EDITOR’S LETTER

EDITOR LONI PARKER This issue marks quite the milestone: it’s our 20th printed issue of Adore Home Magazine! What started as an online-only publication way back in 2010 has grown into a printed magazine available in newsagents right across Australia. We haven’t abandoned our online and international readers though; digital copies are available to buy through Issuu. And – another milestone close to my heart – my laundry renovation is finally complete. What was once a dank, mouldy and unusable space complete with leaking taps and exposed copper pipes (no, not the cool industrial kind) is now a bright, functional space. That’s not to say there weren’t compromises along the way. I chose lots of storage over a dryer, so I’m at the mercy of Mother Nature; I only wash clothes on sunny days. Thank goodness I live in Queensland. I will say this though: the laundry budget caught me completely off guard. I went in naively thinking I’d spend no more than $4,000 on this space. I spent that on the custom cabinetry and engineered stone 2

top alone – whoops. All of the other products and trades needed on top of that came in at close to $8,000 – and that doesn’t even include replacing the hot water system, which conveniently stopped working on the day we moved in (the opposite of a housewarming gift!).

get my

LAUNDRY STYLE

But was it worth the money? Absolutely. Washing clothes is now my favourite chore and I love hanging out in the laundry! The master bedroom is almost complete and work is underway in the guest room. After that, I’ve got my sights set on the kitchen. Given my laundry blowout I might need to look at some budget flat-pack alternatives… With the silly season almost upon us, I’d like to wish you all a restful summer holiday and a happy new year. Thanks for your loyalty over the years – here’s to another 20 issues.

The Family Love Tree, a favourite retailer of homewares and rattan and cane furniture, recently gave us a couple more reasons to adore them. After seven years in business, they’ve just relocated – as a store (Love Tree Interiors) and café – into the iconic Holywells Terrace building in Prahran, Melbourne. Constructed in the 18th century, the Chapel Street building offers two storeys of Victorian-era charm. “We are the first to lease the building in over 100 years,” says owner, creative director and manager Katie Graham. “We saw an opportunity to relocate the showroom and open two new businesses, as the building has two front entrances – one for the retail store, the other for the café.” Meanwhile, Katie utilises the upstairs area as a safe co-working space for women. The store’s new interiors are the result of a collaboration with local interior designer Sarah Kennedy. While Sarah designed the floor plan and joinery of the showroom and the all-new Kookaburra’s Kanteen, the longtime colleagues worked on the finishes together. “Sarah understands the Love Tree’s aesthetics and need for practical storage,” Katie remarks. “Her designs are simple and will stand the test of time without dating.”

*

Complete with whitewashed walls, the urban-style display area is what Katie calls a “blank canvas” for highlighting their selection of bedheads, tables, chairs and more. She adds that “the joinery really helps to showcase the product, as does our long, curved counter, which includes an interior design service desk and built-in storage for fabric and > wallpaper hangers”.

“We design and supply unique furniture, which is ethically and sustainably handmade.”

STORE PROFILE

The Family Love Tree’s signature peachy palette, rounded edges and rattan accents continue into Kookaburra’s Kanteen, the addition of which Katie deems “a revelation”: “We can showcase our furniture inside the café, and the flow between the two entices people to drop in for brunch, then shop – a blend of retail and food that complement each other.”

Visit the new showroom at 200-202 Chapel St, Prahan Melbourne.

>

The in-store experience is also a step up from the previous location, now offering a designated design desk, available by appointment. “We can create a simple room design, customise cushions or assist with wallpaper and drapery,” Katie explains. The showroom will be regularly refreshed with stock from The Family Love Tree and other Australian brands, including Kip&Co, Sage and Clare, and Jones & Co. “They are all uniquely designed but work well together as a mix-and-match,” Katie says. What more could you fall in love with at the new digs? How about Katie’s number-one reason we should choose to shop there: “We design and supply unique furniture, which is ethically and sustainably handmade.”

DESIGNER PROFILE

“I am surrounded by the most inspiring, funny, smart-ashell women every day.”

