EDITOR’S LETTER

EDITOR LONI PARKER

While I didn’t really want to bring up the c-word, it’s impossible to avoid mentioning the coronavirus; it’s impacted us all. In terms of this winter issue of Adore, we’ve adjusted our content. You’ll notice an absence of travel and gourmet news, for obvious reasons. I’ve temporarily replaced them with gardening news and an outdoor tour (if you’re a plant hoarder like I am, these may be welcome additions!). 2

FRONT

This issue we dive into the hottest kitchen trends of 2020, and I have to say I’m pretty darn jealous of all the beautiful kitchens we’ve featured (especially the work of Front Porch Properties, pictured on our cover). You see, my own kitchen is a right old mess: cabinetry doors falling off their hinges, an oven that takes an age to heat up, and a speckled pink-and-black granite benchtop that the ’90s can have back, thank you very much! I’m desperate for a kitchen renovation and have already planned the space; now I need to save up for it. If you’re also looking to pull the trigger on a reno, check out our feature from page 14.

I’m sure all of you are navigating changes during this strange time. For many (although not for me!), working from home is something new; that’s why we’ve gathered helpful tips from folks who’ve been doing it for years. I hope their pearls of wisdom come in handy for some of you. To those who’ve lost their jobs: hang in there. 2020 is going to test us all, but when we come out on the other side, we’ll all be so much more appreciative of the little things we took for granted.

let in the light Lighting is a super important element to consider when designing a kitchen. Architect Victoria Vine of Avenue Studios has thoughtfully composed this indoor/outdoor zone to be a complete natural light trap utilising a number of key architectural components. The pitched ceiling with generously sized fixed windows coupled with skylights hovering above the dining and alfresco really allows the daylight to flood through. The kitchen designed by Loretta Wilson of Lowi Interiors makes the most of a neutral palette of cool whites, textured stone and timber to bounce around all that natural light. Artificial lighting in the form of ‘Kymi’ wall lights by Astro feature above the kitchen shelving.

OPEN SHELVING, A PRACTICAL BENCHTOP AND STORAGE DRAWERS (ALONG WITH SPACE FOR A MICROWAVE) MEANS THIS PANTRY CONCEALED BEHIND BI-FOLD DOORS WORKS JUST AS HARD AS A BUTLER’S PANTRY. ON THE PLUS SIDE, THIS STYLE TAKES UP LESS SPACE, AND BULKY APPLIANCES CAN BE HIDDEN FROM PLAIN VIEW.

INTERIOR DESIGN LOWI INTERIORS / PHOTOGRAPHY AARON BUSCH / ARCHITECTURE AVENUE STUDIO

“They introduce a subtle wash of artificial light, enhancing the mood and enlarging the space at night whilst also offering an understated textural element during the day,” says Loretta. “All remaining lighting selections were chosen to offer functionality in the evening whilst almost disappearing during the day.”

Ceiling-height cabinetry is a sure way to get a slick, designer-look kitchen (plus who wants to clean dusty cabinet tops?). OVERHEAD HANGING STORAGE

IT WAS POPULAR IN MID-CENTURY KITCHENS AND NOW WE’RE SEEING THE RE-EMERGENCE OF OVERHEAD CABINETRY OVER THE ISLAND, ALBEIT OPEN HANGING STORAGE FOR A MORE CONTEMPORARY LOOK. INTERIOR DESIGNER LYDIA MASKIELL SAYS ENCLOSED OVERHEADS OVER THE ISLAND “WOULD HAVE FELT TOO MUCH LIKE A BARRIER BETWEEN THE KITCHEN AND LIVING ROOM”. “OPEN SHELVING WORKS REALLY WELL. IT GIVES THE CLIENT A SPACE FOR HER BELOVED PLANTS. PLUS, IT’S ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY FOR MORE STORAGE OF THINGS THAT NEED TO BE EASILY ACCESSIBLE,” SAYS LYDIA.

