EDITOR’S LETTER P I C T U R E D Floor and feature wall tiles from Tile Cloud; plain white gloss tiles from National Tiles; tapware from Phoenix; vanity and basin from Loughlin Furniture; LED mirror, glass panel and brass clips from Highgrove Bathrooms; plantation shutters from DIY Blinds.

EDITOR LONI PARKER Well, I bought a house and I’m slowly emerging from the haze of renovating the bathroom! I set about revamping my tiny, outdated bathroom two weeks before moving in, and we almost got there. We got it to a functional stage – all tiled, with the toilet and shower installed – but it was another three weeks before the vanity, shower glass panel and mirror were fitted. While living without those vital components drove me slightly crazy, my goodness was it worth the wait! The Loughlin Furniture vanity and basin are the heroes of the room, and the brushed gold tapware from Phoenix adds the perfect amount of luxe. If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me about those gorgeous textured wall tiles, I’d be able to retire (OK not quite, but they are a hit with everyone who lays eyes on them, myself included). In answer to the question I’m sure you’re about to ask, they’re from Tile Cloud! So, what did I learn on my renovation journey? For starters, I learned that you’ll save yourself a fortune if you project manage it yourself. Organising trades is not easy, and you’ll most 2

likely need to take time off work to stay on top of it all. I recommend apps like hipages, where you get yourself three quotes for each trade. It’s also worth asking family and friends for any tradies they recommend.

get my

BATHROOM STYLE

If you’re on a tight timeframe and someone cancels on you last minute, don’t be afraid to ditch them for someone who can do the job that day. I had it happen a couple of times and, with just two weeks to get it ‘move-in-ready’, there was no wriggle room. If one person wants to reschedule, it causes a domino effect and can throw out your whole reno timeline. Oh, and if you’re looking to get a vanity custommade or custom-coloured tapware, order well before you start renovating – a custom vanity can take about six weeks to make. Now that it’s all finished, I’m itching to get cracking on the laundry. This whole renovation thing is quite addictive!

“I draw inspiration for my paintings from the diverse local landscape – beaches, cliffs and volcanic plains.”

Tim Freeman painted in his youth and always possessed a strong artistic curiosity, but it wasn’t until two-and-a-half years ago that a birthday gift of watercolour classes stirred in him a dormant passion for painting. He developed his love of architecture, design and technical drawing working as a carpenter, which now helps him translate local scenery into hard-edged, minimalist landscapes and seascapes. With a nod to mid-century design, Tim says there’s a familiarity – nostalgia, even – to his work. “I draw inspiration for my paintings from the diverse local landscape – beaches, cliffs and volcanic plains,” says Tim, who lives with his family in Warrnambool, on Victoria’s famed Great Ocean Road. “It doesn’t matter what the season or the weather, there is always something to catch my eye and inspire me. We often spend weekends (or ‘family days’, as we call them) going for a drive to check out scenic spots and take photographs.” 14

adore home

Tim carefully composes his photos, and he then studies them to decide the feeling he’s trying to evoke. “At this point, I use some artistic licence and remove any element that will clutter the image and distract the eye,” he says. “I sometimes sketch the basic shapes of the composition, but most times I jump straight into Illustrator and start drawing.” Tim simplifies and pares back elements in Illustrator, working on getting the tonal range right. This process can take days, weeks or even months. Once he’s happy with it, he paints it on to hardboard or canvas, using masking tape, scissors and razor blades to achieve his signature clean, sharp lines. “It can be a tedious process,” Tim admits, “but the end result always makes it worthwhile.” Tim’s art is available through Madame Hunter.

“We wanted to provide customers with a space to connect, be inspired and feel joy, and I think we achieved that.”

PIP BRETT

A positive response from shoppers saw JUMBLED begin to outgrow its space by 2016, so Pip decided to house both stores under one – larger – roof. Teaming up with Melbourne-based Studio Esteta, Pip and Nick embarked on a nine-week renovation of a local Masonic lodge. The addition of a café, Nimrod’s, was Pip’s way of “creating a community and space where people could meet up, enjoy a coffee, and look at beautiful products”. “The building was old and dark, so we removed the ceilings to expose the roof framing,” she recalls. “We removed a lot of the brickwork and cut out two big openings into iglou and the back of the store, where Nimrod’s now sits. We painted everything white, lime washed the floors and ended up with the perfect space.” The urban-chic showroom – which Pip named The Sonic – provides an impeccable backdrop for JUMBLED’s selection of original art, bedding, rugs and homewares from Australia, New Zealand, Morocco and beyond. This includes exclusive collaborations with brands like Sage and Clare, plus products by emerging creators.

