EDITOR LONI PARKER

Have we been conditioned socially to think bigger is better? Do we really need the five-bedroom, two-bathroom McMansion with two (sometimes even three) living rooms to make us truly happy? The answer is probably not. Something really resonated with me when I read this issue's ‘Tiny Haus’ home tour, in which the owner Marnie Prowse commented, “I dread the thought of going back to a traditional-sized home. We are not just living, we are thriving in our Tiny Haus”. Marnie, her husband and their two small children live in a home that’s a mere 32sqm! With a fantastic deck and pool, the family spends a lot of quality time outdoors. For them, living with less stuff has made life simpler. It’s something that got me thinking while I was househunting recently. I had been in search of a spacious home on a big block when it dawned on me: “Who is this big home for?” My partner and I certainly don’t need anything large and extravagant. Something smaller that could be renovated in a beautiful, intentional way would be far better, not to mention cheaper. And with that, all expectations of what I should be buying disappeared and my judgement became less clouded. As I write this letter, I have just signed a contract to buy a three-bedroom home that’s about 80sqm in size. While it’s no Tiny Haus, it’s tiny in comparison to new builds these days. But, seeing the pitched ceiling in the living, dining and kitchen area, my heart soared with the possibilities of the space. Now the difficult part begins: waiting for the banks to approve my finances. If it all goes pear-shaped, I’ve put Plan B into place – Palm Springs is calling my name. Keep an eye out on Adore Magazine’s Instagram Stories to see how this tale unfolds...

ARTIST PROFILE

BONNIE

Gray

Dusty pink and French-kissed, Bonnie Gray’s latest collection is inspired by stories from the south of France. PHOTOGRAPHY BROOKE ART STUDIO + BONNIE GRAY WORDS NICHOLA DAVIES

Growing up with an undetected case of dyslexia, art helped Bonnie Gray comprehend concepts that were seemingly easy for others to understand. Art, says Bonnie, is a language that lays out the answers for her sweetly, easily and colourfully. Her latest collection, ‘Vessels’, was inspired by a trip to the south of France, walking through coastal Mediterranean landscapes, exploring alleyways, and relishing chocolate croissants smothered in cream and strawberries, smoothies, and sunshine. Bonnie’s art conveys her creative spirit – she has dabbled in everything from dance teaching to floristry, music and songwriting. She begins her artworks by writing music, poems and melodies, which she then paints from this space of inspiration. “The music springs from pen to paper then paintbrush to canvas,” she says. “When people receive a painting, they are really receiving a colourful song on their walls.”

*

“When people receive a painting, they are really receiving a colourful song on their walls.” Bonnie’s creative routine often begins at sunrise listening to podcasts before she heads to her studio dressed in paint-flecked overalls to read clients’ stories for commissioned works. While she has a range of art prints and original works available in her online shop and through Greenhouse Interiors, she says commissioned pieces are her favourite projects. “I feel so honoured to be entrusted with people’s stories, and sometimes I literally cry reading them,” she says. Bonnie weaves these people’s love stories, memories, pets and moments of humour into her canvases. Inspired by reading their stories, she layers abstract shapes, patterns and words. Some paintings have so many layers that songs and words are buried, never to be seen – little secrets that only add to the allure of Bonnie’s distinct and intriguing pieces.

DESIGN STUFF

After five years as a thriving online retailer, Designstuff has opened a Scandi-licious showroom in Melbourne. Founder Christina Fedders shares her story. PHOTOGRAPHY SIMON SHIFF / WORDS BETH GRESHWALK

CHRISTINA FEDDERS

“We understand how daunting the design world can be, and therefore don’t take ourselves too seriously.”

