Coastal THE

EDITION

Does anyone else fantasise about their future dream house? I have a box filled with magazine cut-outs (I'm a bit old-fashioned like that) of inspiring interiors. Perhaps after you've finished reading this Coastal edition of Adore, some pages might end up in your own mood-board box – I know I'll be ripping a few pages out to keep for my ‘one-day’ home. This edition is filled with spaces that ooze relaxed seaside vibes. Although I admit to wanting a home in every type of style, my tastes always gravitate to some strain of coastal – be it boho, coastal farmhouse (yes, that's a thing), or the classic Hamptons look. At this time of year, I look forward to getting away and soaking up some summer rays. If you too are deserving of a break, try a trip to Port Stephens – just a half-hour drive from Newcastle Airport. I recently enjoyed a four-day vacay there and it was bliss (even if it did rain for most of the trip). Port Stephens is one of those hidden gems that people don't necessarily think of straight away when planning a holiday, yet its beaches rival some of the best in the world. With their pure white sand, clear water and the occasional cheeky dolphin popping up near the shoreline, you'd think you were in the Whitsundays! Check out my personal guide to the hottest spots to eat, play and stay in the region, from page 82.

STORE PROFILE

Behind its delicious pink door, the second iteration of Bungalow Trading Co. is an even more inspiring and eclectic version of the original store, which opened in 2013 in Melbourne’s Caulfield South.

BUNGALOW TRADING CO.

From its new Brighton premises, Bungalow Trading Co. continues to showcase a beautifully curated collection of homewares, art, fashion and accessories. WORDS PIP MILLER / PHOTOGRAPHY SUZI APPEL

“The idea to open a store of my own came about after I had my two sons,” explains owner Anna Chisholm. “I opened close to where I lived, as there was nowhere nearby to purchase art, soft furnishings and décor, nor any unique gifts or fashion.” But after four lovely years there, Anna was ready to expand into a larger space. Bungalow’s new premises are bigger, brighter and bolder, with thoughtfully curated products revealing Anna’s love of colour and her passion for retail. “I have always chosen ranges and collections that I love myself and would have in my own home or wardrobe,” Anna says. Anna designed the fit-out after completing a Certificate IV in Interior Decoration at Design School, and then built it over a series of weekends and evenings with her partner. ANNA'S COLOUR TIPS “If you prefer neutrals, you don’t have to go for full-blown colour. Instead, incorporate a soft pastel with grey or navy tones. Alternatively, use a pastel alongside a stronger colour – I’m loving soft mauve or lilac with bold mustard, or sage green with stronger terracotta or rust. Use a colour wheel to help guide you on harmonious colour combos.”

A Porta Contours timberlined wall at the front of the shop creates a great first impression with its styled installations of bed linen, cushions and homewares. The rear of the store sports a rounded counter, curved pink clothing pod and fitting rooms beneath arches, and is dedicated to fashion and accessories. A neon ‘Bungalow’ sign from the original store is also given a home in the new design. Bungalow Trading Co. continues to be underpinned by Anna’s strong sense of community and her desire to showcase her network of established artists, creatives and interior designers. “I like sharing the stories or ideas behind the pieces and ranges. I’m finding more and more that customers appreciate knowing the provenance of the product.”

NICE DIGS Combining fashion and functionality, Nice Digs creates high-quality lifestyle goods for the discerning modern dog owner. WORDS JACQUI GREIG PHOTOGRAPHY FRANCES PARKER

What do you get when you mix fashion and textile design with a slight dog obsession? Nice Digs, that’s what. Founder Georgia Havekotte graduated with a Bachelor of Fashion Design from RMIT and trained in couture techniques in Paris –including a stint interning for London fashion designer Vivienne Westwood. But it wasn’t until she adopted her pooch

personal aesthetic, so I decided to bridge the gap and create my own range of fun and functional products for the modern pet lover,” Georgia explains. The brand focuses on simple, contemporary designs that complement her customers’ lifestyles, together with a strong commitment to hand-crafted, locally made goods. Georgia’s latest ‘Wanderlust’ collection is influenced by her recent trip to Mexico, and takes inspiration from the region’s rich heritage of local crafts and folk art. Georgia’s experience in the fashion industry has allowed her to develop a unique style, and she gravitates towards strong patterns, colour and repetition. “My love of fashion, homewares and textiles will always be a driving force in my designs. And, of course, my dog Checkers inspires me to create cool things that she likes, and I do too.”

bench seat tip

“Consider the seat depth and angle of the timber backrest,” says Melissa Bonney. “There’s also nothing worse than the seat being too high or short.”