18

Lydia’s top tips are: “only use floor-to-ceiling cabinetry where the ceiling is flat; it can be awkward with raked or irregular ceilings. I also only keep cabinetry to a maximum height of 2700mm, as cabinetry feels too heavy if it exceeds this height.”

modern farmhouse

It’s hard to believe this kitchen is a flat pack. Front Porch Properties has customised this Kaboodle kitchen for a client’s dream home. To achieve the popular modern farmhouse aesthetic, they’ve used raw shaker-profile cabinet fronts and spray painted them in Sherwin Williams ‘Evergreen Fog’. Also essential to the rustic farmhouse look are the Victorian ash island benchtop and open shelves. “I love the casual dining nook at the end of the island with our custom timber legs,” explains Front Porch Properties’ builder Rachael Turner. “Little extra details like that are what really helps to make a flat-pack kitchen look custom.”

The brief from GlobeWest for the renovation and expansion of their Brisbane showroom by Archie Bolden was to create a space that was open and inviting.

Interior designer Hayley Richards says an open island bench is a total winner from both aesthetic and practical standpoints. “It’s practical in that it pushes all plumbing and services to your back cabinetry, usually resulting in a great cost saving as it groups all the services onto the same line,” says Hayley. “Aesthetically, by keeping all solid elements and equipment against the wall, the island is inherently lightened.”

terrazzo

Terrazzo has made a massive comeback in recent times and is popping up everywhere from bathroom floors to kitchen benchtops. Photographer Martina Gemmola and her husband Ari commissioned Cantilever Interiors to design their dream kitchen and chose terrazzo benchtops. “It’s my pride and joy,” says Martina. “Our heritage is a mix of Greek and Italian, so the terrazzo is a little nod to our ancestry. Terrazzo is considered the poor man’s marble in Europe—it is literally everywhere. I love the way it wears down and shows signs of the people living amongst it. Just be sure to make sure you triple seal that terrazzo.”

MAKING USE O F S M A L L S PAC E S Concealed behind a pocket door, this pantry is small but mighty. “We have a combination of benchtop, open adjustable shelves and heavy-duty drawers,” says Martina. “The drawers hold so much weight—65kgs each. Our appliances sit comfortably in there and they’re easily accessible. The mixer and food processor sit on the small benchtop in the pantry so they can be used in there, without needing to drag them out.”

17

18 open shelves

Your story is always in style, which is what makes open shelving the perfect look for the heart of your home. “What makes a house a home is the layering of personal items and collectibles that resonate with you and your family,” says Sydney-based Designory director Melissa Bonney. She recommends replacing overhead kitchen cabinets with open shelving and filling them with beautiful ceramics, freshening plants, and collectibles such as art, ornaments, vases or coral.

TIMBER BAT T E N S

23

Looking to give your kitchen island standout warmth, texture and interest like the above (pictured)? Timber battens are the answer. “The battens surrounding the island were custom made then individually secret-fixed,” says Melissa Bonney. “A labour of love, but worth the effort.” The battens also provide cohesiveness with other timber features and doors throughout the home.

half & half

So, you’ve got your heart set on two different colours for your kitchen cabinetry but you simply can’t decide. Why not have the best of both worlds? The half-and-half trend is still going strong in kitchens today—it’s a great chance to display two contrasting or complementing colours together. In this instance black and white has been used by GIA Renovations to dramatic effect.

“Black and white is timeless. The colour palette is extremely diverse and can complement a range of kitchen styles including industrial, contemporary or traditional.” - KIA HOWAT, INTERIOR DESIGNER, GIA RENOVATIONS 26

V-GROOVE CABINETRY

Complementing modern kitchens, V-groove cabinetry inserts just the right touch of interest without becoming outdated. Catherine Heraghty of Sydney-based The Stables says V-groove cabinetry “not only adds the perfect amount of subtle texture, but is also timeless and easy to live with”. Catherine selected V-groove cabinetry for one half of this kitchen and plain-panelled joinery for the other. “Sometimes V-groove can be too much when used in abundance,” she says. “Having plain panelling on the (opposite) doors and drawers helps offset the texture of the V-groove on the other side.”