Visit the showroom at 33-35 Sale Street, Orange NSW

It all began over a poolside cocktail in Fiji. Having recently graduated with a fashion and textiles degree from University of Technology Sydney, Pip Brett decided she wanted to open her own fashion store. By the time she turned 22, Pip had opened her first business venture, iglou, in Orange in 2006. But shortly after she and her husband Nick purchased a home in the area, she found that her “biggest buzz” was coming from interiors. “To me, fashion and interiors are very similar,” she says. “All design practice follows the same principles of playing with colour, shape, texture and proportion. There’s nothing better than feeling great in what you’re wearing or coming home to your own space filled with the people and things you love.” So, when a shop became available for lease beside iglou in 2013, Pip jumped at the chance. She created JUMBLED – a homewares store showcasing “an eclectic mix of the different things I loved”.

Whether patrons are shopping by colour or by space, The Sonic demonstrates how diverse décor can work harmoniously. And with an ever-evolving array of stock, there’s always new inspiration in-store. “We love making up the beds, changing cushions and art, and showing how customers can recreate the look in their own homes,” Pip explains. Pip says her team strives to make customers feel special, with friendly, above-and-beyond service. This has included “whipping up a mood board showing a customer’s bedroom with new bedlinen and cushions, so they can see how it looks in-situ. There is no request too hard or too outrageous for us.” Add to that customer workshops and events, and it’s easy to see why Pip’s retail family has flourished. “We wanted to provide customers with a space to connect, be inspired and feel joy, and I think we achieved that,” she says.

DESIGNED BY FIONA TUCKER

Designed by his mum Fiona, four-year-old Lachie’s room reflects his love of animals. One of his favourite pastimes is to go walking at night with Rosie the family dog, spotting possums, owls and bats along the way. To create a room that reflects Lachie’s personality, Fiona incorporated animal art prints above his bed and his desk, where he enjoys drawing and reading. The colour scheme features Lachie’s favourites

animal-lover’s sanctuary

was central to Fiona’s initial design, creating a connection with the grey terrazzo in his ensuite. The ensuite has under-floor heating, and Fiona says she finds Lachie in there often, lying on the warm floor playing with his cars and dinosaurs. As for the other standouts, “The big boy’s bed was definitely a winner, and his room is filled with all of his favourite things, so it feels like his little sanctuary,” Fiona says.

DESIGNED BY FIONA TUCKER

Six-year-old Georgie is a girly girl; she loves princesses, dolls and unicorns, as well as drawing, art, reading and writing. When mum Fiona started designing her room, pink walls were a must. But it had to be the right pink; she chose a subtle hue with a hint of mauve (Dulux’s Watermelon Milk) to work in with her existing beloved pink chair and artworks. Plenty of throws make the room a cosy place to be, and a cushioned bench at the end of the bed doubles as a space to stow books. Builtin storage behind bi-fold doors in the ensuite houses Georgie’s dollhouse and other toys. Georgie can simply open the doors to access 24

DESIGNED BY INS RAFFAELA JENK Raffaela’s vision for her one-and-a-half-year-old Ollie’s room was serene and green, with plenty of natural materials. A little on the bohemian side, it also incorporates Raffaela’s three favourite styles: Scandi, vintage and retro. She loves how the wall’s lovely shade of green (which took many sample tins and a colour consultant to find) instantly draws you in. “Yet, when you’re in the space and you turn around you get the after-shock factor of that gorgeous wallpaper from Minnie and Me Interiors,” Raffaela says. “Also, I think what makes it special is some

of the individual pieces in his space: the rattan hutch, the cane chair, that epic tambourine, and then the gorgeous green cabinet.” The cluster of baskets on Ollie’s wall adds a point of interest in the room without dominating the space, and ties in nicely with the cane and rattan featured elsewhere in their home. Ollie loves his little hutch, where he can help himself to toys and books. “He also loves playing peekaboo behind the sheer curtains,” Raffaela laughs.