No one should stand for discomfort when it comes to taking a seat in your outdoor space. GlobeWest’s Mimi Weir says quality materials make all the difference in Australia’s harsh climate. “When looking at upholstered outdoor products, look for UV-resistant, fade-resistant, breathable and temperature-regulating fabrics such as Sunbrella or Sunproof. The fabric can be easily cleaned to remove mould and mildew build-up.” Director of The Designory, Melissa Bonney, who designed this outdoor space (pictured opposite) for new Airbnb accommodation Barefoot Escapes, says a built-in bench seat is their go-to for creating a cohesive alfresco space. “This bench seat is the best of both worlds – it’s a comfortable height for dining or putting your feet up for an afternoon doze.” Stylist and property developer Nat Winter of Chasing Winter’s latest iteration of outdoor design (pictured above) oozes comfort and charm with its raft of seating options, including hanging chairs. built-in barbecues

2

Built-in barbecues have fast become part of contemporary Australia’s entertaining zeitgeist, combining practical benefits with our outdoor lifestyle aesthetic. Available in a plethora of sizes, shapes and functionality levels (some outdoor kitchens have everything, including the kitchen sink) to suit all budgets, built-in barbecues have a certain sleekness and sophistication you just don’t get with a freestanding version. Grant Boyle, Landscape Designer at Fig Landscapes, says built-in barbecues are great if you have the space. “While you are free to install your own, providing you follow council guidelines regarding placement from the boundary, things to think about before you cook outside are storage, power, lighting and proximity to the kitchen.” Studio Atelier’s Creative Director, Kimberley Tan, agrees on the need for space and also suggests thinking about how the barbecue will relate to other furniture, so that it doesn’t present as an awkward afterthought. “Creating a dedicated zone or nook for the barbecue is important so it integrates into the existing entertaining area.” DESIGN FIG LANDSCAPES / PHOTOGRAPHY JESSE ANN

flooring

Australia’s obsession with outdoor entertaining has introduced designer luxury and elegance into otherwise ordinary gardens. Success outside relies on a holistic design approach from the floor up. The message from the experts is this: be creative and explore the vast range of options, from raw concrete to encaustic tiles and paving, that can give star quality to your outdoor space. Sister design duo Alisa and Lysandra selected striking geometric Blue Stone pavers from Beaumont Tiles (pictured opposite) for their soft concrete colour. “We love how the natural stone contrasts with the grass and the natural timber of the outdoor table.” Margaret and Kit from Alida and Miller love using encaustic tiles (pictured below), which they say offer greater variety (including endless patterns and colourways) and durability. “The most important design rule for outdoor tiles is that they are non-slip, with a P4 rating when wet.” Studio Atelier’s Kimberley Tan says they chose concrete flooring (pictured at the top of opposite page) for its organic, raw nature and inherent natural imperfections, which add character. “The patterned tile on the porch adds playfulness to the raised deck and was a design feature we carried through the house.”

swimming pools

Swimming pools are more than just a place to cool off on a hot day; they can make a dramatic and covetable statement. Alisa and Lysandra dispel the myth that spacious gardens are the only place for swimming pools. Even the smallest space can integrate its own plunge design to truly amp up the luxe factor, as the sisters did in this contemporary indoor/outdoor bathroom (pictured top of opposite page). Josh Harrison, Director of Harrison’s Landscaping, says a holistic approach is key to successfully integrating a pool into your garden, irrespective of size. This pool, designed and built by Harrison’s Landscaping (pictured this page), is just 5.4m x 3m in size. Josh says the cascading sheer-descent

water feature and stone wall (which cleverly hides the pool heater) create an element of space, while the glass fence maintains a clear view from the house to the pool. “We wanted to create a tropical resort feel, so we used tiles in a mix of green tones in the swimming pool. Using a tile with different tones creates movement in the water colour,” explains Josh. Kimberley Tan, Creative Director at Studio Atelier, says this pool (pictured bottom of opposite page) provides a focal point at the rear of the landscaped garden. “The glass fencing allows your eye to be drawn further into the distance, giving a sense of added depth to the block.”

