The northwest metro suburbs of Crystal, Golden Valley, New Hope and Robbinsdale offer top-notch parks, schools and health care options, as well as safe neighborhoods and easy access to downtown Minneapolis.

The four first-ring cities together have a population of almost 80,000 people.

The cities' roots are deep, going back to the late 1800s when settlers staked claims and carved out farms. Residential settlement Crystal I Robbinsdale continued to increase during the Golden Valley I New Hope early 1900s, and burgeoned after World War II. Three of the cities are wholly contained within Robbinsdale Area Schools district. Though Golden Valley originally had its own school district, it merged with Hopkins in the 1980s. Now, students in the southern portion of Golden Valley are enrolled in the Hopkins School District, while students living in the northern portion attend Robbinsdale Area Schools.

This community guide will offer information about each city's development, public safety departments, parks, schools, churches, major employers, shopping opportunities, festivals and other events. You will find additional information about the libraries and regional parks that attract large numbers of people to the area.

City of Golden Valley

Golden Valley City Hall.

Golden Valley rich with opportunity ‘Golden Valley represents the best of both suburban tranquility and urban style. Spacious lots, winding tree lined streets and gracious homes are part of a community that several international corporations call home.’

olden Valley was incorporated Dec. 16, 1886.

It was settled as an agricultural community of only a few hundred residents, full of farms, mills and dairies. Residential development began after the Electric Luce Line Railroad was cut through the village in 1912. The village became a city in 1972.

The city has planned a series of events to commemorate its 125th anniversary in 2011.

Today, Golden Valley is a first-ring suburb of 20,362 people five miles west of downtown Minneapolis, covering 10.5 square miles. The city is bounded by Interstate 394 on the south, Highway 169 on the west, Minneapolis on the east and New Hope on the north.

Four major highways - Interstate 394, Highway 169, Highway 100 and Highway 55 - bisect the city. The northern half of Golden Valley is in the Robbinsdale School District; the southern half is in the Hopkins School District.

The city has 8,600 housing units, 81 percent of which are owner-occupied. It also has 8,449 households and 5,508 families.

Golden Valley operates under the council/manager form of government; all five city council members (including the mayor) are elected at large. The council

– Golden Valley Mayor Linda Loomis meets on the first and third Tuesdays each month, and has a council/manager work session on the second Tuesday. All council meetings are cablecast on Channel 12, and also are live-streamed online.

The city employees 132 full-time employees. The police department includes a police chief, two commanders, 22 sworn police officers, six community service officers and a crime analyst. Golden Valley’s fire department was organized in 1943, beginning with sirens and phones to summon firefighters. It now has about 50 paid on-call volunteer firefighters, and about 150 seasonal employees.

The city has a $16.4 million tax levy.

Its downtown area at Highway 55 and Winnetka avenues encompasses the City Center complex, which includes a motor vehicle licensing bureau, a post office, a library, banks, and housing that combines townhomes with subsidized units.

Plenty of success found in Golden Valley by the city’s Historical Society. A video history of Golden Valley titled “Celebrate Golden Valley” was produced in 2003 by Curtis Laine of Studio 23.

Golden Valley--From Previous The city has a healthy tax base and a number of very large corporate citizens, including Allianz, KARE-11 TV, General Mills world headquarters, Graco, Pentair, Honeywell, Tennant Co., and Courage Center. Along the I-394 strip, numerous other business and entertainment places contribute to the city’s eclectic feel. Byerly’s is the city’s only grocery store.

Golden Valley has 10 community parks, 11 neighborhood parks, 14 nature areas, a Little League complex and a community center, and is the home of two golf courses: Brookview and the Golden Valley Country Club.

Brookview includes a grill, par 3 course, pro shop and driving range. The city has imposed a non-smoking policy in all the parks and on the golf course.

Sweeney Lake, Twin Lake and Wirth Lake are within the city’s boundaries, along with Bassett Creek, which meanders through wooded residential areas.