Natural handcrafted finishes are key to achieving refined old-world charm in the kitchen. Here, Georgia Ezra of Melbourne-based Studio Ezra follows her Mediterranean passion to pale timbers, Moroccan zellige ceramic tiles and Caesarstone quartz surfaces. “I wanted to create a bespoke look inspired by Morocco and Spain, but functionality was at the forefront,” says Georgia.

WORK FROM HOME

WORK from home For many, working from home is new territory. We’ve sought out words of wisdom from those who’ve been doing it for years.

36

CREATE A DEDICATED WORK ZONE “Have a dedicated workspace away from distractions and include little moments that fill you up,” says interior designer and stylist Kate Moss. “Personal treasures, a burning candle and fresh flowers bring me joy, but make sure it doesn’t get too cluttered. A clear desk equals a clear mind.” Product developer Catherine Slatter agrees. “Put a plant or fresh cuttings or flowers on your desk–it makes you want to be there and enjoy the space and it keeps the area feeling fresh,” says Catherine, whose home office is pictured opposite. Architect Kitty Lee works from her spare bedroom. “This is where I have my desk and a very comfy chair set up next to the balcony, so there is plenty of fresh air and natural light,” says Kitty. “Everything I need to keep me focused on work is organised in this room to ensure I’m not spending time distracted in other rooms throughout the day.”

AVOID DISTRACTIONS Start by eliminating the obvious distractions like TV and social media. Turn the telly off, and hide the phone away. “I find that if my phone is on my desk during working hours, I tend to hop on Instagram to trawl for inspiration, only to go down a rabbit hole and an hour later realise I completely wasted my time,” says editor of Adore Home Loni Parker. “I find keeping the phone in another room stops me from procrastinating.”

For owner of Interiors Addict Jen Bishop, it’s all about efficiency. “Because I’m currently juggling working from home with two small kids I find that efficiency is everything, whether that’s getting up a bit earlier for an hour of power before they wake, or banning checking emails and other notifications until the task in hand is complete,” says Jen. “I also like to give myself little incentives to get things finished, like the next coffee!”

‘Puzzle’ desk priced from $279 norsu.com.au

Having a regular work routine can also help keep productivity up. “Start work at set times and stop for lunch,” says product developer Catherine Slatter. “I prepare it the night before to save wasting time in the kitchen.”

MAKE A LIST “I write a new to-do list every evening for the following day and make sure I set the hardest tasks first,” says interior designer and stylist Kate Moss. “Wanting to tick something off my list is quite often my motivation to finish the task. Small wins… but the satisfaction is definitely underrated!” Kate notes it’s important to set a realistic list. “Don’t overestimate what you can get done in a day,” advises Kate. “Try to avoid pushing out your work hours and set a schedule with an achievable work load.” Architect Kitty Lee also recommends to-do lists. “I love lists and lists within lists. Being able to tick off smaller tasks keeps me motivated and helps me feel like I’m making progress on bigger tasks,” says Kitty.

String system shelving is used here for convenient and practical open storage. Available from Arrival Hall.

“I start my day with emails as I like to stay on top of things. Once I’ve responded to an email, I file it away so that I don’t have to come back to it later. This means that I have very few emails in my inbox, which definitely helps to clear my headspace.” – KITTY LEE, ARCHITECT

Long periods of sitting in front of the computer will make you feel lethargic and unproductive. Don’t feel guilty about taking little breaks, advises interior designer and stylist Kate Moss. “I schedule in lunch breaks and a walk for fresh air (insert essential podcast to keep me inspired) so I don’t feel guilty when I take them. Sometimes I even schedule in half an hour of house cleaning; whatever works for you,” says Kate. For editor of Adore Home, Loni Parker, doing five-minute chores every hour or so keeps the house looking tidy and is a good chance to get up and move, thus invigorating the brain. “I have also recently scheduled in a 20-minute YouTube workout at around 3pm,” says Loni. “This is the time of day I’m usually feeling tired, and I find the workout helps to give me new energy to power me through the rest of the afternoon.”

