“With so many of us now working from home, a shed for work, storage or hobbies (or anything else you fancy!) can be a great investment.” - LONI PARKER, EDITOR, ADORE HOME

I had never really given much thought to sheds prior to owning a house, but now it’s something I’m a little obsessed with. My partner and I are now the proud owners of two sheds. Mine is the compact Stilla shed pictured above. It’s an organised spot to house all my gardening tools, leftover paint, and bits and pieces. My partner has claimed the studio shed from SheShedz (pictured right) as his own, turning it into a cool photography/videography workspace. And now that it’s all furnished, I don’t see him much anymore! He absolutely adores spending time in his shed – and who could blame him? A space all for himself, away from the house, where he can work in peace and listen to his records. My interest in how people use their own sheds is what sparked the idea for our Show Us Your Shed series on the Adore Home Magazine YouTube channel. There are currently three episodes, but I’d love to add more in future as I stumble across other cool sheds. With so many of us now working from home, a shed for work, storage or hobbies (or anything else you fancy!) can be a great investment to free up valuable space in your home. For us, it has essentially turned our three-bedroom house into four bedrooms – and for a whole lot less money than an extension. Speaking of spending loads of time at home, hands up who feels like they’ve been robbed of a vacation or two in 2020? The home tours in our latest issue offer amazing inspiration for how to create holiday vibes at home. With international flights likely to be a little while off yet, now’s the time to turn your space into the sanctuary you’ve always longed for. I know I’m hankering for a plunge pool after eyeing off the beautiful pools in each of these knockout homes. For now, I’ll have to make do with the plastic clam-shaped version and a hose. But let’s hope by next year that situation changes! Enjoy your summer…

As she debuts her latest collection – a small series of portraits for the Makers/Creators online art space of Mitch Revs Gallery in Newcastle – Brittany Ferns says she likes to leave her artwork somewhat open to interpretation. “The scenes I create are manifested from my imagination or memories of the places I’ve travelled,” she says. Having previously worked as a textile and graphic designer, Brittany says she is still inspired by vintage textiles and arranging patterns and colours. “Actually, my portraits usually have some sort of printed

She adds that she’s also inspired by the aesthetic of old decaying walls, and tries to bring this across in her work by layering plaster and paint and sanding the surface back to reveal the layers beneath them. Brittany explains that this also functions as “a metaphor for the layers of oneself” containing remnants of the past. Inspiration is also found through the process of mood boarding. “I think this has helped me refine my style and direction, and it’s always a bonus knowing how to use the Adobe Creative Cloud suite when you are working on bits of everything,” she says. Brittany’s work can be purchased from her website.

Our laundries are often one of the smallest rooms in the house. Here are five smart ideas to maximise the space.

1

S TA C K E D H I G H If a dryer is essential for your laundry and space is tight, consider stacking it on top of your washing machine. “The stacking washer and dryer were chosen here to allow for maximum cupboard space below the benchtop,” says interior designer Leah Rispoli of Hemma Interiors. “The washer and dryer selected were designed to be stacked in this way. Remember: not all washers and dryers are stackable, so be sure to check with the manufacturer.”

BARN DOOR PHOTOGRAPHY VILLA STYLING / INTERIOR DESIGN & BUILD FRONT PORCH PROPERTIES

Where there’s not much room, opting for a barn door rather than a standard door can prove invaluable. Take, for example, this compact laundry designed and built by Front Porch Properties utilising a timber barn door from BillyGoat Barn Doors. “I like using barn doors for laundries and bathrooms because, much like a sliding cavity door, they save you space and don’t take up square meterage of your room,” says Rachael Turner, director of Front Porch Properties. “If you’re renovating, adding a sliding barn door is much easier than installing a sliding cavity door. A sliding cavity door would require ripping out a section of your wall to install the door cavity, whereas the barn door track simply gets mounted to your existing wall. Barn doors tick all the boxes, in my opinion!”

STYLE TIP!

PHOTOGRAPHY DYLAN JAMES / INTERIOR DESIGN & BUILD M.J. HARRIS GROUP

In a European laundry, be sure to keep the materials and colour palette the same as the kitchen to create a sense of cohesion.

3

EURO STYLE

A European laundry is one that’s tucked away inside a cupboard – typically hidden behind either bifold doors or pocket doors that disappear into the wall cavity – in the kitchen or even in a hallway.