When it comes to buying home décor, you can’t help but love the instant gratification of online shopping. But when you need some extra direction or inspiration, there’s nothing like a bricks and mortar store. This was the case for Designstuff, which began as a popular online destination for modern Scandinavian-style homewares and furniture and has now opened its own showroom in Melbourne. “One of our most-asked questions after launching our website was, ‘Do you have a showroom?’” recalls Christina Fedders, Designstuff’s owner, manager and head buyer. “At the time, we were operating out of our granny flat at home. Though we were happy to welcome customers in, it really wasn’t the best setting to be showcasing our products.” Believing it was the necessary next step for the business’s growth, Christina decided to take the plunge and open a public Designstuff shop in St Kilda. Collaborating with local designer Angela Harry, Christina worked to “set up a space suitable

for viewing and interacting with our pieces”. The result is a “hybrid” space, pairing the imaginative elements of a concept store with the ease of a traditional retail experience. Employing elegant Nordic-style vignettes on freestanding walls that represent different rooms of the home, the showroom demonstrates how various brands work collectively rather than on their own. These include Designstuff.com.au’s bestsellers, high-end display pieces and furniture. > adore home

19

STORE PROFILE

The store was also designed with the flexibility to update as seasons change and trends emerge. Says Christina, “Our aim is to do major refreshes every three to four months to showcase big collections or concepts, with smaller rotations every few weeks as we receive new products.” As far as customer service is concerned, Christina and her team prioritise assisting shoppers on a personal level, so they can fully enjoy their Designstuff experience. “We’re open to all and would love to meet as many friendly faces as possible,” she says. “We understand how daunting the design world can be, and therefore don’t take ourselves too seriously.” The Designstuff team are happy to provide styling ideas and recommendations, order in stock, or simply talk design with visitors to the showroom. “We carry swatches and samples for many of our furniture pieces and products, and we have a great big meeting table – perfect for our lovely trade customers to discuss finishes with their clients.” It is this stellar level of service that, according to Christina, makes the retail experience at Designstuff something special. “We are so grateful for every customer who walks through our doors or browses our website – we feel privileged to be a part of their design story.”

The other produces artisanal pieces for the home. “I come from a hospitality background, so making functional wares was a natural blending of my love of food and dining, together with my passion for making,” Marloe explains. “The homewares process is less restrictive when it comes to function; we have the opportunity to delve more into form and aesthetics.”

MARLOE Marloe Morgan’s serendipitous introduction to ceramics gave her the chance to combine her passions. PHOTOGRAPHY TESS LEOPOLD

Marloe’s refined creations exude a sense of stillness and understated luxury. Glossy surfaces, tantalising lava glazes and perfectly balanced feminine shapes characterise her recent work. The pieces have a timeless elegance that draws on classical forms, while a restrained palette of soft pink, bone, black and white gives them a confident, contemporary presence. Exotic locations feature prominently in the Marloe Marloe aesthetic. “I find inspiration in so many places – travel, solitude, architecture, history, different customs and cultures,” says Marloe. The freedom of travel energises her practice: “It allows me to dream bigger.” She hopes this sense of elevation is conveyed to others as they interact with her work: “I would love for people to embrace the rituals we perform daily and feel a sense of belonging, a connection to beauty and an enrichment of routine.”

WORDS CASEY HUTTON

Five years ago, disillusioned with her day job, Marloe Morgan enrolled in a 10-week beginners’ pottery course. “I was searching for classes and hobbies I could lose myself in during the evenings,” she remembers. Soon afterwards, the Gold Coast local quit her job and returned to hospitality so that she could focus on ceramics. Mostly self-taught, her practice informed by years spent working with top chefs and restaurants, she’s now at the helm of one of Australia’s most exciting design and ceramic studios, Marloe Marloe. With apartment and townhouse living on the rise in capital cities, living with less space has become common. But less space needn’t mean less style, as proven by these new Pine Avenue townhomes in Elwood, Melbourne. In designing the homes, The Stella Collective team maximised every inch of space. “Thoughtful storage solutions were key in creating a clutter-free space. We did this by designing inbuilt joinery throughout the house that was both functional and design-led,” explains The Stella Collective founder Hana Hakim.

Store and display culinary items!

CHEF'S CADDY “A custom-built chef’s caddy is a great way of using dead space in a kitchen. It also creates a design moment for you to display your culinary goods – beloved recipe books, for example, or even a mini herb garden,” suggests Hana.