Interior designer Alanna Smit and her husband Mike will never forget the day they started major renovations on their home in 2012; it happened to be the same day their youngest son Sam was born. “When I came home from hospital, we had three kids under three-and-a-half, and it was a hole-in-the-ground type work site with a plank of timber for access running through the neighbour’s property… Fun times!” Alanna says. Renovations took two years to complete, transforming the original cottage into a breezy, plantation-style stunner. While Alanna’s style is eclectic, she says it’s very curated; she is fussy about what she collects. Some of her treasured pieces include her sofa, which you’d never guess is more than 25 years old. “It belonged to one of my best friend’s mothers,” Alanna says. “It’s a classic luxurious shape. It was an ‘old lady’ sofa when I was 20-something. Sadly, I think I’ve finally grown into it.” “Then there’s my original Gervasoni pendant in the kitchen and the Malibu chandelier in the foyer (that almost cost me my marriage!) but I love them,” she says. Tying the home’s interior to its exterior spaces are a selection of hearty plants including yukkas, jade and succulents. While the family’s backyard is relatively small, what it lacks in size it makes up for in amenity, with its custom peek-a-boo barbecue and servery, which can also > 18

be used as an outdoor cinema.

Although it seems like a home you’d never want to leave, Alanna says she needed to get out of the home office, “out of active wear and to feel like an adult again”, so she and best friend Zoe started Cove Creatives, based in what they’ve made into a gorgeous beachside studio space. Cove Creatives operates as a collective, in addition to servicing individual clients. “I am surrounded by the most inspiring, funny, smart-as-hell women every day,” Alanna says. “I couldn’t design a more perfect working environment if I tried.”

DON’T MATCH I don’t think you should buy a matched set of furniture. That’s the expected and almost old-fashioned way of designing your patio. I think it should be curated using different pieces. For instance: a pair of teak armchairs that have a different shape to your sofa and even different colour cushions; a stone-topped coffee table that’s more unexpected than the usual matching wood piece; and for side tables, vintage finds or – in the case of my Harbour Outdoor collection — natural wood stumps.

CHOOSE TEXTURE I believe texture creates the most interest in a setting. In the case of the MLB collection, I have chosen honed marble with a chipped-edge effect to create natural textural interest, and travertine, which has a beautiful texture of its own that is indigenous to the stone.

GO FOR COMFORT I love romantic spaces that ooze comfort and invite you to lounge. Comfort is always king and rules the final decision!

After a decade at the helm of holiday accommodation Cape Beach House, hospitality industry stalwarts Katie and Marc Wilson sought out The Stables’ Catherine Heraghty to oversee an extensive renovation. The guesthouse previously included five self-contained rooms and a communal living area and kitchen. “We removed one bedroom and turned this into a laundry, powder room and stairwell,” explains Catherine. A second storey with one bedroom, ensuite, living, dining and kitchen was also added for Katie and Marc to live in. Twelve months of planning was followed by an intensive five-month build. “In total, the project included five bedrooms, six bathrooms, two kitchens, two living spaces and two dining areas – along with all furniture, styling, design of joinery, and finish selection,” Catherine says. “It was big!” Despite the enormity of the project, Catherine was well

Following Katie and Marc’s Hamptons brief, Catherine envisioned a sophisticated coastal style that balanced the characteristics of the property’s Byron Bay location. “We had to be mindful of what guests expect when they visit Byron Bay,” she points out. “It’s a way of life – a lifestyle that people are attracted to – so we chose elements that were uniquely Hamptons but pulled it back for a laidback, Australian coastal feel.” Cape Beach House is nestled amongst tropical palms and native bush opposite Clarkes Beach. Bifold doors open up onto decks and outdoor areas, and windows take advantage ofthe leafy views. In keeping with the building’s surroundings, Catherine favoured natural finishes and fabrics, opting for plenty of linen, cotton, timber and rattan throughout. Catherine says Cape Beach House mirrors her signature style: light and bright with clean lines. “I tend to avoid patterns and bold colour, relying instead on muted tones and palettes, while adding texture and warmth > adore home

through finishes, joinery, tiles and soft furnishings.” Rattan is used throughout the house’s furnishing and interiors. For the kitchen joinery, pantry doors with a custom Shaker profile were carefully pared back with stunning rattan inlays. “I chose the rattan months ago and was not sure how it was going to look, so to see it in situ made me so happy.” For all the joinery work, Catherine collaborated with U-Neek Interior Solutions from Sydney. “They do all of my work and, with so much involved, it was vital all the details were perfect – the finish selections, the colours, and of course the design.” Kitchen and bathroom tiles, which Catherine says are a major component of the interior’s overall look, were chosen from Di Lorenzo for their handmade textural appeal. So how do Katie and Marc feel now the renovation is complete? “We couldn’t be happier with the outcome and have been overwhelmed by the wonderful feedback we are getting from our guests. “There’s something about the imperfect quality of the original floorboards that I love so much.” house and boathouse.”