PHOTOGRAPHY ANJIE BLAIR / INTERIOR DESIGN LYDIA MASKIELL

This compact example measuring just 1.5m x 0.8m was designed and built by M.J. Harris Group and neatly integrated into the client’s kitchen. “We were able fit out this laundry with a lot of features you would find in a full-sized laundry – just on a smaller scale. We included both undermount sink and above-head storage within this space. By stacking the washer and dryer to one side, we were able to fill the rest of the space with storage,” says M.J. Harris Group director Mike Harris.

4

SKY-HIGH CABINETRY

Interior designer Lydia Maskiell has maximised the space in this laundry by going all the way up with the cabinetry. “We were working with quite a small space; therefore, it was essential for us to make this as functional and practical as possible,” says Lydia. “In general, I always take the overhead cabinetry to the ceiling to make full use of the space and to avoid dust collecting on top. The overhead cabinets in here are an equal mix of enclosed as well as open storage for items that you want easily accessible, such as towels. We’ve maximised storage where possible, making use of the under-sink area as well as overhead cabinets,” says Lydia. adore home

5

CONCEALED If a bigger bathroom is a priority, why not steal some space from the laundry? Measuring a modest 1.15m wide x 0.75m deep, this compact laundry by M.J. Harris Group features all the essentials: a small sink and space for a washing machine, along with plenty of open shelves. “Typical of an urban home in Melbourne, we lacked space. So, in order to create a generous family bathroom, we needed to get creative with the laundry,” says director Mike Harris. “It’s still aesthetically pleasing but leaves more room in the bathroom.” “To ensure the laundry kept in synch with the bathroom, we had custom recessed timber handles made from the same timber as the vanity. This connects the two spaces perfectly. We didn’t want the laundry to look like it was just placed there because we didn’t have space. By running the same wall tiles on the back wall, we tied the laundry into the bathroom harmoniously.”

When they moved into their farmhouse six years ago, Lee Talbot of mavenHOME and her family avoided renovating their kitchen, as they planned to put a new one in down the track. But, when their renovation plans and budget changed, it looked unlikely that the new kitchen was coming any time soon. “I simply couldn’t stand looking at this 17-year-old IKEA kitchen any longer,” says Lee. The old kitchen wasn’t hideous, she says – just dated and bland. Instead of a complete overhaul, they opted to make their money work hard for them. She says she brought it into the year 2020 (with just $720!) by introducing details and tones she featured throughout the rest of the house. Lee updated the handles on the kitchen cabinetry, as well as the lighting. She painted the existing

splashback tiles, added new stools that she also painted, and incorporated a shelf and some styling elements. The drawer fronts on the kitchen island were reconfigured and Easycraft VJ panels were added. “A refresh as opposed to a full renovation can be far more effective than you think,” says Lee. “Be smart about what you invest in and do as much work yourselves as possible.” And if you can’t afford to change all the things you don’t love? “Draw your eye away from them by adding interest elsewhere through styling vignettes, nice handles, feature tapware and contemporary lighting.”

BUDGET KITCHENS

Melissa Lever renovated her kitchen in holiday accommodation, ‘Anchor’ in New South Wales’ beautiful Avoca Beach, for just over $10,000. The existing kitchen was small, dark and dated, with boxy cabinetry and grey-speckled laminate bench tops. Knocking out a partition wall and swapping the window for a door, which now offers direct access to the backyard and barbecue, immediately opened and brightened the space.

BEFORE

Ideas for the kitchen came mostly from Instagram and Pinterest. Melissa loved the style of open shelving compared to cabinetry to achieve a coastal holiday vibe. “Given it’s a holiday home, storage wasn’t as important compared to if it was a permanent home,” she explains. “Plus, it’s great for guests as they can quickly find things without having to open every drawer.” Cabinetry, benchtops and appliances are all from IKEA, which Melissa says was a huge cost saver, especially considering they installed everything themselves. “We used a tiler who did the bathrooms at the same time and therefore gave us a good price,” says Melissa. “And rather than replacing the dark floors we painted them white, which instantly brightened the space. We are really happy with how it looks; the texture and detail of the floor can still be seen, giving it some added character rather than a new show-home look.”