CONCEAL

* 26

“We created built-in storage into the splashback of the kitchen. It’s a great little storage space to house detergents and dishcloths where they can be aired but not seen.”

“The joinery in Pine Ave is functional but also makes a design statement,” says Hana. “In the kitchen we have a tall bank of joinery, where you will find the fridge and pantry – the space is just massive! We installed big drawers in there and instead of just a cupboard for the fridge we created a big opening. There is room on the other side of the fridge to store brooms, dustpans and brushes, and any other clutter that you want hidden away. We designed the kitchen so that everything has its own place. It was important to design this space to be a clutterfree area – as an avid cook myself, the kitchen is a place to unwind, socialise and be truly in the moment when cooking.”

3

SPACE OPTIMISATION

H I D D E N S TO R AG E “Behind the white powder-coated steel mixer console, you’ll find hidden storage for soap, toothbrushes and the like,” explains Kegan. “It helps keep the space looking sharp, while catering to the practicalities of day-to-day living. Pull-out drawers, under-sink storage and the medicine cabinet ensure that all your beauty needs are tucked away out of sight for a clean, minimalist space.”

“We also optimised the space under the stairs for storage which also doubles as an interesting display area.

4

MIRRORS “Maximising natural light is super important, as it will take your small space from cramped to airy,” says Hana. “You can do this with feature mirrors. Not only are they functional, they also harness the light.”

5

INBUILT JOINERY “Another way to get the most out of dead space is inbuilt joinery and seating,” says Hana. “We really wanted to embrace the social element in living spaces; it was important to ensure the spaces celebrated entertaining. In some of the townhouses, we’ve incorporated an inbuilt seat, which offers some additional storage and accommodates a beautiful big six-seater dining table, which is very rare in modern townhomes. We also optimised the space under the stairs for storage and an interesting display area.”

O P E N S TO R AG E “We were so in love with the kitchen caddy that we wanted to bring this concept up to the master retreat on the top level,” says Kegan Harry from ANGLE. “It’s a place to house your fragrances, quick go-to items and, of course, some additional greenery. And what’s a master retreat without your very own walk-in robe, drenched in natural light?”

If space permits, a mudroom like this one (pictured this page) can be the stuff of storage dreams. “This mudroom was designed specifically as a space for convenient storage,” says designer Michelle Hart of Bask Interiors. “A couple of pull-out drawers underneath the bench seat means shoes can be accessed easily and also put away for a clutterfree area. We installed a few wall hooks for the homeowner to hang up their handbag or coat.”

When it comes to creating a tidy wardrobe – first things first – declutter! As Marie Kondo asks, ‘Does it spark joy?’ If the answer is no, toss items that are beyond repair and donate or sell items in good condition. A combo of hanging space and drawers is the best option for an organised wardrobe. Low on hanging space? Only hang up the current season’s clothing. In summer, for example, store away your winter woollies – suitcases or clear compression bags are great for this. Accessories and shoes should also have a dedicated space. Display smaller items that are used regularly, like perfume, on a beautiful tray. If you’re lucky enough to have a large walk-in robe or dressing room, also consider furniture with hidden storage, like the bench seat on this page.

S T U DY/O F F I C E A home office is a necessity for most people, but you don’t need a dedicated room to create a study. A study nook can be positioned almost anywhere in the home where there’s an empty space. Get creative, as Jess Viscarde of Eclectic Creative has done in her client’s home (pictured this page). “This is the entrance of the home and was one of those dreaded I-don’t-know-what-to-do-with spaces,” says Jess. “The space was a little awkward for stand-alone furniture due to its location at the entrance, so we decided to design a beautiful built-in study nook. The room now serves a purpose and is a brilliant multifunctional home office and storage area.” Paola Gredler’s study nook (pictured opposite page) is located under her staircase – making good use of an otherwise awkward space.

A R T D E C O S T U N N E R “Together with the body corporate, I’ve been actively involved in the transformation of the exterior of the building,” says Lucy. “We were very keen to restore it to its former glory. We’ve since painted and updated its colour scheme to be more in line with its original light colour.”