outdoor showers

There’s nothing more liberating or luxurious than taking a shower in your own outdoor bathroom. While the lifestyle attributes of having an outdoor shower – be it for indulgence or purely practical purposes – are great, Reece Bathroom Marketing Leader Daniela Santilli says a number of details need to be considered, from plumbing and drainage to the demand for quality materials durable enough to withstand the harshest weather conditions. “Always consult a licensed plumber to ensure your existing plumbing outlets can properly service your outdoor shower. They will also be able to assist you with proper drainage. Without it you could end up with puddles and mud – not ideal,” says Daniela. For Kyal and Kara Demmrich’s Long Jetty project (pictured at the bottom of opposite page), they opted for the Phoenix ‘Vivid Slimline’ shower arm and tapware set in a gunmetal finish. “This is an indoor set that we’ve been able to use outdoors due to the covered nature of the shower area,” Kara explains. According to Kara, while the shower itself is quite subtle, it’s the breezeblock feature, the same width as the tiled shower floor, that draws the eye and makes the biggest statement. 1 Privacy: Ask yourself if the purpose of your outdoor shower is to wash off sand from the beach, or to have a thorough clean. If it’s the latter, consider timber screens or a walkaround breezeblock wall for privacy.

2 Drainage: Whether water drains into a gravel pit below the shower or is taken away by a drainpipe, good drainage will certainly make your shower more user-friendly. 3 Hot vs cold: If the budget is tight, consider a cold-water shower – a good option if it’s going to be used mostly in the warmer months.

Seeing potential in an unloved Newcastle beach house was the start of a beautiful renovation story for Caitlin Hayden and her family. PHOTOGRAPHY TANYA ZOUEV / STYLING CAITLIN HAYDEN / WORDS CASEY HUTTON

HOME TOUR “The condition of our home when we bought it was horrendous,” recalls Caitlin Hayden. The rambling house had been a neglected rental for decades, and the only other bidders were developers keen to take advantage of the block’s proximity to the beach. But when Caitlin saw the vaulted ceilings at the back of the house she fell in love. That initial spark – along with the home’s size and great location – was enough for her and her husband Jon to take the plunge. “I couldn’t wait to get started turning it into our dream home,” she says. That was over three years ago, and the home’s bright, beautifully layered interior is the result of a staged renovation that’s still in progress. The family moved in having only painted and recarpeted the three bedrooms, and then lived with the dilapidated kitchen and living space as best they could before tackling it in their first stage of renovations. “We painted over the stained-pine vaulted ceiling and peach-coloured walls, removed outdated fireplaces and added the kitchen. We also had the brushbox timber floor sanded and sealed in a clear, matt finish.”

40

After that, they added a fourth bedroom (in time for the arrival of their third baby) and built a shelf wall in the master bedroom. They upgraded the hallway with VJ panelling, replaced all the interior doors and painted everything in Taubmans Snow Drop. Their enviable relationship with their builder and carpenter – Caitlin’s brother – has been a huge positive. “He completely understands my brief and is amazing at communicating with us along the way.” Balancing the needs of their three young children has meant working slowly, with breaks between reno stages to take time out from the chaos and enjoy the house. Ultimately, this has allowed for a more organic journey. “Our ideas for this house have definitely evolved over the past three years,” says Caitlin. “I truly believe that you need to live in a space before deciding the best direction for it.” Unsurprisingly, Caitlin’s favourite spot is the kitchen and lounge, with its whitewashed exposed beams. The light-filled space, which sits at the back of the home and opens onto a large deck overlooking the beach, perfectly balances refined tastes with > beach-shack charisma.

S I T T I N G R O O M (PICTURED OPPOSITE PAGE AND BELOW) “We added Easycraft ‘easyGROOVE’ panelling to the length of the room to break up the long white hall and add some texture,” says Caitlin. “We love the amount of light this room gets, so decided to make it into a cosy and inviting sitting room. It has become my quiet little sanctuary when the house is full of chaos. We have managed to create an eclectic coastal vibe, with my thrifted mid-century credenza paired with modern GlobeWest chairs and a Middle of Nowhere art print.”

F R O N T E N T R Y (PICTURED RIGHT) “In this front part of the house we have kept the renovations to a minimum, as it will eventually change to make way for a new entryway and master suite,” explains Caitlin. “We have the beautiful Au Fait loveseat positioned in here to bring a coastal vibe and also provide practical seating. It’s a great focal point at the front of the house.”