Golden Valley’s outdoor arts and music festival is held each May. Its precursor was the long-running Lilac Festival, named after the plethora of lilac bushes that once grew along Highway 100.

Other notable city events include Run the Valley Race and Walk in April, police and fire open house, Golden Valley Golf Classic, and Taste of Golden Valley.

The city has its own orchestra, plus an active senior citizens group, which is part of a five-city transportation program.

Clubs include an active Historical Society housed in its own historical building, Women’s Club, Garden Club, Lions, Optimists, Rotary, Women of Today, League of Women Voters, Golden Valley Envision Connection Project, Golden Valley Human Services Foundation and Golden Valley Events Foundation.

Golden Valley originally had its own school district, until a merger with the Hopkins School District in 1982.

Today, the city is home to two elementary schools (one in the Robbinsdale district and one in the Hopkins district), a learning center, two parochial schools, and a private school. The Perpich Center for Arts Education, a statewide arts high school, occupies a former Lutheran college site on Highway 55.

The city is home to 13 churches, including one of the largest Lutheran churches in the country.

Golden Valley has its own cemetery, at 27th and Winnetka avenues. It has its own VFW club and also an American Legion Post.

Golden Valley is part of the TwinWest Chamber of Commerce. The city also is home to the Animal Humane Society, Courage Center and PRISM food shelf.

Golden Valley had a very successful citywide Envision planning process in the mid-2000s that involved participation by 300 residents and has evolved into new programs and initiatives, including an annual lilac-planting day.

The 14-year-old visioning process now is centered on I394 development, Douglas Drive improvements, future addition of senior housing, and updated trails and transit.

The city also has a yearly photo contest for residents.

A farmers’ market is open each Sunday from late June to October under the water tower adjacent to the City Center complex.

Families come first in New Hope ‘A convenient location that is close to downtown and shopping, friendly neighborhoods, great schools, excellent road maintenance, many free activities, and a responsive city staff, make New Hope a great place to live.’

ew Hope originally was a farming community in Crystal Lake Township. In 1936, the city of Crystal was incorporated, taking up all of the former Crystal Lake Township.

Farmers in the western part of the city broke off and formed New Hope Township. In 1953, New Hope was reincorporated as a borough.

Today, New Hope is a five-square mile city of 20,824 people that borders Golden Valley on the south, 62nd Avenue on the north, Highway 169 on the west and Crystal on the east.

Its downtown area is the corner of 42nd and Winnetka Avenue, which is home to three strip malls that are under study for possible redevelopment.

The city has a Plan B council/manager form of government, employs 86 full-time and 16 part-time people (plus numerous seasonal staff members) and has a $9.2 million tax levy. The five-member city council, elected at large, meets on the second and fourth Mondays of the month, with work sessions scheduled on off-Monday nights. All regular council meetings are cablecast on Channel 16 and live-streamed online.

The city is served by the 70-member West Metro FireRescue Department, headquartered in New Hope, which resulted from the merger of departments in New Hope and Crystal in 1998. The West Metro board meets quarterly. The police department has a chief, a captain, five sergeants, three investigators, 16 patrol officers, three school resource officers, a crime prevention officer, a community service officer, and two canines.

– New Hope Mayor Kathi Hemken New Hope has 16 parks, its own nine-hole golf course, an ice arena, an outdoor swimming pool, skateboard park, two off-leash dog parks, and one of the few outdoor summer theaters in the state. The city shares community gym space at Cooper High School. It has two lakes: Northwood Lake and Meadow Lake.

It also has an annual photo contest for residents to enter.

Its annual three-day summer festival, Duk Duk Daze, is held in July at Northwood Park, 38th and Boone avenues. The New Hope Community Farmers Market was founded in 2009 to provide locally grown and produced foods and merchandise in an open-air market each Saturday from mid-June to mid-October in the Kmart parking lot, across the street from city hall. It offers a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, flowers, foodstuff, arts and crafts, entertainment and community groups.

The entire city is in the Robbinsdale School District, and New Hope is home to four schools, including Robbinsdale Spanish Immersion School, Sonnesyn and Meadow Lake elementaries, and Cooper High School.