L I V I N G R O O M “The hub of the home is most definitely the living room, as it connects you to the kitchen, courtyard and hallway,” explains Lucy. “I wanted to centre this space around my favourite artwork, ‘White Wash’. This photographic print was taken by my partner at his favourite surf spot down the coast. I love everything about this work – its feeling, the colour and mostly my emotional connection to the subject matter. I knew it would set the tone for the interiors perfectly.” Sofa, rug, ottoman and art print from Hunting For George.

When Lucy Glade-Wright, as a 20-something obsessed with the TV series The Secret Life of Us, first saw the view of Melbourne from the rooftop of her Armadale apartment, it was love. The apartment’s curved windows, visible from the moment she stepped through the front door, sealed the deal. Lucy, who is one of the founders of home decor company Hunting for George, was also drawn to the apartment’s romantic Art Deco exterior. A Palm Springs-inspired garden wraps around the building, with palm trees complementing the elegant white brick façade. The building itself is part of Australian architectural history, having been designed by leading architect Stuart Hall after locals complained in the early 1900s that an influx of run-of-the-mill flats would ruin their neighbourhood’s character. The resulting design, completed in the 1940s, kept the community happy and is still loved today. Lucy’s vision for designing the interior of the home was to reflect what was going on outside; she chose a modern, coastal vibe for the space. “The interior already had great bones, so there was little I needed to do to improve it structurally,” Lucy says. “Instead, I focused on cosmetic changes, namely installing new window furnishings (with the help of DIY Blinds)

42

to accentuate the gorgeous curves of the building and enhance the light throughout.” “Conscious of bringing more light into the apartment, I also painted all internal walls with Haymes Paint to lighten the interiors,” she explains. “Other small cosmetic changes included replacing all light fixtures and updating outdated handles and pulls with modern designs.” The use of timber and neutrals in the furniture and soft finishes adds warmth, and textured items create interest while keeping the space minimal. Greenery can be seen in every room of the house, adding life to the chic space. While the home is strategically curated so as to not distract from its architectural design, Lucy’s love of art has injected it with colour and personality. The apartment features a mix of prints and original artworks such as collages and paintings, created by friends and artists Lucy admires. Bearing in mind the small scale of the apartment, maximising its square meterage was paramount, as was choosing décor that would enhance the feeling of space. “I chose to hang a circular mirror in the living room to specifically act as a space enhancer,” Lucy says. “It bounces more light across the room and reflects the exterior gardens, bringing them inside and allowing the space to > open up.”

The living room connects to a private courtyard, which adds valuable outdoor living space. To make the most of the living room, Lucy forewent a TV and opted instead for her prized turntable and Yamaha speakers on top of a timber buffet, which provides additional storage. Plantation shutters by DIY Blinds throughout the home elevate the space, while styling in the kitchen has been kept to a minimum to maximise prep area on the stone countertops. The room that underwent the biggest transformation was the bathroom. Fitting it out in a modern design, including new fixtures, cabinetry and tiling, created storage space and tied it in with the rest of the home. Now, after more than 10 happy years in the apartment, Lucy has put it on the market, giving someone else the chance to fulfil their own Secret Life of Us fantasy.

K I T C H E N “In order to make this apartment viable for a family of four, we had to make the storage work as hard as possible without compromising the design,” says Sarah. “The joinery hides not only integrated appliances and a European laundry but also a utility cupboard. I really don’t like appliances on benches, so we created a cupboard next to the fridge to hide the toaster, kettle, coffee machine and SodaStream. Hiding the functionality and streamlining the space allows the eye to be drawn to the furniture and styling.”

D I N I N G “My favourite piece of furniture is my dining set – original 1950s Danish Johannes Andersen chairs and extendable dining table,” says Sarah.