HOME TOUR

It’s fair to say that when Ivy Huang, a professional project manager in business, purchased what she thought would be her forever family home, it was in need of modernising. Before Ivy’s purchase, the Edwardian cottage was last sold half a century ago. Her vision was to design a home for her growing family and create an “urban oasis” that has the feeling of being on holidays. “I wanted there to be relaxed, private retreats for resting, with open shared spaces for living, and many indoor/outdoor moments,” says Ivy. Because she didn’t have a design background, Ivy invested a huge amount of time in researching every aspect of the house design, from heights and dimensions of every piece of joinery to what feelings different colours invoke. As well as studying the technicalities of the job ahead, Ivy spent a lot of time developing an understanding of the heritage of the home and why homes were built in this certain way back then. “I didn’t simply want to ‘pay homage’ to it, I wanted to bring those key architectural elements through the entire home for an absolutely effortless transition between new and old, inside and out,” says Ivy. The build ended up taking eight months from demolition to moving in after a year of design, planning and permits. Originally she planned to do it over a number of years, but was swept away in the project. The main inspiration of the renovation was the existing Edwardian cottage with its lofty proportions of 3.5-metre-high ceilings (a feature Ivy learned was typical in architecture of this period). In keeping with its heritage, Ivy reinstated leadlight windows with Edwardian motifs, restored two cast iron fireplaces to working order and lavishly complemented these with new marble hearths. All door heights were increased to 2.4 metres high, a move Ivy thinks has been a total game-changer in creating a sense of grandeur throughout. The height of grandeur in the home is arguably the six-metre-high cathedral ceiling in the open-plan living and dining area, which is one of the extensions added. To create the indoor/outdoor feel Ivy wanted, it opens onto the lush backyard. >

While the home is objectively stunning, for a beginner renovator Ivy says there were some challenges. “To be honest, most of it was difficult!” she laughs. “The most challenging part of every business or project always comes down to people. I came across some dishonest people (one actual conman!), and I found some people to be condescending because of my age and gender, or lack of experience.” But, the process appealed to her entrepreneurial spirit and Ivy says she loved that the experience combined technical, financial and creative skill sets. So much so that she realised that she wanted it to be more than just a one-off thing, or even a side hustle. “I always grew up believing I was not a creative type,” Ivy says. “‘I have the creativity of a brick!’ I would tell people. Through this project I came to the realisation that I had a lot of self-limiting beliefs that I see a lot among women, including myself.” But that’s in the past for Ivy as after this project, she’s turning renovating into a full-time gig.

K I T C H E N M A K E O V E R “We are so proud of the kitchen because we were able to completely transform this room without going crazy on the budget,” says Tiffany. “We took down some upper cabinets in favour of open shelving, rounded off the island with a DIY ribbed effect, and refaced our existing cabinets. It looks like a very high-end kitchen, but was done in a budget-conscious way.” Pendant lights from Triple Seven Home.

B A N Q U E T T E D I N I N G “We want guests to feel like they are stepping into the chicest little coffee shop in town,” says Tiffany. To acheive that look a custom tufted bench seat runs the length of the window and is paired with three small dining tables and candy-pink chairs from CB2–giving the space café vibes.

Autumn Hachey was “obsessed” with Airbnbs, particularly after leaving her five-year marketing career to follow her love of interior design. So when homeowners contacted her in May 2019 to redecorate their future accommodation–a two-storey home on the coast of Lake Huron, Ontario–Autumn’s next big venture was born. “I suggested we not only take care of the design, but also the branding and marketing–a unique turn-key package,” says Autumn, who also owns Toronto-based furnishings retailer Make Moves Vintage. With the homeowners in agreement, Autumn soon decided to start her own company named Stay Here; dedicated to helping Airbnb owners market, brand and decorate their lodging. For the lodging’s interior makeover, Autumn chose to collaborate with local interior designer Tiffany Piotrowski of Tiffany Leigh Design. Long admired by Autumn, Tiffany had renovated her own Airbnb the previous year. The pair then met with Canadian consulting agency Studio Bicyclette to determine the branding of the accommodation. This spawned the home’s new moniker, ‘Summer House’, which would inspire the future interior.