K I T C H E N “The original kitchens were stripped out and taken away by a river barge, and our new cabinetry arrived the same way or via the inclinator lift,” explains Vivian.

It was love at first sight for interior designer Vivian Panagos and her husband David when they first viewed the property that they now call home. Struck by its river views, they imagined an outdoorsy lifestyle where they could happily raise their family.

“The new kitchen was designed with a bi-fold cabinet to hide away appliances such as the microwave, toaster and kettle when they’re not in use. The splashback tiles were a roadside find. They were being given away and we scooped them up and were able to reuse them here,” says Vivian.

The young family spent two years renovating the main house and the boathouse – not a job for the faint-hearted, as access to the home was tricky. All materials had to come down via the inclinator lift, which Vivian says has made the family rethink how much stuff they really need to live with.

D I N I N G “The dining room was presented as the living space when we purchased the property but we felt switching the spaces around made better sense for the layout,” says Vivian.

While they were happy with the bones of the house, Vivian and David painted every wall and ceiling, added new kitchens, updated bathrooms, and incorporated an extra bedroom in the main house. “We also added much-needed lighting to the exterior and updated the interior lighting,” Vivian says. “We changed the decking material to ModWood, which is suitable for our bushfire zone, and added Scyon weatherboard to the

“The kitchen now has white Shaker cabinets with brass handles and marble knobs. I designed the rangehood and my husband built it. I’m obsessed with our black Smeg cooker; I love to cook.” The couple also tore out the existing floorboards to reveal the original flooring, which they painted white. “There’s something about the imperfect quality of the original floorboards that I love so much,” Vivian says. The boys’ bedrooms are upstairs in the house and each features a new built-in wardrobe, wool carpets and linen bedding. “In one of the boys’ rooms, his bedhead has been made in a House of Hackney fabric that I’ve been dying to use, and his bedsides are terrazzo,” explains Vivian. Also upstairs is a guest room, a main bathroom (which has been updated with a mix of white mosaic tiles, a marbletopped vanity and brass fittings) and the kitchen and living space. The living area’s large glass windows make the most of the views, leading onto a deck that overlooks the river. Downstairs, the master bedroom is a private haven. D I N I N G A commissioned wall hanging by Woven Husk takes centre stage in the dining room and sets the tone for the rest of the decor. “As soon as I saw the piece, I just fell in love with it,” Maria recalls. Stool and chairs from LOFT Furniture Noosa; custom-made dining table from Cast in Concrete Design Noosa.

There are views and then there are views. Perched high on a ridge overlooking Coolum Beach, the vista from Maria and Jason Baron’s recent renovation project is dramatic. From this elevated position above lush treetops, a majestic 180-degree swathe of aquamarine is visible from nearly every room in the house. It was the ocean view that drew Maria and Jason to the property, but they also saw potential in the characterful original home, built in the 1980s by the previous owner and held by the same family for two generations. The house – “a classic timber beach shack” – had been on the market for a while. “It was probably a bit overwhelming and too much of a project for most potential buyers,” Maria muses. Undeterred, she and Jason took the plunge after some careful planning and renovated the home (naming it ‘Salty Views’) before reselling it. Maria and Jason are the husband-and-wife powerhouse behind Black and White Projects, and already have a string of successful renovation projects behind them. “Being a good renovator means you need to be a good problem solver,” Maria says, explaining that they each have defined roles in their business. “Jason coordinates the project and keeps an eye on the budget and timeline, and I do all the design and styling.” “Our goal was to restore the house and add some modern