Hamptons FRESH

Mellissa Kenny and her husband Mark transformed this kitchen from dated and disintegrating to fresh and functional. WORDS NICHOLA DAVIES / PHOTOGRAPHY MELLISSA KENNY

R E home B E30F Oadore

TOTAL COST Including cabinetry, benchtop and appliances $14,500

It’s hard to believe that this bright and breezy Hamptonsstyle kitchen was once home to cracked floors, purple cabinetry and a laminate benchtop that would lift off the base cabinetry. But interior designer Mellissa Kenny of My Kind of Bliss, alongside her husband Mark, did it all for under $15,000, without having ever renovated before – and with a baby on the way! The couple kicked off the project by ripping out the old kitchen and extending it along the entire far wall, which maximised storage space and functionality. Mellissa says they managed to keep costs down by doing everything except plumbing and electrical work themselves, and by making some clever product swaps. “I would have loved a stone bench top but budget wouldn’t allow it, so we went with a laminate,” says Mellissa. “I was worried at first using a laminate but the range available now is incredible. I found a beautiful laminate from Polytec called Carrara Matt.”

*

“Spend money in the right places – we invested money in good quality appliances and hybrid floors.”

For cabinetry, the couple chose Kaboodle based on the cost and the DIY factor. “Choosing the raw doors saved us so much money and meant that we could fully customise them,” says Mellissa. “I also loved the classic Shaker-style profiles.” “I’m a pro with the spray gun now,” she jokes.

O U T D O O R L I V I N G The family lived in the home for a year before work commenced on the outdoor space. “We didn’t do this space straight away, choosing to move in without it complete to give ourselves that extra time to live in the space before making any decisions. It definitely worked out in the end.” Dining table and chairs from Domayne and grey pots from The Balcony Garden.

It’s fair to say that in 2020 our homes have become sanctuaries more than ever before. This is certainly true for the Richardson family (Ben, Sally, their kids Mac, 12, and Poppy, 10, and their toy cavoodle Archie), who recently finished building their dream home a short walk from the beach in Cronulla, NSW.

kitchen to be the heart of the home. A few mood boards later, the build kicked off; it took nine months to complete, with everyone rolling up their sleeves and pitching in. The family lived with Sally’s mum during the build, and Sally’s sister-in-law Ky Drury from by_kydrury in Byron Bay helped create the kitchen of their dreams.

Ben runs building company BR Building, and says the homes they build are often large, detailed, high-end homes with a lot of brick and concrete work. When it came to building their own home, Ben says they chose a weatherboard style because it’s timeless and suited the location perfectly. “Plus, it’s not often I get the opportunity to do a home where my team and I get to showcase all of our carpentry skills,” says Ben.

Sally loves to cook so enjoys spending time in the kitchen, where 3-metre-long island bench anchors the home. The floorplan was cleverly designed so that from the kitchen, the family could still be part of whatever was happening in other areas. “That includes some of the outdoor spaces too, like the pool, where we can see the kids swimming from our kitchen island,” says Sally.

After securing the block, the Richardsons worked with architect Cameron Jones of Innovate Architecture. “We had crushed over Cameron’s work and design for many years and it was an easy decision for us,” says Ben. They knew they wanted the roof to be a main feature and the 36

THE RIGHT WHITE After narrowing down the exterior white colour to two or three choices, Sally and Ben decided to engage the services of Catherine Heraghty from The Stables. “She was amazing and was able to help us with some of those finishing decisions so we could move forward.” Exterior painted in Dulux ‘White Polar’ half strength.

The Richardsons achieved their goal with the ceiling as well. “It’s certainly one of the first things people notice and comment on when they walk into our home.” The impact of the pitched roof is increased by the fact that in the lounge room the ceilings are an impressive 5 metres high, and 4.5 metres high in the kitchen. “All that beautiful northern sun streams through the big windows at the back and makes that space feel so light and airy.” Despite its impressive, grander features, Ben and Sally say some of their favourite parts of the home are the things they left until the end and revised along the way. That includes the buffet, with its rattan inserts, the mudroom space by the front door that’s well utilised by the kids, and the breeze blocks outside, which Ben admits were a hard sell from Sally. Finishing touches were added from local homewares store Girl Meraki, and Ben and Sally say they couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out. “It’s just the feeling we get when we are inside our home,” says Sally. “Although it’s a mostly white palette and layers upon layers of textures, it feels really warm and homey. We love it.”

