“We decided to plant our garden early on during the renovation. It’s paid off because now we have plants and trees absolutely flourishing; some are already taller than the fence, creating a lush privacy screen.”

PHOTOGRAPHY MARK ZEIDLER

- LONI PARKER, EDITOR

A home’s outdoor area is easily the most rewarding space to transform. When my partner and I moved into our house, there were only two trees outside, and nothing but weedy grass and a dirty old tin shed out the back. It was essentially a blank canvas – our imaginations ran wild! We turned to Pinterest for inspiration, creating a native/coastal-inspired garden out the back that we are super proud of. We did a lot of the work ourselves, apart from hiring an excavator to dig up the garden beds and add the new soil. Obviously, we could have done this with a shovel but it’s back-breaking work – and if there’s anything we’ve learnt about renos, it’s to work smarter not harder. Hiring an expert with the right machinery was well worth the money. And besides, we saved in other ways by putting in the

garden edging and planting it all ourselves. We decided to plant our garden early on during the renovation. It’s paid off because now we have plants and trees absolutely flourishing; some are already taller than the fence, creating a lush privacy screen. A lot of renovators tend to leave their gardens until last, which is a real pity because often they sell the property soon afterwards and miss out on seeing the garden grow. And that’s by far the best bit! If you’re looking to beautify your yard, take note of our amazing outdoor makeovers featured in this issue. There are so many ideas there, and I’m taking inspiration from one of them, with plans to crazy pave and build a bench seat in our front yard. Watch this space!

WORDS KATE MOSS

Whether you’re renovating your bathroom or starting fresh with a new build, you’ve no doubt spent hours online searching for inspiration; there’s a lot to take in! Bathrooms are intimidating and expensive spaces to make over, and it’s important to get your head around the design terminology so that you can decide what will work in your space and avoid throwing money down the drain.

VJ PA N E L L I N G Not a new guest to the party, VJ panels have been gracing period homes for decades. But they’ve recently made a comeback thanks to a modern method of construction for wet area application. Also known as tongue-and-groove or V-groove, these panels are sold as pre-primed MDF boards that can be cut to size. A much cheaper alternative to tiles, they are the perfect way to introduce texture and detail in bathrooms that are otherwise dominated by cold, hard surfaces.

A layered lighting plan is crucial in any space but especially in bathrooms, where the intention is to create the illusion of daylight. Feature lights are an inexpensive way to enhance the overall look of your space. The location of these is another thing that needs to be decided during rough-in, so be sure to communicate your decisions early on with your electrician and trades. When placed either side of the mirror, lights help to eliminate shadows. As a rule of thumb, aim for the brightest part of the light to sit at eye level.

MITRED EDGES If you’ve done your research and spent your weekends browsing bathroom showrooms, you’ll have come to realise that tiles take up a fair chunk of your renovation budget – not just in material cost but also in the install process. After narrowing down your options and deciding on a layout pattern, the next detail to communicate to your tiler early in the process is how you want the edges finished off. The easiest (and least expensive) way to do this is by adding a tile trim around the corner edges. When used in excess, these aluminium strips run the risk of cheapening your overall look.

‘Potts Point’ carrara-look matt tile $63m2 tilecloud.com.au

CO LO U R Going bold with a feature tile or introducing pops of colour through a basin or wall paint can add character to your space. Being adventurous is great, but you should research thoroughly and choose carefully so that your design will stand the test of time in terms of both functionality and looks. Choosing the right feature tile along with complementing fixtures and finishes will make or break your space, so be sure to have a clear vision before you press ‘add to cart’.

TOP LEFT IMAGE: ARCHITECTURE KONTISTA + CO / STYLING THE HIRED HOME / PHOTOGRAPHY THE PALM CO

The alternative is to get your tiler to mitre your edges to create a clean, continuous aesthetic. (Expect a few groans; it is time-consuming, tedious work but well worth the expense.) This involves cutting two tiles at a 45-degree angle and butting them together to create a finishing detail that will streamline your bathroom’s look.

It’s au revoir to the days of the shower caddy and bonjour to the niche or ledge. Niches are great for small spaces and create a seamless look. To avoid a look that may date, consider continuing the wall tile inside the niche rather than adding a feature. If you have room for it, a ledge running from wall to wall is the perfect way to create a streamlined effect. This is also a great place to include the mitred edge we discussed earlier. For smaller tiles like kit kats (as pictured this page) an aluminium strip will be a more appropriate choice. Finish with a small vase and wooden brush, and voila!

