Adjusting to Your New Pet by Tamara Borland V.M.D. Bringing a new pet into the home, while exciting, can be quite an adjustment. Keep in mind they are entering a new home with a new family and the transition will take time. But with preparation and patience your new furry friend will be part of the family in no time. Doing some planning before your new pet arrives will help ease the transition. Start by getting necessities like food, a collar/leash, litter and litter pans, a bed, toys and ID tag. Also, have a family discussion before the pet arrives to determine a routine. Prevent stress on your new pet by working out a schedule and house rules that each family member is on board with. Consider when your pet will be fed, walked, who will perform each duty, and come to an agreement about which areas are off limits. Having consistent rules avoids mixed messages and ensures greater success.

Once your pet is home, itʼs important to take them to a veterinarian. Bring any medical history, including vaccinations to your vet. This will ensure your new pet is healthy and protected from any contagious diseases. If you already have pets in your house, make sure they are also fully vaccinated. Now, training! It is your job to teach them right from wrong. Use positive reinforcement with treats and attention to reward good behavior. Physical reprimands tend to make a pet nervous and can lead to aggressive behaviors. Potty training can be a challenge and crate training is a great way to increase success. Make sure the crate is only big enough for them to stand up, turn around, and lay down. Crating for long periods of time is discouraged, but for short periods will help prevent accidents. Puppy/obedience classes are strongly recommended to help socialize your new pet and ensure a well-adjusted pet for years to come.

Play time! Remember, an exercised pet is a happy pet. Play encourages bonding moments and decreases boredom, which translates to naughty behaviors (digging, chewing, barking). Keeping them active will curb these unwanted behaviors. With time and patience you will learn each other's languages and create a beautiful, loving relationship! Dr. Tamara Borland earned her VMD from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA. She is inspired by the ever-changing climate of veterinary medicine and enjoys ensuring that every patient receives the highest quality of care. Visit her at the new Antioch Veterinary Hospital, 5151 Deer Valley Road or 1432 W. Tenth Street. Birthday Party Themes 1.

by Elizabeth Schroeder

Polka Dot Party (0-3) Perfect for preschoolers, a polka dot party allows little tikes to explore their shapes and colors while enjoying the whimsy of circles. Kids can color and draw on circular cut-out paper, complete connect-the-dot puzzles, or use circle stickers and buttons to decorate paper goodie bags or paper hats. Play polka dot bingo or take turns taping black dots on a paper Dalmatian dog. Continue the theme by using a circle cookie cutter on sandwiches and even serve cheese and melon balls or circle peanut butter crackers.

2

. Wild Jungle Party (3-5) If your birthday child is crazy for creepy crawlies or has jungle fever when it comes to exotic animals, this is the party for you. Transform your house into a wild oasis with hanging, streamer vines and cut- out leaves from poster board. Invite the kids to attend dressed up as their favorite jungle animal. Set up a wild expedition obstacle course complete with dangerous towel quicksand, floating rocks (pillows) atop lava, and plastic snake traps. Play jungle charades or have a tree frog toss where kids throw these sticky toys at a wall covered with paper leaves.

3.

Pirate Party (3-6) Young scallywags will have a ball while pillaging and plundering through the backyard. Make your own hooks with plastic cups, cardboard cutouts, and foil, hand out eye patches to wear, and serve pirateʼs booty to every hungry little numskull. Experienced sea dogs will love to walk the plank over a kiddy pool, search for booty during a scavenger hunt, or make their very own spyglass out of a toilet paper/paper towel tube and colored cellophane.

4. Tea and Princess Party (4-7) Calling all princesses! Have all party attendees dress up in pretty dresses, sun hats, and even fancy gloves. Ask them to bring their favorite stuffed animal or doll to share in the partyʼs festivities. Enjoy the afternoon decorating sugar cookies, cupcakes, and paper crowns. Royalty in training will love snacking on miniature tea sandwiches and sipping on decaffeinated fruit - flavored teas.

Sleepover/Campout Party (7-10) No youngster is ever too old for a sleepover, especially when it means pitching a tent for a night spent in the back forty. Have the kids come over already bundled in their outdoor sleepwear. Munch on popcorn while watching a movie projected on a screen or white sheet tied between two trees. Set up a fire in a backyard pit and gather around for a sʼmore or two while telling campfire stories. Before falling asleep under the stars, end the evening with a bang as you help the kids search for the different star formations up in the sky. August 2011 ACTIVE KIDS 13

Firefly Night by local author, Evanne Jordan Firefly Night follows the adventures of A.J. and his sister as they set out to catch fireflies on a warm summer evening. Young readers will delight in the beautiful and whimsical hand-painted illustrations of the fireflies, and will enjoy counting the sequenced sets of fireflies on each delightful page. When A.J. and Sidney decide to release their fireflies to the night sky, they learn, as young readers will learn, that ultimately nature should be returned to nature. They also receive a special message from the fireflies! Author Evanne Jordan was encouraged to write by her third grade teacher and has been an Early Educator / Trainer for over 30 years. She currently works in schools throughout the East Bay, including Joyful Beginnings and Child Day School in Lafayette. Would you like a reading at your school, librar y, or children’s store? Evanne is available for author nights/fundraisers for public and private schools/non-profits. Contact Evanne at 925-288-9046 or e-mail EvanneJordan@sbcglobal.net. Get more info at www.firefly-night.com.

Firefly Night is available on Amazon.com, Kindle, BN.com and Smashwords.com “Firefly Night brought back memories of summer nights spent catching fireflies and watching them light up in a jar. Children of all ages will enjoy the poetry. Little ones can learn by counting the fireflies. A gem.” 5 Star Customer Review by Gale at Amazon.com.