T I M B E R D E TA I L The end panel for the kitchen island bench is made up of half round 40mm timber dowels in a Whitewashed American Oak finish.

Kelle Howard had the vision for her dream home, Bajo el Sol (‘Under the Sun’ in Spanish), for more than a year before she purchased the block where she built it. She had originally planned to renovate an existing home but, when she couldn’t find one that fit her vision, she chose one to demolish so she could start from scratch instead. “I describe my aesthetic as an interior designer as ‘raw, coastal, luxe’, so designing a home completely from my own imagination was wildly appealing; it meant I could showcase my style,” says Kelle.

“I wanted the architecture to be a mix of these materials to allow the home to speak for itself,” says Kelle. “I wanted to focus on hero pieces – such as the built-in daybeds, the floating bed frame and the artwork – to complement the textures rather than compete with them. So, I kept the palette relatively neutral with pops of peach and tan throughout.” When asked to name her favourite aspects of her dream home, Kelle says that, while it was important to make each room memorable, she loves the home for

Growing up, I always had a natural love for both designs.” With this in mind, Lauren set out to create a home that incorporated both coastal and farmhouse styles.

F R O N T F A C A D E “When gathering inspiration, I was drawn to biophilic design; I always wanted plants to be a feature of the facade,” says Kelle. “The peach front gate is another showstopper – painted in ‘Retro Peach’ by British Paints.” Kelle hired a dream team including builder PJH Constructions, BCG Building Design and JSW Landscapes & Design to bring her vision to life. “I selected a team that felt like family so that I could rely on them to ensure the build stayed on track,” says Kelle.

Spanning the entire length of the house, the master suite is flooded with natural light from both sides. “I wanted my bedroom to be super minimal with no furniture, so I designed built-in rendered bedside tables and the floating bed frame,” says Kelle. “There’s no artwork in there, just a huge freestanding mirror that I had custom made, which reflects the light from the balcony and makes the room seem bigger than it is.” In a space like this, it’s no surprise Kelle says she wakes up every day feeling grateful for the life she has created. The solo mama of two says she believes mindset is everything. “I’m now focusing on new builds and full-scale renos – all in my signature raw coastal luxe style!” says Kelle.

“To avoid feeling overwhelmed by online inspiration, always start with a vision – whether it be a Pinterest board or your own mood board – and stick to it.”

Lauren Cecil says that no matter how many times she walks through her front door, she doubts she’ll “ever get over” her cathedral ceilings. The entrance to her Gold Coast home – beneath a soaring 5.7m raked roofline, with high windows that frame the drifting clouds beyond – is breathtaking. All white, with light timber floors, the space is refined and sparse, with a rustic twist thanks to two sculptural pendants constructed of paper rope and slender poplar branches. The entryway looks through to the living, dining and kitchen area, which flows out to an alfresco space, pool and garden. This zone is at the heart of the home; off to each side is a parents’ wing for Lauren and her husband Tai, and a children’s wing (for their five kids under 12!). It’s a long house, designed over one level to best utilise their block of land. “It was really important to design a home that was going to give us all our own space but also to have the hub of the home in the middle of the layout, bringing us all together,” Lauren explains. “I was always a fan of two-storey homes – it’s what we had with our previous homes – but I just don’t think it would have had the same feel as it does now.” 56

Lauren and Tai, who works in construction, had renovated before but this was their first time as owner builders. Lauren worked with a draftsman on the layout and took charge of the interior design and styling, and Tai led the remarkably swift five-month build. The “coastal barn” style is an amalgamation of Lauren’s childhood memories of rural homes and vacations at the beach. “I love a resort-style vibe, but also the feeling that a cottage in the country can give,” she explains. “Both styles give that feeling of holiday – of switching off and relaxing.” The home’s bright interior is softened by gentle colour accents, timber and pockets of greenery. “I think it’s important not to freak out when thinking about using all white throughout your home. It doesn’t always mean cold and uninviting; white can be the perfect canvas.” But how to keep things pristine when there are young children involved? Family-friendly finishes are key, Lauren says. “People say I’m crazy for purchasing a white lounge, but I chose to spend a little extra and have it treated with a fabric protector. This has made spot cleaning so much easier – and, let me tell you, there is >