New Hope--From Previous North Education Center, which will serve 13 school districts that comprise Intermediate School District 287, is under construction on the north end of the city. It will house special needs students from the member districts.

New Hope also is home to the Northwest YMCA, which serves the entire northwestern suburban area.

There are 11 churches in New Hope.

The city has an active Lions Group, New Hope/Crystal Business Association, Rotary, New Hope Women of Today, and is part of the Crystal-New Hope/East Plymouth League of Women Voters. The Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast has been an annual fall tradition for many years. The city shares a senior transportation program with four other cities.

New Hope is a member of the TwinWest Chamber of Commerce.

The city has more than 400 businesses, and a business council that meets monthly. Most retail businesses are in the City Center at 42nd and Winnetka avenues, Winnetka Commons near 36th and Winnetka and Midland Center at Medicine Lake Road and Winnetka Avenue.

New Hope’s two industrial areas are west of Boone Avenue from 49th Avenue to Bass Lake Road, and east of Winnetka along the Canadian Pacific Railroad line between 32nd and 51st avenues.

New Hope’s largest employer is Minnesota Masonic Homes/North Ridge Care Center, which employs 1,000 people and is the largest nursing home in the state of Minnesota. The city has several other senior citizen res-

Crystal offers vibrant way of life he city of Crystal was incorporated in 1887, with 587 residents. The city hall was built in 1891 at 54th and West Broadway, and served the city until 1951. It was the council meeting place until 1958. It was razed in 1962. The Northside Fire Station served as the city administrative offices from 1951-59, when the city offices moved to leased quarters and then to the present city hall in 1965.

In 2010, Crystal celebrated the 50th anniversary of being a charter city.

Today, Crystal covers 5.9 miles and has a population of 22,138 people. The city borders New Hope and Brooklyn Park on the north, Brooklyn Center and Robbinsdale on the east, Golden Valley on the south and New Hope on the west. Highway 100 and County Road 81 are the city’s two main arterials.

Crystal has 9,481 housing units, 6,102 families and 9,389 households.

Its downtown area at Bass Lake Road and West Broadway has multiple strip malls with a plethora of thriving restaurants and retail businesses, including a Target store that came to Crystal in 1962.

The city has a home rule charter form of government, employs 104 full-time people and has a $9.5 million tax levy. The seven-member city council meets on the first and third Tuesdays of the month, with work sessions scheduled as needed. All regular council meetings are cablecast on Channel 16 and live-streamed online.

Crystal has 23 parks, the Crystal Cove Aquatic Center outdoor swimming pool, a community center, a skateboard park, an off-leash dog park, an extensive Little League field complex, a performing arts center building in Becker Park, and a library. A small part of Twin Lakes is within the city’s boundaries.

Crystal Airport is on the northern edge of the city, near the city’s VFW Club. Most of the airport is in Crystal, though portions north of 62nd Avenue are in Brooklyn Park, and the northeast corner of the airport is in Brooklyn Center. The airport is owned by the Metropolitan Airports Commission.

The airport opened in 1946 as a privately owned public-use airport. In 1948, the Metropolitan Airports Commission purchased the airport. Additional land purchases were made in 1951 and 1954.

City of Robbinsdale

Robbinsdale has small town charm obbinsdale, the first suburb of Minneapolis, was named for Andrew B. Robbinsale, an entrepreneur who purchased 90 acres of land after he passed through the village by train in 1887 and became enchanted with the city’s scenic beauty and its proximity to Minneapolis.

The Village of Robbinsdale was organized on April 19, 1893.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, people traveled to Robbinsdale to go duck hunting on Crystal Lake.

The city celebrated its centennial in 1993.

Now, Robbinsdale is a 2.9-square mile first-ring suburb with a population of 13,855 people. It is bordered by Minneapolis, Crystal, Golden Valley and Brooklyn Center.

The city has 6,097 households, 3,524 families and 6,243 housing units.