K I T C H E N “I ended up going with Caesarstone ‘Noble Grey’ for the kitchen benchtop instead of marble for its durability rather than the beautiful aesthetic of marble,” says Fiona. “The kids can do anything to the Caesarstone because it is resistant to everything, scratching, staining etc. I wanted to enjoy our kitchen and I didn’t want to stress about etching the marble!” Bar stools from The Family Love Tree; pendant lights from Lighting Collective; Sussex brass tap from Reece Plumbing; flooring from Smarter Timber Flooring.

Fiona Tucker and her husband Mark built their home in Melbourne’s beachside suburb of Beaumaris from scratch, designing a layout specifically for their family. The couple has two children (six-year-old Georgie and four-year-old Lachie), Mark’s teenage son Clay stays with them regularly, and they also have a beloved dog, Rosie. Fiona is the founder and owner of baby bedding and accessories company Mooi Baby. But, with her children past the baby stage, her attention has returned to her love of interiors. She and Mark are no strangers to the building game; Mark is a developer and Fiona is a full-time colour consultant. “It’s important for everyone to have their own little sanctuary to enjoy time out,” explains Fiona. Their house features a basement garage with lift and gym, five bedrooms with ensuites, open-plan living as well as a separate kids’ zone, and a to-die-for kitchen with walk-in pantry. Large homes run the risk of feeling stylistically disjointed, but Fiona’s careful design choices have ensured that this one has a unified identity. Parquetry floors, steel-framed windows, terrazzo, marble and brass make repeated appearances throughout the house, anchoring individual spaces to her overarching vision. “The parquetry floors are definitely my favourite, and the colours – warm honey tones with a touch of black in the timber grain and knots – are just stunning,” says Fiona.

32

“They are also so easy to maintain – great for kids and dogs!” The zigzag of the parquetry is echoed elsewhere (in boneinlay furniture, monochromatic rugs, and the kitchen’s angled wine rack). Similarly, the strong geometry of the home’s steel-framed windows is reiterated in internal doors and mirrors. A decisive use of black, including on the home’s show-stopping staircase, also works to integrate the bold linearity of the steel frames. Interestingly, these windows aren’t what Fiona initially envisioned. They were manufactured in China but, when they were delivered, “they were nothing like the thin, elegant windows that I had drawn up and specified,” Fiona explains. “We ran out of time, so they ended up getting installed. I didn’t know how I was ever going to live with them but they have since grown on me.” Fiona has softened the home’s interior by layering different textures and warmer elements. “I love natural products such as wicker, timber, stone, bone inlay, linen and beautiful handmade pieces,” says Fiona, describing her style as eclectic with coastal influences. “I am inspired by artwork, colour, homewares, fashion, travel.” Inexpensive macrame pendant lights bought on a recent trip to Bali and suspended above the dining room table are among Fiona’s favourite pieces. She also loves the hand-painted Moroccan tiles used on their steps outside the front entry and also incorporated on the home’s internal stairs. >

A carefully considered layout with plenty of storage space facilitates fun for the kids while cleverly managing the inevitable clutter. Georgie and Lachie’s rumpus room, which opens out onto decking with the jacaranda tree and cubby house beyond, adjoins the kitchen and main living space, meaning the kids can be supervised easily while they play. “I also put a huge custom-made barn door on this room, so we can easily hide mess and toys when we have visitors,” Fiona says. Durable materials were chosen for high-traffic areas, such as Caesarstone benchtops rather than marble in the kitchen (“The kids can do anything to the Caesarstone because it is resistant to everything”); sensible flooring (“Medium-grey coloured carpet is a great option for kids and pets, and the floorboards are also very low maintenance”); and washable paint on the walls. “I like my home to be organised yet still relaxed and inviting,” Fiona says simply. Now, with the hard work of designing and building behind them, the family is relishing their first year in what they hope will be their “forever home”.