If youʼre like any other busy parent, quickly running out of time and energy to plan your childʼs birthday party celebration, look no further than UFC Gym. Known as the number one place to have the “ultimate birthday experience,” you can count on UFC Gym to make your childʼs birthday party one all the kids will remember. They get the party started with their professional, low-maintenance approach to party fun. Seriously. Get ready to sit back, relax, and toss the hassle and headaches aside for one very special day. Plan your party at UFC Gym and you and your child will take part in a mentally and physically engaging day, full of playtime. Enjoy mixed martial arts activities in the octagon play station, programmed to your childʼs age and abilities. Come with some experience or none at all! Your child and guests will engage in a mixed martial arts class where they will learn how to throw punches and kicks all in a structured and respectful learning environment. Receive 1 hour of free-play tailored to your childʼs interests (freeze tag, relay races, obstacle course). And take comfort in knowing every party-goer will be included because games played at UFC Gym reinforce teamwork and group involvement. After some serious play time, take a breather in your very own private party room where you can gather round, eat cake, and watch the birthday child open presents. Each party guest will also enjoy a special prize package of their very own, compliments of UFC Gym. Enjoy the option to bring your own food and party supplies, or choose from a menu of kid- friendly snacks from the gymʼs Armbar Café. Trained personnel will also help you through the complete planning process, all the way up to executing your childʼs special day, chaperoning activities, and will even take care of post party clean up. Being part of a family is about acceptance and belonging; being a part of a community where your presence, your needs, and your contributions matter. It says, “You are wanted, and you are important.” In our world of change, it is more important than ever to instill a sense of belonging in your children; belonging is an anchor to help kids feel secure and confident. Itʼs easy to instill a sense of belonging when your children are small, but continue to send those reminders as they grow and develop their own personalities.

+ more!

- We offer exciting hands - on science camps for your pre - K & elementary kids at local recreation centers - Register through your Parks & Recreation Department

The need to belong continues as your kids grow up. Teens especially will need this reassurance during those turbulent years. Feeling misguided and lost, or lacking confidence and social placement are typical feelings for teens, so having a network of family support is crucial. Without reassurance and acceptance from the family, your young adults may look for satisfaction in other places (drugs, alcohol, gang activity, popularity, sexual activity, early dating); they may run away, engage in self-harm, or simply lose their direction.

- More Information (925) 687-1900 www.madscience.org/mtdiablo

Use these strategies to help anchor younger children, ultimately bringing them confidence and a sense of belonging down the road. Ritual and routine provide structure, a sense of safety and security, and breed a familiarity that anchors people together. Eat dinner in the kitchen, as a family, as much as possible. Drive your kids to school daily, and participate in school activities or volunteer programs. Make your children lunch everyday, so your kids know they are important and someone cares about them. Throw in special treats here and there as an extra surprise. Unique jobs transmit the message that your child is valued and needed. “Youʼre the best ice cream scooper in the family.” Story telling will help your son understand how special he is to you. “I remember so clearly the day you were born. I loved you the first time I laid eyes on you!” Repetitive sound bites help remind your child of essential messages. “Weʼre your family.” “Weʼve got your back!” “Your family will always be here for you.” “I will always love you.”

by Kim Rice When my son was diagnosed with autism in 2009, I immediately began to clean up everything that went into, onto and around his body. As I began my research, I was amazed at how much toxicity exists in our homes. Now more than ever, I am paying more attention to toxicity issues. Here are some of the changes I made in our home to reduce toxicity levels: Food: Buy organic foods as much as possible. Some heavily sprayed crops include almonds, rice and coffee. We also avoid genetically modified foods (GMOʼs) See a full list at: www.nongmoshoppingguide.com. Water: I filter almost all the water we use or consume. Reverse osmosis is great if you can afford it. If not, filter your water with a water filter pitcher such as Brita, PUR or Shaklee. Since your skin is like a sponge, itʼs also important to filter chlorine from your shower and bath water. A shower filter such as Lifekind or Aquasana is a great investment for your health. Kitchen Products: In the kitchen, I switched to phosphate and petroleum free, biodegradable dish liquid and dishwasher detergent. I eliminated dishwasher rinse and replaced it with vinegar. I replaced my all-purpose cleaners, glass cleaner and degreaser with Shakleeʼs H2 Organic Super Cleaner. Try BPA free glass containers by Pyrex and Anchor Hocking instead of plastic storage containers. Invest in high quality stainless steel and cast iron cookware (If you do use non-stick, try a high quality sauté pan by All-Clad or Calphalon, which feature the high end non-stick product). General Cleaning Products: Distilled white vinegar and baking soda are my mainstays for cleaning (you can buy bulk amounts at Costco). There are also many brands on the market such as Seventh Generation, Biokleen, Bright Green, Method, Ecover, Green Works, Earth Friendly Products and Shaklee. Laundry Products: My favorite “safe” laundry detergent is Shaklee, non-fragrance, but there are many good, biodegradable, non-toxic detergents on the market. Try vinegar for clothes with heavy odor. Shaklee also has a great brightening and stain product called Nature Bright Laundry Booster and Stain Remover. For added fragrance, add essential oil drops (such as lemon or orange) to a wet cloth and drop it in the dryer. Bathroom Cleaners: Try Green Works or Seventh Generation. I only use non-chlorine bleach when I absolutely have to use bleach. I properly disposed of our drain cleaner and invested in a drain “snake.” It works fine and ironically we have fewer clogs than before. Kim Rice is a Wellness Coach, gfcfcoaching.com, and mother of three children in Pleasanton writing about topics such as autism, depression, and diet and life transformation. She earned her BA degree in Journalism from the University of Detroit and has over 20 years of corporate writing experience.
