishings with muted tones were chosen to add warmth to the interior. Erica used different treatments on the walls for interest, including wallpaper (the stunning wallpaper in Aniela’s room is from Origin Wallpapers), timber panelling and renders, and decorated with moody photographic art as well as eclectic and handcrafted pieces. Large windows allow natural light to flood the home, giving a bright and airy feel that is softened by flowing, sheer curtains. In fact, one particular window creates one of the

Likewise, small details make a big impact, such as laying the kitchen subway tiles in a herringbone pattern with a contrasting charcoal grout and opting for textured timber plank tiles over timber flooring. “We’ve had solid timber before but, with young children, we wanted to move towards something that could handle the traffic and wear and tear, without the maintenance. I wanted a rustic, earthy base to warm up and tone down the coldness of the white walls,” says Erica. Concrete finishes are a favourite element of the home. “It ties the whole home together to accentuate the raw contemporary look that we wanted to achieve. It continues through to the statement outdoor bench seat, which is a > favourite spot to chill and enjoy Perth’s balmy nights.”

The bi-folds connect the kitchen to the outdoor servery for easy entertaining.” Bar stools from Sitting Pretty Furniture; splashback tiles from European Ceramics; tapware from Vito Bertoni.

It is not surprising that Erica, a popular influencer on Instagram, has an eye for styling and interiors. Her top design tip? Don’t underestimate the power of greenery. “Plants are a must in our home,” she says. “They add freshness, drama and dimension to a space.” Greenery has been carefully selected for the home to ensure it thrives in its given location. Erica advises that Euphorbia succulents work well for indoor areas with low light, while Monstera and Dracaena are ideal for well-lit indoor areas. “Indoors, plants act as striking accent features if placed well. They can be a cheap alternative to decor pieces and often stand the test of time while other trends come and go.” Having loved plants since childhood, Erica feels a

great sense of achievement in maintaining a thriving garden. With a small backyard, Erica and Peter chose to work with Mon Palmer, who is known for creating exceptional modern outdoor spaces. Given a brief to design an oasis-style entertaining area that incorporated a plunge-pool, Mon excelled. “We love her use of concrete and her choices in striking plants. The whitewashed herringbone privacy screen planted with Madagascan Jasmine creeper creates a total wow factor – it grabs attention before you even step outside,” says Erica. Which is no small feat in a home that’s high in wow factor, inside and out.

NORTH BONDI FISH It doesn’t get more quintessentially Australian than a prawn sanga by the beach. And with North Bondi Fish making it gourmet by adding coastal rocket mayo and pickles, it’s hard to beat. Head chef Jesse McTavish (son of legendary surfboard designer Bob McTavish) grew up with a love of surfing and fishing, and a deep respect for the ocean. A keen forager, he experiments with locally found ingredients – such as sea rocket, which has a similar flavour to wasabi. Modern seafood at its best.