“Usually I just have a starting point and I let my hand go where it wants to.” As a youngster, Rikki Day could often be found at the beach watching her mum surf. “She was a professional longboarder. I often feel that all those hours of sitting on the shore, drawing lines in the sand with sticks, has contributed to my style of art.” “I think every artist’s journey begins in childhood,” Rikki muses. Her early life, she says, was full of creative energy. “My mother’s girlfriend was an artist, and the entryway in our home was set up as a painting nook for her. It was pretty magical coming home from school every day and walking straight into such a creative space.” But it wasn’t until she was a mother herself that Rikki turned to art as an outlet and subsequently made a career out of it. She describes leaving her 10-month-old son at home and taking her first solo walk since his birth. “I sat on the beach and asked myself, ‘What do you want that’s just for you?’ My answer was ‘To paint’.” Energised by the realisation, she immediately went

With an online following of thousands, she currently sells original paintings, limited-edition prints and ceramics from her website, as well as working on commissions. The fluidity of her paintings echoes her meditative and intuitive creative process. Recalling her childhood drawings in the sand, Rikki says, “usually I just have a starting point and I let my hand go where it wants to”.

TREE

STRIPES

The founders of interiors brand Tree Stripes love creating functional, beautiful wares from materials that have already served their purpose. WORDS NICHOLA DAVIES

Having grown up in Fiji, where community, culture and nature played a vital role in everyday life, Pretisha Patel and Kapil Jekishan wanted to create something that empowered communities through love of art and the environment. Tree Stripes began with an ambitious idea while they were in Tanzania staying at Tarangire Treetops, a game reserve bordering Tarangire National Park where guesthouses are built into the branches of ancient trees. “The first morning we went out from our tree house we saw hundreds of zebras grazing right in front of us,” recalls Kapil. “That emotion is still so vivid – hence the name Tree Stripes.” The name of their brand takes the duo back to that moment and serves as a reminder that more needs to be done to help our planet if we want future generations to be able to enjoy it. This philosophy is at the core of Tree Stripes, which works with a 28

production partner who employs 180 women in Sri Lanka – mainly young mothers –and pays them well above minimum wage, plus bonuses, childcare provisions and social security. Tree Stripes designs are influenced by the traditional crafts of different cultures, with their motifs, colours and textures often referencing traditional ways of life. “We also look to nature for inspiration on texture and patterns,” says Pretisha. Their collections are made mainly from recycled paper, as well as wood and textiles, all of which are waste products purchased from factories. Products are finished with a natural latex for waterproofing, so they’re entirely earth friendly. That’s decor we can feel good about.

TILE CRAZY PAVE Inspired by Sophie Bell (Instagram’s @peppahart), the couple smashed up outdoor tiles from Tile Cloud and designed a crazy-pave floor. They used Davco Ultraflex adhesive to glue the tiles down, then grouted with Ardex WJ50 wide joint grout in off-white. “It only took us 10 hours to do the whole space, split over two days to allow the glue and grout to dry.” For more DIY-tutorials on how Roisin and Zac transformed this space, check out their Instagram page highlights.

@geebungalow

As they renovated their Brisbane home (dubbed @geebungalow on Instagram) Roisin and Zac initially overlooked their backyard – an awkward space accessed via a rickety ramp from the laundry door. “It had patchy dead grass, an old clothesline and a rotting back deck that was honestly a safety hazard!” Rosin recalls. “But the longer we lived there, the more we realised that the backyard actually got some beautiful light throughout the year, which made us want to make use of the space.” Roisin and Zac are self-taught DIY enthusiasts, relying on YouTube (particularly Bunnings tutorials), Pinterest and blogs for guidance. They both work full time and renovate in between; the backyard makeover took up all their weekends for around four months. The objective was to create a private space for yearround entertaining. Both Zac and Roisin have big families, and it was difficult to seat everyone inside the house. “We wanted to be able to host up to 16 people,” Roisin explains. They levelled the area by pouring a concrete slab – “by far the most expensive part of the backyard and something we under-budgeted for!” – and built a bench seat and raised garden beds out of rendered cinder blocks. “To ensure the render didn’t crack and

BEFORE

bubble, we waterproofed the garden beds, added gravel to the bottom for drainage and a drainage pipe to get rid of any excess water,” Roisin says. A Mediterranean planting scheme and terrazzo crazy paving completed the look, giving the courtyard a breezy European vibe. “We have our coffee out there most mornings and eat dinner there all the time! An outdoor gas heater has made it such a nice space to entertain in the evenings.”