When Sarah Wolfendale, her husband Tommy and their young daughters Ella and Ivy moved to Melbourne after seven years in the UK, their Australian dream of raising a family didn’t involve having a Hills Hoist in the backyard. For the Wolfendales, who commute to work by bike, location rather than size was the most important factor when it came to buying a home. That said, when they were shopping for apartments and most were 70sqm, the extra 20sqm of space in the home they eventually chose made an impact. The extra floor space, along with soaring fourmetre ceilings and the surrounding 20 acres of enviable shared facilities, including tennis courts, barbecue areas, a gym, an outdoor pool and a bowling green, sealed the deal. Their apartment building was formerly the Kew Lunatic Asylum, constructed between 1864 and 1872. Having both grown up in places rich in historic architecture (Sarah in Adelaide and Tommy in England), the couple were able to look beyond the home’s past and see its potential. They loved the Victorian architecture, with its stunning arched windows, but Sarah says the original layout was problematic. “The bathroom was 2m in front of the arched windows, so the main living space wasn’t in natural light,” Sarah says. “The bathroom and laundry area were impractical and badly laid out, as you had to walk through the kitchen to wash your hands after using the toilet, and there were no drawers and no pantry in the kitchen.” “It had no sense of entry when you walked in the front door,”

52

“We flipped the layout in the that the kitchen, living and dining area soched main spaces were framed by ar " windows to let the natural light in.

*

explains Sarah. “But by far the biggest issue was that it didn’t utilise the full height of the space for storage.” With a budget of $150,000, the Wolfendales’ renovations were extensive, gutting the interior and leaving the heritage exterior walls. “We flipped the layout in the kitchen, living and dining area so that the main spaces were framed by arched windows to let the natural light in,” Sarah says. “Flipping the bathroom and reconfiguring the layout allowed us to add an ensuite, as well as the main bathroom. We wanted the extra bathroom for our daughter and for when family and friends come to stay.” The couple also created a mezzanine above the bathrooms. At 1.7m high, not everyone can stand up straight in it, but it allows for lots of storage, a double bed for guests and a desk that looks down to the main space. Sarah and Tommy lived in the apartment prior to the renovation, which gave them time to really look at the space and its requirements. Opening up the layout and maximising storage were their main priorities. >

“We don’t have any storage cages or offsite storage, so every millimetre of space counted,” Sarah says. “We accentuated the height of all the cupboards and added a movable library-style ladder that can be moved between all the cupboards.”

“To make sure the storage was as efficient as possible, I measured every pot and pan, mascara bottle and deodorant can, and then designed shelf heights and drawers around them.” “The joinery hides not only integrated appliances [designed in collaboration with Fisher & Paykel] and a European laundry but also a utility cupboard, complete with a slideout ironing board,” Sarah explains. Sarah and Tommy now have two children in their cleverly designed apartment. “I think the project shows that if you get the storage right, you can make a small space practical and beautiful.”

When interior designer Tim Connah of Visualising Interiors and partner/stylist Grae moved into their onebedroom Manly apartment in 2018, they were ready for a new interior: one that would embrace their creative personalities, their beachside locale, and the happiness of their family - including sausage dog, Bunnings. But renovating would come with some serious considerations. “We wanted to avoid strata at all costs,” Tim explains. “We’d heard how long it could take to get approval, and even then you may not get approval.” Furthermore, maximising their 63-square-metre space meant choosing the right size furnishings, an uncluttered yet impactful design, and a willingness to compromise to achieve the home they wanted. And achieve they did. Tim and Grae began by determining the kitchen and bathroom required the brunt of the reno. “They were a bit dated, and their monochromatic style didn’t fit the beachside location,” Tim recalls, adding the rooms would be tackled in two stages, starting with the kitchen. “We had a vision of how we wanted the kitchen to look, and wanted to achieve this without having to pay a huge amount for a custom-design kitchen,” he says. So after

demolishing the existing cabinets, tiles and appliances themselves, the pair opted to install an IKEA flat-pack kitchen, then customise their oak overhead cabinets for bespoke allure. This involved smashing out the glass and stapling woven cane behind them. Proving a galley kitchen could still be the social ‘hub’ of their home, the couple also instated a new floating bench with stools - along with floating floorboards and overhead shelves. All without any strata approvals needed. “Nothing we did was structural - it was all cosmetic,” says Tim. “Replacing the kitchen cabinets didn’t affect any plumbing. There was an existing water outlet intended for a washing machine, which we used for an integrated dishwasher, then moved our washing machine to the communal laundry.” Stage two - the bathroom. Here, Tim and Grae would contend with an oversized shower, cumbersome toilet and tiny vanity. Armed with a design concept that would “correct these errors” with practicality and appeal, the pair would complete their second demolition. They would then assist the necessary plumbers, tradies and tilers by sourcing all of the fixtures, fittings and materials - as well as providing their own feature wall-tile concept. “(The tilers) did a fantastic job,” adds >

