THE

EDITION

Part of this self-renewal includes purging unwanted items from my home. Things can quickly accumulate over a year, and I’m not one for clutter. I don’t know about you, but taking out the rubbish, dropping off old clothes/accessories to an opshop, or even selling off bits and pieces on Gumtree brings me a little piece of joy. I’d even venture to say letting go of things that no longer have sentimental value or purpose has become quite addictive. As the Netflix documentary Minimalism (highly recommended) will attest, there are many benefits of living with less, and quality over quantity. And this ‘fresh start’ issue of Adore would definitely agree: We feature clean, uncluttered and above all, functional spaces – without sacrificing style. Speaking of clean, we also highlight how to create a chic, hardworking laundry – without the clothesbasket traffic. So, happy decluttering, readers. And if there are any items you simply can’t part with – in my case, my homewares – there’s no shame in surrounding yourself with what makes you happy, I say. Until next time,

Since its launch in 2000, AURA Home has become a highly successful brand – thanks to the style nous of Creative Director Tracie Ellis, who believes the brand’s aesthetic is a little bit Scandinavian, a little French, but also a whole lot of Melbourne. And while Tracie acknowledges there is a huge customer base that loves the convenience of shopping online, she’s excited to have launched her first concept store in November of last year. “Our new store is our place to meet our loyal customers and new customers, and inspire them to create beautiful spaces in their homes,” she says. The store is located in a beautifully refurbished, heritage-listed building that features a series of individual room spaces that have been impeccably styled and expertly curated. The interior boasts stunning brickwork, part of which has been rendered and finished with Porter’s French Wash – which

beautifully complements the outside wall of the store that is covered in lush, green ivy. Tracie worked with Melbourne-based interior designer Amanda Lynn, and was inspired by the concept of home and what that meant: “Rather than a traditional layout, we designed the store around areas in the home,” she says. “We wanted our customers to be inspired by how the products could work in their spaces. We have a living room area to showcase our cushions and throws; a dining area featuring our ceramics and linen; a beautiful bedroom space for our sheets and quilt covers; and a bathroom area draped with our beautiful towels.” In addition, the store is stocking products that complement the AURA collection: “We have worked with some very special people from some of our favourite brands to produce a curated range of products in our beautiful space,” says Tracie.

multifunction appliances

The humble tumble dryer and washing machine have come a long way. Combined appliances like Fisher & Paykel’s Washer Dryer Combo, which washes and dries a load in under three hours, save time and precious laundry space. Worried about the fabric of your favourite clothes? Fret not, says Fisher & Paykel’s Lan Nguyen – the machine offers no less than “ten optimised wash-to-dry cycles that care for every kind of load, from delicate to heavy”. It’s also very efficient, says Lan. “The 8.5kg/5kg model has a 5-star water rating, a 3.5-star energy rating for the dry cycle, and a 4-star energy rating for the wash cycle.” Meanwhile, Bosch’s ActiveOxygen washer removes bacteria from clothes without any additional chemicals besides your regular laundry detergent – and in cold water. Great news for those among us who loathe hand-washing delicates! Its Refresh Program also banishes aromas that have clung to clothes from pubs and restaurants – without the use of water – which is perfect for items that don’t necessarily need to be washed.

clever concealment

While laundry design typically focuses on hiding mess, the ultimate trick is disguising the entire laundry altogether! Common in compact European homes, concealed laundries are a smart, space-saving solution. This guest bathroom (pictured above) by The Designory hides appliances in a cupboard alongside a concealed sink. “The client wanted the room to look beautiful first, but be packed with functionality behind the scenes,” explains Director Melissa Bonney. The luxurious bathroom includes a long bench, cupboards and a hanging rail for laundry duties, which can be scaled back when there are guests. The Block alumni Kyal and Kara Demmrich maximise living space in a 60-square-metre holiday studio by making the bathroom multipurpose (pictured opposite). “The room primarily functions as a bathroom, and the laundry is not used on a daily basis,” says Kara. “If you’re considering concealing your washer/dryer, ensure you’re going to be happy to open and close cabinetry often.” adore home