“Our goal was to restore the house and add some modern elements, while retaining its true character.” elements, while retaining its true character,” she explains. They focused on honouring the laid-back vibe of the house and carefully preserving some of its unique features, including its timber floors and VJ walls. “Hardwood timber-framed houses come with the good and the bad!” says Maria. “Walls aren’t always straight (a nightmare for tilers) and it was labour intensive to restore the original walls and exterior cladding.” While repairs, surface treatments and the addition of trims and skirting boards were tedious and time-consuming, other alterations delivered immediate satisfaction. Incorporating a new ceiling beam allowed them to open the kitchen into the living area. “It makes the kitchen feel so much closer to the ocean,” says Maria. “A new kitchen was a must, so we went for a minimalist look and splurged on the 3.2-metre stone benchtop.” They also reconfigured the floor plan upstairs in order to fit an extra bathroom and replaced all windows and doors with louvres and sliders to capitalise on sea breezes, making the home more sustainable. >

Downstairs, the couple designed an open-ended space that could adapt to the needs of potential buyers. A studio and kitchenette adjoin the original garage area and open onto a generous lower deck. The hero of this level is indisputably the bathroom, with its antique vanity, matte black tapware, doublecavity sliding doors, decadent clawfoot bath and a huge gas-strut window that can be thrown open to the sea.

Throughout the home, monochrome elements are warmed by blackbutt timber sourced from the Noosa Hinterland. “We managed to source some timber that came from a tree that had to be removed from a construction site. It was already milled, dried and ready to go, so we decided to give it a second life,” Maria explains. Treated with a marine-grade satin stain and cut to size on site, pieces from this hefty slab of native wood were used for bench seating, vanities, bath caddies (with wine holders!), benchtops, the master bedhead and more. “We also love using local artists on all our projects,” Maria says. “For ‘Salty Views’, we commissioned Stacy Madden from Woven Husk to craft a piece for the space.” Her work, ‘Noir’, became a living room centrepiece and a styling touchstone – embodying a pared-back beachy aesthetic with a luxurious, contemporary twist.

Sometimes the best people to breathe life into an old home are the family members who made memories there. Just ask George and Bec Douros, contestants on The Block back in 2013, who recently converted George’s 1970s-era childhood home into two modish townhouses. “It was originally George’s father Nick’s idea,” explains Bec of the recent building project, which they’ve dubbed Nick’s Place. “He built the house, so he knew it well.” Nick Douros, a bricklayer, designed and constructed the two-storey Avondale Heights home in 1977 – laying all 40,000 bricks himself. With four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a kitchen/living/dining space, and a billiards room, it was at the heart of years of memories for Nick, his wife Dafni, and their sons George and Michael. “After both boys moved out and his wife passed away, it became hard for Nick to maintain,” Bec explains. “But the idea of living in half the house was perfect for him.”

So, Nick made the gutsy decision to convert his beloved family home into two townhomes. And who better to enlist for help than his own son and daughter-in-law? George and Bec now ran Nectaar, a Melbourne-based interior design, building and architectural hub. It was decided; father and son Nick and George would undertake the building and project management, while Bec would oversee the interiors, specifications, sourcing and styling. “We had to work closely with the architect and engineer (from locals S. Group and MTO Engineering) to get the layout right, as we kept the original footprint of the home,” Bec recalls. “Once we finalised this, we started to map out the façade, and I began work on the interiors.” An entire year of design and planning passed before the demolition began. “That in itself took five weeks,” says Bec. “George and Nick did it all by themselves, by hand. Then everything started to come together quickly.” Nevertheless, the strain of the project on daily life

was inevitable. “Juggling two kids under three and a business, plus the reno, nearly broke me,” Bec admits. “There were lots of late nights, working on weekends and planning with George. But we knew the harder we worked to get it finished, the quicker we would be back to our normal routine.” Within 10 months, the transformation into two chic townhomes – each with three bedrooms and two bathrooms – was complete. At first glance, the modern exterior suggests a complete overhaul, but a closer look reveals that the soul of the former home is still intact. “We kept a lot of the original brickwork,” George points out, adding that his father’s old bricks were painted and even recycled and re-laid throughout. >

HOUSE 2 K I T C H E N The original brickwork in the home was painted in Dulux ‘White on White’ – a great cost-effective way to create an interesting texture on the wall and splashback. “It’s my absolute favourite area of the whole build!” exclaims Bec. “And I knew from the start that I wanted to design a green kitchen. Everyone was calling me a bit crazy but then once it went in I almost cried – I was so excited! I put a lot of work into these kitchens and I’m over the moon with how they turned out.” Stone benchtop from Cosentino; skylights from VELUX; track lights from Beacon Lighting; flooring from National Tiles; stools from OZ Design Furniture; handles from Lo & Co; tap from Brodware; appliances from The Good Guys; joinery by Sabrina Shopfitting painted in Dulux ‘Spiralina’ and Dulux ‘White on White’.