*

"My general aesthetic is combining adding neutrals and textures and of course in a lot of beautiful greenery."

Combining neutrals, textures and greenery, the home’s interior is as practical as it is beautiful. “We have lots of secret hiding nooks for all the toys and craft and, although there is a lot of white, due to its size it’s extremely child-friendly.”

>

Caitlin and Jon’s renovation has been flexible and resourceful – and accepting of the needs of their little people. When their daughter opted for floral wallpaper and a pastel palette, they embraced the change. “Some of my most treasured childhood memories are redecorating my bedroom with my mum,” Caitlin confides. “She always helped me to create my own special retreat – and that’s what I’ve done with my daughter’s room.” “It’s a labour of love turning this disjointed beach house into our dream family home. We are slowly working at creating a space that we all love and can grow in.”

TIPS

Hire a builder you trust and whose work you’ve seen. Renovate in sections, so your entire house isn’t in complete upheaval. Pre-plan all aspects of your design, including art placement, power outlets and lighting. Know your budget and include a contingency for surprise costs. Check online marketplaces for second-hand or unused building materials.

HOME TOUR

To cross the threshold of this much-loved weekend home belonging to Caroline and Manie Maritz is to enter a space in which it’s impossible not to unwind. Though leagues apart from its current incarnation, on first viewing the property in mid-2016 the couple immediately recognised its solid building integrity and classical architectural proportions – a winning combination that opened up endless possibilities for reconfiguration and reinvention. With its magnificent position, which visually connects with both the lagoon and the West Coast National Park, there were no doubts about the house’s enormous potential. But reaching that potential, and in time for their family’s December holiday, was another matter entirely. “We had

to work around the fact that budget was complicated by distance and accessibility. We had to keep it simple. Our focus was very much on making the lagoon, and our connection to the lagoon, the main event.” Caroline describes the look they were aiming for as “stylish and sensual coastal simplicity” – rich with tactile creature comforts but down-to-earth and unadorned, so as to banish any second thoughts about putting feet up on sofas or worries about wine stains and coasters. The first step was to strip the space of extraneous details and to paint the floors white. “It didn’t work very well because it was dirty in no time,” laughs Caroline. “That tweaked our ideas and we corrected with platinum grey. The effect was amazing and made an immediate, huge >

difference; it picked up the subtle tones of the lagoon in a certain light and amplified the sense of boundless sky, and clouds. It gave the lagoon and the surrounding natural elements such dramatic emphasis that we expanded the palette to include dove greys, pale blues, charcoals… the nuanced shades at play all around us.” Structural changes were simple and effective. Removing side windows immediately granted complete privacy. Repositioning and fully integrating the upstairs verandah and downstairs pool area into the spatial flow established the lagoon as the prime focus. Weather-sensitive attention paid to outside courtyard areas and their fluid inclusion into the whole made the house extremely adaptable. The ethos of simplicity carries through into pivotal features and fixtures too. For example, the placement of the kitchen’s coffee bar means that every day, visitors’ first attention is directed to the lagoon. Decor is deliberately understated so

as not to compete with the natural surroundings, and carefully selected visual punctuation (a wall-mounted canoe, an installation of fishing rods, paddles and surfboards displayed in lieu of artworks) serves as an encouragement to explore the opportunities afforded by the lagoon itself. Because it’s these opportunities that Caroline regards as the real prize. “There’s nothing like just sitting on the beach at nearby Kraal Bay, or spending time as a family stand-up paddle boarding, fishing, kayaking, swimming and surfing,” she says. “We wanted to create an environment through which to take full advantage of these experiences and spend quality time with family and friends – a down-to-earth yet super-comfortable space that’s thoroughly conducive to complete relaxation.”

L I V I N G / D I N I N G R O O M “One of my favourite features of my home is the high ceilings. It gives the appearance that we have so much more space than we really do,” says Catherine. “The skylights are also an amazing feature. I honestly tell my clients you can’t put a price on natural light. You can spend all the money in the world on beautiful furniture but it’s the natural light that will really make it shine!” Sofa from Jardan; rug from Tribe Home; coffee table and armchair from Sarah Ellison; dining table from Urban Couture; artworks from The Art and Framing Company; dining chairs from Clickon Furniture.