Medium grey coloured carpet is a great option for kids and pets and the floorboards throughout are also very low maintenance. Washable paint is perfect for those hand-prints on walls especially when your walls are Vivid White! D I N I N G R O O M Sarah had her American oak dining table custom made by Tov & Co in Brisbane, after being inspired by a photo she found on Pinterest. “The whole room then came together from there,” says Sarah. “I like to contrast straight lines with curves and keep the overall feel light and bright for a Scandi look.” Dining table and bench seat from Tov & Co; chairs from Freedom; highchair from My Little Giggles; sheepskin from CO.CO.

V I N T A G E D A Z Z L E R Sarah likes to combine old with new. A vintage cabinet in the dining room displays her favourite ceramics and tableware. “The quality and character are so much better; it’s worth all the time spent restoring it,” says Sarah. “This cabinet is a work in progress to decorate! I’m happiest when it’s filled with all white items so it’s more about texture and layers, and not so much a focal point.”

This Melbourne house is home to Sarah, her husband Ben (a technology analyst) and their twin three-year-old boys, Caspian and Quill. It’s also headquarters of The Bear Cub Club, Sarah’s fashion and decor styling project, which has captured the imaginations of tens of thousands of followers on Instagram. The family moved into the house two years ago. “We were drawn to the size and layout, and all the light that floods into the upstairs bedrooms,” Sarah recalls. “The kitchen was newly renovated and the perfect open plan for family living.” The main living area – a lounge leading through to an open-plan kitchen and dining room – is a serene space styled in grey, blush and light timber tones against crisp white walls, with splashes of muted green foliage in pots, baskets and vases. “I chose a lot of blush tones for the practicality in terms of wear and tear. It’s a very calming colour to live in.” Sarah dreams of breathing new life into a builtover fireplace in the lounge (“It would add so much atmosphere to put a beautiful big fire in there!”), as well as converting the generous roof space above the dining room into a bedroom (“I’m completely obsessed with bedrooms built in attic spaces with slanting roofs”). Caspian and Quill are lucky enough to enjoy two

“I want the house to feel inviting and warm, as well as beautiful to look at.” playrooms – one downstairs alongside the living zone, and one upstairs with the bedrooms. Practically speaking, this decision means that the children have a dedicated space for play on either level of the home – and Sarah has been strategic about how she’s designed each of them. The upstairs playroom (see page 22) is a timbertoned wonderland that Sarah regularly restyles and reworks for the boys. The focus in this zone is on larger equipment, including a slide and swing, which keeps clutter to a minimum and gives the children space for energetic, imaginative play. The downstairs playroom, on the other hand, houses things like puzzles, car sets and soft toys. “We have shelves with big tubs hidden in the cupboard in that room but it’s a constant battle to keep it tidy!” Sarah admits. Nevertheless, “it’s great to have a room downstairs to hide all the toys, which saves the lounge getting taken >

over too much”. For Sarah, styling their family home is all about balance. She plays with height, teaming low-slung furniture with taller pieces and hanging items, and also enjoys contrasting round edges with straight lines. Throughout the home – including the dreamy master bedroom – romantic, whimsical flourishes are grounded by family-friendly decor choices and smart approaches to materials and layouts. Unsurprisingly, Sarah’s a fan of Scandinavian design “with a slightly vintage feel”. Above all, this mama bear is a lover of sunlight – she mentions it repeatedly during our interview. “I like to maximise all the light available and create little cosy pockets within the home,” she says. “I want the house to feel inviting and warm, as well as beautiful to look at.” Judging by the delight on her little cubs’ faces and the crowds of social media admirers, it’s safe to say that she’s succeeding.

PHOTOGRAPHY TANYA ZOUEV / WORDS BETH GRESHWALK

By the sparkling shores of Lake Macquarie in NSW, Anna Moore and her husband Aaron have achieved a coastalchic home that’s perfect for their family.

E N T R Y A small nook by the staircase has been given an affordable makeover with the addition of a mirror from Kmart and a console table found on Gumtree.

T H R I F T Y F I N D S “I am always searching for cane items on Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace because I have a real soft spot for anything rattan and cane,” explains Anna. “I found these cane chairs on Gumtree and I knew I needed them for the dining room. At just $80 for five, it was a no-brainer. They complement my cane bar stools, which are also a Gumtree find.” Dining table from Early Settler and rug from Freedom.