They also retained the dwelling’s unique angular structure – turning the build’s biggest challenge into a striking design feature. “No room is perfectly square,” Bec explains. “It’s created interest in each space.” Bec’s “modern ’70s” brief for each townhome’s interior has added further interest. Recreating its vintage features through contemporary applications of timber, wall panelling, bold colour and terrazzo, Bec has maintained and built upon the essence of the former home. George says his father is “so proud” to call his new townhouse home. And to top it off, the eventual 68

As for the impact of such a personal project on the Douros family: “It was emotional, but we were all so excited to give the home a new lease on life,” George says. “I can still remember what spaces were there before – memories of my mum and growing up there. Bec designed my old bedroom as a kids’ room for one of our sons. It’s so special, standing in there.”

K I T C H E N “This was such a fun space to design, even though it was also one of the trickiest. Nathan from SpaceCraft Joinery suggested that we tile the rangehood block in the same blush-pink splashback tiles – I jumped at the idea. And while I absolutely had moments throughout the build where I questioned if it was going to be too much, now that we’re finished I absolutely love the space,” says Susie. Tiles from National Tiles; copper door handles from Lo & Co.

Susie and Aaron Martin of Aaron Martin Construction love designing and building custom homes for clients. After purchasing a small corner block on a quiet cul-de-sac near tree-lined River Angas (which happens to be their fifth spec home), they knew it was meant for Susie’s mum, Anne, who was living with them at the time. With Anne’s blessing, the couple embarked on a home that they hoped would be as extraordinary as their loved one. They began by approaching Personalised Home Designs, based in Goolwa, with their vision. “We wanted a pavilion-style home with light-filled rectangular volumes linked by walkways,” Susie explains. They pictured a “modern barn” aesthetic, using a mixture of recycled brick and Scyon wall cladding, and sought to make the most of the treetop views by incorporating a loft. The build was no small feat for the 600-square-metre block, Susie recalls – the home’s design typically demanded more space and budget. But the Martins strategised, figuring that they could utilise the smaller footprint to create more “wow” within their allowance. So, with Aaron as builder/project manager and Susie tackling the interiors, the build commenced. The result is a stunning home-sweet-home: a threepavilion abode that embraces modern barn magic. Its

Interior-wise? “We really wanted to have fun,” says Susie, who attributes her expanding design know-how to collaborations with talented designers, stylists and tradespeople on each project. “The aim was to achieve a high-end look without spending huge dollars, and to introduce colour where we could.” The main living area’s 5.5-metre-high raked ceilings with V-groove panelling – not to mention its statement recycled-brick fireplace – make it a luxurious space. Meanwhile, the ambitious loft above the kitchen boasts an elegant timber stairway and glass balustrade overlooking the living area. “While we certainly wanted to create a warm,

homely environment for Mum, we also wanted to showcase what can be done with colour and texture,” says Susie, who opted for chic Scandinavian design elements and character-filled colour. “Sometimes the best results are achieved when you inject some personality.” The Scandi blend of textures and natural materials includes concrete blush basins, solid timber and stone, plus herringbone patterns in the timber flooring, marble tile entrance floor and the feature wall in the main bathroom. The colour palette, meanwhile, encompasses neutrals and a touch of pink, inspired by Anne and three key features Susie knew the home couldn’t go without: ‘Crayon Rosa’ splashback tiles in the kitchen, blush bathroom basins, and rose-gold accessories. Colour also boosts the kitchen – quite literally. Susie remembers the space posing initial challenges owing to its low ceiling beneath the loft. Applying white to the ceiling lifted the space, while Nathan Wundersitz of SpaceCraft Joinery ensured the striking navy cabinetry appeared bottom-heavy to create further depth. Anne’s “forever home” perfectly balances flair and function – what could be better? “Mum loves the number of interesting and light-filled spaces,” says Susie. “There’s no shortage of places to sit, have a cup of tea, watch the sunset...” “Any new house would have made her life better, but she couldn’t have imagined she would one day call a home like this her own.”