To renovate or to demolish? That was the question on the minds of Catherine Heraghty and her husband Adam, as they contemplated how their two-bedroom fibro cottage could support a growing family (which already included young son Hudson and two dogs). So, the Sydney couple asked their longtime friend and local builder, Neil Hipwell of Futureflip, for advice. “Neil said we’d be crazy to renovate such an old house; they’re so hard to work with and often cost more,” Catherine explains. “He suggested a duplex, giving us everything we wanted, plus the bonus of an investment property – a no-brainer, when he put it like that.” While a knockdown-rebuild like this would normally take eight to 18 months, Catherine says, her past work on Neil’s sites had shown her how fast he could get projects done. So, they decided to build two homes in just 12 weeks. Before they could begin construction, five months

were spent finalising plans with the architect, getting Council approval, knocking down trees, removing asbestos, obtaining Neil’s construction certificate to start works, and demolishing the old home. Once building began, Catherine was immediately consumed by selecting finishes, finalising kitchen and laundry plans, and making countless other decisions. “I was on site every single day, answering so many questions,” Catherine recalls. “There was lots of problem-solving on your feet with the tradesmen.” Fortunately, Neil proved a tremendous guide for her decisions. “He’s the kind of builder who’ll suggest doing things in ways that make it easier and more cost-effective to build,” Catherine says. “There are ways of building things, then there are smarter ways. This is something Neil definitely showed us.” Naturally, a build of this intensity had its challenges. The short timeline, for instance, meant it was crucial for the tradesmen to be on site at the right times, and to work around each other. There was not much time for fun with young Hudson,

lots of problem-solving on your feet with the tradesmen." Catherine remembers, as she juggled site matters and client work day and night, and the family lived with Catherine’s in-laws while the build was underway. But the sacrifice was worth it. Within 12 weeks, Catherine’s team miraculously completed the two homes from top to bottom – including the all-important interior design. Catherine embraced a contemporary Australian style for her ‘forever home’, incorporating soft geometric lines and curves, and simple styling that, she says, “feels relaxed, and combines warm and cool colour palettes.”

Considering the small size of the block, Catherine made the most of her concept within each room. The warm/cool contrast, for example, is perfected >

INVESTMENT L I V I N G / D I N I N G R O O M “Being coastal in style, the investment home used lots of textures in the styling, with natural materials and a soft, calming colour palette,” explains Catherine. “I chose this style as I knew it would appeal to the masses if we chose to sell, and would not polarise buyers.” All furniture in the living and dining room from OZ Design Furniture. adore home

K I T C H E N “To ensure we got the right balance in the kitchen, I only applied the custom profile to the back overhead cupboards; I went for plain polyurethane panels everywhere else,” says Catherine. “To warm up the kitchen and break up all of the grey, I introduced a custom-made timber frame that went around the island bench. It gives the impression that the island is more like a dining table, and I like the casual feel that it gives the space. I used ‘Pure White’ from Caesarstone for the benchtops, as I felt it was important to break up all the texture in the cabinetry and tiled splashback, as well as the soft grey.” Bar stools from Relm; pendant lights from Huset; tiles from Di Lorenzo Tiles; artwork from The Art and Framing Company.

half wasn’t an affordable option for the couple, who reluctantly decided to sell upon completion. On the bright side, Catherine confirms the sale covered the entire cost of the build.

For the investment side of the duplex, Catherine designed an appealing coastal look, featuring natural materials and calming hues. “I tried to get texture into everything – the rugs, cushions, bedheads and dining chairs.”

And the timing couldn’t be better – Catherine and Adam are delighted to have baby number two on the way. “We set out to do this whole project because we wanted to expand our family, and it’s finally happened,” she says. “I feel like we’ve come full circle.”

She also selected subway tiles for the kitchen and bathroom to continue the Hamptons-style allure, plus dark floors for wow factor throughout. Unfortunately, keeping the investment property 66

B A T H R O O M S Catherine wanted her bathrooms to reflect a contemporary Australian style. “I deliberately had the small brick art tiles stacked vertically on the feature wall to reinforce the vertical lines in the space,” she explains. “It also gives the sense that the ceilings are higher than what they are.” Loughlin Furniture handcrafted the vanities for all of the bathrooms and the powder room. “I adore everything that Loughlin Furniture do. I am a huge fan of Australian design, and the quality is quite often superior.”