LAUNDRY FEATURE

design features

Can cool design elements make doing the laundry a less irksome task? Simone Mathews of BAM Interior Design thinks so. She enlivened this laundry (pictured above) with lighthearted artwork and exposed copper pipes that appear to abseil down the wall to the sink. This laundry is simultaneously serious about storage, with cabinetry including a drawer under the sink (“often people find a cupboard awkward with the pipes”). An antique timber coat rack complements the rustic tapware and ties in with the style of the home. Homeowner Shelley Gunton turned an existing brick wall into a design feature by whitewashing it, and installing striking timber and black cabinetry (pictured opposite). “The open shelves are great for easy-to-reach items, but also work as a space for styling. The matching washer and dryer give it symmetry.” Simone and Shelley agree that greenery lifts a laundry zone. Small touches such as trays, baskets, towels, wall hooks, and storage containers also add character. “They have the different textures and functions that make a space look complete,” says Shelley.

hanging around

In petite laundry spaces, sometimes the only way is up: The ingenious hanging drying rack by New Zealand studio George and Willy operates on a pulley system, so you can hoist your laundry up and out of the way, and the warm air trapped in your ceiling space will help it dry. Wall hooks, hanging rails and even traditional-style clothes airers provide other practical options for drying on rainy days. In a dual bathroom/laundry, try a generous towel rack (shown left in this clever zone by MJK Building), which can accommodate laundry as well as towels.

stylish storage

A laundry can become a dumping ground for all kinds of miscellaneous household items – from pet paraphernalia to sports equipment – and of course, piles of washing. Clever designs like these however, transform a utility space into a zone that’s both hardworking and handsome. Anna Smith of Annabode + Co. stacked her washer and dryer (pictured on opposite page), maximising space for cabinetry and closets that hide her water heater, skis, bikes, paint cans, lightbulbs, old blankets, camping equipment, craft stuff, cleaning supplies and more – impressive! Meanwhile, a copper-wire basket and glass canisters keep laundry supplies within easy reach. “Glass canisters elevate everyday objects like clothes pegs,” says Anna. “And it's helpful for when we

have guests – they don't have to hunt for anything.” Hanging racks, as seen in these laundries (on this page) by smarterBATHROOMS+ and professional renovators Kara and Kyal Demmrich provide handy space for delicates, kids’ clothes, school uniforms and ironing. “The ironing board is recessed into the opposite wall, and we customised the door front to match the rest of the laundry,” explains smarterBATHROOMS+ Design Manager Vanessa Cook, whose laundry design (pictured above) also makes room for dog necessities, tennis racquets and sports shoes. All three also incorporate open shelving, which is, as Kara points out, “a great way to break up the clinical feel of the laundry, and an opportunity to provide style and personality.” adore home

Switching to paint has meant a completely different way of working. “When I conceive a print, I often spend just as much time contemplating and planning the work as I would actually creating it,” Emma explains. “More recently, I’ve pushed away from this in favour of experimentation – painting, to me, is a brilliant way to break the rules and express myself in a more raw and spontaneous way. It’s reversed the process for me. “Instead of me telling the work what I want it to be, my new work evolves on instinct and my reactions to the developments on the canvas. I have no idea what a painting is going to look like when I start. This breakaway has been very meaningful to me, both creatively and personally.”

In Emma Itzstein’s new paintings, instinctive brushwork gives way to floral musings, exploring a tension between wild abandon and quiet contemplation. A cross-country move from Perth gave Emma Itzstein the momentum to shift her practice from printmaking to painting. She’s now working out of her studio in Geelong, and the resulting paintings are set to be exhibited at No Vacancy Gallery at Melbourne’s Federation Square in October.

Beginning by applying layers of paint in washes and making marks using her palette knife, Emma works quickly: “I grab whatever calls to me and just go a bit nuts.” After the initial abandon, she approaches the canvas in a more measured way. “My overlay of florals becomes a more conscious process, albeit still very loose. The process moves from one of tension and mania to something more composed, peaceful and centred.” Her playfully executed florals are “a visual cue to stop and appreciate the uncomplicated beauty and pleasure in life”. Recalling the flower children of the ‘60s, Emma’s works also give a nod to Warhol and his Pop Art contemporaries. Her favourite flowers? Magnolias. “They have such a gorgeous, sculptural quality and timeless beauty.”