Its downtown area extends along West Broadway and offers an array of eating places, as well as a new drug store, a well-established meat market, a bakery, florist and bank.

Its small town feel is reflected in a main street mural, fountain and clock tower.

The city has a home rule charter form of government, employs 70 full-time people and has a $5.62 million tax levy.

The five-member council meets on the first and third Tuesdays of the month, with work sessions scheduled as needed. Regular council meetings are cablecast on Channel 16 and live-streamed online.

The police and fire departments are housed in a building at 4101 Hubbard Ave. N. There are 22 sworn police officers. The fire department, which originated in 1909, has 30 volunteer on-call firefighters.

There are four lakes in the city: Crystal Lake, Twin Lakes, Ryan Lake and Grimes Pond.

The city’s earliest newspaper was called The Robbinsdale Tellit.

Fawcett Publishing Co., founded in 1919 in Robbinsdale, published Captain Billy’s Whiz Bang books, and gave the city’s festival its name. The annual threeday summer festival, Whiz Bang Days, is held in July.

The entire city is in the Robbinsdale School District; Lakeview Elementary and Robbinsdale Middle School are located within the city.

Robbinsdale has nine churches.

The city is proud of its long-established Robbinsdale City Band, the oldest continuously active marching band in the U.S. The Robbinsdale Chamber of Commerce meets the first Tuesday of the month from September through May. The city’s largest employer is North Memorial Medical Center, which employs more than 5,000 people.

In 1954, Victory Hospital became North Memorial Hospital when it was reorganized as a private, non-profit hospital. Three years later, North Memorial received accreditation by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals.

The community just outside the city Robbinsdale--From Previous Over the next 50 years, several expansion projects took North Memorial from a 30-bed facility to a 518-bed medical center.

It is now one of the state’s Level I trauma Centers and also operates an ambulance service and Air Care, an air medical transport service.

Robbinsdale has a post office, a motor vehicle licensing bureau, an active senior citizens group, and a senior transportation program it shares with four other cities.

Its organizations include Diggers Garden Club, Westphal American Legion, and a very active historical society and Robbin Gallery museum that operates out of an historical building on 42nd Ave. N. that is recognized on the National Register of Historic places. Other city groups include Heart of Robbinsdale Community Foundation, Robbinsdale Historical Society, Robbin Gallery, Robbinsdale Little League and Robbinsdale Crime Prevention.

The city sponsors a plethora of annual events, including Meet and Greet the second Monday in September, Pet and Wheel Parade, Oktoberfest, spring egg hunt the Saturday before Easter, police and fire open house in August and the community tree lighting and sing-a-long the first Tuesday in December.

Three Rivers Parks

Three Rivers Parks offers fun galore lifton E. French Regional Park in Plymouth or the North Mississippi Regional Park in Minneapolis are two local places to enjoy the outdoors for those who live in Crystal, Robbinsdale, New Hope or Golden Valley.

The parks are part of the Three Rivers Park District that has nearly 27,000 acres of park reserves, regional parks, trails and special-use facilities in seven counties across the metro.

The Three Rivers Park District is a special park district governed by a board of commissioners and a superintendent, structured much like a school board. The core of the Park District is suburban Hennepin County but it also serves parts of Ramsey, Scott and Carver and Dakota counties.

The name “Three Rivers” comes from the district’s geography, situated within the watersheds that flow into three significant rivers to the region: the Mississippi, the Minnesota and the Crow.

There are facilities for every season including picnicking, swimming, play areas, boating, fishing, downhill skiing, snowboarding, golfing, camping and sledding.

The district has developed an extensive trail system for hiking, biking, in-line skating, horseback riding, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

Trails include the nine-mile Luce Line Regional Trail

that goes from Plymouth and Golden Valley into Minneapolis through Theodore Wirth Park.

Plans are underway for a $2.2 million Bassett Creek Regional Trail, which will run through New Hope, Crystal and Golden Valley and connect to the Minneapolis Grand Rounds trail system at Theodore Wirth Park.