@tiffanyleighdesign

Nestled in the tiny beach town of Southampton, Summer House comprised three bedrooms, a main bathroom, a powder room and an open-plan kitchen/living/ dining area. “The home had a cute layout with builder-basic finishes,” recalls Tiffany. “Think wall-to-wall carpeting, stucco ceilings, greeny-grey paint and basic cabinetry.” Destined for a fresher look, the home would undergo the ultimate transformation into a beachy boutique accommodation with “spa” sophistication, thanks to Autumn and Tiffany. Haute highlights from this home-away-from-home would include a bistro café dining nook, a curved kitchen peninsula, and unique custom bedroom headboards, to name a few. The colour palette, meanwhile, would answer the call of the coastal with bright whites, sandy tones, pinky nudes and light aqua hues. “We played with texture and lines to add interest,” says Tiffany. “You’ll see curves everywhere in this house, from our rounded peninsula to the curved sectional sofa, to the light fixtures. Even the ribbed detail on our island and banquette is evocative of a half-moon.” >

With a revamp of this extent, staying within budget was the biggest test, says Tiffany. “We got creative with DIYs, called in favours from industry friends and planned very strategically about how to spend the money to have the biggest impact.” But triumph they did–especially in the kitchen, which was made to appear high-end through simple yet imaginative design choices. These included replacing the upper cabinets with open shelving, refacing the lower cabinets and giving the rounded island a ribbed effect– “one of our favourite DIYs ever,” says Autumn. “We were able to achieve that look with halfround dowels, nails, glue and paint. It only cost our homeowners $400,” she adds. Another standout solution? The 1970s sectional sofa in the living area–a fabulous find from Autumn’s own store, Make Moves Vintage. “I was saving this piece for the perfect project,” Autumn says. “We had it reupholstered in an indoor/outdoor fabric to make it super durable.” Completed in February 2020, Summer House is officially open as an Airbnb where relaxation reigns through clever, captivating design choices. “We want guests to feel relaxed yet energised, inspired creatively, and a little bit playful,” says Tiffany. “It’s a vacation home, and the goal is for people to come here and let their troubles slip away for a few days while enjoying all of the little design details.”

A I R Y L I V I N G R O O M Jessi cites the living room as being her favourite space. “The combination of those pitched ceilings, French doors and oak floors is just so breathtakingly beautiful, says Jessi. “I love the styling of this space too. That coffee table, linen sofa and rug against a backdrop of floor-to-ceiling pretties is hard to beat!”

66

In this impressive Los Angeles home, expansive light-filled rooms are anchored by carefully curated decor, texture and colour. “It was important to ensure the spaces felt cosy and homely whilst still maintaining the sense of abundant open space,” says stylist Jessi Eve. When she was asked to style the home for a busy young family, Jessi jumped at the chance. It already had great bones, she points out: “Oak timber floors, white walls, pitched ceilings with exposed beams, French doors – everything I could ever ask to work with really!” Jessi is based in Australia, but her eStyling service enables her to work with clients all over the world. “I had helped this client with some decorative elements for their previous home, so when they moved, they hired me again to do the lot,” she explains. She did much of the work from Australia, then flew to the States to finish the project. “I spent three weeks in LA sourcing final touches and installing all the furniture, art and decor – as well as exploring all the tourist spots, of course!”