A statement front door is not for the faint of heart, and for Andrea Pienaar of SIBA Interiors, it wasn’t a decision she took lightly. In fact, she tried 13 different sample pots of paint before she settled on her perfect blush shade Taubmans Beige Pink. It is this love of colour and design, that makes the Perthbased home she shares with husband Stef and sons Max, Griffin, and Jasper (and Gypsy the dog) such an inviting space. The family moved into the house three years ago, and completely gutted and renovated 12 months ago: “We loved the fact that it was big enough for our crazy family, and loved the character of it – original, pressed tin ceilings, and lots of quirks.” While aware of not detracting from the character of the older-style house, the couple completely gutted the bottom level and changed the layout – the only part they didn’t touch was one bedroom at the front! They added a new kitchen, laundry, scullery, bathrooms, floors, landscaping and cladding. With such a mammoth task, it was fortunate that Andrea already worked in the industry. “SIBA (her business, Style It By Andrea) started as a

niggling desire to work in the interiors industry about six years ago,” she explains. What began as a property and interiors styling business has since evolved into a bespoke interiors styling service. That said, sometimes too much knowledge proved to be a hindrance on the renovation. “My indecision was chronic,” Andrea laughs. “Just when I thought I’d settled on a general look, I’d find a new product or colour scheme and second-guess everything.” Gravitating toward a natural aesthetic, Andrea used natural timber finishes and brass fixtures to create a fusion of Scandinavian/boho style in her home. “I generally love a bit of colour, but started off quite neutral with my palette and added colour in my soft furnishings and furniture,” she says – discounting that pink door, of course. “There’s no denying I am in a pink haze, at the moment. With three boys, I feel like the bits of pink I’ve been inserting into our lives is me asserting some feminine influences amongst the footy balls and bits of Lego. I think my husband just knew there was no arguing with me on that colour choice, plus he’s used to me having seemingly crazy colour ideas I don’t budge on.” >

S W E E T S T R E E T A P P E A L Andrea has lovingly brought back the charm of her character home with a classic black and white colour palette. The front door painted in Taubmans Beige Pink adds a soft, feminine touch. “The pink door was something I had wanted to do for a long time,” says Andrea. “Truth be told I have always been partial to this particular colour and I am loving that it is so prevalent in the design world right now.”

A N D R E A ’ S F A V O U R I T E S When asked about her favourite pieces in the home, Andrea cites her cockatoo print and Honore ‘Croisette’ armchair from Bastille and Sons. “My cockatoo print is one of my favourites, explains Andrea. “I love black cockatoos – they come and sit and squawk in the tree in our backyard and make a huge mess but I think they are so full of personality. I also adore my armchair – the combination of the green velvet (which I love) and the brass finishes just tied in everything so perfectly.”

Something else Andrea understandably loathed to budge on was the green, velvet armchair that now graces her lounge room. “Someone once said they thought that chair needed its own Instagram account. This was a piece of furniture I saw and just knew I had to have - at the sacrifice of buying plants for our landscaping.” It is this genuine love for all elements of her home that gives it ‘soul’ – from artwork choices that reflect the family’s passions, adventures and history, to the comfortable, sustainable furniture. It stands to reason that a home with such a delicious front door is filled with love and laughter – which is exactly what Andrea has achieved.

F R O N T E N T R Y Carla Fletcher’s ‘Bliss’ artwork sets the tone in the front entrance for the neutral colour palette throughout, and the predominantly Australian brands and designers’ products featured. Grey pot and plant from Ivy Muse.

K I T C H E N “The only requirement for the kitchen were new stools,” says Michelle. “I’ve used the ‘Crop’ stool from local company Relm on a few projects, and my clients always love them. The oak worked perfectly with the other pieces in the open plan living/ dining area and the four legs made this a really sturdy stool which is important when you have young kids.”