A short ride or hike from Wirth Park will give you a Minneapolis skyline view from the north and take you close to major connections with the Cedar Lake Trail, Grand Rounds, the Midtown Greenway and more.

Views include wooded bridges overlooking Bassett Creek marshlands with Medicine Lake on the horizon.

For the motivated trail users, or committed commuters, the Luce Line State Trail continues West of Vicksburg Lane on crushed limestone through Minnesota prairie for more than 60 miles close to Hutchinson.

Don’t forget you can bike, hike or walk your dog on the Medicine Lake Regional trail, which connects Elm Creek Park Reserve in Maple Grove with French Regional Park and the Luce Line Trail.

Three Rivers also offer program sites for nature, recreation, historic, and farm education. The Park District serves 7 million park guests per year. The district’s facilities are ADA accessible and it offers special adaptive programming.

by Christopher Tully enchants young and old alike in the children’s area of the Rockford Road Library, 6401 42nd Ave. N., Crystal. It is one of many reasons why the library is a popular community destination.

In addition to books, CDs, DVDs, and downloadables, the library offers 51 computers, a Spanish language collection, a large quiet study area and two individual study rooms available on a first-come, first-served basis, and a large meeting room and conference room available for reservation.

Library programs that help make Rockford Road a community hub include Baby and Family storytimes, the Friends of the Rockford Road Library Book Club (which meets the third Tuesday of the month), the Friends-hosted “Socrates Café” discussion group, a volunteer-led “Spanish Read-to-Me” storytime on Monday evenings and “Conversation Circles” on Saturday mornings.

Computer tutors are available to assist 5-9 p.m.

Golden Valley Library Located at 830 Winnetka Ave. N., near the Golden Valley Shopping Center and other retail centers, the Golden Valley Library is a busy community hub.

The library is fortunate to receive strong community support. Dozens of adult and student volunteers assist patrons with computers, help with children’s programming and perform many circulation tasks, from shelving picture books to checking the shelves for items requested.

The Friends of the Golden Library group has more than 200 members and holds two book sales each year.

Funds raised by the sales help fund children’s and adult programming, a summer reading program, author talks, library art and library supplies.

Forty-seven computers are in constant use by job hunters, students and others.

To serve the increasingly diverse Golden Valley community, world language collections in Spanish and Russian are available. The library staff includes immigrants from Ethiopia, Russia and India who are very helpful in reaching out to those from other cultures. An Ethiopian librarian on the staff at the Golden Valley Library, along with other African immigrants on the Hennepin County Library staff, present programs on the cultures of Golden Valley’s new immigrant neighbors for both staff and the public.

Area Schools

Robbinsdale Area Schools strive to excel obbinsdale District 281 Schools serve all or portions of Crystal, Golden Valley, New Hope, Robbinsdale, Brooklyn Park, Brooklyn Center and Plymouth, which includes 100,000 residents and 47,000 households. The district has about 11,000 K-12 students, down from its peak of 28,000 in the 1970s. They are housed in two high schools for grades 9-12, one alternative high school, two middle schools for grades 6-8 and nine elementary buildings for grades K-5. There are six additional learning and service centers.

The district, the eighth largest in Minnesota, has a $139.6 million general fund budget and employs 1,940 people, including its own bus drivers.

It has a seven-member school board, elected at large, which meets on the first and third Monday nights of each month, plus additional work sessions on off-Mondays.

Regular meetings are cablecast live on Channel 16 and live-streamed online.

The district offers a Spanish Immersion program at the elementary and middle school levels, International Baccalaureate at elementary, middle school and high school, and Advanced Placement offerings at both the middle and high school level.

Each elementary school offers an all-day kindergarten option and gifted and talented programs. Programs for special education are available at all grade levels.

The Robbinsdale School District has been recognized statewide and also nationally for art/music/drama/speech programs that begin in the elementary schools and continue through grade 12.

Arts education includes choir, band and orchestra that begin in the elementary grades. District music stu-

dents perform annually at Orchestra Hall in downtown Minneapolis.