Mich and Gary Woods extended the existing deck of their home by building a whitewashed courtyard with low-slung seating around a coffee table as well as a dining space. The area was once an overgrown tangle of bottlebrush trees, rose bushes and shrubs. “Whenever there was a windstorm an old bottlebrush would fall down. They were so twiggy and sharp and took up half the grass area,” Mich recalls. So, they set out to simplify the space and make it into a usable entertaining zone. Living with the backyard in its original state for a while allowed the couple to observe how the sun warmed the garden at different times of day, informing the way they positioned the decks. “We love the morning sun in summer for breakfast outside and the late afternoon sun that hits the long table in the back corner is perfect,” says Mich. Palms in moveable rustic pots on castors set the mood in the space, where worn-in textures and lush greenery are offset by crisp white paint. “We

wanted a simple, fresh tropical holiday vibe,” says Mich. They created the courtyard wall by installing blueboard, rendering it and painting it white. Gary used reclaimed pier wood - a lucky find from a local tip shop - to build a frame and hang showstopping old Indian doors. Mich explains that they’d treasured the doors (bought from Ha’veli in Byron Bay and Melbourne’s Manon bis) for years before having anywhere to put them. Thrown open, the doors reveal a narrow strip of lawn. Closed, they offer protection from the elements and give the courtyard a magical, cloistered feel.

“I cannot express enough how painting something white can transform a space. I honestly feel like we’ve created this beautiful oasis.”

Hidden away

This custom-made frame houses the gas bottles and blends into the home’s aesthetic.

– BIJOUR MCDONALD

We’re all familiar with the pokey side-area of a house; it can be a struggle to know what to do with it. For Bijour McDonald, the side of her house was “an eyesore” and was used only as a thoroughfare, but it was very visible from the front and back yards. Over a period of three months, she transformed the walkway into a relaxing, usable space with a Mediterranean feel. Aside from the initial step of professionally rendering and painting the house, Bijour says the project was a fairly easy DIY job. After the rendering was finished, she devised a creative solution to the problem of the “ugly gas bottles”. “I had my dad whip up a frame and attach some greenboard for the render to adhere to. I also

had him make me a little arched door so I could access the gas bottles,” says Bijour. “The challenge of trying to hide them has, in turn, given the little area so much character.” She then integrated some leftover limestone pool tiles, foxtail palms, cacti from Bunnings, sandstone rocks from a local landscape supplier and fine white gravel over weed mat, and the space well and truly came together. Bijour says that painting the fence was crucial to revitalising the area. “The boundary fencing was a cream Colorbond fence, which we sprayed white, and that made a real difference,” says Bijour. “I cannot express enough how painting something > white can transform a space.” adore home

BEFORE

Having seen how the undulated render reinvigorated the side of the house, Bijour wanted to extend this vibe to the front of the house. After rendering the front of the house, explains Bijour, “we added a rendered boundary fence, extended the ground level of the existing pavers out to the boundary fencing and had a pergola built into our roofline to provide some cover”. “We had really old-school pavers out front, which didn’t work colour-wise,” she adds. “I found some inspiration from an old European villa courtyard that had light-coloured pavers and they aged so beautifully, so I decided to whitewash them. I just brushed some paver paint on with a paintbrush. The idea is for it to have a worn look.” In terms of landscaping, the established Bismarck palms were already in the front yard, which Bijour says was a very lucky score. “We just dropped a cubic metre of white sand around them to add to that resort vibe. They look absolutely stunning now and just pop amongst all that white,” she says. “I honestly feel like we’ve created this beautiful oasis.”

Over the past decade, Mich Woods and her husband Gary have slowly renovated and tinkered with the styling of the home that they share with their daughter Macey and their three cats in Mornington, Victoria. “We started renovating in 2011 within 10 minutes of being here,” Mich quips. “The old blue bedroom carpet, old roller blinds and ornate beaded light fittings were thrown over the balcony.” “Renovating is a passion for us. We love to constantly renovate rooms and upcycle unused pieces to create something beautiful,” says Mich, who is immersed in the world of vintage homewares and furniture. She has a stall at The Vintage Shed in nearby Tyabb, and also sells homewares and Italian linen via her online store, mich and mace. Yet, despite her passion for interiors, the initial months of renovations proved daunting. “When we moved in, we thought we could do so much so quickly but when

“The house was like a Rubik’s Cube. It was painted in Tuscan sand paint – each wall a different colour: orange, blue, peach, cream and yellow,” she explains. “So, we started covering the walls with boards. We would buy as we could afford, so the walls were orange, blue and yellow for a while!” She recalls a day where Gaz surprised her by covering the garish colours with a coat of cheap white paint. “It was such a treat and so much easier to live with until we could afford to finish.” Painting the floorboards white was also a challenge. Having sanded the spotted gum floors upstairs before painting them, they discovered that the tannins in the timber instantly yellowed the paint. They eventually found a product to use to address the tannin issue upstairs, and avoided the problem downstairs by only lightly sanding before priming and painting. “White is my one true love,” says Mich. “I love wooden things painted white, mixed with simple and natural aesthetics like big old palm leaves found in a local park. Lately we have added a Moroccan vibe.” The effort and expense of whitewashing the house paid off, creating the perfect backdrop for an ever-evolving collection of vintage treasures. “I love a pre-owned or vintage item to create a look,” says Mich. >