For Berivan Dubier, her husband, Shawn, and their two small children, moving from a Federation-style home to a freshly renovated, 1950s house in Melbourne’s Black Rock presented a challenge – how to furnish it. Their new place was ideal for a family, but lacked warmth. “It was basically a white blank canvas,” Berivan explains. Local interior stylist Michelle Hart was enlisted with a clear brief – make the home inviting, but keep it practical for a family with young children. The more traditional decor from their previous home didn’t suit their new space, so they opted to keep only a few artworks and two beloved silk rugs. “Berivan was drawn to the Scandinavian style with light timber finishes and pastel colours, but was very adamant about not making the living space appear overly feminine,” Michelle recalls. “Her interior style also crosses over to a more flowing, bohemian feel, so their home is quite unique to them – and quintessentially Australian. A lot of the furniture and artworks we selected were customised and made in Australia, by Australian brands and artists.” In the living room, a palette of navy, light grey and white, warmed with blush accents and tan leather, keeps the space soft but grounded. “I didn't want our living zone looking too feminine, as my husband would feel out of

“A lot of the furniture ia, and artworks were made in Austral by Australian brands and artists.” place,” Berivan explains. The room is anchored by a neutral Wilfred linen sofa and armchair, and a navy Andy armchair (all by Jardan), atop a woven rug from Halcyon Lake. Michelle mixed materials – a marble-topped Fenton & Fenton coffee table, timber Mark Tuckey side table, tan leather ottoman from Jardan, soft cushions and throws, and living greenery – to create a laidback, textured look. The living room is part of an open-plan dining room and kitchen. Though it’s a large space, Michelle says it was also the most challenging, as two long, thin windows along one wall interfered with the placement of a sideboard – “it ended up being halfway in the living room and halfway in the dining room, looking like it didn’t belong to either”. To solve the problem, she commissioned a large artwork by Australian artist Michael Bond, to unify the two zones. She then dispensed the sideboard and instead installed a Fenton & Fenton bench with a woven leather top. >

C O M F O R T A B L E L I V I N G “My favourite room would have to be our living zone where we spend most of our time,” says Berivan. “The sofas are so soft and comfortable and the colour palette of navy and neutral tones has created a very peaceful vibe.” Sofa, armchairs, leather ottoman and wooden side table from Jardan; coffee table from Fenton & Fenton; Mark Tuckey ‘Egg’ stool; rug from Halcyon Lake.

Michelle styled the master bedroom as a restful retreat for tired parents. She lightened the space by switching the bedside lampshades from black to a white-and-oak combo, and installing a custommade bed upholstered in light grey fabric from MuBu Home. A photographic work – At Peace by Aussie photographer Joanne Piechota – adds another layer of tranquility. The home’s casual style flows out into its alfresco space, which is furnished with unfussy layerings of white, blue, and timber. Berivan chose to install lush, self-watering, vertical gardens (by PAPS Vertical Gardens) outside the kitchen window – and as a showstopping backdrop to the pool. The family is thrilled with the transformation of their home. “Michelle has this very relaxed and calm aura that translates into her styling,” Berivan says. “I couldn’t be happier!”

Sydney-based stylist Claudia Stephenson and homeowner Edwina Higginbotham share their story of the coastal style that endured – even when the home had other plans. PHOTOGRAPHY HANNAH BLACKMORE / WORDS BETH GRESHWALK STYLING + INTERIOR DECORATION CLAUDIA STEPHENSON

HOME TOUR

When Edwina and Andrew Higginbotham first bought their Castle Cove home on Sydney’s North Shore, they knew they wanted to update their kitchen, living and dining areas – but couldn’t satisfy their yearning for an open-plan renovation, just yet. With three littlies in tow and another on the way, the timing felt better suited for modern, family-friendly styling solutions that would last many years until the remodel. So, the Higginbothams contacted Sydney-based interior stylist Claudia Stephenson, who helped the time-poor parents uncover an enduring styling direction. Recalls Edwina, “Claudia was brilliant with narrowing down the style we wanted, and even better at getting us to make quick decisions. Once we knew what we wanted, everything she presented was pretty spot-on, so the process was quite simple.”