District 281 was the first school district in the nation to receive the Medallion Award from the Children’s Theatre Foundation for outstanding K-12 theater. Each of the two high schools presents a musical each year, plus other plays. Drama also is emphasized in the middle schools, where several plays are scheduled each year.

The Robbinsdale Area School District was named one of the “Best 100 communities for Music Education” in 2007, during the eighth annual survey of American Music Conference.

A full complement of 24 athletic extra-curricular girls and boys sports is offered in the two high schools, in addition to 37 non-athletic extracurricular activities including DECA, chess club, yearbook, and Lego League.

The district also offers a community education program that serves residents from birth through senior years, including an early childhood family center, family resource center, senior service, adult academic programs and enrichment classes.

In 2008-09, the district’s Community Education program served 4,630 pre-school learners and 7,052 learners in the adult enrichment program.

District 281 has seen rapidly changing demographics.

Area Schools

Hopkins Schools sets mark for success nlike many Twin Cities-area districts whose boundaries end at the city line, Hopkins Public Schools encapsulates seven west metro communities.

It serves the entire city of Hopkins, the majority of Minnetonka, about half of Golden Valley and portions of Eden Prairie, Edina, Plymouth and St. Louis Park.

Hopkins School District’s K-12 population includes about 7,200 students. Its secondary facilities – Hopkins High School, Hopkins North Junior High and Hopkins West Junior High – are all located in Minnetonka.

The district’s primary-level facilities include Alice Smith and Eisenhower elementary schools in Hopkins, Gatewood, Glen Lake and L.H. Tanglen elementary schools in Minnetonka and Meadowbrook Elementary in Golden Valley.

The district is also home to the Harley Hopkins Family Center in Hopkins, which offers early childhood programs. XinXing Academy, Hopkins’ Chinese immersion program, opened at Eisenhower Elementary in 2007.

It currently offers grades 1-3 and will add a grade level each year through sixth grade.

The Hopkins School District has been honored with numerous national recognitions and its students and staff receive many awards as well.

In 2010, Hopkins High School once again was ranked among the top 5 percent of high schools in the nation, according to “Newsweek” magazine’s annual listing of top U.S. high schools.

It was the sixth consecutive year Hopkins High School earned a place on the list, which is based on the number of Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate exams given divided by the number of graduating seniors.

Hopkins is also one of only 15 districts in the country to receive the prestigious Torchlight Award from Promethean, a global leader in interactive technology.

Four of the district’s schools received national Bronze Awards from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation for their focus on healthy eating and physical activity.

The three secondary schools in the district are National Schools of Excellence –Hopkins High School was the first high school in Minnesota to receive this award. Hopkins’ two junior highs were the first middlelevel schools in the Twin Cities metro to achieve the recognition.

Hopkins High School is home to the Lindbergh Center, a community facility that features five basketball courts, an indoor running track, walking path and fitness and weight training facilities that are open to the public.

In 2004, the high school added a 900-seat performing arts center, which houses student and professional theater productions and concerts. It also added a state-ofthe-art dining room and food services facility that year.

Hospital

North Memorial serves medical needs ing, radiology, and educational services.

esidents of Golden Valley, New Hope, Crystal and Robbinsdale have taken pride and comfort in knowing that there is an independent, healthy and strong hospital for all their medical needs in the heart of these communities. North Memorial, with more than 700 health care providers in its system, continues to grow, meet and prepare for the health care needs of its patients.

In 1939, Dr. Samuel Samuelson built Victory Hospital on property he already owned in Robbinsdale. In a time when the only hospitals were located downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul (to be closer to physicians’ offices), building a facility in the suburbs was a bold step. Dr. Samuelson could envision the health care needs of a growing community, and the first suburban hospital in Minnesota was admitting patients.

In 1954, Victory became North Memorial Hospital when it was reorganized as a private, non-profit hospital. Three years later, North Memorial received accreditation by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals.