If there’s anything most families would truly appreciate, it’s a forever home that feels like a holiday. And that’s just what Anna and Aaron Moore have created for themselves and their children, Hallie (11), Jake (8) and Alahni (5), in Newcastle, NSW. Anna, a furnishings showroom consultant, and Aaron, an electrician, began phase one of their renovation within the first six months of purchasing their two-storey, split-level home on Lake Macquarie in 2013. Aaron tackled the labour with trade assistance as needed, while Anna, pregnant with their youngest child, designed the home’s overall look. The first upgrade on the agenda? An open-plan living area, which meant removing the archway that separated the lounge and kitchen. “Having the wall separating the spaces made the house feel dark, small and dysfunctional,” Anna recalls. “We have so much light in the kitchen now, and being able to see the lake from the kitchen is a bonus.” Next came a fresh white coat of Taubmans ‘China Doll’ throughout the home. The flooring also needed replacing; Anna opted for bamboo floors in the main living areas. And, while the kitchen’s layout was workable, the Moores revived the heart of the home with all-new appliances, benchtops and cabinetry. In the meantime, Anna (who went on to achieve a Diploma of Interior Design in 2017) was busily harnessing her inner creative (and Pinterest!) to create a stunning new scheme for the entire abode. “Living by the lake, I wanted the

56

house to feel like you were on holidays, with a coastal look,” she explains. Selecting a neutral palette with a blue nod to the shoreline, Anna used texture to create interest. “White walls with warm timber flooring and jute rugs was the base, and I’ve added secondhand and vintage pieces, like my rattan dining chairs, to give the house a not-so-perfect polished look.” After pausing to welcome baby Alahni to the family, the Moores began phase two of their renovation on the downstairs level in 2017. Formerly a self-contained unit with a bedroom, bathroom, kitchenette and living area, “it didn’t really suit the needs of our family,” says Anna. “So, we turned the kitchenette into a fifth bedroom, and made the bathroom a ‘two-way’ that you could access from both bedrooms.” They later extended the outdoor deck upstairs to create an elegant space for dining and entertaining. Even the Moore children lent a hand in the reno, helping Anna to style their bedrooms. Hallie’s “artycrafty’” personality inspired an injection of bolder yet complementary colour in her room, along with a framed watercolour she’d painted. In Jake’s room, his fondness for blue is evident in artwork set against walls half-covered in Taubmans ‘Stormy > Shadow’.

L I V I N G “We have a lot of glass at the front of the house to take advantage of the view. Glass can sometimes feel a little cold, so we installed sheer curtains to soften the space, and it has made a huge difference to the look and feel of the living room,” says Anna. “We used a long piece of bamboo and S hooks to create the rod and the sheer curtains are from Freedom.” Sofa from Harvey Norman; pendant light from Wanderlust 4 Lighting; occasional chair from Adairs; coffee table from Mocka; jute rug from Freedom; wool rug from Floorsome.

As for Alahni’s request for a “pink sparkly bed” in her room? A shining success, thanks to a Gumtree find that Anna painted in a dusty pink and adorned with a canopy of gold sparkles.

Triumphs in the design department had to be balanced with the realities of family life, Anna points out. “Having a family meant everything we chose had to be able to take knocks from the kids.” She credits the Polytec’s ‘Venette’ fingerprint- and scuff-resistant surface used behind her kitchen island for “hiding grubby marks from kids running their feet up and down the cupboards”. “Sea Tribe cushions and throws are also great quality,” she adds. “When the kids get them dirty, I put them in the wash and they come out brand new.” Anna’s bamboo flooring has also proven its durability for six years and counting – along with the addition of soundproofing underneath “so the rooms downstairs are protected from the sound of noisy kids running around”. Now that’s a holiday.

Don’t be afraid to source secondhand furnishings or building materials. Saving money where you can means you can splurge on other items.

Do your homework and gather inspiration from places like magazines, Pinterest and Instagram. Having a clear idea of how you want a space to look will make the selections for the renovation much easier.

Design for yourself if it’s your forever home. I can count the amount of times I have used a laundry sink on one hand, so when I designed the laundry, I decided not to put one in. The bench space for folding washing was more important to me.

Creative director Stephanie Vogler brings enduring coastal elegance to her family home in Vancouver, British Columbia.