The home’s coastal location has influenced its furnishings. Having moved here from a Victorian cottage, the couple soon discovered that their furniture didn’t work in the space. “It looked like doll furniture – ornate and petite. This house needed big, simple and natural,” Mich explains. “When we moved in, if I wanted a certain piece badly I would have a garage sale or market to make enough money to purchase it; I would get rid of old homewares and furniture to get what I really wanted.” Mich’s most prized interior piece is their couch from Bisque Traders. “We alter the look of it by separating the chaise and using them as two separate pieces. Teamed with the beautiful wooden mirror from Zuri Home, which we bleached, it is the key to the look we have now.” The home’s transformation extended outside, with the completion of a beautiful courtyard (which you can see in our feature from page 36). Liberated from its ’90s aesthetic, the once-dingy home now feels luminous, inviting and happy. “We feel like we are on holiday,” says Mich.

“We wanted it to have a relaxed holiday feel, so we have lots of white linen, rattan, vintage rugs and natural materials.” – JOHANNA VAN MOURIK

Homeowner Johanna van Mourik of Navian Design and her husband Matthew were living on a busy street in Queensland’s Mooloolaba when they saw this Warana home built by Ben Liddell Constructions on the cover of a real estate magazine. “It was right across from the beach with only 200 metres to the sand,” explains Johanna. “We visited the beach early one morning and the water was crystal clear, and there were cockatoos and galahs flying around. My husband and I thought we’d arrived in paradise.” The couple were lucky enough to nab the duplex at auction two weeks later and then set to work making it their own, with Johanna doing the interior styling herself. “We wanted it to have a relaxed holiday feel, so we have lots of white linen, rattan, vintage rugs and natural materials,” she explains. Right away, they swapped most light fittings in the home to suit their taste, painted the fence behind the outdoor

One of Johanna’s favourite features of the home is the living area overlooking the pool, which was originally designed to be a media room. “The TV got kicked out as soon as we moved in and we replaced it with art and lots of coffee table books,” says Johanna. “I wanted it to be a space to connect, get inspiration, have good conversations and enjoy some afternoon drinks.” “I also love the pool area. We built the daybed outside, so it feels like we’re always on holidays. It’s so nice to just sit there dangling our feet in the water or have a lazy Sunday under an umbrella.” Outdoor concrete benches and breezeblocks in the fence add to the relaxed coastal vibe, and customfitted concrete benchtops by Concrete Design House throughout the interior continue the home’s beautifully consistent design aesthetic.

Natural materials complement the look and were sourced from local and ethical businesses where possible. “For example, the dining table is locally made and the big wall hanging near the kitchen from The Dharma Door is fair trade,” says Johanna.

Johanna laughs that she’s always changing things around in the house, and in the future the couple plans to extend and build out the outdoor concrete benches as timber bench seats with outdoor cushions. But in the meantime, they’re enjoying life in a location that’s hard to beat. “My husband got me a Smeg coffee machine for Christmas and we buy ground beans from our favourite coffee shop,” says Johanna. “So we make delicious coffee and then take Maliki (our dog) for a walk on the beach before work every morning; it’s the best start to the day.” @naviandesign 62

Styled

BY MEL

Stylist Melissa Stoward has created a peaceful and airy bohemian home with nods to the Mediterranean.

INTERIOR DESIGN MELISSA STOWARD / PHOTOGRAPHY MARK ZEIDLER WORDS NICHOLA DAVIES

It’s hard to believe that the home Melissa Stoward shares with her husband and their three boys in Greenbank, Queensland was once very dark and very tired inside. “It had cream paint throughout, burgundy and green feature walls, 1990s faux-terracotta tiles, and plastic vertical blinds,” Melissa recalls. That’s not to mention the kitchen, which was a small, boxed-in room with swollen and damaged faded black chipboard cabinetry. “The kitchen was definitely earmarked for renovation as soon as we viewed the house,” says Melissa.

well, so we could utilise those much-needed zones,” says Melissa. “We also added VJ panels to the entry and dining room walls for warmth and texture.” The unique niche wall that separates the kitchen from the front entry was actually the result of some last-minute creative thinking. Armed with a phone full of archway imagery and Mediterranean inspiration pictures, Melissa thought up the idea while the kitchen was being demolished.