Choosing fixtures was initially challenging for the couple, since their selections needed to harmonise with the future overhaul. “There was a lot of back-and-forth on furniture choices, as they were undecided about whether to invest now or hold off until they re-do the whole house,” Claudia explains. After contemplating their ideas and playing devil’s advocate where needed, Claudia guided the pair toward lasting, neutral-toned pieces that wouldn’t date the overall look.

Together, Claudia, Edwina and Andrew determined a “contemporary coastal” look would perfectly complement the shoreline abode.

The decision would prove statement-making especially in the dining room, where the stylist paired a striking Mark Tuckey ‘Loop’ dining table in American oak with West Elm’s ‘John Vogel’ dining chairs: “Wanting a finished look, we went all-out with the rug, pendants, buffet and Aquabumps photograph, which sets the tone beautifully for the rest of the space.” Furthermore, the dining chairs would provide both comfort and durability “to withstand the four sets of feet that would be standing on them.”

The beach-inspired colour palette featured crisp whites and blues throughout the home. Moreover, “the timbers and glass complement the blues, and with such contemporary designs, you can focus on the gorgeous views out the floor-to-ceiling windows,” observes Claudia.

Such family-friendly sophistication would expand into the living area, where the couple replaced their outmoded leather sofas for GlobeWest ‘Vittoria’ slip sofas, offering washable covers that could easily be swapped for different colours.

>

D I N I N G D E T A I L S “Prior to me coming in, the Higginbothams were sitting on foldout chairs at a tiny table to eat, so having a gorgeous dining table was high on their wish list, recalls Claudia. “We completely switched the layout of the room and relocated the dining table to the front of the kitchen and moved the living space down the other end of the space.” Table from Mark Tuckey; chairs from West Elm; sideboard from Blu Dot; pendant lights from Beacon Lighting; throw: House and Garden throw from Myer; pot from Flower Power; rug from Coppola Home.

The revamped master bedroom was nothing a sleek Domayne ‘Dane’ bed couldn’t solve. Adding to the cool cosiness – criss-cross bedside tables and media lamps. As for the kitchen, what started with a fresh addition of Kmart metal bar stools and a Karlsson ‘Mr White’ clock became central to a life-changing decision: “I came home one day to find Andrew ripping up the beige carpet in the living room and jackhammering the tiles at the front entrance,” Edwina recalls. Seeing the transformative effect of the stunning floorboards beneath the carpet, the Higginbothams decided to make their open-plan reno a reality – demolish the wall between the kitchen and living/ dining area, and renovate the kitchen. Calling it “the best decision they could have made,” Claudia flipped the locations of the dining and living areas, allowing Edwina and her family to embrace a more practical flow and the breathable segmentation open-plan living provides. G R E E N C O U R T Y A R D “In time, the trees will grow and create a canopy in the courtyards so that the “fingers” of the pavilions will run through the “forest” and create beautiful spaces that are private and green,” says Bert. Here, the covered concrete walkway leads from the entrance of the living area through to the bedroom courtyard.

L I V I N G “The beams and the ceilings are all poplar, with a light grey wash. When you’re inside the house, the roof is reminiscent of an inverted boat hull,” says Bert. In the lounge, the ‘Zio’ lounge chair, ‘Cocktail’ chair and ‘Cloud’ sofa are all by Marcel Wanders, and the ‘Pig’ table by Front, is from Moooi.

South African-born Fiona Ferguson had the happiest childhood memories of holidays spent in St. Francis Bay on the Kromme River, with its idyllic river setting and beautiful canals. Following in her parents’ footsteps, Fiona and husband, Mark, bought a thatched bungalow in the St. Francis Bay marina. With four boys and an extended family to accommodate, however, they realised their modestly sized holiday home was too small and cramped. So, they found a bigger home along the river and contacted Cape Town architect Bert Pepler. As a starting point, Fiona gave Bert a magazine photo of a wood-panelled house on the water, along with her requirements of open-plan living, space to play, privacy, and the all-important connection with the beautiful setting. Otherwise, she was happy to let Bert pursue his own ideas.

created little courtyards throughout the outdoor premises. Planted with indigenous grasses, plants and trees, the spaces provide shelter and privacy, while integrating the indoors and outdoors. “Wherever you are in the house, I want you to feel like you’re connecting to the outside,” Bert says. Each barn was then designed to serve a different function: One (the first), a service wing; one for outdoor entertainment; one for living and dining; and two for sleeping.