It’s where we spend most of our time as a family,” says Lauren. “The cathedralstyle ceilings really help open up this area and give it a grand feeling. She also adores her bathroom finishes, especially her oversized arched mirror: “It is a beautiful statement in a very simple bathroom.” But above all, it’s the humble laundry that’s won her heart. In her previous homes, the laundries were dark and cold; this time she made sure she positioned it to soak up the sunshine. “I love the warmth and feel of the space and the beautiful light it receives all day long. “I love the indoor/outdoor integration, the little hidden nooks to escape from the craziness of life, and that you can relax in the outdoor bath without a care in the world.” – YVONNE PRETTI

By demolishing the existing ’70s-style brick façade on their newly purchased property, Yvonne Pretti and her husband Warrick had a clean slate on which to build their vision of the perfect Burleigh Heads accommodation. Their design brief for Elder Villa 1 was for a modern, coastal look that had an element of five-star luxury – something that would be perfect for a girls’ weekend or a romantic getaway. “Think soft bathrobes, slippers and luxury hotel toiletries, all while still feeling warm and inviting,” says Yvonne. “A place for memories to be made.” From the initial design through to the finished product, Elder Villa 1 took 18 months to complete – a process Yvonne describes as a lot of fun. “We worked with architect Dani Buchanan, who pretty much nailed our brief from the get-go,” says Yvonne, who has 26 years of experience in the construction industry. “Between myself, Warrick and Dani, we fine-tuned certain features and couldn’t be more thrilled with the result.”

One factor that was really important to the couple was ensuring the villa felt open and inviting, with great street appeal, while still giving guests a sense of privacy. Fortunately, Yvonne and Warrick own the property next door, which they have transformed into Elder Villa 2, and this allowed them to put the two villas’ garages side-byside and maximise floor space in both.

They have succeeded in making the living and dining areas in Elder Villa 1 feel expansive and open, with generous outdoor spaces to make the most of the Burleigh Heads weather. “The moment the styling came together, and we stood back and soaked up the vibe we created – a coastal feel with no concrete or hard finishes – was a rewarding moment,” says Yvonne. “It portrays what Burleigh Heads means to us: a place to relax and soak up the sunshine.” “I love the indoor/outdoor integration, the little hidden nooks to escape from the craziness of life, and that you can relax in the outdoor bath without a care in the world,” says Yvonne. “Our goal is to make every guest feel special. Whether you’re on a holiday or a weekend escape, we want to create a wow factor that guests will remember forever.” As well as boasting beautiful beaches, Burleigh is a culinary hotspot perfect for summery nights spent dining alfresco in the sea breeze. “Layer that with some great shopping in nearby James Street and you have my idea of a perfect holiday,” says Yvonne.

“The feature I love most about SheShedz is that the ceilings are quite high and have exposed beams.” Mark Zeidler runs his graphic design, photography and videography business from his backyard. “My shed is my go-to creative space, where I work and come up with ideas,” says Mark. “It’s also a space to just chill and play music.” Mark’s partner is Adore editor Loni Parker, and she works from the office inside their house. Having his own dedicated studio had been a dream of Mark’s for some time, and when he came across SheShedz 3x3m shed, he knew he’d found what he was after. “I had a vision in mind before I started. I wanted it to be painted all black and for it to look like a Scandinavian barn,” he explains. “The feature I love most about SheShedz is that the ceilings are quite high and have exposed beams. It was the exact look I was searching for.” The shed arrived as a kit and Mark and his carpenter built it over two days. He painted the entire thing black, including the floor, then set about customising the interior. “It’s about the size of a standard bedroom, so I had

to be smart designing the layout,” Mark says. “I chose pieces, such as my tall bookshelf, that had a narrow width but used the height of the cabin to make up for lost space.”

- MARK ZEIDLER

Cabinets, shelving and accessories were sourced predominantly from IKEA and then adapted to suit the studio’s style. He gave the ‘Ivar’ cabinets a suave makeover by painting them black and adding tan leather handles, and converted a ‘Besta’ TV unit into a window seat by topping it with a custom bench cushion by Zenn Design. The dark tones of the interior are balanced by light timber elements, a natural-coloured cotton rug and linen curtains. “Choosing the right artwork and adding greenery was also important,” Mark says. A pegboard and picture ledges are home to evolving displays of artwork, objects and record covers. Mark loves his studio’s moody palette. “My own branding is black and white, and I always wear black T-shirts, so it goes hand in hand,” he laughs. “I also wanted to introduce a cocktail lounge vibe to the barn, so it had to be painted black!”