K I T C H E N Although it’s small, the kitchen is still very practical, and the height of the ceiling gives the illusion of space. “On entering our home, your eyes are immediately drawn up towards the beautiful V-groove ceiling,” says Marnie.

T I N Y D I N I N G N O O K “To us, it’s important that we use every space in our home every single day,” explains Marnie. “Each area is multifunctional; we don’t feel the need to have a space dedicated to one purpose.” Dining table and stools from Clickon Furniture; pendant light from Huset Design Store; grey placemats and coasters from Country Road; white jug from Mud Australia.

On a residential street in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire, you can push open a discreet gate and wander down the side of a beachcomber cottage. You’ll catch sight of a shimmering blue pool before you find yourself on the back deck of another – very small – dwelling. Welcome to Tiny Haus, the pint-sized home that Marnie Prowse and her husband Dan built in their back garden. The couple bought the property in 2013 and moved into the existing house, but in 2016 began planning a lifestyle change. The pair were drawn to the idea of living with less, creating “more time to focus on what’s important”. They also had the savvy realisation that they’d be able to afford an architecturally designed home with top-notch finishes if they minimised their floorplan. “We loved our location and didn’t want to leave,” Marnie explains. So, they decided to build a tiny house on the same block and rent out the original home. Architect Chris Freeburn of Ironbark Architecture was immediately enthusiastic about the idea. “We were able to have fun bouncing ideas back and forth, like the kids’ vertical bedroom,” recalls Marnie. Yes, you heard right – Marnie and Dan also have two small children, Ella and Frankie! Designing a functional tiny

“We are not just living, we are thriving in our Tiny Haus.” house with a master bedroom and a room for Ella and Frankie, as well as space for work, play and entertaining, was a creative process. “Often the best ideas come when you have constraints,” Marnie reflects. The family moved into their 32sqm home in late 2017. The girls’ whimsical bedroom is a pod-like system of bunk beds connected by a child-sized staircase, with a play area below. It felt like a risk – Marnie and Dan obsessed for months over how they would manage to change the sheets – but it’s paid off. “We’ve created something that works as a bedroom but is also loads of fun and fosters imagination – not only for the girls but for me too,” says Marnie. Marnie and Dan’s bed is built into a nook with a wardrobe, linen press and clothes basket. The bed lifts up, providing a play space for the kids during the day, but can also be used for storage. “Each area is multifunctional,” Marnie points out.

“We factored in the things that were important to us to have in a home, but on a smaller scale. For example, we have a two-burner stove, a combi oven, a smaller fridge and a dishwasher drawer. We make simple meals, so this suits us perfectly.” The outdoor area was also a crucial aspect of the design. “Our architect really nailed the brief by extending the kitchen outside, adding a gas strut window, a covered outdoor dining room and an outdoor kitchen. The deck then extends to a chill-out area where we have huge outdoor beanbags,” says Marnie. “We love to entertain – we’ve had 20 to 30 people here at one time.” The formed concrete pool with marble-look waterline tiles and white glass pebbles is a glittering focal point that’s visible through a generous picture window in the lounge and dining area. A fire pit and

two kitchen gardens complete the outdoor space. “We are not minimalists by any stretch,” Marnie says, explaining that they had to cull their possessions before the move. This included getting rid of duplicate items. For example, she opted to donate their “everyday” dinner set and keep the special set they’d been given as a wedding present. “Now we only use our beautiful one and mealtimes are special every time we sit down.” Anything they miss about a larger home? “I dread the thought of going back to a traditional-sized home,” Marnie answers emphatically. “We are not just living, we are thriving in our Tiny Haus.”