Jessi was given the freedom to work from scratch, sourcing everything from the furniture right down to the cutlery. “Every tiny detail was considered as a part of the greater whole.” The home’s distinctive dining table came with the property. “Given how beautiful it is and the amazing condition it was in, we decided to make good use of it! I also love that there is a central piece of furniture that has been passed on from the previous owners and adapted to serve the new inhabitants of the home.” The interior blends sunny Californian vibes with Jessi’s own laidback luxe Aussie style. In keeping with the breezy Cali Cool aesthetic, Jessi opted for “lots of white and light natural elements with pops of muted candy colours such as pink, orange, yellow, teal and blue, offset with luxe brass accents”. She cultivated a bohemian feel by layering textures: “vintage rugs, cushions and throws, rattan furniture, floor cushions, soft linens and live greenery”. The home’s living room is a showstopper packed with elegant details. Its soaring ceiling is deftly adore home

balanced with horizontal elements: a low-slung linen couch, circular Mother of Pearl inlay coffee table, and full-length shelving displaying an artful mix of objects and greenery. “I didn’t want to disturb the feeling of airy openness that the high ceilings created by using dark or heavy furniture and decor,” Jessi explains. “I chose wall art that wasn’t going to interrupt the eye on its way up to those stunning ceilings but instead gently guide the eye towards the architectural features of the home. The same theory applied with the entire wall of open shelving. I kept the palette light and simple and positioned the visually heavier objects and vignettes in a way that draws the eye up.” Although she focused on creating flow and cohesion through her styling choices, Jessi was also careful to avoid predictability or overkill. “Balance is important in ensuring a space doesn’t become too OTT or themed. For example, I’ve used brass accents as an important style element of this interior but to the eye it’s merely a subtle detail that appears sporadically throughout the home.” While designing an interior from the other side of the globe wasn’t without its challenges, Jessi says the fact that her clients trusted her completely was vital to her success. “They really just let me do my thing and I feel the results are reflective of that.”

Focus on the feeling.

Cali-cool is all about a light, sunny and breezy vibe. It’s about achieving that holiday feeling all year ‘round in your own home.

Keep the palette fresh.

Use lots of white and light timber tones as your base. Add pops of muted or pastel hues in the styling for a bit of playful, sunshiney fun.

Add greenery.

Indoor greenery will lift a space instantly. Use plants such as palms and cacti that are in keeping with the types of plants found from the Californian coastline right across to the desert.

Go natural.

Introduce natural materials and textures such as timber and rattan furniture, sisal rugs and linen furnishings. These materials will ground an otherwise white and bright interior and also add to the relaxed feel that Cali-cool is all about.

Mathews’ home and eventual rental lodging. With their move-out date just weeks away, Simone and Ben had to act fast and on a tight budget, given their uncertainty of the property’s long-term future. So, Ben and his team commenced the remodel on Melbourne Cup Day.

R E P U R P O S E D K I T C H E N “With our timing being so close to Christmas, we didn’t have the time to wait for a cabinet maker to build a kitchen and laundry,” Simone recalls. “We had to improvise and create our own kitchen. A local café in Berry was closing down and I had always loved their fit-out. I took the gamble and purchased this for around $3,000. Ben was able to repurpose it and it was literally built and painted in two days!” Kitchen Island by T&C Furniture; stools from Inartisan; pendant light and kitchenware from HK Living.

Sometimes fate has a way of bringing us to the right place at the right time. Just ask Simone Mathews, interior designer, holiday property owner and online educator from SOUL Home and co-director of husband Ben’s Sydney-based building company, BAM Construction. In 2018, Simone, Ben and their four young boys were renting a property in the coastal town of Gerringong, a popular tourist destination. Suddenly, the owner notified them of their intention to sell the property. “It was November and long-term rentals are pretty much non-existent at that time of year,” Simone recalls. However, the family happened to own a dilapidated 1800s bungalow—complete with barn doors, shiplap walls, exposed timber frames, and dramatic ceilings. Housing two bedrooms, a small kitchenette, bathroom, and shed/ storage space, it sat next door to the family’s popular farmhouse accommodation, the Soul of Gerringong. Despite the home’s tired state, “there was so much character in the original materials and just something about how the space made us feel,” Simone remembers. The timing couldn’t have been better to renovate it as the