S U N R O O M “The biggest change we made, before we even moved into the house, was painting the sunroom’s walls. It was a classic den, with dark wood panelling and dark red brick. I was insistent that we refresh the room and thankfully our landlord was cooperative,” says Stephanie. “The plants are inspired by my travels to LA, one of my favourite places to visit. Vancouver is a very rainy city for much of the year, so this little oasis reminds me of the sun and warmth of California.”

When Stephanie Vogler, her husband John Pierce and their children Hudson (12) and Emerson (11) ditched condo living for their 1930s-style rancher home three years ago, Stephanie was ready to embrace single-level family living in style. Her enthusiasm is understandable; the fourbedroom abode is situated in West Vancouver’s North Shore mountains, with the Pacific Ocean in clear view – talk about inspiration. The creative director of Vancouver’s The Cross Décor and Design has adored décor, textiles and colour since she was young, when she assisted at her parents’ own creative businesses, including a hair salon and fabric shop. Having built a career sourcing inspiration and the latest in interiors, Stephanie couldn’t have been more ready to adorn her own home. “I wanted to start with a blank canvas,” she recalls. “It’s my philosophy to begin with a white base to layer texture, pattern and colour onto, which you can easily change up with the seasons or whatever suits your mood.”

“I’m a believer in slipcovered furniture. I love the slouchy look and the washability.” ocean view.” Painting the room white with matching décor accomplished this, while adding “limitless potential” and sparking its transformation into a sunroom. “The sunroom is a multi-use space, decorated to create a sense of calm,” Stephanie explains. “It’s a great sitting area for reading, a yoga room, a craft space for my daughter, or a painting studio.” The addition of vibrant succulents, cacti and a fiddle leaf fig were inspired by her beloved travels to Los Angeles, evoking the sun, warmth and vibe of California.

Of course, attaining the look involved some work – particularly in the den, which originally featured dark wood panelling, red brick and a “black hole” fireplace.

A bright, intriguing oasis, the sunroom set a precedent for the rest of the home – including the decision to replace the main living area’s black granite mantel with mother-of-pearl mosaic tiles. Stephanie also added earthy and light blue accents that echo the nearby sea – especially evident in the fabrics and wood furnishings throughout, and standouts like the main living area’s blue tufted sofa.

Says Stephanie, “I wanted the room to feel light and airy. The room has large windows that take in the sky and

Always start with less. A good purge (hello, Marie Kondo!) is the best place to start when decorating. Only keep what you really love and what inspires you.

Pick a colour or two you love and work around that, adding interest with textured fabrics and throws, wood surfaces and interesting art.

Set up a few rules early on. I decided, with help from a designer friend, that my main living areas would have no metallic finishes. That way, I could achieve a more natural and relaxed look. This really helped me rein it in when it came time to purchasing accessories.

The art really came to life.” Her secrets to a family-friendly interior? “I’m a believer in slipcovered furniture. I love the slouchy look and the washability.” Stephanie swears by the quality of Cisco Brothers slipcovered sofas, and also IKEA for “cheap, cheerful” and functional furnishings. The dining room’s BESTÅ unit, for example, fits the space while storing table linens, glassware and homework supplies. If you’re keen on designing a divine yet durable interior like Stephanie’s, she recommends starting with “a good purge” – keeping only what you love and what inspires – to help determine your décor scheme. “Pick a colour or two you love and work around that, adding interest with textured fabrics and throws, wood surfaces and interesting art,” she advises. “Set a few rules early on. Step straight off the sand and into The Pavilion Bar’s casual outdoor space. The terrace area offers an extensive list of tasty bar bites, including woodfired pizzas, burgers, salads, beer-battered fish and chips, and a French dip steak sandwich. But it’s the interiors – thanks to Alexander & Co – that really have us swooning. burleighpavilion.com

URBAN-COOL S TAY I N P E R T H QT Perth is an ideal base for discerning travellers in the heart of the CBD. Merging industrial glamour with a contemporary urbancool aesthetic, its design gives a nod to the excess of 1980s Perth during the mining boom. Sprawled over 18 storeys, its well-appointed rooms are a natural extension of the chic public spaces, which feature a restaurant, café and drinking spots including a rooftop bar. qthotelsandresorts.com/perth