INVESTMENT B A T H R O O M S Catherine chose double herringbone tiles from Di Lorenzo Tiles as the statement feature in the master bathroom and ensuite. “When I was researching laying styles for subway tiles, I came across the double herringbone pattern. I liked that it felt less directional and therefore less busy – a calmer laying style than your standard herringbone. I love the round mirror from Warranbrooke in the ensuite; the round shape speaks of a porthole and relates back to the coastal concept. The timber vanities from Loughlin Furniture are part of their brand-new ‘Staples’ range – a really cost-effective way of using beautiful Australian-made pieces in your home.”

LIVING ROOM

Indoor/outdoor living was the priority when reworking this part of the home. “The old living room was narrow and impractical,” Maria explains. Forgoing a big island bench (“They’re not always the answer,” says Maria) allowed the living area to flow seamlessly into the kitchen, creating a light-filled space. Bi-fold doors open onto the deck and breakfast bar servery. Whitewashed wide plank floors were an obvious choice to meet the beachy brief, and a beaded black chandelier is the hero of the space, balancing the kitchen’s matt black cabinetry.

The old design didn’t match today’s style of living or take advantage of the gorgeous views.

BEFORE > The kitchen was closed off from the living room by the breakfast bar and could only be accessed via a corridor.

2

KITCHEN The dated 1980s-style kitchen was reconfigured into a more practical and modern open-plan design. “We changed the layout a lot,” recalls Maria. “The breakfast bar used to face the living room and access was only via a corridor (where the fridge is now). We turned it into a more functional layout by facing the kitchen towards the outdoor space.” A new gas strut window opens over a stone servery to the deck for easy alfresco entertaining, capitalising on the amazing view out to Noosa Hinterland and Cooroy Mountain.

“We had to use some heavy-duty hardware so that the hanging chair would be suitable for anyone to sit on. This was fixed into a roof beam. Talk to your builder or carpenter before purchasing a hanging chair – it might save you from headaches later,” advises Maria.

BEFORE >

EXTERIOR At the back of the house, a generous 5.2m x 8.6m deck was built to take advantage of the Noosa National Park views. “To make it even more enjoyable all year round, we added an insulated panel roofing product above the deck in a ‘flyover’ style roof. This helps to cool down the house in summer and adds a sizeable amount of extra usable living space to the house,” says Maria. Looking to create some street appeal, Maria completely changed the tired brick facade by spray-painting the walls in Taubmans ‘Veridian Green’ and painting the roof and gutters in Taubmans Endure ‘Colorbond Surfmist’.

3

The ’80s exterior was dated and lacked street appeal. The front garden also needed a refresh.

*

"Think about street appeal at the beginning of the renovation."

Maria points out that painting directly over the brick was cheaper than rendering. Another budget–savvy move was to keep as many of the plants as possible. “We were fortunate enough to have well-established native plants in the yard to work with,” recalls Maria. “Also – never underestimate the power of laid lawn!” Now it’s the happiest looking home in the street.

Bathers have the option of soaking in the Posh Solus freestanding bath or rinsing off beach sand in the open shower. Matt black tapware and robe hooks keep the look contemporary, while an antique console sourced by Maria has been given new life as a vanity, adding warmth and character to the space. In the tranquil, unfussy ensuite, a beautiful floating Australian hardwood shelf was custom-made for the vanity and paired with a Roca Inspira soft vessel basin. In both bathrooms, touches of greenery and natural textures bring the outdoors in. 76

In keeping with the home’s monochromatic colour palette, the master bedroom was given the same treatment, albeit a little moodier. Making a bold statement in the master, the panelled wall painted in Taubmans ‘All Black’ allows the timber bed and crisp white linen to pop.

A wall between the master bathroom and separate toilet was knocked down to create one larger space.

MARIA'S TOP TIPS 1 Mood board: Having a clear direction is paramount. Assemble all your final product selections on a mood board to help you visualise the overall look. 2 Floor plan: Get your plumber in early to see what plumbing is easy to move and what isn’t. 3 Tiling: Tiles are the best way to make a big impact in a bathroom reno.

Port Stephens is famous for its golden sandy beaches and scenic waterways, and Zenith Beach – framed between two conical headlands – is a great surfing spot during a north-east swell. Follow a timber-slatted walkway lined by dune grasses and you’ll find a beautiful spot to swim while admiring the towering peak of Tomaree Head. Also of note is Shoal Bay’s main beach, the sweeping crescent beach directly inside the bay of Port Stephens perfect for watching the sunrise over the headlands and glimpsing the resident bottlenose dolphins.