Tasha Kimlin’s 2x3m shed is “a space for lazy days spent in the garden”. She and her husband Byron designed and built it for raising seedlings, seed saving and flower drying, and for storing the equipment they need for their extensive flower and vegetable gardens. But, she says, the shed has become more than a work zone. “It is my refuge from the demands of the world… where I can nurture myself, not just the gardens.” The shed’s restorative qualities echo the story of its construction. “Sustainability and thoughtful use of materials were a huge consideration when planning and designing the area,” Tasha explains. “It was important to us to incorporate as many reclaimed, free and recycled materials as possible while still creating a beautiful space with quality finishes.” The couple’s property has been in Byron’s family for 99 years. Tasha, Byron and their children have lovingly created the self-sufficient garden space (which also includes the chicken coop in this feature) complete with off-grid solar and custom-made steel water tanks. Many of the shed’s features were bought secondhand, intercepted on their way to the tip, repurposed or found in demolition yards – including its timbers, windows, doors, European pavers, vintage cement tub, and curated pieces including vintage sieves, galvanised bins, trays, tools and

Tasha Kimlin researched extensively when designing a coop for her “feathered ladies” – nine hens, two ducks and two ducklings – which was then built by her husband Byron. “It is spacious, predator proof and easy to keep clean, and has great airflow for the hot Queensland summers,” says Tasha. They opted for a deep-litter method on the floor – a thick layer of bedding that essentially creates a clean and safe compost heap for the garden and a better environment for the birds. “There’s a shaded porch area and the ducks have their own luxurious pink bath for daily swims,” says Tasha. The bath is plumbed so it can be filled from the backyard tanks and the nutrient-rich dirty water is pumped back into the home’s garden beds. A barn door reclaimed from a demolition yard and painted in fairy-floss pink (with a matching vintage children’s laundry trolley for nesting) adds a delightful pop of colour. Thinking of keeping poultry? Check your council’s guidelines first, says Tasha, and be prepared to invest the time and money necessary. You’ll be rewarded with organic eggs, excellent fertiliser and natural bug control. “They make great pets, take care of the kitchen scraps, give the children responsibilities and are great for your mental health,” says Tasha. “Life is better with chickens!”

When Adore’s editor Loni Parker replaced the old tin shed in her back garden, she opted for a compact timber number by Stilla. The shed comes in an easyto-assemble kit with pre-made cedar panels. “I’ve always loved the look of a timber shed,” she says. “They have a sturdiness and timelessness to them that really appealed to me.” The shed she chose was smaller, but Loni was undeterred. “The old tin shed wasn’t organised – everything was strewn all over the floor. I knew I could fit all my gardening and power tools, tins of paint, lawnmower and other bits and bobs into a smaller shed if I used the space cleverly.”

DUCK-EGG DOORS A sample pot of Taubmans ‘Blue Shamrock’ paint was used to affordably add colour to the insides of the doors and the timber crates. “I like the idea of changing these up in the future for minimal dollars when I get sick of the duck-egg blue,” she explains.

Stilla’s Birch 6x3 shed is narrow, at only 0.9m deep, so Loni maximised use of its vertical space. A tall openshelving system from IKEA houses paint tins, power tools and timber crates for stashing other smaller items. “Luckily our lawnmower is a light cordless one, and the handles fold down, so it fits neatly on the floor alongside the shelves,” Loni explains. Inexpensive pegboard from Bunnings on the back wall of the shed, and hooks added to the side walls, provide versatile hanging space for gardening essentials. Moving everything off the floor and raising it to eye level has meant it’s now quick and simple to find things, Loni points out. The shed’s raw timber construction made it easy to personalise. Loni enlisted a carpenter to add some timber battens to the insides of the doors, lending them a barn-door look, and to affix the pegboard at the back. She then painted the exterior and interior in Dulux Colorbond ‘Night Sky’, so that when the doors are closed the shed blends in against the yard’s back fence.

“I’ve always loved the look of a timber shed. They have a sturdiness and timelessness to them.”