VISIT THE BOATHOUSE SHELLY BEACH

PHOTOGRAPHY SEAN FENNESSY

Beachy keen on oceanfront dining? Make a beeline for The Boathouse Shelly Beach – a café and kiosk with an upper-level events space, right on Manly’s Shelly Beach. Decked out with nautical nuances on a coastal white backdrop, The Boathouse is a picturesque breakfast or lunch spot if you’re fond of modern Australian and seafood dishes. Smoked salmon fritters with poached eggs, anyone? Or perhaps grilled barramundi with fennel, cucumber, apricot and lemon – served with a green salad of avocado, peas, cucumber, celery, edamame and pomegranate? Paired with a coffee, wine or cocktail, this is seaside feasting at its finest.

Find it hard to resist Cantonese cuisine? It just got even more tempting, thanks to Queen Chow Manly, where sweet ‘n’ sour pork, roast duck, mud crab and Peking beef are exquisitely prepared in a restaurant that brings Hong Kong to the heart of Manly Wharf, serving up local produce and seafood. The interior fuses the elegance of traditional Asian artwork, screens and dark wood with Manly’s sophisticated coastal vibe, and it includes an oyster bar – there’s no better place to enjoy a leisurely dim sum or sip a Beijing Daisy while waiting for your lunch or dinner.

THE PANTRY MANLY The Pantry Manly is a tasty choice for those craving a little of everything while taking in an authentic Manly Beach vibe. Built just off the shore in 1919, The Pantry was a teahouse before becoming the Manly Ocean Beach House restaurant, and finally The Pantry in 2010. This local stalwart serves up delicious meat dishes, fresh seafood and sharing plates cooked to modern Australian perfection. Star dishes include freshly caught rock oysters, barramundi and kingfish sashimi, and the barbequed brisket burger and potato croquettes are not to be missed. Open for breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner.

HUGO’S People have been raving about Hugo’s Manly since 2009, and it’s no wonder: positioned directly on Manly Wharf, Hugo’s effortlessly combines awardwinning Italian cuisine and cutting-edge cocktails with laidback, open-air dining. Lunch or dinner, you can start with delicacies like grilled Yamba king prawns with garlic butter, or dig right in to succulent mains ranging from roasted beetroot risotto to spaghettini with spanner crap, or pork and beef meatball pizza. With a yummy kids’ menu to boot, life couldn’t get more delizioso on the wharf.

MANLY GREENHOUSE

PHOTOGRAPHY SEAN FENNESSY

Manly Greenhouse takes botanical beauty and dining to the next level – or three levels, to be exact. Sydneybased Luchetti Krelle designed this arboretum-inspired beachfront venue, which includes three floors of gastronomic bliss offset by lush greenery, natural light and steel-framed glass. At ground level, it’s all-day modern Italian and woodfired pizzas, plus a beachside bar. Thinking more refined? The middle level sings with selections like Riverina rib-eye, wood-roasted John Dory and unique wines. Or savour panoramic views over cocktails and bar snacks – think prawns, cured meats and polenta – at the rooftop bar.

ROLLERS BAKEHOUSE Life is short, but that’s not the only reason you’ll want to eat your pastries first at Rollers Bakehouse. A short jaunt from Manly Beach, Rollers is renowned for its mouth-watering range of sweet and savoury croissants – from sumptuous charcoal-dyed chocolate croissants with double chocolate and crumble, to ‘sushi roll’ croissants filled with salmon, ginger, nori and wasabi. Rollers’ modernist dining setting featuring concrete, tiling and plants invites you to nosh and drink coffee in style at a pink communal table or spectator’s bench.

SAKÉ, MANLY What could be more idyllic than relishing fresh sashimi while taking in dreamy views over Manly Wharf? Saké’s good looks and stellar cuisine make for a memorable Japanese dining experience, whether you’re sipping umeshu on the expansive terrace or scanning the supreme selection of sushi, sashimi and nigiri rolls in the restaurant’s minimalist interior. Here, designers Luchetti Krelle have recreated the refined essence of Saké’s five other locations, with floor-to-ceiling bi-fold windows, natural woods and lantern-esque lighting – plus a striking 40-seat sushi counter at the heart of the eatery.