“It was really fun—like our own mini The Block,” says Simone. “We were working against the clock. There was pressure, but we used it as a challenge.” Renovating the cottage with time and budget constraints meant simple floor changes, reusing and repurposing as much as possible, she says. A top layer and polish would renew the original concrete floors and, although time and expense would disallow the shiplap walls to be salvaged, the decrepit barn doors could be rebuilt, using existing wall timber. Another recycled solution, the new kitchen would comprise of the timber shelving, benches and door fronts from a local café closure—sold to Simone for around $3,000. Simone also reworked the floorplan to accommodate families. “Everything was created around what was the shed/storage area and is now the living area,” says Simone. “This space would be the heart of the home and work hard, as it includes the living/dining area, kitchen pantry, laundry and powder room.” By dividing the home into two wings separated by a hallway, Simone implemented the all-encompassing living area on one end, and an intimate sleeping area on the other. This would include a master bedroom with ensuite >

and two bedrooms separated by a main bathroom.

To style the interior, Simone used her ‘70/20/10 rule’: “You have 70 percent of one style, 20 percent of another, and a final 10 per cent that brings it all together,” she says. “So, for the cottage, it was 70 percent rustic, 20 percent coastal and 10 percent classic … respecting the past and creating a new personality for today.” Timeless natural timbers evoke a pastoral presence with everlasting durability, as seaside elegance flourishes through the comfy wicker furnishings and white walls of the nature-inspired colour palette, which also features greenery throughout. And because fun never goes out of style, each bedroom boasts colour bursts through linens or artwork. Now back in Sydney and sharing the Soul Cottage with holidaymakers, Simone admits that although the scheduled completion didn’t work out perfectly— “we moved in with no main bathroom (until the following year)”—it was still perfect for her family. “A home should make you feel good. And that is what this renovation allowed for our family,” says Simone.

After being a rental for 30 years, this family created their home’s now lush garden from the ground up.

GARDEN TOUR

When this home in Jan Juc in Victoria’s coastal suburb of Torquay went up for sale four years ago, artist Prudence Caroline and husband Damian Oliveri jumped at the chance to buy it. All of the drawcards of the home aside, the couple had a special connection to the home as it was built by Pru’s parents back in the ’80s, and it hadn’t been touched since the family lived there. The garden is a very special feature of the home as floor-to-ceiling glass facilitates an impressive indoor/outdoor experience from the dining room to the lounge. When Pru and Damian bought the home, the garden was scarce and original features like the timber pergola were rotten and unsalvageable. There was a grape vine, and “one olive tree in the back corner of the house that we pulled up and replanted two months later,” says Pru. “Now it’s flourishing!” Olive tree aside, every plant you see in the garden is new. “We had to level off the ground so nothing stayed,” says Pru. “The block was on such a slope we barely had any useable land. We purchased a lot of established trees and hedging lilly-pillies for privacy.” The couple started the landscaping with mapping

out where the larger trees would go, and then moved onto smaller plants. “We aimed to plant in clusters and use plants of similar tones like white flowers paired with silver and green foliage,” says Pru. The garden features an impressive array of out-ofthe-box plant choices that are balanced beautifully: wisteria in the courtyard, Korean box, westringia, blue chalk stick, dichondra ground cover, poa grass, white hydrangea, assorted succulents, and silver birch, Chinese elm and olive trees. Pru says they were aiming for a coastal but polished look with the garden design. “I chose plants that I love, in my colour scheme, and that survive the harsh costal environment in Jan Juc.” Elements of the design also echo the plant choices. Pru explains, “We wanted the lines of the garden to be organic–we like buxus balls, so the circular lawns echo these.” With all of these exotic plants, it’s a surprise what Pru says her favourite thing about the garden is. “The herb garden–picking herbs with the kids before dinner is my favourite thing.” Perhaps Pru and Damian’s children will buy the home in 30 years’ time.