The first major changes they made when they moved in were cosmetic: a fresh coat of paint, new flooring and softer window coverings. She says those changes alone made an enormous difference.

“Rather than just plaster over the existing ’90s-style niches and have a plain wall, I decided that this was a space where I could get creative. So, drawing inspiration from Mediterranean architecture, I scribbled the design of the arches and shelving on a piece of cardboard while sitting on the floor, then showed our builder, who made it happen that day,” explains Melissa.

“Converting the garage into a laundry and second living space was something I wanted to do straight away as

>

Melissa’s eye for styling saw her collect pieces like the Indian dough bowls and antique columnbase candle holder that really make the interior. “I’m still obsessed with the rice-husk pendants in the kitchen and bedrooms that I sourced from an importer,” says Melissa. Furniture-wise, she loves mixing Marketplace finds with new pieces. “The linen slipcovers are probably my favourite furniture item. They’re comfy and versatile, and the fact you can throw the covers in the wash is a big win with a house full of boys!” Melissa says the bathrooms are next on the renovation list, but she’s taking her time to design spaces that the family will love for years to come. “My style is constantly evolving, and our home is a reflection of that,” she says. “It may always be changing in some way; I enjoy the creative outlet.”

M E D I A R O O M The media room was formerly the garage. “We don’t need a garage with this house because we have a large shed. So, we decided to divide the garage into two spaces: one being the laundry and the other a decent-sized media room with a lounge big enough for us all to sink into on family movie nights,” says Mel. The green colour is called ‘Green Olive’ by Dulux. The arch is a custom colour I created (inspired by a T-shirt of Eddie’s) using the Coloursmith app from Taubmans, so it’s a completely unique colour.”

“I love my big fiddle-leaf fig. For me, a beautiful large fiddle will never go out of style!” – JACQUI VIDAL

It’s rare for a gem of great architectural significance, like this 1971 home by Sibbel Builders, to come up for sale. When Jacqui Vidal and her family spotted it on the market a few years ago in its original condition, they were drawn to its authentic appeal. “The slate floors, sloped ceilings and its L-shape, with nearly every room in the house having a garden view, set it apart from other homes we were viewing at the time,” explains Jacqui, who is a co-owner of botanical wares design studio Ivy Muse. “We snapped it up and the rest is history. Since we moved in, we’ve added to our little brood and the house is now home to a family of five, plus two chickens.” Shortly after moving in, Jacqui and her family embarked on a “sympathetic renovation” that would retain all the elements they loved about the house while making it more comfortable for their growing family. Jacqui says they kept all the original cabinetry in the living spaces, and that set the tone for the whole space. Unfortunately, despite their intentions to keep the beautiful original slate flooring, the wear and tear it had encountered over close to 50 years of use meant that it had to go in the end. When it came to the bathroom, they discovered that Australian-made furniture brand Zuster, which had recently collaborated with Reece, is connected to their

home’s history. The founders of Zuster, Fleur Sibbel and Wilhelmina McCarroll, are the daughters of Melbourne homebuilder and craftsman Meyer Sibbel of Sibbel Builders. Jacqui says it was the perfect fit. “Using bathroom furniture pieces from the Zuster x Reece collaboration allowed us to incorporate modern pieces that linked seamlessly with the ‘soul’ of the house,” says Jacqui. “The pieces we chose had design features that linked in so well with our home’s original elements: rich wood with strong grains and butterfly handles.” Jacqui says the key to her home’s styling is adding pieces that she genuinely loves. “As opposed to styling our house with a theme or look, our home is a collection of items that reflect our family’s history and tastes – from artwork collected during my time as a gallerist to a substantial collection of living plants and ceramics, of course,” says Jacqui. Complementing materials such as stone and timber with textural elements like linen, Jacqui has created an overall effect that sees the home – with its views of greenery from every room – meld with the outdoors. “For me, home is a place where you can unwind after a long day, and the natural elements really lend themselves to this.”

STYLING TIPS

1 2 3 4

86

Choose the largest plant to act as the focal point of the arrangement, then add smaller, complementary specimens in differing shapes to round out the scene. Use a consistent colour palette with your pots and plant accessories, so your green scene is soothing to the eye and the focus remains on the plant life. Choose a mix of plant varieties and textures, just as you would find in nature, to add depth and interest to your arrangement. Don’t be afraid to add plant accessories like watering cans or tools, or even decor pieces like books and sculptural objects. The addition of interesting shapes can often be the finishing touch you need.