Bert’s solution – a series of simple, barn-like buildings, inspired by those found on a farm. Says Bert, “The intention was to create a series of ‘long fingers’ that draw you into the property, open up to the garden, and provide views of the river.”

With each building, Bert departed from tradition in one significant way: “Thatch roofs normally rest on substantial brick walls providing stability and containment,” he explains. Instead, this home would support the thatch roofs on a series of columns, opening up the house. The addition of sliding doors furthers the feeling of transparency.

to create the feeling of weathered barn, says Bert. The Scandinavian feel of the timber creates a neutral backdrop that allows the brightly coloured furnishings and extensive brass detailing to stand out. AJ Bell and Carla De Fondaumiere of GDF Design Lab also worked on the interiors with Fiona. While the furnishings would reflect a diversity of influences, the guiding principle was a relaxing atmosphere that could accommodate family and fun, yet remain aesthetically pleasing. “It’s quite playful and fun,” says Carla. Furniture is minimal, allowing room for whimsy through pieces like the green Marcel Wanders cocktail chairs and statement pig table by Front for Moooi, in the lounge room. L O F T Y H E I G H T S Two of the bedrooms have loft spaces where friends and cousins can easily be packed in. Fiona says the boys love sleeping up in the lofts, especially when they have friends over. The lamps are wall-mounted ‘Type 75 Mini’ lamps by Artemide.

B E A U T I F U L B A T H R O O M S The bathrooms are an interesting mix of modern and traditional design features, predominantly in white and brass, but the overriding characteristic is simplicity. Contemporary hexagonal tiles contrast with the traditional basins. Each bathroom opens onto a private, planted courtyard with an outdoor shower.

There are also key pieces by Vogel Design. In the master bedroom, for example, a Vogel bed features a beautifully woven, bespoke headboard that evokes the geometries of traditional African patterning, while the commercial aesthetic of Shine Shine fabrics adds contemporary flare. Overall, the emphasis of the renovation is on the holiday experience. “We have lovely lunches around that huge table in that thatched area,” says Fiona, adding, “The kids have a riot playing between the courtyards and hiding under the benches.” There’s also space for lounging by the pool, and the communal basin in the kids’ sleeping area makes brushing teeth an event before climbing into the loft spaces above. “We should just move there, really,” laughs Fiona. “For all its beauty and comfort, the house is minimal and really liberating.” adore home

BIKINI With ‘Hot Lips, Chocolate Kiss’ as one of their signature cocktails, hip Seminyak hotspot Bikini revels in a playful irreverence. Having opened in early 2017, this premium dining experience fuses the urban flair of a New York loftstyle warehouse with the energy and vibe of Miami. Creative Culinary Director Jethro Vincent steers the menu vision: “We have broken it down so diners will be taken on a journey from mouthfuls to small and large share plates – with inventive cocktails to match,” he says. And what ensues are deliciously ingenious and whimsical gourmet creations.

PINKIE

PHOTOGRAPHY JAMES MORGAN / WORDS JACQUI GREIG

Opened late last year in the Melbourne suburb, Ivanhoe, Pinkie delivers on its promise of bold design and a fun, welcoming interior. Thanks to Melbourne-based design studio Biasol, the café is as much about community as it is about coffee and food, with an inviting interior inspired by colour, materials and functionality. “We combined dark, light, and rose pink glass bricks with black terrazzo and the existing concrete infrastructure, to create a colour and material palette evocative of postmodernist design,” says designer Jean-Pierre Biasol. Pink and white neon signs draw attention and inject energy, while stunning Elegance tiles work with the Taubmans Sampson and Red Red Wine colour scheme. By taking a contemporary and practical approach to a postmodernist palette, Biasol have designed a café that delivers deliciously fresh and functional form.