Over the next 50 years several expansion projects would take North Memorial from a 30-bed facility to a 518-bed medical center.

The first totally integrated hospital-based medical transportation system in the state of Minnesota began at North Memorial, and now includes eight helicopters, 120 ambulances, and 725 employees.

Municipal Liquor

RC Liquor supporting the community RC Liquors is also a contributor to community events throughout the year, the largest one being Whiz Bang Days.

During the weekend-long event, the store helps coordinate the wine sampling event at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

The city has opted to have RC Liquors hours be 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

Colleen Caturia, one of two managers at RC Liquor, says that people can find the monthly specials on the city website and Facebook.

A big endeavor for the store has been to inform their customers that they are on Facebook and often have new items arriving at the store.

“They can go on Facebook and see what’s new, ask questions and make requests,” Caturia said. “We want to be sure to have what the community wants us to carry.”

The big focus this year for RC Liquor has been to try and bring the store more up to date and Caturia said the store now houses an increased selection of micro-brews, craft beers and a larger selection of wines.

“We want to appeal to the younger, educated families that are moving into this community,” Caturia said.

“That’s been our real strive.”

Robbinsdale is one of 210 Minnesota cities that limits off-premises alcohol sales to municipal liquor stores.

Profits are used by general fund activities or special projects, which may include recreation programs, elderly transportation and public safety equipment.

The city of Robbinsdale operates one off-sale liquor store, RC Liquors, which offers a variety of regional, domestic and imported beer, wine and liquor.

The city has operated a municipal liquor store since the late 1940s when voters gave the authorization.

According to the Minnesota Municipal Beverage Association, municipal liquor stores started after the prohibition as a means for cities to control the distribution of alcohol in their communities.

Throughout the years, it has evolved as a way of generating income for the community.

A portion of the revenue generated by RC Liquors is designated to fund park improvement projects in Robbinsdale.

For the past few years, RC Liquors has transferred $75,000 per year to fund park improvements.

“We are hoping to increase the funding for parks as profits increase and are looking for an opportunity to move to a larger space to improve our product selection,” said City Manager Marcia Glick.

Municipal liquors help Robbinsdale to control the distribution of alcohol within the community while supplementing the cost of government services.

Courage Center isn’t just a rehabilitation program; it fits in time for fun as well with a wide range of sports and recreation programs.

The center has multiple camps throughout Minnesota, which offer resident camping in the summer. For kids and adults with disabilities, it offers adventure-type camps at Courage Center North, near Lake Itasca. The Golden Valley location is also one of the few rehabilitation programs in the country to be in collaboration with the Christopher and Dana Reeve Grant Program through the Reeve Foundation.

“We are excited about the new program,” Warner said. “It’s helping people with spinal cord injuries and getting people who have paralysis with spinal or neurological conditions up and exercising.”

With the new program, they are finding that with intensive fitness, patients are rebuilding some of the brain pathways and the results are increased functions and circulation.

Through new opportunities and as a way to better serve patients, Courage Center has been making its mark to help ensure that one day, all people will live, work, learn and play in a community based on abilities, not disabilities.

“It’s in our mission that we help people with disabilities to realize their full potential,” Warner said. “That’s what it really is.”

Originally founded in 1928, the Golden Valley center concentrated on getting children with polio out of their homes and into the community.

Since then, it has evolved, said Courage Center Senior Communications Specialist, Sue Warner.

“It’s meeting the unmet needs of people with disabilities in the community,” she said. “We are giving people more independence and quality of life.”

Golden Valley is the headquarters for the Courage Center, which is a Minnesota-based rehabilitation and resource center that advances the lives of both children and adults that may be experiencing barriers to health and independence.

The center specializes in rehabilitation services for people with brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, stroke, chronic pain, autism or disabilities experienced since birth.

Along with inpatient programs, the Courage Center offers physical, mental, occupational and vocational therapies as well as assistive technology and independent living services.

Warner often finds that patients have been so touched by Courage Center, that they will come back to use the state of the art fitness center, or swim in the pool.
